Clark I was delighted to flip through the pages of this book because there were so many items that were refreshingly new. There were no tired old "granny" type items that are too abundant in the marketplace. I already made one sweater and was thrilled to give it as a gift.Only constructive criticism is: I would enjoy seeing each piece drawn (with measurements) prior to joining them. I am an intermediate-level crocheter, and this would greatly assist my skill level. And just because I was thrilled with this book, I purchased another by the same author. I so look forward to many fun hours crocheting.

By Rocky Top Gal This was my first crochet for baby book and overall I think it deserves 4 stars however it would have been great if the yarns used were easier to find and not so expensive. I crocheted several of the patterns but used yarns I purchased at my local store and from the rave's I received I think everyone loved them. The book title claims the projects can be made in a weekend, but I've crocheted for years and I don't think there was one project that could be made in a weekend. So in ending my review let me say I would purchase this book again and would recommend it as well. In my opinion patterns for babies are hard to find that can be used for everyday wear and this book has several and also the more dressy patterns as well.

9 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Hard to understand By A. S. Mitchell I would have liked to know that this book was written by an English author and uses English yarns. They detail the yarns by manufacturer, Rowan & Jaeger and Colinette, but do not rate them on the 1-6 system that yarn is rated at as to weight. The two US suppliers, one in New Hampshire and one in Pennsylvania don't have websites to order yarn from, making it hard to make a good substitution of yarn. Another problem: Cover coat is done on a 7mm needle, we only have 6.5 and 8 mm needles--no 7mm.

By Amazon Customer Who would have thought a book would be recommended by a woman who lived so many years before me? Louisa Mae Alcott mentioned this book in her book "Little men" (what I consider a recommendation)... & I'm sure glad she did! I have a boy close in age to the main character & so, I Connected to it immediately! The boy turning to God for strength through his trials is many a woman's hope for their children & though written long ago, is a joy to read!

By Ellen Montgomery I loved this book, I found out about it from Louisa May Alcott's "Jo's Boys". The boy in the story has to go through a lot, yet he learns to find strength from the One Friend who will never forsake him. It was an encouragement to me and I enjoyed the story (although the language can be a bit hard to understand). I recommend this book to everyone who loves reading classic books!

I recommend it to anyone raising little boys, what amazing character qualities instilled in him. The language is more old English style so your vocabulary will increase by just reading it. Mom's you might cry just to warn you.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. An Incredibly Thorough and Helpful Explanation of The Prayer Book By Fr. Charles Erlandson "The Annotated Book of Common Prayer" by Rev. John Henry Blunt is one of many, many erudite works of scholarship that came out of 19th century Anglicanism. Many commentaries and guides to The Book of Common Prayer have been made ever since the first Prayer Book in 1549, but the 19th century definitely marked the high point for such works, both in terms of the number of works and in terms of the level of scholarship. While this edition attributes the book to The Church of England, most editions attribute it to its editor, Blunt.Blunt's "The Annotated Book of Common Prayer" is one of the books that has most helped me, as an Anglican priest, to understand Anglicanism and the Prayer Book.Blunt's book is subtitled: "Being an Historical, Ritual, and Theological Commentary on the Devotional System of the Church of England." This subtitle is unusually important for Blunt is indicating not only that his work is a commentary on the Prayer Book but also that he will provide important historical, ritual, and theological information as the basis of this commentary. Especially important is Blunt's implicit understanding that the Prayer Book IS The Church of England's devotional system. Most people misunderstand the proper genre of the Prayer Book: it is not merely a collection of services but has been, in essence, the Rule of Life for Anglicans. Blunt's work is especially helpful, therefore, because he understands not only the many minute details of the Prayer Book but also has a holistic ecclesiastical perspective to help the reader make sense of the totality of the Prayer Book and it spirituality.Blunt's book is a massive work that contains an amazing wealth of information. Many other excellent Prayer Book commentaries exist, but Blunt's may be the best of all. He begins with a wonderful and lengthy Historical Introduction to the Prayer Book, tracing the Prayer Book not just from the first Prayer Book under Edward VI in 159 but tracing things from the early church through the first Prayer Book and then its various revisions up to the 19th century, when Blunt's work was written. There is enough information in this Introduction alone to make a book, for Blunt goes into great detail about the mindset behind the Prayer Book, as well as the reasons behind the various revisions.Next, Blunt offers a Ritual Introduction to the Prayer Book. This part of the book includes helpful sections on the principles of ceremonial worship, the musical performance of divine service, and the accessories of the service (including the ornaments of the minister.)In the remainder of the book, Blunt systematically goes through each part of the Prayer Book, offering historical background, theological insight, and practical explanations of each part. For anyone who wants to understand the Prayer Book better, and especially for those who want to use it as their Rule of Life in worshiping God, Blunt's book is a treasure trove of information that would be difficult to obtain from a variety of other sources. Traditional Anglicans, in particular, will benefit greatly from having Blunt on their bookshelves as a well-used reference work.

