One of the key tenets of existentialism is to “live life to the fullest.” On a study abroad trip in the South of France, Marie feels enormous pressure to squeeze every drop of enjoyment out of life. But when she makes out with a guy at a party, she fears there is an infinitesimal chance she contracted HIV from this kiss. With this doubt tormenting her, she begins to feel like an exile from Eden.

The protagonist finds herself with the pressures of a tourist to enjoy every moment of her life By Nate This novella engages the reader with psychological conflict. The protagonist finds herself with the pressures of a tourist to enjoy every moment of her life, but is confronted with the inner existential turmoils which we cannot escape, no matter where we are. This inner conflict runs parallel with a suspenseful plot. Recommended reading material for those studying abroad or those enamored with travel.

There is a sense of angst expressed here that is familiar.

  • The Imitation of Christ (Latin: De Imitatione Christi) by Thomas à Kempis is a Christian devotional book. It was first composed in Latin ca.1418-1427. It is a handbook for spiritual life arising from the Devotio Moderna movement, of which Kempis was a member. The Imitation is perhaps the most widely read devotional work next to the Bible and is regarded as a devotional and religious classic. Its popularity was immediate, and it was printed 745 times before 1650. Apart from the Bible, no book has been translated into more languages than the Imitation of Christ. The text is divided into four books, which provide detailed spiritual instructions: "Helpful Counsels of the Spiritual Life", "Directives for the Interior Life", "On Interior Consolation" and "On the Blessed Sacrament". The approach taken in the Imitation is characterized by its emphasis on the interior life and withdrawal from the world, as opposed to an active imitation of Christ by other friars. The book places a high level of emphasis on the devotion to the Eucharist as key element of spiritual life.

Listening with the Heart By Mark Blackburn "Want to know the best advice I ever heard?" asked Larry King, in an interview published today in Canada's National Post newspaper: "I never learned ANYTHING while I was talking." 50 years experience at the interviewer's microphone and Larry's best advice comes down to one word. "Listen!"Coincidentally (or maybe not!) I picked up this just-received book, sent to me by a dear friend who recalled my reviewing an earlier published edition of this same "Ronald Knox translation." And it literally fell open to these words,"By all means ask questions, but LISTEN to what holy writers have to tell you . . . often enough, (when we hear) Holy Scripture, we are distracted by mere curiosity; we want to seize upon some point and argue about it, when we ought to (listen) and move on."I flipped open "The Imitation" just now and my eyes (lately fixated on my newest pride and joy were these: (p 32 under the heading, "ABOUT SELF-CONFIDENCE, AND HOW TO GET RID OF SELF-CONCEIT")"It is nonsense to depend for your happiness on created things (and) why all this self-importance? Do not boast of riches, if you happen to possess them . . . nor about the important friends you have; boast rather of God's friendship."Do not give yourself airs, if you have physical strength or beauty; it only takes a spell of illness to waste the one, or mar the other. Do not be self-satisfied about your own skill or cleverness; God is hard to satisfy, and it is from him that they come, all these gifts of nature."He reads our thoughts, and will only think the worse of you, if you think yourself better than other people. Even your good actions must not be a source of pride to you: If you have any good qualities to show for yourself, credit your neighbor with even better qualities: that is the way to be humble."To be humble is to enjoy undisturbed peace of mind, while the proud heart is swept with gusts of envy and resentment."----Seven years ago (on my birthday actually) I wrote my very first review for Amazon.com -- for an earlier re-print of this same translation. This latest version, from Ignatius Press of San Francisco, is far-and-away the most beautiful and features cover art by Andrea Solario (1480-1540) from the "Galleria Borghese, Rome" -- painted about a century after Thomas a Kempis produced his "Imitation." Inside artwork includes some marvelous, same-period woodcuts by Albrecht Durer.----In his (2005) FOREWARD to this new edition, psychologist and priest Benedict Groeschel (seen by millions on his "Sunday Night Live" TV show on EWTN) recalls stealing his first copy of the "Imitation" from the public library in his Caldwell NJ hometown - slipping it into his schoolbag intending to return it "to its rightful place on the shelf, in two weeks time, the ordinary period for a book loan in those days.""The title suggested to my 12-year-old mind that this must be a story about someone who pretended to be Jesus. I went and sat by a window . . . the spring sun (shining) on the oak table, I can still see my blue-sweatered arm around the book as I began to read:"'Vanity of Vanities - all is vanity except to love God and serve him alone.' At that moment I was electrified, and I sat there reading page after page . . . . for two hours, mesmerized by the book!"----As for the translation? Is it really the best-ever? I stand by my thoughts of seven years ago:"I have several translations of the Imitation but I keep coming back to this one. I believe many readers will find this translation 'flows' better than the others, written as it is in a warm, gentle and accessible style by a master translator and communicator, Monsignor Ronald Knox. A convert to Catholicism who produced an acclaimed Latin-to-English translation of the Bible, Knox completed the first 30 or so chapters of the Imitation before his death in 1957. He wrote to Michael Oakley, two months before his passing: "If I die without finishing my translation, please tell my executors that you are to finish it." The younger Latin scholar did a splendid, seamless job of completing Knox's superb translation of what was--until this century--the second most widely read book in the world. What a delight that this version is once again available, [50 years] after its first publication. If you purchase only one copy of the Imitation in your lifetime, make it this one."

