Superb Classic Revived By Dr. Ehssan Sakhaee This is truly a magnificent account of the story of the life of Cyrus The Great, The founder of the Persian Empire, as narrated by two greek historians: Herodotus (philosopher & scholar) and Xenophenon (a great general) and brought to life again in Jacob Abbott's great masterpeice, with extensive commentary. A must read for all lovers of history.

20 of 22 people found the following review helpful. a fantastic book about a great king By ghalekhany The Iranians regarded him as "The Father", Babylonian as "The Liberator", Hellenes as 'Law-Giver' and the Jews as 'The Anointed of the Lord'.Cyrus The Great. The very emperor who proclaimed at the pinnacle of power 2500 years ago that "... he would not reign over the people if they did not wish it." And [he] promised not to force any person to change his religion and faith and guaranteed freedom for all. The Charter of Cyrus The Great is one of the most important documents that should be studied in the history of human rights"We promise to preserve forever the traditions of humanism and goodwill, with which you founded the Persian Empire: traditions which made our people to be the carrier of message transmitted everywhere, professing fraternity and truth."The book has 12 chapters ,first chapter is very interesting and the author writes about Xenophon and Herodotus and explains about their origins and reliability of information given by Herodotus, second and third chapters are about the birth of Cyrus the Great and his visit to Media as a young prince when his grandfather Astyages was king of Media(main source of information ,Herodotus).Chapter 4-8 describes his accession to the throne and conquest of Lydia, Babylon and liberation of Jews. Chapter 10 is about Susian captive Panthea and she was treated with dignity and respect and was reunited with her Assyrian husband Arbadates(an Assyrian general), and finally chapter 12 is about the death of the legend (most information taken from Herodotus)This is a very good book and very easy to read.

For one of the great figures of history, this book is very thin - less than 100 pages, and says flat out that it is not a real history, but simply a retelling of Herodotus and Xenophon's accounts - ancient histories more known for their exaggerated tales than real history. with no leavening of modern historians and scholars' learning. surely someone in the last 2000 years has something to add to these accounts. The book has no table of contents, no introduction, no footnotes, no index, no biography of the author,no bibliography- none of the hallmarks of a normal history book, and none of the aids that help it to be used as a reference. the typesetting is crowded and hard to read, and it is lacking in sufficient maps or other illustrations to help the reader understand the context of the text. There also is little to no formatting or use of whitespace. There also is no copyright or library of congress notation. The book appears to be a bootleg. Amazon's book quality has declined - this is the second time i got a bootleg version of the a real book from amazon when i thought i'd get the real book . This version is not worth it.

I was expecting an ordinary coloring book with tractors and farm stuff for my kid to color but instead it's a book that my son illustrates from scratch and he can write his name on the cover after he's done. Genius! Pure genius... The story is well written too. He's just starting to learn to read so I think he will actually enjoy reading this even more since he illustrated it. This is like a dr. Sues book minus the pictures. Your child is the illustrator. I don't think there is a better way to decribe this book.

Judith: A Play in Three Acts, by Arnold Bennett

About the Author Enoch Arnold Bennett, the son of a solicitor, was born in Hanley, Staffordshire in 1867. He was educated locally and at London University, before working initially as a solicitor's clerk, but soon turned to writing popular serial fiction and editing a women's magazine. After the publication of his first novel, 'A Man from the North' in 1898 he became a professional writer and some of his best and most enduring and acclaimed work, including 'Anna of the Five Towns', 'The Old Wives' Tale', 'Clayhanger', 'The Card' and 'Hilda Lessways' followed over the next twelve years. Soon after the outbreak of the First World War, Bennett was invited to join the War Propaganda Bureau, concerned with finding ways of best promoting Britain's interests. He was in good company, as others who contributed to this effort included Conan Doyle, John Masefield, G. K. Chesterton, Sir Henry Newbolt, John Galsworthy, Thomas Hardy, Rudyard Kipling, Gilbert Parker, G. M. Trevelyan and H. G. Wells. Bernard Shaw knew nothing of the Bureau, but attacked what he believed to be jingoistic articles and poems being produced by British writers. Bennett was the one chosen to defend their actions. He served on a War Memorial Committee at the invitation of the then Minister of Information, Lord Beaverbrook, and was also appointed director of British propaganda in France. His spells in Paris added to his reputation as a man of cosmopolitan and discerning tastes. After the War he inevitably returned to writing novels and also became a director of the 'New Statesman'. Bennett's great reputation is built upon the success of his novels and short stories set in the Potteries, an area of north Staffordshire that he recreated as the 'Five Towns'. 'Anna of the Five Towns' and 'The Old Wives' Tale' show the influence of Flaubert, Maupassant and Balzac as Bennett describes provincial life in great detail. Arnold Bennett is an important link between the English novel and European realism. He wrote several plays and lighter works such as 'The Grand Babylon Hotel' and 'The Card'. Arnold Bennett died in 1931.

