The Fairy-Faith in Celtic Countries, by W.Y. Evans Wentz

About the Author Walter Yeeling Evans-Wentz (1878–1965) was an anthropologist and writer who was a pioneer in the study of Tibetan Buddhism. He was born as Walter Yeeling Wentz in Trenton, New Jersey, and as a teenager read Madame Blavatsky's Isis Unveiled and The Secret Doctrine and became interested in the teachings of Theosophy. He received both his B.A. and M.A. from Stanford University, where he studied with William James and William Butler Yeats. He then studied Celtic mythology and folklore at Jesus College, Oxford; there he added his mother's Welsh surname Evans to his name, being known henceforth as Evans-Wentz. He travelled extensively, spending time in Mexico, Europe, and the Far East. He spent the years of the First World War in Egypt. He later travelled to Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) and India, reaching Darjeeling in 1919; there he encountered Tibetan religious texts firsthand. Evans-Wentz is best known for four texts translated from the Tibetan, especially The Tibetan Book of the Dead. Evans-Wentz credited himself only as the compiler and editor of these volumes. The actual translation of the texts was performed by Tibetan Buddhists, primarily Lama Kazi Dawa-Samdup, a teacher of English at the Maharaja's Boys' School in Gangtok, Sikkim who had also done translations for Alexandra David-Neel and Sir John Woodroffe. Evans-Wentz's interpretations and organization of this Tibetan material is frequently unreliable, being influenced by wholly extraneous preconceptions he brought to the subject from theosophy.

Oh I love this book By Francesca De Grandis The realm of Faerie and its inhabitants have always called to humans, with whispered promises of longings fulfilled, starlit magic, and freedom from oppressive societal structures. Some modern books address this hunger in an ethical, powerful way. However, current publishers also print a plethora of trite rubbish that takes unfair advantage of the ancient bond between human and Fey. This 1911 classic is a book that I would recommend be on the shelf of any starry-eyed seeker of Faerie lore or Fey-touched magic. You may not want to sit down to read it through, but prefer to read just a bit here and there over time. And you might want to read selectively. But even a few wee bits of this book will be worth the book's cost, because those bits are worth more than a whole slew of lesser books. I am so glad that this text came to me when I first decided to actually study this area; though it was many years ago, it is still a lovely memory.

I had exclusive access to an original at UGA's library and never thought I'd see it again after my father died and I lost my faculty privileges. W. Y. Evans Wentz is an amazing authority on many things spiritual. I first met his works in his authorized translation of the Tibetan Book of the Dead. This man was a true explorer and scholar in the finest of English tradition. Fans of the Mabinogion will find countless gemstones hidden herein. [As they will in Lady Gregory Scott's "Gods and Fighting Men"] Where Modred's tale leaves off Wentz's begins. Hint.. Hint...Nod Nod..Wink Wink ;-).

It will take me ages to read through it even one time, but it is filled with information that is well worth digesting. Covering so much time and space as it does, it pulls together all sorts of threads about the fairies. I'm excited about finding a large block of time to get serious.