They are depressed, filled with worry and have so little joy in their lives. This book speaks specifically to those problems. In a nutshell this book says that we are miserable because we are trying to find joy in other people and in other things and everything out there will fail us and let us down. The only thing that provides true happiness, peace and contentment is God. The Imitation of Christ goes through exercises on how we can detach ourselves from worldly things to focus on God. Once we are focused solely on God and have the faith that God will provide everything we need, then we can really enjoy the world around us. Enjoy it because once we receive true happiness from God we can see how beautiful the world is and enjoy it as the gift God created it to be, instead of something that we grab onto in the hopes that it will provide us our happiness and security.

Indiscretions of Archie, by P.G. Wodehouse

From Library Journal Frederick Davidson may not be the best interpreter of P.G. Wodehouse's comic masterpieces, but he's not the worst and is assuredly the most active, with at least 25 Wodehouse titles under his belt. He is, in fact, one of the most popular and active readers in the general audiobook field. He reads with a dry British accent, low-key and almost drawling. His great weakness is that he enunciates all young women with the same breathy, indistinguishably vapid intonation. With men, on the other hand, he offers a wide interpretation, some quite funny as he portrays such personality traits as growling irascibility or stumbling befuddlement. Luckily for him here, there are few female characters. Author Wodehouse began publishing books in 1902 and died in 1975 after having been named a Knight of the British Empire. The present book first appeared in 1921 at a time when Wodehouse was at least as well known for his collaborative work in America as a playwright. As usual with Wodehouse, misunderstandings and coincidences abound. This is solid entertainment, recommended for public libraries.?Don Wismer, Cary Memorial Lib, Wayne, Me.Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review "The handsome bindings are only the cherry on top of what is already a cake without compare." Evening Standard "Wodehouse's idyllic world can never stale. He will continue to release future generations from captivity that may be more irksome than our own. He has made a world for us to live in and delight in" Evelyn Waugh "He exhausts superlatives" Stephen Fry

About the Author Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (P. G. Wodehouse) was an English humorist and writer best known for his Jeeves and Blandings Castle novels. Educated at boarding schools, Wodehouse turned to writing at a young age, demonstrating great skill at humorous sketches and musical lyrics. He continued to write part-time while pursuing, at the behest of his father, a career in banking, and successfully contributed numerous pieces to Punch, Vanity Fair, and The Daily Express, among other publications. In addition to his literary work, Wodehouse was incorporated into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in recognition of his collaboration with Cole Porter on Anything Goes, his lyrics to the song Bill from Show Boat, and his work on the musicals Rosalie and The Three Musketeers.

While interned along with other British citizens in Germany during the Second World War, Wodehouse made a series of radio broadcasts for which he was accused of being a collaborator; and, although later cleared of the charges, he never returned to England. His work has influenced many other writers including Evelyn Waugh, Rudyard Kipling, J. K. Rowling, and John Le Carr?. P. G. Wodehouse died in 1975 at the age of 93.

