Excerpt from Balaam: An Exposition and a StudyIn preparing for this "Study" I carefully re-perused all that had been written on its theme by the great scholars and thinkers for whom the imposing but enigmatical figure of the Chaldean Prophet has possessed a singular fascination, from Bishop Butler down to Cardinal Newman. Whatever I felt to be most helpful and suggestive, - and I found my most valuable aids in the sermons of Butler, F. D. Maurice, and F. W. Robertson, - I have woven, with due acknowledgment, into my own work. And hence I would fain hope that this little book will be found useful to those who wish to acquaint themselves with the best that has been thought and written on a confessedly difficult problem.Of my own solution of that problem I must leave my readers to judge for themselves.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. September, 1653. The last of summer. The first chill winds of autumn. The sun no longer strikes my eastern window as I wake, but, turning laggard, does not top the hill before eight o’clock. A white mist hides the bay sometimes until noon, and hangs about the marshes too, leaving, when it lifts, a breath of cold air behind it. Because of this, the tall grass in the meadow never dries, but long past midday shimmers and glistens in the sun, the great drops of moisture hanging motionless upon the stems. I notice the tides more than I did once. They seem to make a pattern to the day. When the water drains from the marshes, and little by little the yellow sands appear, rippling and hard and firm, it seems to my foolish fancy, as I lie here, that I too go seaward with the tide, and all my old hidden dreams that I thought buried for all time are bare and naked to the day, just as the shells and the stones are on the sands.

Davis Reading Daphne du Maurier's The King's General makes me realize that they just don't have a lot of authors like her anymore. Meticulously researched, this saga of the English Civil War is free from the anachronisms one so often finds in modern historical novels, conveying the reader back in time. Without being explicit, the author weaves one of the most passionate and sensual love stories ever, even though the heroine is a disabled and thought that love would never find her again. The family divisions and painful separations which so characterized the era are captured with heartbreaking intensity, as well as the indestructible love between Honor and her general. Beautiful descriptions and flowing narrative, this is a historical fiction as it should be.

I didn't pay much attention, and probably would never have checked it out. I'm not much a fan of historical dramas. But when another friend said she read it and hated it I became very interested of a sudden. I had to know what was so horrible and depressing about this story. And I have never regretted reading it.I will confess. The characters are less than ideal. Sir Richard Grenvile is a self-centred cad; Honour Harris is a vain, spoiled maiden. Gartred is evil to the core, but every story has to have a villain, so that's all right. But for some reason these characters are real. I've known self-centred cads before and I can easily understand Honour's tireless, devoted devotion to Richard, regardless of what he does or says.Honour is crippled early in the book and spends the rest in a wheelchair. From this confining angle of vision comes a story of epic proportions, a sort of Cornwallian Gone With the Wind. Set in the 1600's during some civil war (I cannot tell which one, or if it was the only one), it tells the story of surviving invading soldiers and the desolation of the aftermath of war. This story has it all. Romance, intrigue, births, deaths, tragedies, and the gothic setting of Menabilly. I cannot understand why my two friends hate it so. It was the best, most realistic, most fascinating story that I had read in a long time, and I felt peculiarly alive and inspired when I had finished it.I told this to my first friend and she backed away from me. She referred to this motion as (I paraphrase) her retreat from a black widow spider. "How can you like that horrible book?" she asked. She and my other friend and I have had many, many debates - I in defense and they against me.But I am happy to be a black widow spider as long as my web... web of intrigue... can be this book.

