Why would African villagers boil a horse? Konrad Reitzger, who learnt to steel himself against horrors as a soldier of the Third Reich and prisoner of war, is determined to solve the mystery. The village headman, whom Reitzger likes and respects, gives only an implausible and taunting explanation, which annuls the friendship between them. It is through recollections of his father whom he despised - a chemist who worked on the production of the gas used by the Nazis in the extermination camps - that Reitzger finds the answer, and is profoundly disturbed by its implications.

Relationships can be distorted by forces beyond the control of those involved in them. This story is about persecution on the grounds of race; but it is also about fathers and sons. The fascinating main character, Konrad Reitzger, hated and despised his father. Old Reitzger was a weak, pompous man who worked as a chemist in the German firm that manufactured the gas Zyklon B, used in the Nazi extermination camps during World War Two. Konrad, forced to fight in the army of the Third Reich, emerges from his war experiences hungry to understand the world, both as a scientist and as a man. Consciously or unconsciously he seeks relationships with men of long experience - father figures. He almost forms such a relationship with an impressive African leader he meets on an exploratory visit to South Africa (whose geography is marvelously evoked), but history comes between them and drives them apart. A subtle twist in the story is that the profound loathing of race hatred is in the heart of a man who fought for a regime most guilty of it; while it is furiously felt and insisted upon by a black man who has been the victim of it in his own country. Overall, this is one of the best stories I have ever read. It is beautifully written, and could haunt your imagination long after you have finished reading it.

It is a beautifully written, marvelously evocative, multilayered, deep, and thought-provoking story that effortlessly weaves together several themes. The story resonates long after one has put the book down.
