Émile Zola is one of the greatest writers of the 19th century, and one of France’s best known citizens. In his life, Zola was the most important exemplar of the literary school of naturalism and a major figure in the political liberalization of France. Around the end of his life, Zola was instrumental in helping secure the exoneration of the falsely accused and convicted army officer Alfred Dreyfus, a victim of anti-Semitism. The Dreyfus Affair was encapsulated in the renowned newspaper headline J'Accuse.More than half of Zola's novels were part of this set of 20 collectively known as Les Rougon-Macquart. Unlike Honore de Balzac, who compiled his works into La Comedie Humaine midway through, Zola mapped out a complete layout of his series. Set in France's Second Empire, the series traces the "environmental" influences of violence, alcohol and prostitution which became more prevalent during the second wave of the Industrial Revolution. The series examines two branches of a family: the respectable Rougons and the disreputable Macquarts for five generations. Zola explained, "I want to portray, at the outset of a century of liberty and truth, a family that cannot restrain itself in its rush to possess all the good things that progress is making available and is derailed by its own momentum, the fatal convulsions that accompany the birth of a new world."

Language Notes Text: English (translation) Original Language: French

About the Author ?mile Zola was a French writer who is recognized as an exemplar of literary naturalism and for his contributions to the development of theatrical naturalism. Zola s best-known literary works include the twenty-volume Les Rougon-Macquart, an epic work that examined the influences of violence, alcohol and prostitution on French society through the experiences of two families, the Rougons and the Macquarts. Other remarkable works by Zola include Contes ? Ninon, Les Myst?res de Marseille, and Th?r?se Raquin.

In addition to his literary contributions, Zola played a key role in the Dreyfus Affair of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. His newspaper article J Accuse accused the highest levels of the French military and government of obstruction of justice and anti-semitism, for which he was convicted of libel in 1898. After a brief period of exile in England, Zola returned to France where he died in 1902. ?mile Zola is buried in the Panth?on alongside other esteemed literary figures Victor Hugo and Alexandre Dumas.

It looks like there is no other translation than this one by Ernest Vizetelly from over 100 years ago (correct me if I am wrong). Therefore, when another reviewer below writes "but there are several mistakes in translation" and "there is an entire section in which the translator removed a description of Zola's, because he thinks the English audience wouldn't be interested", then this is certainly correct, but as long as nobody translates this book again, we will have to live with this. And the reader should not forget that E. Vizetelly was Zola's "official" translator, his translations were the only ones authorized by Zola, they knew each other personally very well and helped each other during hard times, and some of the old-worldish British 19th century linguistic charme that Vizetelly used for this translation (and his other Rougon-Macquart translations) cannot be reproduced by any modern, 21st century translator. His Zola translations are classics, with all their faults!

Great Book with Bad Translation/Print By Irene Music I am unsure if this book is available in English trans from someone other than Ed Vit. and Mondial book publishers, but there are several mistakes in translation that are more oversights and bad editing than any real translational problem between English/French. As well, there is an entire section in which the translator removed a description of Zola's, because he thinks the English audience wouldn't be interested. Incase he's reading this, I was interested. Zola is an excellent observer, that's part of the charm of his writing, his fabulous descriptions that allow the reader to nearly take part in an event for which they were not present, the descriptions are so detailed and interesting. To have instead an astrisk by Ed telling me at the bottom of the page that my sentiments couldn't take the brutal description...if there isn't a new translation, there needs to be one and a better edited version too! That said, of course, even shoddy trans and editing mistakes can't ruin Zola. I am half way through and just like all others this novel immediately presents great characters that make you curious for more and keep you hooked until the end!!

Humpty Dumpty: a love story, by Philip Q. Chase

About the Author Philip Q. Chase has had a substantial career as an engineer and a businessman. In “Humpty Dumpty: a love story,” his first novel, he has distilled that career to describe an ordinary company: full of romance, intrigue and backstabbing. Phil is intimately familiar with research and development companies. He worked for some years on NASA’s manned space program both with the agency and as a contractor employee. Though he delights in far-out engineering, he is also a great fan of British literature. In “Humpty Dumpty” he has made a stab at being a twenty-first century Jane Austin, making ordinary things interesting.

By Maxine Leshay HD: A Love Story is an excellent and well-written novel about unrequited love between a boss and his secretary in the work place. The author kept me totally engaged throughout, and I found it hard to put the book down until its satisfying conclusion. I recommend it to anyone who has ever been smitten by a colleague and wonders "what if?" Looking forward to more books by P. Q. Chase in the future!

