Nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and a finalist in the USA Best Book Awards in the Historical Fiction category, Devil Knows: A Tale of Murder and Madness in America’s First Century is a mystery-in-the-archives thriller written with great charm and cinematic flair.

In the dead of night at the height of the 1692 Salem mania, a dying smallpox victim collapses in prison while visiting a witch condemned to hang – Mary Bradbury, the great ancestor of famed writer Ray Bradbury.

A delirious old man, Hopestill Foster, is brought before the Rev. Cotton Mather, the infamous witch-hunter and the most powerful man in ancient Boston, for a very private interrogation. Mather is desperate for answers about Foster’s past because he knows it ties into his own.

Better had he not asked.

Over the course of the prisoner telling his story to the cleric, 60 years of a terrible history unfolds, at the heart of which is a monstrous secret about Mather’s family that must not be allowed to escape the room where Foster is being held.

Hopestill Foster, the novel's protagonist, a man inured to a lifetime of suffering and one to whom a great wrong was done by him and to him in his youth, ultimately has to decide. Pass on, leaving the wreckage of his life behind, or accept a final deadly mission to make things right.

For Hopestill Foster, there is only one choice.

David Joseph Kolb’s Devil Knows: A Tale of Murder and Madness in America’s First Century, a thrilling historical adventure in the grand storytelling tradition of Northwest Passage and Drums Along the Mohawk, breaks new literary ground about the very first American century - a nearly forgotten post-Pilgrim past when intolerance, misogyny and ignorance culminated in horrifying outrages against ordinary people.

Yet it rediscovers, too, that hope was never lost, and that heroes were always among us.

Devil Knows: A Tale of Murder and Madness in America's First Century, by David Joseph Kolb

Review "With relentless research, fascinating characters and a great storyteller's imagination, David Kolb unravels a lingering mystery from the historical horror known as the Salem witch trials: How did Mary Bradbury become Salem's only convicted "witch" to escape execution? Like other great historical fiction, Kolb's narrative picks up where facts leave off and reveals disturbing, yet valuable, truths." - Clarence Page, Pulitzer Prize-winning syndicated columnist for the Chicago Tribune "Award-winning journalist David Kolb has created an interwoven tale of the earliest days of American history. Religious differences and philosophies, witches, battles and conspiracies against the Native American people all lead to an intriguing tale. In this well-researched story he shows how the earliest inhabitants of New England fought, conspired, loved and lived in the New World." - John McGarry, CEO, Lakeshore (MI) Museum Center

Not being much of a history buff I was surprised and delighted to find myself getting caught up in the period, fascinated by the difficult life of our early American ancestors. Hopestill Foster, through whose eyes much of the story is told, was a delightful combination of simplicity and courage, and I truly cared what happened to him. This is the first time I can remember enjoying a story so much while at the same time coming away from a book feeling like I'd genuinely learned something. Part mystery, part history, totally enthralling!

By cp7622 The author has thoroughly researched an early American period and provided insight into a dark chapter in the history of our country, with enough fiction mixed into keep the story intriguing. Plenty of detail and well developed characters keep the history from being dry, and it is fascinating to learn in the afterward how much fact and how little fiction is contained in the story. I may read it again to apply what I learned later in to book to the earlier chapters to increase my understanding. Great presentation that I highly recommend.

By Amazon Customer David Kolb has written a captivating book about this historical time period. He very skillfully introduces us to an engaging character whose life we travel through as the threads of this intricately woven story unravels. The layers of history that we learn about along the way on this suspenseful journey are both surprising and appalling. I could not put this book down until the last page was turned!

