“To call The Promise of the Child one of the most accomplished debuts of 2015 so far is to understate its weight—instead, let me moot that it is among the most significant works of science fiction released in recent years.”—Tor.comIt is the 147th century. In the radically advanced post-human worlds of the Amaranthine Firmament, there is a contender to the Immortal throne: Aaron the Long-Life, the Pretender, a man who is not quite a man.In the barbarous hominid kingdoms of the Prism Investiture, where life is short, cheap, and dangerous, an invention is born that will become the Firmament’s most closely kept secret.Lycaste, a lovesick recluse outcast for an unspeakable crime, must journey through the Provinces, braving the grotesques of an ancient, decadent world to find his salvation.Sotiris, grieving the loss of his sister and awaiting the madness of old age, must relive his twelve thousand years of life to stop the man determined to become Emperor.Ghaldezuel, knight of the stars, must plunder the rarest treasure in the Firmament—the object the Pretender will stop at nothing to obtain. From medieval Prague to a lonely Mediterranean cove, and eventually far into the strange vastness of distant worlds, The Promise of the Child is a debut novel of gripping action and astounding ambition unfolding over hundreds of thousands of years, marking the arrival of a brilliant new talent in science fiction.Skyhorse Publishing, under our Night Shade and Talos imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of titles for readers interested in science fiction (space opera, time travel, hard SF, alien invasion, near-future dystopia), fantasy (grimdark, sword and sorcery, contemporary urban fantasy, steampunk, alternative history), and horror (zombies, vampires, and the occult and supernatural), and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller, a national bestseller, or a Hugo or Nebula award-winner, we are committed to publishing quality books from a diverse group of authors.

Review ADVANCE PRAISE FOR THE PROMISE OF THE CHILD“To call The Promise of the Child one of the most accomplished debuts of 2015 so far is to understate its weight—instead, let me moot that it is among the most significant works of science fiction released in recent years.”—Tor.com“One of the most ambitious and epic-scale pieces of worldbuilding I’ve read. Reading The Promise of the Child, you feel you’re in the presence of an author at the height of his powers. If this is what Toner is like when he’s just getting started, I think we can expect great things from him. Utterly absorbing; a tremendous adventure.”—Karl Schroeder, author of Lockstep and Sun of Suns“Bold and intense from start to finish, The Promise of the Child is a master-class in innovative, evocative world-building. The entire book buzzes with imagination.”—Michael J. Martinez, author of The Daedalus Incident“An amazing debut—a colorful space opera in the post-human tradition of Iain M. Banks, combined with the razor-sharp plotting of Alastair Reynolds. It left me feverish with delight.”—Loren Rhoads, author of The Dangerous Type“Humming with energy, this is space opera like you've never seen it before. Absolutely brilliant.”—Adam Roberts, author of Salt and Jack Glass“A gorgeously-written, wildly imaginative book. It’s like no space opera I’ve ever read–compelling and addictive.”—Will McIntosh, Hugo-award winning author of Soft Apocalypse and Defenders“An amazing debut. Intriguing, disorientating. Like Hannu Rajaniemi’s The Quantum Thief or Moorcock’s Dancers At The End OF Time, it's told with the heightened vibrancy of a fable, and the melancholic sense of age and decadence so prevalent in Jack Vance’s Emphyrio.”—Gareth Powell, BSFA Award-winning author of Ack-Ack Macaque“A dizzying mash-up of science fiction and fantasy themes that are both mystifying and entertaining. . .will appeal to readers who enjoy the offbeat end of far-future sf. This is the kind of novel that could develop a cult following.”—Booklist Reviews“Ambitious. . .The several 147th-century cultures on display are fascinating. . .The pace picks up as the tale moves toward its end, but this is the kind of book that will most appeal to cerebral readers who can appreciate its characters’ many verbal interactions.”—Publisher's Weekly“This is the purest example of space opera we’ve seen in some time. . . .The book is challenging, ambitious, and rewarding, and it’s impossible not to admire Toner’s wild imagination and carefully constructed world. This thing is bonkers, no question. It’s also one helluva debut.”—Barnes & Noble, Sci-Fi & Fantasy Blog“Marvelous. . .a space opera of surpassing gracefulness, depth, complexity, and well, all-round weirdness.”—Paul Di Filippo, Locus“First rate ... a clever and interesting world, with something new always coming across the horizon, more wonders as yet unreached. I ate it up with a spoon.”—Paul Weimer, SFSignal"The Promise of the Child is a rip-roaring, full-blown Space Opera, with Epic-ness writ large across its pages... an impressive debut and one of my favourite books of the year, I think." Mark Yon, SFFWorld

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Great writing shows immense potential; execution a little lacking By Zachary Jernigan I'm honestly not quite sure what I think. I felt about this a lot like I did about Anne Leckie's ANCILLARY JUSTICE -- as if I should have loved it but somehow didn't. To be clear, I liked it better than Leckie's book by a fair margin, if only because it's more in my wheelhouse: a science-fantasy, written well and with full ambition on display.Nonetheless, a lot in here just dragged on. From the imagery, which was compelling but oddly unclear to this reader's inner eye, to the plot itself (and I'm not really an "I-need-a-plot sort of guy"), there just wasn't a whole hell of a lot to hang onto beside the ambitious scope. The writing, while not once embarrassing -- my biggest worry picking up an sff book; my biggest worry when I go back to read my own work -- didn't really thrill me, either. There were a few supercool turns of phrase, but overall I didn't feel Toner reaching for anything.... Again, other than scope. Toner is working the long game of the imagination, clearly, and for once I admire it. Why? Because it's not built on the soap-opera-ish drama of most epic sff works; instead, it's a real vision of a frustratingly rich (read: tantalizing, but not painted with any specificity) future. For that leap of imagination alone, it deserves four stars. If you're a reader like me, you'll be thrilled not so much by this single work, but the potential it reveals.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Couldn't do it By Amanda Tulacz I really wanted to like this book. I was so excited to read it, and started reading it immediately after I received it. However.... It was like being thrown into the middle of a stranger's conversation without knowing anything about what they're discussing. It was really confusing. There was no explanation behind the worlds, characters, species, etc until about 120 pages in, and at that point I stopped caring because it was still really vague. I tried to read further, but it just wouldn't hold my interest anymore.

