12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Philosophical Nautical Romantic Farce By Bob Carpenter This book's an odd kettle of fish. It focuses on Jack Easy, starting at his birth, following him through school and into the Navy. He joins to press his socialist philosophy of the "equality of man". The book was first published in 1836, when Karl Marx was 18. Zeitgeist, perhaps?In tone, the book's half nautical fiction along the lines of O'Brian, Forester, Pope, etc., and half 17th century romantic farce that sees a rival found out in women's clothing, diabolical happenings at a costume ball, the come-uppance of a conniving father-confessor, a hilarious three-way duel, and more. The situations will be all the funnier if you've read more "serious" nautical fiction before this.Oddly, even though the author was himself a retired British naval post-captain (who served under Cochrane when he was himself a midshipman!), there is relatively little focus on the nautical details, and a whole lot of focus on the characters. Sure, there's a gale (and quite a good one), and some beam to beam broadside action, but mostly it's about the characters. In every situation, there's little tension as we know our hero will make good a Hornblower-like escape by some indirect means.The author jumps in as the omniscient narrator from time to time. For instance, there's one chapter that's an odd repetition of an argument made in a previous book against overly harsh punishment in the service.The wisdom's along the lines of "spare the rod, spoil the child" and the character "development" sees Mr. Easy move from channeling Marx to channeling Ayn Rand. As the earlier positions are argued as hard as the latter, it's actually hard to see the author's position here, which is quite interesting.Overall, though, the book just doesn't hang together as a continuous, tense story about the sea, which is one of the main reasons to read nautical fiction. On the other hand, if you've run out of the better nautical fiction, this one's well worth a read. A more interesting genre piece from this era is Wilkie Collins's mystery "The Moonstone".

12 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Midshipman Exremely Easy By A Customer Great book in that it doesn't take itself too seriously. Great tongue-in-cheek view of life aboard a British man-of-war. Of course its not too realistic, which O'Brian attempts and Forrester accomplishes, still, a real hilarious adventure tale. Easy leads an unbelievably charmed life, to the point of delightful reading but not incredulity. Characters are real yet outstandingly rich and beautiful. Find yourself putting your head back now and then and laughing in a most horse-like fashion... In regard to sea stories of this nature, I put C.S. Forrester 1st (He is the master, and will always be 1st just as Tolkien will always be 1st for fantasy readers), Marryat 2nd, O'Brian 3rd (too much pontificating...) and Alexander Kent and others a distant, distant, distant 4th.

Tobias While digging through the treasure trove of nautical fiction available, I found this gem.Written in the 1830s, this story is a sharp social commentary combined with the adventure of a midshipman in the Royal Navy. I found this a delightful observation of society, which from today is even more humorous than it might have been 200 years ago.The language isn't far off from today's (the sailing vocabulary hasn't -obviously- changed). A good read for just about any age. Footnotes (in the Heart of Oak edition) to help those unfamiliar with some 19th C. idioms or semi-obscure sailing terminology.If you haven't read Marryat's work yet, this is a good one to get your feet wet.

Carmilla Joseph Sheridan LE FANU (1814 - 1873) Carmilla is a Gothic novella by Joseph Sheridan le Fanu. First published in 1872, it tells the story of a young woman's susceptibility to the attentions of a female vampire named Carmilla. Carmilla predates Bram Stoker's Dracula by over twenty years, had a strong influence on Stoker's famous novel. Sources As with Dracula, critics have looked for the sources used in the writing of Carmilla. Matthew Gibson proposes that Le Fanu used Dom Augustin Calmet's Dissertations sur les apparitions des anges, des demons et des esprits, et sur les revenants et vampires de Hongrie, de Boheme, de Moravie, et de Silesie (1746), which was first anonymously translated into English in a single volume as Dissertations Upon the Apparitions of Angels, Daemons, and Ghosts, and Concerning the Vampires of Hungary, Bohemia, Moravia, and Silesia (1759). and later translated into English in two volumes as The phantom world, or, The philosophy of spirits, apparitions, &c. (1850) Gibson also believes that the Reverend Sabine Baring-Gould's The Book of Were-wolves (1863) and his account of Elizabeth Báthory, Coleridge's Christabel (Part 1, 1797 and Part 2, 1800), and Captain Basil Hall's Schloss Hainfeld; or a Winter in Lower Styria (London and Edinburgh, 1836) are other sources for Le Fanu's Carmilla. Hall's account provides much of the Styrian background and, in particular, a model for both Carmilla and Laura in the figure of Jane Anne Cranstoun, Countess Purgstall.

