In Shawn MacKenzie's delightful, heart-warming story, Because the Pleasure-Dragon Whistles, we get to imagine a life shadowed by an imaginary creature. The dragon seems real, calling out to our memories and longings fast asleep since the time of childhood's magical realism. A wonderful story, I have this as the chapbook edition and am delighted to see it out in wider circulation on Kindle.

Ebook PDF Moby Dick: Or, The Whale, by Herman Melville

The classic tale of Captain Ahab's obsessive pursuit of the white whale, with Ishmael and crew in jeopardy in the heart of the sea. By turns alluring, vulgar, didactic, thrilling, and epic, Moby Dick has entertained and spurred controversy since its publication.

Moby Dick: Or, The Whale, by Herman Melville

From School Library Journal Grade 5 Up-Opening with the classic line, "Call me Ishmael," the narrator's New England accent adds a touch of authenticity to this sometimes melodramatic presentation. The St. Charles Players do a credible job on the major roles, but some of the group responses, such as "Aye, aye Captain," sound more comic than serious. This adaptation retains a good measure of Melville's dialogue and key passages which afford listeners a vivid connection with the lengthy novel. Background music and appropriate sound effects enhance the telling of the story about Captain Ahab's obsessive pursuit of the malevolent white whale. The cassettes are clearly marked, and running times are noted on each side of the tapes. Announcements at the beginning of each side and a subtle chime signal at the end make it easy to follow the story, but a stereo player must be used to hear some dialogue. The lightweight cardboard package is inadequate for circulation. Done in a radio theatre format, the recording does a nice job of introducing the deeper themes of the book and covering the major events. For school libraries that support an American literature curriculum, this recording offers a different interpretation of an enduring classic.Barbara Wysocki, Cora J. Belden Library. Rocky Hill, CT Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal In a sense, this work is the piece de resistance of the textual revolution in American scholarship of the past generation. The first half is the final MLA "Approved Text" of the classic novel, prepared under the auspices of the Center for Editions of American Authors. The second half consists of an Historical Note detailing background, genetic composition, publication, and ensuing critical reception; a discussion of its textual history; and some relevant marginalia. The work is not only thorough and rigorous, but, considering the scholarly grittiness of the endeavor, surprisingly lucid and graceful in its exposition. Highly recommended for special collections. Earl Rovit, City Coll., CUNYCopyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review "Responsive to the shaping forces of his age as only men of passionate imagination are, even Melville can hardly have been fully aware of how symbolical an American hero he had fashioned in Ahab."--F. O. Matthiessen" Responsive to the shaping forces of his age as only men of passionate imagination are, even Melville can hardly have been fully aware of how symbolical an American hero he had fashioned in Ahab." --F. 367 of 381 people found the following review helpful. your understanding might boil down to the quality of the gloss By Caraculiambro Unless you are a naval historian or a Melville scholar, you probably won't have a rewarding (or even comprehensible) time with Moby-Dick at this remove unless the edition you're using comes with a good set of footnotes. Here's the skinny on the various editions currently on shelves:THESE HAVE FOOTNOTES ON THE PAGE ITSELF:* Charles Feidelson, Jr.'s annotated edition. Unquestionably the most all-around useful edition of Moby-Dick ever printed. Generous and highly useful footnotes right on the page, covering lexical, allusional, and cross-referential items. Two disadvantages: you may at times feel put upon by Feidelson's interlarded interpretations, and the thing is totally out of print. Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill, 1964. ISBN: 067260311X* The "Norton critical" edition, edited by Parker and Hayford. The edition most widely employed by scholars. Stingier with the footnotes than Feidelson, but still a good second choice. Many useful essays at the end. The layout of the text is a bit hard on the eye, though. Make sure you get the SECOND edition, from 2001. ISBN: 0393972836* The "Barnes and Noble Classics" edition. The footnotes for the most part are skimpy and confined to obscure vocabulary, not cultural and literary allusions. ISBN: 1-59308-018-2THESE HAVE A FOOTNOTES SECTION IN THE BACK OF THE BOOK:* The "Oxford World Classics" edition. About 11 pp. at the end. ISBN: 0-19-283385-5* The "Modern Library" edition. About 13 pp. at the end. ISBN: 0-679-78327-X* The "Penguin Classics" edition. About 15 pp. of notes at the end by Tom Quirk. ISBN: 0-14-24.3724-7 (This is their fancy hardbound version: see next item.)* The "Penguin Classics" edition. About 15 pp. of notes at the end by Tom Quirk. ISBN: 0-14-03.9084-7 (This is their paperback edition, which looks totally different but is exactly the same as the previous entry. This claims to be the "definitive text," but any such claim is spurious -- cf. Hayford and Parker [v.s.] for a good discussion of why. Penguin previously came out with an identical-looking but much thicker version annotated by Harold Beaver: the notes for that edition were copious, but on the whole too fanciful and self-indulgent to be of much use.)* The "Library of America" edition. (This is the one included in the same volume with "Redburn" and "White Jacket.") About 9 pp. of notes at the end. Unfortunately, they're a bit skimpy. You see, they're of the "go get it yourself" kind. For example, when Melville writes, "send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger," the footnotes -- the incidence of which is not marked in the running text -- merely says "Luke 16:24". In other words, you've got to look it up yourself. So I would characterize the footnotes as sparse and taciturn: they'll clue you in to the source, but as for the exact wording of something and its accumulated historical connotations, you've got to come up with those yourself. ISBN: 0-940450-09-7THESE HAVE NO FOOTNOTES WHATSOEVER:Why do publishers still print editions of Moby Dick without any footnotes or glossary whatsoever? Who can read it? What a waste of paper. I get so irritated! In any event, the following publishers have decided you'd prefer your white whale raw:* The "Bantam Classic" edition. ISBN: 0-553-21311-3 Ain't got jack.* The "Everyman's Library" edition. ISBN: 0-679-40559-3. Zilch.* The "Penguin 150th Anniversary" edition. ISBN: 0-14-20.0008-6 Bupkiss! Handsome, though.* The "Arion Press" edition. ISBN: 0-520-04354-5. Also annoyingly oversized. And that's my bit of altruism for the week.