This tale of an obsessive love that almost destroys a man By Paula Susan This tale of an obsessive love that almost destroys a man, and the enigmatic woman of his ardor, aroused in me both annoying frustration and recklessly romantic hope. A compelling read that mixes business, pleasure, and heartache. In well chosen words, it delivers surprising twists and turn-on's and turn-off's. I certainly was engaged!

REWARD: Twenty gallons of Rum for the Delivery into My Custody of one Colonel George Bloody Arthur. The Reprobate's Offences include Fraudulently Impersonating a Lieutenant Governor. For I Am the TRUE George! William Burr, the son of an English settler in South America, had a steady job hunting mahogany pirates in British Honduras. One day, injured and recovering after a jungle skirmish, he receives a letter from John McQuillan, his old friend and now Chief Police Magistrate in Hobart Town, with the offer of a reward for the capture of a notorious outlaw: and so Burr sets sail for the Antipodes, though with little idea of what to expect. He arrives in Van Diemen's Land, the most isolated and feared penal colony of the British Empire, in 1830, to find a world of corruption, brutality, and mystical beauty. Following the trail of Brown George Coyne, the charismatic outlaw leader of a band of escaped convicts, Burr is soon rushing headlong through the surreal, mesmerizing Vandemonian wilderness, where he will discover not only the violent truth of British settlement, but also the love of a woman, and the friendship of an Aboriginal tracker, himself an outcast on an island of outcasts. A brilliant and beguiling Australian Western by a writer of astonishing talent. Visceral, phantasmagoric, explosive, and exhilarating—you have never read anything like it.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. `Pulling the machete would only increase the length of his life .. By Jennifer Cameron-Smith ..so he could live with the knowledge of his certain death a little longer.'In the prologue to `Infamy', William Burr is wounded while hunting mahogany thieves in British Honduras. While recuperating, he receives a letter from his former employer, John McQuillan, who is now the chief magistrate of Hobart Town in Van Diemen's Land. In this letter, Burr is invited to earn a reward:` ... One thousand acres of prime grazing pasture on the Coal River, Van Diemen's Land, if you want it. Reward from our old friend Lieutenant Governor Arthur (Colonel Holier Than Thou), who appearsthwarted in his ability to capture an escaped felon.'The escaped felon is Brown George Coyne, who has offered 20 gallons of rum for George Arthur's arrest. It is summer in 1830 when William Burr arrives in Hobart Town, Van Diemen's Land (now Hobart, Tasmania). This is the era of bloodshed, bushrangers and convicts, and of dispossession of the Aborigines as a consequence of pastoral expansion. It's a place in which the European settlers try hard to replicate their memories of `Home'.There are a number of key characters in this novel in addition to William Burr. Colonel Arthur himself has a significant role, as does the larger than life Brown George Coyne who lives with his followers in the mountains to the southwest. Coyne has discovered gold and with it considerable power. Other characters include police magistrate Stephen Vaughan and his wife Ellen, the `ship trader' Charles Trentham, a mainland Aborigine - Robert Ringa - who they wanted to use to track down men for hanging, and Tilly Holt who works in Government House.Just after Burr arrives, Ellen Vaughan is kidnapped, and he sets out to rescue her. The story unfolds over a few days, and Burr's adventures are only part of the story. There is rebellion in Hobart Town, and plenty of violence as bushrangers, convicts, officials and settlers jostle for power. Will William Burr be able to rescue Ellen Vaughan, and what will happen to Brown George Coyne? And the Aborigines? What is justice in this place?I found it hard to put this novel down. `Infamy' incorporates history into a fast-paced and riveting fictional colonial crime story. It is bushranger Matthew Brady (1799-1826) who posted a reward of 20 gallons of rum for Colonel Arthur, and references to the Black Line (1830) are a reminder of the shameful treatment of Tasmanian Aborigines. There are a significant number of characters representing different strata of colonial society and this could be confusing, but it isn't. Each character has a part to play, and each part fits into Mr Bartulin's portrayal of colonial Van Diemen's Land. It's a bloodthirsty world, but the violence never seems gratuitous. Sometimes tragic, often uncomfortable but not gratuitous.`The inevitable needs no map ...'Jennifer Cameron-Smith