THE LAND OF PROMISE is a novelized version of Somerset Maugham's play. Set in Canada, it concerns the harsh life of newly-arrived immigrants trying to make their way on the western prairies. She was dimly aware that it had its origin in something deeper than mere physical comfort; but for the moment, in that state between sleeping and wakening, which still held her, it was enough to find that body and mind seemed rested. Youth was reasserting itself. And it was only a short time ago that she had felt that never, never, could she by any possible chance feel young again. When one is young, one resents the reaction after any strain not purely physical as if it were a premature symptom of old age. A ray of brilliant stmshine, which found its way through a gap in the drawn curtains, showed that it was long past the usual hour for rising. She smiled whimsically and closed her eyes once more. She remembered now that she was not in her own little room in the other wing of the house. The curtains proved that.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Real people with real situations and real choices to make... By Lola Brown A short play written in 1913 about the emigration of some English people to the prairies of Canada. A gentlewoman (lady's companion) has lost her employer and is not remembered in the will. Thus she is forced to go and live with her brother who has begun to farm in Manitoba. No lifestyle, short of perhaps going to the moon, could be more different for them. Coming from the aristocratic homes and manners of the British "gentleman" class, they must now mingle with the workers and farmers who are literally building a new country. Maugham, as usual, skillfully draws us in to feel the emotions of the main characters as they struggle to adapt and to make very difficult choices in life.According to the website "Theatre Research In Canada", the play was very popular in England and the U.S., but the Canadians were indignant about it. Maugham presented them as being rough and uncouth (similar to the reputation Australians have) and according to one source, Maugham was making fun of the title "Land of Promise" that was used on posters from the Canadian Pacific Railway to encourage people to emigrate there. Maugham traveled to Canada in December 1912 to do research for his play.Without giving too much away, it is a very interesting tale about difficult situations in life and how people face up to them. It also shows the "reward" for making the effort to be mature and accept the good and the bad in life. There is always going to be some disappointment in life: how will you handle yours? Today we are subtly (and not so subtly) encouraged to just give up: to stop/to quit/to whine. People in other times were not like that. The ending is suspenseful and somewhat surprising.

Includes: 15 Colored Illustrations and Biography Two Years Before the Mast is a memoir by the American author Richard Henry Dana, Jr., published in 1840, having been written after a two-year sea voyage starting in 1834. A film adaptation under the same name was released in 1946. While an undergraduate at Harvard College, Dana had an attack of the measles which affected his vision. Thinking it might help his sight, Dana left Harvard to enlist as a common sailor on a voyage around Cape Horn on the brig Pilgrim. He returned to Massachusetts two years later aboard the Alert (which left California sooner than the Pilgrim). He kept a diary throughout the voyage, and, after returning, he wrote a recognized American classic, Two Years Before the Mast, published in 1840.