Mortimer I was attracted to both the cover and description of this book quite a few months ago, so I was over the moon when the publisher offered to send me a paperback copy to review. Firstly, I’d like to apologise to the author and publisher for taking so long to review this book. I allowed my husband to help me tidy the house one day, resulting in the book going missing. I feared he had put it out with the recycling, but as if by magic it reappeared a few weeks ago. I’m so pleased it did, as this is a great book I’m so pleased not to have missed out on.On the face of it, Real Monsters is a book about war and terrorism. However, once you get into the story, it is clear that this isn’t just about the goodies fighting the baddies, it takes you beyond the physical acts of violence, covering the physical and emotional impact war has on soldiers, and what it is like for family left at home while their loved ones are fighting in another country. It makes you question, what are we fighting for? Who are the real monsters in all of this? Does war create more monsters rather than rid the world of them?Real Monsters is very emotive and thought provoking. Having given my heart and soul to this book, I was a bit of a wreck by the end, having the urge to cry hysterical tears. I managed to hold them back, but it wasn’t easy. I’m not even sure exactly why it left me feeling so emotional, be it my own personal involvement with the military or my frustration at the world, but it did, and in my eyes, that’s the sign of a well written novel.I loved the format of this book, the way the story is told in the form of letters, alternating between a man and a woman writing to their son. I think this was very cleverly done, and covered two very different angles of the same situation. The sections written by the soldier, were graphic and brutal, and some of the language, although most of which I can confirm is very much authentic, some readers may find offensive. I did question one particular word with my husband, which he says he’s not personally heard being used during his time in the military, but with the exception of that one word, all other, shall we say, nicknames were familiar to my husband and myself, making the soldier’s experiences feel even more real. These sections moved slower than those from Lorna’s viewpoint, but that made sense, after all, how fast does time pass when you’re on a military mission in the desert. As both a female and someone who is married to a man who has been in the Royal Navy for 15 years, I found it really easy to relate to Lorna. After many years, having a husband going away for long period of time does get easier. I remember the days when he was away for two weeks feeling like forever, but nowadays a fortnight goes by in a flash. One thing that never gets easier are the goodbyes though, especially when he’s going away for a few months. Those goodbyes are heart-breaking and I can feel my heart racing just thinking about it. I did have a giggle at Lorna going to the Military Spouses Meet-up club, as I was a member of the Navy Wives Club many years ago, and the wives there were also at least 2, more like 3 decades older than me.Although, Lorna’s story was the one I connected with the most, the soldier’s letters are a constant reminder that this is going on somewhere, right now. Turning a blind eye to it because you either don’t approve of war or just don’t wish to think about it, doesn’t make it any less real for those involved. People are dying every day because we as humans haven’t yet grasped how to get on with each other. You can choose to stick your head in the sand, or you can read books like this that make you think about a very real situation that is going on now. Then you could pass the book onto someone else, and have a conversation about it, and perhaps one day when enough of us talk about this kind of thing, we might come up with a solution to rid our world of hatred and violence without the use of further hatred and violence. What a wonderful world that would be.

By Carolyn Hertz I received a free kindle copy of Real Monsters by Liam Brown, published by Legend Press from NetGalley in exchange for a fair review.I gave this book about the atrocities of war five stars, even though I found it deeply disturbing at many levels. It's written from the dual viewpoints of Danny, the soldier husband & Lorna, the stay at home wife. There were many convoluted strands woven throughout the story. The end was completely unexpected. Here are three quotes I found significant. "'He ain't gonna last long in the field--he's got the sense of an f....n cockroach!' Schwartz winked at me. 'Which coincidentally is the only thing that will survive a nuclear holocaust...'""...this was a world where an unpaid credit card bill could follow you over continents & decades, where every square centimeter of the Earth had been mapped by satellites & drones. How could anyone, or anything stay hidden for so long?""I found myself struck by the idea that I was unraveling--as if a little piece of me had become snagged somewhere, at the oasis or back at the camp, or even further away maybe, an invisible thread stretchin out over the ocean, all the way back to you. Either way, I couldn't escape the feelin I was slowly being pulled apart, that with each step forward there was somehow a little less of me left to go on, that sooner or later I would simply disappear."The nebulous location of this war & the 'any man' voice of the characters is very well done. I highly recommend this book if you are up to reading about the horrors of war & its effects on men & women.Link to purchase: http://www.amazon.com/Real-Monsters-Liam-Brown-ebook/dp/B00MGNJP1Y

88 of 94 people found the following review helpful. This is not the book you hated in high school . . . By Alesha N. Gates There are so many things I could say about this book, but should I reach the heights of elegance achieved only by Shakespeare, Hawthorne himself, or Faulkner, I could not overcome the horrible, terrible misconceptions most people have formed after having this beautiful novel foisted upon them in high school. Instead, I'll share a few observations and some tips for reading.First, this is a complicated story. It's not about evil Puritans and hero Hester, although you will read this point of view in the cheat note summaries on the internet. It's not about feminism, really, nor is it about religion in any technical sense. The only comparison that really fits is that of love story, or love triangle, or maybe love square. (I told you it is complicated.) In all of literature, there are very few writers who have penned characters so incredibly real and well-rounded. When you finish the novel, you KNOW these people. Certainly there is some minor societal commentary, but the real story here is about these people. Now, I'm assuming that many people looking at this page have been told they must read this book for high school English. As a former teacher of said subject, I have some pointers.(1) Make sure you read the book for yourself. Chances are (in our current educational system) your teacher is going to have a flat interpretation of this book, likely gleaned from some ready-made teaching packet. (If you have another kind of teacher, consider yourself lucky.) You can have some very interesting class discussions if you actually read the material and challenge some of the majority opinions about the novel. Be a rebel. Have some fun in English.(2) Read *The Custom House* introduction, but wait until after you've finished the book. It's only good in that it explains Hawthorne's view of his own book (difficult and painful) and reveals his struggle to write it. The writing style, however, is decidedly un-Hawthorne and more difficult to read than the rest of the book. If you read it first, you will be unfairly biased against the novel.(3)Read it SLOWLY, if at all possible. The storyline is complex and should be read with care. I would also recommend underlining and taking notes, if your copy of the book allows it. You will develop a truly deep appreciation of the work.(4) Finally, avoid the Demi Moore 1995 adaptation AT ALL COSTS. Words cannot describe how awful it is. And if your hope is to find something to help you on the test, the only real similarities are the character's names and the red patch on Hester's dress. If you must see a film version, find the PBS miniseries with John Heard and Meg Foster (made in the 1970s). It does the best job that a film possibly could with this material.