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Confusing and fascinating. By Thomas Holm A whirl of stories, connected yet independent.I was entertained enough to read all the way through. But no wiser at the end.

After you 've read a few of Alice Miller 's works you pretty well know how they're going to turn out. Also interesting for a glimpse into life in the 1920s.

Imagine a beautiful, productive garden that doesn't need hours of watering. In most regions this is achievable, and we will explain how.

In this book we share our successful, proven methods for productive organic gardening while saving valuable time and water. We have developed these techniques ourselves in our own food gardens, and we have successfully taught them to many gardeners. During droughts in recent years, our clients continued to garden productively, some bringing in record harvests of kumara (sweet potatoes), pumpkins, and tomatoes.

There are other benefits to being waterwise: You'll have fewer weeds, stronger plants, and a more vibrant garden ecology.

Here's just some of what you'll learn in this book:

  • How to design a waterwise garden.
  • How to retrofit an existing garden to be waterwise.
  • Which is most water-efficient - raised beds or inground beds.
  • Our best watering techniques.
  • Why too much watering can be bad for your garden.
  • Why mulch is so important for a waterwise garden.
  • And much more.

Clare Jackson has put together a brilliant collection of common sense ideas for those of us trying to survive with limited water supplies. This year, setting up a new garden, with only rain water collected from my roof for watering has presented more than a few problems. Next year will be different! I won't be spending most of my gardening time running around with a watering can trying to revive parched plants. Fortunately, the soil here is a great loam type, so, with some serious mulching I will be aiming to keep the moisture where it is needed. Somehow I will try to plant the vegetable garden in a less structured way as Clare suggests by moving plants closer and increasing the compost levels. If you haven't got the luxury of a town water supply, hoses, sprinklers and outside taps, check out this super handy book. This is a survival book for people looking for productive vegetable gardens and other healthy plantings. Simple ideas for great results.

By Ira Mayer It is a dream of so many to step outside your home and enter a delightful blooming and blossoming garden, filled with healthy vegetables & fruits as a supply for vitamins and an overall balanced nutrition,Clare Jackson is an accomplished organic gardener & horticulturist. She loves gardening and is happy to share her experience of more than 25 years. Her newest specialist book "Grow More, Water Less: Waterwise Organic..." is articulate & clearly understandable written and will guide the garden novice as well as the experienced gardener step by step through all the stages of planning & design or retrofitting an existing garden to be water wise. I highly recommend this booklet especially to families to whom it will be a brilliant source and encouragement for creating a 'Family Garden' as a long term project with their children. It is a great encouragement to be mindful while working with the seasons, climate & weather in your garden.

Solutions for gardening without water will become the norm By Richard Main Clare shared her Waikato experiences of gardening success in applying organic water conservation techniques all year round. From design to seasonal implementation this guide offers proven tips to grow an abundance of crops in dry conditions and without wasting H2O . I like the option of hydro zoning; growing plants like lettuce, rocket and spinach close together given their similar water needs and mulching makes a lot of sense to hold water in plant root zones.A concise, easily applied guide to growing your water wise garden

63 of 66 people found the following review helpful. Good sequel By EA Solinas Most sequels stink. A lot. George MacDonald, the first fantasy master, managed to buck that trend with the sequel to "The Princess and the Goblin," with "The Princess and Curdie." If anything, this book is even better than the first -- a bit more mature, a little bit darker, but with the same haunting prose and likeable characters. In the time since the defeat of the goblins, Curdie has gone back to his life as a miner. Unfortunately he also begins to stray from the pure actions he showed in the first book, pushing aside thoughts of Princess Irene's grandmother and trying to convince himself that the more supernatural events of "Goblin" were just imagination. Until he needlessly wounds a pigeon with his bow and arrow, and takes it to the stately, mysterious Grandmother. As Curdie regains his innocence and his faith, the Lady sends him on a quest, with a weird doglike creature called Lina who was once a human. She also (by having him stick his hands into burning roses) makes his hands able to feel a person's soul when he touches them, if a person is "growing into a beast" on the inside. Now Curdie and Lina set off for the capital, where Irene's father is physically ill, and falling prey to the scheming of his sinister officials. If the first book was Irene's, then this book is undeniably Curdie's. The focus is on him almost constantly through the book, and it's his internal struggles that we are fascinated by. Every person (well, most of them, anyway) eventually loses their childlike faith and innocence, as Curdie has begun to do at the beginning. He's naturally a more skeptical person than Irene, and so time begins to fade whatever he thought he saw; also, being "one of the guys" in the mine requires a seemingly more mature attitude. But with the loss of innocence also goes some of the faith and internal beauty, and so MacDonald brings Curdie back to the gentle, trusting kid he was in the first book. The Lady (also known as Irene's great-great-great-grandmother, Lady of the Silver Moon, and Mother Wotherwop -- don't ask about the last one) is also a more prominent figure. She's still both maternal and supernaturally distant, very warm while also seeming to know everything. Precisely who and what she is remains a mystery, but we see more of her subtle, awe-inspiring powers here. The writing is, as the first book was, immensely dreamy and haunting. MacDonald let rip with the surreally beautiful descriptions of the Lady's room and appearances, and of scenes like Curdie sticking his hands into the rose petals. Like in "Princess and the Goblin," the plot takes awhile to get moving, but it's so well-written that you probably won't notice."The Princess and Curdie" is currently harder to find than the first book, which strikes me as a little odd. (Especially since this duology is just screaming to be compiled in one book) But anyone who enjoyed the first book, or even just enjoys a gorgeously-written fantasy, will definitely want to get this sequel.