Yes, it documents the wonderful, adventurous time of the clipper ship. But that's not why you should read it.Richard Henry Dana must have been a most extraordinary man. While attending Harvard as a young man, his eyesight became weak and his health declined. He decided that the austere prescription of salt air and plain hard work would be the cure. Not many would give up comfort and privilege, but for two years, Dana served as a common sailor, given no special treatment as the gentleman he was, and lived in the forecastle of the Alert, eating the mess of salt beef and common hardtack, risking his life and serving under a captain crueler than most.Dana was able to write in such a way as to re-create the life on board a sailing ship, down to the smallest details and that's what makes this book so real and touching. You can feel the cold of Tierra del Fuego, taste the salt beef, and feel the wind and damp. What's more amazing is that Dana's carefully-kept journal was lost along with his other mementos of his voyage when he landed back on shore in Boston, due to some tragic carelessness of someone he entrusted with his chest of belongings. Yet he was able to recreate his voyage in loving detail and in some very excellent writing.Dana's later life as a lawyer was far from happy, though he made some critical contributions to maritime law. He died a poor and disappointed man, but left us the richer with his book. I just re-read it again for the tenth time, and it is fresher than ever. Read it along side of Moby Dick. It's American literature and American history and culture at its very best.

Sellers I know many people cringe at the thought of reading a narrative that seems to greatly resemble Moby Dick, but I tell you this better than Moby Dick and easy makes it into my top ten books I have ever read! Occassionally the text bogs down in obscure sailing terms, but that is an exception and not a rule, otherwise, it is sheer poetry and lights the fire of wonder of exploration, and makes a sea voyage from almost 200 years ago spring to life. I give you my favorite short little passage, which explains it so much better."So quiet too, was the sea, and so steady the breeze, that if the sails had been sculptured marble they could not have been more motionless. Not a ripple upon the surface of the canvas; not even a quivering of the extreme edges of the sail, so perfectly were they distended by the breeze. I was so lost in the sight that I forgot the presence of the man who came out with me, until he said, 'How quietly they do their work!'"Dana so perfectly described sea life you will be a part of the crew, you will feel his fear, his wonder, his joy and his awe.You will not regret reading this, philosophy disguised as a travelogue, a must-read!

This young man takes passage to sail around the horn to go to California in it's days of infancy as a traders destination.I found the personal stories , the information of the early days at the ports of call and the historical description to be exciting and deep in it's descriptive painting of a life long gone but important to the future of the state.I recommend this book.

Having pictures also makes the directions easier to follow.I skimmed through it, read some of the projects, then deleted it.Sorry! Two thumbs down.

Strange and disturbing page turner By J Cook To the Waters Prevailed is a strange and disturbing tale that drew me in and kept me wanting to read more. The author's descriptions were so real that at times I felt like I was in the Mississippi backcountry. The brothers struggles were real and raw, and will haunt you until the very end.

Anne Bronte (1820-1849) was an English novelist and poet who didn’t live long enough to give the world all she could have, but she did write Agnes Grey, which is now generally considered a classic in English and Western literature. Of all the sisters’ works, it is Emily’s Wuthering Heights that has aged the best over time, continuing to retain its place as a classic of English literature. Anne’s Agnes Grey was written as a Volume III to be packaged with Wuthering Heights and was finished within a year of Emily’s novel. Anne is somewhat overshadowed today by her more famous sisters, Charlotte, who wrote Jane Eyre; and Emily with Wuthering Heights. But Anne was a great writer in her own right, and she wrote in a sharper, more realistic style than her two sisters, who focused on romantic prose.

29 of 30 people found the following review helpful. criticising Victorian moral By Mei Anne Brontë (1820-1849) has published two books: 'Agnes Grey' (1847) and 'The Tenant of Wildfell Hall' (1848). In this book a young woman, Helen Graham, and her young son arrive in a small village and rent Wildfell Hall. She works as a artist to support herself and her child. The villagers try to find out who she is and what her background is. Helen does not tell a lot about herself and the villagers start gossiping about her. It turns out that Helen has fled from her alcoholic and abusive husband. At the time this book was written, it was not only considered morally wrong for a wife to leave her husband, but it was even against the law. According to some this book was (one of) the first feminist novel(s). Themes in this book are: alcoholism, gender relations, Victorian moral and the (lack of) rights of women. The alcoholic husband is believed to be based on Anne Brontë's brother Branwell. This Kindle edition has 6421 'locations', which is compareable to over 350 pages in print in paperback.

