It was two o'clock in the afternoon, and from her uneasy anchorage in the pass the German man-of-war struck the time, four bells. Overhead the sun shone fiercely through a mist of fire; below, the bay gave back a dancing glare; on the outer reef the long breakers foamed and tumbled, white as far as the eye could reach. From his perch beneath the bows of the Northern Light a sailor, paint brush in hand, was slowly wearing out the day—a brown-bearded, straight-nosed, handsome man of thirty, his red shirt open to the waist, his bare arms stained with the drippings of his brush. Astride of his plank, which hung suspended in midair by a block and tackle at either end, the seaman faced the task that seemed to have no end. For a week he had been at it, patch by patch, working his way round the bark, while the bells had struck on the man-of-war and the sun had risen and set.

They are not for everyone because they can be a bit longwinded. They were back in the day before TV, tablets and the internet, so they tend to sprawl and ramble and take their time, but in my opinion they are great, especially if you like travel and the life at sea.

In the summer of 1979, the rural town of Ashmoore, Oklahoma has its bucolic world rattled from within by an act of unprecedented violence against seventeen-year-old Jenny Wade. In the aftermath of the attack, the town rallies together but with no immediate arrests, the small-town gossip mills quickly begin to grind the story into pulp, churning with speculation, distrust and doubt, ultimately aimed at Jenny herself. At the same time, Brian Thompson, the fourteen-year-old brother of Jenny’s best friend, enters into a relationship with Mr. Barnes, his former sixth-grade teacher; a relationship that quickly crosses all moral and legal lines and alienates Brian from his friends and family and brings down on him every childhood fear of being branded and tormented as an outcast. In the shadows of the gossip and rumor, an unlikely friendship develops between Jenny and Brian—a friendship marked for destruction by a town set on reclaiming its once safe but now fragile existence.

By Ivonne C Angueira Amazingly written novel from Jeffrey L Richards. The characters were so well developed that I felt as if were right there with them. The story dealt with some harsh truths about how we as humans can be so cruel and heartless to people we know and see in our everyday lives. I highly recommend this novel, you will not be able to set it down.

It was very well written and I found myself engrossed in each of the different characters, whether loving them or hating them. The story line moves along and makes you not want to put it down. Well done to the author, Jeffrey Richards!

The characters really come to life in this wonderfully expressed story. This novel has the capacity to bring you back to your adolescence, especially if you felt like an outcast. Each chapter is filled with vivid details of the torture and pain that is inflicted on those who are different and unique. I read the E book and loved it so much that I ordered a few copies and started a book club! It's an excellent read and I highly recommend it to all, you will not be able to put it down I guarantee it. I'm excited and looking forward to what is to come from this amazing and creative author

The water-clock marks the hour in the Ta-chung sz',—in the Tower of the Great Bell: now the mallet is lifted to smite the lips of the metal monster,—the vast lips inscribed with Buddhist texts from the sacred Fa-hwa-King, from the chapters of the holy Ling-yen-King! Hear the great bell responding!—how mighty her voice, though tongueless!—KO-NGAI! All the little dragons on the high-tilted eaves of the green roofs shiver to the tips of their gilded tails under that deep wave of sound; all the porcelain gargoyles tremble on their carven perches; all the hundred little bells of the pagodas quiver with desire to speak. KO-NGAI!—all the green-and-gold tiles of the temple are vibrating; the wooden goldfish above them are writhing against the sky; the uplifted finger of Fo shakes high over the heads of the worshippers through the blue fog of incense! KO-NGAI!—What a thunder tone was that!