A most unusual love story By Misfit Set during the English Civil War of the 1640's, du Maurier retells a lesser known bit of Cornish history as an elderly Honor Harris reflects back on her life and love. Wooed by the charming, irascible but extremely flawed Richard Grenvile, eighteen year old Honor loses her heart and prepares to marry Richard until a tragic accident changes their plans. Richard and Honor separate, but meet years later during the Civil War as he is now the King's General in the West as they fight the Parliamentarian rebels - although not all the Royalists think too highly of Richard's high-handed approach to prisoners and discipline. While Honor refuses to marry Richard, her feelings for him are as strong as before and they begin a most unusual relationship as the tides of war ebb and flow around them.Honor takes up residence at Menabilly, the family home of Honor's brother-in-law Jonathan Rashleigh and things soon begin to go bump in the night in typical du Maurier fashion - mysterious comings and goings, a secret door, a mystery floorboard in the summerhouse and..... well more than that, I'm not telling - read it for yourself. du Maurier once again weaves a magical tale, albeit this time with real-life characters. The dialogue between Richard and Honor sizzles off the pages, as does the enmity between Honor and Richard's sister - and boy can those two swap some memorable barbs. The scene where those two sat and played at cards and witty repartee as the rebels sacked Menabilly to its bare walls was just brilliant, as was the bit when Richard over indulged in dinner and wine and called the troops back after retiring - simply priceless. All in all a very unusual love story and an interesting glimpse at a footnote in Cornish history. I'd love to see this one on film - the actors would have a field day. As for Menabilly, du Maurier rented the home from the Rashleigh family and lived in it for some time and was the inspiration for her most famous novel, Rebecca. Five stars and now I'm off to find more of these almost long lost gems to put on the reading pile.

It was Christmas Eve on Lonesome. But nobody on Lonesome knew that it was Christmas Eve, although a child of the outer world could have guessed it, even out in those wilds where Lonesome slipped from one lone log cabin high up the steeps, down through a stretch of jungled darkness to another lone cabin at the mouth of the stream.

Interesting collection of stories By Steve Campbell Only the first and the last of the five stories in this collection have anything to do with Christmas. All the stories seem to be set in or near the Cumberland Mountains of Kentucky from the time of the Civil War to about the turn of the 19th Century. The Christmas-related stories aren't your typical sentimental Christmas fare. "Christmas Eve on Lonesome" is about a man released from prison and bent on revenge against the man who had him sent there. "Christmas Night with Satan" is not what it would appear from the title. Satan is a little dog, who is actually quite lovable. The story might not be suitable for children, however, because it contains a description of the shooting of some stray dogs and a pack of dogs that had killed some sheep. It also has a somewhat degrading depiction of slaves, which would be normal for Southern literature at the time the story was written. I found the three other stories to be interesting local color tales. "The Army of the Callahan" also was marred by the degrading depiction of slaves. That was the only thing that kept me from giving this collection four stars.

MacDonald, but this is exactly the kind of pedantic writing on Christ he usually criticizes in his fiction By deborah I usually love George MacDonald's books, but could not get past the pedantic first two chapters of this one. It is not a story, but a paper he was asked to write on the miracles of Christ. Thus, he is forced to do what he spends his books criticizing - make a dull lesson out of events that were so exciting and so easy to understand, they actually suffer from this treatment.

Smith The purpose of this review is to assure customers who may be interested in buying a Johannesen edition of George MacDonald's work that they are indeed getting the best copy available. The Portent and Other Stories is a rather strange collection of MacDonald's work containing the eerie title story, The Cruel Painter, The Castle, The Wow O' Rivven, The Broken Swords, The Grey Wolf, and Uncle Cornelius His Story. I say that this collection is strange in accordance to the subject matter of some of these stories in relation to the rest of MacDonald's work. Strong elements of the gothic abound quite convincingly. The physical quality of the book itself is worth the money. Like all Johannesen editions (which are considered as authoritative editions amongst literary critics), this book is hand-bound in a hard, green cover with acid-free pages, both of which promise to last over a century of use. For anyone wishing to collect MacDonald's work, this would be the best copy to buy. I hope this review has been helpful to you.

I purchased this book as a gift for my niece because I thought she would enjoy this particular collection of stories -- in his great mass of work there is such a rich variety of fiction and nonfiction, fantasy and romance, instruction and teaching...and the underlying framework for all of is simply and profoundly the love of God. If you read something by George MacDonald that does not appeal to you, try something else, because there is such wealth there and the next thing you read might be the one that you will want to read over and over throughout the rest of your life.

Rowling must have read some George MacDonald By Pamela McCunn If you like the Harry Potter stories or Lord of the Rings you need to introduce yourself to the works of George MacDonald. In "The Portent" George MacDonald tells a story of courage, duty, and friendship with a wee bit of the Unknown in that region of thin places. The symbolism begins in Chapter 1.