Deserves to be as well known and widely read as Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre By Ash Ryan Apparently, the main reason Anne Brontë's masterpiece is not as well known as her sisters' is that Charlotte suppressed any new editions after her death, as the novel was deemed extremely shocking for its time. This is very unfortunate, as The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is much better than Anne's previous book, Agnes Grey, better even than Emily's Wuthering Heights, and nearly as good as Charlotte's Jane Eyre. Like Jane Eyre, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall examines the roles of reason and passion in life and concludes that both are necessary to achieve happiness. More specifically, Wildfell Hall is about how to judge other people's characters, particularly in matters of love. These themes are brilliantly dramatized through a story about a woman who makes a youthful, but profound, error in whom she chooses to marry, and as her husband's vicious nature becomes increasingly clear, struggles to leave him---and how she herself is unfairly judged by her new neighbors when she manages to do so. (While I'm sure Anne didn't intend it this way, given her Christian piety, the novel could be read as a good argument for liberal divorce laws and the wisdom of cohabitation before marriage.)Many people sharply contrast the romanticism of Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre with the realism of Wildfell Hall, but this is a mistake---and, despite its more frank depictions of some of the social problems of its time (including alcoholism and domestic abuse), Anne rejected this dichotomy in the novel itself:"'But romantic notions will not do: I want her to have true notions.'"'Very right: but in my judgment, what the world stigmatises as romantic, is often more nearly allied to the truth than is commonly supposed; for, if the generous ideas of youth are too often over-clouded by the sordid views of after-life, that scarcely proves them to be false.'"This is related to the broader theme about the dichotomy of reason and passion, which she also rejects, so that analysis more or less misses the whole point of the novel.Like Jane Eyre (and to a lesser extent Wuthering Heights), The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is an intellectual and emotional tour de force, and one of the greatest classics in all of world literature. It's a real tragedy that Anne died even younger than her sisters before she could write anything else. Four and a half stars.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Must add my thumbs UP for this book!! By Voves I just finished Anne Brontë's 2nd novel and I found it an absolute page turner...Anne's reputation as the lesser Brontë sister seems very unfounded and I guess Charlotte started that ball rolling back in the day with "the gentle Anne" stuff and saying this novel was a "mistake" , hardly!I feel like an unknown Brontë novel just fell out of a cupboard at the Parsonage , yet it's been in plain sight all along !Anne was a real Brontë and let me just say, "gentle Anne" stayed in an outside job years and years longer that any other Brontë off spring ever could. Anne was tough. There was grit in that gentleness, that's the best kind .Like all Brontës, Anne's dialogue is so modern and fast moving! I'm going to have to read it again to see what I missed in my haste! It's not Jane Eyre...but it can stand next to JE in pride...and how many novels can say that? Many miss a good read passing it by and it's a shame. Reading this excellent book also now makes, to me, Anne's passing at 29 an even keener tragedy. One becomes more aware of world's untimely loss; not just of more Anne Brontë books, but of Anne BrontëAnne Brontë wanted to make a mark before leaving this world. Well Anne, you did

Review "... a very good book. The building of a boat is the intriguing setting for the rich man, the drunk hunk, the sexy secretary, the grumpy vet, the sly coed, the goddess, and the wife. A serious house of cards that makes you hold your breath. The politics, business, and relationships are all too real and human. An excellent conclusion with an unlikely victor and skilled omission of the obvious. This writing is so rich that it's tempting to read aloud. The story has the unique quality [which] recommends it to both men and women." - bayberry

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Quite a boat ride! By bayberry I chose to buy this book because there has been boat building in the family, and I liked the cover, if not the title. This superficial decision rewarded me with a very good book. You don’t have to be a boat person to enjoy this one. The building of a boat is the intriguing setting for the rich man, the drunk hunk, the sexy secretary, the grumpy vet, the sly coed, the goddess, and the wife to slowly establish a serious house of cards that makes you hold your breath. These characters are not especially likable but you certainly get to know them and can’t help but get involved with their layered entanglements. The politics, business, and relationships are all too real and all too human. The conclusion is excellent, with an unlikely victor and skilled omission of the obvious. There are word and comma errors here but the true detraction is the excess psychology. Every thought and deed is over analyzed and so the reader never gets to do any. The writing is smart and deep, (I used kindle highlighting many times for gem phrasing and truisms), but it’s just too wordy. I appreciate a long, meaty sentence but these were ridiculous. In the author’s own words, “you could go on and on forever, or until you ended up forgetting whatever the hell it was you were talking about in the first place.” (loc 2868) The first half of the book, especially, felt bogged down in philosophical ramblings. But if you can wade through, it is worth it.UPDATE: I rarely enjoy a reread, but I truly enjoyed this one, even though I knew what was going to “happen”. The author has done a fine revision on this book and successfully improved it's readability without compromising characters or drama. This writing is so rich that it's tempting to read aloud. The story has the unique quality that it would appeal to varied readers and I find I recommend it to both men and women. I also want to note that I do not know or have affiliation with this author.

