Lilith, by George MacDonald

Amazon.com Review "Lilith is equal if not superior to the best of Poe," the great 20th-century poet W.H. Auden said of this novel, but the comparison only begins to touch on the richness, density, and wonder of this late 19th-century adult fantasy novel. First published in 1895 (inhabiting a universe with the early Yeats, George Bernard Shaw, and Oscar Wilde--not to mention Thomas Hardy), this is the story of the aptly named Mr. Vane, his magical house, and the journeys into another world into which it leads him.

Meeting up with one mystery after another, including Adam and Eve themselves, he slowly but surely explores the mystery of the human fall from grace, and of our redemption. Instructed into the ways of seeing the deeper realities of this world--seeing, in a sense, by the light of the spirit--the reader and Mr. Vane both sense that MacDonald writes from his own deep experience of radiance, from a bliss so profound that death's darkness itself is utterly eclipsed in its light. --Doug Thorpe

About the Author Michael Phillips has written four dozen books, most of them novels, with sales totaling over five million copies. He also has edited George MacDonald novels for today's reader, including, The Curate of Glaston. He and his wife make their home in Eureka, California.

Lewis, appears to owe a great deal to George MacDonald, whose Victorian fantasy as demonstrated in "Lilith" has a primitive and dark undercurrent. Nightmarish yet optimistic, "Lilith" is possibly the most vivid life-after-death parable since Dante's Divine Comedy. The protagonist and first-person narrator is an excitable man named Mr. Vane who lives in an old house that has been in his family for generations. One day he notices an odd creature making its way through the library; this turns out to be the birdlike Mr. Raven, who introduces him to a mysterious world beyond a magic mirror stored in the garret of the house. A more modern author might be tempted to give this world a name to distinguish it from the real one, but to MacDonald it is merely an extension of Mr. Vane's conscience.Mr. Vane is understandably frightened of but fascinated by this world. Part of it appears to be a realm of the Dead where skeletal apparitions dance and fight as though they were still living; part a forest where stupid, brutal giants and innocent, benevolent "little ones" share their habitats; part a murky moor where leopardesses roam in search of babies to eat and enchanting women are to be found. At the center of this world, embodying its evil, commanded by an entity known as the "Shadow," is the demon princess Lilith, a direct allusion to the Assyrian goddess and to the legend of Adam's first wife.As a guide to this netherworld, Mr. Raven acts as a kind of Virgil to Mr. Vane's Dante; the structure of the story has a vague analogy to the sequence of Inferno, Purgatory, and Paradise. Mr. Vane's role is less clear; he could be considered a crusader against evil or an emissary of the living in the land of the dead. However, I wouldn't want to restrict my interpretation to a religious allegory because the novel works as pure mythology, although supplementary to Judeo-Christian theology. For all his antiquated, overly formal prose, MacDonald displays a very poetic sensibility for symbolism; for example, he personifies the sun as "he" and the moon as "she," as if they were a married pair of celestial luminaries. There is also an implied notion of a library as a gateway to the imaginations of the innumerable deceased, which is a comforting thought that connotes potential immortality through the written word. If nothing else, "Lilith" functions as a bridge between two enduring traditions -- imaginative classic literature and twentieth century fantasy.

80 of 82 people found the following review helpful. a tale rich in paradox By A Customer Rich in symbolism, steeped in paradox, this is a tale of a man's journey and his coming to terms with the frailty of humanity when it is seen in the light of God. MacDonald never hides the basis of his paradigm--that there is a God who loves us, who knows better than we do what is best for us--rather, he weaves it into a rich tapestry of adventure wherein key characters make known the paradox that is at the heart of Chrisitianity: he who would be first must be last. This is not an easy read. And, truly, anyone who is not willing to accept that an author may expound his faith through the words and deeds of his characters--indeed, through the fatherly nature of the narative itself--will little likely enjoy reading this tale. But to those who are ready to dive in to the heart of a realm of paradox in an attempt to better know the God that MacDonald worshiped, this may very well be a life-changing story. I am not a man given to favorites. But no other work has colored my life so beautifully as MacDonald's LILITH. And no other story is more dear to my heart.