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An Australian Western? That's new! By Sarah Frost 7/1 - A Tasmanian western set in 1830. This reads like historical fiction (where the main characters and/or main story is based in fact but the rest is from the author's imagination), but it's not. It's just fiction, but the way it's written makes it feel more sophisticated and genuine than I would have expected from a new writer. Except for it being Australian and on land it reminds me of Sean Thomas Russell's Under Enemy Colours, which is based, in part, on fact. I'll have to go look Mr Bartulin up and see who he is and where he's from. To be continued...10/1 - Bartulin is indeed Australian and this isn't his first book, but it is his first historical/western - his previous books were crime novels. This isn't a run-of-the-mill fiction where the good guy survives after a near fatal battle and the bad guys gets what's coming to him, either physically or, if he doesn't die, he's shown up for what/who he really is. Don't even expect a particularly happy ending for the main characters - 1830s Tasmania (hell, the whole country) was a rough place and Bartulin doesn't gloss over the fact. Consider Deadwood or Hell on Wheels versus the 1950s westerns with Clint Eastwood, in Deadwood everyone was dirty, foul-mouthed and spent most of their time drinking, fighting or having sex and then they died (usually violently), but in a Clint Eastwood western there was some polite fisticuffs followed by a quiet drink and then he rode off into the sunset with a clean, well-dressed lady. Infamy is much more Deadwood than Clint Eastwood, and therefore much more realistic. Recommended to fans of westerns and Australians looking for realistic fiction about their own country.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Beginnings of a Post-Apocalypse Tradition By Randy Stafford After watching the original version of the BBC's Survivors: Complete Original Series 1975-1977, I decided to read this, one of the first post-apocalypse novels. To be sure there were earlier stories that killed off most or all of humanity including Mary Shelley's "The Last Man" (1826) and Edgar Poe's "The Conversation of Eiros and Charmion" (1839), but Jefferies may have been the first to create and describe new social orders in the world after the apocalypse. Here, England befalls some unknown disaster which empties London and creates a vast lake in the center of the country. The first five chapters of the book are Jefferies' future historian narrating how the ecosystem of England has changed, and there is no mention of the hero of the rest of the novel: Sir Felix Aquila. And they stand at the beginning of a line of speculation about the decay of the world after humanity that continues through the cable tv show Life After People (History Channel). As for Felix, he's the usual impoverished aristocrat who wants to impress the daughter of richer aristocrats, and he leaves home seeking fame and fortune. His story ends rather abruptly and, frankly, it's not that interesting. You can get a nice sense of the book's strengths by reading the first five chapters and chapters 23 and 24.The ecologically centered post-apocalypse tale wasn't to achieve these heights again until George R. Stewart's Earth Abides.

Early Post-Catastrophe novel still of interest By Richard Bowden Jefferies' AFTER LONDON is one of the earliest sample works of 'post-catastrophe' fiction in English: one of those books which deal with events after dire events have wrecked civilisation, frequently reducing it to barbarism. It is divided into two parts: the first, and shorter, being a detailed account of the resurgence of nature in the aftermath of an (unspecified) national disaster; the second a more conventional account of the society which remains, which has reverted back to a variant of medieval feudalism. Hero Felix seeks to justify and claim the love of Aurora, an idealised figure beyond his reach due to the social strictures of his time. He sets out his man-made canoe to prove himself and his encounters with the world make up the remainder of the book. The novel finishes rather abruptly; bearing in mind how close it appeared to the end of Jeffries' own life that was marked by failing health, one wonders if a sequel was planned or if the writer was obliged to end things earlier than he might otherwise have wished. As a writer Jefferies' main stengths lay in the power of his descriptive prose - something recognised and valued by his contemporary readership - which is almost photographic in style, revealing a real love of nature and natural phenomena. No surprise, then, that the best parts of AFTER LONDON are those from in the first part. Written, it seems by some unnamed future natural historian, the first section has also been the most influential on later writers. The second part often has the same static, observational quality which, given the needs of narrative of this part is sometimes less effective. Felix's quest is in no hurry getting started and a modern reader, used to modern pacing, may feel restless. However the two or three chapters which later describe Felix's entry and exploration of the luminous and treacherous swamp play again to Jefferies' strengths as a writer, providing an apocalyptic vision made both real and symbolic at the same time. This hellish journey is, undeniably a great highlight of his book and worth the wait.AFTER LONDON's odd structure is both a strength and a disadvantage: it allows Jefferies to play to his strengths as naturalist but also weakens the structural integrity of his work, leaving any real action to wait while the reader is left to guess at suggested origins of the narrator who, presumably, recounts both halves but who leaves little clue as to his own historical perspective. Modern readers however will still find much to enjoy in an original work which contains (in this reviewer's opinion) some of the most remarkable scenes and sustained descriptions of the natural world in English fantasy.Comment Comment | Permalink