591 of 620 people found the following review helpful. This book is gonna make it! By Adam Roberts Finishing "Moby Dick" goes up there with my greatest (and few) academic achievements. It was a gruelling read, but---in the end---completely worthwhile.I've been reading it for 6 months. I started over the summer, during an abroad program in Oxford, and I remember sitting outside reading when one of the professors came over, saw what I was reading, and said: "It's a very strange book, isn't it?"Looking back, that might be the best way to describe it. The blurb from D.H. Lawrence on the back cover agrees: Moby Dick "commands a stillness in the soul, an awe...[it is] one of the strangest and most wonderful books in the world."Now there are those who will say that the book's middle is unbearable---with its maddeningly detailed accounts of whaling. Part of me agrees. That was the hardest to get through. But, still, even the most dull subject offers Melville an opportunity to show off his writing chops. He's a fantastic writer---his text most resembles that of Shakespeare. And, like one Shakespeare's characters, Melville sees all the world as a stage. Consider this beautiful passage from the first chapter:"Though I cannot tell why it was exactly that those stage managers, the Fates, put me down for this shabby part of a whaling voyage, when others were set down for magnifient parts in high tragedies, and short and easy parts in genteel comedies, and jolly parts in farces--though I cannot tell why this was exactly; yet, now that I recall all the circumstances, I think I can see a little into the springs and motives which being cunningly presented to me under various disguises, induced me to set about performing the part I did, besides cajoling me into the delusion that it was a choice resulting from my own unbiased freewill and discriminating judgment."The end of "Moby Dick" informs the rest of the book, and in doing so makes rereading it inevitable. It is telling that Moby Dick doesn't appear until page 494. It is telling, because, the majority of the book is spent in anticipation---in fact, the whole book is anticipation. It's not unlike sex, actually---delaying gratification to a point of almost sublime anguish. What comes at the book's end, then, is mental, physical, and spiritual release (as well as fufillment). The book leaves you with questions both large and small. I was actually most troubled with this question---What happened to Ishmael? No, we learn his fate at the book's end, but where was he throughout it? We all know how it starts---"Call me Ishmael"---and the book's first few chapters show him interacting with Queequeg and an innkeeper. But then we lose him onboard the Pequod---we never see him interact with anyone. No one ever addresses him. He seems to witness extremely private events---conferences in the Captain's quarters, conversations aboard multiple boats, and--what can only be his conjecture--the other characters' internal dialogue. Is he a phantom? What is he that he isn't? Somehow I think this question masks a much larger and more important one.Try "Moby Dick." Actually, don't try it---read it. Work at it. Like lifting weights a bit heavier than you're used to, "Moby Dick" will strengthen your brain muscle. Don't believe those who hate it, they didn't read it. They didn't work at it. Be like Ishmael, who says: "I try all things; I achieve what I can." Or, more daringly, be like Ahab, whose ambition is his curse, but whose curse propels and writes the book itself.

