Review (in full The Innocents Abroad; or, The New Pilgrims' Progress) A humorous travel narrative by Mark Twain, published in 1869 and based on Twain's letters to newspapers about his 1867 steamship voyage to Europe, Egypt, and the Holy Land. The Innocents Abroad sharply satirized tourists who learn what they should see and feel by reading guidebooks. Assuming the role of a keen-eyed, shrewd Westerner, Twain was refreshingly honest and vivid in describing foreign scenes and his reactions to them. He alternated serious passages--history, statistics, description, explanation, argumentation--with risible ones. The humor itself was varied, sometimes in the vein of the Southwestern yarn spinners, sometimes in that of contemporaneous humorists such as Artemus Ward and Josh Billings, who chiefly used burlesque and parody and other verbal devices. --The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

From the Publisher 14 1.5-hour cassettes

From the Inside Flap The Innocents Abroad is one of the most prominent and influential travel books ever written about Europe and the Holy Land. In it, the collision of the American ?New Barbarians? and the European ?Old World? provides much comic fodder for Mark Twain?and a remarkably perceptive lens on the human condition. Gleefully skewering the ethos of American tourism in Europe, Twain?s lively satire ultimately reveals just what it is that defines cultural identity. As Twain himself points out, ?Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one?s lifetime.? And Jane Jacobs observes in her Introduction, ?If the reader is American, he may also find himself on a tour of his own psyche.?

M Mills Mark Twain is the Lincoln of our literature. Sam Clemens (1835-1910) wrote Huckleberry Finn in 1885 which has been acclaimed as our greatest American novel. Lesser known are his wonderful travelogues: "Roughing It' "Following the Equator"; "Life on the Mississippi and "The Innocents Abroad" published in 1869. This book is worth reading even 140 years after its publication. Twain style is a joy to read for he was a born storyteller and communicates his thoughts well on the page. Twain was a reporter who joined the six month expedition to Europe and the Middle East on board the steamer "Quaker City." The pleasure tour hadbeen organized by the famous pastor Henry Ward Beecher (sibling of Harriet Ward Beecher) and Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman. Neither of these notable made the trip citing other obligations. Twain roomed with a young man from Elmira New York. He would later visit Elmira and meet his friend's sister Olivia. She would become his wife and the mother of the couple's three daughters. The Innocents Abroad is a long book of 400,000 words covering over 500 densely written pages. Twain takes a sardonic, humorous view of European art as he guides us through the Louvre, Florence Italy and Rome. We visit London, Paris and meet with Czar Alexander II in the Crimea. Twain had a keen reporter's eye and a humorist's ability to paint word pictures of his fellow passengers, tour guides and natives of the fascinating cities and countries he visited on a busy itinerary. As a Presbyterian pastor I found the most interesting part of the book dealt with Twain's tour of Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, Greece and Israel. He was upset by the filth, disease and cruelty he saw in the land of Moses and Jesus Christ. Despite all his asides and digressions the observant reader can gain a good picture of what these places were like in 1869. Twain was an agnostic but knew his Bible. Mark Twain was our greatest author. In this fine book you will get to know this fascinating man better as he shares his globe trotting journey with his readers.

By A Customer Ok, maybe that is a minor overstatement, but this is one hilarous book, to be read by people who have travelled, who plan to travel, and generally, people who want to laugh. A lot.The book is also surprising for its timeless points about the journeying of certain upper white, middle class people going on a grand tour of Europe. I frequently had to remind myself that it was written in 1869 because his observations and the behavior of his shipmates is so close to the way people I studied abroad with acted-only a few years ago.Twain also puts those "cosmopolitan" people who claim to have traveled, but don't know anything about any place they have been but and just like to lord it over everyone else that they have "travelled" and you have not.Reading this book is like listening to a very wise, old man tell you about his adventures. Its not like a book, more like one long conversation. Twain takes nothing seriously-not himself, his fellow travelers or the places they visit. The words are another adventure-sometimes, you know he is setting you up for something, other times he is serious for a while, then you end up in the middle of a joke.I know this is against the rules, but the other posters who don't like this book-don't be so serious and p.c. all the time. Twain is making humorous observations, at a time when a different standard was acceptable. Not to mention, he does manage to get a few zingers in there about what people are willing to accept and what they do not.You will laugh yourself silly and want to book a trip-not to Europe, just to anywhere, after reading this book.