Chambers Addie and Dan have been trying to learn to live with the aftermath of their son Josh's role in the death of Dennis Solnicki, a younger playmate. Now, a year later, someone is trying to mess with their minds. Is it the Solnickis, even though they seem to have forgiven Josh and his parents? And whoever it is, how far are they going to go?It's also a story of two mothers who have both lost their sons, one by death, the other by incarceration. And the unanswered question: Could Addie, knowing that Josh had mental issues, have prevented the tragedy? The story is fiction, but it could be real-life with its believable storyline as two mothers learn to deal with their loss.

When Jane Austen’s doctor discovers the secret to immortal life in 1817, she thinks her wishes have come true. But when she wakes up from the dead, a penniless Miss Austen finds herself in 1925, having to become a governess to five girls of an eccentric and bohemian family at the crumbling Manberley Castle by the sea. This is a delightful, fanciful story filled with Jane Austen's characters and-BONUS-Jane Austen herself! Her miraculous resurrection in the year 1920 is only a minor plot factor at the beginning and end. It's just a plot device to set up the real story, which is the romantic struggles of a dysfunctional family full of 5 daughters (sound familiar?). Jane, who needs money, is hired to act as a sort of governess-slash-companion-slash-personal counselor for the girls. There's also one son, Will, who also factors strongly in the story.Ms. Austen, having high intellect and 41-year-old experience in her now-21-year-old body, works wonders with the family. In believable step by step, she gradually earns the trust of all in the household and helps them unite. Considering how disconnected they are with each other when she arrives, it would be interesting to see how this character would fix a similar household filled with cell phones, computers and ipads in the 21st century! In wonderfully creative ways, the author brings in various characters and love stories from Ms. Austen's masterpieces, using none of their original names. Naturally, the girls exhibit attributes of the major heroines, with interesting story overlaps. You'll find Anne Elliot mixed with a dash of Jane Bennet and Elinor Dashwood, although you'll mostly find Jane Bennet's character in another of the sisters. Emma Woodhouse's story, interestingly, blends with Louisa Musgrove's along with some personality traits borrowed from Lydia Bennet, and Marianne Dashwood's story mixes with that of Harriet Smith. Yes, Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy are present, also, though I would say the two books that are mostly reflected here (through a lovingly warped mirror) are Persuasion and Sense and Sensibility. You will recognize male characters from all the source books as well, but I'm highlighting the girls in this review since they're the central characters. All of these love stories, as well as the love story surrounding Jane Austen herself, come together in fairytale fashion at one pivotal dance near the end of the book.Ordinarily, I would be critical of a book that has so much going on with so many different characters, but somehow Ms. Odiwe weaves it together in a way that makes perfect sense, especially by providing just one climactic scene for all. As I was reading, at first I was disconcerted by the reflections Jane Austen occasionally has. These snippets of her previous life in the 19th century, while logical for the character, seem to be tangents unrelated to the primary stories, which are plentiful enough. However, there is a brief scene near the end that seems to provide closure for her, since she obviously would miss all her family and loved ones who had died long ago despite being in the enviable position of coming back to life after so many years.I'm not certain how much a reader who is NOT familiar with Jane Austen's works would enjoy this. While it is an excellent stand-alone novel, there are just so many characters. It was easy for me to relate them immediately to the books I recognized them from, but it's possible there are too many different characters for the uninitiated to keep track of.For myself and all other Jane Austen enthusiasts, this is a must-read. It's a marvelous compilation of parts of her much-loved works, and Ms. Odiwe deserves kudos for doing it so successfully.

