The author rides through the mountains of North Carolina providing helpful tips that I found amusing and an insight into the times, for example, choosing a walking horse, lodging at cabins without dirt floors, eating at a farmhouse that had an egg. When the author lost his wallet on the trail he observes that it was "crocodile, probably imitation". Some things never change, others do, he expected the wallet to be return and it was.All in all, a nice read, especially when it's free.

Seeing the Western North Carolina Mountains on Horseback By Christina Anglin I have to admit my motivation for buying this book, and enjoying it so much, was mostly that it dealt with a visit to my great grandfather, who was a legendary mountain man. He supposedly killed more black bears in his life than anyone. He wasan awesome tracker and guide and led many hunting parties through the Black Mountains in pursuit of game animals. He had a large family, with ten children, and wild game was a large portion of their diet. Although he loved hunting, it wasn't just for sport.Big Tom Wilson's claim to fame was that he led the hunting party that found Professor Elisha Mitchell ,who had become lost and fell to his death near a mountain waterfall. Professor MItchell was the man who first proved that Mount Mitchell (named for him) was the highest peak east of the Rocky Mountains. In gratitude for Big Tom's tracking skills, the state named the third highest peak in the eastern United States, Mount Big Tom.
