Émile Zola is one of the greatest writers of the 19th century, and one of France’s best known citizens. In his life, Zola was the most important exemplar of the literary school of naturalism and a major figure in the political liberalization of France. Around the end of his life, Zola was instrumental in helping secure the exoneration of the falsely accused and convicted army officer Alfred Dreyfus, a victim of anti-Semitism. The Dreyfus Affair was encapsulated in the renowned newspaper headline J'Accuse.More than half of Zola's novels were part of this set of 20 collectively known as Les Rougon-Macquart. Unlike Honore de Balzac, who compiled his works into La Comedie Humaine midway through, Zola mapped out a complete layout of his series. Set in France's Second Empire, the series traces the "environmental" influences of violence, alcohol and prostitution which became more prevalent during the second wave of the Industrial Revolution. The series examines two branches of a family: the respectable Rougons and the disreputable Macquarts for five generations. Zola explained, "I want to portray, at the outset of a century of liberty and truth, a family that cannot restrain itself in its rush to possess all the good things that progress is making available and is derailed by its own momentum, the fatal convulsions that accompany the birth of a new world."

Doctor Pascal, by Emile Zola

About the Author ?mile Zola was a French writer who is recognized as an exemplar of literary naturalism and for his contributions to the development of theatrical naturalism. Zola s best-known literary works include the twenty-volume Les Rougon-Macquart, an epic work that examined the influences of violence, alcohol and prostitution on French society through the experiences of two families, the Rougons and the Macquarts. Other remarkable works by Zola include Contes ? Ninon, Les Myst?res de Marseille, and Th?r?se Raquin.

In addition to his literary contributions, Zola played a key role in the Dreyfus Affair of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. His newspaper article J Accuse accused the highest levels of the French military and government of obstruction of justice and anti-semitism, for which he was convicted of libel in 1898. After a brief period of exile in England, Zola returned to France where he died in 1902. ?mile Zola is buried in the Panth?on alongside other esteemed literary figures Victor Hugo and Alexandre Dumas.

The novel is more about him and his niece than about his musing on the heredity theory. All his scientific talks show no more than just one side of his personality, because showing that a certain physiological or a psychological anomaly passes either directly or indirectly from ascendants to descendants is a purely scientific task. A novel can show no proofs, only examples of such passing. Thus, Angelique Rougon in "Le Reve/The Dream", Pauline Quenu in "La Joie de Vivre/Zest for Life" and, in particular Jeanne Grandjean in "Une Page d'Amour/A Love Episode" clearly inherited a neurotic illness from their great-grand-mother Adelaide Fouque. And three members of the generation below (sons of Maxime Rougon, Nana and Claude Lantier) died in their childhood of various diseases, which shows complete family degeneracy. A more direct passing would be Gervaise Macquart's ("l'Assommoir/the Drum Shop")addiction to alcohol, which she inherited from her father Antoine, who died of a spontaneous ignition in a drunken stupor. However, there is no explanation either in any of the novels or in the genealogical tree how such phlegmatic and mercenary-minded people as Lisa Quenu and her husband ("Le Ventre de Paris/The Underbelly of Paris") produced such a joyous, generous and selfless daughter Pauline ("La Joie de Vivre/Zest for Life") or how Francois and Marthe Mouret, Adelaide Fouque's grandchildren, who die after losing their sanity ("La Conquete de Plassans/The Conquest of Plassans") and who produced a feeble-minded daughter and a neurotic son, whose disease developed into mysticism ("La faute de Abbe Mouret/The Sin of Father Mouret"), could along with that produce such an vigorous and business-minded son Octave ("Pot-Bouille/Pot Luck" and "Au Bonheur des Dames/"the Ladies' Paradise"). What makes it particularly hard to explain the genetic influence is the fact that family members (especially in late Rougon-Macquart novels) interact with each other little if any. Thus, three Lantier brothers seem totally alien to each other and their parents, Angelique Rougon "Le Reve/The Dream" is brought up under no influence of her mother Sidonie, Helene Grandjean ("Une Page d'Amour/A Love Episode") never has any contact with her brother Francois and Jean Macquart ("La Terre/The Earth" and "La Debacle/The Downfall") with his sisters Lisa and Gervaise. Furthermore, if to look at environment vs. heredity, things turn out to be in favor of the former, because there are characters who undergo a personality change. Thus, Octave Mouret in "Au Bonheur des Dames/The Ladies' Paradise" is a lot different from Octave in "Pot-Boille/Pot Luck", Arstide Saccard in "L'Argent/The Money" from Arstide in "La Curee/The Kill". Therefore, the heredity theory in Zola's novels is portrayed to a much lesser degree than the history of the French society under Napoleon III.

