The Princess Priscilla's Fortnight, by Elizabeth Von Arnim

About the Author Elizabeth von Arnim (1866–1941), born Mary Annette Beauchamp, was an Australian-born British novelist. By marriage she became Gräfin (Countess) von Arnim-Schlagenthin, and by a second marriage, Countess Russell. Although known in her early life as Mary, "after the publication of her first book, she was known to her readers, eventually to her friends, and finally even to her family as Elizabeth." and she is now invariably referred to as Elizabeth von Arnim. She also wrote under the pen name Alice Cholmondeley. In 1898 she started her literary career by publishing Elizabeth and Her German Garden, a semi-autobiographical novel about a rural idyll published anonymously and, as it turned out to be highly successful, reprinted 20 times within the first year. Von Arnim wrote another 20 books, which were all published "By the author of Elizabeth and Her German Garden". Enchanted April was adapted into an Academy Award-nominated feature film, directed by Mike Newell, in 1992, and a Tony Award-nominated stage play by Matthew Barber, in 2003. Her book Mr. Skeffington was made into a movie starring Bette Davis and Claude Rains in 1944.

By Kat Mills After reading - and thoroughly enjoying - The Enchanted April, I wanted to read more by Elizabeth von Arnim, so I ordered Princess Priscilla's Fortnight. It was absolutely delightful! Von Arnim's characters are so vibrant, and her language is unique. I found myself laughing out loud as I journeyed along with Priscilla and Fritzi on their adventure. I gave the book to my parents, and they both thoroughly enjoyed it as well. A real hidden gem!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Charming By Daniella I chose this rating because I enjoyed the way E. von Arnim writes. The style, the choice of words and the way she expresses herself. She is a distinguished socialite with a great sense of humor, and a keen observer of society. She also is a natural at storytelling. I was searching for something pleasant to read and found The Princess Priscilla's Fortnight to be refined, enjoyable and entertaining.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Even the best of plans can go astray By Katherine Rollins The princess and her teacher decide that they want to lead a simpler life, away from the opulence of palace life. They escape to a cottage in the country, but find that it is not as idyllic as they had hoped. They manage to upset the lives of the people in the little village, just by being there. It is a lot harder to be poor and good than they had expected.

  • The Sea-Wolf is a 1904 psychological adventure novel by American novelist Jack London. The book's protagonist, Humphrey van Weyden, is a literary critic who is a survivor of an ocean collision and who comes under the dominance of Wolf Larsen, the powerful and amoral sea captain who rescues him. Its first printing of forty thousand copies was immediately sold out before publication on the strength of London's previous The Call of the Wild.[1] Ambrose Bierce wrote, "The great thing—and it is among the greatest of things—is that tremendous creation, Wolf Larsen... the hewing out and setting up of such a figure is enough for a man to do in one lifetime... The love element, with its absurd suppressions, and impossible proprieties, is awful."

This is one of them. It's the tale of a rather bookish "gentleman" who is virtually press-ganged to work on a sailing ship. Through vicious hardship he is faced with the choice of survival (and in the process compromising his morality) or almost certain death. The main villain, if you will, is the Captain of the ship, who's physical strength and presence is overwhelming. Some of the language is a little archaic, but the Kindle dictionary didn't let me down. It's well worth the read. Get past the first ten pages, and you may find it hard to put down.