Plato is a Classical Greek philosopher, mathematician, student of Socrates, writer of philosophical dialogues, and founder of the Academy in Athens, the first institution of higher learning in the Western world. Along with his mentor, Socrates, and his student, Aristotle, Plato helped to lay the foundations of Western philosophy and science. Plato is one of the most important Western philosophers, exerting influence on virtually every figure in philosophy after him. His dialogue The Republic is known as the first comprehensive work on political philosophy. Plato also contributed foundationally to ethics, metaphysics, and epistemology. His student, Aristotle, is also an extremely influential philosopher and the tutor of Alexander the Great of Macedonia.

"We shall be better and braver if we think that we ought to enquire" By Viktor Blasjo Conventionally, the Meno is of course taken to be a profound work on epistemology: Meno puts forth a devastating "paradox" calling into question the very possibility of learning (80d), which Socrates can only defuse with a sophisticated and portentous theory of knowledge as recollection that is to become a linchpin of the mature Platonic worldview.I believe that this reading of the Meno, and Plato generally, is a distortion caused by the unwarranted projection onto Plato of the nowadays all-pervasive conception that all philosophy must be a sober quest for truth. Indeed, if we listen to Plato's own words we see that, far from claiming to have dealt with a momentous problem of epistemology, he is instead at pains to ridicule the problem and belittle his own solution:"We ought not to listen to this sophistical argument about the impossibility of enquiry: for it will make us idle; and is sweet only to the sluggard; but the other saying will make us active and inquisitive." (81d) "Some things I have said of which I am not altogether confident. But that we shall be better and braver and less helpless if we think that we ought to enquire, than we should have been if we indulged in the idle fancy that there was no knowing and no use in seeking to know what we do not know---that is a theme upon which I am ready to fight, in word and deed, to the utmost of my power." (86b-c)In other words, the important thing is not epistemology or truth but the kind of life we ought to live: active, brave, and inquisitive.I think this misunderstood point is crucial for understanding several other misinterpreted passages in Plato, particularly regarding science. Consider for example Plato's condemnations of experimental and empirical science in the Timaeus (68d and 91d). It would be a mistake to interpret these passages as signs of the backwardness of Plato's conception of science, as is often done. The point Plato is making is simply this: it is good to think and come up with imaginative theories. Now, some people will try to deflate this enterprise by pointing out that these fancy theories fail to agree with actual, empirical observations. These people miss the point. Beautiful theories are an end in themselves; observations be damned. Fools with no imagination think they are being clever when they try to disprove theories by observations, but they prove nothing besides their own inability to understand the purpose of philosophy. What is the point in ruining a child's happy play by pointing out that the stick he is holding is not really a sword? This is all these fools do, and they imagine themselves superior for it. These are the people Plato is attacking in the Timaeus.Again in the Republic we have the same pattern: "we will let be the things in the heavens, if we are to have a part in the true science of astronomy," says Plato, and the truth-mob jump to chastise him so quickly that they forget to read the second half of the sentence: "and so convert to right use from uselessness that natural indwelling intelligence of the soul" (530c). Again the point is clear: the purpose of science is not to amass truths but "to lead the best part of the soul up to the contemplation of what is best among realities" (532c).Thus Plato's aversion to empirical science is not a matter of epistemology but simply a practical judgement as to what type of philosophy leads to a richer and more satisfying life of the mind. Empiricism spoils many fun theories and offers nothing in their place but dry and boring catalogues of facts. But Plato likes beautiful theories, whether true or not, and he dislikes catalogues of facts. So he condemns empiricism for this reason---in order to stay true to the ideal laid down in the Meno: to be active, brave, and inquisitive.

By Lady (Ada) Bug A wealthy young man of English society "escapes" to the streets to find a living on his own merits and abilities, as opposed to the life of status. A recent convert to Catholicism, he also tries to live by his faith and becomes convinced that his destiny is to save a young woman he meets from her life of sin. Can his wealthy friends convince him to abandon the poverty that is slowly killing him and return to the comfort of his legacy? Will he succeed in his quest to rescue the woman from her life of sin?Fans of Mr. Benson's writing will enjoy another novel free from the now _de rigour_ sex, relative morals, violence and rude language. I gave this book a moderate rating because it seemed to drag along most of the time (IMHO).