While it serves the purpose of an epilogue, it is also an impressive novel in its own right, and stands alone as a great work of literature. Pascal Rougon is a semi-retired physician who devotes most of his time to the study of evolution. An important asset in his research is the cabinet of files he keeps on his own diverse and dysfunctional family, the Rougons and Macquarts. Through detailed descriptions of these family dossiers, Zola reviews the events of the previous nineteen novels. In doing so, he provides us with a "Where are they now?" synopsis of the characters, and thoroughly explains the theories of heredity that underlie the series.Evolutionary discourse only comprises a portion of the book, however, as most of the novel is devoted to the relationship between Pascal and his young niece Clotilde. In Pascal, Zola creates a very autobiographical character, and allows us glimpses into his private life. Zola fancied himself a scientist, and his novels his experiments. At the time Zola wrote this book he was falling in love with a young mistress of his own. Throughout the book, Pascal, approaching old age, looks back on his life and contemplates its purpose. Zola uses Pascal as a mouthpiece to ponder aloud philosophical issues, like the conflict between knowledge and faith. Can the two coexist, or must one vanquish the other in order for mankind to truly progress? He debates the definition of a life well-spent: Is it better to devote one's time on this earth to work, or to the enjoyment of simpler pleasures like love and family? While many men seek immortality through offspring, Pascal has spent his whole life striving for an intellectual legacy of scientific achievement. As he feels the end of his life drawing nearer, he, like Zola, wonders if he has made the right choice in life.I would not put this work in the same class as Zola's four or five masterpieces, but it's in the better half of the Rougon-Macquart saga. Those who have enjoyed some of Zola's better-known novels will find much to enjoy in this one as well.

After 30 years of scientific and genealogical research, a doctor in his late 50s decides his life is meaningless without children and accepts his 25-year old niece's offer to have his child. He dies of a heart attack, and his mother manages to destroy all his papers except his family tree diagram. This, the last in the 20-book Rougon-Macquart cycle was described by Zola himself as the summary and the conclusion of his work. Intellectually, it is highly adventurous in parts, even by today's standards, but it seems to fall flat at the end with its implication that the whole point of life is simply to breed and pass on your genes. You could say this book is the ultimate hymn to occupational therapy. However lofty a view human beings may have of themselves and their activities, they are really no different from any other form of life.

A little reflection will show that humbug is an astonishingly wide-spread phenomenon—in fact almost universal. And this is true, although we exclude crimes and arrant swindles from the definition of it, according to the somewhat careful explanation which is given in the beginning of the chapter succeeding this one.

A classic review of snake oil salesmen and other charlatans By Book Lover Phineas Taylor Barnum (July 5, 1810 - April 7, 1891), American showman who is best remembered for his entertaining hoaxes and for founding the circus that eventually became Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus. In Brooklyn, New York in 1871, he established "P.T. Barnum's Grand Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan, and Circus", a traveling amalgamation of circus, menagerie and museum of "freaks", which by 1872 was billing itself as "The Greatest Show on Earth".There's a sucker born every minute" is a phrase often credited to P.T. Barnum. However, when Barnum's biographer tried to track down when Barnum had uttered this phrase, all of Barnum's friends and acquaintances told him it was out of character. Barnum's credo was more along the lines of "there's a customer born every minute" -- he wanted to find ways to draw new customers in all the time because competition was fierce and people bored easilyBarnum wrote several books, including The Humbugs of the World (1865), Struggles and Triumphs (1869), and his Autobiography (first in 1854, and later editions including 1869).Barnum is a treat to read and is never boring! I highly recommend his books.