I quite liked it.If you're looking for a scientifically logical book, then this isn't for you. In fact, we're given no explanation at all about how the good doctor brought Jane back to life, simply that he did. I was okay with that because the book is written in a way that does not strive to be sci-fi in the least. For my part, I love Jane Austen's plots/stories, but I do not like her writing style at all. So I love watching movies/shows about her works, yet cannot ever get through an entire book of hers. Therefore, this book was right up my alley because it was a very Austen-like plot, but the writing was more modern and digestible. If you're like me in that regard, I think you'll like this. The book had several romantic leaves off the main plot tree, some I cared about and some I didn't. There were quite a few characters, but I was actually able to keep most of them straight as they were all written quite differently and memorably. The only issues I took with the book were that a few of the scenes were way too closely Jane Austen's. For example, there was the scene where Emily deliberately embarrassed the genteel poverty character, Miss Beales, at the picnic and then was later shunned by Jonathan--even going so far as to quote that it was "poorly done, Emily," much like the original quote to Emma in that Austen novel. Excluding the quote, the scene was still nearly Emma and Mr. Knightley verbatim, and I felt that it was just a little too close to the original. The other issue I took was Jane's illness at the end of the book. It came out of nowhere and was resolved equally fast. It wasn't even explained what happened. Was it her previous illness coming back--the one that killed her before? Was she still in danger? Like... what is going on with that whole plot particle? It only lasted a chapter.Anyway, overall, I quite enjoyed this book. It's definitely a feel-good kind of novel, and sometimes that's exactly what one needs.

By Meredith (Austenesque Reviews) While suffering greatly from the disease that would take her life, Jane Austen learns that her doctor, Dr. Lyford, is conducting some pioneer studies on immortal jellyfish and transdifferentiation. In a secret attempt to cheat death, Jane and Cassandra consult with Dr. Lyford about using his knowledge to cure Jane Austen’s illness or possibly extend her life a little. The study unfortunately took a bit longer than expected, and several generations later in the year 1925, Jane Austen is finally able to resume life among the living! (Our dream come true, right?)In order to support herself, Jane Austen takes a position as a governess to five young girls in a crumbling estate in Devon. The only thing is, this isn’t a typical governess position, and Jane Austen’s young charges are a good deal older than expected. But our dear Jane is made of stern stuff and has courage that rises with every attempt of intimidation. ' Jane takes on the discordant and troubled Milton family and tries to be the friend, supporter, and guide they all need. With such a large task on her hands, Jane is fearful her time to write more novels may be in short supply. But that may be the least of her worries as an unexpected suitor comes onto the scene and tries to win her heart…Oh my! What a sensational and supremely original story! Jane Odiwe, who we’ve seen play with time-slipping and magical phenomena before, has taken her creativity to a new level with this brilliant original tale about Jane Austen as a governess and alive in the 1920s. Not only do readers have the special treat of seeing dear Jane as a main character, but the young people in this story all bear some resemblance to characters from Jane Austen’s novels. While none of them share the same name or exactly the same personality and situations, it is quite a diversion for the reader to spot characters who remind them of Colonel Brandon, Anne Elliot, Mr. Knightley, and Elizabeth Bennet. Some characters are pretty easy to figure out, but others, especially those who might be a mix of two characters, took some time and pondering. It was quite a lovely to see so many Jane Austen personalities in one setting!I can’t really pinpoint what I loved most about the story, because I loved it all! I loved the large cast of characters and seeing their interactions, I loved seeing Jane Austen adapt to a new time period, way of life, and job, and I loved observing how through her little ideas and nudges Jane made the lives better of all those around her. I felt that this was just like her. That it would be her way to be so instrumental and have such an impact on all those around her.In addition, I thought Jane Odiwe executed this clever and complex premise masterfully. With so many characters to juggle, crisscrossing storylines, and the scientific breakthrough of immortal life, this story could have felt a little fantastical and overwhelming. I commend Ms. Odiwe for taking all these elements and skillfully finding a way to make them come together so harmoniously. Readers who are familiar with this author’s previous works, will know that she writes with a very artistic eye and her novels usually include lush descriptions and vibrant details. So many scenes in this book effortlessly popped into my mind – the dresses, the estates, the dances – all in vivid color and detail. Such visually stimulating prose! With Jane Austen being alive in the 1920’s and earning her keep as a governess, Jane Austen Lives Again sometimes felt like Downton Abbey meets Mary Poppins/Sound of Music (which are some of my favorite things!). It was a wonderful blend of history, fiction, and fairy tale! Absorbing, ingenious, and immensely satisfying – you definitely don’t want to miss Jane Austen Lives Again!Austenesque Reviews