Murder in an ethnic London neighborhood By Patto This novel, which appeared in 1921, has a fascinating setting - South Paddington, home to working people and shopkeepers of various cultures and languages. Struggling writers also like the neighborhood for its cheap lodgings and eating places. The Jewish community dominates the novel. But while contemporary authors were indulging in scornful Jewish stereotypes and Jewish villains, Fletcher gives us warm-hearted, personable, attractive Jewish characters. (His Asian characters, by contrast, are stereotypes.)The story opens with the murder of an old Jewish pawnbroker. Our Scottish hero, Andrew Lauriston, a penniless aspiring writer, has the misfortune of finding the body, and is accused of killing and robbing the old man. The plot evolves around the efforts of his friends and supporters to find the real murderer.Among Lauriston's Jewish friends are Melchor (Melky) Rubinstein and Zillah Wildrose. Melky is a thoroughly engaging young man, a small-time entrepreneur who buys and sells jewelry in the neighborhood, uneducated but smart and deeply loyal to his friends. Zillah is granddaughter to the murdered man - pretty, college educated and an excellent businesswoman. She provides a romantic interest. In fact, romance is in the air throughout this adventure. Several characters find love in the process of finding the murderer. We know from the title that there's a fabulous diamond involved in the mystery. But it's personalities not diamonds that make this book so much fun. And plot twists, of course.J. S. Fletcher is one of my favorite Golden Age mystery writers. I can recommend most of his books. I especially like the Resurrected Press editions, which are well produced and have nice little introductions. He did write a few less wonderful books, but the Resurrected Press editions are all well worth reading.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. An interesting read from J. S. Fletcher By Fantasyman I rate this one four stars, mostly due to exceptional character development. Not sure how to describe this book, there is mystery, murder, and, lots of carefully drawn characters. There isn't a single protagonist driving this story, instead, the focus falls upon one character after another as they work to unravel the mystery. I'd say there is a surprise ending, but, to me, the story has no real denouement, it just sort of runs out of angles and ends. Not a bad read though, along the way it takes some incredible twists and turns, with surprises at every turn, and more characters than you can keep track of. And, as each character in turn seems to drive the story for a while, you see characters that were prominent early on fade to mere mention towards the end. Much of the mystery, and a lot of the plot, never seem to be completely resolved, you never know who really done it. Rather strange for a mystery tale not to have a comprehensive wrap at the end, a summation of events with the guilty party found and justice dealt,. You never really find out who done it. You're left with a pretty good idea of who it is, but, not really wrapped up in a basket as you normally expect from a mystery novel. There is a wrap up of sorts, but, for the most part this story just winds down and comes to an end.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Another good read, with caveats By Amazon Customer Set in London in the early 1900's, a good mystery with likable characters. A caution however, there is stereotyping of multiple ethnic groups.

It was a day of great excitement, and Audrey Wynford stood by her schoolroom window and looked out. She was a tall girl of sixteen, with her hair hanging in a long, fair plait down her back. She stood with her hands folded behind her and an expectant expression on her face. Up the avenue a stream of people were coming. Some came in cabs, some on bicycles; some walked. They all turned in the direction of the front entrance, and Audrey heard their voices rising and falling as they entered the house, walked down the hall, and disappeared into some region at the other end.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. An old fashioned english story By J. Destefano "A Very Naughty Girl" is written in the moralistic style of the early nineteen hundreds. The Wynfords of Wyndford Castle are forced to welcome a sixteen year old Evelyn into their home. She is the niece of Squire Wynford and the heiress of the Wynford estate. Evelyn was not raised with the good breeding of Squire Wynford's own daughter Audrey and is therefore a somewhat unpleasant addition to the household. The story also features the more honorable Sylvia Leason and her struggles living with her miser father. As the two stories intersect, Evelyn shows herself to be a willful and dishonest girl whose deeds cause much strife and hardship while Sylvia struggles to survive. I enjoyed the story even with its overuse of exposition and the unrealistic perfection of some of its characters' traits. The ending is happy and I enjoyed the English landscape.

I could totally relate to much of this story either directly or in theory. The journey in finding yourself in the crazy unknown is pretty darned amazing. This story is inspiring and shows us that there is a silver lining somewhere. Alex Paul did a great job with this book.

