Phyllis's friendship with Roxanne is delightful, reminiscent of Anne and Diana's in Anne of Green Gables, although Roxanne is more sprightly the Diana. Phyllis herself is a delightful heroine, with a wonderful quaint voice - she's meant to sound quaint; it's not just an artifact of the fact that the book was written a hundred years ago, though doubtless that amplifies it. Passages like this:"I went in to unfasten Roxanne's dress and to get mine done likewise, then I could slip home through the garden, which is always so lovely with the moonlight making ghost flowers of Roxanne's ancestral blossoms."Ghost flowers: a lovely picture. Another quality I love in books of this time period is that sensitivity to nature, the lovely descriptions of flowers and trees and the strong sense of place. Modern teenage and children's books often seem to take place in Anywhere, USA, which is unfortunate. All places, no matter how dull and featureless they may feel, are specific.

I mostly love this author, but the book was written at a period when there was racial discrimination, which you will occasionally bump into in her work. Also, sometimes the scanning leaves some errors in the text.

Kindle book with a link to print By Alecia My kids love to color but as my daughter as gotten older (she is now 8), she has gotten bored with the typical childish coloring books. I got her this coloring book hoping it had more depth and she could explore different drawing and coloring techniques. As several have previously mentioned, this is a kindle book so in order to color you have to download the book. If you look at the book in kindle print format the pages are all messed up. But you can find the link to download in the book and it is easy to download. We went ahead and printed them all out so my daughter could see them all and decide what she just ahd to color immediately. She loved most of the designs but got a little confused because some of the lines overextended their connector and there were also random lines on some that she couldn't figure out a purpose for. She liked several of the designs and enjoyed coloring something with more detail. Overall the quality of drawing is good but some are just missing a level of quality so we skipped them. I will admit that I even enjoyed coloring with her and we had some fun times.I received this book for free in exchange for my honest opinion. This incentive did not affect my rating of this coloring book.

This is great for all ages. I have enjoyed coloring the pictures too. I fin it very therapeutic. I love that I can print these pages off as many times as I like, My daughter likes to color the same pages as I do, this makes that very easy and convenient.* I was given this product at a discounted rate for an honest review*

I have loved to color since I was a kid, but always thought the pictures were a bit mind numbing. But these are an actual challenge! The pictures actually take some work to color.I tested this at a discounted rate for an honest review.

Excerpt from The Sinless Sickless Deathless Life: God's Glory-Goal for AllMany have expressed the help received from reading the second chapter of this little volume, which appeared in print under the title of "The Deathless Life," as God's design for all.Repeated requests for more have called forth a number of articles, which have had as their common thought-thread, "The Sinless, Sickless, Deathless Life - God's Glory-Goal for All." All save the chapter referred to have been entirely recast and rewritten, to bring out more clearly the unfolding of the theme, as the crowning purpose of "God's Perfect Whole."Inasmuch as these papers were written for independent use, a number of repetitions will be found. These, however, are not enough perhaps to mar the message, the central theme of which, at this hour, is burning on the altars of men's hearts everywhere, like a holy fire.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The author, Frank N. Riale, was a Presbyterianminister with two doctoral degrees.I learned of this book's existence by reading "John G. Lake: the CompleteCollection of His Life Teachings" compiled by Roberts Liardon. The followingquote is from page 303 of the 1999 edition:"Frank N. Riale, a secretary of the Presbyterian Board of Education of New York, with sixty-three universities and colleges under his control and supervision, isthe author of a remarkable book, "The Sinless, Sickless, Deathless Life," in whichhe recounts in a chapter entitled, "How the Light [Came] and the Fire Fell," themarvelous story of his own conversion. He was a minister of the Gospel and agraduate of Harvard. He found his Lord at the hands of an Indian in [North]Dakota. He tells of the light of God that came to his soul in sanctifying powerthrough the ministry of a Salvation Army officer, Colonel Brengle. He related hismarvelous healing, when a diseased and dying wreck, through the reading of areligious tract on healing and his experience in seeing many healed of all manner ofdiseases by the power of God."Dr. Riale's use of the word "deathless" is not meant to imply that believers areto remain alive forever on this earth, but rather that their passage intothe presence of God is to be like that of Enoch, Elijah and the risen Christ Himself, instead of through physical death.Ridiculous? Please consider for yourself Christ's words to Martha just before Heraised Lazarus from the dead after Lazarus had been dead four days: "And whosoeverliveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?"(John 11:26KJV)Dr. Riale's book is perhaps the most challenging I have read apart from the Bible itself.Should you invest time and money in it? Perhaps the following questions will help youto decide:Have you ever looked up at the sky on a dark, clear night and known--just known--thatthe theory of evolution does not adequately explain what you are seeing? If so, read this book. Are you deeply dissatisfied with your Christian walk, knowing there must be moreto life in Christ than you have personally experienced in the church you attend? If so, read this book. Are you a born-again, Spirit-filled believer actively pressing in and laying hold?Have you read Kenyon? Wigglesworth? Lake? Does the life of McCheyne speak to you?Do you understand and appreciate Tozer's use of the phrase "children of the burning heart?"If so, you must read this book.May God greatly bless you in your search for Him.