About the Author Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu (1814 - 1873) Joseph Thomas Sheridan Le Fanu (28 August 1814 – 7 February 1873) was an Irish writer of Gothic tales and mystery novels. He was the leading ghost-story writer of the nineteenth century and was central to the development of the genre in the Victorian era. Three of his best known works are Uncle Silas, Carmilla and The House by the Churchyard.

Sheridan LeFanu's "Carmilla" stands as one of the richest, most literate and most enduring stories in the history of the vampire sub-genre. Many rate it higher than Bram Stoker's "Dracula," and while that estimation is at least debatable, there is no debate that "Carmilla" has exerted a mighty influence, consciously or not, on most vampire fiction to follow in its wake, "Dracula" not excepted. Indeed, Stoker's original early chapter in his masterpiece, later published independently as "Dracula's Guest," is particularly indebted to LeFanu's earlier work. As to which is better, let each reader decide for himself--and so enjoy them both!The story is deceptively simple. A young girl, shaken up in a carriage accident, is left by her traveling mother in the care of the narrator's father. Laura, the young woman in whose voice we are told the tale, becomes fast friends with her new acquaintance, a friendship that is put to a powerful test when a strange malady begins infesting the idyllic Styrian countryside with nightmares, fever, and death.LeFanu's style is unhurried, intelligent, and subtle, and the result is an eminently readable tale of mystery and the macabre that holds up remarkably well to repeated perusals. Though not as famous as "Dracula," and certainly written on a much smaller scale than Stoker's epic vampire opus, "Carmilla" is the more sustained and concentrated of the two. Many have traditionally argued that the novella, or short novel, is the ideal vehicle for a horror story, allowing for plenty of characterization and plot development without pushing the story itself beyond its dramtic limits. This reviewer tends to agree, and asserts that whereas "Dracula," masterwork that it is, often flags and succumbs to the doldrums, "Carmilla" never wavers and holds interest to the bittersweet end.Originally published in 1871, "Carmilla" was quite sensational in its day, but I know many will not judge it to have aged well. A far cry from many modern vampire tales, "Carmilla" is probably not for everyone, or even every vampire fan. The deliberate pace, old-world feel, delicate characterization, subtlety, and relative brevity of the story may be turn-offs to those who expect page after page of gory action and explicit sex from their horror. Be that as it may, discerning readers will find few indulgences better than LeFanu's "Carmilla," a gothic triumph which will endure as long as vampire tales are read.

Another hidden freebie I discovered by chance. Not gory like other vampire books, but simply leads us into life of a female vampire and her passion for the next victim. The love/obsession she has for her victim is delicately potrayed, but surely was controversial at the time this was written. Vampire lovers must read this, as it served as the inspiration of many other vampire works - such as the famous Dracula. This my second novel of this author in 24 hours - 100% free and good. I am impressed and will continue reading his other material. (review written from my Kindle2)

Sheridan Le Fanu's 1872 novella as part of a graduate independent study of gothic literature. It quickly became a personal favorite, as well as an integral part of what will (hopefully) one day become my dissertation.Carmilla tells the tale of a vampire (or oupire, as the peasants refer to them in the novella) who preys on young women; Carmilla becomes intimately attached to the daughter or ward of a wealthy family, and in her pursuit of love and friendship (and perhaps other things...) eventually drains her new found "friend" of her blood and her life. Predating Bram Stoker's classic tale by 25 years, and following the publication of Polidori's short story by 53 years, Le Fanu's tale is one of the first to popularize the figure of the vampire in 19th-century English prose, and has done much to help popularize the subject.What I find particularly interesting about this work is the hybridization of traditional vampire legends (dating back to stories of Lilith herself) and the evolving contemporary vampire mythology of 19th-century England. Like traditional tales, Carmilla is represented as a young woman, and her victims often describe a sense of being strangled in their beds. However, the tale also presents elements of more contemporary ideas, such as a coffin full of blood and long needle-like fangs.I won't go more in-depth for fear of turning a review into a chapter, but I can't praise Carmilla enough. It is a tale sure to delight anyone with interests in 19th-century prose, gothic literature, or vampires (or any combination thereof). LeFanu is a master of gothic tales, and Carmilla is a credit to his name and his craft.