Having successfully concluded the upheaval of the War Between the States, the people of the USA, while bruised, felt confident. Their sense of righteousness was enhanced - they'd quelled a rebellion and freed slaves. Some took that attitude to other lands. The 1867 SS Quaker City excursion to Europe and the "Holy Land" was but one of those forays. It was special in that it carried one of the more discerning observers the United States had produced - Sam Clemens of Hannibal, Missouri and points West. He was to post letters to the San Francisco newspaper "Daily Alta California" describing the journey. The trip and the account opened Clemens' eyes and those of his readers over numerous legends. In Clemens' baggage was a strong religious sense imparted by his mother, Jane. This cargo was balanced by Twain's more worldly experience on the Mississippi and his life in the mining communities in the West. When he crossed the gangplank to board the steamer, his gaze was sceptical and his pen ascerbic. His portrayal of the Quaker City's passengers began as they traversed the Atlantic, but it is his depiction of "foreigners" in their homelands that both shocks and enlightens. Starting with the Azores stopover, Clemens' observations of the islands are a tribute to their charms. Of the people, however, he has little positive to impart. They are dirty, noisy, conniving and devious. In general, they're "not American".The use of the "innocents" is exemplified by Twain's description of contact with the Europeans. Educated in the minimal language training of the day, the travellers struggled to impart their wishes in French shops and restaurants. Twain seems to lay responsibility for this on the French "failure to understand their own language", but his description of the exchanges makes it clear where the problem lay. There was another side to this coin, however. Europeans were caught up in their own affairs. The United States was a remote and unknown element to them - "they'd had a war with somebody recently". Twain notes his shipmates were even then tinged with the arrogance that would fully blossom later. Respect for "tradition" had a variety of expressions in the "Quaker City" passengers. Twain depicts them all with delightful detachment. As the ship made landfall in Mediterranean ports, Clemens and his comrades visit the "standard" tourist haunts. Paris is a must, Genoa is a treat, Rome is a maze of cathedrals and art galleries. Quickly disenchanted with "guides" he renames them all "Ferguson" and rebukes them at every opportunity. Michaelangelo seems so pervasive in Rome that the Pilgrims ask if Greek or Egyptian artefacts are his work - to the consternation of the "Ferguson" of the day. Twain's flexibility and ability to adapt to events leads some of the "innocents" to take the train from Rome to Naples - a city under quarantine. While the "Quaker City" lies still in the harbour, Twain and his companions tour the city and visit Vesuvius. A similar ploy works in Greece. It is in the "Holy Land" that Clemens' descriptive powers and distrust of "authorities" flowers most brilliantly. Like many of his fellow passengers, he's been subjected to many tales from "Scripture" and a spate of earlier travel writers in Palestine. Unable to criticise the Bible outright, he lets the words speak for themselves, allowing logic and common sense to question dogma. The effusive travel writers, who had insisted Palestine was a "paradise" are brought out in contrast with Twain's observations of the barren desolation that was the Levant. He is scathing in his criticism of people who fabricate conditions there in order to sell their books. His veracity, of course, nearly had the opposite effect. "The Innocents Abroad" manuscript was originally rejected by Twain's publisher.Sam Clemens' reputation was "made" with this book. It touched on many aspects of how people in the United States viewed themselves and the world. The subtle, but incisive, comments on tradition and legend were seeds finding fertile ground in a dynamic nation setting the practical foremost. "Innocents" was a challenge to dogmas and a paean to the sense of "realism" that permeated the post-Civil War era. The "Romantic" Era, still evident in mid-19th Century in the earlier accounts of Palestine, would be whisked aside. "Innocents" would be instrumental in that sweeping it away. No journey is more iconic in Americans' hearts than that of Lewis and Clark. Their expedition (1804-1806) was the first transcontinental exploration conducted by the United States.