Schnepp I really thought there would be a different ending to this book than the one it had, as the story line kept hinting at something completely different. So the ending is a bit of a let-down, I'll warn you. Other than that, this was just okay. The plot sort of stumbles along without a lot of anything going on. Benson is better in other places, such as "Oddsfish."

Incredible - story beautifully describes the journey of a soul to God By deborah I'm not sure the other reviewers got the full impact and meaning of this incredible story.Frank Guisley is a wealthy, titled college student at Cambridge engaged to a girl named Jenny when he converts to Catholicism and is immediately disinherited by his father. Famous among his peers for outrageous pranks and for doing what he says he will do, however outlandish it may seem, he decides to take his father at his word, sells his belongings, and hits the road with the little money he has.His journey has several stages - first it's fun. Then it's not fun anymore and he dislikes the low morals and character of the people he is thrown in with. Then, it's still not fun - in fact, it becomes very painful when Jenny breaks their engagement - but he is starting to reap an immense spiritual reward of humility, closeness to and obedience to God.The more things go downhill outwardly, the closer he becomes to God... during this process, he discerns that God intends for him to intervene in the life of a young woman who is illicitly passing herself off as wife to a particularly low character, who Frank meets up with, so that they form a group of three seeking work, shelter and food. He succeeds in getting the young woman home to her parents, but at an extremely high personal cost.I think the other reviewers took this as the entire story. But it isn't. The story is far deeper and more important than that.In whole, it is the story of a soul, and an allegory for almost every deep conversion. The soul begins with a sacrifice that seems outwardly large but is inwardly easy in favor of conviction of the truth of Catholic faith; not valuing wealth, comfort, or the approval of others, Frank doesn't mind giving them all up, and he enjoys his first weeks on the road. So the journey begins with a free and joyous heart. But this period is passing, and the soul is then cast on its own resources - without joy, without the comforts it has given up, and with considerable real obstacles and difficulties, staying on the path requires dull, stubborn persistence without reward. The tired soul must choose again, daily, between the temptation of backtracking, or going forward now that the joy and fun are gone. In part of this process, the soul usually loses something it cherishes and depends on *in addition* to God. In Frank's case, this is his engagement with Jenny. This period too, is passing. During it, the soul learns humility, gains strength, and as time progresses, it receives glimpses of God and the immense value of serving God - how much this benefits the soul who serves, especially when it serves in difficulty, dryness and outwardly unpleasant circumstances. The soul, seeing its true condition of impoverished pride and shallow motivations, now longs to exchange those for humility and stronger bond with God. At this time, the soul may make what seem to be perfectly useless sacrifices in order to bring itself into a truer humility and disposition of obedience to God. This is beautifully reflected in the story. As the soul approaches ever closer to union with God, it obtains not only humility, but peace in all circumstances, patience, and utter confidence in God. Now the soul is no longer tempted to change direction by any worldly concern at all. It has become a holy servant of God.Frank's sacrifices do seem useless if the story is taken only as a story of outward circumstances. But the story is really about the journey of Frank's soul to unbreakable union with God.I've read a few reviews, outside of Amazon, that describe Frank as becoming a priest. He doesn't, nor is that ever part of his goal.I love the writing of Robert Hugh Benson. This is one of his best books. I can not recommend it highly enough.

By Anna Feliz I read this book from my friend and I was really impressed at the many projects that are inside this. I like it very much because the instructions are really well written and the first book was all about educating the beginners on how to read the patterns, how to do different stitches, how to decrease or increase stitch and a bunch of other stuff. I am also happy that this book included a brief explanation of the many types of hooks and yarns used in crochet projects. It actually detailed why the specific yarn and hooks were used in making the project. The second book, I like better than the first because I get to see the pictures of the said pattern. I am not a crochet enthusiast but I love how the patterns and colors of each project played with my eyes.

My wife is already talking about making her own design…which only shows she loves it. I am even thinking of trying this hobby so that I could bond with my wife and be productive at the same time. Kudos to the author for such wonderful book.