Haunting story, influence on Lewis and Tolkein is obvious By Julie Brennan I would give 5 stars, but for the fact that MacDonald's writing can get a bit hard to follow - others have said this better than I. But the story has stuck with me long after I finished the book. I have read C.S. Lewis' Pilgrim's Regress many times, and I can see the influence of MacDonald on his writings. The Madeline L'Engle quote on the back cover says it beautifully: "Surely, George MacDonald is the grandfather of us all - all of us who struggle to come to terms with truth through fantasy."I want to address comments by the reviewer who felt the worldview was "clearly Universalistic" and not appropriate for Christians. I almost didn't finish the book based on his comments, but I am glad now that I did and could form my own impressions. His statement is pure projection from my observation. Up until the end, free will determines whether a person is "good" - and that is the free will to be willing to die - completely - before one can became "changed" by God. I even re-read the ending to see if I could find out why this reviewer posted this, and I cannot. He also felt Lilith's repentance was forced. Was Paul's conversion on the Road to Damascus voluntary, or forced? Was Jonah's repentance forced? The repentance of Lilith was not forced any more than these examples. But (I am putting my impressions of what the allegory means) God was fed up with the damage she was causing, and intervened to stop her evil. She had a choice to either repent, or to be destroyed. It was the end of the line, so to speak. She very nearly chose destruction. Finally, he states that MacDonald believes Satan will eventually repent. I believe he refers to Chapter XL in the scene where Lilith is afraid to lie down and sleep the sleep of death - which is really living (dying to self - and it takes time to perfect us to life) - she fears the return of the Shadow. From [...]"When the Shadow comes here, it will be to lie down and sleep also.--His hour will come, and he knows it will.""How long shall I sleep?""You and he will be the last to wake in the morning of the universe."And a bit later, as the sun rises and the Shadow is forced to depart: "It is the great Shadow stirring to depart. Wretched creature, he has himself within him, and cannot rest!""But is there not in him something deeper yet?" I asked."Without a substance," he answered, "a shadow cannot be -yea, or without a light behind the substance!"I feel the reviewer has placed a negative theological interpretation that may or may not be what was in MacDonald's mind. There is no mention of how the Shadow will come to his hour, or what will happen when his hour comes. One would have to infer that.At the end, Mr. Vane does wake up from his dream, and realizes it was a vision. This WAS a vision, not direct theological text.I completely agree with him that the most important theme to a Christian is that true life is reached through death to self. About two thirds of the way through the book, I almost quit. Mr. Vane's repeated pig-headed refusal to "die" to his self, his headstrong following of his own will in spite of disastrous results, reminded me of how hard it is to die to our selves, even as we know we MUST, that we cannot enter into life without that self death. The point where I stopped was a point where Vane was metaphorically saying, "Okay, I know now that I am Yours, and I will need to face this death to self, but let me exercise MY will and do what my nature wants to do just this one more time before I give in." My discomfort with this may very well be the fact that Christians face this choice all their lives. The theme of whether we are predestined to salvation / repentance or exercise free will is a huge theological issue that is about as understandable as how God can be three but one or how he could be timeless, omniscient, omnipresent, etc. I believe it is one of those issues we must take on faith, that our human understanding cannot fully comprehend this aspect of God, so it is fruitless to argue. MacDonald's allegory, I feel, beautifully represented both of these spiritual principles in comfortable proximity to each other. People who feel strongly polarized to one or the other may be uncomfortable with and criticize this proximity.I agree one should not read this *for* theology (get that straight from your Bible), but I disagree that it is "unbiblical."I hope that helps anyone else interested in MacDonald's writings and their influence on generations of writers after him.