By Dave Schwinghammer When I first dipped into THE SEA WOLF, I was struck by its similarity to CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS. Humphrey van Weydon's ferry-steamer, The Martinez, is rammed by another ship in San Francisco Bay in a heavy fog. Van Weydon is rescued by Wolf Larsen, captain of the seal-hunter, The Ghost. Larsen refuses to take Van Weydon ashore, laughing at his offer of money. Once again, I am reminded of another famous book, MOBY DICK, and Larsen is Captain Ahab. Ruthless and single-minded, Larsen decides to make Van Weydon his cabin boy on this four month trip to provide seal pelts for fashionable American women. Van Weydon resists until Larsen catches hold of his arm and squeezes. A man of letters who freely admits never working a day in his life, Van Weydon does everything he's told from that point on, including aiding and abetting the Captain as he mistreats his crew. Early on we learn some of Larsen's motivation when he and Van Weydon have a literary discussion. We discover that Larsen is a literary bully. He's never spent a day in school, but he reads Shakespeare, Robert Browning and John Milton. London's theme becomes clear and Larsen and van Weydon argue about immortality, van Weydon declaring that man has a soul; Larsen retorting with a Scrooge-like "Bah!" And suddenly we have the first gleanings of an existentialist novel. If there were no God, how should man behave? Larsen, seeing evil everywhere he looks, decides he will do whatever is best for him personally. The conflict is not precisely good versus evil. Van Weydon is a weakling, a pampered rich man, a coward. There is also much to admire about Wolf Larsen. He outduels seven men during a mutiny. He's constantly reading, constantly trying to understand. When Van Weydon's story arc begins to ascend--he learns seamanship, rebuilds the ship when its masts are destroyed--we can't help but give Larsen a bit of credit. Larsen never took no for an answer, no task was too difficult. Another interesting element in the book is London's fledgling steps toward women's liberation. Van Weydon falls in love with another castaway, Maud Brewster, and together they overcome storms, isolation on a small seal rookery, and sabotage. I guess I knew London was a better writer than the man who wrote CALL OF THE WILD (His short story "To Build a Fire" is one of my favorites), but I wasn't expecting a philosophical discourse wrapped around a sea adventure.

I had never read Jack London before but after visiting his burnt down estate in Northern California I became interested in his writing. This book is excellent, entertaining and fast paced. The kindle edition seems not to be missing any pages. Great Free Download.

They have been best friends since they were kids By Amazon Customer The story follows a character named Ella Cane, a high school girl experiencing her senior year. The beginning is rather nostalgic; her world revolves around her friends grades, extracurricular activities, etc, but her pervasive focus is on the boy she loves, named Byron. They have been best friends since they were kids, and care for each other deeply. However, Byron is shown to be depressed, and Ella begins to worry about him. She is devastated when she learns that he committed suicide. Her anguish is palpable, and all too familiar to anyone who has lost a loved one. The pain that doesn't desist, not wanting to eat or sleep, the overwhelming sense of loss.Ella's narration is candid and heartfelt. While the theme is about depression and suicide, it is also largely about coming of age. Tragedy is something we all experience, but Ella urges us to take something away from it. I highly recommend this book. It is insightful, as it is moving.

Her world gets turned upside down when her best friend Byron commits suicide.. Ella's emotions are uncontrollable, but she is in such a dark place after the tragedy that she is losing everyone else along the way.. The lessons throughout this novel are powerful.. "Life is for the living", but moving on is not easy. Many tears were shed reading this book, but the smiles that I also experienced made the hard lessons feel purposeful. This young girl's journey of finding herself again, and discovering who she really is will have you rooting for her all the way!

I wish I had this book during that time to remind me that there are always people who are willing to help. This story lets the reader hear a tragic story through a friend's perspective and I hope everybody has a chance to embrace this book's importance. I highly recommend this book to everybody. Thanks Hannah!

By Grumpy Reader This is apparently one of several novels featuring (to quote a 1910 ad for the book)"the admirable red-haired curate J.J. [whose] wild energy turns a peaceful neighborhood into a hotbed of intrigue and suspicion." J.J. is indeed a wonderful character, a schemer creating mischief wherever he goes. A very funny book, laugh out-loud at times. This has me definitely in search of more by G.A. Birmingham.

IF old Jeremy Clapp had not sneezed his teeth into the fire that winter day this story might have had a more seemly beginning; but, being a true record, it must start with that sneeze, because it was the first happening in Georgina Huntingdon's life which she could remember distinctly.

Georgina of the Rainbows, by Annie F. Johnston

About the Author Indiana-born author Annie Fellows Johnston was the creator of several series of children's books that attained widespread popularity in the early twentieth century. Along the lines of "Anne of Green Gables," the charming novel “Georgina of the Rainbows” will cast an enchanting spell on girls looking for something more timeless and classic than the tween drama and supernatural fluff passed off as juvenile fiction these days. This novel was written for and about young ladies, though it has been and likely always will be a classic for the whole family.

