It is customary in many families and Churches to celebrate the season called Advent every December. This is a time of waiting, of expecting, of anticipation, and of preparation as we get ready for the big day! “30 Days of Advent Colouring Journal” not only offers a unique way to celebrate Advent with your family, it also incorporates another treasured past-time among various denominations and family groups: The Jesse Tree. The Jesse Tree introduces . . . the lives of various people who are featured in Jesus' earthly family tree. Images to be coloured on each day are taken from The Jesse Tree and in some way represent the person or subject being covered on that day. However, we aren't just reading and merely colouring our way through the Christmas season! Each day bears Scripture, thoughts, and a question to ponder. Opposite each colouring page, space is reserved for devotional thoughts as they come to you or a member of your family as you progress through the Christmas season. May this Advent colouring journal bless you and yours this Christmas!

Side by Side Study of Advent and The Jesse Tree By Virginia Finnie The 30 Days of Advent Colouring Journal is an excellent resource for families, home-schoolers, and church groups. This comprehensive study guide offers daily scripture references and teaching leading to the birth of Jesus Christ. Additionally, it offers daily scripture references and teaching on the Jesse Tree. The Jesse Tree scripturally outlines the lineage of Jesus Christ providing a biblical foundation of Jesus the Messiah. Space for journaling and a picture to color is included daily, as well.Author, Marilyn Dawson suggests in the introduction to have this advent colouring journal be a shared family experience each Christmas season elevating it to a family tradition. Saving the completed journal year after year giving the family the opportunity to revisit previous years and see the changes and growth of the family members will become a cherished time. What a wonderful way to keep the focus of Christmas on Jesus Christ!

Excerpt from Pompeii: Its Life and ArtFor twenty-five years Professor Mau has devoted himself to the study of Pompeii, spending his summers among the ruins and his winters in Rome, working up the new material. He holds a unique place among the scholars who have given attention to Pompeian antiquities, and his contributions to the literature of the subject have been numerous in both German and Italian. The present volume, however, is not a translation of one previously issued, but a new work first published in English, the liberality of the publishers having made it possible to secure assistance for the preparation of certain restorations and other drawings which Professor Mau desired to have made as illustrating his interpretation of the ruins. In one respect there is an essential difference between the remains of Pompeii and those of the large and famous cities of antiquity, as Rome or Athens, which have associated with them the familiar names of historical characters. Mars' Hill is clothed with human interest, if for no other reason, because of its relation to the work of the Apostle Paul; while the Roman Forum and the Palatine, barren as they seem to-day, teem with life as there rise before the mind's eye the scenes presented in the pages of classical writers. But the Campanian city played an unimportant part in contemporary history; the name of not a single great Pompeian is recorded. The ruins, deprived of the interest arising from historical associations, must be interpreted with little help from literary sources, and repeopled with aggregate rather than individual life.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An Extraordinary Work By John G. Sharp Pompeii:its life and art, is an important contribution to the history of Pompeii and Herculaneum. August Mau 1840 -1909 was a distinguished German scholar who specialized in art history and classical philology, he edited the Corpus of Latin Inscriptions, Volume IV Supplement and this work on the art and architecture of the city is still a standard. Mau was the first to characterize Pompeian wall painting into four styles, a scheme still in use today and to seriously champion Roman art especially that in Pompeii as comparable to Greece. Mau knew these two ancient cities intimately, led excavations of the sites each summer for many years and in this unique volume provides readers numerous translations of Latin and Greek inscriptions and graffiti. Many of these writings are no longer legible, especially the graffiti and dipinti which have deteriorated or were destroyed due to effects of time, WWII and the constant challenge of mass tourism and preservation.Mau was a fine writer, who clearly loved his subject and the translation from the German of Pompeji in Leben und Kunst by Francis W. Kelsey is smooth. The Kindle digitization has its problems, however for $2.00, Pompeii:its life and art, is a wonderful bargain!