New author to me so I always hope for the best.Gloria meets a young man while in college and falls in love. A few months later, Eldon receives a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Infantry and by the end of the year, Eldon has disappeared from her life.Shortly thereafter, she meets Parker .. a musician with a band, a free-spirit, drop-dead gorgeous man. He also has secrets. When Gloria gets pregnant, he's excited and they marry. When the baby turns out to be a girl, Parker leaves .. he wanted a boy.As far as I am concerned, at this point Parker is a jerk and I say Good Riddance. But Parker comes back and begs for another chance. Yes, she takes him back and she gets pregnant again. Hurray! It's a boy .. only a short time later the baby dies of SIDS and Parker is off and running again.While Parker is doing his thing, Gloria raises her daughter, goes to school, makes something good of her life. Yes ... he comes back ...again. She gets pregnant .. again. A little like wash, rinse, repeat.I didn't like the characters ... I thought she was weak where Parker was concerned and I don't understand why she put up with him. I still think he was a jerk, only now he's also an alcoholic and drug addict. The only person who resonated with me was her oldest daughter, Misty. Misty had a mouth and didn't hesitate to use it.I did finish reading the book, although there were a few times I wanted to just stop and delete it off my kindle. I did persevere. I hated the ending. Overall, it was a depressive book for me.

By Ginger Dawn Harman All the Voices in My Head By Shelia RudesillMy first introduction to the work of Shelia Rudesill was via Facebook. However, it was a surprise to see that one of my reading buddies on Pinterest had pinned a picture of this book. I too had just downloaded the book so I instantly sent a message to see if she or any others wished to read, All the Voices in My Head together. I was surprised at how many mixed responses this book produced from the 5 people that read it. We each had very strong opinions.I was completely engaged with Shelia Rudesill’s novel. The characters were well developed and produced much strong emotions. I also witnessed a change in many of the characters. At the beginning I had much empathy toward Gloria but switched to dislike of her personality and choices by the end. Moreover, the character Parker created such a stir in discussions that I think all of us readers could have lynched him! To create this type of response is every writer’s dream come true, I would imagine. To be able to get such a discussion going displays not only a mastery of character development but a story connection with readers.I also enjoyed the slight humor mixed with the triumph of Gloria’s first sexual experience. I thought the author’s line, “All I could think of was the Battle Hymn of the Republic as he flicked my erect nipple with his tongue” was brilliant. The plot was plausible. However, the ending was too quick of a change for such intense writing. This was the only fault that I found. For example if Gloria’s mother would have dropped letters when she walked in on Parker and Gloria, it would had made the transition to the ending better for the reader. It is these little teases that are often explained later that give the reader a “Ah Ha” or satisfactory understanding of twist that is about to come.The book cover also sparked much conversation from it resembling a neuron to modern art that evoked “thought.” I also liked how the author tied in the title with this line, “the voices in my head calling and I was heading for a breakdown.” Furthermore, the character’s downward emotional spiral is evident when she believes the nurses are turned on by Parker. Gloria’s emotional state is very clear in this line, “They blush when they bathe his privates. I can imagine his penis makes them horny. I wonder if he gets erect when they touch….” I laughed and then cried. “I wonder if they come to get a thrill when I’m not here.”My favorite character was Misty. Many wanted to have more happen with Misty at the end. In a way, I believe we were so emotionally involved that we wanted a longer novel or a sequel. The book does take a dark turn which left some in the Pinterest readers dissatisfied and upset. I had to laugh because it was almost like the author on purpose was not going to let the reader have that ending. Again, this is a much darker novel that the author’s other books. It was like a cliffhanger but gave an explanation. I understand not all stories have a happy ending and I do not always expect a neat tidy “everything is explained ending that is happy ever after.”All the Voices in My Head by Shelia Rudesill stirs up much emotion. I felted very connected to the characters. I also still find myself thinking about Parker and what a jerk he was and what a crappy mother Gloria had. Most of all I think about Misty. This is one book that will promote lots of discussion. All the Voices in My Head by Shelia Rudesill is appropriate for teen to adults. It is well written and I give my recommendation.