Although many might not recognize the name P.G. Wodehouse, they have inevitably come across his work. Wodehouse was a British humorist who wrote novels, short stories, journalism pieces, and other stuff, becoming extremely popular over a 70 year career. Today he is best known for the Jeeves and Blandings Castle novels and short stories, but he was also a playwright and lyricist who was part author and writer of 15 plays and 250 lyrics. Both the name "Jeeves" and the character of Jeeves have become a common part of the English lexicon, meaning a valet or chauffeur. It is even the inspiration behind the popular search engine Ask Jeeves.

A Damsel in Distress, by P.G. Wodehouse

Review "The very definition of British humor . . . and as Overlook continues its reissue of these absurd souffles, you can buy the work for yourself in suave hardcover volumes, the dust jackets as natty as the prose."

About the Author Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (P. G. Wodehouse) was an English humorist and writer best known for his Jeeves and Blandings Castle novels. Educated at boarding schools, Wodehouse turned to writing at a young age, demonstrating great skill at humorous sketches and musical lyrics. He continued to write part-time while pursuing, at the behest of his father, a career in banking, and successfully contributed numerous pieces to Punch, Vanity Fair, and The Daily Express, among other publications. In addition to his literary work, Wodehouse was incorporated into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in recognition of his collaboration with Cole Porter on Anything Goes, his lyrics to the song Bill from Show Boat, and his work on the musicals Rosalie and The Three Musketeers.

While interned along with other British citizens in Germany during the Second World War, Wodehouse made a series of radio broadcasts for which he was accused of being a collaborator; and, although later cleared of the charges, he never returned to England. His work has influenced many other writers including Evelyn Waugh, Rudyard Kipling, J. K. Rowling, and John Le Carr?. P. G. Wodehouse died in 1975 at the age of 93.

From AudioFile Good gad! Belpher Castle is a-dither with romance and intrigue. Wodehouse's usual twits are in full cry as they leap about the manicured landscape. And hovering close in the background are the ever-vigilant, poisonous aunts who spend their entire lives being aghast. There's plenty to be aghast about when the lord of the manor falls madly in love with an actress (huge intake of breath) named (another huge intake) Billie. Reader Frederick Davidson portrays each character perfectlyÐsorting them out for the listener. His portrayal of Reggie, the wealthy and earnest American composer, is wonderful, and the womenÐingenues and auntsÐare very sweet or dragonish, depending. Along the way, listeners learn never to throw rice at weddingsÐit's worse than shrapnel. Quite. B.V. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Doran, and then in the U.K. on October 17, 1919 by Herbert Jenkins, and it is a splendid example of early Wodehouse. This edition is part of The Collector's Wodehouse series being released by The Overlook Press (in the U.K. it is The Everyman's Wodehouse series from Everyman's Library). As with many Wodehouse classics, this one includes a collection of colorful characters, a complex love story involving many characters, and of course the happy ending where everything works out. It is the story of an American Composer, George Bevan, who falls in love with Maud (The Earl of Marshmoreton's daughter). Maud is already in love with another American, Geoffrey Raymond, who she met in Wales the previous year. Her brother and aunt, Lord Belpher and Lady Caroline Byng oppose her getting involved with the American and want her to marry someone from her social class. There are more characters as well, including some servants, Lady Caroline's son Reggie, Lord Marshmoreton's secretary Alice Faraday, and an acquaintance of George's Billie Dore who is in the Chorus of George's latest musical comedy. As with most Wodehouse stories, the plot is very complicated, and attempts to describe it in detail would fail to do it justice. It does involve a case of mistaken identity, a pool among the servants on who will marry Maud, and several characters finding their loves. Overall this is a very good example of a classic Wodehouse story, and it is well worth reading.

