This book reads easily and held my interest throughout. I had to look up some of the references to people and events but did not feel that detracted from my experience of reading this book. I found my sympathetic reaction to Mrs. Pankhurst's justifications for advocating property damage disturbing as I am normally opposed to violence as a means of political expression. I was relieved to read that the group took pains to avoid injuring people. I hope that is true although I am sure that unintended injuries must have resulted from some of their activities. Overall, I got to learn some history, a window into Mrs. Pankhurst's views, experiences and values and a sense of what it felt like to live in that time. I was also challenged to look at my own values. The Kindle edition that I read was free so the only cost to me was time: a very worthwhile investment.

It's a copy of the original manuscript, warts and all. It's really good reading. Gives a true insight as to what she had to actually go through to help get women the vote.

Do You Remember Your Dreams? Where do we go at night while dreaming? Are our dreams as real as our waking life, and when we dream. . . who are we? Do we see others we know in our present life, or are there visions that seem familiar, but not? Is there something going on while we sleep that goes beyond random thought, and if so, what is the purpose? H. T. Manogue's Newest Novel, Black Orchid Night, takes the reader on one woman's journey through the hallways of time. She discovers that her dreams are not just unconscious hallucinations, but factual trips through the uncharted territory of her psyche. Her dreams are portals through which her greater consciousness can express itself. .

Black Orchid Night, by H. T. Manogue

From the Author As Shakespeare pointed out, we are such stuff as dreams are made on. We achieve so many things while dreaming, but we don't remember most of our accomplishments. For centuries, our dream reality has been a victim of antiquated beliefs and religious misconceptions. Hence, our dreams are shrouded in mystery. I've been studying the dream reality for the last seven years, and I've discovered some interesting facts about our dream experiences. The first fact is we don't understand the complete nature of our consciousness, so we say, "It's only a dream." But dreams are not meant to be tucked away on the discount rack in our consciousness. We don't realize it, but we ignore part of ourselves in order to function physically in the ongoing expansion of the human species. We believe we are built that way. We fail to see we are in the process of becoming what we already are, and we certainly overlook the undeniable fact that dreams set the tone for that becoming. Dreams exist in levels, just like this reality. Our wakeful levels of reality are measured in time sequences, but there is no time sequence in dreams, so it's difficult to make sense of them and put them in order. Dreams have their own sense of order. On one level, dreams mix wakeful experiences with other probabilities, and we experience a mish-mash of dream events. On another level our conscious beliefs and innate beliefs are homogenized, and we experience people, places and events in unusual ways. These dream levels help us with insights and artful expressions. On another level, we enter the spacious presence of consciousness where all experiences are formed. These dreams experiences are a variety pack filled with waking probabilities that we lay out for physical manifestation. Some are manifested; some are not. Once we enter the fourth level, we wander through the hallways of consciousness and tap into the pulse of the soul. In this hallway, more levels of our dream reality are experienced. We live life as the soul lives it. We are the soul and all its counterparts. This consciousness journey takes us to the reality of the soul.In dreams, the ego is dormant. We free ourselves from our waking focus, so we have the ability to function without a body as we wander through these vast never-ending dream realities. Our body remains in one place, but we still sense the sensations created by our body.We remember some of these levels as we travel though them while dreaming. There are endless levels, and an endless amount of no time to experience them. Our dreams never end. We just move in and out of them, just like we move in and out of this reality. The interesting thing about dreaming is we sense that we don't just live one lifetime. We begin to realize how it feels it to live in multiple lifetimes.Lucid dreamers have the ability to remember portions of dreams, and some of these dreamers also have the talent to dream at will. These people are not different than any other person in terms of psychic gifts or supernatural powers. What these people have is an open channel to other realities. They allow their consciousness to move multidimensionally using practice, a knowing attitude, and an open-ended belief structure. We all could remember where we go in dreams if we used those inner gifts. We rarely use them by objective design, but we always use them subjectively. Black Orchid Night is the story of one of these lucid dreamers. She accepts what she experiences in dreams as another form of reality. Her waking world becomes a schoolroom filled with a new set of choices and probabilities. The lucid dreamer in this story discovers the connection we have with each other no matter what segment of the social ladder they represent. We all have been nasty characters, lonely and depressed individuals that make some really bad choices. The dreamer in this story is surrounded by the anguish of family dynamics and associations that can be considered sleazy and harmfully narcissistic. She begins to understand that she is more than one body and brain in one particular time. She finds another portion of herself living as someone with different skin color, and in a different time period. She realizes that skin color and ethnic backgrounds are choices that produce lesson for soul expansion. She interacts with this particular counterpart, and that connection influences present moment choices for both individuals. It's not necessary to believe you are more than one individual in order to be another individual. We are wired that way by our multidimensional soul. We will still function and expand from the action of the soul regardless of our ignorance. Our mission as individuals is to experience our desires and expand from them. We are part of the creative activity I call the soul. The soul doesn't reincarnate. Reincarnation implies time. The soul creates without time. What we experience and what the character in this story experiences is one incarnation of the many incarnations that the soul expresses for creative expansion. The