Published in 1920, and taking its title from a line of the Rupert Brooke poem Tiare Tahiti, the book examines the lives and morality of post–World War I youth. Its protagonist, Amory Blaine, is an attractive Princeton University student who dabbles in literature. The novel explores the theme of love warped by greed and status seeking.

Amazon.com Review Fitzgerald's first novel, reprinted in the handsome Everyman's Library series of literary classic, uses numerous formal experiments to tell the story of Amory Blaine, as he grows up during the crazy years following the First World War. It also contains a new introduction by Craig Raine that describes critical and popular reception of the book when it came out in 1920.

From Publishers Weekly Fitzgerald's first novel, about a coterie of Princeton socialites, appears in a 75th anniversary edition. Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal Fitzgerald's semiautobiographical first novel was considered intellectual and daring when it was published in 1920. Amory Blaine grows up in St. Paul in the early years of the century. His mother is an alcoholic whose wealth is sufficient to accommodate her eccentricities. She dotes on her son and encourages him to indulge his whims. His father is conspicuously absent. Amory observes the social graces, as befits someone of his class, but he is only capable of doing so superficially. He is always aware of himself and how he fits into his immediate surroundings. Because of this constant self-analysis, he finds it difficult to relax, to accept people as they are, and to make friends. It is at Princeton that Amory comes into his own, determined to make the best of what he considers from the outset to be the best years of his life. Narrator Dick Hill brings Amory to life with an energetic reading that captures the emotional swings of a spoiled and shallow man who never grows up. The first thing that struck me on reading this was the timelessness of its subject matter, no matter how dated the setting is. The Ivy League of Fitzgerald's indifferent hero, Amory Blaine, is a thing of the past, with only the faintest reminders of its aura of American royalty remaining today. Reading about Amory's days at Princeton is a bit like looking at the ancient photographs of 19th century football teams that every university seems to have on display in some corner of the campus, with the added twist that most of those long-ago jocks were presumably the sons of bankers and senators. And yet, Fitzgerald's depiction of a whirlwind of exhilaration, alienation, eagerness for the future and a sense that it should all be more meaningful is still all too recognizable to those of us who are just a few years out of college. So like all the best fiction, the story works both on a historical and a contemporary level.Amory isn't the most sympathetic of protagonists. Coming from a non-aristocratic but quite cushy background, he's all you would expect from a Fitzgerald hero: full of himself, indifferent to the less fortunate, somewhat lazy, and at once condescending to and inept with women. But this is a story of young adulthood in the last gasps of the pre-World War I upper-crust, and Amory is the perfect vehicle for illustrating the youth of that time and place. Although the relative lack of details provided about Amory's experience in the war is odd, it adds to his Everyman quality for the generations since his, all of which have had their own reasons for a bleak outlook at some point even if few could match the sheer trauma of 1917-18. The one real flaw in the story is an inconsistent, and often unconvincing, quality when it comes to how and why Amory falls for the several women he endures romantic misadventures with. For all the heartbreak he endures, the reader is often left wondering where his attraction stemmed from in the first place - an odd shortcoming considering how good Fitzgerald was at illustrating that issue in later works. But the romantic episodes that do work are vivid enough to forgive the weaker ones. Also, as usual, Fitzgerald's narrative style is somewhat purple; but he's so good at it that it usually doesn't strike the reader as a problem.Bleak as it may be, this is a great book for anyone who has survived young adulthood and remembers it honestly. Just try not to laugh or cringe next time somebody wants to talk about "the good old days."