262 of 274 people found the following review helpful. Open your mind By TJ Last year I decided to expand my intellectual horizons by reading a series of American literary classics. Moby Dick was the first book on my list. It took me three months to finish this legendary story and, looking back on it now, I must say that it was worth every minute. To others who are considering this effort I say this: buttress your stamina and open your mind. This is not John Grisham or Tom Clancy. You will be reading high literature and you will be required to think. If you do so, Ishmael, Ahab and crew will open a window to some of mankind's most profound questions: Is it better to fight evil or promote virtue? Where is the line between honorable justice and blind vengeance? Do bad things happen because the universe is evil or just indifferent? The true pleasure to be derived from reading this book can be found by closing its pages every so often and reflecting on the questions that it will raise in your mind. A completely different experience than breezing through the latest best-seller, but much more rewarding.Be aware that Moby Dick is many types of books in one. It is part adventure story, part sermon, part history of whaling, part encyclopedia of whale anatomy, part metaphysical allegory. Expect it to change periodically as you move through it, be receptive to each part, and don't try to compartmentalize it as any one particular type of work.

The book stands well on its own but is even more enjoyable for me because I read the previous two books as well. Anyone who is interested in horses will enjoy these stories because they provide insights into the care of horses, the impact horses can have on our lives, and the impact we can have on horses as their caregivers. This book is appropriate for readers of all ages as is the mystery that Cat has to solve. Finally, I especially enjoyed learning how therapy horses are used to help people with a wide variety of disabilities. What wonderful work that is! I can't wait to find out what is next for Cat and her eccentric group of friends, not to mention the psychic mare Sally.

As usual, Cat is smack in the middle of a murder investigation. I could hardly put the book down while following her adventures and antics. I highly recommend this series to readers of all ages.

I highly anticipated this 3rd on the series because I adore this flawed, funny, and loyal horse trainer and her misfit friends (human and 4-legged). This book also fit in a lot about the business of country music, and a therapeutic riding center. All was woven seamlessly together for a fast-paced, cozy read. Can't wait for book #4. Also saw on the author's website that this series has been optioned for tv!

About the Author Ellis Parker Butler (1869-1937) was a native of Muscatine, Iowa. Dropping out of high school to help support the family he worked in a number of jobs including ones in a spice mill, an oatmeal mill, a china store, and a wholesale grocery. Moving to New York City in 1896, he began writing for trade magazines such as the Tailor's Review, the Wall Paper News, and The Decorative Furnisher.

In 1905, his humorous short story, Pigs is Pigs appeared in the American Magazine, and the following year it was published in book form. Its phenomenal success allowed Butler to give up editing trade papers and turn to full-time authorship.

By A Customer This is a great little story that begins with a typical laugh at beaurocracy gone wrong and gradually swinging over to a great story about the multiplication of the guinea pig.It builds to an hilarious climax that will have you in stiches. This will not appeal to all senses of humour, but to those it does it will hold a great memory once read.

Humor classic By A Customer Pigs is Pigs is Butler's first and most successful book of humor, the story of an inflexible railway clerk who insists on charging the shipping rates for pigs on a crate bearing a couple of guinea pigs. All is well until the aggrieved recipient refuses delivery and the guinea pigs start to breed at a ferocious rate in the railroad station. This is one of the era's most amusing children's works.

