Kitty's Class Day and Other Stories, by Louisa May Alcott

About the Author Louisa May Alcott was both an abolitionist and a feminist. She is best known for Little Women (1868), a semiautobiographical account of her childhood years with her sisters in Concord, Massachusetts. Alcott, unlike Jo, never married: ""...because I have fallen in love with so many pretty girls and never once the least bit with any man."" She was an advocate of women's suffrage and was the first woman to register to vote in Concord, Massachusetts.

Collection of sweet stories with a high moral tone. Contains Kitty's Class Day, Aunt Kipp, Psyche's Art, A Country Christmas, On Picket Duty, The Baron's Gloves, My Red Cap, and What the Bells Saw and Said. You might need a dose of insulin after reading these stories, but if you're in the mood for old-fashioned romances, this collection is just the ticket. Sometimes Alcott wears me out with her fulsome praise of modest girls with housewifely skills, but the preaching in most of these tales is done by the characters' lives rather than a heavy-handed author, and the characters themselves are lively and realistically flawed. Only "A Country Christmas" went over the line into sappy and silly. None of them are particularly plausible, of course. "What the Bells Saw and Said" is a clever political fantasy and homage to Dickens, not Alcott's usual style at all. I didn't notice many word errors.

Some people divide the world into those who are “cat people” and those who are “dog people”. From my point of view, anyone can be a cat person if he finds the right cat. It does not matter how many different pets you had before or if you spent your life breeding cats. Each cat will surprise you with a new personality, with intelligent features that you’d think only humans should have, and with all the love that a cat can offer. This book will explain to you everything you need to know about these amazing pets so you can give them the comfortable life that they deserve. All my life I’ve dealt with cats. Either with abandoned kittens I found on the street, or the sick ones that relatives would call me to pick up, and so on. In the beginning, it seems impossible to understand these strange creatures; one moment they love you, and in the next they bite you. After many years of caring for dozens of saved cats and dozens of newborn kittens that I raised, I can say without a doubt that I am a cat person!

Although short this book gives you a lot of guidance into different problems you can have with a cat and how to overcome them. I really liked the guide at the beginning of the book about when you cat is young and the different stages of them being a kitten, this is really useful. I am also currently thinking of adopting a new kitten and it has some great ideas on how to do this in a good way that will help the resident cat accept the new cat easily. Helpful guide filled with information and one I would recommend to any cat owner or soon to be one.

They are Generation Dementia, high school seniors who have lost their bearings. When a video made about the troubled teens on the garbage truck goes viral, the reality TV crews come around to repackage Generation Dementia and the trash they haul. Narrator Hash O'Connell rebels against this makeover and soon finds he and his friends are confronted with a darker underside of both his community and the cameras now framing it. Hash unearths disturbing secrets about twenty years of lost trash and the lurid tales buried with that refuse. Ultimately, Hash encounters the corruptions off Frick's past, revelations that will transform his understanding of his family's legacy and allow him to emerge from the rubble he has inherited.

Generation Dementia, by Michael Hartnett

Review To understand today's teenagers, connected yet alienated, busy yet seemingly unproductive, read the imaginative book whose title demographers will use to describe the age: Generation Dementia.  Hartnett's satirical but compassionate novel follows its grieving, empty teenage hero through a wasteland of family, social, and political problems. You'll love the ride of this funny and fast-paced story about the conflicts faced by Hash O'Connell and his friends as they travel by garbage truck through reality and virtual reality. - Joseph Gansrow, author of Deconstructing and Reconstructing Sentences In Generation Dementia Michael Hartnett takes readers through the suburban streets of Frick, a village that replaced its traditional garbage men with high school students. One ragtag teen trio - a loner who collects garbage, another who hauls away anything not nailed down and a female violinist - become reality TV stars in a culture where students are over-programmed, over-scheduled and out of touch. Hartnett artfully shows us the only truly non-disposable thing in our society is our garbage. It's an enjoyable and perceptive read from beginning to end.- Alfred P. Doblin, The Record, New Jersey

From the Author I have spent a fair share of time with garbage. I have also witnessed teenagers sitting in a circle, ignoring each other, texting madly on the phone. Generation Dementia joins these two experiences. When the narrator Hash finds 5 1/4-inch floppy disks on the curb of the recently deceased Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Levon Gallagher, he understands that the stories on the disks might well  reveal much not only about the technologies of the past forty years, but about his own family. Ultimately, much is buried in the garbage dumps and even more is floating up in the virtual clouds. I had great fun novel writing the novel.