Weird Beauty By Zack Davisson In his introduction to "Some Chinese Ghosts," written in 1886, Lafcadio Hearn states that he was searching for tales of "weird beauty," of the elegance hidden within Oriental tales of the supernatural which evoked a mood more than outright fright or horror. It is interesting to note that this was Hearn's first exploration of the topic that would be his lasting legacy. "Some Chinese Ghosts" was written when he was still living in New Orleans, a year before he would journey abroad to the West Indies and four years before he would land in Japan for the first time in 1890 and there spend the rest of his life.In what would become the template for his future works, including his most famous folklore collection Kwaidan: Stories And Studies Of Strange Things, in "Some Chinese Ghosts" Hearn gathered together those legends that represented the mood he was searching for, either from translated volumes or from the legends of those around him.Like much of Hearn's work, "Some Chinese Ghosts" is in the Public Domain, and thus available in many different editions as well as free on the internet. This volume by Dover Publications is the same size and style as their release of Kwaidan: Ghost Stories and Strange Tales of Old Japan and is the same size and style. Unlike the Dover "Kwaidan" release, however, "Some Chinese Ghosts" is not illustrated and contains only the text. The same text, with additional Hearn writings, can be found in the collections Oriental Ghost Stories and Lafcadio Hearn: American Writings. The book contains six stories in total, many of which would not be considered "ghost stories" in the Western sense. They illustrate Chinese sensibilities and religion, with different morals and consequences. In the back are Hearn's original notes for each tale, detailing where he found the original and speculating on the tale's meaning. There is also a Glossary for unfamiliar terms and history. The stories are:The Soul of the Great Bell - The Emperor commands an impossible task, demanding a bell be created that can be heard for a hundred ri. If the bell makers are unable to complete the bell, they shall all lose their lives, and only the daughter of the Master Bell Maker knows what sacrifices to the gods are necessary. The Story of Ming-Y - A cautionary tale typical of Oriental weird fiction where Ming-Y, an accomplished and admired young man, catches the eye of Sie, a beautiful and deadly supernatural creature. The Legend of Tchi-Niu - A slightly different take on the same theme, an earnest and hard-working man named Tong is rewarded for honoring his ancestors with a beautiful wife who is more than she seems. The Return of Yen-Tchin-King - A legend based on the Emperor's continual quest for the potion of immortality. The Tradition of the Tea-Plant - A fanciful legend of the celestial origins of that altogether wonderful plant, tea.The Tale of the Porcelain-God - In another legend typical of Oriental folktales, an artists labors too hard seeking perfection in his craft, and the cost of such perfection.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. He can tell a terrifying story, but here he is introducing us to a culture that he truly loves. By Robert Connelly Lafcadio Hearn wrote for people who weren't going anywhere. In the late nineteenth century only the wealthiest, or most desperate people traveled far from their place of birth. For everyone else, Lafcadio Hearn wrote beautifully descriptive prose describing people, flora and fauna of exotic places. In this collection, Hearn takes the dry translations of missionaries, and scholarly writing about China, and transforms the original documents into six exotic and very beautiful fairy tales. Hearn calls them ghost stories, but they have far more in common with Arthur Rackham than with M.R. James. The language in these stories is vivid, almost baroque, with wonderful images of shifting, delicate colors and exotic locations.People who love this short book, will probably love his book about his experiences in the Caribbean, as well as his wonderful stories from Japan.

Excerpt from Sadhu Sundar Singh: Called of GodThis little book was originally intended for the use of Christian women of the Malayalam country, but the writer has been persuaded to issue an English edition.Nearly the whole of the matter has been the subject of conversations with the Sadhu himself, with whom we have enjoyed much inspiring companionship and with whose permission the book is issued. This word picture of a true servant of the Great Master should be an inspiration to all Christian men and women in India, and it docs not seem too much to hope that Indians of all classes will see how truly Jesus Christ can manifest Himself in and through the people of this great land, and how worthy He is to be India's Lord and Saviour.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. For those who are familiar with Yeats' poetry, particulary his beloved early poems like "The Lake Isle of Innisfree," reading "Rosa Alchemica" is an experience of joy. Called by critics his best work of fiction, "Rosa Alchemica" incorporates not only the lush language and imagery of early Yeats, but also his personal interests: Irish culture, myth and legend, and his lifelong membership in the society of the Golden Dawn, a secret society that believed it could practice magic. Yeats believed that "poetry and romance cannot be made by the most conscientious study of famous moments and of the thoughts and feelings of others, but only by looking into that little, infinite, faltering, eternal flame that we call ourselves." And if this is so, then "Rosa Alchemica" is purely of Yeats' self, for he was a member of the Society of the Golden Dawn for over thirty years. Although he was unwilling to publically acknowledge all of the society's beliefs, which included three orders of magi, including the highest order that reflected Robartes himself, Yeats sincerely believed that the realm of the magical and spiritual was real.

I revere the poet, and it's past time to examine his work in detail.I don't know where this one fits in the Sitz im Leben Yeats. It is, as I say, a good old-fashioned Occultist reverie, filled with sonorous and evocative phrases that only a Yeats can deliver. Yet, I found it impossible to suspend disbelief. You'll get a more exciting tale from H.P. Lovecraft, an observation that doesn't speak well of an icon like Yeats. There is one worthwhile magical idea worth mentioning. Yeats almost convinces me that ideas on the mental plane can be more real than concrete persons and objects. He points out, quite rightly, that Hamlet influences the minds of men more strongly and enduringly than "you or I."To be read and laid aside.review by Jeremiah Cox, author, REDESIGNING GOD.