It was one of the first books I downloaded when I got my kindle 2. The character portrayals are superb. It analyses the thoughts, motivations, strengths and weaknesses of the four major characters in the story - Hester Prynn, the vengeful doctor, the hapless minister and Hester's vivacious and elf-like daughter Pearl. The description of the little girl and how she copes with being ostracized with her mother by a rigid puritanical society, is especially moving. While there are some descriptions of nature that are quite vivid, most of the text goes into developing these four characters and is a fascinating psychological study, though at times it's little slow.Overall, a well-crafted story and a good read. The book though is hard to navigate on the kindle because it has no active table of contents. I therefore would not purchase this version at regular price. Luckily, it's free!

However, unlike many reviewers here, I have a much different view of the story. As some people have said before, Hawthorne's book takes a good deal of concentration, effort, and strength to understand. Not only to understand, but to finish. The story can drag sometimes, it is true, and Hawthorne's style of writing occasionally leaves something to be desired (I don't think I've ever seen that many commas, 15 letter words, or page long paragraphs before), but we simply must look past these minor issues. Overall, the plot is highly creative and intense, despite the writing.\Ok, ok, I agree that the first chapter, "The Custom-House", was pretty bad. In fact, it was so bad and boring that I drifted off to sleep several times while reading it! The first chapter has little relevancy with the story, so, unless you have to, I would suggest skipping that part of the text. The rest is exceptionally good, and the quality of the plot cannot be overlooked. My advice is to just lay off the first chapter; that way you'll be able to enjoy the rest of the book without difficulty. The story itself deals with sin and adultery, a subject that isn't very popular right now. Hawthorne does an excellent job of telling us about this, but he leaves the reader with many questions floating around in his mind at the conclusion. At the end of the story you're not 100% sure if Hawthorne was condemning the Puritan society, or if he was commending it. He leaves that for the reader to figure out, which is a thing authors seldom do. That's a major reason I believe this work is so unique and timeless. The story involves a women named Hester Prynne, living in the New World in the late 17th century. She has committed adultery with someone unknown, and, since the Puritan society considered the Bible to be their ultimate source of law, the punishment was quite severe for such an act. Hester is forced to wear a scarlet "A" (for adultery) on her attire at all times, as a sign to everyone that she has sinned deeply. And so she must carry out the rest of her life this way. That's the major gist of the plot, although there's much more. I won't give it anyway, though, you'll have to read the book to find out.Let's face it: at some time or another we all are going to probably have to read this book, voluntarily or involuntarily. Shouldn't we try to make the best of it? Read it for its enjoyment, anything else would be missing the point.

8 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Good mystery, bad story structure By Paul Roberge The first part of this novel present a fast-paced, suspenseful story of murder and detection, with effective surprises. I would give that section of the novel 5 stars. Unfortunately, the murderer is unmasked two-thirds of the way through. The rest is anticlimactic, the retelling at length of the story of the murder before its discovery, a story that we already know for the most part. The retelling is (for my taste) too detailed, beginning with plot-irrelevant information on the origins of one of the characters. The retelling does go on to explain some of the details of the crime, but these are usually slight: such as why was one sofa pillow was found wrinkled and the other marked by a drop of blood.Unless you're interested in the back-story, I would recommend skipping Chapters 15 (Celia's Story) through 20 and going straight to Hainaud Explains (Chapter 21, location 2750).Generally, the writing is good, the characters are credible, and the plot holds interest. Hainaud the detective has an ambivalent personality that flips between kindliness and biting sarcasm, often at the expense of a happenstance sidekick named Mr. Ricardo who repeatedly states the obvious as if he were making brilliant deductions.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Great detective story By K The detective in this story has a little bit of an attitude but he is good. Not much of a surprise ending though.