At a time when the Romantic movement was sweeping the European continent in the early 19th century, among musicians, writers and playwrights, perhaps nobody embodied and personified the Romantic movement quite like Lord Byron, the famous English poet whose life and works are both the stuff of legend. In addition to being celebrated for poems like She Walks in Beauty, When We Two Parted, and So, we'll go no more a roving, Byron was also notorious for living in excess, racking up debts and liaisons at increasingly reckless speeds. Despite his fame and abilities, he eventually exiled himself, ultimately traveling to fight in the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Turks. Lord Byron would fall ill and die during the war at the young age of 36, but the Greeks consider him a national hero, and people have been reading his material and talking about his life ever since.

All poems to women - all different, at least one dead. One poem written at age 14. Byron was not that much of a prodigy. Porter's "Old Fashioned Garden" written (wasn't it?) about the same age is much more precocious. Byron's effort (typical in every other way of what came later) is very trite. At least one typo, many many words in italics that seem pointless - not for rhythmic emphasis, not for meaning (also emphasis), except one (name of a forgotten author identified in a footnote), see no reason for the italics. Book cost a fortune. If you're looking for a collection of short pieces by Byron, I recommend (as have others) the Dover Thrift Editions "Selected Poems". Also on Amazon, mine(from a seller, completely new and okay) was $3 + the exorbitant cost of shipping.

Peter Pan needs help, and he's convinced the effervescent Wendy Darling is just the girl to champion his cause. Ever since the mischievous fairy Tinker Bell began recruiting—more like, snatching—boys from London's orphanages to take them to a magical place called Neverland, things have gotten out of hand. Captain Hook has only become more violent and the boys more lost as their memories of life before Neverland begin to fade. Peter's only hope is to get the boys back to England and help bring balance to Neverland before Hook's dangerous escapades kill them all. Wendy is not quite certain why such a handsome young man would need her—especially a lad who clearly has a touch of madness in him. What boy learns to fly? But whatever the reason, home life has become too much for her now that her parents are hoping she marries an acquaintance she can barely abide. There is something about Peter Pan that intrigues her greatly, and then there is this magical world he talks about, this Neverland . . .

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. disappointing By Sarah Zull This story did not lend itself to her style very well. While her other stories enhanced or added creative touched to the originals I felt like she diminished the charm of Peter Pan, the boy who never grew up and could fly.

I always wanted a version where there is more romance between Peter and Wendy. So much adventure and excitement I couldn't put this book down. Wendy and Peter are just perfect in this book. Can't wait for the next one. Thanks jenni

A MAN (or a woman) is the most interesting thing in the world; and next is a book, which enables one to get at the heart of the mystery; and although not many men can say why they are or what they are, any man who publishes a book can, if he is on good terms with his publisher, secure the use of a little space to tell how the book came to be what it is. Some years ago a very learned friend of mine published a book, and in the introduction warned the “gentle reader” to skip the first chapter, and, as I have always maintained, by inference suggested that the rest was easy reading, which was not the case. In point of fact, the book was not intended for the “gentle reader” at all: it was a book written by a scholar for the scholar. Now, I have worked on a different plan. My book is written for the “tired business man” (there are a goodly number of us), who flatters himself that he is fond of reading; and as it is my first book, I may be permitted to tell how it came to be published.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. If You Love Books By taking a rest ?The Amenities Of Book-Collecting And Kindred Affections?, by A. Edward Newton is a classic in its genre as well as a book that will be enjoyed by anyone who is interested in the collecting of books, and some of the most noted collectors. Some may question the wisdom of reading about this man?s experiences, as they were collected in this book in 1918. A variety of books have been published in recent years that claim to offer a guide to the collecting of books or the experiences of novice collectors. Building a library of books is not something that is easily done or learned. And a person with a fortune at their disposal acting without guidance will only amass a collection that had it been guided by a trusted advisor would be exponentially more valuable and complete. The curator of the rare book department of a noted college who also was a participant in the latest book by Nicholas Basbanes, ?Patience And Fortitude?, introduced me to this book and two others. Mr. Basbanes is the author of, ?A Gentle Madness?, and will be publishing a third volume to his work that is already considered a modern classic by collectors and book lovers. While the prices and auction results that are listed in this book are very out of date, they still make for great reading, and in some cases may bring to memory a book on a grandparents shelf that today would buy a car or home. If nothing else these old prices show just how much value continues to be placed on collectable books. Mr. Newton lived during the same time that some of those authors whose work he collected were alive and writing. He was a collector of manuscripts, which meant that the author?s original drafts of their work were often available. At one point in the book he laments the appearance of the typewriter and the effect it will have on replacing the hand written original. Had he foreseen the computer it probably would have caused him physical distress.Another area he was an avid collector of is so-called association copies. Like manuscripts these have the rarity that comes with being a one of a kind item. Throughout the book he shares many of the treasures he acquired like a book inscribed from Charles Dickens the father to his son. For people who love late 19th Century Authors, this man not only collected their work, but often knew the writers and their friends. In other instances his collection of Boswell and Johnson?s work may not have come directly from the author to him, but he still was able to collect correspondence and other written material that is now difficult to find outside of museums. This particular book is also wonderful for it has photographic illustrations as well as black and white and color plates as well. If you love books, find as old a copy of this work as you can, and you will have added a treasure to your shelves.

Wisdom from the Master By Pete Lister A delightful read from one of the pre-eminent collectors of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the "Mark Twain" of books-on-books. An entertaining book, easily the equal of any of the books on collecting that have proliferated in this century. Newton's recollections of trips abroad to collect, and his stories of acquisition in this country, make warm and comfortable reading for any collector, especially his stories of conversations and exchanges with the major collectors of his day that other such books only report about. This one heads my want list.

By Kindle Customer IF you are a book lover -- and I mean a lover of physical books and their smells and covers, etc., as well as their content -- then you will love this book. I think a non-bibliophile will find it interesting also. It is the story of a man and his journey through his love of books. It is a wonderful book. Buy it!

Mr. Woodchuck is about the time Twinkle's father sets a trap for a woodchuck that lives near his property. Twinkle goes to see the woodchuck get caught, and has a dream in which she meets the woodchuck and his family. The woodchucks put her on trial for being a human, because humans set cruel traps for the purposes of killing woodchucks. Twinkle is sentenced to be put in a trap herself, and when she wakes up from the dream, she convinces her father never to set traps for animals ever again. Bandit Jim Crow is about a baby crow with a broken wing that Twinkle adopts for a pet. The crow has an evil nature, and as soon as his wing is healed, he kills the family's chickens and escapes to a section of the forest inhabited by birds. There, Jim Crow starts stealing and eating other birds' eggs, until the birds get Policeman Bluejay to keep Jim Crow in check. Jim then disguises himself with chalk, and continues stealing eggs. All the birds attack the disguised Jim Crow, and blind him. Jim Crow is forced to spend the rest of his life helpless, living off of the kindness of the other birds. Prairie-Dog Town is about how Twinkle and her friend Chubbins go to have a picnic near a prairie dog village. The prairie dogs talk to the children, and the children are magically shrunk down to prairie-dog size so they can enter the village. Inside, they meet a well-to-do family and the mayor of the prairie dog village. The two children are returned to their normal size, and wonder if the whole adventure was simply a dream. (Compare a similar story, "The Discontented Gopher," in Baum's Animal Fairy Tales.) Prince Mud-Turtle is about Twinkle finding an unusually-colored turtle and bringing it home with her. She later finds that the turtle is a fairy prince named Melga who was put under a curse by the evil Corrugated Giant, a creature with no bones. With the help of the turtle, Twinkle is able to travel to the giant's castle and restore the prince to his normal form. The prince then defeats the giant, and Twinkle is sent back home. Twinkle's Enchantment is about Twinkle entering a gulch in order to get some berries. She meets many curious proverb-based creatures, such a Rolling Stone That Gathers No Moss, a Little Learning (which she avoids because it is a dangerous thing), a Weasel that Goes "Pop!", and the Birds of One Feather. She then spends time with a dancing bear, and is invited to a grasshopper's ball. She wakes up. Sugar-Loaf Mountain is about how Twinkle and her friend Chubbins discover a trap door in Sugar-Loaf Mountain. They find a key and enter inside the mountain, where they find a city peopled by beings made entirely out of sugar of one form or another. They are captured by soldiers and taken to the king, who shows them the sights and introduces them to several high-grade citizens. While leaving, Twinkle and Chubbins accidentally drop the key inside, so no one can ever enter Sugar-Loaf Mountain again. The Twinkle Tales is a 1905 series by L. Frank Baum, published under the pen name Laura Bancroft. The six stories were issued in separate booklets by Baum's publisher Reilly & Britton, with illustrations by Maginel Wright Enright. In 1911, the six eight-chapter stories were collected as Twinkle and Chubbins; Their Astonishing Adventures in Nature-Fairyland — which is a misnomer, since Chubbins appears in only two stories and few are set in "Nature-Fairyland". The book was followed by Policeman Bluejay, which was retitled Babes in Birdland for its second edition. Baum later wanted these Bancroft stories published under his own name, and his publisher put out a second edition of Babes in Birdland (third edition overall) with Baum's name on it for the first time in 1917.

Frank Baum, using the name Laura Bancroft, wrote these six stories in 1905 as separate booklets which were later published together in 1911 as this book. The color illustrations are by Frank Lloyd Wright's younger sister Maginel Wright Enright. In this collection of short stories Twinkle is a girl living on the North Dakota prairie whose magical adventures concerning the animals she meets there are brought on by her tendency towards narcolepsy and vivid dreaming. Baum uses the animals' behaviors to create amusing fables for his young readers.Mr. Woodchuck - Twinkle's father decides to put a steel trap outside the entrance to a woodchuck's home because it is eating his clover. That afternoon Twinkle goes out to see if the woodchuck is caught. Laying in the warm sun near the trap, she dozes off and dreams that Mr. Woodchuck all dressed in evening clothes catches her. He and his family explain how cruel humans are, always trying to kill them, and decide to punish her.Bandit Jim Crow - Twinkle's dad gives her a wild crow with a broken wing that she calls Jim and nurtures back to health. When he is healthy, Jim kills a bunch of baby chicks and flies off seeking a new home. He finds a forest with many birds and settles into a vacant nest. Rather than being a good neighbor, he starts eating the eggs and chicks from unguarded nests. Led by policeman Blue Jay, the other birds punish Jim, but their kind and gentle natures won't let him die.Prairie-Dog Town - Twinkle and her friend Chubbins visit a prairie-dog town, get shrunk by a magic prairie-dog, and are entertained at a luncheon at the town mayor's home.Prince Mud-Turtle - Twinkle finds a turtle that can speak only on Saturdays because he is a fairy prince who has been transformed by an evil Corrugated Giant.Twinkle's Enchantment - Twinkle goes picking blueberries and crosses a line of enchantment into a land of talking idiomatic creatures like the Rolling Stone, Birds of a Feather, a Dancing Bear and more.Sugar-Loaf Mountain - Twinkle and Chubbins go hiking on Sugar-Loaf Mountain and find a secret passage to a vast underground kingdom inhabited by people made entirely of sugar.