  • Silas Marner: The Weaver of Raveloe is the third novel by George Eliot, published in 1861. An outwardly simple tale of a linen weaver, it is notable for its strong realism and its sophisticated treatment of a variety of issues ranging from religion to industrialisation to community. The novel is set in the early years of the 19th century. Silas Marner, a weaver, is a member of a small Calvinist congregation in Lantern Yard, a slum street in an unnamed city in Northern England. He is falsely accused of stealing the congregation's funds while watching over the very ill deacon. Two clues are given against Silas: a pocket knife, and the discovery in his own house of the bag formerly containing the money. There is the strong suggestion that Silas' best friend, William Dane, has framed him, since Silas had lent his pocket knife to William shortly before the crime was committed. Silas is proclaimed guilty. The woman Silas was to marry breaks their engagement and later marries William. With his life shattered and his heart broken, Silas leaves Lantern Yard and the city.

Silas Marner: Illustrated Platinum Edition (Free Audiobook Included), by George Eliot

From Library Journal This 19th-century classic, read by Andrew Sachs, is a tale of betrayal, gold, and love, encased in the elegant symmetrical structure so popular in traditional English fiction, featuring Marner, the weaver, who is framed for theft by his best friend and becomes a recluse, focusing his strong affections only on the store of golden coins he receives in payment for his work. As usual, Chivers has produced an excellent audio presentation of a literary masterpiece. Alas, in this day and age fewer and fewer readers not enrolled in literature classes actually read the works of what are frequently referred to as "dead white males" even if, as in this case, they were actually written by a woman. For this reason, this title is recommended for all academic but only larger public libraries.-I. Pour-El, Iowa State Univ., Ames Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review "I think Silas Marner holds a higher place than any of the author's works. It is more nearly a masterpiece; it has more of that simple, rounded, consummate aspect. . .which marks a classical work."—Henry James

109 of 113 people found the following review helpful. A book for all times, but not for all readers By Susan E. Hallander Question: How can you ensure that a person will hate a book? Answer: Make her read it for 7th grade English class, make sure that the language is old-fashioned, and above all, make sure that the ideas and concepts are over her head. If that's what happened to you, and that's why you have an aversion to Silas Marner, and you are now over 30, pick it up again. Read it twice. Silas Marner is one of the greatest novels in the English language.Yes, it starts out sad, as our pathetic hero looses both his trust in humanity and his faith in God. But the power of love replaces his lust for money, and wins out in the end. Meanwhile, morally poor but financially rich, high-living Godfrey Cass provides a counterpoint to simple Silas. At the end there's a surprise when the fate of Godfrey's evil brother is revealed. When you're all done, before you file Silas Marner on the shelf, go back and read the paragraph about Silas' thoughts when he discovers that his hordes of coins are missing. If you have ever felt sudden extreme loss, you will recognize the stages of despair from disbelief to acceptance "like a man falling into dark water." Which is why this book is not suitable for children, and is most appreciated by those who have undergone their own moral redemption.Silas has been the inspiration for many other characters, including Dicken's Scrooge. He has been portrayed in movies, including "A Simple Twist of Fate" starring Steve Martin. But none is as good as the original. If you haven't read it since junior high, try it again. Silas Marner is an excellent book. There's a gem of human understanding in every chapter.

In this story, George Eliot (pen name for Mary Ann Evans) depicts a man named Silas Marner, a weaver by trade. He lives happily in his home town of Lantern Yard, until his best friend William Dane betrays him by setting him up as a thief. William then marries Silas' fiancée, and Silas is shunned from the town. He eventually settles in a very small cottage in Raveloe, where he spends his days making cloth and other materials for the townspeople. Due to his now secretive and reclusive ways, the people of Raveloe never really come to know Silas, and he lives in solitude, having turned away from his former faith and happiness. But one winter's night, a small orphan girl comes to his house, and everything changes. Silas cares for the child (with the help of his neighbor, Mrs. Winthrop, whose family soon befriends him), and his heart begins to soften. This is a very good representation of the redeeming power of love, and the consequences of a person's actions. For people who enjoy classic literature, this is definitely a must-read.Ryan RobledoAuthor of the Aelnathan:

You are better coming to it fresh, without knowing anything of the simple yet solid plot, so I will say nothing of it. I will just urge you to read this wonderful book. Eliot writes beautifully and from page one, you realize you are in the hands of a true artist. This is a very human, very English story of simple people living through those very basic emotions that make the world turn and give the universe meaning.