How is this book unique?

Formatted for E-Readers, Unabridged & Original version. You will find it much more comfortable to read on your device/app. Easy on your eyes. Includes: 15 Colored Illustrations and Biography Greece, for many ages they have been a source of delight to young people and old, to the ignorant and the learned, to all who love to hear about and contemplate things mysterious, beautiful, and grand. They have become so incorporated into our language and thought, and so interwoven with our literature, that we could not do away with them now if we would. They are a portion of our heritage from the distant past, and they form perhaps as important a part of our intellectual life as they did of that of the people among whom they originated. That many of these tales should be read by children at an early age no intelligent person will deny. Sufficient reason for this is to be found in the real pleasure that every child derives from their perusal: and in the preparation of this volume no other reason has been considered.

Review

It will be observed that while each of the stories in this volume is wholly independent of the others and may be read without any knowledge of those which precede it, there is nevertheless a certain continuity from the first to the last, giving to the collection a completeness like that of a single narrative. In order that the children of our own country and time may be the better able to read these stories in the light in which they were narrated long ago, I have told them in simple language, keeping the supernatural element as far as possible in the background, and nowhere referring to Jupiter and his mighty company as gods. I have hoped thus to free the narrative still more from everything that might detract from its interest simply as a story.

About the Author James Baldwin (1924-1987) burst on the literary scene in 1953 with his novel Go Tell It on the Mountain, which received excellent reviews and immediately was recognized as establishing a profound new voice in American letters. His acclaimed collection of essays, Notes of a Native Son, was published in 1955. A second collection of essays, Nobody Knows My Name, was published in 1961 between his novels Giovanni's Room (1956) and Another Country (1961).

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. romans? By tony This book was able to quench my thirst for Greek myhtology, in fact tbe stories are told wonderfully. However, the characters are described in their Roman form. This might confuse young children who are looking for Greek stories. other than that though, fantastic.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Well told tales: Great intro to classical myths, but... By Amazon Customer This is written as children's book, but makes a great light page turner for adults. Nice short little chapters make it great for commuters. The "but" is that for some reason the author tells the Greek Stories with the Roman characters of the gods -Jupiter instead of Zeus, Diana instead of Artemis, etc. This does not undermine the enjoyment of the stories, which are really delightfully simple and fun, rather the accuracy.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Myths that Mystifies the Greek System By Amazon Customer The stories are enchanting and entertaining. The imaginary thrust of the story writers was impeccable. However, the envy, jealousy, wandering, immaturity, anger and fickleness that fills the "Mighty Ones" was pronounced. Forgiveness is almost unheard of, and love is partly mercenary based. There are clear take away points for reality, but overall this book lies in fantasy. Good read.

Rose Tramore, the quietly persistent young woman at the center of Henry James' novella The Chaperon, is every bit as memorable a literary creation as James' Daisy Miller, though she is that character's opposite in many ways. In the aftermath of her mother's bitter divorce, Rose helps her shattered family pick up the pieces and carry on.

Sister Carrie, by Theodore Dreiser

Amazon.com Review Sister Carrie, Theodore Dreiser's revolutionary first novel, was published in 1900--sort of. The story of Carrie Meeber, an 18-year-old country girl who moves to Chicago and becomes a kept woman, was strong stuff at the turn of the century, and what Dreiser's wary publisher released was a highly expurgated version. Times change, and we now have a restored "author's cut" of Sister Carrie that shows how truly ahead of his time Dreiser was. First and foremost, he has written an astute, nonmoralizing account of a woman and her limited options in late-19th-century America. That's impressive in and of itself, but Dreiser doesn't stop there. Digging deeply into the psychological underpinnings of his characters, he gives us people who are often strangers to themselves, drifting numbly until fate pushes them on a path they can later neither defend nor even remember choosing.

