Excerpt from A Texas Pioneer: Early Staging and Overland Freighting Days on the Frontiers of Texas and MexicoI was born in the city of Hanover, Germany, on the 28th day of February, 1845, and I was three and a half months old when my parents emigrated from that country and brought me with a sister and brother to America. We made the voyage in a sailing vessel, the Charles Williams, which left Bremen with a full crew and one hundred and thirty passengers on board. The city of Galveston, Texas, was sighted about the middle of July, 1845, after making a safe voyage of seven weeks' duration, but many of those who greeted the land of their adoption with joyful expectations were destined to a watery grave when entering the harbor.I do not know what brought about the catastrophe, but my parents, who gave me this information, said that the ship was stranded when passing through the channel leading into Galveston Bay, about half a mile from shore, where it was broken to pieces, and the wreck could be seen as late as 1885. Only thirty-five of the passengers were saved, and they were rescued by a life-boat that was sent from the shore. Among them was an infant boy, about two years of age, who was thrown to my parents after they entered the boat, by some one on the vessel, under the impression that the child belonged to our family. Fortunately the boat conveyed its living freight safely to land, but none of the desolate people could comprehend their losses until they congregated on shore, and one of those who realized them least was the author of these memoirs, who at the age of five months was thus transferred from the wreck of a ship and placed on the soil of Texas.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Mr. Santleben was a freighter moving goods and money between San Antonio and Mexico. The details of the freighting business, the troubles with bandits and Indians on remote 'roads', and the rising competition with other freighters are all told very, very well. I would buy this book simply for the pleasure of experiencing what he experienced. You are there.

Very Informative By Bay Rat Persons interested in how frontier business was conducted and the social intercourse of citizens on both sides of the Rio Grande will really enjoy this book. The undoubtedly was there, did that, and endured. A really great read about the nature of westTexas in it's frontier days. I recommend this book to those interested in more of Texas than just Indian raids.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. An Easy Read By Kenneth R. Velten I had never read any of George Henty's works before. Yes they are aimed at young men but include a level of detail about places and events not normally covered by current fiction. You can read this quickly and do not worry about inappropriate violence or sex. This book covers the Crimean War about which most Americans only know of the Charge of the Light Brigade. This book details the challenges of military camp life during the war.

Foster The Crimean War and the incompetence of the British officer corps is well documented in this work of historical fiction. It was the last British war in which totally inexperienced men could be commissioned because of civilian ranking or wealth. It was the beginning of a much better hospital corps, and the conflict in which Florence Nightingale was made famous. The exploits Jack Archer are very unlikely, but demonstrate some of the requirements that were made on midshipmen in the days when ships were made of wood and men of steel.

I read the whole thing, but every once in a while I thought about dumping it. It's a story of a young (sixteen, I think) man's adventures serving in the British army in the1800's in the Crimean War. It's mostly interesting, to an adult, as a study of the society and living conditions of the time. The plot is rather simplistic: the hero, Jack Archer, gets into a series of adventures which he and his companions manage to survive mostly by Jack's inventiveness, fighting skills, and luck. I think a young teenager would be the best target audience because of the adventures. However, the author included a lot of information about the movements of the various units of the armies involved in each of the battles, none of which information impacted the story. Those parts can be skimmed though until the plot takes up again. Language and actions of the story are totally clean. I'd have no problem having my grandchildren read this.

It is a thick softcover that reminds me of a moleskin in its pliability. The exterior color is a shimmering gold with a brushed pattern. The front cover is the very start of the book. The back cover is the very end.The pages are tinted ever so slightly blue. The edge of the pages are blue. The paper is a thick, heavy paper that takes ink quite well. The interior cover flap is blue with daises on it.I believe the chapters or parts start and they are colored in yellow.This yellow is extremely hard to read. The rest of the text is blue. It is easy to read but very, very small. It does not feel like you are writing on text. That is how small it is.It is a quality piece of work and absolutely beautiful.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Some Great Intermediate Info, but With Mistakes By Carla Hoskins This is a very well written book, in general. I would say that it is geared more toward a soaper who has grasped the basics, and is ready for a beginning to intermediate view of soaping. There are mistakes in here, however. One....oils added at 'superfat' stage do still go through saponification. Complete saponification does not occur simply by mixing to trace. Second, carmine does not give a 'rich red' color in soap. It does not survive the saponification process and instead dulls out. Yes, they are bug shells, though, and that is a great fact to know. There are some other issues and mistakes in the book. I believe this would be a great book with a revamp.