From the Back Cover In 1803, when the United States purchased Louisiana from France, the great expanse of this new American territory was a blank - not only on the map but in our knowledge. President Thomas Jefferson keenly understood that the course of the nation's destiny lay westward and that a national "Voyage of Discovery" must be mounted to determine the nature and accessibility of the frontier. He commissioned his young secretary, Meriwether Lewis, to lead an intelligence-gathering expedition from the Missouri River to the northern Pacific coast and back. From 1804 to 1806, Lewis, accompanied by co-captain William Clark, the Shoshone guide Sacajawea, and thirty-two men, made the first trek across the Louisiana Purchase, mapping the rivers as he went, tracing the principal waterways to the sea, and establishing the American claim to the territories of Idaho, Washington, and Oregon. Together the captains kept a journal, a richly detailed record of the flora and fauna they sighted, the Indian tribes they encountered, and the awe-inspiring landscape they traversed, from their base camp near present-day St. Louis to the mouth of the Columbia River. In keeping this record they made an incomparable contribution to the literature of exploration and the writing of natural history.

By Mike Powers To me, the Lewis and Clark expedition ranks as one of the greatest voyages of discovery in human history. Because of the scientific and geographical discoveries that were made, it stands in significance alongside the travels of Marco Polo, the journeys of Christopher Columbus, Ferdinand Magellan, and James Cook, and the Apollo 11 mission to the moon. This one-volume edition of Lewis' and Clark's masterpiece is outstanding in every way. Edited by the late Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Bernard DeVoto (1897-1955), it allows the reader to gain a fuller understanding of the Lewis and Clark expedition through the words of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark themselves.Lewis and Clark's expedition begins in 1804, taking the 33-person Corps of Discovery from St. Louis, Missouri to the Pacific Ocean and back again (a distance of over 8,000 miles). Among other things, it results in the initial exploration and mapping of the Great Plains and Pacific Northwest, and the description and classification of over 100 never-before seen species of flora and fauna. In addition, it dispells the myth of a northwest passage to the orient, and opens up the vast central and western regions of the continent to commerce with the United States.Captain Meriwether Lewis, the commander of the Corps of Discovery, is instructed by President Thomas Jefferson to keep a journal of the daily events, scientific observations, and measurements of latitude and longitude along the way. Both he and his co-commander, Captain (in reality Lieutenant) William Clark follow Jefferson's instructions, although not always faithfully.Lewis and Clark return from their 30-month long expedition as national heroes. Jefferson expects Lewis to oversee the quick publication of the Journals, but Lewis, for a variety of reasons, disappoints the President. He fails miserably as governor of the Louisiana territory; he suffers from depression and alcoholism. In 1809, he (it is surmised by historians) takes his own life, never having submitted so much as one page of the Journals' manuscript to an editor. After Lewis' suicide, Clark teams with editor Nicholas Biddle and completes a short, narrative version of the Lewis and Clark journals. Published in 1814, it contains none of the scientific data compiled during the expedition. Not until 1904 are the Journals of Lewis and Clark published in their entirety, with all of the explorers' scientific observations included.Bernard DeVoto begins this volume with a well crafted 60-page introduction that explains the historical background to the Lewis and Clark expedition. Then, DeVoto gets out of the way and allows Lewis, Clark, and, on occasion, other members of the Corps of Discovery, to convey with their own words the drama, excitement and high adventure of this magnificent undertaking. Most of the more routine scientific data has been edited out, leaving behind Lewis and Clark's outstanding descriptions of the expedition's key events. It is not easy to forget Lewis' florid prose, through which he so emotionally and enthusiastically describes his initial sighting of the Great Falls of the Missouri and the Rocky Mountains, or his encounters with the Nez Perce' and Blackfoot native tribes. DeVoto does, however, keep in a few of the more famous journal entries dealing with scientific observations. Lewis' descriptions of the wildlife, plants and physical geography along the route of the expedition show him to be a gifted naturalist, perhaps one of the finest in history. One not of caution: while they are very enjoyable, "The Journals of Lewis and Clark" have a tendency to make for taxing reading. This is because the editor left Lewis' and Clark's grammar and spelling almost completely intact. (Both men had an excellent ability to hold their readers' interest with their colorful and dramatic prose, but they were both atrocious spellers.)This edition of "The Journals of Lewis and Clark" is highly entertaining and well researched. It's the best and most essential volume for those who do not wish to read the complete multi-volume version of this work. Most highly recommended.