The ideas and concepts that are presented in this book are very real to me. I am always impressed with Hal Manogue's creations of literature. Each masterpiece gets better every time. This particular book allowed me to see my self in character. The main character Fiona draws you into her world so far that you can't help but become a part of her journey. This book was well written and laid out. As a writer and author myself I am always grateful to come across work which insights me from a writing perspective and that intrigues me from an entertaining perspective. This book did both. I was even able to highlight pointers as I read, to go back, to take it all in again. Overall this book like many of H.T. Manogue's books is a great book. I would suggest it as great read for anyone who is adventurous and has an open mind. There is a lot to gain from this literature if only you look deeper inside what is essentially presented before you. Loved it!

Wonderful Miss Marple short stories By Shirley Schwartz No one can do characterizations like Dame Christie, and she can even do these remarkably well within the confines of a short story. This little book of Miss Marple short stories is a wonderful cap to the entire Miss Marple series. I had read some of them individually, but there were some I had not read before, and I enjoyed them all. My own particular favourite though was "The Case of the Perfect Maid" (an oxymoron if there ever was one). It is remarkable how Ms. Christie can typecast each of her wonderful characters so quickly, and provide us with tricky and intricate mysteries at the same time.

I thought about the books that got me hooked on reading mysteries as a young person, and I knew that something from Agatha Christie was IT! I was so pleased to find this 3-book collection. It is so reasonably priced, and Miss Marple is just wonderful! If anyone wants books that are so well-written, try these. The Kindle is such a wonderful gadget! Why hasn't it been around years before? My bookshelves wouldn't be so packed!!

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Nine stories By Damaskcat This is a collection of nine short stories, one of which does not feature Miss Marple. I always think crime short stories must be one of the most difficult genres to write as there is not space to develop character or show a police investigation. These stories make use of someone telling a story - often to Miss Marple. In one case it is her doctor who writes a story and gives it to her to cheer her up when she's feeling down. Naturally she works out what has happened.I enjoyed all these stories and was particularly taken with `The Dressmaker's Doll', which is really quite spooky and the reader gets a real sense of the possibly evil propensities of the doll concerned. I also liked the last story in the collection - `Greenshaw's Folly' which features a particularly ingenious murder.

Oscar Wilde (16 October 1854 - 30 November 1900) was an extremely popular Irish writer and poet who wrote in different forms throughout his career and became one of London's most popular playwrights in the early 1890s. Today he is remembered for his epigrams, plays and the strange circumstances of his imprisonment, followed by his early death. At the turn of the 1890s, Wilde refined his ideas about the supremacy of art in a series of dialogues and essays, and incorporated themes of decadence, duplicity, and beauty into his only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray (1890). The opportunity to construct aesthetic details precisely, and combine them with larger social themes, drew Wilde to write drama. He wrote Salome (1891) in French in Paris but it was refused a license. Unperturbed, Wilde produced four society comedies in the early 1890s, which made him one of the most successful playwrights of late Victorian London. Wilde reached the height of his fame and success with The Importance of Being Earnest (1895).

Review Shows how a good adaptation of a classic can speak to the present age. --AudioFile

About the Author Oscar Wilde (1854 - 1900) was an Anglo-Irish playwright, novelist, poet, short story writer and Freemason. Known for his barbed and clever wit, he was one of the most successful playwrights of late Victorian London, and one of the greatest celebrities of his day.