A complete truth, sinless, sickless, deathless life By John or Kathy Mapp This author connected prophecy of the Promised Savior with fulfillment by the Savior. Revealing who we are to be NOW in the earth as He, our God andSavior, has given us everything we need for overcoming life NOW. We dont have to wait for a savior to come and restore order and righteousness to this dark and dying world. Raile agrees with the Word of God as I read it, our Savior has already come and how we can be about our Fathers business with overcoming power. We have what Jesus had to change the world. A book of Light to me. I found myself reading a few pages and having to stop because to read more was too much to take in. it was an OMG book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good academic information from a poor storyteller By Zeitgeist After reading through half this book, I had to look the author up. Sure enough, the guy was a Victorian-era Classics professor. And it shows in this tome; it's full of wonky information all technically accurate as possible. Yet the story and characters are so meh and, well, Victorian, as to make the book feel not that it takes place in Hellenestic Antiquity but the London of Arthur Conan Doyle with Corinthian columns and togas swapped in.The main character is a generic cookie-cutter hero named Cleander, a Greek who through improbable circumstances finds himself fighting the hated Romans on behalf of the doomed Carthaginians - who for some reason have no redeeming qualities - yet also kicking back good times and wine with the likes of...Scipio?Reason for this is the author's reliance and admiration of Polybius on display throughout this book; in both the parroting of facts and opinions expressed in Polybius's Histories: The Carthaginians are hapless and doomed. The Greeks are masters of the world who threw it all away. The Romans are a vicious brand of Greek imitators, but with old Greek virtues intact. And, of course, Scipio is the coolest most awesome guy of anyone everywhere. The tropes and brittle age of the prose make the events covered in the story seem somehow a few thousand more years out-of-date then they actually are. If you're hard-up for historical fiction from this period - and it is scant - I'd say give at least the sample a try.

The historical scenes are interwoven so carelessly that the reader looses interest in the book. . However the auther tried his best to put his efforts in his best way. It is a good effort to describe how the carthegians trid their best to protect thier kingdom from the Romans.

The Empty House and Other Ghost Stories, by Algernon Blackwood

About the Author Algernon Blackwood (1869-1951) was born into a well-to-do Kentish family. His parents, converts to a Calvinistic sect, led an austere life, ill-suited to their dreamy and sensitive son. During adolescence, he became fascinated by hypnotism and the supernatural and, on leaving university, studied Hindu philosophy and occultism. Later, he was to draw on these beliefs and experiences in his writing. Sent away to Canada at the age of twenty, his attempts at making a living were wholly unsuccessful and shortly after his return to England, he began to write. The Empty House and Other Ghost Stories, published in 1906, was followed by a series of psychic detective stories, featuring John Silence, 'physician extraordinary'. His reputation as one of the greatest exponents of supernatural fiction began to grow. Chiefly known for his ghost stories, Blackwood wrote in many different forms within the genre. His most personal works, however, are his 'mystical' novels, for example The Centaur, where he explores man's empathy with the forces of the universe. Blackwood also wrote children's fiction. A Prisoner in Fairyland was adapted into the play (later the musical), Starlight Express. Later in life, Blackwood turned to writing radio plays, and in 1947 he began a new career on BBC TV telling ghost stories. He received a knighthood in 1949.

