In the dying days of South Africa’s Apartheid Era, as protests around the world call for an end to minority white rule, Cobus Steyn is on patrol with his local Commando Unit near the isolated Afrikaans village where lives. His beloved wife Sannie and their young son are at the centre of his world and his news comes from Apartheid government broadcasts and alarmist gossip. Warned that terrorists will lay siege by bombing water towers, cutting phone lines, and attacking homesteads, Cobus dutifully spends his Saturdays searching for armed members of the liberation struggle, watching for movements in the bush as he clutches his assault rifle. But when a sadistic Lieutenant baits him, Cobus finds himself battered by memories of the brutality he experienced as a conscript in the South African Defence Force. And as Cobus recollects the rite of passage he endured – starved, humiliated, and berated by his military superiors – he reassesses which side of the war he is on. ‘Trigger’ is a story about how brutal regimes maintain power and the costs and possibilities of challenging that power.

By Rudi Dornemann Where war and armed conflict simmered in the background of Linda Mannheim's earlier Kindle Single, Noir, they're front and center in her new Single. Set in a rural Afrikaans community late in the Apartheid years in South Africa, Trigger follows Cobus, a local farmer who must join weekly patrols in the countryside around the village. These patrols bring Cobus' past sharply into focus--his life in the village, his time in the Defence Forces. A tense story that builds toward the moment when Cobus' past and his present converge.

A snapshot of the end of the apartheid era, from within the ranks By terrykit Set in apartheid-era South Africa, "Trigger" first deftly humanizes a character we would assume to be "the enemy" - a young white draftee on the wrong side of history - and then shows him struggle to keep even a wisp of that humanity as he's methodically punished for any decent impulse. Mannheim juxtaposes casual, ingrained racism and Full Metal Jacket brutality with a touchingly awkward love story and gentle scenes of young fatherhood for a complex portrait of a complex time.

Linda Mannheim: deeper and more deeply surprising each time By Kenneth Weaver An impressive use of the writer's art: “Trigger” pulls the reader in from the first sentence, creating suspense in the truest sense of the term. The precise, densely accurate, almost humble (in being so true to life) yet vivid details and insights into remote rural and military culture in South Africa's hinterlands bring an “unarticulated” place into strong relief. The quiet buildup of feeling for the story's few characters works like music. The ending is a complete surprise.