From AudioFile The L.A. Theatre Works performs plays tailored for a radio format before live audiences. The works are treats for the ear: Each features first-rate performances, rich but not overdone sound effects, evocative background music, expert engineering and the immediacy of an audience's live responses. AN IDEAL HUSBAND, Oscar Wilde's 1895 comedy, shows how a good adaptation of a classic play can speak to the present age. Martin Jarvis and director Michael Hackett have slightly streamlined Wilde's play about a rising politician with a secret in his past whose efforts to prevent exposure call attention to the hypocrisy of holding our leaders to higher standards than we ourselves live by. The large cast handles the witty dialogue with delicacy: Jacqueline Bisset charmingly plays one of dramatic literature's most polite blackmailers. The insouciance of the performances emphasizes rather than detracts from the play's serious theme of social hypocrisy. G.H. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

45 of 47 people found the following review helpful. Great Collection By Bill R. Moore This magnificent compilation has three Plato writings: "Apology," "Crito," and "Phaedo." Though apparently early works and not as complex or philosophically influential as later ones, they are immensely important in portraying Socrates' trial and death. They are our clearest picture of the historical Socrates and would be invaluable for this alone. Indeed, I have read hundreds - perhaps thousands - of books, and this is one of my ten or so favorites, mostly because of how moving the depiction of the great man's last days is. The story of Socrates' Apology and last moments is part of world literature's very fabric, an immortal part of Western cultural heritage. Anyone who wants to learn about Socrates should start here. However, the works have great value even aside from this; a few have indeed questioned their historical veracity. This does not affect their philosophical, literary, and political worth, which is of the highest, making the book doubly essential."Apology" is Plato's least philosophical and most unrepresentative work but arguably his most important and is among many readers' favorites, including mine. The book's title is misleading in that this is prose rather than dialogue; it purports to be Socrates' self-defense at his trial. It is historically priceless if so, as it gives his last public statements and some background about his life and the lead up to the trial. Even if not, it is of immense worth as a passionate, sound defense of individualism and free speech; its timeless evocation of these all-important concepts is forever associated with Socrates and the main reason he has been immortalized. The work also piercingly examines the often vast law/conscience gap and is thus an early higher law document. Finally, it is a sort of mini-dialogue in itself touching on and in several ways tying up classic Socrates/Plato themes like the nature of piety and goodness, responsibility toward the gods and the state, interpersonal relations, and life vs. death issues. It sums up Socrates and perhaps Plato better than any other work."Crito" is a possibly partly historical account of the title character visiting Socrates in jail to inform him that he is able to escape via bribe; Socrates famously says that he accepts his sentence and argues down contrary pleas. This gives incredible potential insight into Socrates, in many ways telling us more about his character and thought than a full biography ever could. Again, though, it transcends this philosophically and otherwise and is particularly relevant politically. It also examines the law/conscience gap and gives further background on Socrates but is notable above all as a very early example of the social contract theory of government. This is an astonishing example of how advanced Plato was, as the theory is generally considered to have been founded by Thomas Hobbes nearly a millennium later. Even more amazingly, it is put forth more clearly and persuasively here than perhaps anywhere else, making the dialogue essential for anyone interested in political theory."Phaedo" ostensibly details Socrates' last moments, including his last look at his wife and child, his last dialogue, his last words to friends, and his actual death. A large part of Socrates' image comes from this, and its potential historical value is inconceivable, though its historicity can easily be doubted since the work itself strongly suggests that Plato was not there. Even so, it is likely accurate in regard to the things that really matter and certainly a fine account of how it very well could have been. It is extremely moving; shot through with pathos, it is one of the most affecting things I have ever read. One can surely not read it without being overcome by emotion; I can hardly even think of it without misty eyes. Anyone who respects and admires this central Western civilization figure will be profoundly touched; his famous last words seem comic out of context but are very much otherwise here, telling us much about Socrates and moving us yet further. This would be one of the greatest works of all-time if it had no other aspect, but it is also a fine dialogue appropriately dealing mostly with death. Plato examines perennial questions like the soul's immortality and metempsychosis very thoroughly and thought-provokingly, and the conclusion - unsurprisingly, given the circumstances - has uncharacteristic certainty. It may not convince our cynical, empiricist, science-loving, twentieth century-surviving age, but the argument is certainly well-made and in many ways admirable. The dialogue touches on other important subjects also and is generally seen as the culmination of Plato's early, Socrates-centered thought. It is important to realize that these four works were not originally published together, but the trial and death connection means they are often collected. There are many such editions, but this is among the least expensive and one of the most widely available, making it ideal for most. That said, some editions - e.g., Dover's Trial and Death of Socrates, which is even cheaper - also have "Euthyphro." The ever-important translation issue must also be kept in mind. It goes without saying that anyone who cares about intellectual issues, especially applied ones, must know Plato, as should anyone who wants to be even basically well-read. However, this is far easier said than done for most; he is so different from what now passes for literature, to say nothing of pop culture, that he is virtually inaccessible to general readers. Yet the importance of persevering cannot be overemphasized; the payoff is well worth the effort. As nearly always in such cases, reading him becomes far easier after the initial difficulty; no attentive reader will ever think Plato easy reading, but he is utterly absorbing once we get used to his style. He has a near-poetic beauty that all agree has never even been remotely approached in philosophy, and such mesmerizing prose is rare in any genre. His dialogues are an incredible form at once intellectually and aesthetically pleasing - an inspired combination that has perhaps never been bettered; many have appropriated it, but none have matched it. All this means that picking the right translation is probably more important with Plato than any other writer. For the average reader, the more recent, the better is generally true, though older translations like W. H. D. Rouse's and Benjamin Jowett's are still very accessible. The important thing is to read Plato in some form, and those who happen on a translation that does not work for them should keep trying until their mind opens in a truly new way - and once done, it will never close again. All told, though this edition is not the best for all, anyone wanting an inexpensive Plato/Socrates primer could hardly do better.

