A Tale of Two Cities is one of the most thrilling narratives in the whole range of the literature of fiction. Considered apart from all the other works of Dickens, it would entitle him to a very high rank among romancers. The total effect of the novel, both in construction and content, is remarkably strong. A careful re-reading will convince one that no event is superfluous, that every scene pictured, every character introduced, every mysterious, whispered conference, leads straight to the final catastrophe. It is in fact a notable proof of Dickens’s skill in writing a novel of incident, — the way in which he draws so many events of the Revolution into the main current of his story, leaving no circumstance to eddy by itself. These merits and the many vivid and, in the main, true pictures of the Revolution give one good reason for calling The Tale of Two Cities a great novel. From it, a host of readers will continue to receive their first and most lasting impression of a great historical event, and at the same time will be exalted in mood by the heroic self-sacrifice of Sidney Carton.

By Don Kidwell Thought I'd browse Amazon (once again) and see what illustrated classics could be had for a song and pass it on. Best of three illustrated versions I own including "A Tale of Two Cities (Illustrated) (Top Five Classics Book 7) " and "A Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations (Illustrated)." Book is well-formatted with an active table of contents and fine illustrations making it an easy one to recommend.

Describes a period of European History, specially England and France, with intelligent sense of humour and deep understanding. The plot is secondary, but even interesting. There is a chapter: "Monseigneur on town", that is a maasterpiece in itself. It's a book to be read many times, and always shows new aspects. May be tha's is the definition of a classic.

From the Back Cover Dorothy L. Sayers, long considered one of the top mystery authors of our day, has excelled herself in this delightfully macabre tale which centers around the disappearance of a wealthy financier and the discovery of a nude corpse, wearing a golden pince-nez, in a bathtub. Sayer's most renowned amateur detective, the engaging and amusing Lord Peter Wimsey, sets out to unravel this puzzling case under the jealous eye of Scotland Yard. Needless to say he succeeds in solving things to everyone's ultimate satisfaction, but only after a series of bloodcurdling and hair-raising episodes that will hold you spellbound with anticipation.

Here is a truly rare find for anyone who is interested in top-flight crime fiction. The New York Times said of this book "the tale is better written, and has a good deal more characterization than one finds in the average detective story".

About the Author Dorothy L. Sayers was an English writer, translator, and Christian humanist. Best known for the extremely popular Lord Peter Wimsey mystery series, Sayers also penned a number of plays, including The Man Born to Be King, essays, and translations, of which she considered Dante s Divine Comedy to be her best. Sayers died in 1950, and is buried in St. Anne s Church in London.

122 of 125 people found the following review helpful. Dorothy Sayers' apprentice-work By Pauline J. Alama If "Whose Body?" is the only Lord Peter Wimsey novel you've read, don't judge the rest by it. And if, like me, you read the later ones first, you may be amused to see how different this one is. I wonder whether Dorothy L. Sayers was still unsure, when she wrote this, whether she wanted to write a detective story or a parody of a detective story. There are wonderful comic touches, oddly mixed with some fairly gruesome scenes. The characters are broadly satirical, like the caricatured upper-class twits in P.G. Wodehouse. Lord Peter is frivolous and eccentric, a sort of smarter cousin to Wodehouse's amiable fop Bertie Wooster; the Dowager Duchess, his mother, is endearingly ditsy, like Aunt Dahlia of Wodehouse fame. As a mystery, the story fails -- I knew who the murderer was at once, not because of any clues but because there wasn't any other reason to introduce that character. However, it's interesting to examine the early, rough work that preceded Dorothy L. Sayers later, more polished mysteries. In this book, she was just beginning to learn her craft. Aspiring writers can probably learn a lot by comparing this with the much more successful "Clouds of Witness," written 4 years later.