Young The introduction to this book, written by Stephen Ambrose, states that the Journals of Lewis and Clark are an American treasure. At first this seemed like hyperbole, but while reading the Journals, it became clearer why this statement was made. For in the Journals the reader sees in the mind's eye the vast prairies, indominitable mountains, wide, powerful rivers, and vast Pacific Ocean as Lewis and Clark saw them. Through the Journals the reader encounters Indian tribes, both friendly and fierce. At other times, the puzzling descriptions of previously unknown species of animals and plants give insight as to what discovery and exploration mean. This is what makes the Journals a national treasure. Reading the Journals gives the contemporary reader a sense of what it was like to look at the American West for the first time. In an era when there are precious few corners of the earth that have not been mapped, the Journals convey reader to a time when exploration was not only commonplace, but a necessity for national survival. The Journals of Lewis and Clark are not particularly easy to read at times if you are not accustomed to the reading genre of travel diaries. Also, at times, the terse writing style of William Clark made the Journal difficult to "plow" through. Merriweather Lewis' entries were much more readable, but his entries do not appear until after the first quarter or so of this edition. If you are a person who likes maps, the number of maps is low and and the detail they provide is small. There may be other versions of the Journals out there that provide better maps. The commentaries provided before certain chapters that summarize the events that the Journals are about to relate are very helpful in understanding the narratives that follow. For the reader not well versed in the Corps of Discovery, I am not sure if the Journals of Lewis and Clark is the best book to read first when learning about their expedition. Undaunted Courage or another such book might a be better first choice if you want to build a curriculum on Lewis and Clark. Looking back, I would suggest reading the Journals in tandem with such a book, to get a balance between the two styles: historical narrative and diary.Regardless of how the reader approaches the Journals, either by itself or in conjunction with other works, at some point, the critical reader will consult if not read the Journals of Lewis and Clark for a broader perspective on the secondary histories.

To the source material itself, the journals, I would award five stars out of five--six out of five, even, spelling errors and all, for it's absolutely superb stuff. I have read a fair bit in the adventure and exploration line of literature, but nothing as good as these journals for conveying what it felt like to be on such an expedition. Often, it is the little detail at the end of a day's entry that works the magic; for example, when you read several dozen times about the mosquitoes and gnats being "verry troublesome," or "exceedingly troublesome," it tells you something. As does Lewis's quiet contentment with a bellyful of fresh meat after a long and weary hike. And, as Stephen Ambrose notes in his moving and evocative foreword to this book, the fact that these are on-the-fly journal entries--not memoirs--means that the reader sees the good and the bad choices, the discovery that went on along the way. You will probably recognize at once, for instance, that not all grizzlies will be as easy to kill as the first one the corps encounters, but they don't know that, and you are there to read of their changing opinion of these bears as they meet more and more of them. So the raw material is first rate. The second part of my review would be for the editing, and I would give that four stars out of five. DeVoto, for all his erudition, does make something of a nuisance of himself from time to time. In the first place, he was clearly writing for the "Manifest Destiny" camp of historians--an outlook now taken with a few grains of salt. Here he is, for example, commenting on the earliest hostile encounter with an Indian tribe, "Indian bluster immediately collapsed and from then on the terrible Tetons were mere beggars. The moral of the episode was that a new breed of white men had come to the Upper Missouri, one that could not be scared or bullied. The moral was flashed along the Indian underground faster than the expedition traveled. It explains why the captains were received with such solicitous respect by the Arikaras," etc (p.34). So there's a bit of that sort of thing to put up with. Also, for reasons I cannot fathom, DeVoto inserts bridging passages, paraphrases, in certain spots rather than using actual journal entries. One of these is the death and burial of the expedition's one fatality. How did the captains and the other men react to this? I would have liked to know that. There's another such paraphrase covering Sacagawea's incredible meeting with her long-lost brother. What did Lewis and Clark think of that amazing coincidence? We're not told by this book. All in all, however, this is a magnificent read, and my quibbles above don't detract materially from its enjoyment. If I have one suggestion for anyone looking to read this, however, it would be to view Ken Burns's extraordinary PBS documentary on the expedition first; your library should have it.

