“Atalanta” is the fourth book in the Early Myths collection, a series of children's picture books about Greek myth. Each book tells the tale of a character from mythology and brings the story to life through the inspiration from art and literature. The books are aimed at 4 to 8 year olds, are beautifully illustrated and easy to read. Atalanta is the story of a young girl who does not want to be married off to a local prince, and instead heads off into the forest to live with the animals. She learns to hunt, run, and take on all that nature throws at her, becoming one of the greatest of the heroes. She overturns expectations of her gender and takes on the strongest of the men- and wins! When she does eventually agree to find a partner she challenges the other heroes to be her equal and meets a person who respects her skills and ability. But can he convince her that he is genuine? This book joins the award winning Early Myths collection. Our first two books were Jason & the Golden Fleece, and Perseus, winner a medal at the 2014 Moonbeam Children's Awards. Our third book, Odysseus, has received two awards- an honourable mention at the 2015 Royal Dragonfly Books Awards and a finalist position in the 2015 Wishing Shelf Children's Book Awards. Our latest release is "Atalanta" and our fifth book will be launched in late 2016.

Review "The characters are larger than life and Atalanta's strength and courage will motivate and inspire any young reader." Readers' Favourite"These are wonderful books, and children do and will love them." The Classics Library

From the Author It was important to write a book in our series which contained a strong female character. Many of the heroes of Greek myth are male, but this story inspired us due to Atalanta's determination and conviction as well as being a woman. However, I also chose not to focus on gender as an issue- Atalanta is a hero and not a heroine. She is of equal standing to the other heroes in mythology, such as Perseus and Jason. Coincidentally, the book was released around the same time as the new Star Wars movie, The Force Awakens. Readers may note similarities between Atalanta and Rae, one of the lead characters in the movie. The figure of Atalanta informs many characters in stories over the years, and even if it seems to be a coincidence, I believe this is due to the original Greek myth having such strength.