Getting locked out of his artist friend's apartment in a scarlet bathrobe, and many more such money-making schemes gone haywire, including those to get his f-in-law's approval. The portrait gone awry, and the shoes left outside the door.... Oh no! I'm not going to tell you anymore, you just must read this, and you'll find yourself laughing uncontrollably wondering how you ever thought the world was a drab place! With Wodehouse, there is always laughter in the world!

Hotel de Wodehouse By Gord Wilson In addition to an avid enjoyment of the Drones, Jeeves, golf, and Mulliner tales, I find I am developing a marked taste for Wodehouse's light novels. Everything he touches, it seems, turns to laughter. Other places the commedia del arte takes place in motion picture studios, on cruise ships, at resorts on the French Riviera, but here the venue is the Hotel Cosmopolis, drawn, no doubt, from his observations of New York nightlife. And here's Archie, a good-hearted, bumbling Brit out to seek his fortune in the colonies. And of course he met a girl while vacationing. And of course she's a millionaire's daughter. And of course said millionaire is proprietor of said hotel. Does it sound like a formula? Right ho! a formula for fun. Richard Usborne says this book is a lot of stiched together stories. But so what? Ukridge is a lot of not stiched together stories. This book introduces one of Wodehouse's best heroines, Lucille, as the power behind the throne of the Lucy/Archie axis, together pitted against her anti-Archie father. How can you not order it?

Are you pinned against the ropes? Have you got the blues? Melancholia got you in its grip? Worried that Obama may not be able to get your brother-in-law the job running US Steel and thus off your couch? .... Fear not! The cry goes out: P.G. Wodehouse to the rescue! There is nothing like a good Wodehouse read to cheer one up, not a pill, not a drink, not a men or women - just Wodehouse! Wodehouse is what the doctor ordered to tickle you in the funny bone and get a smile going on the old face. Here's Archie, a good-hearted, bumbling Brit out to seek his fortune in the colonies - all in the typically wonderful Wodehouse way! This book is totally hilarious! One loud laugh after another! A Wodehouse masterpiece! If you love Monty Python, Faulty Towers, Jeeves and Wooster, Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, and other witty British Comedies, you'll love this great Wodehouse work. The writing, plot, wit, and word play is spot on. This is timeless stuff. And can I add terrific? This is laugh out loud funny. I adored every moment!

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. How Wodehouse saved the Swoop By EA Solinas Legendary humorist P.G. Wodehouse is best known for his upper-crust, screwball comedies, especially those of aristocratic goof Bertie Wooster and his serene valet Jeeves. But Wodehouse was only embarking on his long, prestigious literary career when he wrote "The Swoop! Or, How Clarence Saved England." It's a very brief novel, lacking in Wodehouse's usual complexity, but it's still an amusing (if brief) read.A faithful Boy Scout, Clarence is one of those kids who worries a lot about their country -- almost too much. He belongs to a pleasantly staid family who think he's a little nuts, because of his constant moans about how England has deteriorated. But it seems that he might be at least partly right when German prince invades during tea.Nine other hostile armies invade England, much to the indignation of the populace. Unfortunately, the English don't put up much of a resistance, since "the Socialists had condemned the army system as unsocial." And suddenly Clarence and the Boy Scouts are the thing standing between Endland and total occupation."At last I begin to realise the horrors of an invasion -- for the invaders." Wodehouse wrote this amusing little book before World War II -- during that war, the idea of Germans invading wouldn't have been as funny. But the ideas are still quite amusing: of a smallish invasion force being politely but firmly ejected from an Essex house, because they interrupted teatime.Plotwise, it's not very complex. In fact, compared to his usual tangles of love, blackmail and stolen policemen's helmets, it's simple. But it is amusing, the idea of a bunch of Boy Scouts overthrowing nine different invading forces. Wodehouse's entertaining dialogue is brilliantly absurd. ("An hour ago your camp was silently surrounded by patrols of Boy Scouts, armed with catapults and hockey-sticks")."The Swoop! Or How Clarence Saved England" is a fun little novel by a master humorist, who was just starting to find his niche when he wrote it. It's not the best that P.G. Wodehouse wrote, but it's still amusing.