About the Author Michael Hartnett, a writer and teacher who lives on on Long Island, has spent his fair share of time with garbage. He is also author of the novels Universal Remote and The Great SAT Swindle.

Like Chabon By Michael Kramer Hartnett knows suburbia and he knows teenagers – knows how they speak, carry I-Phones obsessively, want desperately to get into a good college. Like Chabon , Updike, and Irving’s characters, the teenagers in Generation Dementia are aware and oblivious, careful and reckless, motivated and feckless, yet always reaching for their piece of the American Dream. Hartnett reminds us of what we need to hold onto, and what we are throwing away.A thoroughly enjoyable read!

Ruppel A revealing book of our times; one I'm sure to be re-reading again and again to get all the depth and meaning Mr. Hartnet packs into a seemingly simple, engaging tale. This is a novel that captures you with its fascinating characters and intriguing plot and pulls you into their lives and makes you care deeply about their lives, their actions and their motivations. Hartnet's commentary on the alienation of our digitally connected society and how our trash is both deeply private, yet unifying is inspired. Read it on its surface as an excellent story or dig deeper to find meaning in our present day culture, or both. This is a book that keeps on giving, long after you close it's cover.

By Anthony Paladini Get ready for some real trash talk.Mr. Hartnett takes us deep into the world of garbage, and it has never smelled so sweet. Hartnett presents a wonderfully diverse group of characterswho become involved in situations both absurd and touching. The novel moves along at a comfortable pace and the twists and turns will keep you wondering, questioning, and finally understanding. There are some true laugh-out-loud situations, and Mr. Hartnett 's command of language and expressions help drive this delightful tale towards a different outcome then one might have expected."Generation Dementia" is the most enjoyable book I have read in some time.

Émile Zola is one of the greatest writers of the 19th century, and one of France’s best known citizens. In his life, Zola was the most important exemplar of the literary school of naturalism and a major figure in the political liberalization of France. Around the end of his life, Zola was instrumental in helping secure the exoneration of the falsely accused and convicted army officer Alfred Dreyfus, a victim of anti-Semitism. The Dreyfus Affair was encapsulated in the renowned newspaper headline J'Accuse.More than half of Zola's novels were part of this set of 20 collectively known as Les Rougon-Macquart. Unlike Honore de Balzac, who compiled his works into La Comedie Humaine midway through, Zola mapped out a complete layout of his series. Set in France's Second Empire, the series traces the "environmental" influences of violence, alcohol and prostitution which became more prevalent during the second wave of the Industrial Revolution. The series examines two branches of a family: the respectable Rougons and the disreputable Macquarts for five generations. Zola explained, "I want to portray, at the outset of a century of liberty and truth, a family that cannot restrain itself in its rush to possess all the good things that progress is making available and is derailed by its own momentum, the fatal convulsions that accompany the birth of a new world."

His Masterpiece, by Emile Zola

About the Author ?mile Zola was a French writer who is recognized as an exemplar of literary naturalism and for his contributions to the development of theatrical naturalism. Zola s best-known literary works include the twenty-volume Les Rougon-Macquart, an epic work that examined the influences of violence, alcohol and prostitution on French society through the experiences of two families, the Rougons and the Macquarts. Other remarkable works by Zola include Contes ? Ninon, Les Myst?res de Marseille, and Th?r?se Raquin.

In addition to his literary contributions, Zola played a key role in the Dreyfus Affair of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. His newspaper article J Accuse accused the highest levels of the French military and government of obstruction of justice and anti-semitism, for which he was convicted of libel in 1898. After a brief period of exile in England, Zola returned to France where he died in 1902. ?mile Zola is buried in the Panth?on alongside other esteemed literary figures Victor Hugo and Alexandre Dumas.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. The Masterpiece from a french point of view By A Customer Hi, first, you have to know that I have read the book in french so I got the direct style from Emile Zola. I've noticed that there's nothing about the Masterpiece by Zola. It's a story of a painter, who is creating one of the new styles of the 19th, and his difficulties with other painters. It's the explicit subject, but this book is mostly about the passion some artists have in life, and some others who've accepted the rules of society. You will experiment in this book the delight of creation but also the destruction of the human in creation. If you're interested in impressionism you should read this book, the historic point of view will interest you a lot since the writer has been a witness of great french painters, but if u get the message of this book, which is the essence of life, u'll really have a wonderful moment reading it.Sorry for my bad english.Sincerely,GaFIR777(Hope you'll read it Oracle242)

The endless lists of Paris streets grow tiresome, however, and the eccentricities of the Parisian artists lose their charm after a while. Not my favorite Zola.