Agnes Grey is the debut novel of English author Anne Brontë, first published in December 1847. The novel follows Agnes Grey, a governess, as she works within families of the English gentry. Scholarship and comments by Anne's sister Charlotte Brontë suggest the novel is largely based on Anne Brontë's own experiences as a governess for five years. Like her sister Charlotte's novel Jane Eyre, it addresses what the precarious position of governess entailed and how it affected a young woman. The choice of central character allows Anne to deal with issues of oppression and abuse of women and governesses, isolation and ideas of empathy. An additional theme is the fair treatment of animals. Agnes Grey also mimics some of the stylistic approaches of bildungsromans, employing ideas of personal growth and coming to age, but representing a character who in fact does not gain in virtue. The Irish novelist George Moore praised Agnes Grey as "the most perfect prose narrative in English letters," and went so far as to compare Anne's prose to that of Jane Austen.

From the Inside Flap Concerned for her family's financial welfare and eager to expand her own horizons, Agnes Grey takes up the position of governess, the only respectable employment for an unmarried woman in the nineteenth century. Unfortunately, Agnes cannot anticipate the hardship, humiliation, and loneliness that await her in the brutish Bloomfield and haughty Murray households. Drawn from Anne Bronte's own experiences, "Agnes Grey depicts the harsh conditions and class snobbery that governesses were often forced to endure. As Barbara A. Suess writes in her Introduction, "Bronte provides a portrait of the governess that is as sympathetic as her fictional indictment of the shallow, selfish moneyed class is biting."

Simple, Unpretentious and Down-to-Earth By A Customer After reading "Wuthering Heights" (by Emily), "Jane Eyre" (by Charlotte), and "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall" (by Anne), I found myself slightly disappointed by the lack of passion and romanticism in Anne Bronte's "Agnes Grey". This novel truly is simple, unpretentious, and down-to-earth--and, therefore, far too easy to underestimate and undervalue. The title character is the younger daughter of a poor family, who seeks employment as a governess in order to help her parents make ends meet. This noble act of maturity on her part earns her nothing but disillusion, humiliation and hardship in the hands of the tyrannical children and over-indulgent parents of Wellwood House (Note the intriguing initials W.H., which stand for Wuthering Heights and Wildfell Hall in other Bronte books) and, later, Horton Lodge. For several chapters, Anne Bronte does not do much but--dare I say it?--complain about the lot of the Victorian governess. Though her portraits of the children and their parents were obviously drawn from reality, which certainly won sympathy from me, I wanted to tell her to "Get on with the story" many times. The plot does pick up after the artful and exasperating Rosalie Murray has her "coming out" ball. Thoughtless rather than tyrannical, Rosalie has the most well-drawn character of all of Agnes' charges, which makes her such a great foil for Agnes. Rosalie delights in thinking that she could have any man she wishes and enjoys nothing more than toying with men's hearts. When she finds out that Agnes might be in love with the curate, Edward Weston, she makes every attempt to make Mr. Weston fall in love with _her_, thinking that it would be a grand joke to make Agnes miserable. Yet it is impossible to hate her, somehow. She steals every scene she is in; half the story is truly hers.I am happy to say that both Rosalie and Agnes get what they deserve, which is, fittingly, what each explicitly asked and worked for. (Read that any way you wish--or better yet, read the book.) "Agnes Grey" has left me believing that we truly do sow what we reap and receive what we ask for.

30 of 32 people found the following review helpful. Insightful and gemlike By Catherine S. Vodrey Anne Bronte constructs a vivid Victorian world in AGNES GREY, which isn't surprising since it's drawn so strongly on her own experiences.Agnes is a dutiful clergyman's daughter who goes into the world to seek employment as a governess in order to contribute to her family's financial well-being. Her several positions are described with deadly accuracy--the bratty children, the yapping dogs, the secretly disdainful other servants, the uninvolved parents. All are rendered here in minute and telling detail.Agnes's familial background--and the familial background of Anne Bronte, of course--makes her especially well-suited to describing a local cleric she dislikes: "His favourite subjects were church discipline, rites and ceremonies, apostolical succession, the duty of reverence and obedience to the clergy, the atrocious criminality of dissent, the absolute necessity of observing all the forms of godliness, the reprehensible presumption of individuals who attempted to think for themselves in matters connected with religion, or to be guided by their own interpretations of Scripture, and occasionally (to please his wealthy parishioners), the necessity of deferential obedience from the poor to the rich--supporting his maxims and exhortations throughout with quotations from the Fathers . . . But now and then he gave us a sermon of a different order--what some would call a very good one; but sunless and severe: representing the Deity as a terrible taskmaster, rather than a benevolent father . . . [on leaving the church, I heard] his voice in jocund colloquy with some of the Melthams or Greens, or, perhaps, the Murrays themselves; probably laughing at his own sermon, and hoping that he had given the rascally people something to think about; perchance, exulting in the thought that old Betty Holmes would now lay aside the sinful indulgence of her pipe, which had been her daily solace for upwards of thirty years; the George Higgins would be frightened out of his Sabbath evening walks, and Thomas Jackson would be sorely troubled in his conscience, and shaken in his sure and certain hope of a joyful resurrection at the last day."Bronte displays this same calm, measured, extraordinarily accurate descriptive skill throughout the novel, which more than makes up for the fact that the plot is simple and the action mostly calm and uneventful. The joys of the book lie chiefly in seeing how Bronte renders even the simplest character vividly lifelike.