Perhaps the two best children's books ever By Dan Nutley The Princess and the Goblin and this book, The Princess and Curdie, together make up a single story that is among the most moving and insightful tales ever penned for children, or rather for the child-like.In the first book, Curdie is an almost perfect young boy, fearless and valiant, and though only twelve he is instrumental in saving the kingdom from a goblin plot. In The Princess and Curdie, though, he sets out becoming more and more ordinary, until by good fortune he comes face to face with the mysterious old woman rumored to live in the nearby tower (the Princess already knows her quite well!). The old woman prepares Curdie for a quest she is sending him on. How? By having him plunge his hands into a pile of rose petals that burns like a fire.Though Curdie thinks his hands have burned off, he finds them unscathed. But they have a new sensitivity: by shaking a person's hand, he can tell what kind of an animal they are turning into, at heart. The old woman also gives him a companion--a hideous dog-like beast, but whose great ugly paw feels to Curdie like the hand of a little girl.Curdie travels to the capitol city, where he finds the kingdom in a sorry state, his friend the Princess near despair, and her King-Papa ensnared and enfeebled by the devious plots of the all-too-real and believable officials of the court. The threat posed to the kingdom by those who serve in the castle is far greater than the earlier threat posed by the goblins. This wonderful story shows good and evil fighting, and shows that the two go by very different sets of rules! And help comes from strange quarters. I never grow tired of this book's insights or of the great plot and storyline. I've re-read both books every couple years since my first time as a child, more than 30 years ago. MacDonald and Lewis Carroll were friends, but to my tastes MacDonald is the greater storyteller. And the ending of this story is unlike any I've read elsewhere, serving as the source of many discussions on why MacDonald ended it that way!

23 of 24 people found the following review helpful. A hero's tale By EA Solinas One of the most memorable characters from George MacDonald's "The Princess and the Goblin" was the miner boy Curdie, who rescues Princess Irene and infiltrates the goblin kingdom. But the princess was the real focus on the book, not her miner boy. However, the sequel "The Princess and Curdie" shifts the focus from Irene to Curdie. MacDonald's otherworldly writing elevates what could have been a simple morality tale, and makes it both horrifying and beautiful. This is one book that doesn't suffer as a sequel.Time has passed since the events of the first book, and now Curdie is back in the mines, and has come to believe that Irene's great-great-grandmother is "nothing but ridiculous nonsense." Then one day he thoughtlessly shoots a pigeon -- a pigeon that happens to belong to that lady. Overcome with remorse, he carries the pigeon to the tower where she lives. The lady forgives Curdie, but gives him a mission to fulfil, to make up for it: He and a repulsive creature called Lina must find a way to save the king from his malignant advisors. To do that, she gives him the power to tell whether a man is good at heart -- or is turning into a beast.About ninety-nine percent of the time, it would be a rotten idea to make a sequel to a book like "The Princess and the Goblin." It was charming, magical and optimistic. So why mess with something that is already perfect? But "The Princess and Curdie" has the success of being a more mature, darker book, with a surprisingly palatable moral lesson. The skeptical Curdie learns that "whoever does not mean good is always in danger of harm," and MacDonald provides a small glimpse at the darker side of human nature.MacDonald's writing stays dreamy and vaguely otherworldly, even with such ordinary things as a family sitting down to dinner, or children running out to see a dog. The only problem is the ending, a few paragraphs that could have been easily left out, which seem needlessly pessimistic after the book's triumphant events.MacDonald continues wotj the mysterious, goddess-like presence of the old princess, hinting that she is everywhere under different names. And Lina is an especially poignant addition, a woman who did something, and ended up being turned into a grotesque creature as a punishment. While "The Princess and Curdie" is very different from its predecessor, it is also a rich, enchanting fantasy story that builds on the strengths of MacDonald's first "Princess" book.

Upon notification of his mother-in-law's failing health, Paul Danniers agrees to move with his wife, Colleen, to Praxia Island, a small town off the coast of Maine. The two suddenly find themselves thrust into a society of recluses who obey a peculiar set of rules, including Disappearance - the belief that if two people touch, they disappear. As their stay extends into months, Paul enters an uncertain spiral of paranoia, and, with the help of the curious and sometimes terrifying residents, begins to uncover the island's secrets - most troubling of which is a deep-rooted connection that Colleen seems to have with the town, one that threatens to possess her entirely.Rife with rich symbolism and nods to Greek mythology, Warning's Wane is a dizzying study of madness, isolation, and the power of the collective unconscious.

Must Transform into Grand Movie By Ankit Saxena Well, I don't know from where to start..Jaclyn did a finest job with her debut writing (official, obviously). I must say this novel remarks the evolution of a Promising Writer to read in Future(must). The story is the combination love, thrill, mystery, horror and what not that one need to have in one literary work. To bring all the contents in one place is hard for anyone but Jaclyn had done a great job. I read some other reviews also and very much agree with Kearney's . I really enjoyed it to the fullest. It gives you the feel of sizzling coal that burns slowly to give warmth in cold. I feel happy that I read Warning's Wane. Ms. Little has bought every emotion in her work very smoothly.Story Starts with the arrival of Protagonists' (Paul & Colleen) on the Island of Praxia, the one that is not exist for rest of the world. Paul's uncertain paranoia because of the curious and sometimes terrifying residents, his initiative to uncover the island's secrets - most troubling of which is a deep-rooted connection that Colleen seems to have with the town, one that threatens to possess her entirely. Only God can give such natural seeming thought. "Touching is not allowed on Praxia Island", this the newest thought which makes the story more interesting. I never thought I like the book that much, A LOT. How one can live without touching their loved ones, their off-springs, their parents, even the one who is dying and needs care? The story goes slow & steady but with full matured mystery that bring enthusiasm and curiosity to read it in go. to make me stuck with it I tried to read slow and let the good time continue for big period.Reading this makes me more curious for what Jaclyn will bring next. I have to keep eye on You Ms. Little. There is always a space for improvement which makes you a big name. It comes with time. After reading it full you may'll Question yourself for if this a true story? This is the aura that Author has created of her work. She knows how to play with time, memory and space. creating a visual image of the scene like getting a letter to read through calligraphy makes her the master of language, the one knew what kind of language to use, and when & how to use.I am looking forward for this novel to transform very soon into a Big Movie. the one with lovers all over the world. However, I got this "Warning's Wane" as a part of giveaway contest, but I can say My reviews are not much into effect in front of what this work actually is? Hats-Off to you Jaclyn for this stunning Debut Novel. I wish we'll get more form you in coming Years. For me this deserves 5.0/5.0