53 of 55 people found the following review helpful. The first display of Fitzgerald's talent By John Martin F. Scott Fitzgerald's novels are a one trick pony in the sense that he writes about the same time period (the 1920's), the same kind of people (rich or successful Americans) and protagonists who suffer the same fate (men whose ultimate failures are the result of their own shortcomings and the influence of women). His works are also highly autobiographical. Thus to read Fitzgerald with understanding one should start at the beginning (This Side of Paradise), move to the full bloom of his talent (The Great Gatsby) and culminate at the end (Tender is the Night). It would help to read a good biography along the way. The other option is to just read Gatsby which is one of the finest American novels ever written. This Side of Paradise is his first novel and here we see both the promise of the character, Amory Blaine, and the author. On the very first page of the novel Fitzgerald displays his talent for words in his description of Amory's mother: "All in all Beatrice O'Hara absorbed the sort of education that will be quite impossible ever again; a tutelage measured by the number of things and people one could be contemptuous of and charming about; a culture rich in all the arts and traditions barren of all ideas in the last of those days when the great gardener clipped the inferior roses to produce one perfect bud." This lengthy sentence, despite its seeming awkwardness, tells us all we need to know about Beatrice and suggests that the son will share the same qualities. Other examples of Fitzgerald's facility with words follow. On page 45 he describes Isabelle thusly: "She paused at the top of the staircase. The sensations attributed to divers on springboards, leading ladies on opening nights, and lumpy, husky young men on the day of the Big Game, crowded through her. She should have descended to a burst of drums or a discordant blend of themes from `Thais' and `Carmen.' She had never been so curious about her appearance, she had never been so satisfied with it. She has been sixteen years old for six months." And on page 47 is Isabelle's description of Amory: "she had expected him to be dark and of garter-advertisement slenderness." Only Fitzgerald could come up with such vivid and evocative descriptions. One fault of the book is that it is too episodic without clear transitions. First Amory is a child, then a student at Princeton, then a soldier (although we really do not see this part of this life and it seems to have not affected him), then a lover of Rosalind, then at loose ends, then has a relationship with Eleanor, then the book ends with Amory alone in the world and spouting socialist maxims. It is hard to picture this individual, who for 200 pages has been totally absorbed with himself, suddenly developing a social conscience!Another problem I have is that Fitzgerald tries too hard to show his education. The book is full of poetry and literary references. It is written much as a college student would write a paper to try to impress the professor and thus get a high grade, rather than in a manner that is appropriate to the telling of a story. Fitzgerald is, of course, at this point in his life not far removed from Princeton and perhaps is still writing as a college student. In the end, then, we should read This Side of Paradise for the beauty of the language and not be overly concerned with the story line and characters.

I read it several times and carried it with me around the dreary halls of the oppresive, boring land called High School. Even as a kid I sensed Fitzgerald's amazing writing gift: his effortless way of painting a visual picture in the mind of the reader. He was always extremely funny, off-beat and his charactizations are usually on the mark. Though Amory Blaine's psyche wanders a trifle after the first hundred pages, it's impossible not to gravitate towards him, the things he says and the stunts he pulls. After 25 years I picked up the book again recently. Dusting off my old copy, I re-read the pages that had so captivated me as a teenager. Time dulls many things and people change. But I still love the book and think it's a brilliant first novel. Though it's sappy in spots and it definitely lags at the end, Fitzgerald still had a beautiful ability to harness the emotions of the reader into a world now vanished. It's not his most complete or mature work by a wide margin, but it matters not. This is still a great book, especially for young people or those still a kid at heart.

I am very pleased with my purchase.I paid full price for this item and was not compensated in any way for this honest review.

