About the Author Allison Drennan, author of the eagerly anticipated debut novel, A Guide To a Happier Life, lives in Bellingham, Washington with two elderly cats. Allison started writing what could be called short stories at age twelve, and has been developing her craft ever since. She loves travel and adventure, and this is reflected in her writing. She is also an artist, the second youngest of five children, and an amateur cook. She grew up in Anchorage, Alaska, but has traveled all over the world, and even lived abroad. Most recently she had the opportunity to go trekking in the mountains of Bhutan, a place that she hopes to visit again. But her first love is the American southwest, with it's broad skies and sprawling deserts.

By Amazon Customer The loving, vivid way the desert is detailed on the page and the eccentric, somewhat broken charm of Ray Kowalski make the story catch and hold. This is one of those books that makes me want to sit down and discuss it with someone else who has read it.
3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Worth Every Sentence By Nick J A Guide to a Happier Life may or may not end up being what you expected, but you won't really care by the end. That's actually a good thing. Early on, the book switches between the immediacy of Liz's new assignment and the buildup of how she got to it. The balance keeps the pace moving, without being exhausting, and provides a picture of the characters that gets you thoroughly invested. Without giving too much away, it also does a wonderful job of keeping the excitement up when things go awry and simultaneously bombards you with every question of life, society, and what makes the world go round. What comes out on the other side is a joyful read that was worth every bit of the ride.

The ending was a bit unexpected (to me, at least), but I liked the way the author wrapped everything up.