31 of 33 people found the following review helpful. Setting The Record Straight By Irish I keep reading the same phrase on the reviews for Algernon Blackwood's, The Empty House And Other Ghost Stories - "This was free on my Kindle...". Yes, and what an extraordinary gift for the Kindle it is. Many of Algernon's works are Free for the Kindle, and aren't we blessed and ecstatic about that? I am - because Algernon Blackwood is the master of the ghost story and of things that go bump in the stormy night.Back in the day when these stories were written, you know, around the time of the Saber Tooth Tiger and T Rex, horror wasn't about blood, gore and shock value, the modern day ghost story, written then, was about nuance. A strange creak in the floor board, a cold wind sending chills down your spine, voices coming from an empty room. These stories are made of events that spawn imagination, and everyone knows imagination is more powerful than gore and violence and shock treatment. That's what makes these stories so delightfully good to read. And again, we are so lucky to have them, Free for the Kindle! The original works of Algernon Blackwood in book form can be very expensive.Take this morsel from The Empty House, where Jim Shorthouse and his elderly auntie plan to spend the night in a known haunted house - "for there is nothing more desolate in all the abodes of men than an unfurnished house dimly lit, silent, and forsaken, and yet tenanted by rumour with the memories of evil and violent histories." And if that can't get your imagination reeling, check your pulse.Yes, these are much more than mere campfire stories. These are stories to be read at night under the light of the candle, late, while the winds howl at the window. Who needs blood and guts when we have great subleties from brilliant writers such as Algernon Blackwood who spent much of his time writing spine tingling tales to scare and amuse. This book is filled with wonderful tales of hauntings, bizarre occurrences and the accounts of vagabond travelers taking refuge in strange boarding houses, farms and quaint out of the way villages. If one enjoys ghost stories, look no further. This book isn't about in your face violence and over the top gore, it's about fright like that creepy feeling you get when something crawls down your arm and sets your neck hairs on end. There are great stories in this collection (the first story collection published by Algernon): A Haunted Island, A Case Of Eavesdropping (my favorite), Keeping His Promise, With Intent To Steal, and many more.Let me put this in Algernon's own words: "Imaginative authors may write, moralists may preach, and scholars may criticise but they are dealing all the time in a coinage of which they know not the actual value."Algernon Blackwood - Free for the Kindle-Amen To That!!

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Great stories and writing style! By Amazon Customer This book contains ten delicious little ghost stories, which I thoroughly enjoyed reading.First is "The Empty House." Summoned by his Aunt Julia, Jim Shorthouse agrees to spend the night with her in a haunted house to provide the sane courage she feels she needs to be able to complete her quest. They arrive at the house in the dark of night and check it out from basement to upper level to be sure no one is inside. Fingers fumbling for matches, walking "arm in arm" while "holding the dripping candle and the stick," flickering candle light, drafts ... filtered moonlight, scenes draped in shadows, scurrying black beetles, agonized screams of terror, ... you get the picture! Aunt Julia was not disappointed! The author was able to bring me right into the scene, and I thoroughly enjoyed his writing style. As an example, he writes as part of his description of the dark, empty house: "And it was dreary enough in all conscience, for there is nothing more desolate in all the abodes of men than an unfurnished house dimly lit, silent, and forsaken, and yet tenanted by rumour with the memories of evil and violent histories." (pg 11)The second story, "A Haunted Island," takes place on a small, secluded island in a large Canadian lake in late September. The reader becomes an invisible witness to an act of terror and murder which takes place in the two-story cottage on the island. I got drawn into the story so much that it was hard not to hold my breath during the terror of the climax scene. All of my senses got involved! All of these stories drew me in and made me feel like I was right there in the room witnessing the events along with the characters. This would be a great book to read while wrapped up in a blanket and cozying up to a fire on a cold, rainy night, . . . late . . . when it's dark . . . and when everyone else is asleep! This book includes the following stories:The Empty HouseA Haunted IslandA Case of EavesdroppingKeeping His PromiseWith Intent to StealThe Wood of the DeadSmith: An Episode in a Lodging-HouseA Suspicious GiftThe Strange Adventures of a Private Secretary in New YorkSkeleton Lake: An Episode in CampThis may not be the best book I have ever read, but I really liked the stories and the author's writing style. The stories are works of fiction, but the author knows how to draw the reader into the story. I am definitely keeping this one on my Kindle!

From the Back Cover

Arthur Conan Doyle’s second Sherlock Holmes novel is both a detective story and an imperial romance. Ostensibly the story of Mary Morstan, a beautiful young woman enlisting the help of Holmes to find her vanished father and solve the mystery of her receipt of a perfect pearl on the same date each year, it gradually uncovers a tale of treachery and human greed. The action audaciously ranges from penal settlements on the Andaman Islands to the suburban comfort of South London, and from the opium-fuelled violence of Agra Fort during the Indian ‘Mutiny’ to the cocaine-induced contemplation of Holmes’ own Baker Street.

This Broadview Edition places Doyle’s tale in the cultural, political, and social contexts of late nineteenth-century colonialism and imperialism. The appendices provide a wealth of relevant extracts from hard-to-find sources, including official reports, memoirs, newspaper editorials, and anthropological studies.