Inspector Hanard was a famous detective who was on vacation when he was called to solve the murder of Madame Dauvray. A psychic girl, Celia, did fortune-telling and Madame gave her gifts is their prime suspect and then she disappears. The characters are interesting and the mystery good.

The misfortune of us all is that we know so little, even nothing, about one another—neither about the soul, nor the life, the sufferings, the habits, the inclinations, the aspirations of one another. Literature, which I have the honor to serve, is dear to me just because the noblest task it sets before itself is that of wiping out boundaries and distances.

Price This is a reissue of the original 1909 American translation -- rather stiff, but still serviceable -- of the most popular, and very possibly the best, of the stories of Leonid Andreyev, after Gorky the most popular young Russian writer in the two decades before the Revolution. It tells of seven people condemned to death, five for a botched political assassination and two common murderers, and of how they face their ordeal, with reactions varying from martyr-like self-sacrifice to abject terror. Each of the seven is well differentiated, and none is a stereotype; they are treated with remarkable insight and imagination, and with a compassion that is never mawkish. The account of the last meeting between one of the condemned and his parents is a masterpiece of restrained writing, one of the most moving things you will ever read. One of the messages of the story is the ability of the human spirit to rise above affliction, treated without any rhetoric or blowing of trumpets. In a letter to his American readers that forms a short preface to the translation, Andreyev wrote, 'My task was to point out the horror and the iniquity of capital punishment under any circumstances.' He wrote with confidence of the sympathy of his readers. It is ironic that the USA is one of the last civilized countries where this penalty has still not been abolished. Andreyev's story has lost none of its relevance.

Watts The title was intriguing to me, and so at 1138 Kindle locations long I read it over two evenings. There are some typographical errors but nothing you cannot tolerate. The English translation was copyrighted in 1909, so it probably takes place during the earlier 1905 Russian Revolution. 5 terrorists-3 young men and 2 young girls-are arrested while carrying explosives and guns, before they were able to harm anyone. They are tried in secret and condemned to death by hanging. There are 2 others who are condemned to the same fate: one who is an admitted murderer and thief, and the other who likes to get drunk and act recklessly, who one day knifes his master several times and as an afterthought attempts to rape the cook. Even though he knows he did this he insists to the very end that he does not want to be hanged. The author describes what each of these people do, say and think during their trials, in their cells and during the trip to the gallows. There were no appeals and they were helpless to prevent the sentence from being carried out. Each man is described much more vividly than the two girls. The actual hangings are not described, but there is a graphic description of what the bodies look like afterwards. Let us just say that death was not instantaneous.

One of the truly great twentieth century Russian writers By A Customer 'The Seven that Were Hanged' and 'The Red Laugh,' also included in this book, are two of Andreyev's best stories and are both brilliant psychological explorations of the nature of death and war, respectively. Andreyev is largely ignored by the English reading public and few of Andreyev's plays or stories are translated and even fewer are in print. While achieving a small measure of fame in Russia early in his writing career for his short stories, esp. 'Lazarus', Andreyev's later writings, among which these two stories figure, were largely ignored. This is a reprint of a 1918 edition of Andreyev's works with the original and informative introduction by Thomas Seltzer which strangely neglects to analyze 'The Red Laugh.' These two stories are essential and will only leave you hungering for more of Andreyev's amazing writings.

Even without his supremely logical brain child, Sherlock Holmes, Conan Doyle shows that his tales are unbeatable for thrills and excitement.

Tales Of Terror And Mystery: Illustrated Platinum Edition (Free Audiobook Included), by Arthur Conan Doyle

About the Author Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930) is the celebrated author of many adventure novels, including The Lost World and The Poison Belt, and the creator of the hugely popular detective stories of Sherlock Holmes.