A Book for Anyone Who Feels Lost in the Wilderness By Kieran Hair Nick Lawson is an Environmental Assessment Agency project manager, who works to ensure that new projects will not cause harm to the natural world. But when the story starts, there is nothing natural about Nick’s surroundings. He is being celebrated, and is expected to party with his colleagues. In the back of his mind, however, he is distracted by the loss of a romance and his concerns for a comatose little sister. Despite his sorrows, he gets through the party by faking his happiness and telling people what they want to hear. But his boss can see through the act, and he offers to let Nick stay in his vacation home at Grouse Lake, surrounded by nature and cut off from all internet or phone service.Well, Nick does wind up surrounded by nature with no phone or internet, but it isn’t quite the escape he had planned. Nick has the pilot take a detour on his way to the cabin, and he soon finds himself alone in the woods after a terrible plane crash. Mostly alone, anyway. He is frequently encountered by apparitions of the people who have affected his life the most, and a great deal of the book is spent in flashbacks to moments that Nick considers important.“The Moss King” is more than a story of survival. It is a story about a man who must decide that he still has an actual reason to survive when it appears that he has lost everything important to him. The climax of the book is fascinating, beginning with a series of realistic survival missions and ending with three hallucinatory sequences which help Nick decide whether he wants to live or die. On the edge of insanity, Nick faces the ultimate fight-or-flight dilemma, unsure whether he will fight for a life worth living or flee from life altogether. To anyone who has ever felt a bit lost, a bit downtrodden, and maybe even a bit unstable, this is the story for you. The setting is gorgeous, the plot structure is unique, and the moral lessons of are deeply inspirational. “The Moss King” is not a book that provides you with answers for life; it is a book that inspires you to search for them yourself.

An Essential Reminder By Daniel I thoroughly enjoyed the writing style of Alex Paul in this journey of a troubled man through the trees and streets, and within his mind. I could relate to many aspects of the characters, as I feel they are beautifully portrayed examples of human nature. There are great settings and minute details that bring to the reader's attention the current relationship between humans and the Earth and it's inhabitants, as well as the personal relationship we have with ourselves."The Moss King" can serve as a necessary wake up call, an inspiration to embrace the hardships inside and out, and delight the reader with a heart breaking and heart building adventure.A novel I will gladly share.

The Golden Snare, by James Oliver Curwood is a tale of high adventure in the Canadian wilderness in the early 1900s. When Sergeant Phillip Raine of the Northwest Mounted Police finds the golden snare he embarks on a dangerous journey to discover its origins with surprising results. From dog sled, to snow shoes, across barrens and through blizzards, he risks his life to track down Bram Johnson and learn the fate of the owner of the golden snare across the vast Northern wilderness of upper Canada to near the Arctic. When this book was written, the reading public was very interested in Canadian and Alaskan wilderness stories as the great gold rush has been on there for sometime and Jack London’s stories were being read about that drama. Curwood writes of very interesting characters in this same Northern wilderness, but his stories tell more about natives of the land than the interlopers looking for gold. In The Golden Snare he gives us Bram, almost an animal, but with a heart underneath that gives all to protect those he loves though misunderstood and hunted ruthlessly by the Royal Northwest Canadian Mounties.

My grandmother had most of his books in her library, and when I was a youth, 50 or more years ago, I devoured them one by one. Some of them I read more than once. This one was just as good this time around as it was 50 plus years ago. If you love a good story, I think you'll like this one. I recommend it.

The wellsprings of desire and the impediments to love come brilliantly into focus in Evelyn Waugh's masterpiece - a novel that immerses us in the glittering and seductive world of English aristocracy in the waning days of the empire.

Through the story of Charles Ryder's entanglement with the Flytes, a great Catholic family, Evelyn Waugh charts the passing of the privileged world he knew in his own youth and vividly recalls the sensuous pleasures denied him by wartime austerities.

At once romantic, sensuous, comic, and somber, Brideshead Revisited transcends Waugh's early satiric explorations and reveals him to be an elegiac, lyrical novelist of the utmost feeling and lucidity.