Carey Harrison knows that it is terrible for a reader to finish his book By Carol Elkins Carey Harrison knows that it is terrible for a reader to finish his book. It's as though he loves us so, our hearts will break. And so he creates an ending for us, so that we are better able to let it end, an ending which incorporates the book into our own lives to come. Nevertheless, i do not think too much time will go by before i will be impelled to go back and read "Dog's Mercury" again.

The Million Pound Bank Note, by Mark Twain

About the Author Mark Twain, born Samuel Langhorne Clemens, was an American humorist and writer, who is best known for his enduring novels The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which has been called the Great American Novel. Raised in Hannibal, Missouri, Twain held a variety of jobs including typesetter, riverboat pilot, and miner before achieving nationwide attention for his work as a journalist with The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. He earned critical and popular praise for his wit and enjoyed a successful career as a public speaker in addition to his writing. Twain s works were remarkable for his ability to capture colloquial speech, although his adherence to the vernacular of the time has resulted in the suppression of his works by schools in modern times. Twain s birth in 1835 coincided with a visit by Halley s Comet, and Twain predicted, accurately, that he would go out with it as well, dying the day following the comet s return in 1910.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Easy and entertaining By Max Klepp I've read this book many years (actually dekades) ago (in German), when I was a little younger and enjoyed it thoroughly. I still could remember most of the story. So I was wondering how I would like the original, and after so much time has gone by. I have to say I still liked it. Well, it's Mark Twain. Though, I have to say, when I read Twain's biography recently, this was much less enjoyable. It was a chore. If you need something enjoyable and easy to read, the Million Pound Bank-Note would be a very good candidate.

The Lock of Indian Springs grabs us with an unforgettable narrative voice that draws us into a young boy’s life—and leaves us longing for more. It’s 1960, school is out for the summer, and rural Mississippi yields plenty of excitement for a boy and his friends—play, life’s adventures, dangers, and dilemmas—all experienced and told from the charming point-of-view of eleven-year-old Vern. Indeed, Vern takes chances, wrestles with outcomes, and asks himself the bigger questions—like how to go somewhere without his little sister, and whether he might go to hell for losing his daddy’s wrench. Then life takes on scary new dimensions--from fires to near-drownings and the death of a beloved neighbor. Vern must suddenly bargain with life in deeper ways. But he is helped by his daddy showing him what it means to “do what’s right,” no matter what, and that of course, you can always just go fishin’.

Professionally, he advanced from teacher, to principal, to Assistant Superintendent, finishing his career as Superintendent of Schools. By Amazon Customer Mr. Collins brought back many memories for me as I read the stories in this book. I also grew up in Mississippi but in the 60's and 70's. Finally leaving home in the 80's. I would read aloud some of the stories as we were traveling to doctor visits with my mom and sister. We had many good laughs, reading this and causing us to remember some of our on memories.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Growing Up in Rural Mississippi in the 60's By avidreader The Lock of Indian Springs takes the reader back to the 60's in a rural area in Mississippi. The main character, Vern, is an 11 year old boy. The story revolves around his younger sister Carolyn, his parents, and extended family. A strong bond between Vern and his mother is a stabilizing influence in his life. Vern loves and respects his father, but sometimes he feels intimidated by him. However, that doesn't stop Vern from watching his Dad in his car repair shop. He begins to develop skills and is given the opportunity to recharge batteries and earn a little bit of money. Vern's relationship with his younger sister is typical of siblings. Sometimes they fight and other times they depend on each other to stay out of trouble Vern has adventures with his cousin James and sometimes there are consequences to pay. Vern has begun to listen carefully in church and knows he has told a few lies that he realizes are sins. He struggles with this and prays for forgiveness. It is refreshing to see that in spite of being poor, this is a close knit family and how they handle the hard times in life. Vern's father always tells him to "do the right thing" in life which he finds is not always easy. While reading, the reader will feel like a part of the family. Sometimes you find you have tears in your eyes and the next minute you are laughing. When the story ends, the reader is left with the feeling of wanting more. The author so aptly describes the setting, it makes the reader feel as if he/she is actually a part of the story. I strongly recommend this book for older teens and adults of all ages.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I would compare this to Huck Finn By Donna Hardy The author's detailed descriptions of Indian Springs, Plattsburg and Louisville are so vividly accurate. These places are actual communities in rural Mississippi and he has truly captured life and the social customs during this time. His father; William, was as well thought of in this community as portrayed by Vern! This book brought back Pleasant memories of a time when people truly loved family & thy neighbor. I enjoyed reading this delightful book.