63 of 65 people found the following review helpful. Best to meet Peter Wimsey elsewhere before you read this one By Kytaline This was the first of Dorothy L. Sayers' detective novels, but 70-odd years after publication it's not the best introduction to Sayers or to her most successful hero, Lord Peter Wimsey. If that's what you're looking for, try Nine Tailors, Murder Must Advertise, or one of the books that include Harriet Vane (my personal favourite is Gaudy Night)."Whose Body" is something of an apprentice work. Lord Peter is here more a bundle of characteristics than a character: a collector of rare books and incunabula, facile with quotations, fluent in French and probably in Latin, a skillful and sensitive pianist who never needs to practise, slightly built but possessed of "curious" strength and speed which he maintains without exercise. Over subsequent books, this caricature smooths and deepens into one of the most interesting and attractive detectives in fiction. In spite of its awkwardness, Whose Body is worth reading. The plot is clever, the villain is believable and sadistic, and most of the supporting characters are a delight. Some of these characters are further developed in later novels: Bunter, Parker, the Dowager Duchess, Freddy Arbuthnot. Others fortunately are not. Sayers is much better with people she might recognise as "like us" then with people from other social groups.Sayers developed into a powerful writer of fiction whose technique was imperceptible. Here she has less mastery of technique, so that the scenes that work have disproportionate impact. The encounter between the Dowager Duchess of Denver and the American millionaire Milligan is a tiny classic. In summary, interesting and entertaining for existing fans, but a hurdle for newcomers to the world of Wimsey.

New Masters of Woodturning: Expanding the Boundaries of Wood Art, by Kevin Wallace, Terry Martin