Bylina I think we all suffer occasionally from all of the voices in our head just as Gloria does in this book. They tug; they pull; we try to make sense of it all. Sometimes it is just so hard to do intellectually what the heart tells you should be done--or maybe it's the other way around. And so it goes with Gloria, someone trapped in a relationship gone sour, but committed to the bonds that hold two people together through holy matrimony. That makes her a strong role model for her children--the will to remain true to a commitment despite the obstacles in our way. But it is also what makes her weak by allowing guilt to drive her decisions. (It also made me ponder more than once how she performed her job given her decision-making processes.) I couldn't find the component (religious, monetarily, or societal) to ascribe to her commitment to the vows that her husband, Parker, so willingly and often broke. The sex must have been really, really good.The story is well-woven and moves swiftly. Characters are well drawn. Parker might just be one of the biggest jerks (not worst villain, but jerk) in literature. But these people do exist, and life is messy. Kudos on this point. The surprise ending certainly assures us of that. And like the ending of "The Catcher in the Rye" we'll have to wonder afterwards as a reader, "Was it worth it?" I had a few technical issues with some of the story's timeline that are easily fixed--I'm anal that way. And I did wish that some of the scenes could have been outside of narrative. The rating is on the edge of a 4 or 5, but considering I'll think about Gloria beyond the next few minutes, I'll give it a 5.

By A Customer I have just finished this novel and I was very pleasantly surprise at how good it was. The first couple of chapters are a little dull, but as the story gets moving, it is as good as any of George MacDonald's other stories. Now there is quite a bit of Scotch dialect and the story focuses more on one event than do some of the author's other works, but I found the spiritual insight very, very helpful. This book was the next to the last one that this author wrote. And he wrote it when he was 71 years old, so it represents an entire life of spiritual development.The story revolves around a young preacher, Mr. Blatherwick, who because he is self-confident and prideful, makes a very big mistake which dogs him like the hound of heaven throughout the story. He refuses to face himself, his faults and his need for a redeemer until his conscience almost drives him mad. He had become a preacher to make a name for himself, and in reality he had nothing to offer and everything to hide.The characters here are very sympathetic and well drawn. We follow a grieving young girl, a compassionate older minister from the neighboring town, the wise shoemaker and his daughter, and the dissapointed and alienated parents of the young preacher. The ending is quite a shocker.

By A Customer James Blatherwick, the only son of Marion and Peter Blatherwick, is an arrogant, self-centered, independent individual who is firmly convinced that he requires no outside assistance, not even from God. He is proud, self-possessed and has no doubt that his intellect will guide him through the direst of circumstances. It is, while disappointing, not at all surprising that such a one as he is preparing to enter the church as one of God's ministers. Is he dedicated to God, does he revere the Almighty Creator, are his motives pure and altruistic, does he ache for the lost, hurt for those who hurt, cry with those who cry? Not hardly. The ministry offers him the opportunity to display his intellectual prowess and scholastic achievements as well as provides a vehicle by which he may readily obtain prominence, position, power, influence, and a quite comfortable living with minimal exertion-not unlike many pastors, priests, and ministers who I have personally had the distinct misfortune to encounter in this century. Rather than called of God, for he does not know God, to minister to His flock, Blatherwick has chosen the ministry as a profession. He cannot minister, for he cannot love. He cannot heal, for his heart knows no compassion. He cannot do anymore than repeat, from the pulpit, the words that he has memorized, the words that hold absolutely no meaning for him, the words which he himself does not truly believe. There abides, however, a loving and patient God who will take whatever steps He deems necessary to redeem and recover His lost sheep. While Blatherwick feels himself quite safe and secure within his thin veneer of pride, the Almighty begins to work. There resides in the same town in which Blatherwick is comfortably ensconced, a humble cobbler and his daughter, both, having never attended seminary, know more of God than Blatherwick could have conceived possible. It is through the love, patience, understanding, and lives of these two children of God that Blatherwick begins to enter the 'fiery furnace' of redemption and repentance. The redemption of a single soul is, indeed, a process of rebirth, for intrinsic to this procedure is often to be found agonizing and excruciating birth-pangs. It is doubtful whether it could be accomplished otherwise. The old must die, and he does not die willingly, while the new struggles midst cries of pain, sorrow, and suffering to the surface. As the new birth is taking place midst the death of the old, there are prayers innumerable ascending toward the Throne of God. The angels and saints in Heaven, the children of God on earth-all participate in this glorious event. You are cordially invited to attend both the death and the rebirth of James Blatherwick. In attendance there may be many with whom you have had no prior experience. I ask that you pay particular heed to one old cobbler and his loving daughter, Maggie. I also request that you not be shy, for this is truly a wondrous occasion. The Blatherwick family will be only too pleased to welcome you to the birth of their new son.