Taylor Like most great novels, BRIDESHEAD REVISITED is about a great many things--not the least of which is the decline of English aristocracy. But at center, Evelyn Waugh's greatest novel (and one of his few non-satirical works) is about religious faith, and how that faith continues to operate in the lives of even those who seem to reject it, and how that faith supports even those who falter badly in it.The story is complex. It is told in the first person by narrator Charles Ryder, who develops a close and possibly homoerotic relationship with artistocrat Sebastian Flyte while the two are students at Oxford. Seduced by the glamor of Flyte's way of life and the beauty of his ancestrial home at Brideshead, Ryder becomes deeply involved with Flyte's family as well--a Roman Catholic family in which the various members either use their religion to manipulate others or actively rebel against it. With the passage of time, Sebastian's drinking expands into alcholism--which appears to be fueled by his guilt at rejecting the church, a rejection which may be based on his own uncertain sexuality. Ryder consequently transfers his affections to Sebastian's sister Julia--but again religion influences their relationship: Julia has made an unfortunate marriage, and although she is willing to engage in an affair with Ryder, she may not be willing to divorce her husband, an act that will cast her completely outside the bounds of her faith. The characters involved in the story are often extremely charming, but they are not necessarily admirable, and the passage of time in the novel nibbles away at their charm in such a way as to expose their flaws; even the narrator, Charles Ryder, gradually emerges as a somewhat second-rate person of dubious integrity. Even so, there remains a strange element of hope in the novel, a sense of God's grace and mercy even in the face of deliberate affront. Poetically written with considerable beauty and a sense of lost innocence that haunts the reader, BRIDESHEAD REVISITED is a too-often misinterpreted and misunderstood book that demands a thoughtful reading to get down into the marrow of its thematic bones. Powerful, beautiful, memorable--a book to read and enjoy again and again. Strongly recommended.GFT, Amazon Reviewer

It would normally take me about three days with pretty substantial reading time during those days. But there was just something about it, and I made time and read this one pretty much straight through. It is easily one of the most wonderful novels I have ever read. There is so much to like about it. There is sheer joy in reading Waugh's prose as small nuggets of humor and beauty are uncovered throughout. The characters are pretty over-the-top (done on purpose) which makes them entertaining, but the depth of the characters is the truly striking thing. It's usually between the lines, but these characters are changing dramatically throughout, and for the better. I think the theological discussion running throughout the novel is what really makes it rise to true greatness. Waugh's making a compelling argument for a moral universe, and he is revealing what God's grace may look like working in people's lives.Brideshead Revisited is true masterpiece that really cannot be missed by any lover of literature or by any person looking for some meaning out there. It's a joy in every sense of the word. This is one book I'm going to come back to.

73 of 75 people found the following review helpful. Classic--Waugh's masterpiece By Lady Wimsey Short & sweet because other reviewers have provided wonderful descriptions already: reading such a book as this is an education in itself.Brideshead is a classic novel by a genuine master of English prose. Well-worth reading not once, but many times, to understand the depth of the story itself as well as appreciate Waugh's obvious mastery of language. Also highly recommended is Mortimer's adaptation of the book as a mini-series starring Laurence Olivier, John Gielgud, Anthony Andrews and Jeremy Irons. It is the definitive Brideshead on film, from the opening lines spoken by Jeremy Irons (as usual, his speaking voice is flawless) to the final scene of Charles in Brideshead chapel during WWII where Charles prays "an ancient prayer, newly learned."(There are some reviewers who've given it a low rating based on their dislike of the underlying theme of the book. Evelyn Waugh was a convert to Catholicism and his novel revolves around the characters' wandering away but ultimately back again, to faith: for the Flyte family, it is a return to their heritage (two of the most moving scenes are Lord Marchmain's death-bed conversion and Julia's painful but utterly noble decision), and for Charles Ryder (not "Simon" as a one-star critic mistakenly called him! Have you read the book, sir?), it is a newly found conviction. Hence, Book III's title "A Twitch upon the Thread" (quoting Chesterton), the thread referring to the fine, but strong pull of the Catholic faith over these individuals. If this is the book's only 'flaw', as some assert it to be, perhaps this line from a Capra film will help: for those who believe, no explanation is necessary; for those who do not, no explanation is possible. Agnostic, atheist or believer, the workings of grace is a mysterious thing.)