The story is based around a simple misunderstanding that escalates to huge proportions. A fun book for most any age.

The books also offer inspiration for decorating cards, paper dolls, and more.

Download your stencils from the Internet By ealovitt The subtitle of this book, "Terrific Stencils and Cards" is a bit misleading, in that it contains no stencils--or cards for that matter. However, you can download all sorts of stencils from the Internet. Just enter 'free stencils' into your search engine, and you'll find stencils ranging from pears to Pee Wee Herman. I downloaded the cat and pear stencils that I used to make a couple of Mother's Day cards (see customer images above). I resized the stencils in my graphics software (Powerpoint), traced them, and filled the silhouettes with 'tangles' from this book.Other supplies needed to create the silhouettes for zentangle greeting cards include card stock, Sakura Micron pens (sizes .005 through .1), an X-acto craft knife with extra packages of #11 blades, scissors, a good cutting surface, and glue in a container with a small tip (alternatively, squeeze out a blob of glue and apply it to the reverse side of the cut-out with a toothpick). I color my zentangle compositions with Prismacolor pens or watercolors. This book is only 18 pages long and contains 40 'tangles.' The books preceding it are "Zentangle Basics [Paperback]," "#3452 Zentangle 2," "#3454 Zentangle 3," "#3456 Zentangle 4," and "#3459 Zentangle 5."I brought this book plus my downloaded stencils to my art class, where they were well-received. Zentangles are fun, and you never know what you're going to end up with. Enjoy!

By maxandtip I really liked the creativity that this book inspires, but the cover of the book is very misleading. There are NO stencils in this book! Not only have I paid for the book, but now I must go out and buy stencils.

Who doesn’t love dog stories? What began as a project to inspire a 4th grade grandson who is allergic to reading (and soap and room cleaning) to enjoy books, "That's So Dog" was intended to provide inviting short stories to a reluctant one-boy-audience. Before long, it became very clear that the universal appeal of dog stories captivates audiences of all ages. Now expanded to engage a wide readership, this family friendly collection of rich canine tales has something for everyone, including powerful messages of inspiration, rescues, heros, loyalty, love, fate, farts, funny bones and a few treasured life lessons for both man and beast. Meet Sparky, Butchie, Riley, Minnie, Sergent Stubby, Max, Dorado, Buddy, Cairo and friends who enthusiastically thank their humans (and their thumbs) for bringing their special stories to life. May readers from 9 to 90 find great comfort, giggles and enjoyment in their telling. "That's So Dog" is kid tested, Grandma approved and available on Amazon.com.

A hermit & herbalist who searches and finds his true love By jpwolf@serv.net or Su Linn This romance novel in my mother's girlhood collection was the first novel I ever read. The Harvester, a hermit who lives alone and supports himself by growing, harvesting and drying medicinal herbs, has vision of a wonderful woman. He sets out in search of her among the city streets by knocking on doors and selling flowers. He finds his girl, but she is traumatized and ill. The Harvester builds a home for her and establishes a relationship only to have her become so ill she almost dies. How he wins both her life and love make this story one you will never forget! If only Hollywood knew, we could have an academy award if this were ever made into a movie - it's a treasure!

Midwest Book Review - this one deserves 100 stars By Laurel Johnson If there is a more beautiful story anywhere than The Harvester, I have yet to find it. This early 20th century classic is as fresh and meaningful today as it was close to a century ago. It speaks of life lived purely and respectfully, of the truest form of love any mortal ever knew, and describes our beautiful America before greed and carelessness trashed her splendor.David Langston is the Harvester, the Medicine Man. At age 26 he lives a solitary life with only his dog and horse to keep him company. He cultivates and harvests medicinal herbs and flowers on an acreage he has carefully developed. Here, in nature's pristine beauty and a world of thriving birds and wildlife, David dreams of someday finding a woman who will love him truly and passionately. He sees his Dream Girl in a vision and sets out with his typical persistence to find her. So certain is he that this lovely vision will become reality, he adds onto his small home and creates furniture lovingly by hand to meet her every comfort.Ruth Jameson is ill in body, mind and spirit, a thin pale wraith of a girl. But to David Langston she is beauty personified. Her past has all but killed her, but David has no doubts. He loves her and will sacrifice anything and everything to win her. But first she must be made whole through pure food and nature's medicine, both laced generously with a decent man's devotion. He marries the girl to save her from cruelty and squallor, and promises to put male desire on hold until she can come to him freely. In his heart of hearts, he knows there is a chance she will never love him but he's willing to face that heartbreak if only she can be well again.I've been reading The Harvester at intervals since I was 12 years old. But this is not a story for children. It has adult themes and dialog. The purity of prose and wonderful descriptions of America, the information about natural healing, and a love story that is unsurpassed make this book an amazing read today - as it was when first written. I give this book my most entusiastic recommendation.