From AudioFile Tim Behrens presents four short stories in the style of an old-fashioned radio dramatist. He reads Conan Doyle's wordy descriptive passages in a businesslike manner, setting the stage for each adventure. On that stage the characters emerge and speak almost, it seems, independently from the reader. Behrens' careful attention to accent and his faithfulness to the author's description of each of his characters delineates the jealous German lover as clearly as the terrified British aeronaut. These stories, centered around thwarted love and jealousy, evil character, and daring deeds are gentle in comparison to the same themes from contemporary writers. Stories include: "The Horror of the Heights," "The Leather Funnel," "The New Catacomb," "The Case of Lady Sannox." L.S. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

It was written in 1923, four years before the last of the Sherlock Holmes books.Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is obviously at his best at mystery rather than terror. Fortunately, the mystery stories tend to be the longer of the two.The tales of mystery really do remind one of Sherlock Holmes. In one, one character states that if you have exhausted all the possibilities except one, that last remaining must be the truth no matter how farfetched it appears. In all the tales, he sets up mysteries that are solved in the Holmes style. Though not Holmes, some of the characters are quite interesting, and it is fun to try to figure out the answers to the mysteries.Good short stories. I recommend this book, at least the mysteries section.

I remember reading this book from cover to cover; every story is unique and fascinating. My favorite is "The New Catacomb". I happen to love Arthur Conan Doyle's short stories more than Sherlock Holmes and this is the best collection I have found.

You said so, I said so, she said so, whadda you say By jewel morris The movie is very close for comfort, as I reminded myself of the Diane Keaton character in Because I said so. Its a movie about asserting your independence and going with what your instinct tells you even when a well meaning parent says Because I said so. The characters are delightful in a whirlwind of whimsy and the film overall was so easy to watch.

The first story is interesting enough, but the second one struck me as greatly lacking that special 'something' that makes Algernon Blackwood's writings so great. All was redeemed, however, in the glorious tale spun in the third story of the book. Gripping, fantastical, and unexpected - this is what makes Blackwood so great. About the Author Algernon Henry Blackwood, CBE (14 March 1869 – 10 December 1951) was an English short story writer and novelist, one of the most prolific writers of ghost stories in the history of the genre. He was also a journalist and a broadcasting narrator. S. T. 10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Dr. John Silence By Zen Druid I'm a huge fan of the occult detective genre, or as Blackwood would have it, the psychic doctor. Blackwood's Dr. Silence is somewhat unique in this genra as he really doesn't DO very much, the tale more or less seems to unfold around him. Nonetheless, most of these are Blackwood in his finest form. The second story, Ancient Sorceries, has been published in numerous other collections and is a fine example of Blackwood's interest in pagan sorcery. The last story, The Nemesis of Fire, brings in Blackwood's knowledge of the Golden Dawn and Egyptian mythology and is a pretty rolicking good yarn. The first tale, A Psychical Invasion, is a more mundane house-haunting made much more interesting by the inclusion of a cat and dog into the mix. All in all quite good, a must for Blackwood fans and a great intro for the curious. The Kindle version is free, as is the Gugenheim version.Anyone reading this should also track down and read Blackwood's great book, The Human Chord.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Silence is Golden By LovecraftLass Sorry, couldn't resist the pun ;). I love the psychic detective genre and these fall just behind Carnacki but way ahead of Flaxman Low. Blackwood is a phenomenal writer anyway and while these stories may not be the best in his repertoire they are certainly no disgrace. Very entertaining. I would give them five stars but for the fact that we are told again and again (and again and then one more time) how good, selfless and amazing Dr. Silence is. It gets annoying to say the least. Let us see how pure and benevolent he is by his actions in the stories rather than being beaten over the head with it. Still, that's my only gripe and a small one at that. And hey, they're free so what do you have to lose by checking them out?

The very Doctor Who meets Professor Layton meets Sherlock Holmes character of John Silence is one of my new favorites, and I can't wait to crack open the next three John Silence stories. Also - it's free. Miss Mackenzie, by Anthony Trollope

About the Author Anthony Trollope (1815–1882) was one of the most successful, prolific and respected English novelists of the Victorian era. Some of his best-loved works, collectively known as the Chronicles of Barsetshire, revolve around the imaginary county of Barsetshire. He also wrote penetrating novels on political, social, and gender issues, and on other topical conflicts of his day. Trollope has always been a popular novelist. Noted fans have included Sir Alec Guinness (who never travelled without a Trollope novel), former British Prime Ministers Harold Macmillan and Sir John Major, economist John Kenneth Galbraith, American novelists Sue Grafton and Dominick Dunne and soap opera writer Harding Lemay. Trollope's literary reputation dipped somewhat during the last years of his life, but he regained the esteem of critics by the mid-twentieth century. "Of all novelists in any country, Trollope best understands the role of money. Compared with him even Balzac is a romantic." ”Cousin Henry” is a novel first published in 1879. The story deals with the trouble arising from the indecision of a squire, Indefer Jones, in choosing an heir to his estate.