Although many might not recognize the name P.G. Wodehouse, they have inevitably come across his work. Wodehouse was a British humorist who wrote novels, short stories, journalism pieces, and other stuff, becoming extremely popular over a 70 year career. Today he is best known for the Jeeves and Blandings Castle novels and short stories, but he was also a playwright and lyricist who was part author and writer of 15 plays and 250 lyrics. Both the name "Jeeves" and the character of Jeeves have become a common part of the English lexicon, meaning a valet or chauffeur. It is even the inspiration behind the popular search engine Ask Jeeves.

Not George Washington: An Autobiographical Novel, by P.G. Wodehouse

From Library Journal First published in England in 1907, Not George Washington never appeared here in any form until now. And with good reason. It's a dreadful novel, beginning with its odd title. Told through several narrative voices, it's a dreary tale of a young Londoner struggling to make his fortune as a writer so he can marry his true love. Anyone reading this clunker will find it hard to believe it was coauthored by the creator of such brilliant characters as Emsworth, Psmith, and Wooster. Its chief interest lies in its use of some of Wodehouse's own early publishing experiences. Frederick Davidson's reading is a heroic effort to pump life into the book, but the patient was already dead on its belated arrival in America. Recommended only to libraries whose patrons insist (and loudly) on listening to everything Wodehouse ever wrote (cf., Cocktail Time, Audio Reviews, LJ 4/15/97, or Psmith in the City, Audio Reviews, LJ 1/98).?R. Kent Rasmussen, Thousand Oaks, CACopyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review "Mr Wodehouse's idyllic world can never stale. He will continue to release future generations from captivity that may be more irksome than our own. He has made a world for us to live in and delight in." -- Evelyn Waugh BBC Broadcast

About the Author Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (P. G. Wodehouse) was an English humorist and writer best known for his Jeeves and Blandings Castle novels. Educated at boarding schools, Wodehouse turned to writing at a young age, demonstrating great skill at humorous sketches and musical lyrics. He continued to write part-time while pursuing, at the behest of his father, a career in banking, and successfully contributed numerous pieces to Punch, Vanity Fair, and The Daily Express, among other publications. In addition to his literary work, Wodehouse was incorporated into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in recognition of his collaboration with Cole Porter on Anything Goes, his lyrics to the song Bill from Show Boat, and his work on the musicals Rosalie and The Three Musketeers.

While interned along with other British citizens in Germany during the Second World War, Wodehouse made a series of radio broadcasts for which he was accused of being a collaborator; and, although later cleared of the charges, he never returned to England. His work has influenced many other writers including Evelyn Waugh, Rudyard Kipling, J. K. Rowling, and John Le Carr?. P. G. Wodehouse died in 1975 at the age of 93.

They're full of clever wordplay, convoluted plots, and and lovable characters. Not George Washington doesn't have any of that. I only laughed once while reading the thing, and that was in the next-to-last chapter. The wordplay is not even remotely clever, in fact it's almost non-existent. The plot is slightly convoluted, but nowhere up to the usual Wodehouse standards. Quite frankly, I almost hated the main character, James Cloyster, because he's boring and a scoundrel. Trying to marry one woman when you're engaged to another is not the sort of behavior one expects from a Wodehousian hero. This really isn't a good book at all. At best it's painfully mediocre. I can only recommend it to Wodehouse enthusiasts who want to collect copies of all of his works. Everyone else should steer clear. I can only give "Not George Washington" 3 stars, and that's being generous.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Art Imitates Life By Dave_42 Though one tends to think of his school stories when thinking of early Wodehouse, he did on several occasions stretch himself, and often with much better results than what he achieved with the school stories. "Not George Washington" is a case in point. Billed as an autobiographical novel, this story is very humorous and one of his better early efforts, along with "Love Among the Chickens" and "William Tell Told Again". Published originally on October 18th, 1907 and co-written with Herbert Westbrook, Wodehouse uses his early career and some of his and Westbrook's doings as the framework for the story. The story is cleverly written, as it moves from one narrator to the next. The narrative starts as from Miss Margaret Goodwin, a woman who becomes engaged to James Orlebar Cloyster (Wodehouse). They fall in love and are engaged to be married, but first he must succeed as a writer, and so he heads off to London and they are parted. Her narrative jumps ahead a few years as she is still waiting, but has written a play which she sends to her husband so that he can succeed. In London, the narrative shifts to Cloyster and returns to the time of his initial arrival and attempts to become a writer. Cloyster soon becomes distracted by other aspects of life, and the story artfully weaves its way through his career events, his personal relationships, and the waning of his feelings for Miss Goodwin. Cloyster ends up hiding his success from Miss Goodwin by publishing his works through three different men.The narrative next shifts to Sidney Price. Price is one of Cloyster's fronts who becomes aware that he is not the only one who is allowing Cloyster to publish using his name. He and the others decide they want a higher rate and confront Cloyster, but Cloyster has decided to marry another woman (the cousin of a friend) and cancels his arrangement with all three of the men. Price then sees works still being published under the other two men's names, and learns that they have decided that they can write as well as Cloyster, so Price also begins to write and publish under his own name. The narrative then shifts to Julian Eversleigh (Westbrook) - the friend of Cloyster who is the cousin of Cloyster's new fiancé - and then back to Cloyster as the story twists and turns at the end in a marvelous display of Wodehouse at his best. The overall story is fairly strong, though not quite at the level of the second version of "Love Among the Chickens", it is still one of the best of Wodehouse's early works.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Rather Unusual Wodehouse Novel By Phyllis Hirshleifer This isn't my favorite novel by P. G. Wodehouse, but it's quite interesting. It seems like an early experiment, written before he developed his special kind of comedy. He speaks in several voices and they aren't all likeable, but the skill is already evident.