It's full of imaginative and diffrent fairy tales from all over the world. Such as "The True History of Little Goldenhood " and "The Twelve Dancing Princesses" {my personal favorite}. This book contains thirty-seven tales that will keep you entranced and send you to new lands for days un-end of enjoyment. The numerous and beatiful pen and ink illustrations are done by Henry J. Ford and Lancelot Speed. The 'Red Fairy book' is only one of the numerous books Andrew Lang has put together. Such as the 'Yellow Fairy Book' and the 'Lilac Fairy Book'. Of what I discovered this book is the best one out of them. So if your trying to decide wich one to purchase I reccomend this one!

Marold In the late 19th century, historian, scholar, and anthropologist, Andrew Lang, began publishing collections of fairy tales from around the world. The first volume was `The Blue Fairy Book' published in 1887. Lang was not a true ethnologist, like the German Brothers Grimm. He was far more the `translator' than collector of tales from the source, stories transcribed from being told by people to whom the tales were passed down by word of mouth. In fact, many stories in his first volume, such as Rumpelstiltskin; Snow White; Sleeping Beauty; Cinderella; and Hansel and Gretel were translated from Grimm's books of fairy tales. Some of his `fairy tales' were even `copied from relatively recent fantasy fiction, such as A Voyage to Lilliput, the first of the four episodes in Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels. My inspiration for commenting Lang's series of fairy tale books is for the sheer quantity of tales, the wonderful woodcut illustrations, some few of which may have become almost as popular as the tales (although not quite in the same league as Sir John Tenniel's illustrations for Lewis Carroll's great fantasies), and the fact that I had these when I was young. With twelve of these books, with between 30 and 36 stories in each book, this gives one about 400 different stories. If I were to recommend anything as standard equipment at a grandparents' house, it would be a complete set of these books. Needless to say, there are a few `warnings' to accompany books assembled over 100 years ago. You will encounter a fair number of words with which even an adult may be unfamiliar, let alone a five year old. For example, on the second page of The Princess Mayblossom in The Red Fairy Book, a character puts sulfur in a witch's porridge. This requires at least three explanations. What is sulfur, what is porridge, and why is sulfur in porridge such a bad thing. More difficult still is when a prince entered the town on a white horse which `pranced and caracoled to the sound of the trumpets'. In 19th century London, caracoling (making half turns to the right and the left) was probably as common and as well known as `stepping on the gas' is today. But, if you're a grandparent, that's half the fun, explaining new words and ideas to the young-uns. There is another `danger' which may require just a bit more explanation, although in today's world of crime dramas on TV, I'm not sure that most kids are already totally immune to being shocked by death and dead bodies. In these stories, lots of people and creatures get killed in very unpleasant ways, and lots of very good people and creatures suffer in very unpleasant ways. It's ironic that the critics in Lang's own time felt the stories were 'unreality, brutality, and escapism to be harmful for young readers, while holding that such stories were beneath the serious consideration of those of mature age'. The success of a whole library of Walt Disney feature length cartoons based on these stories is a testament to how well they work with children. But do be warned, Uncle Walt did clean things up a bit. Lang's versions hold back on very little that was ugly and unpleasant in some of these stories. The down side to the great quantity of stories is that even when some come from very different parts of the world, there is a remarkable amount of overlap in theme, plot, and characters. But by the time you get to another story of a beautiful young girl mistreated by a stepmother, it will have been several month since you read Cinderella or the Little Glass Slipper in The Blue Fairy Book. The other side of the coin is that you can play the game of trying to recall what that other story was with a similar theme. There is one very big word of caution about buying these books through Amazon or a similar on line outlet. I stopped counting when I got to twelve different editions of The Blue Fairy Book, or a volume including several of these books. Not all of these editions have the original woodcuts and even worse, not all have a table of contents and introduction. The one publisher which has all twelve volumes is by Dover. Other publishers, such as Flying Chipmunk Publishing (yes, that's it's name) also have all the original illustrations, table of contents, and introduction, but I'm not certain that publisher has all twelve volumes. Dover most certainly does, as I just bought all twelve of them from Amazon. While I suspect these stories may have been `old hat' for quite some time, it may be that with the popularity of Lord of the Rings, the Narnia stories, and the Harry Potter stories, all of which have their share of suffering and death, that these may be in for a revival. Again, the main attraction is that for relatively little money and space, Grammy and Grandad get a great resource for bonding with children. Just be sure you get the Dover edition or another one with all the illustrations, table of contents and other good stuff.