Review In 1985, Dale Nish published 'Master Woodturners' to celebrate the innovative leaders of the field. Authors Martin and Wallace have jumped ahead a generation to showcase new artists, new technologies and new works of art. From Australia, Canada, England, France, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa and the United States, thirty-one wood artists show their finest efforts and talk freely about influences, design ideas, lifestyles and where they are headed in the future. Much of this new work is highly sculptural, but as Ron Layport puts it, "The turned form must be valid before I proceed with sculpting." In the Introduction, the authors say, "Much of the wood art in this book inverts the truism that turned work is round. The lathe is merely the beginning, with additional off-lathe processing to come." The technical challenge in producing these works is amazing. Several turners show a series of photos on how they work: hollowing on three axes using wedges and straps to mount an irregular burl, or steaming and bending turned work over a curved form. This is an amazing collection that will inspire many a wood turner and is a "must have" for any woodworkers' library. The depth, texture, and sensuality of wood in the hands of artists transforms our static notions of wood in this book. As you would desire to hold, to stroke, to peer into and through each piece in this volume, you will also return many times to this book to discover new meanings for "resonance" and "movement". If this book was a food, it could be toasted artisan bread with ivy honey and melting butter.BOOK REVIEW: NEW MASTERS OF WOODTURNING Expanding the Boundaries of Woodturning Joseph M. Herrmann 1882 St. Rt. 45, No. Rock Creek, Ohio 44084 440-563-5785 latheturner@alltel.net INTRODUCTION: Dale Nish wrote Master Woodturners and when it was published in 1986, it was one of the first times that anyone attempted to document the procedures used by the finest turners in the United States and England at the time. Dale used black and white photographs to illustrate, step by step, the techniques used to produce their signature pieces and it was probably the closest that most amateur turners would ever get to this august group. Symposiums as we know them today were just getting started and the American Association of Woodturners had not yet been officially formed when Dale wrote the book. Featured were nine turners (they were yet to be called artists) and included David Ellsworth, Ray Key, Mark Lindquist, Melvin Lindquest, Ed Moulthrop, Rude Olsolnik, Richard Raffan, Al Stirt, and Jack Straka. That was then, but this is now. Turning is currently undergoing a transition from purely functional items made with the lathe as the principal tool and the grain of the wood as the primary focus. Today, the lathe might be the first machine employed by the artist but the work now undergoes significant manipulation using many other tools. For example, the wood is textured, burned, carved, re-cut and painted and the final result might bear little resemblance to the original form that came off the lathe. The field is fraught with many innovative techniques and procedures that are fast becoming the norm and the artists featured in New Master Woodturner's are on the cutting edge of the movement. AUTHOR CREDENTIALS: The authors, Terry Martin and Kevin Wallace, have impeccable credentials and both are seriously involved the wood art field. For example, Terry Scott has been a professional wood artist for over twenty years and has written over 200 articles that have been published in twelve journals in seven different countries. Kevin Wallace has curated exhibits for many prestigious galleries and museums and has written seven previous books, one being "River of Destiny: The Life and Work of Binh Pho". ARTISTS INCLUDED: The full color, 216 page, hardcover book features thirty-one respected artists who are pushing the boundaries and are defining the evolution of woodturning from functionality to art. A brief historical background is provided for each of the different artists that provides an insight into their inspirations and philosophies, discusses where they were trained and who were their influences, describes where and how they work, and includes several gallery photographs of current and past works. There are some familiar and not so familiar names from around the world and include fourteen Americans, two Australians, three Canadians, two New Zealanders, one South African, four Frenchmen, two Germans and two Brits. Featured are: Marilyn Campbell, Virginia Dotson, Harvey Fein, J. Paul Fennell, Ron Fleming, Liam Flynn, Mark Gardner, Dewey Garret, Louise Hibbert, Michael Holsaluk, Peter Hromek, Steven Kennard, Ron Layport, Mike Lee, Alain Milland, Thierry Martenon, Michael Mode, William Moore, Rolly Munro, Christophe Nancey, Binh Pho, Graeme Priddle, Vaugh Richmond, Marc Ricout, Betty Scarpino, Neil Scobie, David Sengel, Hayley Smith, Butch Smuts, Jacques Vesery, and Hans Weissflog. FINAL THOUGHTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: New Master Woodturners introduces the reader to current trends and modern innovations as well as providing a historical perspective on the woodturning movement that strives to introduce contemporary woodturning to a wider audience. It isn't often that I sit down and read a new book from cover to cover in one evening. However, this is what happened when I picked up New Master Woodturners. Perhaps I am a dinosaur in the contemporary woodturning field in that I am still drawn to and prefer unadorned and un-manipulated forms and turnings where functionality is still important. However, I recognize that things are changing and I can respect that. New Masters of Woodturning is recommended to every turner who even has a passing interest in new trends and for those who are looking for new inspirations. Just the photographs of current works and those depicting the artist at work alone justify purchase. Terry Martin and Kevin Wallace. New Master Woodturning. Fox Chapel Publishing, 2008. 