Screwball Comedy Wodehouse Style By Gord Wilson Just today I was making a list of the best-written bits in Wodehouse, and Damsel in Distress topped the list. Gracie Allen of Burns and Allen fame starred in an old black-and-white film based from this book and cast in the Billy Wilder screwball comedy vein. Arguably this book may not top the PGW cannon--nearly everyone would have a Jeeves, Mulliner or Drones book at the pinnacle of great reading--but it does contain some of the most delightful passages in Wodehouse. The movie falls far short of the book simply because it was made when "All Singing, All Dancing"--(and no plot) was considered a good review for a movie. Any number of PGW novels critique and lampoon his experiences in Hollywood, but seeing the film first and then reading the book, one might be pleasantly surprised. For me, this novel holds up as one of the best non-Jeeves stories, others being French Leave and The Girl On the Boat.

Love feast By Jason Dejoannis George Bevan, burgeoning young american musical composer, fancies himself a knight-in-shining-armor when in the middle of Piccadily Circus a fair maiden flings herself into his cab to escape the obese pursuit of the dragon - her brother Percy, heir to the family title and vigilant protector of the family name. Our hero's fair lady Maud does indeed live trapped within the tower of Castle Belpher to which he repairs in swift pursuit of happiness.George will face grim prospects in scheming servants, an evil aunt, a kindly but aunt-dominated Lord Marshmoreton and worst of all the fact that Maud is in love with another. The whole setting has obvious similarities to Blandings for those familiar with the Lord Emsworth stories. I wasn't roaring with laughter, but I was attached to the characters and couldn't put the book down. It is hard to say which book is a good introduction to Wodehouse because they are all so good!

This story was originally published in Day One, a weekly literary journal dedicated to short fiction and poetry from emerging writers.

After years of heroin addiction, Katrina and her boyfriend have finally kicked the habit. To celebrate the one-year anniversary of their sobriety, they take a trip to the coast, but their plans—and their lives—are shattered when a near-fatal accident leaves Katrina in a coma with third-degree burns covering most of her body. When she regains consciousness, she is forced to contend with a new reality: ceaseless pain and permanent disfigurement so extreme that she can hardly recognize herself.

With her boyfriend lost to relapse and the future they’d been working toward gone for good, Katrina is left alone to face the endless surgeries and agonizing tedium of life in the burn ward. In her search for reasons to live, she finds herself asking a question that cuts to the core of the human condition: Is survival worth unending suffering?

By Joplo Ghesquiere Only an author truly acquainted with the uncanny stompings of life, the impossible ways that suffering becomes happiness, and all back around again, could write such a story. The characters are alive, the truth is clear, I did not pause until I reached the last page. A very good story.

How to suffer well By Darryl Campbell When faced with a situation like Katrina's--in what way is it best to suffer?--there are no clear "right" answers. This story looks at what it really means to find strength within oneself, especially when faced with such a whiplash between loss, recovery, and utter devastation.

Vera, by Elizabeth von Arnim

About the Author Known for his barbed wit, Oscar Wilde was one of the most successful late-Victorian playwrights and a great celebrity. The Importance of Being Earnest and The Picture of Dorian Gray are among his best known works. He is perhaps most famous for his trial, in which he eloquently defended homosexual love and was sentenced to two years of hard labor.

Though its debut was a failure I think this play doesn't deserve to be relegated to oblivion. I liked performance of the seller. They delivered this item in time and in good condition. I'll recommend them to other customers.

The entries are so crammed in, it is hard to tell were one starts and another begins. Better spacing and photos would make this a much better book. Also the instructions are not very clear in some of the entries. Others are missing ingredients and a lot of typos. For the price I paid, free, there were a few really good ideas. Would not pay for this, in it's current edition.

