Tom Curren set a goal to move up and away from his working class roots and into the white collar world whose lifestyle he had for so long admired. Struggling against the odds he found a crack and worked his way in, the charmed life that he had sought seeming to be finally laid bare before him. Opening this door shut another though, the good friends and reliable relationships of his past inadvertently pushed aside. When his new life is shaken up and his path and goals made more murky, which way will he turn? What option would bring him the satisfaction and true sense of self that he has been craving? Is what he gave up better than what he had been taught to idealize? Is going backward giving up?

All Of My Heroes Are Ghosts, by Robert A Wern

About the Author Robert A. Wern is a lifelong Connecticut resident who currently lives in Fairfield with his family. Permitted at ten year's old to sit astride his Uncle Bob's pristine Triumph T-140 while visiting his family in England, Robert began a love affair with British motorcycles. Finally able to purchase his own Triumph years later, a "bitsa" 1965 T100 Roadster, his personal collection has grown as finances and luck have allowed. His current collection includes this Triumph, a 1942 BSA WM20, and of course a pearl white 1971 Norton Commando. A proud shade tree mechanic, he has yet to purchase a running machine. Through hours spent wrenching on his classic machines and trips to car shows throughout the northeast he hopes to indoctrinate his young son into the culture of grease and oil. Robert is a 1996 graduate of Wilton High School in Wilton Connecticut and graduated with honors from SUNY Purchase College in 2003.

I can't help but wonder what is next for Tom? Will he marry Caroline and buy Sean's greenhouse? I hope so!The characters and places in this book are described in such detail that you can see them in your mind as you move through the chapters. It is interesting to follow Tom's journey as he settles into a career, hobby and relationship that truly make him happy. I believe that search for happiness is something that would resonate with any reader, as it's a journey that many of us travel!

Will he cross that bridge or stay with his friends, good, hard working men. Robert's descriptions of the mechanics of vintage cars and motorcycles will delight any man who has the same hobby. A very well written, interesting tale of a young man working his way up.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Growing up a boy By Ted Some things never change, like being a new kid in school and facing tough situations and falling in love. Although written 100 years ago Stephen Crane captures what it is to be a boy growing up in a small town. Much like Ray Bradbury in Dandelion Wine he brings back those warm and sometimes terrible episodes of boyhood. Aside from a few dated ethnic references his descriptions of life as viewed by a 12 year old holds true today. This was Crane's last work written serially to bring in money as he was dying. Amazing that he could recall so vividly his own boyhood experiences as he was Jimmy.

Comfortable Insight into Early 20th Small Town Family Life By EdH1954 In the tradition of Mark Twain and Jean Shepherd, an interesting inside view of life in the first years of the 20th century. Slow paced and simple as life in that time is portrayed today.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Peter The Great By Jacqueline L. Hines I gave this book only three stars mainly because of the author's writing style. It is always telling and not showing. The book did not hold my interest. I also noticed within the first few pages that there were several incidents that do not match research I have done on Peter the Great. The writer refers to the palace guards as the "Strelitz." I have read numerous research books in which these guards are referred to as the "Streltsy". I thought the story was tiring to read and not always entirely accurate. The writer did a nice job putting this long work together. He did include many facts and he obviously did spend time researching but in my opinion, did not get his facts quite straight.

Gillis Gilford is in love—again; but, this time the object of his affection is a flesh-and-blood creature, a new waitress at his daddy’s diner where he works as cook and manager. However, she does bear a striking resemblance to a young beauty from a magazine that he saw, and that resemblance soon leads to a road-trip from Mesopotamia, Kentucky, to Nashville, Tennessee. Gillis and the new waitress, Jeanette, are accompanied by Gillis’s best friend, Waugh, and Ruth Ann Belcher, another waitress from the diner. Along the way the group stops at a drive-in movie double-feature, does not hit a possum, attends a wedding, attends a funeral, and eats at a variety of diners. Meanwhile, Charles Bland, science-fiction and fantasy writer from Cincinnati, is searching for the same young woman from the same magazine that inspired Gillis’s infatuation; Bland’s mission is to make her his bride, which does not set well with Purity Bliss, the erstwhile object of his desires and fictional heroine of his novels. Also traveling the highways and byways of Kentucky is Tristan Shoat, folklore graduate student, who is researching names for his dissertation: The Sociological and Psycho-Linguistic Effects of the Name on the Common Man. The novel follows the disparate groups as they travel toward the final scene in Nashville, a showdown fraught with heroic derring-do, near-spiritual revelations, and a soupcon of denouement for those who need that sort of thing.

Gloriously meta, My Brooklyn Writer Friend ventures inside the many minds of the writer. Laying bare the struggle with beginnings, the trouble with endings, and every hard-earned narrative step in between, Greg Gerke appreciates that whether writing into truth or lie, what matters is character. Neurotic and funny, earnest and obscure, the voices that echo in these short short stories resound with a clarion honesty that remains-and provokes and teases and endears-long after the final page is turned.