Callahan I purchased this book in part on the strength of three 5-star reviews on this site. This is a very handsome hardcover volume at a surprisingly reasonable price. There are three classifications of stories in the book. First, stories primarily written by Adrian Conan Doyle, with some input from JD Carr. Second, two stories written almost entirely by Mr. Carr, possibly with some slight input from Doyle. Third, six stories written solely by Mr. Adrian Doyle.Since I have read a number of mysteries by Carr, and expected much, I was most disappointed to find his two stories the weakest in the book. In one instance, after reading the first page I was able to anticipate the entire plot. In the other case, I simply found the story flat, uninteresting, and narrowly derivative of similar stories in the original Holmes canon. To the contrary, some of the stories by Mr. Doyle cannot be praised enough. One that's typical, "The Adventure of Foulkes Rath," seems up to the work of Arthur Conan Doyle himself. All in all, Adrian Doyle admirably captures the style and brooding Gothic tone that so typifies many of the best stories in the original Holmes canon. Moreover, Adrian Doyle's stories have a kind of life and warmth that brings the Edwardian world alive for the reader.I would give the book five stars were it not for a few tales that seem off the pace, and decidedly inferior to the others. Alas-- and surprisingly-- these are from JD Carr's pen. Perhaps Carr tried too diligently to write an impeccably logical mystery, where nothing in the denoument was not well provided for in the early story. The effect, unfortunately, was to create a mechanical kind of plot, which made it all to easy for the reader to anticipate too accurately the entire unfolding of the story. So in this interesting and generally worthwhile book of tales, we might have the amateur outwriting the old master. All in all, a worthwhile purchase -- and handsome book with great bedtime reading at a very reasonable price.

Ryan Patrick Callahan's excellent review is right on the money, but I'm giving this little book four stars anyway just because, when it's good, it's _very_ good. Some of the stories contained herein -- based on Watson's occasional references to unrecorded (not "unsolved", as the current edition's subtitle incorrectly has it) cases -- surpass some of the elder Doyle's later works. Highly recommended, especially as an antidote to the surfeit of "pastiches" that can't seem to get any of the details right.Adrian Conan Doyle (with or without John Dickson Carr) tells a straight no-frills tale very much in the spirit of the Sherlockian canon; Holmes doesn't wind up getting married, Watson doesn't turn out to be the real Holmes, et cetera, et cetera. And there are no attempts to link Holmes to fabulous ripped-from-the-headlines figures like Dracula or Jack the Ripper -- these are perfectly ordinary cases of the kind in which Holmes himself was known to delight for their own sake owing to their touch of the _outre_ and the singular features they presented to the reasoner. Solid stuff despite the weaknesses of a few of the tales. If you want a couple of novel-length pastiches to go with it, I recommend Nicholas Meyer's first two: _The Seven Per Cent Solution_ and _The West End Horror_.

44 of 46 people found the following review helpful. Oh my gosh....AMAZING By A Customer What starts out as a small meeting with an unknown man turns into a murder mystery for Sherlock Holmes. I don't like to spoil endings, but let me say this: if you think the book is boring at first, don't stop reading: there is a TON of action towards the end.

There were times I felt like I was right there in the action. I wanted to see those parties and feel like I had gone along with the characters. The author does a great job with his descriptions. This isn’t a big book and reads rather quickly. It’s written in a snappy manner, so it’s easy to follow–for the most part. I had to reread a few parts, but nothing enough to deter me from continuing.Persephone did annoy me at times. The woman is pretty much perfect and I had a hard time relating to her. I wanted her to have some faults, but I understood why she wasn’t going to show them. The writing is snappy, like I said. Once I started the book, I read it in one sitting. If you want a glimpse into the beautiful life, then this might be the book for you.originally posted at long and short reviews

I love that he creates the perfect antagonist with a protagonist that can't get enough of being taken through the wringer. I would love to have a story in which all his antagonists meet. That would be explosive.

Mostly the information is basic and what one can deduce on their own sprinkled in with a different insight. I'm generously going to give four stars to this book

Don't bother unless you're completely new to running garage or yard sales By Amanda Shaffer This book was full of typographical errors and grammar mistakes. It was very difficult to read because of this, and it actually explained very little beyond common knowledge on how to run a yard sale. I am very glad that I had received this Kindle book for free, because had I paid for it, it would have been extremely disappointed. If you are completely new to running a yard sale, I suppose this book could potentially be helpful, but as someone who has hosted many yard sales, I was very disappointed.

