Rettke The Black Star is a criminal mastermind with no Robin Hoodish tendencies but with great organizational skills and considerable panache. Attempting to foil his nefarious plans are gentleman adventurer Roger Verbeck and his reformed criminal sidekick Muggs. Verbeck is no Sherlock Holmes or Charlie Chan but he has his moments and he is reasonably clever and very tenacious. There's no great character development - it's not that kind of a story - but there's plenty of plot and counterplot and move and countermove. If after reading the story, you want more in the same style, there's a sequel that's just as good in my view. The writing is fine and the style is high-end pulpish. I found it very enjoyable.

This Book Was Too Rushed For Me By Sarah53121 I was given a copy of Broken Flowers from NetGalley for an honest review and this is my review.I am really torn about this book. For me there is a lot of potential here but it was not taken advantage of and the book was rushed and did not flow very well for me and that drove me nuts. I wish the book would have been a bit longer and been written more in depth. To me the book was choppy and written in what I would call a dumb down level to patronize the reader. I also felt the writer was trying to write in a below his age level and it really showed. When I saw how old he was I feel he should have wrote about older people because I really did not feel he was connecting with the younger people he was writing and the whole book was rushed and it was frankly a hot mess.The story as I said has the potential to be great but it was rushed. The reader did not have a chance to get to really know any of the charters all that well. The doctor was nuts in her own right and the things she did to the teenagers was never really explained why except for briefly towards the end of the book. Then after Susie ended her life how the parties dealt with that and the climax to the was a neat bow for the author because he did not have to clean up the mess that he made with what was going on with everyone in the book but it really gave no closure to the readers.I can honestly say the author had great idea but instead of taking his time and running with it I had the feeling he just wanted rush to the end of the book that ruined it for me. For the first time ever I have changed a review and rewritten after thinking about it after thinking about it after sleeping on it. I just could not give it the rating I had because this book needs work so I am giving it two out of five stars.

Humphrey I'd like to thank the author for providing a copy of Broken Flowers in exchange for an honest review.I was very surprised by how much I liked this little book! I'd consider it more of a novella due to its length (comes in at 92 pages) but it packed the punch of a full story. The writing was beautiful and gave a poetic feeling to the reading experience. The content of the novel deals with drug abuse, rape, and retribution, subjects that have always fascinated me. The author includes an introduction explaining his own experience with addiction and overcoming it, which I found very inspirational. He also included and encouragement at the end to be involved, if not overly so, in our kid's lives. I was very impressed with how much power was behind such a short story. It was a great read with a good bit of suspense and was easy to follow. I would love to see a full length novel from Howard A. Finkelstein next! Thank you again for this delicious nugget.

Only 89 pages, remedial reading, lacking in detail By Brooklynn 101 When I first heard about the book I was very excited to get it, that excitement faded quickly when I saw that the book I just paid $20.00 for was only 89 pages. The book had amazing potential, especially given the number of addicted individuals and families we currently have. The book was very poorly written, and quite frankly remedial at best. Due to the lack of back story it was very hard to connect with the characters, instead I was left to try and connect the dots as the chapters jumped back and forth. If you are going to purchase this "book" please save yourself some money and get the kindle $5.99 version. It is never a good idea to cram what should have/could have been easily a 300 page book into 89 pages.

Rockefeller has authored previous books on cultivating Cannabis, and this book seeks to invite his readership to learn more about modern healthcare's clinical application of Cannabis use. While he provides extensive historical references to it's use by early humans and throughout previous millennia, endocannabinoid science indicates that this publication's subtitle is misleading in it's proclamation: "The Breakthrough Solution to 'Cure' Diseases".Even under the research constraints imposed by Cannabis prohibition, twenty-first century endocannabinoid science finally is realizing an enormous potential for its use to 'treat' many human diseases, but this is significantly different from any ability to 'cure' diseases. The misunderstanding of the words 'curative' versus 'therapeutic' might attribute to an innocent editorial oversight, but poorly chosen title words and the resulting hype to attract readers legitimately seeking "breakthrough solutions to cure" their diseases seems disingenuous. Positive anecdotal reports are usually heartfelt and sincere, but often are unwittingly misguided in that they share naive optimism that Cannabis in of itself is curative.Supporting science contrast with Cannabis as being curative, but indicates that the human CB-2 receptor's activation to restore physiologic balance has legitimately significant therapeutic potential. The receptor system through which Cannabis works responds to the challenge of many disease states, and this suggests that this endocannabinoid system's essential role in wellness is accomplished by offering responses that help us to therapeutically manage to effectively 'treat' these diseases. So historical evidence as well as contemporary science best supports a title that accurately could have read: "Cannabis: The Breakthrough Solution to Treat Diseases".If future editions are appropriately re-subtitled this way, readers interested in following Rockefeller's books would still likely want to read this one.