Dreiser's story unfolds in the measured cadences of an earlier era. This sometimes works brilliantly as we follow the choices, small and large, that lead some characters to doom and others to glory. On the other hand, the middle chapters--of which there are many--do drag somewhat, even when one appreciates Dreiser's intentions. If you can make it through the sagging midsection, however, you'll be rewarded by Sister Carrie's last 150 pages, which depict the harrowing downward spiral of one of the book's central characters. Here Dreiser portrays with brutal power how the wrong decision--or lack of decision--can lay waste to a life. --Rebecca Gleason

Review `Dreiser`s early novel is probably his greatest, and one of the greatest American novels`l Irish Times

From the Publisher Theodore Dreiser had a hardscrabble youth and the years of newspaper work behind him when he began his first novel, Sister Carrie, the story of a beautiful Midwestern girl who makes it big in New York City. Published by Doubleday in 1900, it gained a reputation as a shocker, for Dreiser had dared to give the public a heroine whose "cosmopolitan standard of virtue" brings her from Wisconsin, with four dollars in her purse, to a suite at the Waldorf and glittering fame as an actress. With Sister Carrie, the original manuscript of which is in the New York Public Library collections, Dreiser told a tale not "sufficiently delicate" for many of its first readers and critics, but which is now universally recognized as one of the greatest and most influential American novels.

Possibly the greatest novel in American literature By A Customer Somewhere in the depths of time a critic once labeled playwright Eugene O'Neill a genius with no talent. It's a description that could just as easily fit Theodore Dreiser, an uneducated, mercurial man who, while still in his twenties, and with virtually no experience composing fiction, managed to crank out what I consider one of the greatest novels in American literature. Very few authors have ever managed to generate the raw power that Dreiser does over the 500 or so pages of "Sister Carrie." It is amazing how much of the human experience he has put into this book, how well he understands the hopes, fears, and desires--mysterious and contradictory as they often are--that drive ordinary people. The conventional judgment on Dreiser puts him in the naturalistic, social-realist tradition of Zola and Hardy. There is much in this; but I think his real strength lies in depicting character--Carrie, Hurstwood, and Drouet really come alive in these pages. His characters possess a depth and complexity of feeling that one rarely finds in fiction. Dreiser has a melancholy, fatalistic sense that the world may be too vast and impersonal for people to live in it comfortably, and yet his world is vibrantly human as well.I personally find Carrie a more likable heroine (if you could call her that) than many readers have. She is self-absorbed, yes, but also capable of compassion for others, and she is never intentionally cruel. Like all of Dreiser's characters she is somewhere between the angels and the devils. This is by no means a perfect book. Dreiser's rhetorical flourishes can become absolutely ridiculous, and so can his habit of injecting philosophical commentary into the texture of the narrative. But the total effect of "Sister Carrie" is powerful, and more than compensates for any defects in the novel.