Start with Rohmer's "The Green Eyes of Bâst" or "The Golden Scorpion" (free for Kindles). Although "The Yellow Claw" does have some interesting plot ideas, it does drag in spots; however, it makes up for it in the last third of the book. So, read this one (which has Rohmer's French detective, Gaston Max) later. Rohmer is most famous for creating the infamous character of Fu Manchu who later became even more famous in the black and white movies of the 30's. Fu Manchu was portrayed in various films by Boris Karloff in the 1930's. Several of the first Fu Manchu novels are also available for free on the Kindle or search out the actual books in used bookstores - they are worth the time to discover the great, intellectual (and stereotypical) evil genius who is Fu Manchu.

Beasts of Tarzan, by Edgar Rice Burroughs

Review After Tarzan s son is kidnapped, Tarzan and Jane are lured into a dangerous trap that separates them. In their desperate search for each other and for their son, they are drawn deep into the dangerous African jungle, where the evil schemes of Tarzan's enemies Rokoff and Paulvitch threaten them at every step. The ape-man must draw on all of his animal strength and all of his human intelligence (as well as the help of the beasts of the jungle) to try to reunite his family in safety. --From the Publisher

About the Author Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) is the creator of Tarzan, one of the most popular fictional characters of all time, and John Carter, hero of the Barsoom science fiction series. Burroughs was a prolific author, writing almost 70 books before his death in 1950, and was one of the first authors to popularize a character across multiple media, as he did with Tarzan s appearance in comic strips, movies, and merchandise. Residing in Hawaii at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbour in 1941, Burroughs was drawn into the Second World War and became one of the oldest war correspondents at the time. Edgar Rice Burroughs s popularity continues to be memorialized through the community of Tarzana, California, which is named after the ranch he owned in the area, and through the Burrough crater on Mars, which was named in his honour.

I just started to read about the adventures of Tarzan and can barely put the books down. Edgar Rice Burrougs is an amazing author. "The Beasts of Tarzan" is no exception. After Jane and their son Jack are kidnapped, Tarzan has to return to the jungle. Once more he has to rely on his wits and his above-human strength and physique to survive in the jungle. Making several new friend (not all of them human) he has to track down Jane, his son and the men who captured them."The Beasts of Tarzan" is an excellent adventure story and well worth the read.

The bad guys make the mistake of kidnapping Jane and son By Lawrance Bernabo "The Beasts of Tarzan" is the third novel about the Lord of the Jungle by Edgar Rice Burroughs. "The Beasts of Tarzan" finds the ape lord settled in civilized London as Lord Greystoke. But he becomes the target of his enemy, Nikolas Rokoff, and his henchman Alexis Paulvitch. The pair abducts Tarzan's Jane and their infant son Jack. Tarzan ends up stranded on a desert island, but with the help of Sheeta the panther and Akut the great ape he makes it back to the mainland. There he meets Mugambi, the giant chief of he Wagambi tribe, a character who goes on to become Tarzan's lifelong friend and ally (a welcome relief after the way virtually all of the natives were just a different sort of jungle animal for Tarzan to torment and kill). This odd group heads off together after the kidnappers into the deep jungle and when Tarzan finds them he lets his inner beast come up with creative ways of making them pay for the mistake of taking his wife and son. If you start reading the Tarzan novels in particular, or the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs in general, in the same order that they were written, then "The Beasts of Tarzan" is pretty much around the time that it becomes clear that the storyline is usually the same. Our hero is separated from the woman he loves and spends most of the book getting her back. You can throw a baby into the mix, change the impediments placed in the way, or alter the locale from Africa to Mars, Pellucidar or the Land That Time Forgot (far and away the best part of the recipe), but the basic plot remains the same. Burroughs was also getting tired of having to write about Tarzan, which he would prove in the next book in the series, "The Son of Tarzan," where baby Jack grows up to become Korak the Killer. Unfortunately there were more than twenty more Tarzan novels to come, which would rely more and more of a formulaic approach.

7 of 9 people found the following review helpful. ride or die By jib n. smith I like tarzan books. This one was great as well. Tarzan finally got to see some of his enemies die, which was satisfying for me. Also, I enjoyed the "lord of nature" aspect of the book. Anyone that can control a pack of apes and a panther is pretty cool. After I read this book, I just wanted to fight another animal to the death. After I killed it, I would stand above it with the blood running down my throat and scream like tarzan does. I recommend this book for any father who is worried his son might grow up to be weak. Once again, great book.