40 of 40 people found the following review helpful. Trollope's gentle satire wins through here. By A Customer Anthony Trollope spends so much time doing the things that well-meaning creative writing profesors now tell one never to do--his editorial voice peppers each novel, he avoids subtle foreshadowing in favor of telling you essentially what will happen next, and he consistently drives plot towards a theme. Yet Trollope, a consummate Victorian, seems intrinsically modern whereas many more "literarily correct" modern humorists grow antique in a week or less. The secret, of course, is character, an eye and an ear for class distinctions, and a skewering wit combined with tremendous fellow-feeling for the foibles of his characters. Miss MacKenzie contains much of Trollope at his best--the title character is a beautifully observed genteel poor spinster-to-be suddenly visited with the misfortune of fortune. The author assiduously exposes flaw after flaw in Miss MacKenzie and her social milieu, and yet we like her better for the harsh light. In this world of tremendous unkindness, it is nice to remember that one can be honest without being brutal. Trollope, a writer of genial works of whimsy, brings the quiet honesty of literary fiction home safely here.

26 of 26 people found the following review helpful. an overlooked small gem By Margaret Johnston This is an overlooked small gem of a novel. Margaret Mackenzie is a spinster in her mid-thirties who receives a large inheritance when her brother dies and must then deal with what comes with the inheritance, including several suitors, who may or may not simply be after her money. Trollope depicts Miss Mackenzie with his usual unsparing honesty, and although in his autobiography he called her "a very unattractive old maid", her modesty, charity, and dignity endear her to the reader and make the rather everyday plot engrossing.

21 of 21 people found the following review helpful. Good for today, so-so for Trollope! By LINDA LEVEN This book, when compared to what is written today, is excellent. Trollope is a master with words - as all readers of his works will agree. He has a tremendous command of the written word - unlike authors of today!! However, for Trollope compared to Trollope, the book is just so-so. Many of his other novels are far superior. The book concerns the trials and tribulations of Miss MacKenzie after she inherits a fortune and then looses it. We see how her friends, neighbors, and male paramours react to her as her status in life changes. It's, as all Trollope books, enjoyable, but not one of his better books.

I admit that I even did not know Nero had I not read this book. This book opens my eyes into Roman history. Although I would like to know that history I have no way to begin because I do not know from where to begin. In this view, this book provides a starting point to learn the Roman history. Anyone, who is interested in the Roman history, would begin from this point if he as me knows little about Romans. By the way, I have read several books authored by Abbott, and I really like his books.

By Amazon Customer The story was certainly heart wrenching and touching but the grammar, tenses and spelling were quite deplorable. On a few occasions I was discouraged and thought I may stop reading but I truly wanted to find out more about the protagonist. I liked the story and plot but the writing was quite poor. It needs a lot of editing but has some potential.

There are very few photos inside and they have nothing to do with the text. Even if the same amount of photos was related to the topic discussed it would be much more presentable. It doesn't give many ideas but general basic once are sound and easy to understand. Nothing special that you can not find on the internet but it is nicely packed together and you can go and search on any particular idea you want to implement. There are references to different websites and blogs where we can find pictures or tutorials about suggested ideas. I like that. Actually I think this makes it a 4 star book.

I had heard the radio show and seen the movie - so I was just planning to read a classic in the original words but wasn't expecting anything new or interesting in the content. I was very surprised. Setting this back in Victorian Times when it was originally written totally changes the story. The speed at which the disaster is communicated is different. The speed at which the participants can flee from the Martians is different. The tools that the humans can bring to bear against the Martian invaders is different. All of these things make the story surprisingly new. I really enjoyed it.