About the Author

Hey my name is Gayle Atherton and I have been studying and teaching meditation for more than 30 years.

I really connect to Adult Coloring books because 10 years ago I hit a stress point in my life due to "overworking".

At that time I needed to take up creative art to compensate for the imbalance - just so I could do something different other than my main job - which was consuming me (even though I love my job).

Coloring Books calm the spirit and help us to be re-center ourselves and re-gain our balance.

Coloring creates a relaxing enjoyable creative and mindful experience. You are free to be the thoughtful caring person you already are and express it in a really positive way.

In particular coloring books for adults are especially good for people who cannot relax or reduce their stress using the usual meditation techniques or breathing exercises because it allows them to be simply absorbed in their own world comfortably - without effort and distraction. Coloring books also gives you a little time out to recuperate from the constant stress of working and a busy life.

Coloring Books are an invaluable addition to our planet at the moment and this is why I have begun to create Adult Coloring Books. Actually creating and developing the artwork myself is also a very therapeutic exercise.

With the Adult Coloring Book by Angelight I am also inviting you to attend my free meditation lessons to accompany the book.

Being peaceful and calm is not a weekend option... it's essential to living a positive, happy and good life.

So if you'd like to join me you'll find the details at the back of the book. And of course you are free to come and go as you please...

Jennie Gerhardt, by Theodore Dreiser

Review

"The best American novel I have ever read, with the lonesome but Himalayan exception of Huckleberry Finn."—H. L. Mencken

"For Dreiser, Jennie Gerhardt was a good career move. Now, with this Pennsylvania edition, we know that it is also a great novel."—New York Times

From the Publisher James L. W. West III is Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of English at Penn State University. He is the author of many books, including American Authors and the Literary Marketplace since 1900, an expansion of his 1983 Rosenbach Lectures at the University of Pennsylvania, and The Making of This Side of Paradise, both available from the University of Pennsylvania Press. His most recent books are William Styron: A Life (1998) and The Perfect Hour: The Romance of F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ginevra King (2005).

From the Back Cover Focusing on Jennie Gerhardt, a poor young girl in Columbus, Ohio, Theodore Dreiser's novel depicts her inadvertently defying a host of conventions-of class, gender, family, and religion. Over a quarter of a century she is repeatedly victimized by circumstance, temperament, and most particularly the fact of her sex. Yet the triumph of the book lies in her incorrigibly loving nature. Cast out by society as well as by her family, she none the less fosters a far deeper understanding of relationships than anyone else. It is no surprise that she was her author's favourite heroine.

Jennie Has-hardt By Jana Truly, Jenny Gerhardt has a lot of heart.Though she makes some bad decisions and often lacks the confindence that could have reinvented her in the magnified binocular-eyes of society, Dreiser's love for the character shines and we, the readers, grow to love her also. Several glimmers of why Dreiser is the transcendent novelist that he is peek out from the fast moving story of Jennie Gerhardt."She was not, like so many, endeavoring to put the ocean into a tea-cup or to tie up the shifting universe in a mess of strings called law.""The loveliness of seventeen is centuries old. That is why passion is almost sad.""So this little household drifted along quietly and dreamily indeed, but always with the undercurrent of feeling which ran so still because it was so deep."I admit to you, I have never been very interested by the sometimes dry prose offered in the writing of earlier time periods. But Dreiser seems to me a rare gem in the world of early 20th century fiction. However, the one reason I am writing a 4 star review is because of the ending of this novel. After several mini-climaxes, the book ends. --just like that. With a grim display of "if only". And although most, if not all of us, identify with that theme, I felt like I MUST have read 366 pages for something other than that. However, I would still recommend it. It is a delicate work of art whose power and beauty cannot be denied.