“What you do in this world is a matter of no consequence. The question is what can you make people believe you have done.” ― Arthur Conan Doyle, A Study in Scarlet “So all life is a great chain, the nature of which is known whenever we are shown a link of it.” ― Arthur Conan Doyle, A Study in Scarlet "A Study in Scarlet" is the first published story of one of the most famous literary detectives of all time, Sherlock Holmes. Here Dr. Watson, who has just returned from a war in Afghanistan, meets Sherlock Holmes for the first time when they become flat-mates at the famous 221 B Baker Street. Review [Holmes] is probably the only literary creation since the creations of Dickens which has really passed into the life and language of the people. G. K. Chesterton --From the Trade Paperback editionHere it is at last, the definitive edition, in nine volumes, of all the Sherlock Holmes stories. The notes are comprehensive and lengthy. The introductions and notes are full of fresh information, technical (such as the manuscripts that show Doyle consistently under-punctuated) and factual. Julian Symons --The Sunday Times

About the Author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was born in Edinburgh where he qualified as a doctor, but it was his writing which brought him fame, with the creation of Sherlock Holmes, the first scientific detective. He was also a convert to spiritualism and a social reformer who used his investigative skills to prove the innocence of individuals.

It contains the first volume of Sir Arthur Canon Doyle's short stories and his first full-length Holmes story A Study In Scarlet. It also includes new colored illustrations by Kelly Jones. The great stories will leave you on the edge of your seat and its hard to put down. Holmes's incridable deductive reasoning will blow your mind. A must read if you loved the movie.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Hardworking Moral Drama By Von Oliver Optic is not today's kind of author. His story's not only have morals, but they have morals repeated on practically every page and by practically every character. And the good characters are very good, and the bad characters... well, even the bad characters aren't that bad. They have more honor in their little finger than the average character in, say, `Twilight' or `Ella Enchanted'.Not all of the morals are ones that moderns might agree with, either. Obedience versus having fun?For those who can handle the antediluvian style, however, they might find in Oliver Optic something they can really enjoy: a call to duty, to valor, to friendship, to loyalty, to perseverance, hard work.`Now and Never' stresses the `hard work' part of the equation, while not ignoring the others. Our hero is a plucky thirteen year old boy, son of a widow (of course), a poor widow (of course), with a heartless banker threatening to foreclose on her house... well... you get the picture. But unlike the melodrama it sounds like, Now or Never is light, cheerful, and full of `moral drama'.

Joseph Thomas Sheridan Le Fanu was an Irish writer of Gothic tales and mystery novels. He was the leading ghost-story writer of the nineteenth century and was central to the development of the genre in the Victorian era. M. R. James described Le Fanu as ”absolutely in the first rank as a writer of ghost stories”. Three of his best-known works are Uncle Silas, Carmilla and The House by the Churchyard. In addition to M. R. James, several other writers have expressed strong admiration for Le Fanu’s fiction. E. F. Benson stated that Le Fanu’s stories ”Green Tea”, ”The Familiar”, and ”Mr. Justice Harbottle” ”are instinct with an awfulness which custom cannot stale, and this quality is due, as in The Turn of the Screw, to Le Fanu’s admirably artistic methods in setting and narration”. Benson added, ” best work is of the first rank, while as a ‘flesh-creeper’ he is unrivalled. No one else has so sure a touch in mixing the mysterious atmosphere in which horror darkly breeds”. Jack Sullivan has asserted that Le Fanu is ”one of the most important and innovative figures in the development of the ghost story” and that Le Fanu’s work has had ”an incredible influence on the genre; regarded by M. R. James, E. F. Bleiler, and others as the most skillful writer of supernatural fiction in English.”