Delightful story By The Splendiferous T If you miss Little Women and Betsy-Tacy and Anne of Green Gables, here's another author full of warm and delightful tales about girls growing up at the turn of the century. Johnston is best known for her "Little Colonel" series, but this offshoot keeps with the general theme. Girls moving from the carelessness of childhood to the self-awareness of their influence as young women learn how to use that awareness for the greater good. Georgina learns that she can have a profound impact on the lives around her, even when it may be a struggle between what she wants most and what is the right thing to do.

«This Side of Paradise», F. Scott Fitzgerald's romantic and witty first novel, was written when the author was only twenty-three years old. This semiautobiographical story of the handsome, indulged, and idealistic Princeton student Amory Blaine received critical raves and catapulted Fitzgerald to instant fame.

Amazon.com Review Fitzgerald's first novel, reprinted in the handsome Everyman's Library series of literary classic, uses numerous formal experiments to tell the story of Amory Blaine, as he grows up during the crazy years following the First World War. It also contains a new introduction by Craig Raine that describes critical and popular reception of the book when it came out in 1920.

From Publishers Weekly Fitzgerald's first novel, about a coterie of Princeton socialites, appears in a 75th anniversary edition. Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal Fitzgerald's semiautobiographical first novel was considered intellectual and daring when it was published in 1920. Amory Blaine grows up in St. Paul in the early years of the century. His mother is an alcoholic whose wealth is sufficient to accommodate her eccentricities. She dotes on her son and encourages him to indulge his whims. His father is conspicuously absent. Amory observes the social graces, as befits someone of his class, but he is only capable of doing so superficially. He is always aware of himself and how he fits into his immediate surroundings. Because of this constant self-analysis, he finds it difficult to relax, to accept people as they are, and to make friends. It is at Princeton that Amory comes into his own, determined to make the best of what he considers from the outset to be the best years of his life. Narrator Dick Hill brings Amory to life with an energetic reading that captures the emotional swings of a spoiled and shallow man who never grows up. Recommended for public library collections.?Nann Blaine Hilyard, Fargo P.L., Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

The first thing that struck me on reading this was the timelessness of its subject matter, no matter how dated the setting is. The Ivy League of Fitzgerald's indifferent hero, Amory Blaine, is a thing of the past, with only the faintest reminders of its aura of American royalty remaining today. Reading about Amory's days at Princeton is a bit like looking at the ancient photographs of 19th century football teams that every university seems to have on display in some corner of the campus, with the added twist that most of those long-ago jocks were presumably the sons of bankers and senators. And yet, Fitzgerald's depiction of a whirlwind of exhilaration, alienation, eagerness for the future and a sense that it should all be more meaningful is still all too recognizable to those of us who are just a few years out of college. So like all the best fiction, the story works both on a historical and a contemporary level.Amory isn't the most sympathetic of protagonists. Coming from a non-aristocratic but quite cushy background, he's all you would expect from a Fitzgerald hero: full of himself, indifferent to the less fortunate, somewhat lazy, and at once condescending to and inept with women. But this is a story of young adulthood in the last gasps of the pre-World War I upper-crust, and Amory is the perfect vehicle for illustrating the youth of that time and place. Although the relative lack of details provided about Amory's experience in the war is odd, it adds to his Everyman quality for the generations since his, all of which have had their own reasons for a bleak outlook at some point even if few could match the sheer trauma of 1917-18. The one real flaw in the story is an inconsistent, and often unconvincing, quality when it comes to how and why Amory falls for the several women he endures romantic misadventures with. For all the heartbreak he endures, the reader is often left wondering where his attraction stemmed from in the first place - an odd shortcoming considering how good Fitzgerald was at illustrating that issue in later works. But the romantic episodes that do work are vivid enough to forgive the weaker ones. Also, as usual, Fitzgerald's narrative style is somewhat purple; but he's so good at it that it usually doesn't strike the reader as a problem.Bleak as it may be, this is a great book for anyone who has survived young adulthood and remembers it honestly. Just try not to laugh or cringe next time somebody wants to talk about "the good old days."