216 pages, hard and soft cover $29.95, ISBN #: 978-1-56523-334-8 (paper); 978-1-56523-375-1 (hardcover)31 contemporary woodturning artists from around the globe are featured in New Masters of Woodturning. The book highlights their works and offers a look at some of their techniques. I think it is cool the way the book introduces the reader to the artists by showing some of them in their shops or homes and by learning about their inspirations, philosophies and approaches to woodturning and sculpture. The book provides a gallery of photographs showing really neat vessels, bowls, platters and more.Himself a wood artist, Martin is also a curator and commentator on the art, while Wallace is a curator and writer with a broader portfolio of contemporary art in craft media. They profile 31 contemporary artists and their work from Europe, North America, Oceania, and South Africa. The color photographs are of the high technical and aesthetic quality appropriate for an art book. There is no index. In this upcoming collection of furniture pieces that have redefined the limits of shaped wood, crafters and designers alike are treated to a wealth of knowledge from 31 leading wood artists who share their personal motivations, thought processes, and the studio techniques employed to bring out the breath-taking beauty of wood. Contemporary artists such as Virginia Dodson, Binh Pho, Harvey Fein, Paul Fennell, and Marilyn Campbell are among those whose works are given studio-quality photographic treatment. Each featured piece encourages crafters to find new ways of connecting with their own creative channels and makes this book an important document of the modern craft. -Judson Randall of Oregon, professional editor of Wood Turning Center publications, with more than 40 years of newspaper experience. Book available at www.woodturningcenter.org/shop/ or call 215.923.8000.New Masters of Woodturning is an awesome source of inspiration showing really great artwork around the world. Terry Martin and Kevin Wallace really have succeeded in selecting some masters of contemporary woodturning of this time. Excellent book which I think could be great for everyone interested in contemporary woodturning as well as artists in different mediums.Terry Martin and Kevin Wallace tell the stories of 31 international artists in New Masters of Woodturning: Expanding the Boundaries of Wood Art (Fox Chapel Publishing, $29.95). Individual profiles explore the technical and creative aspects of the artists' mostly sculptural work, along with their experiences, styles and studio techniques. The introduction gives a historical overview of the wood turning movement, making it a must-have resource."New Masters of Woodturning - Expanding the boundaries of art" A review By Judson Randall In the introduction to their new book "New Masters of Woodturning," an extraordinary compendium of sketches of wood-turning artists, authors Terry Martin and Kevin Wallace say they are inspired by and appreciative of the "willingness of everyone to share their ideas, techniques and joy in what they do." Now we, the viewers, writers, collectors, curators, students and makers involved in the lathe-turned art field should feel appreciation and inspiration because of how Martin and Wallace have provided contemporary detail and insight into these 31 international artists and their work. Martin, of Brisbane, Australia, is a turner and sculptor whose work has been in scores of exhibitions and in dozens of collections, public and private. He is a curator, lecturer and writer involved in the field over many years. His 1995 book, "Wood Dreaming," is the only documentation of Australian woodturners. Until 2006, he was a writer for and editor of "Turning Points," the Wood Turning Center's unique journal of the lathe-turned art field. Wallace of Los Angeles is a board of directors member of Collectors of Wood Art and an advisory board member for the Handweavers Guild of America. A curator of many California exhibitions and a writer on the contemporary art field, Wallace is the author of seven previous books, including biographical expositions of artists and examinations of trends in contemporary craft art. He was associated with del Mano Gallery in Pasadena for many years. Their book picks up where previous chroniclers of artistic woodturning - Dona Z. Meilach in 1976, Dale Nish in 1985 and the growing coverage of the field by "Fine Woodworking" -- left off. Today, there are several publications that cover the lathe-turned art field, including the American magazine "Woodwork", the "American Woodturner", and the Wood Turning Center's "Turning Points" as well as its exhibition books documenting its breakthrough "challenges" and other exhibitions. However, "New Masters" is a singular catalog of the lives, educations, artistic approaches and techniques of a broad international selection of the artists who will do for the 21st century what the old masters did for the 20th. Martin and Wallace pay tribute to the founders of the modern lathe-turning field, including David Ellsworth, Stephen Hogbin, Bob Stocksdale, James Prestini, Mark Lindquist, Ed Moulthrop, Rude Osolnick, Al Stirt, Ray Key and Richard Raffan. As a testament to their energy and scope, the authors cast a broad net, bringing in the artists from nine countries on the continents of North America, Europe, Africa and Australia. Each of these artists' works is not just representative of his or her country but examples of the cultural influences of the continent or region in which they make art. For example, Virginia Dotson, whose laminated and layered works reflect her Arizona domain. "I am intrigued by the features of the landscape and what they reveal about the past," she said. "New Masters" is lavishly illustrated with photographs of the artists, their surroundings, their shops, and selected studio