Sheridan Le Fanu's lesser known novel, Checkmate, involves self-interest, dishonesty, deception, revenge, and murder. Sir Reginald Arden, worried by mortgages on Mortlake Hall, is arranging marriage of his daughter Alice, unbeknownst to her, to Lord Wynderbroke, a middle-aged, wealthy peer. Some time previously Sir Reginald had ostracized his fiery, proud, spendthrift son Richard, but nonetheless he temporarily recruits his son's efforts in disguising the family discord from Lord Wynderbroke. Richard sees advantages to himself if Alice marries Wynderbroke, and discredits Mr. Longcluse, a recently arrived wealthy gentleman that has been showing romantic interest in Alice. Meanwhile, we readers are puzzled by Mr. Longcluse's relationship with a French citizen, a Monsieur Lebas, who is unexpectedly murdered in a betting parlor. The plot is further complicated by a murder that occurred some twenty years previously. Harry, a brother of Sir Reginald, was robbed and murdered outside Mortlake Hall. And so goes the early chapters. The atmosphere is not as dark and threatening as in Le Fanu's highly popular Uncle Silas, but early on there is a vague concern that something is not quite right. A gentleman of apparently good credentials is ultimately revealed to be a formidable, highly wicked man; his meticulous steps to achieve revenge are reminiscent of a carefully played game of chess. The solution to this Victorian mystery is perhaps a little farfetched as it involves rather fanciful surgical techniques practiced by an unethical Prussian doctor. Nonetheless, Checkmate makes good reading and I give it four stars.Checkmate (1871) is a good example of the sensation novel, a genre popular in Great Britain in the 1860s and 1870s. The Victorian public was accustom to Gothic tales involving adultery, theft, kidnapping, insanity, bigamy, forgery, seduction and murder. However, the sensation novels authored by Wilkie Collins, Mary Elizabeth Braddon, Le Fanu, and others were considered particularly shocking because these crimes take place not in fictionalized Gothic locales, but in familiar Victorian domestic settings. As editor and owner of the Dublin University magazine, J. Sheridan Le Fanu's literary influence was substantial, but following his death in 1873 his works faded into obscurity. Fortunately for the modern reader, M. R. James, a scholar of medieval manuscripts and a writer of ghost stories himself, helped restored Le Fanu's reputation by editing and reprinting (in 1923) Le Fanu's Madam Crowl's Ghost and Other Stories. Today, Le Fanu's short stories and novels are all available in reprint editions. Some have become television screenplays. Sutton Publishing released a reprint edition of Checkmate in 2000.

By Happy Elf Mom I don't want to give the plot away, but I don't think you'll know for sure what's going on until the very end, at which point you'll kick yourself. And that is the point at which you will realise why this book was never made into a movie - you are reading this book as a modern reader THROUGH the eyes of someone at the time. So I was completely fooled but as myself, nope. I wouldn't be if I were part of the story. And neither would you.Just read it! I found myself very drawn to these characters, they are described so well.

Featuring a young woman (early 20's) who is wealthy but unhappy with her existence, wishing for "more" ... she becomes at the suggestion and recommendation of her seamstress a school teacher in rural New Hampshire. I liked how she interacted with the mischief maker of the school. And she chose a wonderful family (widow of a war veteran) to stay (board) with too. Themes that would play as well today and one hundred years ago are all prevalent.A man from her past shows up, and there's a wealthy stuck up so-and-so to boot, along with a woman and her two daughters. Fortune hunters and prey... interesting and the "act in haste/repent at leisure" bit will surely please folks.Anyway, I enjoyed this Horatio Alger story, featuring adults -- and a woman is the heroine. She's practical and smart and very generous too. I liked her and you will as well.Aside: I've been sticking with the free H.A. books but chose to buy this one because it features a woman. It was worth the price (less than $2 as I recall) and is now a part of the permanent Kindle bookshelf. I tend to delete, so Keeper Status is my highest regard. I enjoyed A Fancy of Hers and believe you will too. Ditto children.

My first Regency novel! Thank you, all! You have warmed my heart with your delightful responses to my Mister Darcy contemporary series. I am so glad you found the tales to be ‘feel good’ and uplifting. I hope you enjoy my first sojourn into the Regency era as I tag along after our favorite couple. In the GALLANT VICAR, Darcy and Elizabeth retain the same jousting banter contained in my MISTER DARCY SERIES, but they have now returned to their own time where insults are an art form and reputations the most valued of commodities. What would happen if Mr. Collins finally snapped and Elizabeth might be the cause of his breakdown? What if he were replaced at the Hunsford parish by a charming, unwed vicar who arrives on the heels of Elizabeth’s rejection of Darcy? Darcy is desperate to deconstruct the growing attachment Elizabeth feels for the new vicar. Determined to unearth the truth about the clergyman before Elizabeth is coerced into marriage, Darcy swings into action even as he fears he will appear to be jealous. Will Darcy save the day? Will Elizabeth accept his help? And exactly who is the Gallant Vicar? Hold on to your bonnets, as my stories move at a faster pace to match their snappy dialogue.