A dangerous spectrum of emotions takes you in completely. At times you are overwhelmed by despair and rage whereas later on you begin to empathize with the poor creatures, the remains of human beings, that are fearfully loyal to the ridiculous rules of the island. The story picks up in a fast pace and gradually slows down to a monotonous flow of the island's ways. The graphic details that place the book into real dimension make one think that nothing abides by the rules of logic on this forsaken island. The author has done an amazing job presenting the book from a man's perspective. Paul and Colleen undergo dramatic changes - they are no longer able to communicate. It makes one question the essence of an intimate relationship - can it withstand lack of physical closeness? At some point Paul realizes that he can no longer console his wife, a stranger, with words only. All interactions are depicted beautifully through glances, gestures and conversations. With Paul's paranoia escalating one begins to doubt credibility of all that is happening around him. The fact that there is no way off the island - however impossible that may sound - adds to the horror. The final stage of the book, enigmatic and puzzling to say the least, transforms into Apollinaire's calligrammes and takes a more poetic turn. Throughout the book we revisit the past with all its tragedies and happy mementos through dreams and such poetic excerpts. It is done masterfully and does not intrude into the story. It would be great to have that book made into a movie.

Through painstaking detail the author paints an incredibly vivid portrait of the bleak and hostile physical and emotional landscape of Praxia and its denizens, so much so that the Island itself becomes a living, breathing character in its own right. What starts off as a ludicrous premise turns into something so tangible and horrifying that I was haunted by the implications of such a grim existence long after I finished the book. The terror is is so subtly and masterfully constructed that I found myself mirroring the obsessive spiral of paranoia and fear that keeps our lead in perpetual, simmering turmoil, hoping for some sort of release every time I turned the page. There are lots of interesting ideas alluded to here, surrounding cultural mores, extremism and tyranny. Ultimately, it's our mortal phobias and the lengths to which humans will sometimes go to seek security that proves scarier than any corporeal monster.Warning's Wane is a mystery without the melodrama associated with so many thrillers. Instead, it's a well paced, quiet and at times quite mundane exploration into a couple's descent into madness, beautifully written and sinisterly staged. I can easily see this being a successful film in the right hands. Bravo!

Babbitt, by Sinclair Lewis

From Publishers Weekly Lewis's tale of middle-class frustration, stress and success in the 1920s is brought to life by the L.A. Theatre Works 1987 full cast production featuring more than 30 actors, including Ed Asner (as Babbitt), Judge Reinhold, Ted Danson, Richard Dreyfuss, Helen Hunt and John Lithgow. With a deep and raspy voice and with great projection, Asner delivers a believable and amusing performance that securely anchors the entire production. Whether bullying his family or spouting politics with his friends at the club, Asner keeps the consistency of the self-aggrandizing character solid throughout. Jazz music segues well between scenes, though without any additional production sound beyond voices, it can at times feel out of place. While the full cast proves enjoyable in their individual parts, many take turns narrating the exposition throughout the production. At times, this is executed well, but sometimes it feels as if the director is just trying to give everyone more voice time. (Sept.) From Library Journal First published in 1922, Babbitt is an authentic modern American classic, a biting satire of middle-American values that retains much of its poignancy today. George F. Babbitt, Lewis's outwardly successful but inwardly unhappy real estate salesman, still seems real. His story makes engrossing reading and is ideal for audio listening. With Babbitt himself at the center of every scene, it is impossible for listeners plagued by frequent interruptions to lose track of the story line. Narrator Wolfram Kandinsky has a voice that many listeners may find grating; however, his reading here conveys an appropriate ironic tone that is especially apt when he reads Babbitt's own lines. Recommended for general fiction collections. Kent Rasmussen, Thousand Oaks, CACopyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