photographs of their works, as well as explanatory photographs of many of their techniques. The photographs are either supplied by the artists or shot by a variety of other photographers. Among the expository technical photographic layouts is the illustrative sequence on how Peter Hromek, a Czech who moved to Germany, created the multiple-axis "Paradise," a sensual three-lobed work, in 2007. We readers are treated to Martin's and Wallace's explorations of many aspects of the artists included in this catalog of the "New Masters." We learn, for example, what inspires the makers and how they came to engage in their artistic pursuits: To take one, we learn that William Moore, an Oregon artist who combines spun metal with his wood forms and sculptures, is one of few art-school- educated turners. A sculptor by education, he was inspired by Henry Moore and design movements such as Art Nouveau, Arts and Crafts and Bauhaus. And Michael Hosaluk of Saskatchewan, Canada, describes his beginnings as: "I was born among people who use their hands." His inspirations, we learn, include the "art of unknown artists from ancient cultures whose work lives on in museums." A second exploration that Martin and Wallace bring to us is the artists' current approaches to their works, what informs their expressive intent and their way of carrying it out. For example, Ron Layport of Pittsburgh, who, like Hosaluk, is inspired by "works made a thousand years ago that speak of personal struggle, daily life, mystery and ceremony," tells the authors that he approaches his highly sculptural works "like a canvas. Even though I know what I am hoping to achieve, I try to be receptive to opportunities and changes of direction as they present themselves." And yet, we are told about Hayley Smith's approach to her intricately textured and surface-sculpted works: The Arizona artist who spent most of her life in Wales, told Martin and Wallace - referring to wood -- that "I like the challenge of finding the balance between its existing character and what I can add to it. It is, after all, not a blank canvas." The third exploration that Martin and Wallace share with us readers is the artists' techniques for achieving their completed work. Many viewers of lathe-turned art, which can often hide its lathe-turned origins, look at a sculpture and say to themselves, "How did she do that?" Practitioners and hangers-on in the lathe-turned art world always want to discern the processes that lead to the expression, even though the artists might want the final product to be the only voice speaking. The significant achievement of "New Masters of Woodturning" is that, in many cases, it exposes the tricks and techniques that produced the final, resolved work. Besides the sidebar layout of Peter Hromek's creation of "Paradise," the book gives us, for example, an explanation of how Louise Hibbert, a British artist who now lives in Virginia, achieves her expression of natural beauty in a piece that comes to be the balance and form of an apparent seed pod. On the whole, "New Masters of Woodturning - Expanding the Boundaries of Wood Art" is a valuable reference and a delight to read. The writing is straight-forward and clear and it brings to life the artists who are blazing new trails for wood turners of all levels of ability. The book also includes a glossary, a list of wood turning organizations, and a list of further readings. Judson Randall of Oregon is a professional editor and writer with more than 40 years experience on newspapers and is editor of Wood Turning Center publications. This just published book is a treasure that we believe you will want to own. The authors have selected 31 leading woodturning artists and bring you into their studios where they share techniques and the creative processes behind their deisgns. Artists such as Virginia Dodson, Binh Pho, Harvey Fein, Paul Fennell, and Marilyn Campbell are among those whose works are given studio-quality photographic treatment. It is a large format book (8 1/2' x 11") with a wealth of stunning full color inmages. The depth, texture, and sensuality of wood in the hands of artists transforms our static notions of wood in this book. As you would desire to hold, to stroke, to peer into and through each piece in this volume, you will also return many times to this book to discover new meanings for "resonance" and "movement." If this book was a food, it could be toasted artisan bread with ivy honey and melting butter.(translation) In NMWT two people who are profoundly knowledgable about the field lead us on a journey.... It makes you want to turn: it creates the desire and mood to set free your own creativity without the need to look back at the limits of conventional turning. There are many technical books available about turning today, but just as important is a feeling for form, structure and color. For those with less English, we can thank the rich photos...... The people behind the work are also described and through glimpses into their workshops and methods we learn more .... The authors show us that turning today can be much more than the form of a spinning piece of wood .... For me, the portraits of these wood artists and the glimpses into their lives make this wonderful publication the most beautiful book on turning in recent years. This book showcases 31 different artists who redefined the limits of shaped wood. Turning has very little to do with the pieces in the book. The focus is more on carving, painting and decorating. Do not buy this book if you are looking for items that may be produced from a lathe only.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Awesome inspiration By Karen W B I loved this book. I do not do any woodworking but I like to work with gourds. This book gave me so many new ideas for crafting and carving gourds. I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in arts and crafts. This book was so inpirational. And the price was fantastic.