Scott Fitzgerald's novels are a one trick pony in the sense that he writes about the same time period (the 1920's), the same kind of people (rich or successful Americans) and protagonists who suffer the same fate (men whose ultimate failures are the result of their own shortcomings and the influence of women). His works are also highly autobiographical. Thus to read Fitzgerald with understanding one should start at the beginning (This Side of Paradise), move to the full bloom of his talent (The Great Gatsby) and culminate at the end (Tender is the Night). It would help to read a good biography along the way. The other option is to just read Gatsby which is one of the finest American novels ever written. This Side of Paradise is his first novel and here we see both the promise of the character, Amory Blaine, and the author. On the very first page of the novel Fitzgerald displays his talent for words in his description of Amory's mother: "All in all Beatrice O'Hara absorbed the sort of education that will be quite impossible ever again; a tutelage measured by the number of things and people one could be contemptuous of and charming about; a culture rich in all the arts and traditions barren of all ideas in the last of those days when the great gardener clipped the inferior roses to produce one perfect bud." This lengthy sentence, despite its seeming awkwardness, tells us all we need to know about Beatrice and suggests that the son will share the same qualities. Other examples of Fitzgerald's facility with words follow. On page 45 he describes Isabelle thusly: "She paused at the top of the staircase. The sensations attributed to divers on springboards, leading ladies on opening nights, and lumpy, husky young men on the day of the Big Game, crowded through her. She should have descended to a burst of drums or a discordant blend of themes from `Thais' and `Carmen.' She had never been so curious about her appearance, she had never been so satisfied with it. She has been sixteen years old for six months." And on page 47 is Isabelle's description of Amory: "she had expected him to be dark and of garter-advertisement slenderness." Only Fitzgerald could come up with such vivid and evocative descriptions. One fault of the book is that it is too episodic without clear transitions. First Amory is a child, then a student at Princeton, then a soldier (although we really do not see this part of this life and it seems to have not affected him), then a lover of Rosalind, then at loose ends, then has a relationship with Eleanor, then the book ends with Amory alone in the world and spouting socialist maxims. It is hard to picture this individual, who for 200 pages has been totally absorbed with himself, suddenly developing a social conscience!Another problem I have is that Fitzgerald tries too hard to show his education. The book is full of poetry and literary references. It is written much as a college student would write a paper to try to impress the professor and thus get a high grade, rather than in a manner that is appropriate to the telling of a story. Fitzgerald is, of course, at this point in his life not far removed from Princeton and perhaps is still writing as a college student. In the end, then, we should read This Side of Paradise for the beauty of the language and not be overly concerned with the story line and characters.

I read it several times and carried it with me around the dreary halls of the oppresive, boring land called High School. Even as a kid I sensed Fitzgerald's amazing writing gift: his effortless way of painting a visual picture in the mind of the reader. He was always extremely funny, off-beat and his charactizations are usually on the mark. Though Amory Blaine's psyche wanders a trifle after the first hundred pages, it's impossible not to gravitate towards him, the things he says and the stunts he pulls. After 25 years I picked up the book again recently. Dusting off my old copy, I re-read the pages that had so captivated me as a teenager. Time dulls many things and people change. But I still love the book and think it's a brilliant first novel. Though it's sappy in spots and it definitely lags at the end, Fitzgerald still had a beautiful ability to harness the emotions of the reader into a world now vanished. It's not his most complete or mature work by a wide margin, but it matters not. This is still a great book, especially for young people or those still a kid at heart.

By Dr. Lorna This is a list of 21 items we usually throw away and a few suggestions for how to use each, such as making flower pots out of milk jugs, pot holders out of old towels, or cleaning out greasy pans with newspaper. The cleaners are basic lemons and baking soda to scrub, plain vinegar as an all-purpose, and rubber gloves to pick up lint. I thought there would be real recipes and not such basic info. This is 21 pages long, and most of it is whitespace and talking about how cool the author thinks it is to save things and make your own cleaners, so it's more like reading a few blog posts.Do a simple internet search for much, MUCH more on the subject. I got this on a free sale and still feel gypped.