With a preface by Wodehouse suggesting it was intended as a cautionary tale on the dangers of unilateral disarmament. BTW, why is it that the date of original publishing is nowhere to be found in these ebooks?

When some of Ernest Hemingway's long-lost manuscripts fall into the hands of a disillusioned Hemingway scholar, he gets a lesson in the fleeting nature of passion in this award-winning short story.

Inspired by the true story Hemingway related in his memoir, A Moveable Feast, of his early stories lost by his wife, Hadley, somewhere in France, this story explores the nature of the things we can hold on to, and those very precious things that always seem to slip through our fingers.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Different Sort of Moveable Feast By MM A good solid story, beautifully and economically written. This will be an absolute treat for Hemingway fans: a unique "What if?" tale, with lots of scholarly references to Ernest, his life, and his world. But it should also appeal to those who aren't Hemingway devotees or who aren't all that familiar with his stories. Nice story development, too, with the thoughtful "Hemingway-ification" of the main character. Papa would definitely approve.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great! Wonderful! By Christine N. Ethier I should note that I am not a Hemingway fan. I'm really not. I think students should read me; I can tell you why he is an important writer, but that's about it.In her short story about an Hemingway scholar's discovery and the effects it has on his life, Claire Splan makes me want to read Hemingway. And honestly, isn't that the highest praise one can give of a well written story about an author?Well, that and it was funny.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Short, but effective By tzefirah Although it only took about 1/2 hour to read this short story, it was powerful and well executed. Ernest Hemingway fans in particular will enjoy this story about the finding of lost Hemingway manuscripts, but I think this story has global appeal, as well.

The Thirty-Nine Steps (Diversion Classics), by John Buchan

Review It is the dimension of the mysterious that makes Buchan’s writing so unfailingly compelling. (John Keegan, from the introduction) --introduction

About the Author John Buchan was born in Perth. His father was a minister of the Free Church of Scotland; and in 1876 the family moved to Fife where in order to attend the local school the small boy had to walk six miles a day. Later they moved again to the Gorbals in Glasgow and John Buchan went to Hutchesons' Grammar School, Glasgow University (by which time he was already publishing articles in periodicals) and Brasenose College, Oxford. His years at Oxford - 'spent peacefully in an enclave like a monastery' - nevertheless opened up yet more horizons and he published five books and many articles, won several awards including the Newdigate Prize for poetry and gained a First. His career was equally diverse and successful after university and, despite ill-health and continual pain from a duodenal ulcer, he played a prominent part in public life as a barrister and Member of Parliament, in addition to being a writer, soldier and publisher. In 1907 he married Susan Grosvenor, and the marriage was supremely happy. They had one daughter and three sons. He was created Baron Tweedsmuir of Elsfield in 1935 and became the fifteenth Governor- General of Canada, a position he held until his death in 1940. 'I don't think I remember anyone,' wrote G. M. Trevelyan to his widow, 'whose death evoked a more enviable outburst of sorrow, love and admiration.' John Buchan's first success as an author came with Prester John in 1910, followed by a series of adventure thrillers, or 'shockers' as he called them, all characterized by their authentically rendered backgrounds, romantic characters, their atmosphere of expectancy and world-wide conspiracies, and the author's own enthusiasm. There are three main heroes: Richard Hannay, whose adventures are collected in The Complete Richard Hannay; Dickson McCunn, the Glaswegian provision merchant with the soul of a romantic, who features in Huntingtower, Castle Gay and The House of the Four Winds; and Sir Edward Leithen, the lawyer who tells the story of John MacNab and Sick Heart River, John Buchan's final novel. In addition, John Buchan established a reputation as an historical biographer with such works as Montrose, Oliver Cromwell and Augustus.