He ministered at the East Bank Church in Harwick and later was professor of apologetics and theology at the United Free Church College in Glasgow. A highly respected evangelical lecturer both in Scotland and the United States, Orr was a valiant defender of historic orthodoxy in the heyday of liberal Protestantism, as seen in his contributions to The Fundamentals (1909-1915) as well as his chief apologetic work, The Christian View of God and the World.

One woman's quest for truth reveals a dark family secret long buried in Prague's Nazi past. Every family holds to secrets, but some are far darker, reach deeper, and touch a rawer nerve than others. Vanesa Neuman is the daughter of Holocaust survivors, and her childhood in the cramped intimacy of south Tel Aviv is shadowed by her parents' unspoken wartime experiences. The past for her was a closed book... until her father passes away and that book falls literally open Vanesa must now unravel the mystery of the diary she has received-and the strange symbol within-at all costs.Set against the backdrop of the Nazi occupation and the Jewish Museum of Prague - Adolf Eichmann's"Museum of an Extinct Race" - Galerie is fast-paced historical fiction in the tradition of Tatiana De Rosnay's Sarah's Key.From Jerusalem's Yad V'Shem Holocaust research center, to the backstreets of Prague, and into the former "paradise ghetto" of Theresienstadt, Vanesa's journey of understanding will reveal a darker family past than she ever imagined - a secret kept alive for over half a century.

26 of 26 people found the following review helpful. A gripping read By BookWormNZ Galerie is a gripping read, rich with intrigue from beginning to end. As much a thriller as a “Holocaust novel”, while also filled with fact-based information. I was immediately drawn into the story, and found myself wanting to speed through the pages to see what would unfold next. The main character, Vanesa, the Israeli-born daughter of two Holocaust survivors, and now an historian, is obsessed with uncovering the story behind her father and paternal grandfather’s wartime experiences. The book moves back and forth through time: wartime, 1970s and 80s, and “present day” 1990s. Likewise, locations change: Prague, Therezinstadt, Israel, USA and other smaller locations. The time shifts allow intrigue and understanding, creating a compelling build-up to the climax. The story that unfolds is hinted at throughout the book, but it was only on my second reading that I recognized the breadcrumbs for what they were. With so many novels set around WWII, saying something new is quite a feat. Yet, in this novel, Greenberg pulls it off. Yes, there are shades of the DaVinci Code (strange symbols imbued with unclear meaning, shady and mysterious characters) and Sarah’s Key (modern exploration of a very personal Holocaust experience that represents a far larger experience; shifting between different times and places), but still Galerie hits an original note. And, unlike many such novels, it made me think. My recommendation: read all the way to the end of the book, including the historical notes provided after the end of the novel itself.I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys historical fiction or historical thrillers in general, and specifically anyone who has an interest in Holocaust fiction.

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Holocaust suspense thriller By Laurence Steven Greenberg's second novel, Galerie, is a work of Holocaust historical fiction. It is a very well researched, action-packed page-turner. Greenberg is the son-in-law of a third cousin of mine. I met him once, in Tel Aviv, in 2010. While I do not view this as çonflict of interest 'in writing a review (I've panned books by writers with whom I have a much closer relationship), I do feel it ethical to let anyone reading my review to know about this. The story, told by the protagonist's camp counselor/eventual lover/future husband/subsequently divorced ex-husband, starts at a summer camp in Wisconsin in the early 1980s and goes through the early 1990s, moving to Tel Aviv with flashbacks to Prague and the Camps during the Second World War.Vanesa Neuman, the protagonist with a PhD in history, is the daughter of Holocaust survivor Michael Neuman, whose father, Jakob Neuman and uncle Tomas raised her. Upon Michael's death, Vanesa obtains her father's diary which was filled with stories and symbols so 'startling'that Vanesa was determined to do the necessary research at both Yad Vashem in Israel and the Jewish Museum of Prague to discover, if possible, what her parents, grand father and uncle did to survive as they never revealed these horrors to Vanesa. The untold story that Vanesa starts to discover is sufficient to cause unsuccessful murder attempts on her life as well as the murders of others involved with her attempt to find out the true story of her parents, grandfather and uncle's survival during the War.To what extent did those who survived but were not 'on the run' or in hiding collaborate with the Nazis? Were their acts despicable? How does one view those acts of survival? How does the survivor live the post-war future? These are the fundamental questions that Greenberg poses in a well written, easy to read, appealing manner. I don't want to go into any more detail, here, because it would diminish that intruiging, page-turning aspect away from this book. This is a piece of fiction that will definitely hold your interest and I recommend it without any qualifications!