Winter and Furneaux By Paul Roberge Two Scotland Yard men (the more methodical Winter and the intuitive, eccentric Furneaux) team up to investigate the shooting of a wealthy financier on the front porch of his mansion. They discover a dysfunctional household: the dead man's invalid wife, a pair of sons who detest one another (half-brothers, one a schemer and the other a fool), a beautiful young ward and the artist who falls in love with her, an oenophile butler, etc. Three-quarters of the way through the novel the killer is revealed whom thereafter Winter and Furneaux try to entrap and capture."The Strange Case of Mortimer Fenly" is a well-paced detective story set in the early 1900's. It has a romantic subplot--a common feature in mystery fiction of the period. What stands out in this novel, however, are the characters and their interaction, especially the interplay between the level-headed Winter and his mercurial and witty partner (albeit underling) Furneaux. This is a solid and enjoyable sample of the type of novel made popular by Christie and others.

Death, love & high adventure all in one day By Patto First published in 1919, this book does not glorify the amateur detective, as so many books did at the time. Rather, the detectives are two expert crime-solvers from Scotland Yard. Superintendent Winter is big, bluff and very British. Detective Inspector Furneau is small and agile. He has wit and charm befitting his French ancestry. With their very different types of intelligence, they make a resourceful team. And their lighthearted bickering and bantering is very entertaining. The crime is baffling. A banker (Mortimer Fenley) is shot and killed on the doorstep of his Elizabethan mansion. A young painter doing sketches on the estate is certain that the shot came from the woods nearby. But the killer can't be found there, nor can the weapon. Fenley's two sons benefit from his death, but one was in London and one inside the house when the shot was fired. These two young men are under-bred and disagreeable. So we feel sorry for Fenley's rich and beautiful young ward, whom both sons are determined to marry. How she escapes their clutches in a delightful story within the story. The plot mixes romance with detection. There is a Midsummer Night's Dream quality to the love story, with Shakespeare quoted liberally. There are fun minor characters, like the dignified butler who's a wine connoisseur and the fat cook at the local inn who enjoys being teased by the young artist, and the constable so proud to be assisting Scotland Yard. There's plenty of traditional detecting – examination of footprints, sneaking around in people's rooms looking for clues, laying of traps in the dead of night. And once the killer is identified, there's a thrilling manhunt.I enjoyed this mystery very much, and recommend the Resurrected Press edition for its readability and careful editing.

Another wonderful Louis Tracy mystery featuring our favorite sleuths, tall/large Mr. Winter, and the highly intelligent, diminuitive Mr. Furneaux. Who killed Mr. Finley, and how? The warring sons, the loving ward? Or perhaps the drugged wife, or a servant? A nifty story with fine twists and turns; great for a rainy day of light, fun reading. And dive into some other gems written by Mr. Tracy. He truly was a fine, early 20th century writer of intriguing tales.