It was a time of a television explosion of cartoons and children's programming, but my favorite times were when my mom would read from the Red Fairy Book to me and my sisters. The book is comprised of approximately 20 short fairy tales from far northern Europe-Sweden, Germany, and Northern Britain. The stories always had good or evil family members, royalty, and of course monsters. But what lured us little girls to these stories was the style they were told in, wierd and twisted, from lands we knew nothing about. Trying to buy this book last year, all I ran across was a paperback version and it had been revised. Some stories were cut out and a couple new ones were put in. DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THIS VERSION IS THE ORIGINAL???? OURS WAS LOST.

About the Author Ellis Parker Butler (1869-1937) was a native of Muscatine, Iowa. Dropping out of high school to help support the family he worked in a number of jobs including ones in a spice mill, an oatmeal mill, a china store, and a wholesale grocery. Moving to New York City in 1896, he began writing for trade magazines such as the Tailor's Review, the Wall Paper News, and The Decorative Furnisher.

In 1905, his humorous short story, Pigs is Pigs appeared in the American Magazine, and the following year it was published in book form. Its phenomenal success allowed Butler to give up editing trade papers and turn to full-time authorship.

Benville Without question, this book is a good factual account of historic accounts and writings associated with islands now sunk but whose names have been passed down to us through the ages via books,legends and mariner's maps. This book was written by William H Babcock in 1922. The information upon which it is based, comes from historical resources, information and knowledge as existed at the time of writing in the early 20th Century. If written today it probably would include a more geological perspective explaining our knowledge about the last Ice Age and discoveries on how the melting ice affected sea-levels causing land to lift, in some cases, and causing submergence in others.The opinion of the author is politely dismissive of the possibility that these islands did exist and tries to account for their continued legendary appearance as due to the heightened imagination ( 'philosophical romance' in Plato's case) of people at a time before Scientific method had established itself. Needless to say, the author neither disproves or proves their existence although he leans in favour of the former.In terms of modern scientific proof not much has changed since the book was written and there is no more new knowledge today regarding the lost islands of Atlantis, Hy Brazil, Mayda and others mentioned in the book. Nevertheless, this book is a very good examination of all available sources at the time and shows many old maps, highlighting the discrepancies between maps of different eras. I should mention that the quality of the maps is not very good presumably because it is based on a copies of old maps. However the book is still an excellent source for discovering what ancient maps are available and how the cartographers made mistakes copying the information from one map to another.In the end, you can make up your own opinion on whether you feel these islands ever existed. The author understandably, given his time, scoffs at the idea but, to his great credit, gives us an excellent account of all references he could find relating to these lost or legendary islands.Personally, I believe that loss of land to the sea is a natural regular occurrence albeit over a long time. It normally takes thousands of years and these islands most likely did exist at one time and were sunk due to a catastrophe or the common phenomenon of hydro-isostasy and inundation at a time of high sea levels at the end of last ice age. Whatever rump of land was left was eventually eroded away.The evidence unfortunately is buried deep in the sands at the bottom of the Atlantic. But whatever your viewpoint, I would recommend reading this well written book.