At the moment I write this Amazon does not offer this title for free in Europe. The printed version has 153 pages, app. 53000 words. There is very good review of this book by Bill R. Moore on the Amazon site, so I will only add an example of the style of writing of Plato. The first 2 phrases of 'The Apology of Socrates' are:I know not, O Athenians! how far you have been influenced by my accusersfor my part, in listening to them I almost forgot myself, so plausiblewere their arguments however, so to speak, they have said nothing true. But of the many falsehoods which they uttered I wondered at one of themespecially, that in which they said that you ought to be on your guardlest you should be deceived by me, as being eloquent in speech.[...]

In this beautifully photographed view into how Palm Beachers really live, ‘Remodelista’ and self-described layman Cultural Anthropologist, Carolina Fernandez brings her business acumen and artistic sensibilities to unearth its art and design scene, and to help others feel its rapidly rising heartbeat. By exploring the visual and material culture in which one lives, and by surrounding oneself with things that possess beauty and meaning, Fernandez believes that one adds deeper layers and further dimension to the human experience.

Palm Beach. These two little words conjure images of the “veritable paradise” described by Henry Flagler, and of the official destination point for the world’s wealthiest. What few realize is that Palm Beach and its surrounding neighborhoods hold more material goods in more high-quality dealers, consignment and thrift shops than any other defined geographic area in the country, per capita. Not only is the sheer volume palpable; the astounding quality begs further exploration of how, exactly, Palm Beachers design and decorate their homes. A tectonic shift in aesthetic has swept the island, enlivening the atmosphere with new-found electricity. Fernandez examines this new design landscape and distills it  into easily digestible bites. Helping homeowners understand how to infuse Palm Beach style by mixing treasured inherited objects with serendipitous and re-imagined finds in creating their own unique design calculus meets her anthropological mission head-on.

As a room-by-room guide, distinct design preferences ubiquitous to the Palm Beaches, as well as its unique palette, patterns and textures, are explored, with  homage to the demands, as well as the revitalizing qualities, of the ‘Sun, Sea & Air.’ With more than 200 hundred full-color photographs and rich text, she walks you inside twenty-two homes, fifteen local shops, and gardens and galleries to help you translate the light, energy, and freshness of this island lifestyle into your own home, and  inspires you to design and decorate—and indeed, to live!—with exuberance. This is the design philosophy behind Palm Beach Panache.  The philosophy which she shares with you and under which she proudly, happily, joyfully lives.