By Austin Elliott George Gissing is not a name most people would recognize as one of the great Victorian novelists.Though always admired by those who experienced his powerful and original work,he never achieved the wide readership that the critically underrated Trollope has,let alone the perennial favorites-the Brontes and Dickens.Even obviously lesser yet talented authors such as Wilkie Collins,Mary Elizabeth Braddon and Marie Corelli are certainly more read today than Gissing.Yet he was best English novelist(along with Thomas Hardy and Robert Louis Stevenson) of the late Victorian era with his unsparing realism and trenchant observations on class and manners filtered through a nervous and uncertain sensibility.His comparative obscurity may be due to the reputation his work has for being depressing(it is not)and his iconoclasm-he was an agnostic maverick whose criticisms of capitalism,religion and sex still will unease those seeking in Victorian literature an escape to simpler,kinder times.What is most remarkable about George Gissing(and sometimes most poignant)is that he had no set philosophy and was himself unable to extract concrete and assuring meanings from life even as he attempted to depict and explicate it."Born in Exile" tells the story of one Godwin Peake,a poor,socially insecure but brilliant college graduate whose yearnings to belong to the "respectable" world clash with his intellectual rejection of its conservatism. By lazza While Born in Exile is certainly a novel, it is actually a study of the spiritual/social upheavals during 1890s Britain. The aristocracy was losing its hold on power in the media, government and the church to the 'radicals', namely the emerging working class in democratic society. The main character in this novel is caught in the crossroads. On the one hand he aspires for the wealth and prestige found in the aristocracy, yet his background is humble and his spiritual beliefs are very modern (eg, he believes in evolution). His disgust of his working-class family and friends drive him to become a country 'gentleman' at all costs ... to the extent of becoming a complete charleton, abusing people's kind graces and forfeiting his own strongly-held religious beliefs. The end result is not entirely predictable.Born in Exile is a very intense read. It does plod along with excessive philisophical bantering. But the second half does move along at a reasonable pace and, overall, it is a worthy read.Bottom line: Gissing fans will love Born in Exile. George Gissing newbies should first read New Grub Street, his masterpiece.

Godwin Peak By Robin Friedman Just before publication in 1892, George Gissing changed the title of his novel to the evocative "Born in Exile" from the name of its primary character, the difficult, complex anti-hero, Godwin Peak. Although written after Gissing had made a name for himself with "New Grub Street" and other books, "Born in Exile" was a hard sell to the publishers. The book was rejected several times and nearly passed over. The book has remained little read over the years. Yet it is an extraordinary book, perhaps Gissing's best. For all its datedness, length and awkwardness, this book will reward careful reading.The book is a detailed study of its title character and a novel of ideas. The book is among the first and the best novels to explore the relationship between Darwinism and geology and traditional religious beliefs. The book has much to say about sexuality, about the life of the mind, the erosion of values, social classes, and social change. Gissing seemed greatly influenced by Dostoevsky's "Crime and Punishment" and by Turgenev's "Fathers and Children" in writing "Born in Exile".In some respects, Peak is modeled of Gissing himself and Gissing described the novel to a friend as "a book I had to write". Born, as was Gissing himself, to a struggling lower-middle class pharmacist, Peak is intelligent, broodingly introspective, skeptical, and rootless. He is ashamed of his origins. He both envies and scorns the upper classes and believes his intellectual gifts entitle him to a higher place. Thus Peak sees himself, in a phrase repeated several times in the book as "Born in Exile."As a young man, Peak secures a scholarship to Whitelaw College where he distinguishes himself both in the sciences and in literature but cannot decide what he wants to do. In an odd but critical turn in the book, he leaves Whitelaw before his final year because his uncle proposes to open a cheap restaurant in the community and Peak believes this association with his uncle would shame him. He moves to London where he graduates from the London School of Mines, becomes a chemist, and falls in with a group of radical freethinkers and journalists. He has what seems to be the makings of a successful life. Peak is a skeptic and anonymously publishes an article "The New Sophistry" in a leading magazine which criticizes severely efforts to reconcile Darwinian science and geologic time with religion. The various types of arguments on all sides seem not much different from those in current debate.Dissatisfied with his social position, Peak leaves London to try to ingratiate himself into the upper classes. Peak says to a friend in a key passage of the book that he does not believe women need to be intelligent or enlightened: women need to be sexual. And so Peak goes to look for a wife and self-destructs in the process. Peak meets a family with a landed estate, the Warricombs, whom he had known from his days at Whitelaw. The father of the family, Martin Warricomb, is a student of geology. Peak pretends to have shifted his career goals to become a minister in the Church of England. Peak ingratiates himself with Martin Warricomb, who is surprisingly liberal minded, by trying to show Warricomb the sincerity of Peak's beliefs and the compatibilty of religious traditionalism with scientific modernism. Peak is interested in Warricomb's daughter, Sidwell, lovely and reserved and religiously traditional and unadventurous. At first, Sidwell is something of a stand-in for class, rather than a person Peak loves for herself. As the story develops, Peak seems to develop something of a genuine love for Sidwell. And oddly, Sidwell comes to love Peak.Peak lives with tension in his pursuit because he knows he is practicing deceit and living a lie. He is ashamed of doing so. Ultimately the truth comes out when Sidwell's brother Buckland, an old Whitelaw friend, discovers that Peak was the author of the anonymous article "The New Sophistry" which condemned efforts to reconcile religion and science. Buckland is himself a skeptic whose views are rough and not deeply considered but still are similar to Peak's and to modernity. Buckland has found his way to Peak's former small group of friends in London who are amazed that Peak is trying to pass himself off as a prospective clergyman. Buckland confronts Peak with what he has learned and tells Sidwell and Martin. Peak is disgraced and must leave Exeter. Even though she knows the truth, