During the woodturning renaissance of the 1970's, one man emerged as the primary inspiration for scores of woodturners. His name was Bob Stocksdale. Unpretentious and extraordinarily talented, Stocksdale was a master at finding the natural beauty in wood for his functionally elegant bowls. His love for exotic timbers, his careful attention to selecting just the right piece, and his gifted use of simple tools were the trademarks that gained him celebrity status and set the standard for excellence in the contemporary wood art movement. In 1987, author Ron Roszkiewicz had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to spend a week in Stocksdale's home workshop to hear him describe his life, work, thoughts, and opinions. With text transcribed directly from audiotapes and never-before-seen photographs, The Perfect Wooden Bowl illustrates more than just how a turning legend shapes, sharpens or finishes - it's a snapshot of an American original.

Review

"Valuable for those who make or love crafts."  —Library Journal

"For me the most valuable part of the book is the photography—some 50 examples of his work."  —Fine Woodworking.com

"Recommended for the turner who is serious about the essence of good form."  —Australian Wood Review

"An intimate look at the turner, his approach to wood turning, and his life-long quest to turn the perfect bowl."  —Canadian Woodworking Magazine E-Newsletter

"Those photos alone are worth the price of the book. I absolutely enjoyed the book. I recommend the book to anyone who is interested in the history of woodturning and wants to look into the daily life of one of the true masters of the lathe . . . this book with definitely be added to my library."  —Woodturning Design

"With text transcribed directly from audiotapes and never-before-seen photographs, this book illustrates more than just how a turning legend shapes, sharpens and finishes—it's a snapshot of an American original."  —The Crafts Report

"A book that will be of value to collectors and curators, as it shares the artist's story through biographical details, copies of letters and memorabilia. Yet, the book is largely designed for the growing market of amateur woodturners who can learn from Stockdale's techniques for turning bowls and sharpening tools, as well as his marketing savvy. It also provides a continuum in the field of contemporary craft, celebrating those who came before."  —Craft Arts International

"Another great feature of To Turn the Perfect Wooden Bowl is the step-by-step instructions supplied by Bob Stocksdale and his excellent advice on how best to turn a bowl and platter, as well as sharpening tools, sanding and finishing tips. This is a very unusual book and is perfect if you are looking to learn more about Bob Stocksdale himself."  —Woodturning Magazine (UK)

MCIVOR I have been a fan of Bob Stocksdale's work from the moment I took up turning--in fact, Stocksdale is one of the people that, through his work inspired me to take up the craft. So I pre-ordered this book, much anticipating its arrival and subsequent understanding of the drive and inspiration behind the man's work. Uh-uh.Stocksdale never taught a woodturning class, never wrote a book on the topic, never made an instructional video. Take that as a warning. This book is the result of a week that the author spent in Stocksdale's shop, "looking over his shoulder," trying to figure out what made Bob Stocksdale tick. He (the author) admits up front that it was difficult to get Stocksdale to talk about his work, or to dig into his own psyche. I'd go with impossible. We as readers are rewarded with bits and pieces of conversations from the week-long visit, and whatever the author could glean or intuit through observations. You'll not get anyone's life story in a week, especially if your subject is Stocksdale, who for better or worse was just not interested in talking about himself. Stocksdale left behind a body of work that inspired the first generation of American turners, and anyone turning today should know about that body of work. But in the end, I think that's all we'll get of Bob.For the photos alone I am grateful for this book and will probably keep it on my shelf for occasional reference and inspiration. But for the text, well, I just didn't learn much. Stocksdale the man, along with his methods, will remain unknown.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading on how he became a celebrity woodturner.. the problems he encountered as s woodturner and his sources for exotic woods. Its a fast read and i re read it just to make sure i didn't miss out on any of the details. I am sure we are all going through what Mr. Stocksdale had gone through. Buy the book its worth reading :)

It is hard to believe such gorgeous wood exists and that artists can see and bring forth that splendor. Whether or not you are a woodworker, this book is worth owning for the sheer magnificence of the photographs. A great gift!

Edan Benn Epstein’s fourth novel, The Anteater, follows the hopes, fears, and secrets of seven men working for a third rate messenger service in 1985. Over the course of three days in November, the perfect storm – both literal and emotional – threatens to change each of their lives forever. Magic intertwines soulfully with grim reality in a tale of deep inner longing forever just one step ahead of existential checkmate. The Anteater integrates seven life stories together, all of which are set against the vital backdrop of Los Angeles itself. “This is not a novel about the big and glamorous Los Angeles, the dramatic Los Angeles, or the evil and violent Los Angeles. It is about something much harder to portray: the Caulfields and Willy Lomans of L.A….. offering a tantalizing cross-section of L.A.’s variegated human as well as physical landscape….The Anteater delves deeply into areas of the human psyche that fiction rarely explores

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Great Book By MarkC Edan Epstein’s novel, “The Anteater”, is set in a messenger company in Los Angeles, which serves as a refuge for characters suffering from the kinds of sordid, life-crippling problems that will not allow them to hold down any other work. As these characters busily traverse the grey, industrial wastelands of Los Angeles, a megastorm (literally) bears down on their little anthill, which will force them to either rise above themselves or sink to the bottom of their humanity. There are many reasons to read this compelling and unusual book. First, the writing is really top drawer. Epstein writes with wit, humor, and stunning clarity. His descriptions and human insights are uncanny, with some passages soaring to such dizzying heights as to recall the best in modern literature. The cast of characters is a smorgasbord of different ethnicities and social groups, and the book offers a tantalizing cross-section of L.A.’s variegated human as well as physical landscape. Finally, “The Anteater” delves deeply into areas of the human psyche that fiction rarely explores. Most characters one reads about in novels meet a baseline of normalcy, but Epstein bursts through that. Some of his characters are riven by such devastating psychological forces that they barely hold onto their sanity, and sometimes don’t. These forces utterly dominate them and render them dysfunctional. There are alcoholics, sexual cripples, and others who are just generally marginal.Herein lies the challenge of Epstein’s work. We are not used to reading about and identifying with such characters, and there is some heavy slogging as we follow them on their decent to the bottom. However, Epstein lightens the load with some intriguing episodes of magical realism, and there is plenty else to delight the reader as well.“The Anteater” may not be a novel for everyone, but if you want something different, and are up for a literary challenge that inspires and entertains, then by all means, give it a try. Epstein is an author who deserves to be read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. If you enjoy character-driven stories By James If you enjoy character-driven stories, you'll enjoy this book. The book won me over to actually caring about its many characters -- quite an accomplishment, since in the beginning I found every one of them revolting! That is because most of the characters are seedy, sleezy, or slimy (no, they're not the seven dwarfs), and they live and work in seedy, sleezy or slimy environments. Most of them are pathetic and lost. Think Holden Caulfield. But just as Holden comes to lasting life in the reader's imagination, so do the many characters in The Anteater, and as you get to know them, you begin to care about them. (As mentioned in another review, the book is largely dialogue, which is lively and authentic, and really draws the reader in.)This is not a novel about the big and glamorous Los Angeles, the dramatic Los Angeles, or the evil and violent Los Angeles. It is about something much harder to portray: the Caulfields and Willy Lomans of L.A., a group of little nobodies, small-fries who find themselves stuck with piddling jobs as messengers, little transporters trying to eke out a few dollars dodging traffic. Some have resigned themselves to the treadmill. Others have their hopes, mostly unrealistic. One dreams of becoming a rock music sensation -- and ends up with half a dozen or so listeners around the world. Another dreams of becoming a big-wig project manager for a construction firm; but his pathetically overreaching ego knocks him right back down. Another dreams of escape to a cabin in the Pacific Northwest. And so on. These people are gasping for meaning, but like asthmatics they cannot catch a breath of full, clean air.Only one character is and remains relatively content, and he is a simpleton. His wish is to be an anteater, whose nobility, contentment, and perfect suitability for its purpose in life – finding and eating ants – he greatly admires. While everyone else scurries, gasps, grasps, and stalls, simpleton Max moves steadily along, just being there, with ill-will towards none, always ready to help, not asking for much, and therefore generally quite content – like an anteater.Yes, there is deep philosophy underpinning this novel, and plenty of food for thought for those who like to ponder existential issues. Epstein is a thinker as well as a writer, and The Anteater will make you think. It is also, in its own way, a spiritual work. To select people, places and things that are mean, repulsive, or pathetic (or all of the above), and write about them in such a way as to invest them with real human significance, is a spiritually redemptive act. The Anteater is a compassionate look at how the human condition plays itself out for the people most often overlooked.

By Richard Campbell The Anteater was truly a great read, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a well-written and highly entertaining piece of fiction.Years from now, I have a feeling I'll be proud to have been among the first to review this novel. Epstein weaves a fascinating tale of a disparate group of characters, who have in common that they're all drivers for a somewhat seedy messenger service in Southern California. One thing that distinguishes this work from most fiction I've read, is the way the story is largely told through dialogue. Don't let the page count of this hold you back, because most pages are filled with vivid dialogue, that lets you get to know the characters and follow the story, while keeping your interest and making the pages turn faster. But the descriptive paragraphs show that the author has a fine touch for insightful detail, in addition to the fantastic dialogue. As we meet these characters, we follow them through their various adventures, both on the job and off. In the process we also get a fascinating look at Los Angeles, and it's many neighborhoods, freeways, and surrounding areas.Epstein masterfully weaves a complex and intriguing tapesty of a plot, resulting in a powerful series of climactic scenes that can't be discussed here without spoilers.I don't often enjoy reading fiction these days, but I'm so very glad I picked up The Anteater, and I have a feeling that many other positive reviews will follow.

‘An exquisite piece of work. I do not remember anything written about cats that was as good as this’ – Compton Mackenzie ‘A book to charm cat lovers everywhere’ – Kirkus Reviews The Little White King was the loveliest of Marguerite Steen’s long line of cats. As an only child, animals had filled a larger part in her life than human beings. Growing up, she lived in a remote cottage, in the depth of Lakeland woods; squirrels, rabbits, moles, grass-snakes and field-mice were her companions. She was surrounded by innumerable cats – she recalls ‘a cloud of purr’ – and learned the subtleties of cat behaviour. Above all, she learned to love them, and to respect cat character, with its many departures from the code human beings attempt to impose on them. Among other things, she learned that cats are capable of deep fidelity and ferocious courage. But none of her many cats compared to her final, favourite Little White King. The life of the Little White King was a brief one, but from the point of view of any cat lover – or indeed any lover of good writing – well worth recording. Born stone deaf, but with beautiful snow-white fur, and love of human companionship, Steen soon took the place of his mother, protecting him and supporting him as he learnt to survive without the use of one of his senses. Anyone who has owned and cared for a young cat will find much to remind them of the small being that contributed to the happiness and comfort of their home. The record unfolds itself against the background of the matchless Berkshire countryside and the Georgian cottage to which Miss Steen has retreated from post-war London; the book is thus a picture of a most gifted writer’s country life as well as the biography of a little cat.

Praise for Marguerite Steen

‘Miss Steen is a superb manipulator of scene, and she makes her places as alive as her people’ - Daily Telegraph ‘Rich and enjoyable’ - The Observer ‘fine scenes and piquant portriats’ - The Sunday Times ‘a vivid narrative’ - Manchester Guardian ‘full of colour and character’ - John o' London's Weekly ‘rich, lavish, violent, passionate’ - Evening News Marguerite Steen (12 May 1894 – 4 August 1975) was a British writer. Very much at home among creative people, she wrote biographies of the Terrys, of her friend Hugh Walpole, of the 18th century poet and actress (and sometime mistress to the Prince of Wales) Mary 'Perdita' Robinson, and of her own lover, the artist Sir William Nicholson. Her first major success was Matador (1934), for which she drew on her love of Spain, and of bullfighting. Also a best-seller on both sides of the Atlantic was her massive saga of the slave-trade and Bristol shipping, The Sun Is My Undoing (1941). She was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 1951. Her two volumes of autobiography, Looking Glass (1966) and Pier Glass (1968) offer some delightful views of the English creative set from the 1920s to the 1950s. This coloring book is the product of my imagination when everything was going wrong in my life. I could write a book about all the troubles, but no one would read it anyway. So, my answer was to produce this coloring book. I get about the same relief to my sanity by creating the coloring books that many get from coloring them. Coloring is a well accepted relaxation technique and is also used for relief of stress. I don’t claim to be any sort of a professional but I know that for myself and my family coloring is a great stress relief therapy. I placed the resource page to the back of the book so that you could cut out the back pages if you wanted to. You have my permission to copy any of the pages for friends and family to color.

Bud's Adult Coloring Books Volume 3: Coloring Books to Relieve stress and have fun. Original Mandala, by Charles L. (Bud) Evans

About the Author I have been through enough trials to know what it takes to get through life. I have failed more than anybody I know. I also have tried more things than anybody in my acquaintances. This qualifies me to write a book on how to succeed and survive the 21st century. I have a PhD from the School of Hard Knocks. We have been through the following disasters: • Bankrupt due to health reasons. • Burned out by fire twice • House fire in Shelton, Washington • Hanford Fire of 2000 from Hanford Nuclear Reser-vation $250,000 loss. • Put out of business by Benton County on a change of zoning applications. • Fired from a $100K per year job because I would not lie for the government or their contractors. • Assessed unreasonable rates by the local irrigation district while on a fixed income. My education and experience provide the knowledge to write this book. Many parts of this guide will be from other pa-pers and books that I have written. This will not be a complete guide on survival but it will be the best that I can provide based upon my knowledge. This book is based upon the best knowledge available at the time of writing. Any information that you use and implement is your choice and the outcome is your responsibility. These are the reasons I make coloring books for relaxation. Charles L. (Bud) Evans

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Pio's genuine masterpiece By Alex Lukic As the first of his novel trilogy, "La lucha por la vida", Pio Baroja spawns the Forrest Gump-like character of Manuel Alcázar whose tribulations and improvisational spirit identify the trademark individual character of turn-of-the-20th-century Spain. "La Busca" ["The Search"] kicks off this saga with the main character dealing with hoodlums and the social unwanted. In the background of a saturnine misery, Manuel resorts to his creativity and good fortune to unwillingly climb the social ladder. His tendency to hesitate on decisions and his considerable aloofness turn out to be his greater allies. Manuel is the behind-the-scenes character, following events in the lowly suburbs of Madrid, coyly eyewitnessing the tension and survival among wanton groups.Baroja's work earmarks an era of historical disaster in the fading Spanish empire following the 1898 defeat to the emerging American empire. His story cranks the volume of the agonizing voices of helpless creatures underlining the scope of social and political disaster.

One of the most famous poets of the 20th century, William Butler Yeats (1865-1939) was so popular and renowned during his time that he was the leader of what came to be known as the Irish Literary Revival, on the strength of his short stories and vivid poetry. Eventually it would lead to his winning a Nobel Prize in 1923. It’s no surprise that Ireland loved its home grown son; the Nobel Prize Committee credited him for “inspired poetry, which in a highly artistic form gives expression to the spirit of a whole nation.”Before Yeats won awards, his interest in spirituality and folklore drove him to write at length about Irish mythology and the occult before the turn of the 20th century. In many ways, it was Yeats who popularized the characters of Celtic mythology and medieval Irish folklore for contemporaneous audiences.

There are a few of the frequently anthologized hits, "No Second Troy" and "The Fascination of What's Difficult," as well as plenty of more obscure and less successful poems. This slim volume does contain the brief and beautiful "A Drinking Song," which I think is Yeats' most moving love poem and one you should read right now if you haven't before. The real surprise here is the verse drama The Green Helmet, which combines Celtic mythology, Irish politics, social criticism, and medieval legend in a tightly plotted folk tale. The play's rhymed dialogue is clear and readable, even more than the poems that precede it. With a plot that echoes Gawain and the Green Knight, Yeats's Irish heroes Laegaire (read as Leary), Conall, and Cuchulain battle each other as they try to outwit a faerie-like, fox-eyed trickster known as the Red Man. While there's plenty of political commentary in the lines ("Here neighbour wars on neighbour and why there is no man knows, / And if a man is lucky all wish his luck away, And take his good name from him between a day and a day."), the language is free of Symbolist influence and the mythological allusions don't overwhelm. This is both an accessible and a satisfying short play.

He Writes Prose Too By propertius I admit to being in love with Yeats' poetry as ones loves his first paramour and indeed Yeats was close to being my first. Therefore I write this to admit that I find his verse more appealing than his plays and I tend to read his plays with an eye toward his verse. That being said this collection is a fine compromise but I would not suggest for the first time reader of Yeats. In fact I would advise the uninitiated to read his works backwards and then begin at his earliest period again. The mythology and arcane history that Yeats used to literally create the Irish experience has nothing to match it in literary history although a case may by made for Homer and the Greeks. Yes, William Butler Yeats is that much of a profound artist.

Many famous poems - and an odd play By Classics Lover This book is a collection of Yeats' poems - many well known, all interesting - and a short one-act play, "the green helmet", which is given by a mysterious, mystical man to a group of warriors at the price of one of their own's life. The play is, to me, extremely obscure and odd, but - as always with Yeats - it is a religious allegory, of one of the men willing to willingly, Christ-like, lay down his life for this treasure, the helmet, to be given to all (or so it seems to me at first reading, at any rate). Some of Yeats' writing aged badly or is obscure to those who are not Catholics, but the poems are very often beautiful and well worth reading.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. good! By michelle this was a good book. two sisters look so much alike that they switch places. one marries and the other, older sister, takes on her persona of wild child. the husband of the one that got married is under the impression that he married the "mature" sister, he was wrong:). altogether a cute book. the only thing that was a little hard to follow were the names of all the men in love with the single sister. i just pushed through and figured it out. this book also had some sinister stuff happening, which went just far enough, any more and i wouldnt have liked it. i dont like gruesome books or mysteries. enough of that goes on in real life, i read for enjoyment:)4 stars because of the confusing mens names and also because i think that they could have done more with the married sister.

Wonderfully crafted prose By Ron McMillan This is a beautifully crafted book that takes us back to a turbulent time in British history and paints a multi-faceted picture with insightful, thoroughly-researched period observation and exquisitely written dialogue. Ajay Close steers clear of the predictable in her construction of the narrative, forcing us to think about what we are reading and to bury ourselves in a tale of violence, despair - even futility - and love. This book will live with you for a long time.

Excerpt from Sociology for the South: Or the Failure of Free SocietyWe dedicate this little work to you, because it is a zealous and honest effort to promote your peculiar interests. Society has been so quiet and contented in the South - it has suffered so little from crime or extreme poverty, that its attention has not been awakened to the revolutionary tumults, uproar, mendicity and crime of free society. Few are aware of the blessings they enjoy, or of the evils from which they are exempt. From some peculiarity of taste, we have for many years been watching closely the perturbed workings of free society. Its crimes, its revolutions, its sufferings and its beggary, have led us to investigate its past history, as well as to speculate on its future destiny. This pamphlet has been hastily written, but is the result of long observation, some research and much reflection. Should it contain suggestions that will enlist abler pens to show that free society is a failure and its philosophy false, our highest ambition will be gratified. Believing our positions on these subjects to be true, we feel sanguine they are destined to final vindication and triumph.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Sociology for the South: Or the Failure of Free Society (Classic Reprint), by George Fitzhugh

About the Author George Fitzhugh, lawyer, planter, newspaperman, sociologist, was born in Virginia in 1806. He married in 1829, had nine children, and lived until the Civil War in his wife's home in Port Royal, Virginia. During this period he practiced law, was employed briefly in the Attorney General's office, wrote for various periodicals and newspapers, and published two books, Sociology for the South, or the Failure of Free Society (1854) and Cannibals All! (1857). After a foray into abolitionist territory in 1856, including a debate in New Haven with Wendell Phillips, he returned to the South more convinced than ever of his position, and up to the War he remained hopeful of converting the North. Fitzhugh died in Texas in 1881.

Nice to have at this price but imperfect By Pierre Lemieux The problem with this book is that at least half a dozen pages are missing a line at the bottom. I had to look up a Kindle version to complete the pages. There are also a few OCR typos. It's nice to have the book for a reasonable price, but it is not perfect. (On the idea side, it's quite worth reading: Fitzhugh, who was a defender of slavery, argues against free trade and liberty in general: "Liberty is an evil which government is intended to correct." He was at least a consistent statist.)