This little book is intended as a memorial to the women who came in The Mayflower, and their comrades who came later in The Ann and The Fortune, who maintained the high standards of home life in early Plymouth Colony. There is no attempt to make a genealogical study of any family. The effort is to reveal glimpses of the communal life during 1621-1623. This is supplemented by a few silhouettes of individual matrons and maidens to whose influence we may trace increased resources in domestic life and education. One must regret the lack of proof regarding many facts, about which are conflicting statements, both of the general conditions and the individual men and women. In some instances, both points of view have been given here; at other times, the more probable surmises have been mentioned. The author feels deep gratitude, and would here express it, to the librarians of the Massachusetts Historical Society, the New England Genealogic-Historical Register, the American Antiquarian Society, the Register of Deeds, Pilgrim Hall, and the Russell Library of Plymouth, private and public libraries of Duxbury and Marshfield, and to Mr. Arthur Lord and all other individuals who have assisted in this research. The publications of the Society of Mayflower Descendants, and the remarkable researches of its editor, Mr. George E. Bowman, call for special appreciation.

The Mayflower Women By Bloomsbury This book was somewhat amateurish in its presentation, but very interesting.A good description of the long sea voyage, with all the hardships faced by the passengers & crew. It's more of a collection of known facts rather than a narrative, but a very good starting point for those interested in the topic. More background could have been given, after all the women boarded the ship fully grown, each with their own personal histories.Well worth reading.

He may seem controlling to some--well, everyone--but he loves his family with his entire being and will stop at nothing to protect them. Ian decides to live life his own way, not full of lies like his father did, even if that means he never puts his heart out there for a woman. But then he spots curvy Riley Taylor on the arm of his half-brother Alex and he knows he's in trouble.'Something about this woman called to his deepest protective instincts. For all her bravado and independence, there was an innocence inside her that provided a counterbalance to his more jaded personality.'Riley Taylor promised herself she would steer clear of pushy, controlling men after what she dealt with growing up. Why, then, when she meets Ian Dare, half-brother of her best friend Alex, does she find herself falling for his dominance? Especially in the bedroom. He breaks nearly every boundary Riley has set for herself yet somehow she finds herself changing for Ian and, more surprisingly, craving the bond growing between them.'She'd sworn she'd never be that woman, the one who needed a man so desperately she'd accept anything and everything he dished out.'Dare to Love is the first book in a new hot and steamy contemporary romance series by Carly Phillips, which she self-published. After reading about Ian and Riley, I think her fans will be uber excited with the result!"I expect you to give yourself over to me completely in bed. To do as I say without hesitation or question." He raised her hand and pressed a hot, open-mouthed kiss to her palm. "I promise you won't be disappointed."I fell instantly for the plotline and our protagonists as well. To me, this was sexy and intense without being considered smutty or too over the top. It definitely had erotic moments centering on dominance, but still wasn't quite BDSM. (Although there may be a really hot scene with a silk tie...just sayin') Instead, there was a lot of emotion behind the passion they shared. The chemistry between Riley and Ian was absolutely combustible. I thought they had such an interesting dynamic with Ian's dominant ways and Riley herself being Miss Independent. Obviously there were times where they clashed, but when it worked, it worked oh so well! *fans face*Alex was a point of contention between the two of them also. Ian didn't want to have anything to do with him but was willing to try thanks to Riley. And here's a heads up: look for Alex's story next in Dare to Desire due out in Spring 2014. I really enjoyed the secondary characters, especially Ian's siblings and his mom. The females in his family sure know about his control issues and they make sure to keep him in line. So funny--it felt like a real family dynamic.I highly recommend Dare to Love if you like your romances HOT but with a lot of personal and emotional growth. Carly Phillips has a fabulous start to her new series here!