By ArkansasAustenFan Barbara never disappoints. I fell in love with her Mr. Darcy series and was drawn to her first venture into Regency writing in this book. Job well done. This is a fun Darcy and Elizabeth confrontation in Hunsford. The disastrous proposal is behind them and they are working through the mental collapse of Mr. Collins. This is a cute Mary, Charlotte, Elizabeth and Darcy read with a wild new vicar thrown in. Is he who he appears to be or does Mary have the right of it from the beginning. What about the maid, Sarah, and her little girl. Who do they belong to? Oh it does get complicated, but the mystery is a fun one to unravel. Elizabeth, what is it with you and smooth talking men? Think girl, think. Yes, Barbara has carried the verbal sparing of Darcy and Lizzy from the Mr. Darcy series over into this book as well. One must realize that the word "gallant" did not express the same meaning in Regency times that it does today.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. All You Need Is Love By Jim Hendricks A fun read. The plot is well paced with a few twists and turns, characters are well developed, the era is well captured, as is the wit and humor. Elizabeth and Darcy represent pride and prejudice very well and what they do to break down the barriers they create. Darcy tries to tell Elizabeth how he feels but keeps putting his foot in his mouth and Elizabeth's responses keeps it there. But he tries and tries again. This is a great take on a great book that will keep you laughing to the end.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Interesting and different storyline. By Ethel I enjoyed the different and creative storyline which was taken by the author, and the writing was good. Elizabeth was a bit too stubborn and prone to quick anger than is typical. My only real complaint is that at the end of the book, it just dropped off. I felt as though the author just ran out of words/thoughts to complete the story. This is not uncommon in this genre, but it does still irritates me.

After graduating from Oxford in 1878, Wilde moved to London, where he became notorious for his sharp wit and flamboyant style of dress. Though he was publishing plays and poems throughout the 1880s, it wasn t until the late 1880s and early 1890s that his work started to be received positively. In 1895, Oscar Wilde was tried for homosexuality and was convicted and sentenced to two years in prison. Tragically, this downfall came at the height of his career, as his plays, An Ideal Husband "and The Importance of Being Earnest, "were playing to full houses in London. He was greatly weakened by the privations of prison life, and moved to Paris after his sentence. Wilde died in a hotel room, either of syphilis or complications from ear surgery, in Paris, on November 30, 1900.

Don't leave home without it By MaratsBathing If you believe literature's main purpose in existence is to induce pleasure, you could probably never find a better writer than Oscar Wilde. All his plays are absolute delights from start to finish, even the ones that aren't The Importance of Being Earnest. The Picture of Dorian Gray is a fantastic novel and a deserved classic. His poetry's derivative, but not bad by any stretch of the imagination. His stories, essays, letters, collections of epigrams, and other various writings are excellent reading as well, if you don't mind occasional melodrama or other minor missteps. This is a relatively expensive collection, but one that is well worth it. I don't regret spending a penny. The print's a readable size and, to my somewhat expansive knowledge on Wilde, none of his writings have been omitted or forgotten.Essential for those who want to enjoy literature while allowing it to expand the mind, but also looking for something deeper than Tuesdays With Morrie or other modern, popular tripe.

Campbell Most paperbacks the size of this one, nearly 3" wide, are hard to hold onto but the quality of this paperback is very good and text size easily readable. So far I have found every Oscar Wilde entry I was looking. Highly recommend.

I was totally unfamiliar with the works of Oscar Wilde, until I bought this one on a friend's recommendation. It's huuuuuge, yet incredibly beautiful. Dorian Gray must be one of the greatest stories ever told, his poems are razor-sharp, his letters not less, and every line he comes up with is quotable. If you want to make sure you don't miss a thing, this is the book to get (and try his biography, especially the part about the trial).