An important resource in the history of political thought regarding the antinomy of labor and capital By Patrick & Caterina Provost-Smith Fitzhugh's work is no doubt a shocker to contemporary sensibilities, and not without reason. It is an apologetic for slavery as a system of labor, made by a Virginian who wrote for the benefit of the slave society of the ante-bellum South. But it is not merely that, nor must the indefensibility of slavery as a system entirely relegate to the dustbin Fitzhugh's work. It is important to understand - intellectually speaking - what was behind the system of slavery that permeated the South, but also its function in a much larger exchange of ideas that crossed over the Atlantic regarding the problems of labor and capital, and to what ends human labor belonged, and what obligations were brought upon those who employed and benefited from labor. Fitzhugh's work is also a demonstration that slavery cannot be reduced to matters of race and racism. Those were obviously and incontestably part of the system of slave labor as it developed in the American colonies, the Caribbean, and what became the United States after its war of secession from Britain, but they were not the whole of it, nor an adequate explanation in and of itself of how and why a slave society developed and flourished in these areas. Fundamentally, it's about labor. So, this is a very important read for anyone who explores the pro-slavery apologetics of the South. Nobody is going to defend slavery anymore, as that is a closed question, and that is an unambiguously good thing. But for understanding on a historical and intellectual level much of what the issue of slavery revolved around - in terms of labor, capital, labor relations, race, concepts of freedom, cash economy, etc. - Fitzhugh's work is extremely important. His writings have been well analyzed by some historians of the American South, notably C. Vann Woodward and Eugene Genovese, and so having access to a reproduction of Fitzhugh's two primary texts is invaluable. Especially as some modern studies of slavery have turned to emphasize the relationship between the plantation economy of the South and capitalism as an politico-economic system, Fitzhugh's work is important to grasping the anti-capitalist critique in which proponents of a slave-labor society were often invested, and the centrality of the system of benevolent paternalism (care of the laborer "from the cradle to the grave") to both that critique and the rapprochement that was sought with socialist and early communist thought developing in Europe, especially during and after the 1848 revolts. To comprehend Fitzhugh's argument that slavery was the "beau ideal of communism" can be a mind-bender, both by virtue of being on "this" side of history that has categorically rejected slavery as a labor system, and on account of the deep anti-socialism and anti-communism of much American political thought. But those questions remain important and central to ongoing political thought and modes of social, economic, and political critique. Fitzhugh's work is an important chapter in the development of anti-capitalist critique, and an important moment in the unpredictable and complex process of working towards a resolution of some kind to the problems, as Fitzhugh put it, of "labor and capital."That resolution has yet to be reached in contemporary political economy, or in much political thought of the last hundred and fifty years. The ending of slavery was undoubtedly necessary, and there are few who would dispute such a thing today. The means are another question, and a more complex issue - but not a question of primary importance in understanding Fitzhugh's work or why aspects of it still might matter more than simply being an issue of historical curiosity. Necessary as the ending of slavery was, the real "winner" of the bloodiest war in American history was unregulated capitalism, the use of race tensions to drive down wages and labor costs for both blacks and whites (and others), and the deployment of US gov't troops (and what we would now call private security firms, like the Pinkertons) to break the back of the labor movements by putting down strikes with considerable force. Government investment in private enterprise exploded during and after the war, banking systems were brought into place, and a currency invented and enforced that funded the unregulated capitalism of the so-called "Guilded Age" of "robber-baron capitalism." The level of militarization that accompanied the war was also mobilized in the Indian Wars (at times fought as wars of extermination), and then the development of open US imperialism and colonialism with the conquests of Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. Hence the ante-bellum work of Fitzhugh (and other Southern writers) demonstrates at least some aspects of the various levels of critical resistance to the triumph of capitalism, with its counterpart in expansionist and colonialist conflicts and policies. Some Southern pro-slavery writers were open advocates of expansionism and imperialism, but clearly not all, and likely not most. One need not embrace Fitzhugh's preferred solution to the problem of labor and capital (non-race-based slavery), nor accede to his portrayal of the system (in actuality) as benign paternalism, to come to understand the importance of his work as part of the trans-Atlantic struggle to articulate and realize a system of politics and economy that at least aspired to have humane ends, and aspired to resist and replace crude and abusive capitalist labor relations as they were then to be found in Europe as well as almost every Northern manufacturing area, and in some areas of the South. It was an attempt, at least, to place care for the whole of the human being and quality of life above the question of economic and political freedom that left persons vulnerable to capitalist predation, abuse, enforced dependency, and other forms of exploitation. His statement that "wage slavery is desultory to actual slavery" is not something that is defensible, but "wage slavery" is nonetheless a historical and contemporary reality that the concept of "freedom" often ignores and overlooks.Again, Fitzhugh's arguments in favor of non-raced-based slavery as a solution to the problem of labor and capital are not defensible, but they are nevertheless important for their insights into the problems of labor and capital, and exemplary of some strands of trans-Atlantic political thought that sought to resolve the antinomy between labor and capital in favor of human quality of life and something resembling distributive justice of the kind that said "from each according to their ability, to each according to their needs."

By David Allen Purchased as a curiosity of hearing the other side of those who had debated / argued with the founders of America. Discovered his arguments were keen, intelligently articulated, and has illuminated how very much more educated they were. How do we create today a lifestyle where the middle class and the largest income earners doesn't have such a divide. Trade may only be good for the few, roads may have slowed developing communities inland with the loss of the brightest individuals manufacturing to the coast. What if being an indebted servant is better than what is available in the job market? What if the u.s military jobs today pay far more than most middle class jobs? Is wage slavery the normal today, and government pensions better than middle class 401k plans? Is it cheaper to replace Americans today, than to take care of them? This book is. Recommended