Great handbook to having a unique home By abbey4049 An in-depth look at ways to create that Palm Beach look by checking out all the antique & consignment shops to find those one of a kind special pieces that make your decorating extra special and unique. I think the author's decision to use the paper stock she chose only further exemplifies and supports the feeling of taking something old and giving it new life. I think the dull coat paper makes me feel that these decorating ideas are achievable and that a slick glossy paper would have been to phony. This book isn't just about pretty pictures, it's about how to create your own unique look. Carolina Fernandez has a thumbs up from me!

You are the children of Old Mother England, on both sides of the Atlantic; you form the majority of buyers and borrowers of novels; and you judge of works of fiction by certain inbred preferences, which but slightly influence the other great public of readers on the continent of Europe. The two qualities in fiction which hold the highest rank in your estimation are: Character and Humour. Incident and dramatic situation only occupy the second place in your favour. A novel that tells no story, or that blunders perpetually in trying to tell a story—a novel so entirely devoid of all sense of the dramatic side of human life, that not even a theatrical thief can find anything in it to steal—will nevertheless be a work that wins (and keeps) your admiration, if it has Humour which dwells on your memory, and characters which enlarge the circle of your friends.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Still controversial after all these years By Richard Ferrie Critics of Wilkie Collins like to say that his later novels are overly didactic and indicate signs of increased drug use. HEART AND SCIENCE is one of those usually so labeled. Because it is an anti-vivisection novel, perhaps the foremost of the 19th century, it is regarded by some (especially those who think that an experiment is stronger if a thousand animals are killed in the process rather than, say, a mere hundred) and often dismissed as sentimental and therefore second-rate. This is hardly the case. HEART AND SCIENCE is a strong, well-structured novel with good characterization and coherent development; unfortunately, Collins decided readers would only purchase the book if the primary plot involved a love story. Perhaps overly-romantic, yes; sentimental, no. While THE MOONSTONE remains Collins' masterpiece, one of the finest pop-to-literature cross-over novels in English, HEART AND SCIENCE deserves to be considered one of the author's best.

“The Secret Sharer” is a short story by Joseph Conrad written in 1909, first published in Harper’s Magazine in 1910, and as a book in the short-story collection Twixt Land and Sea (1912). The story was filmed as a segment of the 1952 film Face to Face. The Secret Sharer was adapted to a one-act play in 1969 by C. R. (Chuck) Wobbe. The play was published in 1969 by the Dramatic Publishing Company. A new film, Secret Sharer, inspired by the novella and directed by Peter Fudakowski, was released in the UK in June 2014. The story takes place on a sailing ship in the Gulf of Siam (now the Gulf of Thailand), at the start of a voyage with cargo for Britain. The date is probably in the 1880s (when Conrad was at sea himself). In common with many of Conrad’s stories, it is narrated in the first person. The narrator is the ship’s young captain, and he is unfamiliar with both his ship and his crew, having joined the ship only a fortnight earlier. He is unsure of his ability to exert his authority over the officers and crew who have been together for some time, and makes the point several times that he is the “stranger” on board. After being towed down-river (presumably from Bangkok) by a steam tug, the ship is left at anchor near a group of small barren islands a few miles off shore, waiting for wind to begin its voyage. An incoming ship is anchored similarly a couple of miles away, awaiting a tug to go upriver. That night, the captain, being restless, unusually takes the watch. As the only man on deck in the small hours, he sees that a man has swum up to the ship’s side. The naked swimmer is hesitant to talk or come on board, but seems pleased to discover he is speaking to the captain. Once on board he and the captain find a natural rapport, almost as if he, Leggatt, were the captain’s other self; especially as the captain has now fetched some of his own clothes that Leggatt is now wearing.