Tanty While the choice of what artists to include in this book might be somewhat arbitrary, the authors have done an excellent job of presenting examples of the cutting edge of woodturning and sculpting. Excellent photos of the artist's work and frequent examples of how they work serve to make this book of great interest to turners and non-turners alike. An excellent coffee table book at a very attractive price.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Great Introduction to This Author! By Lori Dubelyoo How can so many great stories be in one sampler book? Ordinarily I would think it was stupid for a publisher to release a sampler book with some of the best stories by an author because it wouldn't leave any good stories in the books the samples were taken from but this author has so much good material that rule doesn't apply. This book is a Great introduction to this author. My favorites are: What My Faith Means to Me, Love is Colorblind, Spiritual DNA and Violence in our Society.

This is a good introduction work for people who don't know about this author. Good work!

About the Author Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) is the creator of Tarzan, one of the most popular fictional characters of all time, and John Carter, hero of the Barsoom science fiction series. Burroughs was a prolific author, writing almost 70 books before his death in 1950, and was one of the first authors to popularize a character across multiple media, as he did with Tarzan s appearance in comic strips, movies, and merchandise. Residing in Hawaii at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbour in 1941, Burroughs was drawn into the Second World War and became one of the oldest war correspondents at the time. Edgar Rice Burroughs s popularity continues to be memorialized through the community of Tarzana, California, which is named after the ranch he owned in the area, and through the Burrough crater on Mars, which was named in his honour.

Not everything is black and white as in the Saturday morning cowboys. The story is a never-ending series of last minute escapes until the very end when, well read the book and find out. Van Court Still naked, still thinking with his muscles, and still sword in hand.Returning to Mars in the second book of the Edgar Rice Burroughs' Mars series, John Carter finds that his beloved Dejah Thoris has made the journey to the valley of the gods of Mars, a journey without return. He ventures forth to rescue her, meeting old friends, new friends, new enemies, disrupting the religion of Mars, fighting to the death, and hanging from cliffs again. And all his efforts wind up in the supreme cliff-hanger of literary history.Like the first book of the Mars series, A Princess of Mars (Penguin Classics), there are feats of courage and recklessness, non-stop action, cliff hangers, and a complete absense of political correctness.Old school, first rate fun that leaves you ready for the next volume of this light weight adventure.E. How is this book unique?

Formatted for E-Readers, Unabridged & Original version. You will find it much more comfortable to read on your device/app. Easy on your eyes. Includes: 15 Colored Illustrations and Biography Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ is a novel by Lew Wallace, published by Harper & Brothers on November 12, 1880. Considered "the most influential Christian book of the nineteenth century", it became a best-selling American novel, surpassing Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852) in sales. The book also inspired other novels with biblical settings and was adapted for the stage and motion picture productions. Ben-Hur remained at the top of the bestseller lists until the publication of Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind (1936). Following the release of the 1959 MGM film adaptation of Ben-Hur, which was seen by tens of millions and won eleven Academy Awards in 1960, the book's sales increased and it surpassed Gone with the Wind. Blessed by Pope Leo XIII, the novel was the first work of fiction to be so honored. The success of the novel and its stage and film adaptations also helped it become a popular cultural icon that was used to promote numerous commercial products. The story recounts in descriptive detail the adventures of Judah Ben-Hur, a fictional Jewish prince from Jerusalem, who is enslaved by the Romans at the beginning of the 1st century and becomes a charioteer and a Christian. Running in parallel with Judah's narrative is the unfolding story of Jesus, who comes from the same region and is a similar age. The novel reflects themes of betrayal, conviction, and redemption, with a revenge plot that leads to a story of love and compassion.