By Anne Wingate http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002RKSYOA/ref=cm_cr_rev_prod_imgHow is the Harvester different from most other men?Because he is a MAN. He is a gentleman from head to toe, despite the fact that he lives in a log cabin and makes his living by collecting herbs from the wild, drying them, and selling them to pharmaceutical companies. When he has a vision of a girl he is fated to marry, he is horrified, because he is so happy in his life as it is that he doesn't want it to change, and he's certain that his married life would be like just about everyone else's: miserable. But he sets forth to find the girl, and has no luck with anything he tries, until he goes to harvest some wild ginseng and finds the girl crying because she had intended to harvest it to try to get enough money to leave her uncle's house, where she has been stuck since her mother's death from starvation in Chicago. Now her aunt has died, and she is alone with a brutal man.The Harvester impulsively proposes to her but promises her that he is marrying her to free her, not to enslave her, and he will ask for no marital rights. If she finds someone else she wants to marry, he will free her on grounds that the marriage was never consummated. (Stratton Porter is more delicate in her wording, but that is what she means.)The rest of the book has its great ups and its agonizing downs, and I don't want to write a spoiler. All I will add is that I have read this book cover to cover a minimum of once a year since I first read it when I was twelve, and I am now 67 and I still cry at the end of it. If you don't wipe tears from your eyes at least one time as you're reading this book, either you are hopelessly and heartlessly sophisticated, or else you had better call an ambulance at once, because there is considerable possibility that you are dead.I love this book. Although it is probably written for women, I would love to see every young man about fourteen years old read it, and maybe some of them would learn that being a man doesn't mean being foul-mouthed and open-zippered. Being a real man, the kind of man the Harvester is in this book, takes more cojones than most men ever think of having.

The Castle of Otranto, by Horace Walpole

Review "Containing a Harry Potter-like array of animated portraits, supernatural adventures in vaults and cellars and astonishing, inexplicable events."  —Telegraph

About the Author An English author, politician and architectural innovator, Horace Walpole is best-known for gothic novels. He was the 4th Earl of Orford and shared the name of his cousin Horatio Nelson. He introduced the neo-Gothic which commenced a new literary trend.

76 of 80 people found the following review helpful. The original Gothic novel By Guillermo Maynez Manfred is an usurpator who wants to consolidate his reign over Otranto. So he tries to marry his weak son to Isabella, heir to a more legitimate prince. But there is an old prophecy which warns against such moves, and the day of the wedding a gigantic iron helmet falls over Manfred's son's head. Then, a creepy -mostly funnily creepy- tale develops. But the plot, though wild and entertaining, is the least important thing about this 1764's novel. The really attractive, entertaining and literarily important thing is the creation of stereotypes: the foul weather; an ancient, dark castle full of closed halls, secret passages, corridors and doors; frightening apparitions; wicked tyrants desperate for fertile women; virtuous and pure ladies; heroic lads; dark and cold forests where ghosts appear, etc. Walpole, who seems to have been an interesting man, must have had enormous fun writing this tone-setting book, which has had plenty of children in literature. When I read it I kept imagining the scenes, the settings and the weather, and it was great to imagine it come alive. Literarily imperfect, it is fun to read and to discover where many of the commonplaces in Gothic literature come from. Well worth it.