16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Underrated Anne By Laura Merucci Anne Bronte is probably the least popular Bronte sister for some reason. She actually wrote two books (and Charlotte wrote four) but the only Bronte books anyone ever seems to know are Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. Those are by far the most popular and have been adapted many, many times. Unfortunately given Anne's relative obscurity, there are very few adaptations of her works. There are a couple TV versions of her second novel, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, but only one of those is available on DVD and there are none at all of her first book, Agnes Grey. I think this is a real shame because I love both of Anne's books and because of this, I would say she's my favorite of the three sisters.Agnes Grey tells of the titular character's life as a governess. Her family loses their fortune in an accident and so Agnes decides to work as a governess rather than be a burden on her parents- even though they are against this idea. She first teaches extremely bratty young children (the son is a sociopath who tortures his younger sisters and small animals) and then older, more worldly children. All of her pupils are spoiled to the core, but she gets along well enough with her second family of employment.Like Jane Eyre, Agnes Grey is about a governess, but the two books are very different from each other. Agnes Grey is much more realistic, lacking all the gothic and mysterious elements. Anne based the story and characters on her own experiences as a governess, and thus all the bratty kids are very well realized. Agnes does fall in love but it's a more understated romance with a good man, but nothing like the tumultuous passion between Jane and Rochester. Anne Bronte's books are definitely the most realistic out of all of the Brontes and this one most of all. The style is the closest to Jane Austen that any of them will get, so Jane Austen fans who are not fond of Charlotte and Emily's work will probably respond more favorably to this one. It does have a moral and religious message to it but I didn't find it heavy-handed.

Thirty-five years ago, the impulse which has since been organized as the Zionist Movement led my parents to leave their homes in Roumania and emigrate to Palestine, where they joined a number of other Jewish pioneers in founding Zicron-Jacob—a little village lying just south of Mount Carmel, in that fertile coastal region close to the ancient Plains of Armageddon.

A real life account of the Turks in Lawrence of Arabia By Real Books For Real People In the marvelous film the Turks are depicted as both brutal and inept. This first hand account, written at the time of World War 1 shows the brutality of the Turks to all who were not Moslem. Their cruel methods and regard for nothing humane are visible as the author recounts his harrowing escape from Palastine, now Israel. The genocide of 1 million Armenians is also discussed in references to what might also happen to the Christians and Jews of the land. The Christians had lived peaceably with the Turks for hundreds of years and so too the Jews, yet the Turks inexplicably viewed them as enemies. This book is told with a real life presence, which was authentic and current at its time, not a history written some decades later. It is a short, engaging read.

Along with Lawrence IN Arabia (Anderson, Scott), it expanded my knowledge of the politics and tragedies that resulted in the multi-layered conflict we see today. Evidently the meddling and resource exploitation by foreign powers is largely responsible, especially the throttling of independence aspirations by France & Britain. Not much has changed unfortunately, at least as far as the hatred factor among Mid-Easterners of all stripes. Wonderful little addition to the library!

The Paper Boat is a novel based on the life of poet Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822). Shelley's relationship with his wife Mary is tender yet complicated and his alternative bond with the poet Lord Byron, an outrageous, extravagant character, is somewhat absurd yet courageous and intellectually provocative. The novel illustrates the fullness of the poet's character, a vibrant conflict between imagination and reality, and the radical pendulum of idealism in the Romantic era.