Bloom Anyone familiar with the modern contretemps over the authenticity of the so-called Vinland Map, a purported chart drafted around 1440 showing, for the first time on any map, the Northeastern Canadian shore as discovered by Viking explorers in the 11th century, will appreciate geographer Babcock's efforts to explain a score or so of other apparently mythical places once engraved on navigator's atlases. The still sought-after Atlantis is a good starting point for Professor Babcock, who not only provides explanations of how and why non-existent places got recorded on navigational aides, but also gives readers a nice tour of early exploration and myth-making. Since this book was published almost 90 years ago, there have been other efforts to trace the origins of map-making errors, notably some essays by Eva Taylor in the 1950s and 1960s and Woods Hole hydrographer Henry Stommel's Lost Islands, published in 1984. Stommel only deals with places that were shown on Admiralty charts, a practice begun by the British Hydrographic Office in 1795, so much of the lore described by Babcock is missing from his study. Babcock does show prudent skepticism about most of these alleged sightings and visits to places no longer on the map but leaves open the possibility that some of them may represent actual places somehow either mis-located or mysteriously disappeared. The book is an excellent baedeker for those who might want to create their own fictional places in a novel, poem or work of art.

About the Author Anthony Trollope was a Victorian-era English author best known for his satirical novel The Way We Live Now, a criticism of the greed and immorality he witnessed living in London. Trollope was employed as a postal surveyor in Ireland when he began to take up writing as a serious pursuit, publishing four novels on Irish subjects during his years there. In 1851 Trollope was travelling the English countryside for work when was inspired with the plot for The Warden, the first of six novels in what would become his famous The Chronicles of Barsetshire series. Trollope eventually settled in London and over the next thirty years published a prodigious body of work, including Barsetshire novels such as Barchester Towers and Doctor Thorne, as well as numerous other novels and short stories. Trollope died in London 1882 at the age of 67.

An Unjustly Neglected English Language Classic By Robert Moore THE LAST CHRONICLE OF BARSET is one of the great novels in the English language, and yet it is not widely read. The reason for this is obvious: it is the LAST novel in the Barsetshire series of novels, and a relatively small number make it all the way through the previous five volumes. This is a shame, because while all the previous novels are quite excellent and thoroughly entertaining, the final novel in the series is a work of an entirely different level of magnitude.This novel is also one of the darkest that Trollope wrote. The moral dilemma in which Crawley finds himself would seem to belong more readily to the world of Dostoevsky than Victorian England.Can this novel be read on its own, without reading the novels that precede it? Yes, but I do feel that it is best read after working through the other books in the series first. This is hardly an unfortunate situation, since all the books in the series are superb (with the exception of the first novel, THE WARDEN, which, while nice, is merely a prelude to the far superior five novels that came after it). Many of the characters in THE LAST CHRONICLE appeared first as characters in the other novels, and the central character of the book, Crawley, himself appeared earlier.Trollope is...one of the most entertaining writers the English language has produced. At this point I have read around 20 of his novels, and fully intend to read more. But of all his books, this one might be his finest. The only two that I feel are close to the same level are his incredible books THE WAY WE LIVE NOW and HE KNEW HE WAS RIGHT (possibly the finest work on excessive jealousy since OTHELLO). Anyone who loves the English novel owes it to him or herself to read as many of these volumes as possible. My recommendation would be to read first the six novels in the Barsetshire Chronicles, and then to move on to the other two novels I mentioned. If still hooked, then try his other major series of novels, variously known as the Political novels or the Palliser novels or the Parliamentary novels, which begin with CAN YOU FORGIVE HER?

Josiah Crawley, impoverished curate of Hogglestock, has been accused of stealing a check for 20 pounds. Confused about how the check came into his possession, he has no defense to offer. Mrs. Proudie, shrewish tyrant over her husband, the Bishop, is determined to hound Crawley out of his meager position. Also caught up in the problem is young Henry Grantly, son of the aristocratic Archdeacon, who is in love with the beautiful and intelligent daughter of the accused man--a match that his father bitterly opposes.This is the main plot, but there is a wealth of subplots, each worthy of its own novel. Among these is a continuation of John Eames' wooing of Lily Dale, carried over from "The Small House at Allington."The Last Chronicle is the longest of the Barsetshire novels--and the best, considerably better in style than the more popular "Barchester Towers." Trollope's characterizations are, as usual, superb, among the very best in all literature. He skillfully interweaves all the various strands of the novel into a very satisfying whole. And he has largely freed himself from the sometimes annoying philosophical asides to the reader that detracted from some of his earlier novels. This book merits consideration as a true masterwork.