About the Author Joseph Conrad was a Polish novelist who lived most of his life in Britain and didn't learn English until age 21. The young Conrad lived an adventurous life involving gunrunning and political conspiracy, and apparently had a disastrous love affair that plunged him into despair. He served 16 years in the merchant navy.In 1894, at age 36, Conrad reluctantly gave up the sea, partly because of poor health and partly because he had decided on a literary career.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Webster’s edition of this classic is organized to expose the reader to a maximum number of difficult and potentially ambiguous English words. Rare or idiosyncratic words and expressions are given lower priority compared to "difficult, yet commonly used" words. Rather than supply a single translation, many words are translated for a variety of meanings in Spanish, allowing readers to better grasp the ambiguity of English, and avoid them using the notes as a pure translation crutch. Having the reader decipher a word’s meaning within context serves to improve vocabulary retention and understanding. Each page covers words not already highlighted on previous pages. If a difficult word is not translated on a page, chances are that it has been translated on a previous page.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Leggat = The Captain: True or False? By Martin Asiner In THE SECRET SHARER, Joseph Conrad posits an interesting choice for the Captain protagonist: should he follow maritime law and return a self-confessed murderer to his ship to face justice or should he allow his personal feelings to intrude and harbor a fugitive and let him escape? On the surface, this seems like a fairly routine choice, but in the world of Joseph Conrad no choices are ever easy. Readers who come to this novella from HEART OF DARKNESS are well aware that Conrad likes to place hesitancies in the minds of readers, most of which are couched in symbolic language which suggest a tapping into their psyches. In the case of the Captain, his choice is confounded by his perception of the man Leggatt who climbs aboard his ship. As the Captain sees Leggatt, he sees a man who is described in terms of one who is physically incomplete. Leggatt appears to be headless and as he ascends the rope from water to deck, Conrad's imagery suggests a watery re-birth. The Captain sees Leggatt and in the pages that follow calls him terms that circle back to himself: my double, my secret sharer, and my other self. It is clear that in Leggatt the Captain sees more than just a little bit of himself. They went to the same school with the Captain graduating only a few years prior. At this point, Conrad suggests that the Captain's decision not to hand Leggatt over to justice may not be simply a matter of identifying with Leggatt on a superficial level in that they merely share some common traits. With the Captain's heavily symbolic language, Conrad probes more deeply in the Captain's psyche and by extension in the reader's psyche by suggesting that the Captain's willingness to protect Leggatt even at the cost of his own career and the safety of his ship and crew lies in his subconscious linking of himself to Leggatt. For the Captain to hand over Leggatt to the law and to possible execution would be tantamount to being complicit in his own doom. To further complicate matters, on an even more subconscious level, Conrad raises the possibility that there is no Leggatt at all and that their entire relationship, replete with conversation, mutual interaction, and hiding Leggatt in his bathroom may have existed only within the Captain's mind. If this latter interpretation holds water, then in order for the Captain to maintain the illusion of Leggatt's existence, he had to act as if Leggatt truly existed, even to the point of endangering his ship by approaching too close to shore to allow Leggatt to jump off and swim to safety to a nearby isle. Conrad leaves the reader to ponder the state of mind of the Captain. When the Captain sees a floating hat at the end when Leggatt has jumped ship, that hat serves to remind the Captain and possibly the reader as well that the difference between reality and illusion may be no more significant than whether an abandoned hat floats or sinks in a stormy sea.

Even though it is really short there is a large amount of importance in every line. Whether its symbolism or some type of hidden meaning its there and it is what makes the book great. Conrad puts you in the mind of of his characters and you seem to experience what they are going through. It gives you the sense that you are right there on the boat with the captain and his hidden passenger. You feel as if your the only one in on there little secret and if they are found out you will be too. Conrad then puts so much description into his characters you can actually get a feeling of what they look like and the way they act. The similarities between the two main characters is so great that at points you can't see a difference between them. This constantly keeps you on your toes and thinking about what is going on. What makes the book though is the symbolism and how much meaning each little thing holds. You can read a paragraph and just take it s a regular story or you can think more into it and it holds so much more. It almost completely changes the way you look at what is happening. This book is definitely worth reading. It makes you appreciate the genius that some people hold in there writing abilities. You will come out of this book with a changed perspective on the way things happen in life.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. creepy, wonderful By David Myers Conrad knew how to pack a punch in a small number of pages. He knew how to evoke dread. And he knew how to tell a story of the sea. It's not as involved or incredible as Heart of Darkness (but few things written in the English language have ever been)-- this little story about a stowaway is tightly told. Still, it will leave you with an appreciation of the abilities of a master.