41 of 45 people found the following review helpful. A strangely epitomizing expression of gothic literature By James M. Jensen II I read this book back in May, 2005, as part of my Gothic Lit. class. It's not a book I'd read again strictly for pleasure, but there is a strange quality to it that beckons me to read it again. While a fairly absurd and not-very-frightening book (at least to modern readers), this book is worth reading as it seems to contain every element that is a staple of gothic fiction -- and why not? It's the first, after all. After the class and a little thought, I lean toward considering the following elements to be the staples of "true" gothic stories:1. Numinous (frightening and awe-inspiring) supernatural elements (one could say that should be drawn loosely from real-world beliefs, but I won't make that stipulation myself)2. Excessive violence (not necessarily blood/guts/gore, but something that leaves you thinking "that wasn't called for")3. Sexual perversion (not necessarily anything explicit, just hints at something "not right" -- this element makes things both more exciting and more menacing)4. Madness5. Helpless hero (necessarily useless, but overwhelmed, unable to accomplish everything and/or take an active approach to the problem)6. Social injustice (a challenge to "life as usual")6. Religion gone wrong (a bleaker, maybe questioning look at religion and religious beliefs)The surprising thing is that it does this while remaining a fairly tame book. It's excessive violence is performed off-camera, as does the majority of its supernatural elements. Manfred's desire to leave his wife on the basis that their marriage is actually incestuous in order to marry his late son's fiance was sufficiently disturbing to me but far even from X-rated. Manfred is flighty and prone to a kind of mania. The hero is vastly overwhelmed, stays on the defense, and is unable to save the one thing most important to him. At the heart of the novel are pointed social and religious questions/commentary.One of the things that has fascinated me with this book is the retellings it has inspired in The Old English Baron and The Castles of Athlin & Dunbayne. Both of those are significantly less gothic than Otranto (especially Castles, which is not gothic at all), but are better retellings of the core romance between the hero and his love. All in all, I'd recommend this work to anyone interested in gothic literature. I'd also recommend The Old English Baron and The Castles of Athlin & Dunbayne (especially the latter) as better retellings of the romance in the book.

16 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Nick Groom's 2014 Oxford edition of "Otranto" is astonishing. By Mike Emery This reissue of "The Castle of Otranto" is a much needed updating of the book's supporting material for the 21st century. Groom has read the entire correspondence of Horace Walpole (which runs over 4000 letters, many of them long), and makes brilliant use of them in his new introduction to this book. The 29-page introduction places the novel in terms of the historical Goths, the archaism and sublimity that were all the rage in 1760s Britain, and the religious and political circumstances that led Walpole to write the book. Groom sifts recent scholarship with a profound knowledge of Walpole's life, times, and architectural proclivities. A new bibliography, chronology of Walpole (in paired columns labelled "Life" and "Historical and cultural background"), appendix with "Gothic contexts" (excerpts from other books by Walpole and Richard Hurd), and 20 pages of new explanatory notes on the text all make this edition essential. If you care about this novel, you must have this new edition of it.

"Wherever you find men ruled merely by mystery, it is the mystery of iniquity. If the devil tells you something is too fearful to look at, look at it. If he says something is too terrible to hear, hear it. If you think some truth unbearable, bear it." G. K. Chesterton The Wisdom of Father Brown, "The Purple Wig" In G. K. Chesterton's 1914 sequel to "The Innocence of Father Brown", we find the tenacious little priest hounding thieves, traitors, and killers throughout England, and even to France and Italy. Here are twelve more cases featuring Father Brown, a priest turned detective who combines philosophical and spiritual reasoning with scientific observation to solve crimes. In these long–cherished tales, Chesterton laid the foundation for future detective figures in literature, such as Hercule Poirot, Miss Marple, Ellery Queen, and Nero Wolfe. Unlike other writers of his time, who concocted outlandish crimes and intricate puzzles for the protagonist to solve, Chesterton pioneered the cozy mystery, narrowing the scope of the investigation to limited time, limited space, and a limited number of suspects, with all of the clues revealed to the reader, as well as to the detective. Chesterton is highly regarded as a biting social commentator, and his humorous and insightful comparisons leave readers reeling. The tales in this collection are short, easy reads with strong plots, all connected by the clever cleric's intuitive understanding of the dark side of human nature.