About the Author Allen was born in Leicester, England in 1864. After leaving school at the age of fifteen to support his family, Allen worked, read, and carefully observed the world around him. It was not until he was thirty-eight that he wrote "From Poverty to Power," one of his first motivational books. His next book, "As a Man Thinketh," established his reputation as an inspirational writer. Other books on spirituality included "The Eight Pillars of Wisdom" and "From Passion to Peace." Although his writing career lasted for only ten years, until his death in 1912, Allen produced twenty titles that influenced millions in the same manners as the words of Dale Carnegie and Norman Vincent Peale.

Mr. Bell has a reputation for explaining the seemingly unexplained. He is frequently called upon to investigate circumstances which have been deemed supernatural by most if not all observers. Of course, he gets to the bottom of each matter. The authors do a good job of building the intrigue and offering solutions to the mysteries that you don't see coming. I truly enjoyed reading this one.

Set in England, period mysteries maybe 1800's.Quick pace, plausible and good conclusion.I would read more by this author.

By Whistlers Mom I read several of Meade's "Madame Sara" stories in anthologies and have been hoping to find more by her. I'm fascinated by the idea of a woman born in Ireland in 1844 who moved to London with the determination to become a writer. She certainly succeeded, with over 300 published books. Most were for children, but she wrote some wonderful mysteries, usually collaborating with one of two doctors-writers. Maybe she felt that having a man's name on her mysteries would make them more appealing. She was a shrewd marketer.This one appeared in 1898 and was co-authored by Robert Eustace. It contains six stories narrated by "ghost-hunter" John Bell. He's a wealthy man who investigates paranormal activity. Maybe he's found some real ghosts in the course of his career, but in these six stories human ingenuity and greed drive the plot.Although I've read a lot of Victorian mysteries, these are all new to me. Before the advent of epublishing, most work from that era was out of print and only a few of the very best were available in anthologies. I think it's a testament to Meade's talent that these very good stories aren't even considered to be her best.I couldn't really pick out a favorite of these stories. Bell is an excellent story-teller and a likeable man. It's interesting that I had pictured him as a young (or youngish) man and was surprised to find him giving advice to another character on the basis of being twice as old. Since the other man couldn't be less than thirty, apparently Bell is in his sixties. Highly unusual for a Victorian Era detective.The closing story ("To Prove an Alibi") uses a device that sounded very familiar to me. Wilkie Collins (the father of the Victorian mystery) used the idea in his story "A Terribly Strange Bed." I don't know when that one was published, but Collins died in 1889. Did Mrs. Meade and Dr. Eustace intentionally steal an idea from Collins? Epublishing is said to have set up fertile ground for literary theft, but maybe it's not a new phenomenon at all. And since the three authors involved are all long since with the angels, I think we can enjoy their stories without any guilt.

Robert Barclay (1648-1690) wrote his classic exposition and defense of Quakerism in Latin and published it in 1676 as Theologiæ Vere Christianæ Apologia. He then translated his own book into English. The Apology has since been reprinted over 60 times and translated into several other languages.Barclay's education enabled him to understand academic theology. Most early Quaker publicists used a distinctive Quaker vocabulary which was often misunderstood by educated theologians, whom the Quakers misunderstood in turn. Thus in early debate literature, Friends and their opponents often talked past each other, taking the same words in different senses. Barclay bridges this gap, defending Quaker usage while clearly explaining it for the benefit of those who were accustomed to a different vocabulary.This is not to say that the theological differences between Quakers and other sects were mere differences of vocabulary. There were doctrinal differences of substance; and most of Barclay's effort is directed at defending Quaker doctrine and showing its superiority, in logic and faithfulness to Scripture, to competing doctrines of his time, especially those of Calvinism. His ability to do this effectively is greatly enhanced by his having a good understanding of the competing theologies, as well as by his ability to surmount the verbal barrier.The Apology was frequently reprinted throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Suddenly, early in the 20th century, the printings ceased. The last printing of the full text, so far as we have been able to learn, was in 1908 in Philadelphia.