Includes: 15 Colored Illustrations and Biography Don Quixote (/ˌdɒn ˈkwɪksət/[1] or /ˌdɒn kiːˈhoʊtiː/; Spanish: [ˈdoŋ kiˈxote] ( listen)), fully titled The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha (Spanish: El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha), is a Spanish novel by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. Published in two volumes, in 1605 and 1615, Don Quixote is considered one of the most influential works of literature from the Spanish Golden Age and the entire Spanish literary canon. As a founding work of modern Western literature and one of the earliest canonical novels, it regularly appears high on lists of the greatest works of fiction ever published, such as the Bokklubben World Library collection that cites Don Quixote as authors' choice for the "best literary work ever written".[2] It follows the adventures of a nameless hidalgo who reads so many chivalric romances that he loses his sanity and decides to set out to revive chivalry, undo wrongs, and bring justice to the world, under the name Don Quixote.

From Publishers Weekly This imposing volume presents the first part of the quest by the beloved Don, whose name stands for chivalry and courage--"The Impossible Dream." The book's heavy stock, binding and design all impart an air of style and prestige, reinforced by Bogin's suave translation, which makes good use of abundant dialogue. (The phraseology and vocabulary, however--"erstwhile," "apothecary," "coherence"--will be beyond younger readers.) Though the paintings by Spanish artist Boix are masterfully executed, some lack the sweep expected from this panoramic work; much of the imagery is somewhat pallid, both in tone and emotional impact. And, though the architectural details, period apparel and scenery are all richly evocative, the characters themselves are often small in scale and dwarfed by their stunning surroundings. Nevertheless, the presence of an elegantly produced, picture book version of this classic merits attention and applause. All ages. Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal Grade 5 Up-- Cervantes's Don Quixote, the moniker and persona adopted by the addled Senor Quijada , who has read a few too many chivalric romances, hardly needs introduction to adults. However, most young people will have hardly heard him mentioned, much less had any firsthand contact with this larger-than-life literary creation. Bogin has taken some of the more involving, outrageous, and well-known adventures of the knight errant and his squire, Sancho Panza, and put them together into a relatively brief narrative that nonetheless is strikingly true to the tone and style of the Spanish original. Her prose, lively and at times employing modern vernacular to good effect, does full justice to Cervantes's mad Knight of the Sad Countenance. It begs reading aloud, and may well start discussion and contemplation. Boix's illustrations are delicate, detailed, gold-washed watercolors that create a kind of fairy-tale ambience. They will grab readers' attention and imaginations and direct anyone picking the book up to delve into it and to find out what's going on. Taken as a whole, this is a lovely job of bookmaking, providing an examplary introduction to a classic work. --Ann Welton, Thomas Academy, Kent, Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review “A more profound and powerful work than this is not to be met with…[It is] the final and greatest utterance of the human mind.” –Fyodor Dostoevsky“It can be said that all prose fiction is a variation on the theme of Don Quixote.” –Lionel Trilling“[Don Quixote is] the first and best of all novels, which nevertheless is more than a novel.” –Harold Bloom“When Don Quixote went out into the world, that world turned into a mystery before his eyes. That is the legacy of the first European novel to the entire subsequent history of the novel. The novelist teaches its reader to comprehend the world as a question.” –Milan Kundera