The Book:

Filling Mama's Shoes is a hybrid novella and memory journal for all to enjoy, but especially for those in the GI and Silent Generations. The book is filled with historical references and provides a light read for an individual or an easy story to be read aloud to others. Its mission is to provide an entertaining story that will prompt memories and help readers capture priceless family and personal histories. Memory journal prompts are provided for each chapter and coincide with events in the story. The Story:

Daffodils surround Naomi Carroll’s home – a home the 90-year-old will soon leave. As she uproots some of the bulbs for transplanting, she recalls the origin and significance of her precious flowers and takes her great-granddaughter on a journey through time as she begins to share the odyssey of the daffodils. In this first volume, Naomi recalls that losing her mother was the worst thing that ever happened to her as a child, but admitting she wanted a new mother hurt almost as much. As the story begins, the miseries of life in 1935 clash against the memory of the gracious lady her mother was and the warmth that filled their home before her mother died. At first Naomi tries to fill her Mama's shoes by refining herself and her reluctant sisters. But when she realizes the task is beyond her reach, she turns to matchmaking. Filling mama's shoes leads to big trouble for Naomi until she learns that Mama's grace can be found in surprising places.

Great story reminding us of personal and family history By A Great Reader I chose to give this novella a five star rating because it was different than anything else I've ever read. At the end of each chapter, the author asks questions that prompt the reader to lean back into the past and recall personal and family histories. I reflected on stories from my mother, father and grandparents that I want to pass on to my child and grandchildren.I enjoyed "seeing" the story from the eyes of little girl in 1930's America with The Dust Bowl and Great Depression in full stride. Her optimism was admirable.I am looking forward to other books by this author.

The Way of All Flesh, by Samuel Butler

About the Author Samuel Butler (4 December 1835 – 18 June 1902) was an iconoclastic Victorian-era English author who published a variety of works. Two of his most famous pieces are the Utopian satire Erewhon and a semi-autobiographical novel published posthumously, The Way of All Flesh. He is also known for examining Christian orthodoxy, substantive studies of evolutionary thought, studies of Italian art, and works of literary history and criticism. Butler made prose translations of the Iliad and Odyssey, which remain in use to this day.

The Victorian Novel Grows Up By brewster22 "The Way of All Flesh" seems to be best known as the Victorian novel that thumbed its nose at Victorian novels. For this reason, it's frequently mentioned in talks of literary history, but I don't ever hear of anyone praising Samuel Butler's novel from an artistic perspective. Actually, I find the book more interesting for its story than for its place in the development of 19th and 20th century literature.I tried to read this novel once and only got through the first 100 pages or so. I found it remarkably dull and dry, and the tone of the first-person narrator (Mr. Overton), who stops the action every 10 pages or so to offer personal asides that reveal more about him than about the characters he's writing about, I thought to be snide and irritating. But I hate not finishing a book, so I picked it up again, this time understanding that it would be a dry read and prepared to appreciate it for its historical context. To my surprise, I found myself caught up in the story and thought the whole thing very funny. I can't believe I missed all the humour the first time through.I hesitate to give this novel too much credit for deflating the pompous bubble of Victorian morality, because other authors writing at the same time as Butler were doing the same thing (Dickens for one can be incredibly caustic). But there is a maturity to Butler's writing that is not present in other Victorian writers. This novel feels much more modern than anything else written pre-1900, and even feels more modern than some books written after. Unlike Dickens, whose characters are either all good or all bad and have about as much depth as the characters you'd find in a comic book (this isn't a criticism--I like Dickens), Butler's characters (at least Ernest, his protagonist) seem very much alive and flawed. Ernest is easily influenced by everyone around him and makes decisions based on how he thinks he should act rather than how he wants to act. He doesn't know what he wants out of life, he's a screw up, he's got lousy luck. All of these things make him quite endearing because they make him so human. The scathing criticism of religious hypocrisy and moral bombast exhibited by the majority of people in Ernest's life can be funny, especially if you agree with it (as I do), but the story itself is much more interesting than the social commentary.I would definitely recommend this book. It's not necessarily a page turner, but it consistently held my interest. Just remember that it's supposed to be funny. Think of Butler as a 19th century Evelyn Waugh, and you should do just fine.