From AudioFile This enjoyable 1947 radio adaptation of John Buchan's 1916 thriller comes from the vaults of the CBC. More faithful to Buchan's novel than was Alfred Hitchcock's 1935 film adaptation, Charles Rittenhouse's script also makes fine use of the sound medium. Musical chords punctuate dramatic moments. A montage of train sounds and conversational snatches succinctly maps hero Richard Hannay's escape from London and the clutches of a spy ring. After he disguises himself in the garb of a cooperative milkman, Hannay's innocent whistling lets us trace his steps as he nonchalantly slips past the police. Two badly muffled passages turn up, as expected with historic radio transcriptions, but the play is fast-paced fun. G.H. © AudioFile 2002, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

16 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Classic, historically important, but has it's weaknesses By Douglas J. Bassett This is one of the classics of the mystery/thriller genre, and it has a great deal of historical importance. That's easy to see when you place it up against other famous books of this era -- stuff by Le Queux or Oppenheim, for instance. The best books by those guys are quite fun to read, but they're clearly coming from an earlier era of popular fiction -- one focused on a kind of Victorian/Edwardian style of adventure fiction (an interest in the aristocracy, an interest in melodrama, a very restrained sense of "action", etc.). THIRTY NINE STEPS, though, seems proto-modern in contrast. The protagonist, Richard Hannay, is a middle class guy thrust out of his humdrum life by a chance encounter with adventure. How many modern thrillers start out with the same general premise?Buchan also establishes many of the modern tropes of the thriller here -- while I don't think he wrote the first "man on the run" story, his version of it is probably what has influenced most modern thriller writers. Hannay goes to ground in Scotland and we see another thing that a lot of thriller writers adopted, the "window into other cultures" (thriller as picaresque novel). Buchan is also pretty good with the action sequences, always pretty rare in books and vanishingly rare for this time period. The highlight of the book, by far, is the escape from the cellar sequence, which still reads like the wind.I could go on. (Buchan plays with the notion of "disguise" in an interesting way, for instance, and seems on some level to peg that to socioeconomic status -- Hannay confesses he's most uncomfortable with the emergent middle class, I suspect because he doesn't understand how they "fit" into his world.) The important thing is that if you're truly interested in mystery/suspense fiction, Buchan is a writer you sooner or later should read, and for it's influence and historical importance alone THIRTY NINE STEPS is a great book. All that said, this is not my favorite Buchan. This is still early in his career and he's still working some things out -- some things are presented in almost rough draft form. The climax has it's moments and in some ways is quite clever (in brings to a conclusion his ideas about "disguise", as the villains end up doing the same thing Hannay has done through the rest of the book)but it's as contrived as hell how Hannay gets there, the seams are showing here. Also, I'm still not sure I understand the villains' plot. Yes, I know, they "want war". But why? What do they hope to gain from it? And how, again, does this particular plan ensure that happening? In short, great writer, good book, generally recommendable all around and a must-read if you're a serious fan of the genre -- but he wrote better, believe me.

13 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Too few thrills for a thriller By Karl Janssen The Thirty-Nine Steps, an espionage thriller by John Buchan, was originally published in 1915. A story of a lone man taking on a conspiracy against his country, it can be seen as a precursor to the spy novels of authors such as Ian Fleming and John Le Carré. Though it was probably ground breaking for its time, and helped to establish the template of its genre, to a 21st-century audience who has read, seen, and heard thousands of spy stories, it is hardly outstanding.Richard Hannay, a former mining engineer with some experience as an intelligence officer, has spent most of his life in South Africa. Having returned to his native Britain, Hannay finds himself bored to death in London, hoping for a diversion to rouse him from his ennui. His wish is granted in the form of Franklin P. Scudder, an American neighbor who shows up on his doorstep, asking to hide out in Hannay's apartment. Scudder has discovered a plot by anarchists to assassinate the Premier of Greece, thereby plunging Europe into chaos and war. When Scudder is murdered, Hannay realizes that the killers will be after him next. He flees London, hoping to hide out in rural Scotland, but his pursuers are hot on his trail.Though originally published as a magazine serial, The Thirty-Nine Steps is a step above run-of-the-mill pulp fiction. The subject matter could lend itself easily to sensationalization, but Buchan delivers his tale with a matter-of-factness that strengthens its believability. When describing the sinister plot that threatens the stability of the free world, however, Buchan reverts to ambiguous slang and vague clichés that leave the reader wondering exactly what the plan is that Hannay is trying to thwart. The aim of the villains seems to be to start a world war, but given that World War I was a foregone conclusion at the time the book was published, how shocking is that?Hannay's first person narrative voice is charmingly level-headed and seasoned with a fair degree of cynicism and a bit of wry wit. Though a likeable and identifiable hero, he possesses the annoying quality of being just too darn lucky. Although he seems to have a good head on his shoulders, more often than not he gets out of a jam not through the use of his wits but through the assistance of a series of benevolent strangers that miraculously appear at convenient moments, always willing to help. Though it's refreshing that Hannay is an everyman, not a superhero like so many spy story protagonists, today's reader expects a little more self-sufficiency from their espionage heroes, and wants to see their man solve his own problems. The villains are usually lurking offstage somewhere and never quite materialize distinctively enough to be satisfactorily menacing. The final chapter delivers a suspenseful scene, but squanders its thrills by finishing with an abrupt and weak ending. The Thirty-Nine Steps may have served as an important stage in the development of the spy novel, but it's a stage long since passed. In a market glutted with espionage thrillers, why settle for one that's just OK?