He lived long enough to see his modest reputation fade, in contrast to that of many of his famous novelist contemporaries. Nowadays the situation seems to be reversing.Of special merit, amongst his huge output, are the so-called Barsetshire ("clerical") novels, and the so-called Palliser ("political") novels. Of the former, the last and longest is "The Last Chronicle of Barset". Not only are there fresh concerns, complications and current affairs introduced here, but there are also fond and final appearances of people and places encountered in the earlier Barsetshire novels. Everybody's favourite literary virago, Mrs Proudie, is again denouncing and dominating everybody. Trollope even contrives to create a character who has the temerity to say to her, "Peace, Woman!"There are the innumerable characters of marriageable age, whose names are perhaps more memorable than their characters, whose charming dialogues and relationship problems are deftly laid out and interwoven. Above all, there is master story-teller Anthony Trollope, admitting finally that for him Barset has been a real place, a place where he as been induced to wander too long by his "love of old friendships, and by the sweetness of old faces".Superb TV and radio adaptations of Trollope's Barsetshire novels have appeared in recent years. His novels read aloud well, too, and audio cassette readings, some of them unabridged, can provide endless hours of rich listening pleasure.

Includes: 15 Colored Illustrations and Biography The Book of the Dead is an ancient Egyptian funerary text, used from the beginning of the New Kingdom (around 1550 BCE) to around 50 BCE. The original Egyptian name for the text, transliterated rw nw prt m hrw is translated as Book of Coming Forth by Day. Another translation would be Book of emerging forth into the Light. "Book" is the closest term to describe the loose collection of texts consisting of a number of magic spells intended to assist a dead person's journey through the Duat, or underworld, and into the afterlife and written by many priests over a period of about 1000 years. The Book of the Dead was part of a tradition of funerary texts which includes the earlier Pyramid Texts and Coffin Texts, which were painted onto objects, not papyrus. Some of the spells included were drawn from these older works and date to the 3rd millennium BCE. Other spells were composed later in Egyptian history, dating to the Third Intermediate Period (11th to 7th centuries BCE). A number of the spells which made up the Book continued to be inscribed on tomb walls and sarcophagi, as had always been the spells from which they originated. The Book of the Dead was placed in the coffin or burial chamber of the deceased. There was no single or canonical Book of the Dead. The surviving papyri contain a varying selection of religious and magical texts and vary considerably in their illustration. Some people seem to have commissioned their own copies of the Book of the Dead, perhaps choosing the spells they thought most vital in their own progression to the afterlife. The Book of the Dead was most commonly written in hieroglyphic or hieratic script on a papyrus scroll, and often illustrated with vignettes depicting the deceased and their journey into the afterlife.

By Madd Atheist I gave this book 5 stars simply for the reason being that Budge was the first to translate the Egyptian Text and offered a literal translation. By A Customer It's a given that serious egyptologists will roll their eyes at anything by Budge (there's a great moment at the beginning of the film "Stargate" where James Spader's character makes a quip about Budge's books).However, if you are interested in 19th-century occultists (Blavatsky, Crowley, etc) then you probably should have this translation on your shelf next to a more modern one, because Budge is a primary source of their ideas about Egyptian gods and religion (which are interesting in their own right, though not historically accurate or scholarly). And again, at least Budge's stuff is widely and inexpensively available in Dover paperback editions....

Book of the Dead-Giovanni Callanta (Chicago) By Giovanni Callanta Being an archaeologist, I know better than to claim that there is such a thing as a wrong or right inference. They are all just interpretations of available information that can be translated differently by another person (I believe this is why Budge included the original text--in order to give the reader a chance to make hs own inferences). The best way to judge an interpretation based on artifacts and proveniences is by the background and experience of the academic doing the translation. Being a celebrated Egyptologist for such a long period of time ought to count for something. I know I wouldn't disparage a fellow Archy based on the words of a fictional man from a movie that claimed pyramids were built by aliens.

She brings a delicate touch to her "soft" science fiction stories, which just means that her characters are well developed, recognizable, and compelling. This particular story's rural setting reminds me of Clifford Simak, which is never a bad thing. Highly recommended!

It's a romance and a look at female sexuality from a female "alien" viewpoint. The story is dated, but touches on gender politics in a time when Science Fiction New Wave was just forming.