His story is an inspiration to those who admire cats and seek to understand how they can help humans create lives full of meaning in a world filled with confusion and despair.

A gem of a book - both funny and philosophical By Johann David Renner I read on average one book a week, mainly literary fiction, thrillers and classic crime novels. I can say without hesitation, this book is one of the best I have read so far this year (it’s November already). “The Virgin Cat: A Feline Fantasy” is a true gem of a book. Already the first sentence clicked with me. People who read a bit of American fiction, novels from the Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Salinger era, will quickly figure out why.During the first third or so of the book you find out a bit about the cat. He’s a tomcat called Happy, which, by the way, is not a name he’s happy with. He thinks of himself as being grumpy. There are many things that occupy his young mind: sex, to begin with. Nobody seems to get enough of it. The dog’s not getting any sex, he contemplates, and for all he knows the humans aren’t getting any either. But then an event takes place that puts sex in a different perspective. Throughout the book I often enjoyed the dry humour associated with Happy’s observations. As he gets older, he reflects on his relationships with other creatures in his life, he reflects on his actions, on being adventurous, on drugs (when he overdoses with catnip), on food and finally on the purpose of his life. He discusses this topic with another two cats. Why do animals and humans dangerous things? he asks himself. He includes in his contemplations characters as diverse as Charlie in Two and a Half Men, Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova. And it is in these parts of the book in which Clive Lilwall demonstrates his strength as an author that is to be taken seriously. Throughout the book he combines events in the cat’s life with fascinating philosophical topics. During the second half of the book he delves into these topics deeper and deeper, but without ever making them complicated or academic. This is truly a gem of a book. I enjoyed it, I highly recommend it and I hope that the author’s next book is about Darcy, the dog. We know what the cat thinks about the dog, but what are the dog’s thoughts about the cat?

A truly remarkable book By Katy Brodsky I am a cat lover, especially Siamese, so I did choose this book by its great cover. Then I discovered that this was no ordinary read. Surprisingly, like no book I have ever readbefore. And there are millions of books out there. The point of view of the cat unique...clever, beautifully and carefully written. The life of the cat Is explained with often wicked and brilliant humour. The " thoughts" of the cat...and the cat's nine lives make a refreshing story."Purrfect" I thought as I finished the last chapter. Highly recommended for all the above reasons.

I really enjoyed this book, it was quite creative and I liked the humour aspect to it. It's not often you come across a unique and refreshing story like this, I recommend ... and will be keeping an eye on my own three cats from now on!