But not only is Dare to Love passionate and deliciously angsty, it is also a really powerful story about two people who are bound by the past, and find the strength -together- to move forward. To be free of everything that has held them back.Dare to Love is the story of Riley Taylor and Ian Dare. Riley's best friend is Ian's estranged half-brother, Alex, and when the two meet, it is an instant connection they share. I'm not talking insta-love, I'm saying insta-passion, the very kind that strikes you from across the room, and will not let go. Their initial obstacle is Alex, who's only known Ian to be a womanizer, and does not want that for his best friend. In order to win Riley over, Ian and Alex must make nice. Due to some very heavy issues, this will not be easy. These are the very issues that drive Ian's need for control, another obstacle for the couple. Due to her own past, Riley is not having a man who wants to dominate her every move, though in the bedroom is a whole other ballgame. So here we have two passionate and headstrong people who want to be together, but must work through their issues, let down their boundaries, and see if they can make a go of being a couple. Together. Strong. It has been quite a while since I've read a Carly Phillips book, and I have to say, it has been way too long. Phillips is maybe the first contemporary romance author I read as an adult (Chandler Brothers!) , and I was immediately reminded of why I loved them so much. Dare to Love had such a nice, fast pace and I found myself breezing through the story in a matter of a couple hours. Not only did I get a steamy and fun story, but a thoughtful one as well. Ian and Riley were not only inherently likable characters, but they equally experienced tremendous character growth, the kind of epiphanies and revelations that made me want to cheer Phillips.Dare to Love is the first in the Dare to Love series. With the amount of Dare siblings and the dynamic personalities they all seem to have, this should be only the beginning in a great series. It seems that next up will be Alex Dare, and guys, I cannot wait to read his book. Carly Phillips has hooked me again.Favorite Quotes:"I've dreamed about the way you might taste. Are you sweet, Riley?" he asked, his voice gruff and sexy. Please let me make you feel good. Her words had shredded his emotions, stripping him bare. She'd gotten into his head in a way no woman ever had. Because she cared. Not because he was wealthy and could give her gifts in return, not because she desired something from him, but because she wanted just him. Learning to accept things from others, from small items and gifts to larger, more significant offers, like a new job and a place to live, she was slowly bending. Giving up her hard-won and fought-for independence. And the scariest of all, coming to count on having Ian in her life. But she was also realizing that relying on others didn't make her weak...it made her human.

By Jane This feels like: read a hundred romance novels, pull out bunches of good things, and arrange them into this book. I did not find interesting or intriguing characters. I wanted something different, special, or humorous, but I didn’t find it. But, I think many romance readers are less picky than I and will be happy reading it.The guy is the rich dominating corporate guy who sees her, has to have her, gives her a great job, and buys her great things to wear. It’s kind of wishful thinking for females.I was frustrated with the heroine’s STUPIDITY causing the big breakup. There were seven sex scenes, some several pages long. I skimmed some of them. I was not emotionally pulled in. The author was using grandiose phrases, which meant the characters were having great sex, but I wasn’t. I did not feel anything. Some of the phrases were: he came harder than ever before, the best orgasm of her life, the biggest tidal wave of heat and sensation he’d ever experienced.Immediately after reading this book, I read Valiant by L Dohnner. The first sex scene in that book was sooo hot, I was fanning my face going “whew.” It was really well done. I only mention it as a comparison, because I felt nothing like that in Dare to Love.DATA:Narrative mode: 3rd person. Kindle count length: 2,801, 257 pages. Swearing language: strong words used, but not often. Sexual language: strong. Number of sex scenes: 7. Setting: current day mostly Florida. Copyright: 2013. Genre: contemporary romance, football.