Coming of age in bourgeois nineteenth century France By Vincent Poirier Unusually for a nineteenth century French novel, we are taken full circle with the book ending where it starts, but with the main character having grown.Monsieur Pierrotin drives a ramshackle stagecoach between Paris and Presle, a nondescript village about twenty miles away from the French capital. Presle is too small for the main post chair service so Pierrotin has a monopoly on a road no one else wants. His cart holds four people comfortably, but he usually squeezes nine passengers and sometimes ten. The passengers include Georges Marais, a handsome charmer who entertains himself by getting the innocent in trouble, and Oscar Husson, an innocent but frustrated youth. Next to them sits a count travelling incognito to check how his steward is managing his estate, and it is the steward who has invited Oscar to spend a few weeks on his master's estate.Despite his mother's warning to avoid gossiping with his fellow passengers, Marais goads Oscar into revealing things about his host, who happens to be the steward the count is going to meet. For once in a nineteenth century novel the coincidence is not outlandish. People unknown to each other but travelling to an obscure destination will likely have some connection to each other without realizing it.The count arrives on his estate, confirms his steward was putting his personal interests ahead of his master's, but would have forgiven him had it not been for Oscar's gossip including revelations about the count's beloved wife. This is Oscar's start in life: the loss of a protector through is own fault. His mother calls upon her former brother-in-law and Oscar's paternal uncle to take the boy under his protection. His uncle finds Oscar a clerkship in a law office. Oscar does very well for two years but on the day he is promoted to Second Clerc, he meets George Marais again, and again gets in trouble, and again finds himself without a situation and without a protector. After a few more adventures, a wiser Oscar ends up where we first met him, in Monsieur Pierrotin's stagecoach. He's on his way to Presle, having repaid his debt of honour to the count, with interest.A standard but interesting coming-of-age novel from Balzac's Comédie Humaine cycle.Vincent Poirier, Montreal

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Nona Vincent By Patricia D. The short story is about a writer who is talented but has much self doubt and high anxiety. He is frequently visiting with a married woman who has an older fat and rather vulgar rich husband. He writes his play having many teas and talk with her and creates Nona Vincent who is like her. She sees this and he does not. As a patron of the arts she has connections and arranges to have his play put on. He is endlessly critical of the leading lady whom never seems right to him. Both women are in love with him. He does not know it and is in love with Nona. It has a very moving wrap up to the story. I will not give it away but this is a little gem classic. I feel so for the women as one had to copy one who was really someone he thought he created. I do not know what to think of him. Repressed homosexual? Complete narcissist? I guess each reader will think differently of him, however, I did not like him at all. I really strongly dislike him. But the story is thought provoking and intense. This is a GREAT read. ps-one might even think he thinks HE is Nona. Note the, "I'll pray for you." Wild.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good Read For Older Adults By H. A. Hanks Entertaining for older adults, but too ancient for others. Set prior to Americas entry into WW 2, when telegraphs and pay telephones were still used. Short stories by one agent recalling the deeds of he and his agents- male and female. Insights into the spying of Russia, Italy, and Germany by agents they planted in the U. S. Not James Bond exactly, but some agents apparently were dashing dudes in fedoras and topcoats, as well as dedicated. One can read a story, and then read another later if interrupted without worrying about cliffhanger closes to chapters.Good reading for doctors office while waiting on appointment, or waiting on wife to put on makeup.

A wide variety of creatures walk, fly, leap, slither, and swim through fairy-tale history. Some marvelous animal characters are deeply inscribed in current popular culture-the beast redeemed by beauty, the wolf in pursuit of little girls and little pigs, the frog prince released from enchantment by a young princess. But like the adventures of many fairy-tale heroes, a curious reader's exploration in the genre can yield surprises, challenges, and unexpected rewards. Feathers, Paws, Fins, and Claws: Fairy-Tale Beasts presents lesser-known tales featuring animals both wild and gentle who appear in imaginative landscapes and enjoy a host of surprising talents. With striking original illustrations by artist Lina Kusaite and helpful introductions by fairy-tale scholars Jennifer Schacker and Christine A. Jones, the offbeat, haunting stories in this collection are rich and surprisingly relevant, demanding creative reading by audiences aged young adult and up.

Schacker and Jones choose stories that represent several centuries and cultural perspectives on how animals think and move. In these ten stories, rats are just as seductive as Little Red Riding Hood's wolf; snakes find human mates; and dancing sheep and well-mannered bears blur the line between human and beast. Stories range in form from literary ballads to tales long enough to be considered short stories, and all are presented as closely as possible to their original print versions, reflecting the use of historical spelling and punctuation. Beasts move between typical animal behavior (a bird seeking to spread its wings and fly or a clever cat artfully catching its prey) and acts that seem much more human than beastly (three fastidious bears keeping a tidy home together or a snake inviting itself to the dinner table). Kusaite's full-color artwork rounds out this collection, drawing imaginatively on a wide range of visual traditions-from Inuit design to the work of the British Arts and Crafts movement.