Henry David Thoreau ( July 12, 1817 – May 6, 1862) was an American author, poet, philosopher, abolitionist, naturalist, tax resister, development critic, surveyor, and historian. A leading transcendentalist, Thoreau is best known for his book Walden, a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings, and his essay Resistance to Civil Government (also known as Civil Disobedience), an argument for disobedience to an unjust state. Thoreau's books, articles, essays, journals, and poetry total over 20 volumes. Among his lasting contributions are his writings on natural history and philosophy, where he anticipated the methods and findings of ecology and environmental history, two sources of modern-day environmentalism. His literary style interweaves close natural observation, personal experience, pointed rhetoric, symbolic meanings, and historical lore, while displaying a poetic sensibility, philosophical austerity, and "Yankee" love of practical detail. He was also deeply interested in the idea of survival in the face of hostile elements, historical change, and natural decay; at the same time he advocated abandoning waste and illusion in order to discover life's true essential needs. He was a lifelong abolitionist, delivering lectures that attacked the Fugitive Slave Law while praising the writings of Wendell Phillips and defending abolitionist John Brown. Thoreau's philosophy of civil disobedience later influenced the political thoughts and actions of such notable figures as Leo Tolstoy, Mahatma Gandhi, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Thoreau is sometimes cited as an anarchist. Though Civil Disobedience seems to call for improving rather than abolishing government - "I ask for, not at once no government, but at once a better government" - the direction of this improvement points toward anarchism: "'That government is best which governs not at all;' and when men are prepared for it, that will be the kind of government which they will have." Richard T. Drinnon partly blames Thoreau for the ambiguity, noting that Thoreau's "sly satire, his liking for wide margins for his writing, and his fondness for paradox provided ammunition for widely divergent interpretations of 'Civil Disobedience'."

Wild Apples: The History of the Apple Tree, by Henry David Thoreau

About the Author Henry David Thoreau was an American author, poet, and philosopher, who is best known for his works Waldena treatise about living in concert with the natural worldand Civil Disobedience, in which he espoused the need to morally resist the actions of an unjust state. Thoreau s work heavily reflects the ideologies of the American transcendentalists, and he has long been considered a leading figure in the movement along with Ralph Waldo Emerson, Bronson Alcott, and, at first, Nathaniel Hawthorne (who changed his views later in life). In addition to his writing, which totaled more than twenty volumes, Thoreau was an active abolitionist, and lectured regularly against the Fugitive Slave Law. Thoreau died in 1862, and is buried along with Louisa May Alcott, Ellery Channing, and other notable Americans in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord, Massachusetts.

Her parents, my grandparents, were Harry and Lillian Apple. They made their way separately from the Ukraine to Philadelphia, New Jersey, New York, and back to New Jersey. Their kind love is always at my core. I have named a business for them and planted it here outside of Concord, Massachusetts, a few miles from the hill in Esterbooks’s woods where Thoreau found apple growing with pines, birches, maples, and oaks." ―Phil Zuckerman, Publisher

Thoreau is Wonderful By Nicholas Trandahl I must admit that I wouldn't have read a book about the lore of apples in the 1800s had it not been rather short in length and written by the amazing Henry Thoreau. But as it was, it contained the unmatched descriptions and fervent passion that is so evident in all of Thoreau's writings. I wouldn't recommend this work to anybody that isn't a follower of Thoreau, but for those of us that are, this writing about apples is a quick easy read that inspires you to take a stroll outside with an apple in your hand.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. very interesting By Connie White This book might not be for everyone. It was the first of Thoreau that I have read, and might seem a bit "plodding" to some readers. However, I find his exploration of wild apples, their origin, and how they spread across the country to be quite interesting. Also, his appraisal of the flavors of wild apples compared with our cultivated species reminded me that what we find in our groceries is often just not the same as the flavors of plants from the wild or from our own gardens. And enjoyable read for a winter's evening.

Very nice for Christmas By Kathy W This is a very nice coloring book for both adults and children, to help relieve stress or just enjoy the relaxing therapy of putting colors on paper. This 2015 book contains 25 beautiful Christmas mandalas with figures such as Mary and the Christ Child, Santa, snowman, trees, toys, and others. Very nice intricate designs that an adult can do all kinds of craft projects with, such as trace and paint. A child could also color these and make a Christmas gift for mom. At the very least, it is therapy. Beautiful designs. Get a pack of colored fine tip markers or pencils. At the end of the Kindle book, there is an option to download and print as a pdf.

These are designs you'll need colored pencils for to stay inside the lines. A few had Santa in them but most were other Christmas icons like teddy bears, ornaments, mittens, etc. One had the virgin Mary. I thought it was well done and a fun activity to enjoy with my daughter.