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. I thought I was going to hate it. We open with a female protagonist in ... By James I was given a copy of this book as part of a Novel Publicity tour. I’ll be honest, when I began to read the first chapter of this book, I thought I was going to hate it. We open with a female protagonist in the middle of an attack by two men on the streets of Prague. I thought, ‘great, once again we resort to rape as a plot device’. But it turned out I jumped to conclusions. While the attack was disturbing in its own way, it wasn’t rape, and it did fit into the plot. So don’t let that first chapter turn you off from this book. The book opens in Prague, 1991, and flashes back to the 1980’s and 1940’s through flashbacks and memories. What I found interesting is that the narrator is the unnamed once-husband of the protagonist, Vanesa Neuman. He’s not present throughout most of the story, yet he’s the one telling the tale. Makes one wonder how reliable he is. As the mystery Vanesa follows takes her deeper into danger, and she becomes more obsessed with her search, the husband’s feelings of abandonment and rejection color the tale while still attempting to tell the full story with every detail. When Vanesa’s father passes away, she inherits a journal he wrote when he was a boy in Prague. In it, he tells tales of people from all different walks of life, from all over the world. All the characters are Jewish, but they are so different from one another that Vanesa has to wonder where he got the ideas from. Did he meet all those people? He’d also drawn a strange symbol on the pages, and it intrigues Vanesa even more.So she goes to Prague, with the help of an uncle who still has ties to Czechoslovakia, to find answers. All the pieces of the puzzle start coming together through flashbacks to the Nazi occupation of Prague, the stories written by Vanesa’s father, and the narrator’s own observations of Vanesa and her quest. Armed with nothing but her brains and unwavering resolve bordering on obsession, Vanesa follows the clues to one horrifying, inevitable conclusion. But will she survive to tell the tale?Mr. Greenburg did a really good job of recreating each time period and location. I had a hard time putting this book down, wanting to know what would happen to Vanesa and what the mystery was. I didn’t figure it out until very close to the reveal, which is truly terrifying.

This stylish wide brimmed floppy hat is super quick to make because the yarn is used double, and it is also very easy to make because single crochet stitch is used throughout. The thickness of the yarn and the texture of the stitch work together to give you a nice warm hat that looks structured, but one which can also be tucked away when not being worn without losing its shape.

The pattern is 'one size fits most' from tweens to adults.

You will only need two 4 oz skeins (100 g balls) of light worsted (double knitting/8 ply) yarn in the main color and an oddment of yarn in a contrast color (optional) for the braided band around the hat. My patterns are written in plain English which makes them easy to follow whether you are a newbie crocheter or you have many years of experience.

A young fisherman-turned-groom seeks to do right by his half sister after learning that he is the true Marquis of Lossie. This book is in its original form. The dialect can be a little hard to sift through ("I canna weel du that, sir; she canna be muckle waur," said the youth.) MacDonald can be a bit preachy. A quote from this book: ''You are like all the rest of the Scotch I ever knew...the Scotch are always preaching! I believe it is in their blood." The book does not move as fast as modern readers are used to, but is well worth reading. There is intrigue, humor, scandal and redemption. Enjoy!