From the Inside Flap "Greg Gerke is a short form wizard; dark, funny and seriously sly. His book will deliver you to new strange thought and feeling."-Sam Lipsyte, author of The Ask"These swift, swervy, nervous fictions-as often as not about writers in antic crisis with the language, lovers in trouble with their loves-are heartachingly hilarious and stocked from margin to margin with agony-born brilliances fresh and revitalizing. Greg Gerke's endearingly self-questioning narrators worry their doubts into a make-do grace that leaves a reader sweetened too."- Gary Lutz, author of Stories in the Worst Way"In this remarkable series of ruefully funny and insightful bursts, Greg Gerke manages to reorder the mundanity of alienation into something urgent and vital."-Sergio De La Pava, author of A Naked Singularity"A Duchampian travelogue about the nature of how we read and construct the stories, MY BROOKLYN WRITER FRIEND, is as compelling as entertaining. The six interlocking sections present comedic aspects of the American landscape we take for granted, and at the same time challenge our received ideas about the places we visit. As quickly as the writers in the book build the scaffolding of their ideas, others endeavor to shift the architecture. The result is a series of brilliant roller coaster rides that demand to be revisited many times over. "- Susan Daitch, author of Paper Conspiracies"Greg Gerke writes like an anthropologist of love, or like a Brooklyn-based Sigmund Freud, walking down a mobius boulevard, finding the truth asit flowers in the cracks of the sidewalk. Honest, deadpan, personal and smart, these stories conspire, like a dream, to create a world both uncanny and familiar, delirious and quotidian, funny and sad and completely mesmerizing."- John Haskell, author of I am Not Jackson Pollock and American Purgatorio"If you put Lydia Davis, Etgar Keret and Philip Roth's Portnoy in a blender you might  get Greg Gerke's quirkily neurotic, hilariously honest voice in "MyBrooklyn Writer Friend." All the writing about writing probably won't play in Peoria, but  luckily he lives in Brooklyn, believes in truth in advertising  and his very short stories are weird and wildly engaging. " - Susan Shapiro, author of Lighting Up and What's Never Said "How is it that Greg Gerke's short fiction collection makes dislocation, miscommunication, and the anxious knots of the mind seem absolutely worthwhile and even kind of fun? Friends, sort-of-friends, lovers and sort-of-lovers tangle with the loneliness of being apart/together. Get prepared for a writer who wonderfully navigates bumbling, ordinary life with smart, sharp writing and a big dose of compassion."- Victoria Redel, author of Make Me Do Things

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. you might come to see its really someone pushing a lawn mower with what looks like 4 legs instead of wheels By Thomas J Kelly To understand Mr. Gerkes' stories, one probably should accept the notion that when you might see someone walking a dog at night, you might come to see its really someone pushing a lawn mower with what looks like 4 legs instead of wheels. And then the question comes up, being pulled or pushing? And is it really a lawn mower? Or is it a dog? These stories will make you wonder. And for anyone interested in getting away from linear thinking, these stories will help you do just that. Keeping in mind the dadaist illustration of the love affair between the ironing board and the coat hanger, Greg seems to be at the beginning of something that could end up as a dog cutting the grass in the dark or someone cutting the grass as a dog. I think anyone outside of mainstream thinking should pick these stories up and give 'em a look

Review "Historians should read Dumas, the best ones probably do; it would not be difficult to guess at the probability that their books had been nurtured from fantastic, imaginative, agile novels, but novels not without foundation, which Alexandre Dumas wrote for so many years."  —Julián Marías

About the Author Alexandre Dumas was a French writer, best known for his historical novels of high adventure which have made him one of the most widely read French authors in the world. Many of his novels, including The Count of Monte Cristo, The Three Musketeers, Twenty Years After, and The Vicomte de Bragelonne were originally serialized. He also wrote plays and magazine articles and was a prolific correspondent. Javier Albiñana is a translator.

20 of 20 people found the following review helpful. My favorite George MacDonald book so far! By Sue Avalos Flight of the Shadow is an exciting story wrought with mystery, intrigue, and evil. Unlike many of George MacDonald's other novels, you will find none of the author's preaching and musing. The story is seen through the eyes of Mrs. Day as she records the episodes from her life in a journal. The book is shorter than many of MacDonald's other books, but unveils many valuable truths in the telling of the story. What is the insideous secret behind the behavior of John's mother? And why does Belorba's uncle appear on the moor at night during the storm when he is believed to be at home? What is the terrible secret he is ashamed to admit that torments him throughout his life? As with all of MacDonald's works, this book is chock full of spiritual nourishment. I was especially touched by Belorba's deep love for her uncle and his love for her. Reading about John's mother, her own spoiling upbringing and her desire to control every aspect of her son's life, was so poignant as to make me feel not a little unsettled in some of my own parenting practices. The Flight of the Shadow is a beautiful book which I will enjoy reading again. It is an easy read with no dialect and no veering from the story as occurs in other MacDonald books.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Historical Mystery Weaved Full of God's Love By Janet Reeves Though the book is sometimes hard to follow due to its historical setting and language style, it is definitely worth the effort. As Belorba and her fiance' struggle to solve the mysteries of their ancestors' pasts in order to clear the way for a happy marriage, they cling to God's faithfulness and discover His loving, yet sovereign plan. Belorba's unique narrative style makes the reader feel like a present listener. The surprise ending neatly, and delightfully, ties up all loose ends.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A MUST READ! By Amazon Customer George MacDonald has been a favorite of mine for years. This book reads like a mystery. Even reading it the second time, I couldn't put it down. And like all of his books you need not be concerned with any inappropriate material.