The Wisdom Of Father Brown: A Collection of Short Stories, by G.K. Chesterton

Review ''The unassuming cleric, whose humble conviction that his God will eventually triumph over the souls of even the most evil of criminals, is the quiet but insistent heartbeat of these unusual exercises in detective fiction.'' --Sunday Times (London) on The Innocence of Father Brown

From the Publisher 8 1-hour cassettes

About the Author Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874–1936) was an English writer, philosopher, satirist, and social critic. During his lifetime, the prolific Chesterton wrote eighty books, several hundred poems, some two hundred short stories, four thousand essays, and several plays. He was also known as a strong debater and Christian apologist. He often took on what he considered to be the flawed philosophy of modernism found in the writings of his good friends Oscar Wilde and George Bernard Shaw. It was Shaw who once referred to Chesterton in Time magazine as "a man of colossal genius." Chesterton's writings consistently displayed wit and a sense of humor. His ingenious use of paradox in his commentaries on the leading political, economic, philosophical, and theological beliefs of his day makes his writings as relevant today as they were a century ago.

A Solinas Most book detectives are either professional, or they don't have jobs and do detective work in their spare time. G.K. Chesterton's Father Brown is a little different -- a kindly, sweet little priest. In Chesterton's second Father Brown book, "The Wisdom of Father Brown," we get a series of bizarre, sometimes dangerous mysteries that Father Brown must puzzle out. Some of the crimes are simple once Brown explains them, but others are devious, chilling things that are wrapped in Chesterton's poetic prose. We're introduced to Father Brown when he comes into a famous criminologist's waiting room, and tells the man, "You see, her mother won't let her get engaged." The criminologist reluctantly assists the little priest in investigating a bizarre crime, involving a hat, a tied-up man, and a mysterious person called "Mr. Glass." The answer is a lot simpler than the criminologist believes. In the stories that follow, the priest investigates many other mysteries: a sinister voodoo cult, a nobleman with a deformed ear, a gang of Italian thieves, a lie-detector with one major problem (the operator), a girl who is blackmailed for a crime nobody knows she committed, a burning tower, a murder that may be suicide, and a man who is under a horrible death curse.G.K. Chesterton liked to write mysteries that were a lot simpler than they appeared to be, or else had some sort of bizarre twist at the end. Both kinds of mysteries show up in this collection of short stories, but only occasionally can readers guess what is going on, until Father Brown spells it out with some little detail of human nature. And Father Brown is a likable little guy, who looks like an "innocent goblin" and doesn't have to overwork himself to solve mysteries. It's his shrewd brain and rather childlike straightforwardness that carries him through, as well as his uncanny knowledge of human nature ("The reliable machine always has to be worked by an unreliable machine.... I mean Man").If there's a flaw, it's the rather dated racial descriptions, although those were typical of the time. Chesterton's writing is absolutely exquisite, like poetry rendered down into prose ("Over the black pine-wood came flying and flashing in the moon, a naked sword"), especially in the story where Father Brown and his pal take a cruise through the older areas of England."The Wisdom of Father Brown" is a lot like the kindly priest who does the detective -- brilliant, unassuming, and very intriguing. Definitely a must for mystery buffs.

Interesting collection of short mystery stories By SDD The Wisdom of Father Brown is an intriguing collection of mystery short stories centered around none other than Father Brown. These stories are normally fairly well set up, and inlcude good twists at the end that mystery readers would come to expect from good mystery authors. However, Chesterton takes quite a bit of time in setting up the story, which can amount to a bit of tedious reading sometimes. Yet, these vignettes end well and I am impressed with Chesterton's imagery and use of suspense. It also helps that this book is free. Overall, I would recommend this to any detective book fan.

The Wisdom of Father Brown By sherlockholmesguy The Wisdom of Father Brown was written by G.K.Chesterton, a well known author of the 19th and 20th century. This is a collection of 12 totally seperate stories that are independent of each other but have one common thread. The constant is a quite small figure of a man named Father Brown, an English priest who just happens to be were the action is. He just shows up and gathers clues, primarily by noticing even the most obscure details and putting the case to bed. Actually, one of the best things about these stories is the clues are often disclosed in the story telling and the reader often can figure "who done it" before the ending. It is very much like the other Father Brown collection available from Kindle, namely "The Innocence of Father Brown", which also is a collection of independent stories by Chesterton. The stories are interesting, but short and can be read most easily one or two at a time and resumed again later. I would suggest that if you read the other Father Brown mysteries, you would equally enjoy this selection.