Review "This is world-class radio theatre with, for once, an American label." -- Dan Sullivan, Los Angeles TimesSinclair Lewis' classic satire of the ignorantly entrapped entrepreneur gains relevance as a radio play. 81 of 84 people found the following review helpful. Highly Entertaining By Jeffrey Leach Sinclair Lewis wrote a series of satires that exposed the hypocrisy of early 20th century America. “Babbitt” is a snapshot of the life of George F. Babbitt, a somewhat prosperous middle class businessman who lives in Zenith, Ohio. Zenith has a population of 300,000+, and has an active business community. This community has its own rituals and ironclad rules. These rules consist of being one of the gang, being a member of all the right clubs and organizations, and never deviating from the ideals of business and money. These rules cause enormous difficulties for Babbitt when he goes through a midlife crisis at the end of the book and begins spouting liberal ideas and associating with the “wrong” crowd. This is my first encounter with Sinclair Lewis. I really don’t know why I chose to read “Babbitt” first, as I also have copies of “Main Street” and “Arrowsmith”. I think it was the unusual cover of the Penguin edition, which is a picture of a painting called “Booster” by Grant Wood. To me, that picture IS Babbitt, and I’ll always be able to see Babbitt in my head whenever I’m reminded of this book. There really isn’t a lot of symbolism here (and the symbolism that is here is pretty easy to decipher) and the prose is much closer to our present day writing and speech. This is brilliant satire, and you’ll laugh out loud at many of the situations Babbitt gets himself into. An especially hilarious incident occurs when one of the local millionaire businessmen finally accepts an invitation to dine with Babbitt. The evening goes badly because Babbitt is in a lower social class. Lewis then shows Babbitt going to a dinner at an old friends house who is in a lower class then him. It’s hilarious to see the similarities between the two events, and it brings home how class is strictly enforced in Zenith, and by extension, America.Babbitt is a person that I found myself both hating and liking, often within the space of one page. He’s ignorant, in that he is a major conformist who often repeats slogans and phrases merely because others in his circle say the same things. He’s a namedropper who refers to people he doesn’t even know as though they were his best friends. He’s also high volume. Babbitt is one of those people we all know who is always boisterous and noisy so they can hide their own insecurities or ignorance. Just when you think you can’t stand Babbitt for another second, Lewis tosses in a situation that makes you feel for the man. Babbitt is the boss at a real estate company, and he worries about his employees liking him. When a confrontation arises with one of his salesmen, Babbitt frets and doesn’t want to fire the guy, although the rules of business eventually force him to do exactly that. He wants all of his employees to like him. He also feels bad about cheating on his wife while she is away and worries about what his children will think of him when he comes in drunk after a night of carousing. Ultimately, although Babbitt can be a major heel, the reader is almost forced to sympathize with him. This is true especially at the end of the book, when Babbitt renounces his liberal ways and rejoins his old colleagues. His return to the pack is not quite complete, however. Babbitt is changed by his transgression, and has learned a few lessons that he imparts to his son on the last page of the book, thus ending the tale on an upbeat note.I would like to have seen a better section of explanatory notes in this Penguin edition. While some of the more obscure references are defined, many are not. Also, some of the language in the book is very 1920’s slang, and for a 21st century ear, it can be difficult to pick up on some of them. This book is both funny and sad, but well worth reading. Sinclair Lewis eventually won Pulitzer and Nobel prizes for his literary endeavors. It’s not hard to see why. Recommended.

He lives in a medium-sized home in a medium-sized city in the Middle West. He's a middleman--he sells real estate. He went to a state university and depends on his secretary to fix the spelling and grammar in his letters. His children fight over who gets to use the car. His life is pretty straight and narrow, until he begins an affair when his wife is out of town and all of a sudden things aren't so middle-of-the-road anymore.Sound like anyone you know? But "Babbitt" was published--almost unbelievably--in 1922. Funny how little some things have changed. Lewis's satire on suburban life and its conformities was an instant hit. Even today, we know what a Babbitt is--a guy who's all show and no go--whose lifestyle and opinions have been furnished for him but maybe whose soul is a little out of whack. It's a pity that schools usually assign the much slower-paced "Main Street". Read "Main Street" to see what life used to be like. Read "Babbitt" to see how we got to where we are today.

Peppy All-American Booster Weathers Mid-Life Crisis By Bob Newman Sinclair Lewis and Thomas Hart Benton, the artist, were about the same age, they both focussed on the American Heartland, and as I read Lewis, I see that they both had something else in common. They both had a tendency to draw cartoonish characters. George F. Babbitt is the main character of a satire by the same name; you might even laugh aloud in some places. Lewis is skillful, but at times, heavy-handed. He has portrayed an average Joe of 1920, the pep- and vim-obsessed go-getting businessman who was the bedrock of our industrial age, hypocritical, materialist, crooked, conformist, even proto-fascist. Babbitt is a real estate agent, a family man surrounded by the wealth of material goods provided by thriving industrial capitalism. He belongs enthusiastically and unquestioningly to any organization dedicated to preserving his and his family's ready access to those goods---professional group (realtors association), Boosters, church, and set social circle. He spouts meaningless platitudes on every subject, knows nothing except the price of real estate and methods of collusion, and ignores his feelings, his family, and the rest of the world, all the while believing that his city, state, and country are the best in the world. The first 90-odd pages of BABBITT are pure genius; one of the best character portraits you are likely to find in American literature---but it is a caricature after all. Lewis' choice of names underlines his cartoonish glee in writing this brilliant novel---Vergil Gunch, Professor Pumphrey, Chet Laylock, Matt Penniman, Muriel Frink, Opal Mudge, Carrie Nork, and Miss McGoun---names that could have been annexed years later by MAD magazine ! "Babbitt" has long been a word in American English, signifying a conforming materialist citizen without a mind of his own. Perhaps this is not entirely fair.George goes through a mid-life crisis, rebels against his static, materialistic life with its know-nothing attitudes, its moral certitudes, and its boring routines. His closest friend (aren't there certain unspoken overtones of homosexual love ?) commits a dastardly deed, breaking George's heart. "On the rebound", he meets the fantastically-named Tanis Judique, femme fatale à la Midwest. Certain consequences arise, Lewis brings in his ever-present fear of American fascist tendencies, and there's a rather hopeful ending, also in the American tradition. If you are looking for a place to begin reading Sinclair Lewis, BABBITT is an excellent choice. If you already know other Lewis novels, don't miss this one. I would say that with "Main Street", "Elmer Gantry" and "Dodsworth", BABBITT is at the solid gold core of Sinclair Lewis' work. He certainly did deserve that Nobel Prize.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A grand swindle steeped in Edwardian humor By Patto This book was published around 1902, a few years after The Beetle. It's as far as possible from the mood of that gothic fantasy, and illustrates Marsh's amazing ability to hop from one genre to another with ease. I'm not sure how to characterize this highly inventive novel. You might call it a spoof combined with a morality tale - well seasoned with social satire. The plot revolves around a double. James Merrett discovers he bears an exact resemblance to the Marquis of Twickenham, one of the richest peers in England. The Marquis, who was always a bad lot, has disappeared for fifteen years, and his needy relatives wish he could be proved dead, so they could inherit. As it happens, James is a performance artist able to mimic death - to the point of fooling teams of doctors. Perhaps you see where this is going... The plot is a delightful mix of absurd situations, moral perplexities, emotional ups and downs, and startling turns of events. The story is clever, the dialog witty. It would be fun to discuss this book with a friend. Although it's very light, it makes some serious points about human nature. Marsh fans and fans of Edwardian wit are pretty sure to enjoy The Twickenham Peerage.