By The Reviewer Formerly Known as Kurt Johnson When the narrator heard about the strange tales that were coming out of Tempest Mountain, he determined to get to the bottom of it. Taking two strong men with him, they camp out in the dilapidated Martense mansion, where horror overtakes them, and only the narrator escapes alive. But, this does not deter him in the least, and he keeps at the mystery...though the answer he finds is more horrifying that he might have imagined! This is another great H.P. Lovecraft story. Written in 1922, it is a good, solid piece of horror fiction. I must say, I like the antagonists, though I won't spoil things by saying who or what they are. I think it's a great story!

About the Author James Fenimore Cooper was a nineteenth-century American author and political critic. Esteemed by many for his Romantic style, Cooper became popular for his depiction of Native Americans in fiction. Before Cooper considered himself a writer, he was expelled from Yale University, served as a midshipman for the United States Navy, and became a gentleman farmer. Cooper wrote many notable works including The Pioneers, The Last of the Mohicans, and The Red Rover, which was adapted and performed on stage in 1828. Cooper passed away in 1851 at the age of 61.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. "When my foot touched the wharf, my whole estate was under my hat" By T. Patrick Killough One promotional review of Fenimore Cooper's 1843 book NED MYERS calls it both "engrossing biography of Ned Myers, a sailor and Cooper's companion at sea" as well as "this nautical novel." NED MYERS is, however, simply biography. It is not a novel. It is not a work of fiction. Admittedly, NED MYERS does display recurring elements of Cooper's 32 novels. These include chases, captures, escapes, storms and even a bit of romance. Other features found in some Cooper novels include encounters with pirates, struggles of conscience against drink, growth in personal religion and a handful of speculations on politics and morals. But all these elements were historical fact: part of the life story of one "Edward Robert Meyers" (Ch. I), born in Quebec c. 1793.In 1806-7 Meyers, who had changed his German name to Myers after slipping off as a lad to New York, shipped out on the merchantman the Sterling as a cabin boy on a trading voyage to England and back. Also aboard, but not lodging "before the mast" with the common seaman, was 16-year old James Cooper, the future novelist, historian and biographer who would add "Fenimore" to his name. The two boys became friends, and took in the sights of England together. They then went their separate ways for decades, as sailors do. In late 1842 Ned took the initiative to reconnect with his old shipmate. And they then spent five months at Cooper's home in Cooperstown, New York, putting together the manuscript of NED MYERS.This is a perfect little book, modest in its goals, sure in execution. Author Cooper assumes the persona of his subject and collaborator (they shared sales royalties later). He writes short, punchy sentences unlike the often contorted, clumsy ramblings of THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS or THE DEERSLAYER. Myers is made to tell his tale chronologically and there is something in it for every reader: was a royal prince Ned's godfather? How many ships did Ned sail on? Answer: at least 72 and closer to a hundred by another reckoning, which includes his transports while a British prisoner of war after capture on Lake Ontario in 1813. Ned spent most of his years sailing with the private merchant marine but also did three stints with the U.S. Navy. He learned Bengalee in Calcutta, traded opium from India for metals in Canton, China. He knew the Mediterranean, Antarctic waters, crused off South Carolina during the "nullification" threats and saw action in Florida during the Seminole War.One thing that strikes me in this biography is the economics of being a simple sailor. Ned told his story as a lesson to sailors everywhere on evils to avoid and good things to do. One lesson was that a sailor could easily save $100/year above his expenses for clothes, food and modest entertainment. And that, unless squandered, would be enough when added to down the decades to assure a comfortable old age in retirement. Often enough, Ned would leave behind a fairly tidy sum with a trustworthy landlord before shipping out again. But normally he would return to his home base (usually New York City) and within a month or two have blown his savings on giving parties and carousing. He early gave in to excessive drinking.Let me conclude this review with a passage underlining Ned's prevailing poverty between voyages. It also shows the laconic narrative style Cooper displayed in this biography. During an otherwise pleasant voyage to the Caribbean, Ned Myers's passenger-carrying merchantman the Belle Savage was struck by a storm a day's sail south of Bermuda, took on water and sank. Lifeboats were successfully launched. And a nearby brig the Mary picked up all survivors.Six days later, Ned and others were unloaded in New York City"at no great distance from Fulton Market. When my foot touched the wharf, my whole estate was under my hat, and my pockets were as empty as a vessel with a swept hold. ... I began to think I was born to bad luck, and being almost naked, was in nowise particular what became of me. ... but at no period of my life did I run in debt" (Ch. XII).-OOO-