Collins Without fear of exaggeration, this is the most convicting novel I have ever read. The plot - while page turning - is not really the point. Set in the mid 19th century and taking place in London and Scotland, this sequel to is a relatively straightforward tale of love triangles, unsuitable suitors, wealthy, spoiled heiresses, a little intrigue and attempted murder, and herring fishing. (OK, so the latter does not regularly turn up in romantic fiction. Give it a chance: it fully belongs here!)But the real point of this story is the preaching. Malcolm's friend and mentor Alexander Graham makes regular appearances, and while one may rightly claim that his chapters do not precisely assist in the main thrust of the plot, they - along with Malcom's own frequent philosophic meditations - are nevertheless the raison d'etre of the book.Through these sermons and ruminations, I found myself challenged to be an 'engineer' of religion, and not a mere philosopher. I found myself convicted of an ongoing tendency to separate religion and life into independent, rarely communicating compartments - as if separated religion is anything at all. And I found my concept of salvation being stretched far beyond the rather binary boundaries of my childhood into something more resembling the journey suggested by the parable of the narrow gate and straight road.Rather than continue this review in my own words, I will simply quote a few of the passages I highlighted."Obedience is the key to every door. I am perplexed at the stupidity of the ordinary religious being. In the most practical of all matters, he will talk, and speculate, and try to feel, but he will not set himself to do." (Page 319)"Whoever can think of religion as an addition to life, however glorious -- a starry crown, say, set upon the head of humanity, is not yet least in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever thinks of life as something that could be without religion, is in deathly ignorance of both. Life and religion are one, or neither is anything..."(Page 386)(A conversation between Clementina and Florimel)"For my part, I would give all I have to know there was a God worth believing in."..."Of course there is a God. It is very horrible to deny it.""Which is worse -- to deny it, or to deny him? Now, I confess to doubting it -- that is, the fact of a God; but you seem to me to deny God himself, for you admit there is a God -- think it very wicked to deny that, and you you don't take interest enough in him to wish to learn anything about him."(Page 305)(A conversation between Clementina and Malcolm)"Our Lord speaks of many coming up to his door confident of admission, whom he yet sends from him. Faith is obedience, not confidence.""Then I do well to fear.""Yes, my lady, so long as your fear makes you knock the louder.""But if I be in, as you say, how can I go on knocking?""There are a thousand more doors to knock at after you are in, my lady. No one content to stand just inside the gate will be inside it long. But it is one thing to be in, and another to be satisfied that we are in....He who does what his Lord tells him, is in the kingdom, if every feeling of heart and brain told him he was out. And his Lord will see that he knows it one day. But I do not think, my lady, one can ever be quite sure, until the king himself has come in to sup with him, and has let him know that he is altogether one with him."(Page 410)A final note:This book was published in 1891 and a large portion of the action takes place in the author's native Scotland. There is a fair bit of dialog in Scotch, which appears to the modern eye as misspelled, contracted English with a half-dozen bizarre words thrown in for good measure. I did not find my occasional incomprehension of one or two phrases or even an entire paragraph to be especially annoying or to detract terribly from the story. And the author takes pity on us: many of the characters are English, Malcolm himself takes care to speak English in their presence, and provides translations when they are truly necessary. But, if this sort of thing is really annoying to you, or if you are simply intimidated by a 400+ page historical novel with preaching, then by all means read the abridgment, "The Marquis' Secret." I personally read this book's prequel in the abridged form ("The Fisherman's Lady") and was still prompted to immediately find the sequel in any form. However, I intend to go back and re-read "Malcolm" in the author's original in the immediate future!PS: eBook Lovers - This book is available as a free download from Project Gutenberg!

Plagued by insomnia, the narrator walks the city looking for something, for someone to bring him peace. Then he finds Lillian, the puzzling, seductive stranger -- or does she find him? They are instantly drawn to each other in intimate and unexpected ways: each of them finding what they need, at least for awhile. But before they get too comfortable, Lillian alters their unspoken rules: first with an offer, then with a threat. What starts as a quiet, intimate testing of boundaries, becomes a sprawling journey from a snowbound city, across the Atlantic Ocean, to sun-bleached routes through Greece. All the while retaining the intimacy of a one-room apartment. Our narrator changes his life in unimaginable ways but still needs more. He needs answers, he needs intimacy, he needs to feel human, but Lillian is an unhelpful teacher, keeping both her past and their future closely guarded secrets. Leech is an unsettling, poetic, relationship tale riding a thin line of the supernatural. How much can you give and how much can you take before it’s too much?