The reason why I selected it was because in the film, American Splendor, Harvey Pekar mentions the novel and he's shown finishing it in the film. I wanted to know and feel what Mr. Pekar felt. And I believe I did. The tragedy of Jennie Gerhardt's life resonated with me. I was anguished over Jenny's loneliness and the fact that Lester could never make up his mind to marry her. I cried. Dreiser's observation of turn of the century high society and their view of the poor as pariahs still seems relevant today. We still live in a time of social and financial inequality.Dreiser's writing style is definitely not modern. And his phrasing is not structured in the active voice. It's more long-winded. You need to enjoy his descriptions and his philosophical speculations that do make the novel more meaningful. You can't take the social critic out of Dreiser. If you can make time in your life to sit down and read this novel, you will come away having been moved by Dreiser's heartfelt portrayal of the human condition. May each and everyone one of you be as lucky to love as deeply as Jennie did.

Marsh It seems each time I finish one of Dresier's works I think it is my favorite. Such is the case with Jennie Gerhardt, at least until my next Dresier. This heart-wrenching saga takes the reader through Jennie's life from cleaning houses with her mother, bearing a child by a US Senator and living and loving a man beyond her society class. Lester (the man she loves after the Senator), for his part, is unwilling to marry Jennie and is cut-off from the family and it's millions for loving someone "below" his class in society. Jennie remains true to herself, following her heart and the dicates of a harsh scoiety. She makes amendes with her father and is the only child to nurture him through his final days and death. She takes her daughter away from Chicago and leaves Lester so he can reclaim his family fortune. Her daughter dies, leaving her alone but the strength of Jennie's character comes through when she adopts orphans, for if she isn't nurturing she isn't living. Dreiser drives home his theme of fate and how some can dictate it while others are a slave to it. But even this distinction isn't black and white. Lester seems not to care what fate has in store for him until he takes it into his onw hands and marries the society girl he arguably should have married before he hooked up with Jennie. Alas, Jennie never mastered her fate. She was punished for loving two men from the upper-crust of scoiety instead of taking the crusts that high-living classes would toss her.

Framley Parsonage, by Anthony Trollope

About the Author Anthony Trollope was a Victorian-era English author best known for his satirical novel The Way We Live Now, a criticism of the greed and immorality he witnessed living in London. Trollope was employed as a postal surveyor in Ireland when he began to take up writing as a serious pursuit, publishing four novels on Irish subjects during his years there. In 1851 Trollope was travelling the English countryside for work when was inspired with the plot for The Warden, the first of six novels in what would become his famous The Chronicles of Barsetshire series. Trollope eventually settled in London and over the next thirty years published a prodigious body of work, including Barsetshire novels such as Barchester Towers and Doctor Thorne, as well as numerous other novels and short stories. Trollope died in London 1882 at the age of 67.

By JAD If you shy away from Victorian novels because you had to read A TALE OF TWO CITIES in high school, it is time to give these treasures another try. Admit it, you are a bit older now. So are these books by Dickens, Disraeli, Thackary, Austen, the Bronte sisters, and, yes, my personal favorite, the great man himself, Anthony Trollope. Why read something that was written a century and a half ago? Because Trollope knew more about the human psyche than Freud and Jung put together, and wrote about it not with a clinician's jaundiced eye, but with incredible tenderness and love. And entertainingly, to boot!If you have been reading the Jan Karon novels about life in a small North Carolina highlands town, as it revolves around an Episcopal priest named Father Tim and his colorful parishioners, well!--this is where it all began. A book version of finding the source of the Nile.Trollope began what Karon has revised and restyled so engagingly. Trollope invented the "church and town" novel, with what have become known as his Bartchester Series of novels, all centering around the doings of a fictitious cathedral town and its outlying countryside. Not the first in the series, (it is the fourth but perhaps the best), FRAMLEY PARSONAGE traces the faith, home and political lives of a number of intertwining families. Here you will find love, ambition, political maneuvering, gambling debts, pretension, humility, envy, forgiveness, hate, romance. If it sounds like a slice of modern life-it is. We and the Victorians are so much alike; the human condition does not change. In this delightful mix of clerical, political and romantic intrigue, you will meet everyone from the alarmingly meddlesome bishop's wife, Mrs. Proudie, to the original dizzy blond, Griselda Grantly. All set in the green countryside and the bustling streets of London. The story centers around the bright, popular pastor, Mark Robarts and his charming wife, but it is his sister, Lucy, who will capture your heart as perhaps the loveliest of heroines in any novel.I hope you are intrigued enough to be convinced that there is more to Nineteenth Century British Literature than SILAS MARNER. Moreover, I hope you will read this and the other Trollope works. You may recall that in addition to being one of the most successful and acclaimed novelist of all times, Trollope was also a successful and acclaimed civil servant-his "day job" was with the British postal system-he invented the corner mailbox. His more than 40 novels and outstanding autobiography were written in his very disciplined "spare time" in which he produced a specific number of pages every morning before departing punctually for his office. Not only a genius of time management, Trollope was and is a guardian of the human heart. What? You say you would rather start at the beginning of the Bartchester series? By all means! But if you do not, try FRAMLY PARSONAGE first. Dip your toe in there-for you cannot dip your toe into any of his books without emerging the better, having done so.If you find this review helpful you might want to read some of my other reviews, including those on subjects ranging from biography to architecture, as well as religion and fiction.

