22 of 22 people found the following review helpful. An oft retold tale told wonderfully By Jonathan Burgoine I would not have read Bedier's translation of "Tristan and Iseult" on my own. Throughout my degree, and my previous highschool education, I've come across "Tristan and Iseult" in four different forms before Bedier's, and was so tired of the tale that I thought no one would breathe life into it again for me.Not so.Bedier's translation (which was then translated by Hilaire Belloc and completed by Paul Rosenfeld) has repainted "Tristan and Iseult" into a truly living piece of mythology. Presented with exquisite detail, and with portions of the story even my four previous readings had never uncovered, this is, I believe, how the tale was meant to be told.The achetypal doomed-romance, "Tristan and Iseult" is the well-known tale of the romance between those two lovers, born of a magical philtre, and doomed in the face of Iseult's marriage to King Mark. The age of chivalry practically shines from the pages, and the heart-wrenching story itself is a joy to read, with only a few bumps and jolts of prose along the way (likely, I imagine, translation difficulties).If you are at all interested in mythology, especially that of Arthurian theme or times, Bedier's translation of "Tristan and Iseult" is the one for you. You won't be disappointed.

Mercer "The Romance of Tristan & Iseult" is the tale of one of the earliest pairs of star-crossed lovers in literature, heavily researched and drawing from many versions of the story. Having come across the tale in many forms, from the opera "Tristan und Isolde" to cameo appearances in "The Mists of Avalon," this telling is refreshing and spirited. The authenticity of language, as well as the narrator's own action and moral interpretations make one feel that they are sitting near a fire in the great hall listening to a seneschal tell the tale of doomed love."Tristan & Iseult" is fast-paced and beautiful. It is also an invaluable tale to read as an example of the archetypes and symbols of the tragic hero, imbedded Christ imagery, woman on a pedestal, etc.

It includes most of the standard Trollope elements: two people who are in love with each other, but too shy to say so; a fortune-hunting woman and the men she's after; members of the clergy; a bit of Parliament; family life in England in the 1870s; fox hunting; and satire of life in both England and the United States. The characters are extremely well drawn. Although the writing is "old fashioned," the emotions and situations are up-to-date. There is humor, pathos and excellent description.

Clinton All of the underlying themes of Trollope's work are in this book; (1) the underlying strength of women; (2) the weakness of men; (3) and the portrayal of how people manipulate, or attempt to manipulate each other.This book has well-developed characters - as always with Trollope, including a young woman who is seeking to marry a rich man, a rich lord, two rich men who are members of the upper class (but one rung below the lord), a successful farmer, a lawyer, an heiress and a couple of nice people. The book has two successful love stores (Reginald/Mary and Rufford/Penge) and three failed love stories (Twentyman/Masters; Trefoil/Rufford and Trefoil/Morton). It deals honestly with the emotions of all concerned. Every scene is put together with the thoughtful approach of Trollope, who never lets any strand of the plot dangle.What makes this book unusual is Senator Gotobed, who is on a visit from America. The Senator speaks frankly about everything and often offends his English hosts. His comments bring buried tensions to the surface. I ended up admiring the Senator because of his fearlessness and outspokenness. He is, of course, ridiculous and Trollope was having a bit of fun by introducing him to the story.

Good but sometimes tedious By mcerner The American Senator of the title is a stuffy, boring old man who wants to understand English politics and morality but also wants to impose his own morality upon the English. Sadly, the book could have been far more exciting without this character. On the other hand, the characters remaining are interesting enough. This book is mainly about love, or about the pursuit of love or fortune. The scheming and penniless Arabella Trefoil is engaged to a man who we quickly see is far too good for her, and what he sees in her beyond her remote beauty is a big question that is never quite resolved. However, wanting a fortune, she maintains her engagement in private while denying it in public, thus finding herself able to pursue the local squire, Lord Rufford, who is also taken with her beauty but on advice of friends, becomes reluctant to truly woo Arabella. Social interactions between all these parties, including their antecedents, are quite interesting and fill a good portion of the book. On the other hand, another love affair of lesser merit but far more honesty is that of Mary Masters and Reginald Morton, a romance against the Masters' family wishes who pressure both her and the unfortunate Larry Twentyman to make a match. Intrigues from minor characters, plots and subplots, though rather too much mention and detail of fox hunting, still this is a fun read.

