Charming By The Reviewer Formerly Known as Kurt Johnson Charles Dudley Warner (1829-1900) is largely forgotten today, remembered for his coauthoring of The Gilded Age with Mark Twain, if at all. However, if you have heard the axiom that, “Politics makes strange bed-fellows,” then you have heard of Mr. Warner, for it comes from his remarkable book, My Summer in a Garden.In this book, Mr. Warner reminisces about childhood in rural New England. With a charming sense of nostalgia, the author tells of a young boy’s hopes and dreams, his hard work, his hard play and his easy loafing, his delicious triumphs and his shameful mishaps. Overall, I found this to be a wonderfully charming look at being young during a bygone day and age, and of being young even today. I loved this book and highly recommend it to you.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Goofy Story from the 1800's By L. B. Taylor Periodically, I challenge myself to read a book written decades ago. I do this for several reasons. One, to teach myself to appreciate a different era. Two, to see if I will like a 'new' old author. Three, to compare methods of writing with modern-day authors.And then there are those funny words. Words that I have never heard before that force me use a dictionary. Such as 'declension' i.e. deterioration. Or 'Thanatopsis', a view or contemplation of death. And 'switchel' which is a drink made of water, vinegar and flavored with ginger.Charles Dudley Warner was a friend of Mark Twain. His manner of writing was conversational. Like you were both in the same room and he wanted to tell you something. He wants to share with the reader what life was like in New England while BEING A BOY.It starts out with a goofy subject: the importance of oxen and trying to teach cows Latin. Oh, and the importance of cow society. Yes, cow society.He talks about the difficulty of doing chores. Is it ever easy? He reflects that it comes down to wishing yourself to be a dog. Because dogs like to run and not do chores. You soon realize that everything this guy is telling you is nonsensical, outlandish and bizarre.Girls, fishing, eating pumpkin pie, planning a barn and the oh-so-importance of making maple syrup. Soil, religion and frogs. Indians, candle wax and monks. *Sigh.* I am glad to be a girl.