Together with the short introductions to the tales themselves, the illustrations invite readers to rediscover the fascinating world of animal fairy tales. All readers interested in storytelling, fairy-tale history, and translation will treasure this beautiful collection.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Feathers, Paws, Fins, and Claws: Fairy-Tale Beasts By Heidi Anne Heiner Feathers, Paws, Fins, and Claws: Fairy-Tale Beasts (Series in Fairy-Tale Studies) is part of the Series in Fairy-Tale Studies from Wayne State University Press. It's a new and different kind of release in the series which has had a strong academic focus until this book. This book has an academic foundation, never fear, but it is more suitable for a larger audience with a wider age range. In other words, this one fits comfortably on an academic shelf or an older kid's bookshelf. I say older, perhaps 8-10 and up since the tales are longer (most aren't suitable length for a bedtime story, for example) and the content is more mature--not adult or unsuitable for kids, per se, just older themes. With that said, I should quote the introduction that says:This volume of vintage tales was conceived especially for readers beyond childhood, those at an age when fairy tales may not appear to have much to offer and who therefore stand to be charmed by characters and plots they did not expect to find interesting. But young readers will be drawn to the book, too, since it is beautifully presented. There are 10 tales following the title's theme as well as an endnoted Introduction to suit the needs of someone with a more focused interest on the material. There is no index. It is also illustrated by Lina Kusaite and designed to be more visually pleasing than the standard academic tone. In truth, the book looks more suited to the children's folklore section and could easily end up there in bookstores. It will make a nice gift book for young and older folklore fans with an unusual line-up of tales. While The Three Bears is going to be the most familiar tale, it is still different since Goldilocks is no where to be found, just her antecedent "little Old Woman," known in some versions as Silverlocks, actually. So overall, this is a beautiful book and it will make a nice gift or a fine addition to your own library of folktales. The ten tales included are:Ballad of the Bird-BrideThe Story of the Three BearsThe Rat's WeddingBabioleNanina's SheepConstantino FortunatoEast o' the Sun, West o' the MoonThe Snake-SkinPrince CheriThe Maiden and the FishI was familiar with most of these--a few have appeared in SurLaLune collections actually--"The Maiden and the Fish" is in Cinderella Tales From Around the World and "East o' the Sun, West o' the Moon" and "The Snake-Skin" are in Beauty and the Beast Tales From Around the World. Which also gives you a clue as to what tale types those fit into. "Constantino Fortunato" is an early Puss in Boots.

Along with Homer, Hesiod was one of the Ancient Greeks’ first epic bards, and one of their best. Hesiod is believed to have lived between 750 and 650 B.C., and along with Homer it was Hesiod’s work that was the oldest to survive in Ancient Greece. It is still unclear which one of the two great poets came before the other, a source of debate among scholars even during antiquity. Hesiod's writings are one of the oldest and most important sources on topics like Greek mythology, farming, economic thought, astronomy, and timekeeping. Among the works credited to Hesiod is The Shield of Heracles, an archaic Greek epic poem consisting of 480 hexameter verses. The poem is about one of the journeys of Heracles, better known in English as Hercules. Theogony is an epic poem that discusses the beginning of the world, gods like Chaos, Gaia, and Eros, and the genealogy of the gods. Hesiod's work took all of the different mythologies spread among different regions of Greece and turned them into one national narrative for the entire nation.

The drawings are simple but captivating, creative and unique in every way. It blew my mind to know that Ms. Li's mother drew each and every one of them by hand, and I would definitely recommend this book as a gift to friends & family of all ages!