Joseph Lincoln creates a world that's completely delightful. If you love the Cape you'll get a big bang out of anything he's written.

A thought provoking read By fictionfan Consequence takes place in a time that readers will acutely remember – post 9/11 and the early months of the Iraq war. The characters in Consequence are activists fresh off their defeat in protesting/preventing the Iraq war, and are now pouring their energy into the issue of GMOs. The fictional story is so seamlessly integrated into real world events (like Abu Ghraib) that you forget that you are reading fiction.One thing to be said about the novel is that Masover’s lyrical language brings the imagery to life. The story takes its time at first, really grounding the reader in this unique time in our history, and also this unique (for most Americans) place – which is San Francisco’s activist community. When the plot really gets rolling, the book is hard to put down. It is a real window-in for how passionate people can be, how protests get planned and executed, and how tempting it might be – in the face of political defeats – to attempt something riskier in order to advance the cause. The book will stay with you in the days and weeks after, as there is much room for real discourse: where is the line between activism and terrorism? What are an activist’s moral obligations? What are our obligations as individuals in a society that consumes without a second thought and without regard for the impact that it has on the environment? “History will be determined by those who act” the character, Christopher, says. From Abu Ghraib to GMOs, there is ample room for discussion and debate regarding our societal responsibilities, and Consequence is a great jumping off point.The book’s timely release coincides with the public’s growing interest and concern with genetically modified food. Barajas "Consequence" is that rarest of stories – a smart, thoughtful and thrilling page-turner. The carefully constructed build-up to a very real act of violence is contrasted by serene domestic moments among a dedicated cohort of political activists. Their lives reveal the subtle dynamics of a chosen family community brought together by shared beliefs and a desire to help reshape the world around them, no matter how daunting a task. The light touch coupled with deep observation is characteristic of Masover’s writing style. The sense of place is so real you can feel the very topography of San Francisco on the pages of Consequence.The activist world Masover depicts is far from Utopian. The inhabitants of the Triangle live humbly – in fact, in one scene, witnessed through the eyes of a non-denizen, their house is positively ramshackle, filled with evidence of poverty such as broken sofas and an antiquated, greasy kitchen. But as we come to know the housemates, we come to know their priorities and passions. They would rather spend what resources they have on helping a friend, or in support of a cause than in feathering their beloved nest.Lest it sound as though Masover sees this world through rose-colored lenses, he casts an insider’s weathered eye over some of the absurdities and the in-fighting within the activist community itself. Dust rises between the various factions, and just as in any established political group, there is a spectrum from toe-the-line to radical fringe. The leaders, we see, are not innocent of some puppeteer-like string pulling of the masses.The characters struggle with the activist’s inherent conundrum: that which is worthy of struggle does not often result in quantifiable results. Allison, Masover’s optimist, sees the difficulty, even when demonstrations are “successful” by sheer numbers. “Turning out 11 million people – 11 million – moves muscles to exactly where decisions get made. We did our part. We created enormous space for insider dissent. It’s the media that failed, and Congress failed harder.”How dangerous, how fine the line between constructive and destructive actions. Two of Masover’s characters trip this line and teeter over the abyss, victims of their own impotent frustration, pawns to those with darker agendas."Consequence" is a cautionary tale about hubris and impatience, but its characters are so human that it is certainly an Everyperson’s story. They live and die by their principles, they go to prison or they go free, or they just go on. Every action we take has a consequence, whether it is the one we intend or something quite different.