Of course, Poe's tales do reflect an older, 19th century style and sensibility of story-telling. Because of that that they may seem overly descriptive and not "exciting" enough to some modern readers, but those who can appreciate Poe's use of language and his uncanny ability to create and sustain an eerie atmosphere will certainly relish the entries in this small collection. It amazes me, however, that the author's name is (or at least WAS) misspelled in the Kindle Store's descriptive blurb. His name is Edgar Allan Poe (with an "A" in "Allan") NOT Edgar Allen Poe (with an "E"). Be that as it may, this is a well-formatted collection of 7 stories. Five are in the horror/terror mode, and two ("The Purloined Letter" and "The Murders in the Rue Morgue") are mysteries starring the early fictional detective, C. Auguste Dupin (whose methodology was later imitated by countless other authors of detective fiction, including Doyle). The book has an active TOC, but there is no introduction, and neither explanatory notes nor illustrations are provided. Nevertheless, as a freebie, it is certainly worth acquiring. Should it ever cease to be free, however, I would recommend purchasing a COMPLETE edition of his works instead; first, because you get a whole lot more great Poe that way (stories, poems, essays); and second, because there are so many inexpensive, complete sets available in the Kindle Store to choose from. (For my "keeper copy" I opted for a particularly well-formatted edition costing only $.99 from Top Five Books; to see it type "Poe Top Five Books" in the Kindle Store searchbox.) Of course ALL his works, being in the public domain, may also be had for free, but a complete bundle is very convenient and provides instant gratification -- not to mention a lifetime of reading and re-reading pleasure.

I have to give this particular ebook 5 stars for many reasons but the main being that the authors/publishers have chosen to share Poe's work for free through this medium. I note this and stress on it so heavily because there are many other ebook versions out there where people are charging up to $5 or more for everything that is included in this (all of the work is in the public domain and I find it quite dishonorable to charge money for text that can be found through a quick google search). Also, top quality formatting!

Plenty of thrills and chills in the 5 horror tales and some excellent plotting and puzzlement in the two mysteries. Heck, even if you are a dyed-in-the-wool Poe fan, this is a nifty little collection. All gems, all worth reading again and again.

In this story, everyone (including the heroine) are ready to excuse any strange behavior just because the woman is beautiful and can't believe such a person can be evil by nature. I enjoyed it as one of the first books I read for free on my Kindle. I would recommend it highly to anyone who enjoys an old-fashioned murder mystery. It's well worth the time you put into it. I was sorry when I got to the end.

I started reading and found it about impossible to put down. The heroine was perfect, the criminals (especially Jean) were ruthless . The book flowed evenly, until the part that made my jaw drop from surprise! The ending was pretty abrupt, but I guess there was no point in going further. Mr. Wallace put out a wonderful book, that is about honest and good people, as well as the devious killers without the gore and bad language so prevalent today.

By Don Kidwell Preceded by a fine, several page long introduction/biography of the author together with mentions/short synapses of films, television and plays of which is based on his body of works. I'm going to spend long hours watching many of these gems so long as I can find them on Netflix. Sort of wishing there was an ability to jump immediately to the story but a very good book, nonetheless!