The writing is elegant and descriptive, flowing from one perfect description to the next. Here's one of my favorites: "The sun is nearly gone now, hurling golden light into the sky as it lashes out in its last tantrum of the day, that last spirited fit before bedtime." There is such beautiful imagery throughout the book that it's more like reading a painting by a great master. The scenes and events come alive in such a vivid way.The main character is someone who I think we all can relate to. He ultimately wants the basic human needs; companionship, love, sex, food, sleep. The search for those things is an age old tale and and Mr. Neumann has brought a whole new twist to it.The story is told in first person, which was a wonderful choice, and really lets us see the struggles and thought process in a way that no other voice could have done justice to.The supporting characters are also very well written and have their place in the story. There's the secondary character whom I couldn't decide if I liked or hated. Sometimes it was one, sometimes it was the other. Of course, we're hearing about her through the eyes of the main character, so perhaps if it were written in her voice it would be completely different. That's the beauty of a first person narrative, you become the story teller. You feel what they want you to feel. You see it all through their perceptions and judgements.I did find about fifteen errors. Things like here instead of her, passed instead of past, missing commas, extra apostrophes, etc. This is one of the most beautiful books I've read in a really long time. I immediately went to see if Mr. Neumann had anything else available for download and sadly this is his only book at this time. I will definitely be following him because I would love to read more from him.

It's not my normal read at all.I have to say that the writing is great, but the storyline is a bit strange. It was like I was reading a book based on a sci-fi show. I'm pretty sure I've seen a show similar. It follows a man and woman who have a very unique relationship. He takes from her and she takes from him and one of them is not altogether human and so everything is not what it seems. The writing it very descriptive and it's like you are actually the character. You seem to feel what they feel, see what they see.Overall, it's a good read....Stormi

So when the author offered me his book to read, I hopped over to check it out on Goodreads. I liked the synopsis, and the title and cover were intriguing. Seemed to fit the bill as new and different. I had my fingers crossed.I’ve got to hand it to the author. I was looking for something outside the norm and he delivered. The creatures, beings, things, not humans, are original. I’ve yet to read anything like them. They are kind of vampires. Are nearly immortal. But they don’t crave blood. They need something else, a different fluid from us. And it’s no quick bite and suck, thank you very much. They must subdue us, then the drinking takes a long time. It’s a slow process. The story is narrated by the main character. You never learn his name. Really don’t need to. You’ll know him inside and out by the end.As for Lillian, she’s not someone you’ll like. I don’t think you’re supposed to. I found her wishy washy, and dangerous. She has lots of secrets and keeps her victim seduced with vague promises. Those promises change to threats when he pushes for more from her. Now he must choose his fate. This story grew on me. I didn’t really like either character, even at the end. But the writing was strong, the plot compelling me to keep going. The author drew me further in, teased me with promises as much as Lillian did. This would be a great movie. Most of the scenes take place in small bedrooms occupied by the main characters. Their mode of travel is strategic. They can disappear quickly that way. The atmosphere is almost gothic. I pictured damp, foggy conditions, adding to the feelings of foreboding. Kind of raises those hairs on the back of your neck.An emotional journey as well as a horrific one, I still think about it. I wonder, if the man did things differently, would he find what he was looking for? Would Lillian? An intense psychological experience. It stays with you.I received this book for my honest review.