Heartfelt, thought-provoking, and suspenseful By Beth As the title suggests, this book is about the consequences that people face when they make the most important decisions about how to lead their lives. The narrator, Christopher Kalman, finds himself straddling the worlds of a close-knit group of collective-living non-violent progressive activists and a highly secretive and conspiratorial fringe character named Chagall whose only method of communication is heavily encrypted email. Christopher's group house, called the Triangle, is composed of people who have known each other and lived and worked together for a long time - indeed, their lifestyle feels a bit like a throwback, including the vegetarian stews that someone always seems to be preparing. They share a commitment to social justice and also long histories of intersecting relationships, romantic and otherwise. Early in the book, one of their circle, Brendan, returns from prison in Mexico, where he was apprehended for (unknowingly) running weapons for the Zapatistas. Also living in the house is a teenage boy named Jonah who has befriended a troubled classmate, a friendship which turns out to have consequences of its own as well. Some of the correspondence between Christopher and Chagall (and later between Chagall and his collaborator Romulus) was a little too techy geekazoid for me to follow, but the contrast with the honest and loving relationships among the housemates is a powerful testament to their very different approaches to social activism.For me, as a Bay Area resident with a (long ago) history of progressive activism, much of the book felt deeply familiar - not only the San Francisco haunts and a certain style of political engagement that overlaps heavily with personal lifestyle and community, but the individuals that inhabit the story, too. The book is suspenseful - I had a sense that some tragedy was looming, but its ultimate shape and a last-chapter twist took me very much by surprise. I recommend it to anyone looking for a thought-provoking story about caring, imperfect people taking risks in an unexpectedly dangerous world.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. An Extraordinary and Unforgettable Story By Martin Kemp Private lives can be affected by political events against the individuals' strongest wishes. Relationships can be distorted by forces beyond the control of those involved in them. This story is about persecution on the grounds of race; but it is also about fathers and sons. The fascinating main character, Konrad Reitzger, hated and despised his father. Old Reitzger was a weak, pompous man who worked as a chemist in the German firm that manufactured the gas Zyklon B, used in the Nazi extermination camps during World War Two. Konrad, forced to fight in the army of the Third Reich, emerges from his war experiences hungry to understand the world, both as a scientist and as a man. Consciously or unconsciously he seeks relationships with men of long experience - father figures. He almost forms such a relationship with an impressive African leader he meets on an exploratory visit to South Africa (whose geography is marvelously evoked), but history comes between them and drives them apart. A subtle twist in the story is that the profound loathing of race hatred is in the heart of a man who fought for a regime most guilty of it; while it is furiously felt and insisted upon by a black man who has been the victim of it in his own country. Overall, this is one of the best stories I have ever read. It is beautifully written, and could haunt your imagination long after you have finished reading it.

It is a beautifully written, marvelously evocative, multilayered, deep, and thought-provoking story that effortlessly weaves together several themes. The story resonates long after one has put the book down.

Unhappy people trapped in sad webs of their own making By Linda Linguvic Sherwood Anderson published this collection of short stories in 1919 all set in fictional town of Winesburg, Ohio. Even though it's written in the third person, it's told through the narrative voice of George Willard, the town reporter, who shows up in most of the stories, sometimes taking an active role and at other times just telling a story.It is obvious that the writer loves these people, and is frustrated at the isolation and unhappiness of their lives, even though he makes it clear that they hold within themselves everything needed to make them happy. The character in the first story is a dying old writer who is attempting to write about all the people he has known as a "book of grotesques". What follows is the collection of stories, which each character fulfilling that expectation.There are the young lovers who don't quite connect; there is a old man so obsessed with religious fervor that he attempts to sacrifice his grandson; there is a married man who regrets it all and tries to warn a younger man of future unhappiness; there's a doctor and a sick woman who try to connect. The book is full of people who toil all their lives and never achieve happiness. As I made my way through the book I kept hoping that even one of the characters would rise above the morass. It didn't happen.The writer has a wonderful sense of place and the town of Winesburg in the early part of the 20th Century is very real. These people were not poor or disadvantaged in the usual sense of the word; they didn't suffer fire, floods or famine. Instead, they trapped themselves in their own psychological webs that made it impossible for them to lead anything but sad unfulfilled lives. This is a fine book and stands alone as a clear voice of its time.