Wilson Young clergyman Mark Robarts receives a choice parish, thanks to Lady Lufton, the mother of one of his university friends. However, Robarts, though newly and happily married, is not content to settle into the life of a country minister. Lured by a wealthy and worldly set of new acquaintances, he finds himself pushed into living beyond his means and, worse yet, being held legally responsible for another man's bad debts.Meantime the young Lord Lufton has been smitten by the charms of Robarts' sister Lucy, much to the displeasure of his aristocratic mother. It take a great act of magnanimity on Lucy's part - helping the impoverished Crawley family during a crisis (the Crawleys are more prominent in "The Last Chronicle of Barset") - to finally convince Lady Lufton that Lucy is worthy of her son. This beautifully written novel contrasts the simpler integrity, though sometimes snobbish values, of the old ways with the more meretriciously glamorous lives of a newer society. As usual, Trollope has produced a multitude of characters whose motives are completely credible, and his depiction of the different social groups provides a most vivid kaleidoscope of Victorian life and attitudes. As always, there is nothing outdated in Trollope's sure insight into human nature.

Means As a sixty-two year old professor of English literature and a compulsive reader, I have read many, many novels in my life, and most of Trollope's (for they are, indeed, habit-forming), but this one is perhaps my favorite. I have not read it since 1982, but when I open the cover and look at the fly-leaf, I feel the special delight that I felt when I first read it. Like Austen's Emma, it is one of those perfect books you should not miss.

"I breathe freely in the neighbourhood of this lake; the ground upon which I tread has been subdued from the earliest ages; the principal objects which immediately strike my eye, bring to my recollection scenes, in which man acted the hero and was the chief object of interest. Not to look back to earlier times of battles and sieges, here is the bust of Rousseau—here is a house with an inscription denoting that the Genevan philosopher first drew breath under its roof. A little out of the town is Ferney, the residence of Voltaire; where that wonderful, though certainly in many respects contemptible, character, received, like the hermits of old, the visits of pilgrims, not only from his own nation, but from the farthest boundaries of Europe. Here too is Bonnet's abode, and, a few steps beyond, the house of that astonishing woman Madame de Stael: perhaps the first of her sex, who has really proved its often claimed equality with, the nobler man. We have before had women who have written interesting novels and poems, in which their tact at observing drawing-room characters has availed them; but never since the days of Heloise have those faculties which are peculiar to man, been developed as the possible inheritance of woman. Though even here, as in the case of Heloise, our sex have not been backward in alledging the existence of an Abeilard in the person of M. Schlegel as the inspirer of her works. But to proceed: upon the same side of the lake, Gibbon, Bonnivard, Bradshaw, and others mark, as it were, the stages for our progress; whilst upon the other side there is one house, built by Diodati, the friend of Milton, which has contained within its walls, for several months, that poet whom we have so often read together, and who—if human passions remain the same, and human feelings, like chords, on being swept by nature's impulses shall vibrate as before—will be placed by posterity in the first rank of our English Poets. You must have heard, or the Third Canto of Childe Harold will have informed you, that Lord Byron resided many months in this neighbourhood. I went with some friends a few days ago, after having seen Ferney, to view this mansion. I trod the floors with the same feelings of awe and respect as we did, together, those of Shakespeare's dwelling at Stratford. I sat down in a chair of the saloon, and satisfied myself that I was resting on what he had made his constant seat. I found a servant there who had lived with him; she, however, gave me but little information. She pointed out his bed-chamber upon the same level as the saloon and dining-room, and informed me that he retired to rest at three, got up at two, and employed himself a long time over his toilette; that he never went to sleep without a pair of pistols and a dagger by his side, and that he never ate animal food. He apparently spent some part of every day upon the lake in an English boat. There is a balcony from the saloon which looks upon the lake and the mountain Jura; and I imagine, that it must have been hence, he contemplated the storm so magnificently described in the Third Canto; for you have from here a most extensive view of all the points he has therein depicted. I can fancy him like the scathed pine, whilst all around was sunk to repose, still waking to observe, what gave but a weak image of the storms which had desolated his own breast.