EDITION INTEGRALE EXCEPTIONNELLE

By Jean-Claude Well written as one would expect from such a classical author.A true to life story and a compelling easy read.Even though sheltered from needs in terms of parents' love and money, one bad decision can change all of that overnight and shatter one's future. The story highlights what some women have to endure whilst looking for happiness, including the abuse of a mother's unconditional love for her child.Happy ending.Quote " La vie, ca n'est jamais si bon ni si mauvais qu'on croit".Great value at no cost from Amazon.

Excerpt from Homiletical Commentary on the Book of JobThe following work was originally intended to form part of Dr. Van Doren's "Suggestive and Homiletic Commentary on the Old and New Testaments;" and consequently to be accompanied with critical notes similar to those in the Authors Commentary on the Epistle to the Romans, already published in connection with that series. That undertaking, however, having been given up by Dr. Van Doren, it was proposed to the writer by the Editors of the "Homiletical Commentary on the Books of the Old Testament" to reconstruct and adapt his work, so that it might be admitted as part of their series. The object of the Editors of the "Homiletical Commentary," however, was rather to aid in the use of existing commentaries than to produce a new one, intending their series to contain as little as possible of what might be found in other expositions. The writer is deeply conscious of the many imperfections adhering to his work; he has, however, made it his endeavour, as far as he was able, to carry out the object of the Editors; and, at the same time, to prepare an expository and homiletical work on what is acknowledged to be one of the most difficult books of the Bible, which may, by the Divine blessing, be useful both to ordinary readers of the Word and to those who have to minister to others. In the preparation of his work the Author has availed himself of all the critical and practical aids within his reach, in order that it might exhibit the results of the studies of the most eminent Biblical scholars and expositors of the Word up to the present time.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. NOT children's lit: George MacDonald on the Imagination By bmuse George MacDonald wrote and published the occasional essay during his career; later in life, he collected some of his short non-fiction pieces in this anthology. Don't make too much of the title, which comes from lowlander Scottish dialect. Think of it as a way to make the George MacDonald Miscellaneous Writings unique and impossible to confuse with anyone else's anthology of essays, as that was its undoubted intent (besides also signaling that the author is Scottish....)."The Fantastic Imagination," which closes the volume, is probably the most often quoted and referenced of the pieces in "A Dish of Orts," and rightly so, since it bears directly upon writing symbolic, mythological fairy-tale-style fiction. And there is a piece which deserves to be carefully studied by more readers. It does not open "A Dish of Orts" but it is near the beginning, and it is titled:"A Sketch of Individual Development."Literature professor and critic Richard H Reis, who distinguished himself with a small pithy book reviewing George MacDonald's writing (titled George MacDonald), makes much of "A Sketch of Individual Development," quoting it heavily. Reis' opinion is that this essay anticipates modern psychology in general, and Freud and Jung in particular. Although MacDonald, always religious and mystical, orients "development" towards development of the spirit and the soul as well as the personality, he also proves himself a keen observer of infancy and childhood, describing an infantile attachment to parent figures followed by the struggle for individuation. I rather doubt that MacDonald was taught this stuff in divinity school, nor earlier as a chemistry and science major in Aberdeen. MacDonald has studied from the school of life, and has responded to his studies from the vantage point of a soul wiser and more insightful than the majority of his fellow men in his time and place."A Sketch of Individual Development" is difficult to read; it is like cracking a nut to get at the meat inside. I recommend first reviewing Richard Reis' analysis and breakdown of the essay, in Reis' book, and then using this as a guide to MacDonald's lengthy, heavy piece of writing. Not for the faint of heart, or the immature, or those wanting in patience -- but infinitely rewarding.

Another good book by George MacDonald By Dave George MacDonald had a great way of looking at the world, and that comes through in this book, which is all about the poetry of Shakespeare and others. Not the easiest read, but a good book if you are a fan of poetry and literary criticism.

How delighted I was to find George MacDonald's writings for the first time. As an aspiring writer, his example gives much food for thought, more than mere table scraps.