I found it amusing, a little absurd at times, but generally enjoyable.Obviously, this is not a modern book, but it still has a lot to offer without being grand literature.

That is far from the truth of the Bible! This book takes you through the stages of the lands, letting you know the nationalities that existed in the biblical lands. To understand the Bible, you must understand who they are speaking about as a people and the lands that are talked about. Quite fascinating!!!

Queen, regent, writer, stepmother, survivor - the extraordinary achievements of Kateryn, last wife of Henry VIII By Kirsten In this latest chapter in the Tudor saga, glorious King Henry has receded into a bloated tyrannical child-king, fretfully trying to make sense of his marital history while his latest wife acts as his nurse. The story is narrated by Kateryn Parr, who sets aside her own hopes for marriage with her lover, to become Henry's last queen. While Gregory can only speculate about the thoughts and motives of these colourful historical characters, she does it superbly within a carefully researched historical context.Kateryn is haunted by her predecessors and tries to avoid their fatal "mistakes" yet she also finds that a living queen cannot compete with the dead Jane Seymour, mother to Henry's only living son. She even finds it difficult to deal with Anne of Cleves, who had graciously side-stepped marriage with the King, and was now a favoured member of court. In a double irony that Tudor lovers will appreciate, while Henry's previous wives were obsessed with delivering a healthy male heir, Kateryn is portrayed as terrified of becoming pregnant to Henry, because another failed pregnancy would humiliate the King, endangering her life. While Kateryn navigates these challenges and becomes a loyal loving step-mother to Henry's three motherless children, she also makes her own significant contribution to the era, translating religious passages into English. Gregory's examination of the changing church and attitudes to education, particularly for women, is extremely illuminating. Kateryn also takes the role of Regent when Henry is away at war, competently managing the country in his absence - a formidable task for a young woman who has only previously run a small estate. There are also interesting glimpses of the man Henry could have been if he hadn't been gluttonous for power and for food - a man who respected higher education for women as well as men; a man who was prepared to make changes to the Church.Kateryn's secret love story runs as a recurring thread throughout the book, the lost passion between the lovers creating a dramatic contrast to the sordid sickly business of intimacy with King Henry. This is an excellent finale to the saga of Henry's wives and I'm glad to learn more about Kateryn's achievements as a writer and a Queen. Overall, the book conveys the frighteningly precarious nature of life with despotic and fickle Henry - when a dearly beloved wife or friend can be banished or destroyed at any moment.

By Lynette McClenaghan The story focussing on and told from Kateryn Parr’s perspective leaps into action from the first pages. In keeping with most interpretations Henry the VIII is portrayed as a monster. The story opens with Henry’s proposal and expectation that Kateryn, a 30 year old widow and already passionately in love with Thomas Seymour will marry him. Torn between following her heart and duty to her king and her family, she identifies herself as shrewd and intelligent. As a future Queen her personality resonates more with a modern day woman’s expectations. Knowing that like before her when the attention falls upon a member of the court it is a double edged sword; making the wrong move with brutal and capricious Henry will result in death. This story should appeal to romance fiction readers, although some might consider it a bodice ripper and Kateryn too sexualised for the sixteenth century. Before Kateryn accepts her fate as Henry’s sixth wife, she commiserates with her lover, Seymour, and her sister, Nan, who reminds her of her duty to their family’s legacy and fortune. Phillipa Gregory portrays Kateryn Parr as deeply conflicted with the dead body of her late husband barely cold in the grave, her hopes of marrying her dashing lover doomed when Henry, old, bloated and grotesque, throws himself at her feet. She is not only repulsed by the very thought of marrying Henry, but is terrified that when like her predecessors she falls out of favour she will be dragged to the Tower. As Kateryn faces her fate, Gregory likens Henry VIII more to the murderous Bluebeard than an autocratic and aging monarch.Despite facing the pain of being torn from her lover’s arms, Kateryn Parr is mature and astute enough to recognise that unlike her predecessors it’s essential that she survive. Having grown up within Henry VIII’s court she is only too aware of the importance to gain the King’s favour to serve self-interest. If she must sacrifice love, in the spirit of a 21st Century woman she seeks to command influence and power. However, her ambitions place her in danger with the King’s court where she encounters enemies and must navigate a dangerous path to survive. If you enjoyed Wolf Hall, the Cousins War series and other stories from the Tudor Court novels this one should impress, and I believe surpass them.

A different look at the scholar, nurse-maid and final wife to Henry VIII By Dan & Stacey As the sixth and final wife of Henry the 8th, Kateryn Parr has been remembered in history as an intellectual woman and the final wife of Henry the 8th, more of a nurse-maid to the old corpulent king than a true romantic marriage. She was in love with Thomas Seymour before Henry decreed she be his wife, and bore her duty faithfully and with grace. But Philippa Gregory does an amazing job of taking the historical woman and looking at her through a new perspective. By this time in his life, King Henry is seen as a tyrant, mad with power. But Gregory shows a scenario where there may have been much tenderness between the couple. He always loved doting on his wives, at least while they were still in favor, and Kateryn was no exception. He loved her, albeit the love of an older widower. He constantly brings up Jane Seymour and her sainted qualities often, but is still kind to Kateryn. He trusts and respects her and now that he seems to have tired of chasing women as vigorously as he did in his youth, he's ready for a meeting of the minds. She shows the growing affection between the two in a new and sweet way.Philippa Gregory has been criticized in the past for taking liberties with her stories that aren't supported in historical fact. However, I love her storytelling and she freely admits her books are historical fiction and only depict one way history might have gone in the absence of concrete facts. She carries several themes in this book from the Cousin's War series (The wheel of fortune, a curse on the Tudor line from the princes in the tower) and if you've enjoyed her books in the past or similar authors such as Alison Weir, this will not disappoint either.