Review "Compared with other romances . . . Ben-Hur easily passes them all, by a vitality which has a touch of genius." --Carl Van Doren

From the Inside Flap One of the most popular American novels of all time, General Lew Wallace's Ben-Hur vividly reimagines the mighty Roman Empire and the rise of Christianity. The saga of Judah Ben-Hur's spiritual journey from slavery to vengeance to redemption is both a vivid historical adventure and a powerful story of one man's religious awakening. As Blake Allmendinger writes in his Introduction to this Modern Library Paperback Classic, "Ben-Hur has endured for more than one hundred years because it offers something for everyone. The story of the Jewish hero Ben-Hur, his conflict with the Roman warrior Messala, and his conversion to Christianity at the foot of the Cross, combines adventure, sentimentality, athletic spectacle, and religious devotion."

From the Back Cover Ben-Hur is better known as a film than as a novel. Cinematic in scope and narrative, it was nevertheless as a book that it first met huge popular success on its publication in 1880. Intended as a moral and inspirational narrative, Judah Ben-Hur's life parallels that of Jesus as he makes a journey of discovery and enlightenment through the Mediterranean world from Jerusalem through Nazareth to the galleys that carry him to shipwreck in the Aegean and, finally, Rome. A spiritual tale of the quest for love and the recovery of identity and patrimony, the novel also displays a vivid realism based on Wallace's biblical research and knowledge of the Holy Land. Like other 'toga novels' of the period, Ben-Hur reflects the dissent, division, and moral contradiction of America's emerging imperial culture, the 'New Woman' question, the settlement of the Far West, and even trade unionism. Rich in social parallels, Ben-Hur is both a great historical epic and a window on late nineteenth-century literature.

138 of 140 people found the following review helpful. STILL THE GREATEST CHRISTIAN NOVEL OF ALL TIME By Waitsel Smith In 1880, a retired Union General by the name of Lew Wallace completed his first historical novel while serving as governor in the Territory of New Mexico. He wrote it in response to questions raised by a famous agnostic sharing a train ride from Chicago to Indianapolis. At the time, Wallace wasn't as knowledgeable of the facts surrounding the life of Christ as he had thought. After doing extensive research, he was inspired to write what has become the definitive religious epic. Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ helped Wallace sort out his own beliefs about God and Christ, and inspired others to do the same. Today, it stands as the most widely read novel of the 19th Century, and one of the most popular works of all time. It has never been out of print in its 130 year history, and has been made into several plays and four films.Ben-Hur reflects the life and journey of Lew Wallace. At the Battle of Shiloah, through an accident, he and his men arrived too late to help, making the Union losses significantly higher than they would have been. As a result, Wallace was disgraced. Judah Ben-Hur, through the accident of a loose roof tile, loses his home and property, his family is sent to prison, and he is sent to the galleys. Through a miracle of courage and circumstances, Wallace worked his way back, became a successful statesman and author, and is today remembered in the Hall of Statues in Washington, DC. Through a similar miracle, Ben-Hur works his way back to save his family and get revenge over those who caused their calamity. Ben-Hur is a story of courage and revenge, but it is also a story of redemption and salvation. I believe Wallace saw his life the same. Ben-Hur crosses paths with Christ more than once, so that, in the end, his hate and destructiveness are swallowed up in Christ's love and forgiveness. I believe Wallace saw the same miracle in his life.Ben-Hur did not take off immediately; but, after several years of word-of-mouth, everyone was reading it, especially pastors and their congregations. In 1900, two producers, Klaw and Erlanger, bought the rights to bring Ben-Hur to the New York stage. It was an amazing production that boasted five teams of horses and chariots on stage at once for the great chariot race. They used treadmills for the teams, with moving scenery. There was also a great sea battle that was considered spectacular. The success of the play inspired showmen in the fledgling industry of motion pictures to take note. The first film version of Ben-Hur was a 15-minute pirated version in 1907. This lead to a law suit by Wallace that set the precedent for future book-to-movie copyright cases. Eventually, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer bought the rights, and produced the first legitimate adaptation in 1925, directed by Fred Niblo and starring Ramon Novarro. In 1959, William Wyler directed a second MGM production of the book, this time starring Charlton Heston. It won 11 Oscars, including Best Picture and Director.I found the novel by Lew Wallace to be more charming and less "big" than the 1959 film. Even the characters were more life-size. I pictured a Robert Taylor in the role of Ben-Hur rather than Charlton Heston. The only actor from the film that seemed to fit the novel was Finlay Currie as Balthasar, the wise man from Egypt. He was perfect. The entire first of eight books, into which Ben-Hur is divided, is occupied by the three wise men, of which only Balthasar is carried through to the rest of the book, and plays a significant role. In addition to playing Balthasar, Currie also narrates the film. There is far more focus on Christ in the novel, the 1900 stage play (in which he is played by a beam of light) and the 1925 film than in the 1959 version. The book wrestles with the question of whether He will be an earthly King or a Savior of souls. Ben-Hur, who is a Sadducee, hopes he will be an earthly King, and actually trains three legions of Galileeans in preparation to help Him overthrow the occupying Romans. But Balthasar is convinced Christ will be a Savior of souls, and tries to convince Ben-Hur of the same. It is not until the miraculous events of the last of the eight books that he accepts that fact, and accepts Christ as his Savior. To date, Ben-Hur is still the greatest Christian novel ever written, as well as one of the all-time great classics. Men still struggle with the question of whether Christ is an earthly King or a Savior of souls. To find out, we must all take similar journeys to Ben-Hur and Balthasar, and be hindered along the way by various Messalas. Not many of us will be like Balthasar and "get" it so quickly. Most of us will be more like Ben-Hur: accept what life throws at us with defiance, deal with it as best we can, struggle, realize we can't do it on our own, accept God's salvation, transcend our troubles through faith, and be transformed into someone new, someone Christ-like. Ben-Hur isn't just about Lew Wallace's journey from failure to freedom; like Pilgrim's Progress, it reflects the common journey all Christians must take.Waitsel Smith