Wells is chiefly recalled by the general public as the author of three seminal science-fiction novels: THE TIME MACHINE, THE INVISIBLE MAN, and most famously THE WAR OF THE WORLDS. But these are only three of the more than one hundred books Wells published in his lifetime, and it is worth recalling that Wells himself was a socio-political and very didactic writer, a determined reformer with distinctly socialist leanings. And his point of view informs everything he wrote--including these three famous novels. In each case, Wells uses the trappings of science-fiction and popular literature to lure readers into what is essentially a moral lesson. THE TIME MACHINE is essentially a statement on the evils of the English class system. THE INVISIBLE MAN addresses the predicaments of the men and women to whom society turns a blind eye. And THE WAR OF THE WORLDS is a truly savage commentary on British imperialism and colonialism. This is not to say that it isn't science-fiction--for it most certainly is, and moreover it is science-fiction well grounded in the scientific thinking of its day: intelligent life on Mars was believed to be entirely possible, and Wells forecasts the machinery and weapons that would soon become all too real in World War I. Set in England about the beginning of the 20th Century, the story finds a strange meteor landing near the narrator's home--and from it emerge Martians, who promptly construct gigantic and powerful killing machines and set about wiping the human population of England off the face of the earth. The Martians and their machines are exceptionally well imagined, the story moves at a fast clip, and the writing is strong, concise, and powerful. And to say the book has had tremendous influence is an understatement: we have been deluged with tales of alien invaders (although not necessarily from Mars) ever since. But there is a great deal more going on here than just an entertaining story. Both the England and Europe of 1898 were imperialistic powers, beating less technologically advanced cultures into submission, colonizing them, and then draining them of their resources. With THE WAR OF THE WORLDS, Wells turns the tables, and imperialistic England finds itself facing the same sort of social, economic, and cultural extermination it has repeatedly visited on others. The upshot of the whole thing is that Wells ultimately paints the English habit of forced colonization as akin to an invasion by horrific blood-sucking monsters from outer space--and even goes so far as to suggest that if the present trend continues we ourselves may follow an evolutionary path that will bring us to the same level as the Martians: ugly, sluggish creatures that rely on machines and simply drain off what they need from others without any great concern for the consequences. If we find the idea of such creatures horrific, he warns, we'd best look to our own habits. For these monsters are more like us than we may first suppose. And this, really, is why the novel has survived even in the face of advancing scientific knowledge that renders the idea of an invasion from Mars more than a little foolish. THE WAR OF THE WORLDS is a mirror, and even more than a century later the Martians reflect our own nature to a truly uncomfortable degree. A memorable novel, and strongly recommended--at least to those who have the sense to understand the parable it offers.--GFT (Amazon.com Reviewer)--

A race of aliens with very human characteristics By Greg Hughes Many people who have heard of "The War of the Worlds" may have seen the movie without reading the book. The movie was set in Cold War America, with martians that flew in what looked like greenish manta rays. The book was set in Victorian England, and the martians looked like towering tripods. In both versions however the premise is the same: Earth invaded by a superior alien intelligence. HG Wells wrote about humanity's ego and complacency being crushed by a highly developed lifeform."The War of the Worlds" has been interpreted as an allegory of imperialism. Just as the British took over other countries to make them part of the Empire, so too is the Earth being taken over by the Martians. They even bring their own plant life with them, the "Red Weed". The Martians see us as vermin, trying to wipe us out with heat rays and poisonous black gas. Thats's what makes the story so much fun. It is frightening in a cosy sort of way. We read the story in a safe, comfortable room, while the narrator talks of all the death and destruction he sees.An interesting point that Issac Asimov once brought up was that if alien intelligence did exist, their advanced evolution would also mean they would be emotionally superior to us. They would not act like barbarians, as war is a primitive thing. When people write alien invasion stories, they are really saying something about us. We are destructive and aggressive by nature. Our history has been one long story of conquest, slavery and even genocide. So HG Wells has put a little bit of us into his Martians. Both metaphorically (as imperialists), and literally (as food).

These two mushroom books actually exceeded my expectations. I used the Field Guide to accurately a specimen as edible which I had previously held doubts about. It does not list all of my finds, however, I have discovered that the Field Guide, together with Nina Marshall's 1903 edition of The Mushroom Book identifies over 90% of them. I am very pleased with Amazon.com's access to privately held collections and the manner in which they market them.

I should have sampled first and I would have known this wasn't the type of book I was looking for. However, the first 10% of the book was table of co tents and such. Then when I finally reach the actual content I found the writing dry and difficult to follow. As stated, if I had sampled I could have avoided the disappointment. I needed something written conversationally rather than so technically and with color illustrations to help me identify fungi.