By Amazon Customer Couldn't return this book from my Kindle collection as that option was not available so I deleted it instead... The smuttiness starts on page 1 in the about the 6th paragraph... I don't know how long it lasts as I closed the book after reading partway through page 3, by then I knew there was no hope that the tone of the book would change... This is supposed to be a sensual tale & I have read some beautifully sensual Elizabeth & Darcy stories BUT this is not one of them... I have read close to 300 JAFF novels...All-in-all waste of my time & money, don't waste yours... Use the 'Look Inside' option if you are thinking of buying this book... Read Ebook Tales from Sleeping Moose, Volume 4: Alaska- Forget-me-not, by Atwood Cutting

Volume 4 completes the Sleeping Moose series. With the frontier setting of a Jack London novel and a James Herriot-like humorous candor, this four-volume saga gives readers a first-hand view of the transportation issues, weather issues, isolation issues, and social issues encountered when one lives at the end of a long dirt road in the middle of nowhere. Taking place just a decade before cellphones, four-wheeler ATVs and home computers were introduced, this nearly-modern day pioneering epic is a good read for idealists, realists, and those interested in the story of two 19th Century Romantics who were born one hundred years too late and ten years too early. Their partnership, forged and tempered by countless difficulties encountered and surmounted, is both an adventure story and a love story.

In this, the fourth volume of her series about her mother's experiences with homesteading in remote Alaska, she has saved the best (and the worst) for last. Troubles plagued her mother and father to the point where they feared for their lives if they stayed in the gorgeous pastoral homestead that they literally carved out of the wilderness. The people who move to the end of the road are people who want to live outside of convention. With only one lawman in over a thousand square miles, people at the "end of the road" tend to follow their own consciences, and some don't have much if any. This book illuminates the pioneer spirit which built America but often killed people on the process. Eminently readable, it rightly deserves a five star rating.

By Peppermint I will not spoil a novel, however, I will say that the characters in this book are so genuine, consistent and empathetic towards one another and the style so impromptu, this could easily be declared one of my new favorite books. The rustic truth of the story is greatly refreshing! My only dislike was the lack of necessary commas and semicolons in this particular edition.

Patrin Szkandery, a young woman living in Victoria BC in the 1970s, restores an ancient quilt and travels to Czechoslovakia to trace her Roma history over the unsettling terrain of central Europe in the years of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The pieced cloth proves to be both coded map and palimpsest of her extended familys nomadic wandering through Moravia in the first decade of the 20th century. The elegant and beautifully attentive lyric prose of Kishkans earlier work in fiction and memoir is augmented here with masterful pace and plotting. Patrin is a little jewel of a novella, an exquisitely nuanced and moving glimpse into the grand themes of exile and homecoming across continents and generations. Stitched seamlessly it is a suspenseful and historic tale.

In the aftermath of reading Theresa Kishkan’s Patrin, I woke in the night thinking of her protagonist and asking myself these questions. It’s a good book that leaves the reader thinking, especially about “who I am.”Patrin promises a journey in the opening pages. The trajectory is set—a trip to ancestral lands. As a reader I’m on board. I know where it’s going, geographically at least. I leapt to the end of the book, as I often do, for clues about what the author is trying to say. And there it was: “It was strange how love came into my life.” Which could have been the story’s opening line. Instead, Kishkan opens by describing an old quilt. The protagonist, Patrin, receives a package containing a quilt that belonged to her grandmother. At the end of the first chapter, she “shakes it out,” meaning that it will live again. The quilt is a character in its own right. As Patrin repairs it, she suspects it contains clues that will help her on the journey she will take to uncover her ancestral past. A journey to encounter the love that will enter her life. I loved it. All 130 pages. I love this book all the more for distilling a novel’s worth of material into the taut and tailored and crisp and smart and poetic novella it is. It’s a true joy to read, though not a quick read; this is a book to savour. And I applaud Kishkan for daring to experiment with an amorphous middle. Only a strong structure will allow a story to jump back and forth as Kishkan does through its ten-year time span.Patrin’s theme is a proven one—we have to travel far from home in order to find our true home. At least that’s the theme I identified early on. It always works for me. I can count on these “road stories” to wake me up in the middle of the night replaying the endings. I find I’m less concerned about whether the protagonist lives or dies—than if she is set free.