Good, but not what I was expecting By Robert Jordan As a biologist, all I had really heard of Huxley was that he was considered "Darwin's Bulldog" because he was such a strong proponent of evolutionary theory. There appear to be a number of books by Huxley available on Amazon and I figured this one would be a good place to start.Overall, there were definitely some sections that I enjoyed readings and captured my interest. These were mainly the sections on scientific topics, for example his chapters on yeast and the formation of coal. I also found his discussion on the education of doctors interesting. However, there were other chapters that dealt with the educational system in England and the metaphysics of sensation that were a chore to get through. The long section on ethnology started out interesting but delved much further into the topic than my interest in the subject.Overall, I would recommend the chapters on scientific subjects and the essay on medical education. And I do not recommend the other chapters and the discussion on ethnology. My review and recommendation may be a bit biased due to my own scientific bent, so I suggest you take my opinion with a grain of salt.

“A chilling modern fairy tale ... caustic, bleak ... wrought with a terrible, fabulist beauty.” —Kirkus Reviews

Hanka didn’t ask to see the fates of her loved ones. She didn’t invite the raven into her nightmares, with his riddles of suffering and death. She didn’t ask, at six years old, to be responsible for saving her family.

But fate chooses us, and Hanka can either play the raven’s game, or watch her family die.

The question is, will the raven play by the rules? Or is Hanka his final victim?

Already a best-seller in Poland, Absolute Sunset is now available in English for the first time in a professional, edited translation. A must-read for fans of dark psychological thrillers.

Readers say: “Mesmerizing, scary and chilling ... you know people like this exist.” “A huge piece of the sad, overwhelming reality of Poland a few decades ago.” “I felt like Absolute Sunset wanted to kill me.” “Left me thinking long after finishing the book.”

Warning: Absolute Sunset is an intense novel, with serious themes including mental illness and abuse. Not appropriate for young or sensitive readers

Besecker Let me start out by qualifying my review with the fact that I love the stories about the dark, twisted, disturbing and indecent side of human nature. Violence, language, taboo... none of it phases me. If I'm affected emotionally by the book, I feel like my time was well spent. I open books wanted to be affected. I crave that interaction. When "Absolute Sunset" was recommended to me, I expected shock value. I'm not easily phased so I wasn't worried. The book was not originally written in English, so I was nervous about the translation.I had no idea what I was in for. I was blindsided with the experience. There is a certain level of shock value with the book, but it's not for novelty's sake. The book is disturbing and difficult to read, but to great effect. I don't believe I've ever read a book that sucked me in this quickly and then twisted my heart into knots. Sitting down and reading a book in one sitting isn't unheard of for me. As much as I wanted to with "Absolute Sunset" there is no way I could have. I was compelled to keep reading but the story was so taxing on my nerves that I would eventually force myself to put it down for no other reason than to give my mind a respite. This story played with me at a subconscious level, working me back and forth with a total disregard for my state of unrest.I hesitate to even touch on the plot as I want as many readers as possible to go into the story as I did. There are no spoilers beyond this point, but if you want a roller coaster ride you'll never forget, just stop here and open the book. For those I haven't already convinced…"Absolute Sunset" follows Hanka as she navigates poverty stricken post-communist Poland. She is visited throughout childhood by dreams of a raven that bring with it prophetic visions of destruction and doom. As the prophecies build and the tragedies amplify, Hanka is forced to play the raven's games where she will hopefully be able to unlock the mystery of the premonitions and warn everyone before it's too late.Knowing English was not the original language "Absolute Sunset" was released in, I'm even more intrigued with this novel. The book was well written and to the point, at times bordering on simple. This actually added to the overall appeal for me. It could have been heavy handed but the simplicity gave the story a realistic sense of urgency. I'm assuming some of this was due to the translation. I loved this book from beginning to end because it affected me so deeply. I will be recommending this book for years to come.