The Vampyre, by John William Polidori

About the Author John William Polidori was born on September 7, 1795, in London, England, the oldest of eight children. One of the first students at Ampleforth College in 1804, he graduated from the University of Edinburgh as a doctor of medicine at the age of 19. In 1816, he became the personal physician of Lord Byron, accompanying him on a European tour. There, they met Mary and Percy Shelley, and read aloud from “Tales of the Dead.” It was then, that each of them decided to write a ghost story, Mary writing “Frankenstein,” and Polidori writing “The Vampyre.” In 1819, the story was published without his permission and mistakenly attributed to Lord Byron. Polidori dies on August 24, 1821, at the age of 25, in London, England. It was a possible suicide, although the verdict was natural causes.

Polidori never received more than a few pounds, but the Vampire was translated into over seven languages and adapted for a play on the continent. Goethe cheekily says that it was the best thing Byron ever wrote! However much this might be based on Byron's fragment, Polidori wrote it at the behest of a patroness after leaving Byron's service. Polidori had been teased and ostracised by Byron and the Shelleys. He himself was volatile and had probably had enough of being called Pollydolly. The Vampire was published without poor Polly's permission, and under Byron's name. It sold like hotcakes. The mixture of melodrama and intrigue delighted the public and began our modern obsession with vampires which just won't die. Yes, there's the cliche of the innocent woman, Ianthe, getting seduced by the mysterious stranger, and her relation's slow unravelling of the danger. But it was Polidori's modelling of the Vampire on his ex-employer that has given this book longevity and made it a genre setter. The Vampire is written quite well - the prose may be over-flowery but Mary Shelley's Frankenstein suffers from the same. The unravelling of the story as Lord Ruthven (pronounced Riven) takes the protganists further into his confidences, and the amusing ending, make it worth a read.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Destruction of innocence By EA Solinas "The Vampyre" has a pretty impressive pedigree -- it was first dreamed up on the same legendary night as Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" and the title character is based on Lord Byron (who actually got credited for the story). In fact, the history of Dr. John Polidori's short story is more fascinating than the story itself, a brief purple-prosed tale of innocence destroyed and a sinister aristocratic vampire.A very naive, romantic young man named Aubrey becomes acquainted with a mysterious aristocrat named Lord Ruthven, and decides to go on a tour of Europe with him. But he soon discovers that Ruthven isn't the idealized romantic figure he thought -- he's cruel, depraved and has a corrupting influence on everyone he gets involved with.Aubrey soon abandons Ruthven and flees to Greece, where he falls in love with a beautiful peasant girl -- only to have her die from a vampiric attack, followed by Ruthven being killed by bandits. Even more shocking, Ruthven reappears in London -- alive and well -- when Aubrey returns, and he has some spectacularly sinister plans in mind for Aubrey's sister. The main character may be a vampire, but Polidori's story is less of a horror story and more of a study of innocence's destruction. Not only does Ruthven apparently wreck the morals of everyone he becomes close to (although we're never told how), but even the pure-hearted Aubrey turns into a glassy-eyed crazy wreck because of Ruthven.Writingwise, I hope Polidori was a better doctor than he was a writer. His writing isn't BAD, but he tends to ramble in a purple, prim, distant style -- it feels like the entire story is a summary of someone else's novel, and he skims over the most interesting stuff like Ruthven's actual cruelty or his wooing of Aubrey's sister. But he does give the story an atmosphere of taut suspense especially when Aubrey is trying to escape Ruthven.Ruthven (based on Byron) is a fairly fascinating character since he was the first aristocratic, elegant, attractive vampire that anybody knows of -- he's not just a monster, but a smart one who manipulates others to get the prize. We don't know whether he corrupts and murders because he's a vampire or whether he's just an evil manipulator, but strangely it makes him all the more fascinating."The Vampyre" has the distinction of being the first story involving an aristocratic, attractive vampire, and Lord Ruthven is a fascinating villain despite Polidori's clunky writing. Worth a read, if nothing else for the insights.