Thirty thousand years ago, ice was storming the planet. Among the species forced out of the trees and onto the steppes by the advancing cold was modern man, who was both predator and prey. No stranger to the experiences that make us human-a mother's love and a father's betrayal, tribal war and increasing famine, political intrigue and forbidden love, joy and hope and devastating loss-our ancestors competed for scant resources in a brutal landscape. Mankind stood on the cold brink of extinction, but they had a unique advantage over other species, a new technology: domesticated wolves. Only a set of extraordinary circumstances could have transformed one of these fierce creatures into a hunting companion, a bodyguard, a soldier, and a friend. W. Bruce Cameron's The Dog Master is an evocative glimpse of prehistory, an emotional coming of age saga, a thrilling tale of survival against all odds, and the exciting, imaginative story of the first dog.

After I read A Dog's Purpose, which I know was on the NY Times Bestseller List for over a year, I thought I'd never read a book that great again. I was wrong. The Dog Master had me hooked from the first page, and I didn't come up for air until I'd finished it! As a dog lover I often wondered about the origins of the wonderful and inexplicable relationship between human and dog, and was so pleased to find a book that ponders the same question. Though I was lucky enough to win an advanced copy in a giveaway, I'm planning on ordering multiple copies to give as gifts to other dog lovers and readers.Cameron does an amazing job of illustrating such a unique time in history, as well as making his characters and story lines so identifiable. This novel had everything I wanted from exciting battles to tales of forbidden love, and of course, the heartwarming story of the first domesticated wolf. The Dog Master is the story of two paleolithic tribes struggling for survival and their spiritual connection with a pack of wolves that bare the special "hand-print" marking. Not only are they faced with the dangers of hunger, lurking and ferocious wildlife, other vicious tribes of humans, but also the struggle for power amongst their own tribe members.A Dog's Purpose and A Dog's Journey have long been my favorites books because of Cameron's distinct ability to write from the perspective of a dog, and thankfully there is more of the same in this book. In fact, the unique circumstances by which dog (or in this case, wolf) and human come together are truly astounding.I hate that it had to end, but I was encouraged by what I saw as a potential segue to a sequel. Don't hesitate to get a copy of this book and another as a gift! I would have given it 10 stars if I could!

I loved A Dog's Purpose, and have read all of W. Bruce Cameron's books. My taste in reading is somewhat eclectic. My curiosity was peaked from the first chapter. I was thrust into the story which drove me into a reading frenzy. I gulped this book down. I took chunks of it, and devoured them, yearning for more. My eyes could not keep up with my brain and hearts demands, and I was forced to put the book down to get some rest. I was realizing that this book was reminiscent of two of my favorite books, A Dog's Purpose, and Clan Of The Cave Bears. I was hooked. Refreshed, I again, dove in and when finished I licked my fingers clean. It was succulent. The characters evolve, and hold you fast to them. The round about way the story weaves between them, you gasp when the hidden becomes obvious. With the rise of the plot, the tissues came out, just as a great book demands of you. This might be W. Bruce Cameron’s finest work. If you loved A Dog’s Purpose, you will feel as if you are cheating on it, when your new love is now The Dog Master.

If you have ever wondered how or why the clansmen of the Pleistocene forged a relationship with the wolf that humankind can't seem to live without, this is the book for you! Cameron takes us on a journey into the imagined lives of the early clans that made up humankind. Our shared history comes down to their intergroup and intragroup dilemmas and often just luck. And it may just be our luck that their bond with what we now know as dogs began! Loved it!