Isn't one of the ultimate benchmarks of successful parenting when your child selects a book from her bookshelf, and says: "Here Dad, you may enjoy this"? Of course I had to overcome that instinctive shudder when I recognized the not very "zippy" title as belong to one of those "school assignment" books I had so successfully dodged. Yet considering it is far past the time to reconsider that initial aversion, and that the only teacher I have to please is myself; and then there is the matter of the pedigree of the recommender... so why not?I did not get past the introduction before I uncovered a recommendation that reinforced the others. Sherwood Anderson was a mentor to both Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner, no small matter in itself. The not very fictional town of Winesburg, Ohio is based on the very real town of Clyde, Ohio, wherever that is. It proves to be located not that far off the shores of Lake Erie, between Cleveland and Toledo. Clyde still has only around 6,000 people, and their website promotes the virtues of small town living. But where is their most famous writer? You have to "drill down" two levels in their website, to find a brief, two sentence mention of the writer who literally "put them on the map." They'd rather talk about their Civil War General, James McPherson, or the Whirlpool plant. So, perhaps the ultimate endorsement: he had told too much about them, a realistic assessment of the town that jars with the "pro-business" image the website promotes, and thus numerous folks today are still not fond of him.The book itself is composed of 24 short stories; many of them could be "stand alone" in their excellence. In some cases the character appears only in that story, such as The Reverend Curtis Hartman in "The Strength of God," or Enoch Robinson in "Loneliness." There are other characters, such as Helen White, and George Willard, who is a reporter for the local newspaper at 18, and is a thinly disguised Sherwood Anderson, who appear in multiple stories. Anderson's introductory story, entitled "The Book of the Grotesques" about a writer who: "All of the men and women the writer had ever known had become grotesques," which may be a bit harsh, but clearly this book is peopled with life's outliers, and many "lives of quiet desperation." Issues that haunt the papers today were covered by Anderson then, such as the male teacher who may have placed his hands on the boys once too often, and was run out of town, and the female teacher who had "a thing" for a lad 12 years her junior. There is also the voyeuristic preacher, and the farmer who is an instrument of "God's will." All not your normal Chamber of Commerce fare.Anderson's prose is lean; his characters are drawn tightly and swiftly, and he seems to have a knack for the specific detail that says so much more about the person. There is also much normalcy in the book; much concerns the longing of the human heart, the figurative and literal groping with the opposite sex that is part of the coming of age process, and beyond. As in real life, the relationships can become complex and ambivalent, and Anderson even speculates on the nature of the solace his fictional mother may have been obtaining from the local doctor. Some reviewers were concerned that everything didn't tie together in the end - but I figure that is the essence of real life. In the conclusion, George Willard, just like the real life Sherwood Anderson, boards the train, and leaves town, seeking his place in the wider world. The irony is that the material for his finest writing was obtained during his first 18 years, in Clyde.Much belated apologies, certainly for myself, as well as those 1-star reviewers, to the English teachers who tried in their Sisyphean task. Mea culpa. And thanks to my daughter for this solid 5-star read.

40 of 43 people found the following review helpful. Surprisingly Modern By SeaShell I'm ashamed to say that I avoided this book for decades - decades! - based soley on a cover. My mother had the book on her bookshelves, an older edition with a painting of a turn of the century couple courting on the front. It looked vaguely impressionist, and left me to conclude that the stories inside would probably be a bunch of sentimentalist claptrap. How wrong I was!The book inside is more akin to a Hopper painting than a Degas. Anderson manages an amazing level of character development within the short stories. The stories themselves work independently, but also work together to tell the story of an American Midwestern town. And the feeling one is left with is that everything you have read is essentially and authentically American.To comment on the Kindle version specifically, it seems well formatted to this reader. I've noticed a typo here and there, but nothing glaring, and nothing that distracts from the experience of reading the book.