  • The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes is a collection of Sherlock Holmes stories, originally published in 1894, by Arthur Conan Doyle. The first London edition of the Memoirs in 1894 did not include "The Adventure of the Cardboard Box", although all twelve stories had appeared in the Strand Magazine. The first U.S. edition did include the story, but it was very quickly replaced with a revised edition that omitted it. The reasoning behind the suppression is unclear. In Britain the story was apparently removed at Doyle's request as it included adultery and so was unsuitable for younger readers. This may have also been the cause for the rapid removal of the story from the U.S. edition, and some sources[specify] state that the publishers believed the story was too scandalous for the American public. As a result, this story was not republished in the U.S. until many years later, when it was added to His Last Bow. Even today, most American editions of the canon include it with His Last Bow, while most British editions keep the story in its original place in The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes. Additionally, when the story was removed from the Memoirs, its opening pages, where Holmes emulates Dupin, were transferred to the beginning of "The Adventure of the Resident Patient". In some later U.S. editions of the Memoirs, which still omit "The Adventure of the Cardboard Box", this transfer still appears.

Amazon.com Review Penzler Pick, February 2000: What is there about the greatest series of short stories in the history of the world that hasn't already been said? This is the second (of five) story collections by Doyle about the greatest detective in literature--and a splendid volume it is, containing such superb puzzles as "The Greek Interpreter," in which readers are introduced to Mycroft Holmes; "The Musgrave Ritual"; "Silver Blaze"; and the earth-shattering "The Final Adventure," recounting the struggle between Holmes and the evil Professor Moriarty in which the two titans were apparently killed as they went over the edge of the Reichenbach Falls.

But every mystery reader already knows this. I'm pointing out this marvelous book because it has been extensively annotated by a fine Sherlockian scholar, Les Klinger, who has brought to all serious students of the Holmesian canon a level of erudition seldom encountered. In addition to the expected illustrations from The Strand magazine and meticulous scrutiny of chronological evidence of various events, there are references to primary sources and a staggering helping of information from the thousands of works about Sherlock Holmes by others.

More than 30 years ago, another great Sherlockian scholar, William S. Baring-Gould, produced a ground-breaking volume that enjoyed more than 35 printings in its original two-volume format and probably sold just as many copies in a slightly less elaborate one-volume size. The Annotated Sherlock Holmes became the single most essential volume in the library of any true Sherlockian, of which the world has far more than you think.

Les Klinger has acknowledged Baring-Gould in every way imaginable, and it was an act of extraordinary courage to attempt to supercede that monumental work. But that is exactly what he appears to be doing. The first volume, his annotated edition of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, was introduced by the same publisher last year. There are seven yet to come.

If you want to master just about everything there is to know about The Great Detective and The Good Doctor, to understand what Holmes meant when he referred to "a comet vintage" of wine, and to know what discrepancies there are between the English and American editions of the works, plus a thousand other things relating to Holmes, Watson, and the England of the Victorian era, you must have this volume, as well as all the others in the series as they become available over the next few years. --Otto Penzler

From Library Journal This BBC radio production presents all 12 short stories in Conan Doyle's 1893 Memoirs collection, which includes such gold as "Silver Blaze," "The Musgrave Ritual," and "The Final Problem." This is radio drama in the grand tradition, and the programs feature fine acting, moody sound effects, and original violin music. The stories are generally convincing, with Clive Merrison and Michael Williams taking on the roles of the consulting detective and his doctor friend Boswell. Williams is quite fine as the dutiful and often perplexed Watson, but Merrison's Holmes at times comes across as confused and even pompous. Generally, however, he does the role justice. Pop in a tape, close your eyes, and be transported back to Victorian London. The lights on Baker Street are always on. Recommended.?Michael Rogers, "Library Journal"Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Eleven exciting Holmes stories By Louie Louie Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote a number of books, but to me, nothing really worked like his Sherlock Holmes mysteries. The characters are believable, and one begins to think that one almost knows them. The characters in Doyle's other books just don't have the same character.I've read all these stories before, but I had forgotten how they all turn out at the end. They are perfect for reading just before sleeping; you can finish one story easily each night before your eyes close and drift off to sleep.I love the way Holmes sees even the smallest details and is able to deduce truths from them. Of course these are classics that people will enjoy for centuries.