This seemed very amateurish and the illustrations are basically useless. I am a seasoned crocheter, but if I were new I'd give up trying to decipher this. There are so many free resources available online and many better written books available. Please don't waste your money.

I've been crocheting for about 20 years now, but I believe I would have been able to teach myself to crochet with this series of books. Also included are some helpful charts for converting metric to US hook sizes, as well as a chart showing what care diagrams mean (such as "machine wash and dry," "dry clean only," etc.All of the books have cute patterns to get you started & keep you going. I would recommend this set for anyone interested in crochet - from beginner to expert. I especially like the pattern for "barefoot sandals."

39 of 39 people found the following review helpful. Invaluable for Classicists By D. B. Killings Like all Loeb Classics, this edition is presented with the ancient greek text on the left page, and its english translation on the right, giving students of classical greek an easy cross-reference. The translations are easy to read and not too difficult to comprehend, while still at the same time accurately rendered (unlike many Loeb translations, which are frequently too literal a translation to be readable). But what makes this book of keen interest is not the attention paid to Hesiod's Theogony and Works & Days, nor the anonymous "Homeric" Hymns, but rather to its meticulous compedium of the lesser-known works it presents. Especially, for those works for which no complete version has survived, only fragments and occassional (later) commentaries. In this volume you discover a wonderful epic poem called The Catalogue of Women and Eoie, of which only about half survives scattered among a hundred or so fragments. You also discover The Shield of Hercules, which some attribute to Hesiod. But most fascinating of all are the fragments of the Epic Cycle, poems written as a sort of "history" of the Greek people, of which the two great works by Homer (The Iliad and The Odyssey) were the most well-known and the only ones to survive intact. As far as I know, this is the only volume in english which gathers all of these fragments together and attempts to sort them out in some kind of order; for those interested in the ancient epics, this alone makes the edition worth the price. This book is a sobering reminder of just how much has been lost over the centuries, of just how little actually has survived. Sadly, this is now probably the closest anyone will ever get to being able to read The Cypriad or The Melampodia again, and that's a shame.

By A Customer Sometimes when consulting the Loeb Library for a translation of a greek text one finds a version wildly different than the original. This volume of the Loeb niether betrays the text, nor translates with arcane vocabulary (e.g. thou, thee, etc.). All in all, a very useful tool.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Great text, but a poor look to the page... By Demetria Nanos This paperback edition is printed in a font so small as to make reading a chore and aggravating, rather than the pleasure that reading truly is. The text is excellent, as one would expect of a (former?) Loeb edition, but even a young person needs a magnifying glass or to hold it close to the face to read. I would rather pay more money and be able to read the book more easily. I regret buying this edition and should have hunted out an older one that has a bit larger type. There is no splash page with publisher's info, ISBN, font type, where printed, etc. It is a good value for the price, but an edition I do not recommend to anyone with eyeglasses or anyone who needs better information for citations..