224 of 232 people found the following review helpful. A great volume in a great series of novels By Robert Moore This is the second of the six Barsetshire novels, and the first great novel in that series. THE WARDEN, while pleasant, primarily serves as a prequel to this novel. To be honest, if Trollope had not gone on to write BARCHESTER TOWERS, there would not be any real reason to read THE WARDEN. But because it introduces us to characters and situations that are crucial to BARCHESTER TOWERS, one really ought to have read THE WARDEN before reading this novel.Trollope presents a dilemma for most readers. On the one hand, he wrote an enormous number of very good novels. On the other hand, he wrote no masterpieces. None of Trollope's books can stand comparison with the best work of Jane Austen, Flaubert, Dickens, George Eliot, Tolstoy, or Dostoevsky. On the other hand, none of those writers wrote anywhere near as many excellent as Trollope did. He may not have been a very great writer, but he was a very good one, and perhaps the most prolific good novelist who ever lived. Conservatively assessing his output, Trollope wrote at least 20 good novels. Trollope may not have been a genius, but he did possess a genius for consistency. So, what to read? Trollope's wrote two very good series, two other novels that could be considered minor classics, and several other first rate novels. I recommend to friends that they try the Barsetshire novels, and then, if they find themselves hooked, to go on to read the Political series of novels (sometimes called the Palliser novels, which I feel uncomfortable with, since it exaggerates the role of that family in most of the novels). The two "minor classics" are THE WAY WE LIVE NOW and HE KNEW HE WAS RIGHT. The former is a marvelous portrait of Victorian social life, and the latter is perhaps the finest study of human jealousy since Shakespeare's OTHELLO. BARSETSHIRE TOWERS is, therefore, coupled with THE WARDEN, a magnificent place, and perhaps the best place to enter Trollope's world. There are many, many reasons to read Trollope. He probably is the great spokesperson for the Victorian Mind. Like most Victorians, he is a bit parochial, with no interest in Europe, and very little interest in the rest of the world. Despite THE AMERICAN SENATOR, he has few American's or colonials in his novels, and close to no foreigners of any type. He is politically liberal in a conservative way, and is focussed almost exclusively on the upper middle class and gentry. He writes a good deal about young men and women needing and hoping to marry, but with a far more complex approach than we find in Jane Austen. His characters are often compelling, with very human problems, subject to morally complex situations that we would not find unfamiliar. Trollope is especially good with female characters, and in his sympathy for and liking of very independent, strong females he is somewhat an exception of the Victorian stereotype.Anyone wanting to read Trollope, and I heartily believe that anyone who loves Dickens, Austen, Eliot, Hardy, and Thackery will want to, could find no better place to start than with reading the first two books in the Barsetshire Chronicles, beginning first with the rather short THE WARDEN and then progressing to this very, very fun and enjoyable novel.

74 of 76 people found the following review helpful. The great Victorian comic novel? By Austin Elliott "Barchester Towers" has proven to be the most popular novel Anthony Trollope ever wrote-despite the fact that most critics would rank higher his later work such as "The Last Chronicle of Barset","He Knew He Was Right" and "The Way We Live Now".While containing much satire those great novels are very powerful and disturbing, and have little of the genial good humor that pervades "Barchester Towers".Indeed after "Barchester Towers",Trollope would never write anything so funny again-as if comedy was something to be eschewed. That is too bad, because the book along with its predecessor "The Warden" are the closest a Victorian novelist ever came to approximating Jane Austen."Barchester Towers" presents many unforgettable characters caught in a storm of religious controversy, political and social power struggles and romantic and sexual imbroglios. All of this done with a light but deft hand that blends realism, idealism and some irresistible comedy. It has one of the greatest endings in all of literature-a long, elaborate party at a country manor(which transpires for about a hundred pages)where all of the plot's threads are inwoven and all of the character's intrigues come to fruition."Barchester Towers" has none of the faults common to Trollope's later works -(such as repetiveness)it is enjoyable from beginning to end.Henry James(one of our best novelists, but not one of our best critics) believed that Trollope peaked with "The Warden"and that the subsequent work showed a falling off as well as proof that Trollope was no more than a second rate Thackeray. For the last fifty years critics have been trying to undo the damage that was done to Trollope's critical reputation."Barchester Towers"proves not only to be a first rate novel but probably the most humorous Victorian novel ever written.

51 of 53 people found the following review helpful. An astonishingly well-written humorous drama By Ritesh Laud Superb. One of the finest novels I've read. Trollope's most popular work and the second in the Chronicles of Barset series. I never read the first one "The Warden" and didn't feel like I needed to, the first couple chapters of Towers supply enough background to know what happened in the first book, at least in a broad sense.Initially, the backdrop of a looming clerical power struggle in the pastoral English town of Barchester and environs is convincingly weighty. However, as this power struggle plays out it becomes apparent that Trollope is for the most part poking fun at players on both sides of the battle. He reminds us that despite the detachment and solemnity that such a conflict deserves, it's only human to be looking out for one's own interests as most of the characters end up doing. Trollope accomplishes this through brilliant characterization and a rich plot that keeps the reader interested and never bogs down.Towers is incredibly humorous, both in the dialogue of the characters and in Trollope's third person omniscient narration. There were so many scenes of dumbfoundingly witty humor that if I didn't have other books to move on to I'd go back through and catalog all of the humorous bits for posterity. Dickens' "Pickwick Papers" is just as humorous, but it's more slapstick and deals more with situations. Trollope's humor is in wordplay and hyperbole. For example, when the awkward and unattractive Mr. Slope is soon to declare his love for the stunningly beautiful Signora Neroni, he takes her hand and this is how Trollope describes it:"Mr. Slope was big, awkward, cumbrous, and having his heart in his pursuit, was ill at ease. The lady was fair, as we have said, and delicate; everything about her was fine and refined; her hand in his looked like a rose lying among carrots, and when he kissed it he looked as a cow might do on finding such a flower among her food."I will never forget the analogy of a woman's hand in a man's looking like a rose lying among carrots. Most of my friends aren't readers so I don't often enthuse to them about novels I've enjoyed, but you can bet I'll be recommending this to them as one of many reasons books are far worthier of one's time than TV and movies. This is one of those for which I can be jealous of anyone who'll be reading it for the first time. Don't miss it. Also, Trollope was a prolific writer and I've heard he's got a couple other gems. Based on other reviews, I added "The Last Chronicle of Barset", "The Way We Live Now", and "He Knew He Was Right" to my collection.