By Philip Haldeman Edith Grossman's is the hot new translation, but there may be a tendency to confer too much praise on a fresh reading. From what I have sampled, I have no doubt of Grossman's excellence, but this is not the "definitive" DQ (no one's is), and frankly, after some comparison of the early chapters, I've decided to spend my time with Burton Raffel's translation, now only a decade old. Raffel sometimes opts for a colloquial word or two, but it's never jarring, and his overall style seems not only less pretentious to me than Grossman's, but a superior combination of a modern reading with a traditional "tone." Tone and style are important, and Raffel sometimes makes Grossman seem too abstract or fussy, though this is difficult to describe. Raffel's phrasing is more focused and vigorous than Grossman's--though both are said to be accurate. Let me offer a couple of examples that shifted me toward Raffel:Grossman:"Some claim that his family name was Quixada, or Quexada, for there is a certain amount of disagreement among the authors who write of this matter, although reliable conjecture seems to indicate that his name was Quexana. But this does not matter very much to our story; in its telling there is absolutely no deviation from the truth."Raffel:"It's said his family name was Quijada, or maybe Quesada: there's some disagreement among the writers who've discussed the matter. But more than likely his name was really Quejana. Not that this makes much difference in our story; it's just important to tell things as faithfully as you can."(Notice how Raffel makes immediately clear in the last sentence what Grossman so literally translates.)Grossman:"His fantasy filled with everything he had read in his books, enchantments as well as combats, battles, challenges, wounds, courtings, loves, torments, and other impossible foolishness, and he became so convinced in his imagination of the truth of all the countless grandiloquent and false inventions he read that for him no history in the world was truer. He would say that El Cid Ruy Diaz had been a very good knight but could not compare to Amadis, the Knight of the Blazing Sword, who with a single backstroke cut two ferocious and colossal giants in half."Raffel:"He filled his imagination full to bursting with everything he read in his books, from witchcraft to duels, battles, challenges, wounds, flirtations, love affairs, anguish, and impossible foolishness, packing it all so firmly into his head that these sensational schemes and dreams became the literal truth and, as far as he was concerned, there were no more certain histories anywhere on earth. He'd explain that Cid Ruy Diaz had been a very good knight, but simply couldn't be compared to the Knight of the Flaming Sword, who with one backhand stroke had cut in half two huge, fierce giants."Notice that Grossman is rather fussy-sounding in the phrase: "countless grandiloquent and false inventions he read that for him no history in the world was truer." Compare with Raffel, who always seems to solve little problems like this with charm, precision, and even a little wry swagger that's so appropriate to Cervantes' intent. So my advice is to seek out both of these new translations and spend a little time with each before deciding. Don't take others' opinions that Grossman's has superseded Raffel's. Grossman avoids some of the more colloquial English one may find in Raffel, and this may please snobs, but the accuracy of Raffel's translation is not in question, and overall he seems to me to have done the best job.

I'm not sure what Cervantes would have made of some of Faulkner's more troublesome work, but the world has designated Don Quixote the Father of the Modern Novel and perhaps the greatest novel ever. I'm a fan of this book and a habitual (some would say neurotic) comparer of translations. Since I don't read of speak Spanish, I have to rely on the English translations that have been published. There are three that are worthwhile: Ormsby's, Samuel Putnam's and now Edith Grossman's. Grossman, who is the translator of Garcia Marquez's books into English, has produced a translation that's contemporary and authentic--somehow, not an oxymoron. It has a fresher feel than Putnam's (the translation Nabokov used when teaching the book), though I wouldn't say it supplants Putnam. If you're looking for a copy of Don Quixote in English, Grossman's translation is a good first choice. She manages to maintain the feel of the language Cervantes wrote in (as far as I can tell) yet her translation, as the NY Times reviewer noted, is as readable as the latest novel from Philip Roth. You can't go wrong with Putnam or Grossman, but on this one, I have to give the nod to Grossman.

Quintessential Masterpiece of European Literature By Adam Dukovich I have read this book both in English and Spanish, and I can honestly say that it loses very little of its power, wit or message in translation. For all those who have considered reading this book, here are a few good reasons: this book is a very nuanced look at escapism and identity, a wonderful parody of knight stories, along with being a rousing (and very funny) adventure centering around the titular hero, a man who reads one too many books about knighthood and chivalry and decides to become a knight-errant himself. After recruiting a sidekick and choosing a lady to woo per narrative convention, he sets out to conquer the forces of evil, which include, among other things, giant windmills and rogue "knights". Cervantes' insight and ability to parody were both ahead of his time, and in a time where escapism and voyeurism are well and thriving, it is not difficult to imagine someone watching too many TV shows and believing they're a wild west outlaw or what-have-you. A very fascinating experience, and it works well in any language. Highly recommended.

Elisabetta Celestino, a brilliant young archaeologist at work in Rome’s ancient catacombs, has discovered a unique pattern of astrological symbols on an underground wall. She is devastated when the Vatican refuses to support her excavation project. Ten years later, a cave-in damages the vault, and a shocking discovery is made. Following a traumatic event, Elisabetta has left archaeology behind for the serenity of prayer and teaching, but the young nun unexpectedly finds herself in a race to solve the secret of the catacomb. Moving between present-day Europe, 1st-century Rome, and Elizabethan England, The Devil Will Come is an exhilarating tale of a battle between good and evil that has been fought in the shadows through the centuries and across continents—and that both sides are willing to kill to keep secret.