An Asian war that would have escalated into a nuclear nightmare has been halted, thanks to the raw courage, unparalleled skill, and total commitment of the Dreamland force. But an analysis of radar data has revealed the presence of an unknown super-weapon in the area: a robot warplane with terrifying capabilities, dubbed the “ghost clone.” Though strikingly similar to Dreamland’s own U/MF Flighthawk, no one knows where this fearsome instrument of destruction originated, but a rogue nation possessing a squadron of them could wreak unimaginable havoc on an unsuspecting free world. Now nothing less than a brazen, brilliantly conceived deception will lure the ghost clone out of hiding ― and only a daring strike on enemy soil can avert a tomorrow too terrible to consider . . . if it isn’t already too late. “Dale Brown is one of the best at marrying high-tech military wizardry with a compelling plot.” Houston Chronicle

Another great reader By R Entinger Although I have never been a fan of the double author book idea, Dale and Jim seem to have a good thing going here. Strike Zone continues the main characters as they continue to provide the President with options without an all out war. The story opens up slower than the other novels in this series, but as always, the action scenes are fantastic. As a first reader, this one would hold it's own, and if you have the others in the series, it's a MUST HAVE.

Strike Zone Revisited By Carl Warren Andreasen When I saw the paperback I checked my library which holds all of Dale Brown's work and I did not find it, so I bought it. As I read the book I soon relized I had read it before. I still read the book (again) and once more enjoyed it. If you like Dale Brown, Strike Zone is up to his normal standard. The theme is the tension between Taiwan and mainland China and the desire by some to start a war between China and the USA, which would leave China in a weakend or defeated state. China is not able to take Taiwan by force, especially with USA backing. Taiwan is not strong enough to take China in open warfare, but if the right people had the funding, and some nukes, and the right delivery system, and China were beat down by a war with the USA, that could kill a lot of people and upset the balance of power and bring down China. Of course, Dreamland gets the task of finding out what is going on, and then stopping it. It is no easy task for Dreamland and it is not without cost, but of course Dreamland saves the world again. My only disappointment is that I can't find my original copy of Strike Zone, which is most likely a hard cover book.

But in reality, this work was originally published in 2004 by Avon books, this is a reprint by Harper Publishing. It's a good story but if you read it in 2004 you don't need to buy it again.