Excerpt from Making Health Certain: A Philosophical and Inspirational Treatise on the Establishment and Maintenance of Health Through a Constructive Mental AttitudeI lived in an age of strife; all about me were men consumed by ill-will, malice, and hatred. They fought one against the other: class against class; even the children taking part, having knowledge of only the inharmonious life; being ill-shapen and miserable, weakly and sickly, with no light shining from their dullen eyes. The women were in the background, natural prey to the passions of men; for men had no love for each other; and even in the midst of clans there was mutual distrust of one for the other; while they fought their supposed enemies, not because they loved each other better, but because they hated them more.Out of the midst of the confusion came a Voice as from heaven and bade me look. As in a cloud of fire there appeared unto me a vision of two divinely perfect beings; their bodies were glorious; as of shining ivory which had life. Out of their eyes looked a Soul of Love; Male and Female were they.As I gazed inthralled, at their feet appeared children; perfect as the twain. Gradually appeared other full-grown men and women round about them; and in their midst other children; all of them perfect. There was no indication of disease, misery, hatred or discontent; all was harmony; strife and malice had been replaced with love and happiness. As I continued to look upon the glorious vision, a Voice spake unto me:"This is the new heaven and the new earth, the two become one, and I, thy God, shall be with thee and thy people."About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The story follows a man of "a noble descent" who calls himself William Wilson because, although denouncing his profligate past, he does not accept blame[dubious – discuss]for his actions, saying that "man was never thus [...] tempted before". After several paragraphs, the narration then segues into a description of Wilson's boyhood, which was spent in a school "in a misty-looking village of England". William meets another boy in his school who shared the same name, who had roughly the same appearance, and who was even born on exactly the same date (January 19, Poe's own birthday). William's name (he asserts that his actual name is only similar to "William Wilson") embarrasses him because it sounds "plebeian" or common, and he is irked that he must hear the name twice as much on account of the other William. The boy also dresses like William, walks like him, and even looks like him, but he could only speak in a whisper, he imitates that whisper exactly. He begins to give orders to William of an unspecified nature, which he refuses to obey, resenting the boy's "arrogance". One night he stole into the other William's bedroom and saw that the boy's face had suddenly become different. Upon seeing this, William left the academy immediately in horror, and in the same week, the other boy followed him. William eventually attends Eton and Oxford, gradually becoming more debauched and performing what he terms "mischief". For example, he stole from a man by cheating at cards. The other William appeared, his face covered, whispered a few words sufficient to alert others to William's behavior, and leaves with no others seeing his face. In his latest caper, he tries to seduce a married woman but the other William stops him at a ball in Rome; the enraged William drags his "unresisting" double—who was wearing identical clothes—into an antechamber, and stabs him fatally. After William does this, a large mirror suddenly seems to appear. Reflected at him, he sees "mine own image, but with features all pale and dabbled in blood": apparently the dead double, "but he spoke no longer in a whisper". The narrator feels as if he is pronouncing the words: "In me didst thou exist—and in my death, see [...] how utterly thou hast murdered thyself."

Sturdy with an excellent binding, printed using easily readable font, and contains a nice touch of antiquity with the slightly torn pages on the side. Looks exactly like the first volume, though the background color of the pictures on the cover, side, and back is red and not blue. For this kind of money it is a real bargain and I recommend it for anyone who wishes to venture into the magnificent world of Sherlock Holmes.

I wanted consistently interesting short stories, and that's exactly what I got. However I made a mistake reading them all straight through in this convenient collection, and the formulaic plots bothered me more than they would have otherwise.I did notice an improvement in terms of the mystery complexity, which I appreciated. No where is this more evident than in "The Valley of Fear", which uses an extremely similar set-up to "A Study in Scarlet". Both stories have two parts, the first of which takes place in 1890's England and the second some years previous in America. However everything else about "The Valley of Fear" is a vast improvement! The murder mystery is much more clever, the action is better paced, and the second part was well-introduced as well as being a mystery story in it's own right! Clearly Sir. Doyle had come into his own as an author by this point, and his skills greatly improved with practice.I also enjoyed the change in Watson's "voice" over time. Sir Doyle seems much more comfortable in his writing abilities by "The Valley of Fear", and I felt there was less awkward prose. I noticed Sir Doyle has a very fanciful way of describing the scene, which appeals to me greatly. I shall always imagine a foggy London day as John Watson saw it.[...]

Sailing Alone Around The World, by Joshua Slocum

About the Author Born in Nova Scotia, Canada, Joshua Slocum was the first man to sail single-handedly around the world. An international bestseller, Sailing Alone Around the World was a critical success upon its publication in 1900. Slocum enjoyed widespread fame in the English-speaking world, including an invitation to speak at a dinner in honor of Mark Twain, until his disappearance while aboard his boat the Spray in 1909. At the time, it was believed his boat had been run down by a steamer or struck by a whale, however it was later determined that the Spray could also have easily capsized. Despite a lifetime at sea, Slocum never learned to swim. He was declared legally dead in 1924.

By Hooksett Bob I own a version of this book which was published in 1956, and wanted to order a copy for a friend. I would be embarrassed to give this as a gift. It looks like a proof-readers copy of a book before it is issued for publication. Chapter headings appear in the middle of pages between text (and are written twice), and there are none of the sketches contained in my earlier version of the book. The type setting and book layout are as bland as a Word document you might write for a report at work. The complete story is here, but the presentation leaves much to be desired.