M Mills The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes was the second collection of tales about the eccentric sleuth. The book of storeis was published in 1894. The eleven stories are:Silver Blaze-The favorite horse in the Wessex Cup is missing and his trainer has been murdered. Holmes and Dr. Watson leave London to investigate. The Yellow Face-A mystified husband is concerned about a yellow face he saw at a home near his home. He also begins to question his wife's past. The Stockbroker's Clerk-An innocent young clerk becomes involved with a gang of thieves. The Gloria Scott-Murder and piracy on a ship come back to haunt characters in the present. The Musgrave Ritual-A buried treasure from the days of Charles II lead Holmes and Watson to an old estate and the discovery of grisly murder. The Reigate Squires-Holmes and Watson travel to rural England where wealthy homes have been violated by thieves. A surprising twist in the tale will surprise readers. The Crooked Man-The story of a love triangle resembling the story of David's seduction of Bathsheba and the murder of Uriahthe Hittite. One of the best stories in this collection. The Resident Patient-A terrified criminal fears reprisals from his old gang. The Greek Interpreter-The abduction of a fetching maid from Athens leads London's foremost interpreter into a murky world of criminal abduction. The Naval Treaty-The longest story in the collection deals with a young government offical who has an important document stolen from him. An intriguing case! The Final Problem-Sherlock Holmes and the evil Dr. Moriarity fight to the death at Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland. Doyle wrote the story hoping to kill off Holmes but he returned due to the public demand for more tales about Holmes. Sherlock Holmes is the most famous character in fiction. These classic tales by the hands of a master will keep you enthralled. Enjoy! The game's afoot!

The stories has a couple of typos, but nothing that ruins the story. The complete stories are all there, with no missing parts. The pages are easy to read, flip, and use. I really enjoy using Kindle to read my stories, it's easy to use, and has all the features that I want like view lock, and automatic page saving. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who loves reading Holmes!

Although many might not recognize the name P.G. Wodehouse, they have inevitably come across his work. Wodehouse was a British humorist who wrote novels, short stories, journalism pieces, and other stuff, becoming extremely popular over a 70 year career. Today he is best known for the Jeeves and Blandings Castle novels and short stories, but he was also a playwright and lyricist who was part author and writer of 15 plays and 250 lyrics. Both the name "Jeeves" and the character of Jeeves have become a common part of the English lexicon, meaning a valet or chauffeur. It is even the inspiration behind the popular search engine Ask Jeeves.

Mike: A Public School Story, by P.G. Wodehouse

About the Author Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (P. G. Wodehouse) was an English humorist and writer best known for his Jeeves and Blandings Castle novels. Educated at boarding schools, Wodehouse turned to writing at a young age, demonstrating great skill at humorous sketches and musical lyrics. He continued to write part-time while pursuing, at the behest of his father, a career in banking, and successfully contributed numerous pieces to Punch, Vanity Fair, and The Daily Express, among other publications. In addition to his literary work, Wodehouse was incorporated into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in recognition of his collaboration with Cole Porter on Anything Goes, his lyrics to the song Bill from Show Boat, and his work on the musicals Rosalie and The Three Musketeers.

While interned along with other British citizens in Germany during the Second World War, Wodehouse made a series of radio broadcasts for which he was accused of being a collaborator; and, although later cleared of the charges, he never returned to England. His work has influenced many other writers including Evelyn Waugh, Rudyard Kipling, J. K. Rowling, and John Le Carr?. P. G. Wodehouse died in 1975 at the age of 93.

17 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Not his best By LA in Dallas Like most highly prolific authors, Wodehouse's work is uneven, and this is definitely not his best. It's one of his earliest novels, and really should be attempted only by the avid Wodehouse fan who has practically memorized all his later works. Those will detect a faint flavor of what will eventually become the Wodehouse style. And in Mike, a pleasant but not overly brainy youth who gets into scrapes, and Psmith, a clever plotter who helps get him out, you will see hints of Bertie Wooster and Jeeves. One other thing I should mention: cricket is at the heart of this book. If, like me, you are unfamiliar with the game, you'll have to wade through pages that are more technical and less comprehensible than a treatise on quantum field theory. This free Kindle edition is bare bones: the table of contents is unlinked, and although there are captions for illustrations here and there, the illustrations themselves are absent. Also, most pages have an awkward line break or two in the middle of a paragraph. You get what you pay for -- these things didn't detract from my enjoyment of the story.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Hijinks at public school By Elizabeth A. Root The main reason to read this is that it leads into the Psmith series, which culminates in Leave it to Psmith, which is also part of the Blandings saga, and is fabulous. This was written early in Wodehouse's career, and is not as witty as his later work. This is a story of boys at public school, with lots of boyish pranks and cricket. I enjoyed reading it, but it would have been a lot better if I understood all the cricket references. Adolescent boys are not terrible interesting to me, so the reader should take that into consideration. This book has a complicated history. It was first published as two magazine serials which are combined in this book. In addition, the first serial was published as Mike at Wrykyn and the second as Mike and Psmith, or Lost Lambs.