Includes: 15 Colored Illustrations and Biography Orthodoxy (1908) is a book by G. K. Chesterton that has become a classic of Christian apologetics. Chesterton considered this book a companion to his other work, Heretics. In the book's preface Chesterton states the purpose is to "attempt an explanation, not of whether the Christian faith can be believed, but of how he personally has come to believe it." In it, Chesterton presents an original view of Christian religion. He sees it as the answer to natural human needs, the "answer to a riddle" in his own words, and not simply as an arbitrary truth received from somewhere outside the boundaries of human experience. The book was written when Chesterton was an Anglican. He converted to Catholicism 14 years later. The title, Orthodoxy, is meant to avoid such sectarian questions.

Amazon.com Review If G.K. Chesterton's Orthodoxy: The Romance of Faith is, as he called it, a "slovenly autobiography," then we need more slobs in the world. This quirky, slender book describes how Chesterton came to view orthodox Catholic Christianity as the way to satisfy his personal emotional needs, in a way that would also allow him to live happily in society. Chesterton argues that people in western society need a life of "practical romance, the combination of something that is strange with something that is secure. We need so to view the world as to combine an idea of wonder and an idea of welcome." Drawing on such figures as Fra Angelico, George Bernard Shaw, and St. Paul to make his points, Chesterton argues that submission to ecclesiastical authority is the way to achieve a good and balanced life. The whole book is written in a style that is as majestic and down-to-earth as C.S. Lewis at his best. The final chapter, called "Authority and the Adventurer," is especially persuasive. It's hard to imagine a reader who will not close the book believing, at least for the moment, that the Church will make you free. --Michael Joseph Gross

Chesterton decided to write this book as a companion volume to his book HERETICS. Since HERETICS had criticised contemporary philosophies, ORTHODOXY was written to present an alternative viewpoint, and is therefore both affirmative in tone and autobiographical in many places. A sampling of his chapter titles gives some idea of Chesterton's sense of fun as well as his unusual approach to the matter of Christianity. Chapter one is "In Defense of Everything Else" (one pictures Chesterton with a whimsical, impish smile on his face as he wrote this). There are also chapters on "The Suicide of Thought", "The Ethics of Elfland" (a really superb chapter), "The Maniac", and "The Paradoxes of Christianity". In this easily readable book (only 160 pages in the small paperback edition), Chesterton shows that theological reflections and philosophical ruminations need be neither boring nor incomprehensible. This was jolly good fun to read, being both funny and intellectually stimulating. Highly recommended.

Reading it I found that I was laughing one minute and seriously blown away the next. I am not a Christian, but this book gave me hope that maybe there is a place for a logic and faith based Christianity which is both orthodox and stronger than a fearful fundamentalism. I like the fact that Chesterton opposes his critics while for the most part honestly respecting them as intelligent people. It's the sign of a man secure in his ideas.I would recommend this book to any other failed pagans out there. Would also be a good read for any agnostic interested in the role of imagination in simple, thoughtful living.

81 of 88 people found the following review helpful. A brilliant defence of the Christian faith. By A Customer This book is Chesterton's defence of orthodox Christianity. It is partly autobiographical, in the sense that Chesterton describes various insights into the nature of reality, and various puzzles about reality, and then shows how (to his astonishment) the Christian faith accounts for the insights and answers the puzzles. The following quote expresses this idea:"This, therefore, is, in conclusion, my reason for accepting the religion and not merely the scattered and secular truths out of the religion. I do it because the thing has not merely told this truth or that truth, but has revealed itself as a truth-telling thing. All other philosophies say the things that plainly seem to be true; only this philosophy has again and again said the thing that does not seem to be true, but is true. Alone of all creeds it is convincing where it is not attractive; it turns out to be right, like my father in the garden."But don't just take my word for it! You can read it online from the G.K.Chesterton web page and then buy the book!