However, the bulk of the story concerns the life of Ernest Pontifex, from about age 5 up to age 28, and describes his unsatisfactory relations with his parents, his school, his church, his wife, and his friends. Sometimes we feel sorry for Ernest, because many of his problems are caused by unbelievably cruel or thoughtless people, and sometimes we're furious with him, because he himself is the author of at least half of his troubles, but either way his misfortunes make him stronger and move him steadily along the path to maturity. Throughout, the book remains an easy read, although the writing is very witty and often rewards close examination.Even today, 100 years after the book's publication, a reader finds many things to identify with. Anyone who felt unjustly treated by his or her parents or teachers will find much to sympathize with here. Anyone who has wrestled with the conflict between Reason and Faith will find much to think about here. Given how much change the last century has seen, it's surprising how many of the issues still seem fresh and relevant, and the book definitely makes you think about them. It is easy to see how many people have described reading The Way of All Flesh as a turning point in their lives.A point worth keeping in mind: the characters are all described from Ernest's point of view. Several clues tell us that Ernest exaggerates the cruelty of various characters - some of whom seem evil beyond belief, and I think it's quite clear that, at these points, we're supposed to smile at Ernest - not shake our heads at the author. This is most obvious with Ernest's schoolmaster, Dr. Skinner, whom Ernest consistently sees as a pompous fool, but who we also know is very popular with the best students, and who shows other signs of being a much better man than Ernest believes him to be.The footnotes in my edition (Penguin Classics 1986) are very skimpy, focusing on comparing elements from Ernest's fictional life to Samuel Butler's real one. The failure of the notes to translate passages in French or Latin, or to explain very contemporary references, is inexcusable. (E.g. but for the recent controversy over his Beatification, we'd have no clue that "Pio Nono" was Pope Pius IX.) Hoggart's introduction (1966) is decent but a bit dated, not having weathered as well as the book itself!

Having heard of it forever, when the Kindle version came out, free, I went for it, and was amazed. It was written in the 1860's, but not published until Butler's death in 1903 or 1905, and the reader can see why. It's a semi-autobiographical novel about a young man growing up in rural surroundings in nineteenth-century England. His father, the local curate, and all the other "pillars" of English society are shown to be hopelessly pompous, ignorant hypocrites, while still believable as characters. When he finally comes into some money, independently, his entire wretched family pitches in to convince him, first, that he is unworthy of such good fortune, and, second, that he should give it all to them. Butler's writing style is to leave most of the dialogue indirect, so there aren't a lot of quotation marks in the book, but that gives him plenty of room to offer snide comments on the proceedings. The resulting style is like a three-way cross between Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and Anthony Burgess.

How far would a mother go to save her child? Micah Harper was born a free spirit. A ten-year-old befriender of trees and wild animals, she desired nothing more than to spend her days traipsing around the mountain that surrounded her home, unearthing its many secrets. All that changed one summer morning when Evie Delaney arrived. Micah took one look at the unannounced and unwelcomed young girl her mother dared to call kin and knew if they were relation of any sort, an entire ocean could fit between the branches of their tree. Summer cast a magic spell, and the two girls soon realized everything that made them different also made them one. As they took refuge in the enchanted forest that harbored their many secrets, Micah and Evie pledged to stay together forever, but cruel forces beyond their control tore them apart. In the aftermath, neither girl was left whole. Twenty years later, their paths crossed again. Still different as night and day, one blossomed into up a darling socialite while the other became a queen of the suburbs. Despite the time and distance that separated them, they discovered they needed each other more than ever before. In a race against time, they set off on a journey in search of a miracle. Their only remaining hope was guarded by a legion of demons that were more formidable foes than the wild beasts that stalked the jungle’s night. When all they stood to lose if they failed was everything, Micah and Evie had no other choice but to surrender to a faith that had long ago been forgotten.

We all enjoy, from time to time, a book that lets us fly through the pages without a thought or care screeching to a end with everyone happy. This is not that book. This book takes us into the lives of two girls that meet when they are ten years old. They meet again 20 years later. Everything from the time they meet, until you turn the last page is filled with mystery, secrets, danger, love, and every emotion in between. You can't predict where the story is going from one chapter to the next. This book makes us think, wonder, worry, and at times it will make you angry. But you will not be bored. You will think about this book for a long time after you turn the last page! Jump in! Buckle up! And get ready for a ride of a life time!

DC Hicks's proses enter into the souls of the main characters and tell a story with many twists and turns

As readers, we never learn how big events truly occur...we get vague descriptions. The main characters are difficult to like, love, or hate, because we aren't privy to what shaped them, what motivates them. Plot lines are picked up, only to be left dangling. Repeatedly. It's a very basic, surface read. I recommend looking elsewhere.