I believe that a different designer was used to make this cover, and I have to applaud this person for thinking differently.Isabelle Masters feels empowered. Finally having the strength to leave the lying piece of s**t she called a fiance, Isabelle drives off into the night. No destination in mind, that is until she was pulled over. Then her destination was a police building.Handcuffed and her few possessions taken from her, Isabelle thought that she has sunk to an all time low. Feeling sorry for herself, the last person she did not want see her in this position, shows up to her rescue.Thinking about treating his brother for the night, Gabe is shocked yet pleased to see the object of his affection (more like lust) chained to his brother's desk. Learning why she was in this predicament had his blood boiling in anger, and offers to help Isabelle.Having depended on a man before, Isabelle wants to stand on her own two feet. So accepting any help from Gabe was painful, it was like falling back into old habbits. After he helped her out of this mess, she was planning to thank him and be on her way, but Gabe would hear none of that.Deciding to take her to his home until she knows what direction she wants to take with her life, Isabelle reluctantly agreed (as if she had a choice). After some series of sizzling events, Isabelle runs off in the middle of the night, okay it was not at night, but it just sounded more cool that way, for her own sanity.Months past, and the two meet again when Isabelle accepts and invitation to Eden, an exclusive island resort where everything and anything is possible.Would Isabelle fall back into her old habit and let Gabe run her life? Would Gabe finally learn to let go of his control issues and allow Isabelle the space she needs? Find out in the third installment of the Dare to Love Series, Dare to Surrender, Welcome to Eden. This was by far, my favorite book in the series. I loved that Isabelle actually learned from her past mistakes and moved on. As readers, we know that when the man and woman meets, she is going to fall in love with him and he her, but the characters don't know that and I loved that Isabelle refused to fall back on bad habits.Gabe was a total sweetheart. He wanted to be her knight in shinning armor and when she refused him, he gave her the space she needed. But with his controlling ways, or more accurate, his need for control, did not let him lose track of her. When his patience ran out, he went for his woman. How can anybody resist a man like that. Isabelle was stronger than anybody thought, even herself when she found the power to walk away from Gabe. His sexiness was like a magnet to many, you go girl.Fans of +Carly Phillips would enjoy this book and even if you don't like like her, you are going to love this book. Who does not like a smoking hot romance about a woman getting over her abusive boyfriend and learning to stand on her own two feet? No on can resist this combination, read the book and see if you can resist, I dare you! HAPPY READING!

Faltys Carly Phillips continues to entertain in this third installment in her Dare to Love series. From its likable main couple, to its vividly depicted locations, to the pleasant narative flow that easily brings readers into the seductive world Ms. Phillips has crafted this is a delectable read from start to finish.Isabelle's feeling adrift after dumping her cheating, dominant, and manipulative boyfriend. After going from her parent's home to her ex's home she's never been on her own and isn't sure how to be on her own. With no money, no home, and no phone ending up at the police department is the final straw. Luckily for her a man who runs in the same circles as her ex, and who's fascinated her each time she's seen him in the past, comes to her rescue by offering her a place to stay. Though she's attracted to him she doesn't want to jump right back in to a bad relationship. Theirs is a relationship that progresses slowly to allow her time to gain inner-strength and become her own person. From the uncertainty she displayed while in New York to the self-assuredness gained once she got to the exotic island of Eden to do a decorating job, hers was an inspirational journey to becoming her own woman. Though her wishy-washy nature when first with Gabe frustrated me there was still much to like about her.Gabe is decadently delightful from the very start. While he too is a dominant man he tempers it with compassion and understanding. He's been drawn to Izi from the moment he first saw her but knows that to truly have her he'll have to let her be on her own for awhile. He's the kind of man who can't help but protect, so bringing her home was an easy decision but knowing he wants more and that he'll have to wait to get it frustrated him. All he wants though is what's best for Izi, to make her dreams come true is what propels him. It's not until they get to the erotic environs of Eden though that he finally gets to have her in the way he's always wanted and boy, does it lead to some scorching encounters! His dominance is finally on full display in their sexually-charged interludes as well as in his naughty talk that left me blushing. These scenes were well worth the wait and were nicely balanced with Izi's coming into her own and Gabe's dealing with his own painful past. This book is actually part of two series but can be read on its own as there's only a bit of interaction with previously seen characters. Those brief glimpses though show the Dare family as supportive, caring, and not shy in maneuvering things to their best advantage. This story overall gives readers erotic encounters, vivid scenery to provide a romantic background, and a delectable hero and admirable heroine. It's another delightfully written and carefree read from Ms. Phillips and I look forward to meeting another member of the Dare family soon.