Gorgeous photographs lead the reader through 33 of the estate's 175 rooms; along the way, master craftsman Brent Hull and designer Christine G.H. Franck offer detailed measurements and profile sketches of the millwork in each one, creating a complete guide for those interested in replicating Winterthur's classic details.Winterthur, the former residence of collector Henry Francis du Pont, is filled with antiques, decorative items, and architectural salvages from 17th-, 18th- and 19th-centrury America. This book, Traditional American Rooms, highlights some of the most historic rooms in the house and shows off their architectural features, craftsmanship and history. The book highlights the architecture of the times and can provide inspiration to recreate these historic elements in today's homes.Traditional American Rooms, a groundbreaking new volume from Winterthur and Fox Chapel Publishing, is a good0looking - and extremely usefulAn Interior Sourcebook Traditional American Rooms: Celebrating Style, Craftsmanship, and Historic Woodwork by Brent Hull and Christine G.H. Franck, with a preface by Maggie Lidz and foreword by Barbra Streisand Fox Chapel Publishing, East Petersburg, PA; 2009 180 pages; softcover; 297 illustrations; $35 ISBN 978-1-56523-322-5 Reviewed by Clem Labine Traditional American Rooms, a groundbreaking new volume from Winterthur and Fox Chapel Publishing, is a good-looking - and extremely useful - design guide and tutorial on the creation of classic interior architecture. The "campus" for this illustrated lecture-series-in-print is the treasure house of period rooms at the Winterthur Museum and Country Estate in Winterthur, DE. Winterthur contains the largest publicly accessible collection of authentic Early American interior architectural millwork in the U.S. Its 175 interior spaces - rooms, halls, alcoves and stairwells - are a 3D textbook on Classical architectural millwork from 1640 through 1840. Instructors for this exploration of traditional American moldings and paneling are Brent Hull and Christine Franck. Millwork-meister Brent Hull is this country's leading authority on historic woodwork (having authored a number of books on the topic), as well as a design consultant and president of Hull Historical, an architectural millwork company in Ft. Worth, TX. Christine Franck is a Palladio Award-winning architectural designer, author and educator, as well as a board member of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Classical America. The Winterthur period rooms that provide the reference materials for this volume are the result of the collecting passion of Henry Francis du Pont. From 1929 thru the 1960s, du Pont purchased historical rooms - and whole houses - along the entire Atlantic Seaboard, and had the antique woodwork reassembled in what was originally du Pont's home by an in-house crew of carpenters, masons and painters. Prior to Winterthur opening to the public as a museum in 1951, du Pont moved out and turned the entire establishment over to his collections. Although there are many books about the gardens, furniture and decorative arts at Winterthur, little has been done to document the vast collection of historic architectural millwork contained in the 175 interior spaces. This historic woodwork sourcebook sets out to fill this void. Covering primarily the Georgian and Federal periods, Hull and Franck focus on 20 of Winterthur's most representative rooms and examine the history and changing styles of millwork throughout the pre-1840 era. Analysis of each room features a combination of color photography, a cataloging of the architectural details and commentary on each element. The breakdown of each space includes close-up photos of millwork details, and profiles of all the moldings drawn to scale - with the scale carefully indicated. Also noted are the overall dimensions of each room being dissected, because the moldings are all scaled to the size of the room. If a designer wanted to adapt these historic moldings to a room of greater or lesser size, the moldings would have to be re-scaled appropriately. It should be noted that this book is primarily about moldings and paneling; mantels are not covered to any great extent. There are 145 historic mantels at Winterthur and they deserve (and will get) a book of their own. Also, floor plans of the rooms are not shown for spatial reasons, but the overall room dimensions provided give the designer sufficient context. The book's introduction shows how the master builders who created the original millwork for these rooms were all working from precedents of the Baroque, Palladian, and Neoclassical styles as practiced in England. The book also delineates the subtle shifts in design as the formal Georgian style gave way to the more inventive and free-flowing Federal style. It's worth noting that the Winterthur rooms are very much Classical, but not necessarily "historic" in the pure sense. As Winterthur Estate Historian Maggie Lidz points out in her preface: " the historic woodwork was not installed at Winterthur as it had been at its original location. The materials were reassembled and very much modified to fit modern needs and tastes." As has always been true in the Classical tradition, in constructing the Winterthur rooms the basic building blocks of the Classical language were adapted and interpreted by designers who were well-educated in the principles of Classicism. They created interiors spaces that were - at one and the same time - entirely new, and yet well within the tradition of the Classical canon. Designers should be aware that few of the historical profiles (less than 10%) shown in the book are available as standard lumberyard profiles these days. However, Winterthur has licensed Hull Historical to reproduce its period millwork, and Hull has created molding knives that can replicate all of the millwork in the Winterthur period rooms. But as noted above, if the moldings are intended for a room of a size different than at Winterthur, the moldings should be re-proportioned accordingly. Both design professionals and clients will find this a work of great merit. Clients can use the volume to train their eyes and perhaps even to help educate their designers. For architects and interior designers, this sourcebook is of obvious utility in specifying both types of moldings and their distribution in the creation of refined traditional interiors. And what a great selling point to be able to say in client presentations: "This design is just like Winterthur!" Franck is a designer and educator specializing in classical architecture.Traditional American Rooms is mentioned during an interview with Brent Hull. From the foreward... I was so happy to read this book. It shows exactly what you and your builder need to know to create traditional American rooms with grace and style. A few years ago, when I was designing and about to build my own home to house my collection of 18th century American furniture and early 20th century decorative