Relaxing and enjoyable By EJDivitt I received a pdf of this book for free in exchange for an honest review.I printed this book out and left it and a package of colored pencils on my coffee table for Christmas day when I was having 13 people over for dinner. Several of the adults and two of the kids sat down and started coloring. Two of the adults even took theirs home to finish later when they didn't complete it before dinner.People had a lot of positive comments. One person said they had a headache and felt better after coloring one of the pages. Another said it was just relaxing.I'm giving it four out of five stars. When I printed the pages, I could not get them to print the full size of the page even with using the "fit to page" print option. It has an uneven white border around the edges that bothered me.Over all, people liked it and I would say it was a hit.

They range from simple to intricate, and with designs in all styles (some are curvy and swirled, some are boxy and angular, some shapes are recognizable, and some are completely new creations). This is a great book for relaxation - would highly recommend for adult coloring books, especially for those who enjoy intricate patterns.

These books are perfect for relaxing. I run a group home for people with special needs and these graphics are fabulous and age appropriate, by FL standards. I am so happy that my residents love the graphics and the state is happy and I love to color them too. I hope that the creative flow artists put more books out there for everyone to enjoy. Relax and enjoy them!

About the Author James Fenimore Cooper was a nineteenth-century American author and political critic. Esteemed by many for his Romantic style, Cooper became popular for his depiction of Native Americans in fiction. Before Cooper considered himself a writer, he was expelled from Yale University, served as a midshipman for the United States Navy, and became a gentleman farmer. Cooper wrote many notable works including The Pioneers, The Last of the Mohicans, and The Red Rover, which was adapted and performed on stage in 1828. Cooper passed away in 1851 at the age of 61.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A classic By Stephan Stuecklin I'd read "Die schwarze Spinne" in school, back in the day, and thought it would be fun to read it again. It was, though I'd forgotten that 20% of the novella is devoted not to the actual story, but to describing a child's baptism in Gotthelf's time and the idiosyncrasies of society. It's historically and sociologically interesting, and will still get wry smiles from modern readers who recognize themselves or their great-aunts in some of those characters, but editors today would have cut it mercilessly.As is usual with Gotthelf, once the story gets moving, it's a compelling narrative. Unlike his longer works, this novella works as a fable, disguised as the history of way-back-when, but those extra 20% make Gotthelf's point that the threat isn't gone in our day. Sumiswald - the setting - is a real town that still exists today, but as to the historical accuracy of the names mentioned in the story I have no idea.It's a pretty quick read, well written, quirky, and appropriately creepy for a deal-with-the-devil story.

It reminds me of an old, scary, fairytale. There is a central religious/superstitious theme with a good story, plus an interesting window on the way the world looked to people at that time and place. Was a bit slow to get started but worth it.

As a wedding planner, I have struggled in the past to communicate just how essential entertainment is to a successful wedding. Lee Dyson spells that out so clearly that I kept thinking as I read, "Where has this book been all my life?" Chapter 3 (Reception length & layout) is so key for any couple planning a wedding, especially if they are planning on their own, without a coordinator or wedding planner. Lee's tips on dance floor size & placement, lighting and flow of the event are SPOT ON. I also loved the tips for toasters and suggestions of songs for dances (The parents dances always seem to stump my clients) If you are planning a wedding (or if you are a wedding professional), you need this book!

I'm sure lots of couples think, "I'll just have my friend/cousin/uncle handle my wedding music" but having a professional DJ is 100% essential for having a successful party. This book actually delves deeper than just the music; it also goes into schedules/timeline, how to figure out what exact services you need from your DJ, and the meaning of traditions; and it reads quickly, yet eloquently. This would also make an excellent gift for an engaged couple, too. All in all, an outstanding read that will save wedding couples time, agony, and possibly even money by following DJ Lee Dyson's advice.

Reynolds In my capacity as a wedding officiant I've had the privilege and fun of working with Lee on numerous wedding ceremonies. While this book focuses on what happens after the ceremony, I can testify that he is just as much a "killer DJ" at the ceremony!Lee is the consummate professional. When couples tell me that they've hired him, I smile because I know that they are in wonderful hands. Lee understands the psychology of a party crowd and so understands what's needed to take a couple and their guests on a dynamite ride. Use this book as your guide in planning your bash and folks will remember it for all the right reasons!