Intricate illustrations depict details of a modern quilt inspired by Sibylle von Olfers' classic storybook Mother Earth and Her Children This vibrant new translation, in turn inspired by the quilt, explores the changing of the seasons and delicately touches upon the circle of life. When Mother Earth calls her children to prepare for spring, the earthly children yawn and stretch before they busy themselves with beautification. They dust off the bumblebees, scrub the beetles, paint bright new coats on the ladybugs, and rouse the caterpillars from their cocoons. Bedecked with new blossoms, the children emerge from the earth and become spring flowers that frolic through the summer and autumn, until the leaves begin to fall and they return to Mother Earth, bringing the weary bugs and beetles back to their winter refuge.

Just a retelling of the Root Children By Musikal If you are a fan of gentle stories and old-fashioned children's books, such as those used for Waldorf education, you've probably read Story of the Root Children #1491 by Sibylle Von Olfers. It's a lovely story, so I searched by other books by the same author and came across this title, and ordered it sight unseen. The book was not what I expected. It is not a new story by the same author, but rather a paraphrased retelling of The Story of the Root Children. Instead of the original illustrations, the pictures are photographs of a quilt that was created based on the original book. I did not realize that "Mother Earth and Her Children" and "The Story of the Root Children" were one and the same, I wish that was a little more clear in the product description.Don't get me wrong, the quilt is absolutely amazing and spectacular. I'm in awe of how anyone was able to create it, the quilt is a work of art. The dust jacket can be removed and has a little poster on the backside of the full quilt. If you are a fan of quilts or quilting, you will probably appreciate the book just for the beauty of the quilt. And if you are a huge fan of the original Root Children, you may also want this book just to see this lovely "fan art," if you will. However, if you're like me, and are looking for Waldorf-style picture books, you'll probably prefer the original story with Von Olfer's gentle watercolor illustrations. There's not really a reason to have both of the books, as it is the same story, and basically the same pictures (the quilt is simply a sewn version of the original watercolors.)This book does have one advantage over the original in that the colors are brighter and the paper quality (at least on the hardcover) is very good and glossy. It's a better quality book than The Story of the Root Children I purchased on Amazon , which did not have the highest quality reproductions and was a little grainy and washed out in places. Also, if you have a very young child you may prefer the shorter text in this version. Otherwise, plan on picking up the original version.

Now I want it for myself. On every level this book is a treasure: as gorgeous textile art, as sweet children's literature, as a wonder-filled treatise on the changing seasons. It's a hopeful book of innocent beauty and charm.

Mother Earth and her Children By Picture Perfect What a delightful book for children!!This "quilted" fairy tale is so magnificently illustrated! Seglinde Schoen Smith holds nothing back in her quest for detailing each and every one of the teeny, tiny bugs, flowers and children. I love the way they each have their own little jobs to do. Wonderfully done. .It'll make you smile!!

A look at some of the most intriguing and inspiring uses of the humble shed The shed: A place of retreat, where we can forget the pressures of everyday life, work on a treasured project, store all those keepsakes we can't bear to throw away, or spend time with friends or with ourselves in silent meditation. Photographer Simon Griffiths has an eye for the beauty of ordinary things; in Shack he showed us the eccentric living spaces and holiday homes that Australians have made out of simple dwellings. Now he takes you to peek inside some of Australia's most intriguing sheds. From fabulously cluttered artists' studios overflowing with creativity and inspiration to evocative abandoned ruins, these sheds will make you look at your own in a new light. A shed is a place of possibility; it can be anything you want it to be.