I tried some of the suggestions in this book and the house I was having difficulty getting, closed escrow in a few days afterwards. I believe it works through intention and also the more I do Feng Shui, the clearer my thinking. I realize we are all only a few ideas away from millions...Its a short book, but that's better, I think, because, what I was really after was results and it just takes a short bit of explaining.

White man’s power runs through copper wires. When the wire is cut, their clocks all stop, Geronimo whispers to Wylie E. Chatto, a mentally challenged young Apache man. Soon, Chatto smells rosemary—the scent of complicated things, of trouble brewing on an electric stove. Electricity is the first to go. Then gasoline. Then law and order. The Sacred Alarm Clock doesn’t tick. It rides in on an influenza strain called New Flu. It starts with nausea but soon goes to the brain and puts the victim into a Spanish Inquisition frame of mind. Civilization‘s last hope lies in the hands of people who never quite fit into the old world. People like Chatto, who saw the whole thing coming in a vision; Mona and Chris, star-crossed lovers hiking across a ravaged countryside in search of civilization; Karma and Joseph, a pair of outcast teenagers who find themselves at odds with a city full of wild dogs and crazy people; and Mary, who forages for food and ammunition across a derelict urban landscape while avoiding gangs intent on her rape and murder.

By Peggy Chambers In the “About the Author” section of Sacred Alarm Clock it is said that John Biggs is so full of Oklahoma you’ll never get the red dirt stains out after reading it. As a fellow Okie, I couldn’t agree more. After his first two books I thought he couldn’t get any better. I was wrong. Sacred Alarm Clock is an anthology of short stories that reads like a novel, two of which won awards prior to publication. His crazy characters become darker as time goes on and hold you spellbound. Another five stars, John!

An Oklahoma “Olive Kittridge,” set at the dawn of the apocalypse By jazzgirl Once I started John Bigg's latest collection of short stories, I was hooked. Sacred Alarm Clock follows the adventures of an interlocking cast of characters coping with a dystopian world where food, medicine, and human kindness are in short supply. Just imagine Elizabeth Strout’s award-winning "Olive Kittridge," set in a grim and terrifying Oklahoma City at the dawn of the apocalypse. The Sacred Alarm Clark is definitely not a sunny read. Nevertheless, I think readers will find the book compelling and, at the end of the day, strangely uplifting.

Bonnet "Sacred Alarm Clock" is an amazing read -- dark, gripping, sharply-written, it is a tale of an Oklahoma in the process of being devastated by a plague called the New Flu. It is peopled with brilliantly-drawn characters, from the heroic to the truly evil. Biggs grabs us right from page one, and never lets go. If you are a fan of post-apocalyptic fiction, put this one on your reading list!

So happy to have a e-version of this book. As you read about Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy- and of course Teddy- you can't help but smile, laugh, and cry. This is great. Thank you.

It's obvious that Palmer tries to explain the Islamic mysticism with a lot of technicalities and technical words. I do not know whether the nature of Sufi is very systematic and step by step in detailed practice, but it must be because he seems to categorize and sort it out thus. I like the language that he uses to try to explain mysticism, it seems like he's very clear with his understanding, and it's also simple and easy. I marvel at God who is both the origin and the final destination of our spiritual quest which is what he phrases " to and in God ". The reason is in God's saying, " I am a hidden treasure and I would fain be known. " Palmer finally sums up his treatise in the last words, " if we, like him (the Traveller), aspire to reach the goal we must cast away the pride of intellect and boasted knowledge, and kneeling before the throne of God in humble thankfulness for the light He hath already vouchsafed, ask Him for guidance and protection who alone is 'the light and life of men'. " The goal of this treatise as stated by the author is, " merely to give an exposition of the system" (of the Sufis), and that this system is an endeavor " to reconcile Philosophy with Revealed Religion, and in assigning a mystical and allegorical interpretation to all religious doctrines and precepts." Actually, "I am the Truth" in the Koran is said by Palmer as the first principle of the system. I can't help looking forward for the truer knowledge in color and form of Islamic mysticism. Good read.