Likewise By Glenn Russell Ion is a very short Platonic dialogue between Socrates and a rhapsode by the name of Ion who specializes in reciting the poetry of Homer. The dialogue explores the nature of poetic and artistic inspiration in a most playful way. If you are interested in literature and the arts, you will really enjoy. Likewise, if you haven’t read any Plato, this is a great place to start. To offer a taste, here are a few snatches of the dialogue along with my brief reflections. Sidebar: all of my statements are, in a way, questions, not to be taken as definitive answers; scholars and philosophers have been debating the details of Plato’s thought for over 2000 years.SOCRATES: I often envy the profession of a rhapsode, Ion; for you have always to wear fine clothes, and to look as beautiful as you can is a part of your art. Then, again, you are obliged to be continually in the company of many good poets; and especially of Homer, who is the best and most divine of them; and to understand him, and not merely learn his words by rote, is a thing greatly to be envied. ---------- A stroke of true Socratic irony. The idea of a philosopher envying someone preoccupied with wearing fine clothes and making sure they look beautiful. What a scream. And then to say such a person ‘understands’ Homer. Too much. Plato must have had fun writing this dialogue since he adjudged the philosopher beyond concern with physical appearance and ascribed ‘understanding’ to the realm of abstract, logical thinking.SOCRATES: The gift which you possess of speaking excellently about Homer is not an art, but, as I was just saying, an inspiration; there is a divinity moving you, like that contained in the stone which Euripides calls a magnet, but which is commonly known as the stone of Heraclea. This stone not only attracts iron rings, but also imparts to them a similar power of attracting other rings; and sometimes you may see a number of pieces of iron and rings suspended from one another so as to form quite a long chain: and all of them derive their power of suspension from the original stone. In like manner the Muse first of all inspires men herself; and from these inspired persons a chain of other persons is suspended, who take the inspiration. ---------- What a crystal clear image! The divine muse is the magnetic stone and the poet is the magnetized ring pulled by the stone. And the poet inspires others in the same way: the magnetized ring magnetizes a 2nd and a 3rd ring, forming an entire chain of magnetized rings. Applying this to our site, Crime and Punishment is written by muse-inspired Dostoyevsky, the novel inspires members to write reviews and the reviews inspires comments and more readers of the novel. Thus, according to Plato, everyone in the chain is muse-inspired. How inspiring!SOCRATES: For the poet is a light and winged and holy thing, and there is no invention in him until he has been inspired and is out of his senses, and the mind is no longer in him: when he has not attained to this state, he is powerless and is unable to utter his oracles. ---------- Anybody who loves music and has developed a degree of technical expertise in playing a musical instrument knows the experience of reaching a point, a zone, where the music flows naturally beyond the boundaries of the ordinary thinking mind. When a number of musicians play together and share this inspired state – sheer magic.SOCRATES: Then, my dear friend, can I be mistaken in saying that Ion is equally skilled in Homer and in other poets, since he himself acknowledges that the same person will be a good judge of all those who speak of the same things; and that almost all poets do speak of the same things?ION: Why then, Socrates, do I lose attention and go to sleep and have absolutely no ideas of the least value, when any one speaks of any other poet; but when Homer is mentioned, I wake up at once and am all attention and have plenty to say?SOCRATES: The reason, my friend, is obvious. No one can fail to see that you speak of Homer without any art or knowledge. If you were able to speak of him by rules of art, you would have been able to speak of all other poets; for poetry is a whole. ---------- What a thought-provoking line of reasoning. Applying Socrates’s logic to lovers of novels, when someone can offer penetrating insight into a novel or novels written by one author, they should be able to provide insights into any novel. I sense a fallacy here but this is such an interesting question, I wouldn’t want to spoil it with an answer.

Ion claims to recite and understand the meaning of Homer's poetry as part of his success. Ion is like an actor who overestimates his intelligence and ability, like one who thinks he can run a company because he plays a CEO in a movie (insert actor of choice).This is a short dialogue. Socrates argues that Ion has no real understanding of Homer's content (Homer is the TRUE genius). The rhapsode (the one who recites) is a vehicle. Socrates attributes Ion's success to 'inspiration' from the muses or the god. Not from intelligence.All of Plato is insightful and worth reading, but I liked Ion for two additional reasons. This dialogue is shorter than Plato's other dialogues. Unlike some, there was a clear conclusion reached here, even though is was specific and not universal.

A delight to read and ponder By Steve Lodge I have to say, what I really appreciated about this book was the change in philosophy that the authors help you make. We really are inundated with material possessions in this country and I think most of us (including me) can benefit from a change in attitude. I liked the specific hints and tips that they gave as well. They were eminently practical and refreshing.