'Absolute Sunset' perfectly captures the nature of violence and psychosis. The author has created a strong, distinctive and very detailed psychological portraits of the characters in the story. Also that is a huge piece of sad, overwhelming reality of Poland few decades ago. I simply couldn't stop reading this book!Highly recommended!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Absolute Sunset is rated a high four on the Twisty-Cranky scale By Rineholt1 Read for an honest review for Twisted Book CurmudgeonI've described this book as beautifully strange and I mean that in the best possible way.Set in post-communist Poland, a stultifying, bleak place, the story revolves around three main characters: Hanka (daughter), Janusz (father), and Sabina (mother), trapped in domestic horror where poverty and circumstances has reduced nearly all of their options. As a child, Hanka is visited by the raven in her dreams. The raven is a malevolent presence bringing visions of horror that may, in fact, be prophetic.Combined with cryptic messages of impending danger and doom, the raven is an omen, both a friend and tormenter, and an angel and a demon. He may also symbolize more than prophecy. Something grounded beyond the world of dreams and squarely in "this" one.As tragedies unfold and the raven's prophecies increase, Hanka is sucked into the vortex. To play the games and try to gain her freedom. This is a masterclass of theme and tone. Dark, bleak, and twisty. It's part psychological thriller, part suspense, and part horror. It has supernatural elements and is also, a meditation on domestic horror that happens behind closed doors and is covertly endorsed in the environment in which it takes place. Unhappiness is the default position, a constructed and accepted natural state. The work is vivid and compelling. The plot, narrative, characters, and events push you along at a breakneck pace. The surreality of situations keeps you guessing.Absolute Sunset missed being a five star read by "this" much. Primarily, for two reasons 1) I found the parenthesis included in the narrative distracting. It dragged me out of the story. I didn't want to be dragged out of this story. I wanted to be immersed in its languid prose of unfolding horror. 2) There is a bit of head hopping where you swap from one character's point of view in the same paragraph and into the other's in the next. This writer has an enormous amount of talent and I will be certainly reading any more works from her. If you love suspense, thriller, mystery, and musings on the human social condition, pick this up. You won't be disappointed.

Language Notes Text: Spanish

From the Publisher A real classic in Spanish literature.

About the Author Juan Valera (1824-1905).

Young Gillom Rogers has just given the coup de grace to a famous gunfighter involved in a bloody saloon shootout in 1901 El Paso, Texas. After swiping J.B. Books's matched Remington pistols off his body, Gillom thinks he may be able to ride this spectacle to fame and glory as the last shootist. But Gillom is an eighteen-year-old with lots of growing up to do, and showing off his new pistols quickly gets him into a gunfight he didn't bargain for.

Gillom sets out for adventure, determined to become a shootist like his hero, John Bernard Books. On his dangerous journey into manhood, he runs into yellow journalists, a New Mexican horse breaker, and a train robber. When he meets a Hispanic saloon dancer named Anel in the booming copper mining town of Bisbee, Arizona, Gillom Rogers is forced to reconsider what kind of man he really wants to be.

Miles Swarthout's The Last Shootist is the sequel to one of the most famous Westerns ever written, and concludes the tale of a junior shootist's coming-of-age in a dazzling gunfight in a deadly pimp's whorehouse, as a trio of fiery teenagers ride hard into a new twentieth century.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A new Western classic By Steve Griffith Bought a copy last week at a Barnes and Noble bookstore. It is a rare feat when a sequel tops the original--particularly when the original (The Shootist) is a bona fide classic--but The Last Shootist has done just that. Swarthout's development of each of the main characters is superb, and for sure I can't imagine a better depiction of an eighteen-year-old protagonist. The dialogue is equally superb. Not only is the story line compelling from start to finish, but its pace is brisk throughout--literally never a dull moment. Finally, Swarthout manages to pull off a dramatic, surprising and satisfying ending. This book easily merits a five-star rating and, in my view, is nothing short of a new Western classic.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Not bad if it were the product of a writing assignment for a junion high English class. By non-tech guy The worst I can say about this book is to point out that it would likely never have been published had the author had not been the son of great Glendon Swarthout and played off his father's literary triumph "the shootist', He does not know the first thing about story telling. And apparently he thinks that it a proper western so long as the author names every piece of a saddle and include fist and gun fights. This is the only western I have read, and I have read a great many, where the author felt the need to lean on pornographic prose to keep the reader's interest. With so many western that have achieve the status of great literature, there's no excuse to pick this book up.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Attempt that falls short By Robert E. Skinner Miles Swarthout has written a sequel of sorts to his father's The Shootist, but it falls short of the standard set by Glendon Swarthout. The main character, Gillom Rogers, doesn't really resemble the character as originally described in Glendon Swarthout's classic western novel. He makes choices and commits actions for which the author provides no reasonable explanation. His character is poorly developed and the climax seems forced. Swarthout wants to be a writer on par with his late father, but this novel suggests that he needs a lot more writing experience. It was a mistake for him to attempt something as ambitious as he did here.