She was attracted and flirted with him at social meetings. He had a girlfriend, she was in a longtime relationship until she caught him cheating and left the Hampton's. Isabelle is stopped and arrested for stealing her car. She is taken into custody and handcuff to the desk. Gabe is looking for his brother, Officer Dare, when he sees Isabelle cuffed to the desk and comes to her rescue. With nowhere else to go she goes to Home with Gabe. The attraction is very strong between them; however, she must leave to start over. Three months later, Gabe's sister, Lucy, issues a challenge Isabelle can't resist. An invitation to Eden to design an Elite nightclub. Will the magic of the island give Gabe and Isabelle what they both want. Ms. Phillips is an Author that delivers the best books that readers want. I highly recommend!

By Bernie I first saw several movie versions of "The Scarlet Pimpernel" and always wanted to see the Play. With the purchase of a Kindle and text-to-speech I could not afford to pass up the book.I was amazed to see that the book started out like the movies with the telling of the blood lust of the French revolution and how one man for the sport of it saved many from the guillotine thwarting the authorities and tricking the sergeant at the city gate into letting him through. Then I was afraid the story was going to bog down as we took a long time to drudge through a scene in an inn. I did not realize that this was to introduce the major players in the soon to be mystery. The essence of the story was best said in the book:"Only between these two hearts there lay a strong, impassable barrier, built up on pride on both sides, which neither of them cared to be the first to demolish."The story really picks up after Marguerite realizes what she has done by giving away the pimpernels identity and disides to make amends.Usually I cannot stand flowery writing or long descriptions of feelings. But for some reason this book was so well written that what would seem like extraneous information actually enhanced the tale. I also noticed it is told mostly from Lady Blakeney's point of view.Once again this is a case of the book being better than the movie. I was surprise to find the Pimpernel poem came from the book:They seek him here they seek him thereThem Frenchies seek him everywhere. Is he in Heaven? Is he in Hell? That damned elusive pimpernel.

I haven't started reading it yet, and am wondering how hard it will be to keep my place with the lines going all the way across each page, but other than that, I like it.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. It was OK By specwardude Hard to determine what time frame it was written. Slanted towards the Stuart family (Charles, his wife, etc) and against the leaders of the commonwealth (Cromwell, etc). Romanticized like many books of this type by going into boring and sometimes unrealistic seemingly made up "details" of certain events. You have to decide what to "throw out". I did learn more about this family history and came to the conclusion that Charles II was lucky to get the throne back as did like so many of other English royalty. He spent too much money, had numerous mistresses, generally abused power and was lucky he did not meet the same fate as his father.Good stories, interesting points of view and after all my whining, I would still recommend it for the historical value..

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Friendship By W. Powell I write this review because this book deserves more than the one review about a customer's problem resolution loading the kindle version. I feel fortunate to own a 1910 edition of the book. Inside its pages are stories about discovering life in the simple things you'd think nothing about until upon further inspection. Whether it be a person, place or situation, in slowing down our own lives to get a better view and understanding of that being viewed allows the object to take on a more serene quality. I just found out that David Grayson is a pen name for author Ray Stannard Baker, a 1940 Pulitzer Prize Winner, and that he'd written a series of these 'Adventures In' books. This book is as relevant today as it was when written. With the advent of the information age and the world becoming one big online community based partly in virtual-reality, it's important to learn from those who once stood face to face with their neighbors to laugh, cry and share in the ups and downs and peculiarities of life. I suppose you could say these are American folklore stories that are mean't to be passed down and treasured. And yes, even downloaded.

0 of 3 people found the following review helpful. This book reboots my Kindle Touch By Jim I started by downloading the Kindle version. When I tried to start reading it, my Touch hung for about 5 min, then rebooted. I then downloaded the ePub version and converted it to MOBI using Calibre. That version also hung and rebooted my Touch. Finally, after using Calibre to convert it to TXT format, and uploading that version, I am able to read the book.