Hueg I have been hearing about this book since i was a little boy.Herman Hueg was my great grandfather, so my review may be somewhat bias.Years ago I had relegated this book to the fog a familial folklore,so one can imagine my great surprise when I learned not only that it existed, but was available through Amazon. After reading it I realised the depth of my great grand father's creativity and the beauty and simplicity of his inventions.A fantastic story of success by a turn of the century immigrant. Thank for helping me find it

Includes: 15 Colored Illustrations and Biography The Adventures of Robin Hood of Great Renown in Nottinghamshire is an 1883 novel by the American illustrator and writer Howard Pyle. Consisting of a series of episodes in the story of the English outlaw Robin Hood and his band of Merry Men, the novel compiles traditional material into a coherent narrative in a colorful, invented "old English" idiom that preserves some flavor of the ballads, and adapts it for children. The novel is notable for taking the subject of Robin Hood, which had been increasingly popular through the 19th century, in a new direction that influenced later writers, artists, and filmmakers through the next century.

About the Author Howard Pyle was born on March 5, 1853 in Wilmington, Delaware. In 1894, he taught art at the Drexel Institute and in 1900 founded the Howard Pyle School of Illustration Art. Although he did not actually create the legends of the characters, nor have much regard for historical accuracy, he did write and illustrate stories about pirates, King Arthur and of course, “The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood.” Vincent Van Gogh was a fan of Pyle’s. Howard traveled to Italy to study mural painting in 1910 and died on November 9, 1911 in Florence of a kidney infection.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Terrific adventure By S. Bazinet This classic is such for a reason: adventure joyfully mixed with humor. I've been reading this aloud to my elementary-age boys and we are thoroughly enjoying it. Who knew it was so funny? We love reading it on the Kindle so we can instantly pull up definitions of archaic words when necessary.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Good fun By Katie Prestwich This is mostly a collection of stories without a real storyline running all the way through. The stories are fun and adventurous, though. I liked the second half of the book better than the first. By the middle of the book I felt that the stories were all starting to sound the same, but in the second half of the book things were much more original with varying plots, and I became more interested and more connected to the characters.

Crabtree Jealousy, theater, joy, church, affairs, revenge, tragedy, stalking, suicide, and much more can be found herein!A young man is quite amourous toward a gregarious, young stage actress but she leads him on. He's also burdened with a solid competitor for her affections. The young man's emotional journey, tenoned with the shrewd and subtle humor of the work, will hold the reader's attention to the very end.The author, Anatole France, (a pseudonym for Jacques Anatole Thibault, 1844-1924), was one of the great novelists of his day. He was a very prolific writer in the mainstream of French classicism."A Mummer's Tale," (aka, "Histoire Comique") was written in 1903 but remains timeless in its certainty to entertain those who enjoy a good, solid novel. If you're a bit apathetic about the dreary selection of novels on the current market, this fine story might just make you a huge fan of Anatole France.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A masterwork of readable late-1800s literature! By Patrick W. Crabtree Here, we have a fine novel, not much heard of, by a Master of the light fiction genre. I don't know why it hasn't caught on like wildfire other than, perhaps, the academics at the various colleges have somehow overlooked it and have thus not promoted it to students. It's the story of two prospective lovers of a woman, a vain theater actress, who is also a bit of a tease. One of these fellows lusts for her moreso than the second, (the more confident of the two), which leads the former down a path of dubious decisions. The actress, being a tease and not a big thinker as well, will leave MEN who read this book wishing to strangle her just a little and from time to time. *.*But that is the beauty of this book -- the reader becomes engaged in the action from the very start. This is the Hallmark of France's craft-work.This volume work pretty much offers up all the reasons that we read great fiction including, drama, love, religion, jealousy, and, in this instance, suicide -- a really shocking one.So, about the time you feel that you've read all that is worth reading, try this one and you'll have found yet another. I really thoroughly enjoyed this one.