Norris, one of America's great naturalist writers, saw in Dreiser's tale about a young woman on the make a reflection of the same bleak vistas he wrote about in "Vandover and the Brute," "The Octopus," and "McTeague." When Dreiser submitted his book for publication, it was Norris who read the book and made a glowing recommendation to the publisher. There were immense problems with "Sister Carrie" from that point forward: the wife of the publisher hated the story and worked hard behind the scenes to prevent its release. With a contract already signed, Dreiser's book did become a reality but the publishing house refused to support it with any marketing. The story languished for years in a paper limbo before finally emerging to great success and acclaim. Thank goodness it did because this may be one of the most powerful books ever written about social climbing and the perils of bad morals. Dreiser went on to publish more novels (American Tragedy, The Financier) before dropping out of the literary scene and converting to communism before his death in 1945."Sister Carrie" doesn't promise much at the beginning. In fact, this is yet another story about a rural person arriving in the big city seeking fame and fortune. In this case, it is Carrie Meeber, a young woman moving to Chicago to live with her sister and her husband while she tries to find work. Carrie quickly discovers big city life is tough; her sister's home life bores her to death, the work she finds in a shoe factory is pure drudgery, and she doesn't have enough money to buy decent clothes because she has to pay her sister four dollars a week for rent. Carrie hates her base co-workers and spends most of her free time watching people pass on the street outside of her sister's apartment. When Carrie loses her job after an illness, it looks like she will have to return home to Columbia City and forget about her dreams in Chicago.Enter George Drouet, a semi-successful salesman with a voracious appetite for the ladies. George finagled Carrie's address when he met her on the train into Chicago, and now the two meet again by chance. The results of this meeting shape the rest of the book. Carrie abandons her sister's lodgings and becomes "kept" by George. It is during this period that Carrie meets George Hurstwood, the wealthy manager of a fancy Chicago tavern and friend of Drouet. Through a series of misunderstandings about the marriage status of Carrie and Hurstwood, and serious lapses in moral judgments, Hurstwood and Carrie move on to bigger and better things in New York City.It is at this point that Norris must have began enthusing, for Dreiser embarks on a harrowing tour through the destruction of a human being's body and soul. Just when you think a person could sink no lower, Dreiser yanks you back to reality and illustrates for you just how bad things can get before the inevitable occurs. When the author contrasts the utter humiliation of one character with the elevation in status of another, the tension becomes too much to bear. This novel is painful to read, but at the same time it is so riveting it is nearly impossible to put it down. We've all seen or known people who suffered the fates revealed in this story, or at least I have, and that makes it even more chillingly realistic. How Dreiser managed to capture the feel of his characters' lives is a mystery, but that is what makes this book great literature; it is timeless in its examination of the inner workings of the human soul."Sister Carrie" is classic literature, but that does not mean there are not problems with the story. Dreiser's prose takes some getting used to before it starts to flow. In fact, this may be the best book I have ever read where the prose is often mediocre. I told one person that the author's style reminded me of an intoxicated welder, and I still believe that to be the case for most of the book. Dreiser has a tendency to jam his sentences together into an unwieldy mix of clauses and commas. After a few hundred pages this hardly seems to matter but it could provide a reason for someone just starting the book to quit reading it. Do not quit, however, because the story ends up being so good that the stylistic problems quickly fade into insignificance.Another difficulty involves the middle portion of the story, when Carrie, Drouet, and Hurstwood vie for position with each other. These chapters appreciably drag while providing no clues about the goldmine that soon follows. Looking at the story as a whole, I understand now why these chapters were necessary but I didn't while I was reading them. Again, do not give up too soon lest you miss out on the extraordinary buildup to the soul shattering conclusion.Ultimately, the messages conveyed by Dreiser outweigh the dual problems of prose and a few plodding chapters. The scandalous behavior the author wrote about angered many during his time because people believed that divorce, infidelity, loose morals, and social positioning were things better talked about privately than brought out in the open. The fact that Dreiser wrote such things without delivering a blistering rebuke about such behaviors also stunned society. Perhaps it is not too far off to say that Theodore Dreiser was the Jerry Springer of his generation, merely revealing things that everyone knew happened behind closed doors. Whatever the case may be, "Sister Carrie" is sheer brilliance. I was so fired up after reading this book that I went right out and got "American Tragedy." I now understand why Frank Norris went into paroxysms of delight about Dreiser's book.

33 of 33 people found the following review helpful. fascinatingly beautiful By A Customer Living an average middle-class life, I have always wondered how the very rich and the very poor get where they are. Sister Carrie is a beautifully written and fascinating tale of how one climbs and descends the social ladder of life. I am aware that some readers have criticized this book stating that Dreiser did not develop the characters very well and that Carrie was not very likeable. Well, it is my thought that Dreiser never intended for us to become solely wrapped within the characters. He meant for us to become enveloped in the circumstance. The two main characters, Carrie and Hurstwood, are truly victims of circumstance - Carrie's never-ending unhappiness and Hurstwood's downward spiral. As we go through life, there are so many events and choices that will guide our lives to what they are. When one stops and thinks about this, it is really quite fascinating. I believe Dreiser r was aware of this aspect of life and he wanted to write a novel that would effect the lives of everyone who reads it. I read the entire book in 3 days. I simply could not put it down. I recommend Sister Carrie to everyone. It will leave you thinking and thinking and thinking.