I love it, though. It's done on nice paper, matt color, and beautifully bound so that the pages stay open easily. My husband wants to build a shop/studio/shed next to our house, and he is going to love the ideas displayed in this book.

Elliott O’Donnell (1872-1965) is hardly known in this country, but in England he was for many years its most celebrated ghost-hunter. By turns melodramatic, slapstick, sentimental, racist, misogynist, embarrassing and horrific, “The Sorcery Club” is hardly a great novel of the supernatural. It lacks the artistic seriousness, power and conviction, as well as the stylistic excellence, of such masterpieces as Sheridan Le Fanu’s “Carmilla” or John Meade Falkner’s “The Lost Stradivarius.” Perhaps its greatest strength lies in the tawdry realism of the rituals and magical protocols O’Donnell describes (complete with footnotes). These, one feels, are just the formulas and ingredients that fin de siècle occultists would employ in their satanic negotiations. As a plus, the 2014 Ramble House edition of “The Sorcery Club” reproduces the eerie black-and-white illustrations of the 1912 original (now a $1,000 book). The artist Phillys Vere Campbell was the sister of Marjorie Bowen, one of the most admired practitioners of supernatural fiction (her novel, “Black Magic” was number 13 in Wheatley’s occult library, although she is best known for such short stories as “The Crown Derby Plate” and “The Avenging of Ann Leete”). Further enhancing this new Ramble House reprint are an introduction by eminent horror scholar John Pelan and a brief afterword by the book’s cover designer, Gavin O’Keefe. Still, be warned: “The Sorcery Club” may seem an example of dated turn-of-the-century diabolism, but I wouldn’t try any of its weird invocations at home.

The Sorcery Club, by Elliott O'Donnell

About the Author Elliott O'Donnell (February 27, 1872 - May 8, 1965) was an Irish author known primarily for his books about ghosts. He claimed to have seen a ghost, described as an elemental figure covered with spots, when he was five years old. He also claimed to have been strangled by a mysterious phantom in Dublin. He claimed descent from Irish chieftains of ancient times, including Niall of the Nine Hostages (the King Arthur of Irish folklore) and Red Hugh, who fought the English in the sixteenth century. O'Donnell was educated at Clifton College in Bristol, England, and later at Queen's Service Academy, Dublin, Ireland. In later life he became a ghost hunter. His first book, written in his spare time, was a psychic thriller titled "For Satan's Sake" (1904). From this point onward, he became a writer. He wrote several popular novels, including an occult fantasy, "The Sorcery Club" (1912) but specialised in what were claimed as true stories of ghosts and hauntings. O'Donnell wrote material for numerous magazines, including "Hutchinson Story Magazine, The Novel Magazine, The Idler, Weekly Tale-Teller, Hutchinson's Mystery-Story Magazine, Pearson's Magazine, Lilliput" and "Weird Tales". As he became known as an authority on the supernatural, he was called upon as a ghost hunter. He also lectured and broadcast (radio and television) on the paranormal in Britain and the United States. In addition to his more than 50 books, he wrote scores of articles and stories for national newspapers and magazines.

The three men who made up the company were just real *shuders*....so I could care less about what actually happened to them, but it would've been nice to learn the fate of Gladis and the poor artist who was smitten with her. I dont know if this was the way the book just ended or if there is some error in the text but it sure left me hanging! Beware of some serious racial slurs throughout the book, but all in all it was a good read. I Love Lovecraft though and belive he could've done a better job. I wonder who influenced who?

Turn of the last Century Occult Thriller By Gulliver If you can get past the casual racism, anti-Semitism, turn of the last century British snobbery, shallow character development, and over simple storytelling this turns out to be an amusing quick read about three cads who obtain mysterious occult powers from a sinister force from Atlantis.

I've wanted to re-read it for years. Finding it in an Amazon Kindle edition at no cost was wonderful. The book is easy to navigate, the type is clear and easy to read, and it makes for a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The book is a story about 19th-Century pioneers in the Lac St. Jean country north of the Laurentides Park in Quebec.I recommend it.