arts, I had the pleasure of spending two days at the Winterthur Museum. Their indoor street inspired me to build my own. Mr. Du Pont focused on American antiques and furnishings, something in which I take great interest, at a time when many of his peers were collecting European objects. His eye for detail and style is demonstrated not only by Winterthur, but also by his work for Jackie Kennedy at the White House in the 1960s. That gave me great direction as to the authentic moldings I required. What makes Mr. Du Pont unique is his passion for collecting American culture, and the extent of his collections: not only the objects but the very rooms themselves, 175 of them. The rooms date from 1640 to 1860 and come from 12 of the 13 original American colonies. These architectural interiors represent a beautiful cross section of American interiors, from the very highest style rooms of Newport and Philadelphia to the simple taverns of New Hampshire, from the houses of rich merchants to those of simple tradesmen. It is a remarkable window on the history of our people, and of the material culture that enabled and enriched their lives. It is these architectural interiors that my friend, Brent Hull celebrates in his book, Traditional American Rooms. The beauty of these historic rooms resides in the principles of classical scale and proportion, as Brent demonstrates with his careful measurements and lovely drawings. These rooms feel right because they are right: they are based on the Classical structure of American interior architecture, the ancient truths discovered in Greece and Rome. A study of these rooms gives us insight into how the ancient master-builders designed and planned their homes, and of how we may plan and build ours. Traditional American Rooms celebrates the things I love: beautiful architecture, authentic American furniture and art, and Classic style. I'm a great admirer of Winterthur and of Mr. du Pont's vision of decorating and design. I am delighted that this book celebrates these interiors in such a wonderful American fashion.Richly illustrated and researched. After the success of Brent Hull's first book, on the history of architectural millwork, this collaboration with historic Winterthur has been keenly anticipated. And the resulting publication was worth the wait: this is a wonderful "interpretation" of the historic rooms in Winterthur, through the eyes of a millwork expert and a savvy architectural historian. A beautiful publication with "meat on its bones." Will appeal to the collector, preservationist and professional tradesman and period homeowner (new or old)!Charity Designer Showhouse is anything but run-of-the-mill Builder Brent Hull uses his expertise in historical millwork to bring a lost art to Fort Worth's Charity Designer Showhouse By CATHY FRISINGER cfrisinger@star-telegram.com Brent Hull started out as a teacher, and he's still a teacher of sorts. But now instead of teaching English to high schoolers, he's teaching their parents about the golden rectangle, about the relationship between the Ionic column and the female body, about the difference between Georgian and Federalist millwork, and why a room that's classically proportioned just feels comfortable. Hull is a Fort Worth builder, but, more important, he is a nationally recognized expert in historical millwork - the intricate moldings, mantels, cabinets, doors and paneled walls found in America's finest historic homes - and he's working to revive that centuries-old aesthetic. "When the Greeks and Romans were looking at how to build to their buildings, they looked to nature," Hull says, explaining that the proportions of the Tuscan column are taken from the proportions of the male body. Finger to hand, hand to arm, the entire body is composed in a 3-to-5 ratio that is naturally pleasing to the eye, he explains. For centuries, builders used those natural proportions in designing homes, but today that's been discarded. "I believe we are in the Dark Ages of architecture in America," Hull says. "We are a how-to country; we've forgotten the why-to. We've just flat forgotten how to put things together, and it's just ridiculous how low the standard is. My goal is to educate people about what's right." Hull inhaled the tenets of classical architecture while attending the North Bennet Street School in Boston in the early '90s. He left there with a degree in preservation architecture and a fire in his heart to spread his newfound knowledge. He started small, creating custom moldings and doors in his brother's garage, but the business grew fast and his reputation even faster. His company, Hull Historical Millwork, has done restoration work across the country, including on many of Texas' old courthouse gems. His company's millwork has always been done by hand. Hull began building homes and incorporating quality millwork into those new homes. He writes for magazines, speaks to builder and architect groups, and generally does all he can to spread the word about the warmth, comfort and visual appeal of homes that include classically styled millwork. In 2003, his first book, Historic Millwork (John Wiley, $85), took a look at millwork from 1870 to 1940. That year, he was approached by the Winterthur Museum in Delaware about an association with the one-of-a-kind museum. Winterthur houses a collection of antiques amassed by collector Henry F. du Pont in 175 rooms assembled from architecturally significant 16th-, 17th- and 18th-century homes. Hull is now a Winterthur licensee, meaning he is licensed to sell millwork that reproduces ornamentation in Winterthur rooms, which fits with his goal of reawakening a classical aesthetic in contemporary building. Area residents see just what that means at the 2008 Historic Fort Worth Charity Designer Showhouse. Hull, the lead builder for the 6,000-square-foot showhouse, adorned four rooms - the family room, dining room, study and master bedroom - with millwork from the Georgian period (1725-75) inspired by rooms at Winterthur. Each has a fireplace with a mantel surrounded by elaborate moldings and carved panels. Walking into these rooms is like stepping into a room at Monticello. The upstairs features millwork from the Federalist period (1775-1825), though it is less elaborate. Hull has a new book coming out in March. While his first book was aimed at professionals, Traditional American Rooms (Fox Chapel, $35) is aimed at general readership. It looks at Winterthur's preserved rooms, progressing chronologically through the Georgian and Federalist eras of building. Hull is a happy man, like men with a strong sense of purpose are. "I found a great niche. I love what I do," he says. "It's kind of like rediscovering a lost art." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Historic Fort Worth Charity Designer Showhouse Location: 5101 Cliffrose Lane, Fort Worth Hours: 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays through Nov. 15; noon-4 p.m. Sundays through Nov. 16; 5:30-8 p.m. Thursdays. .
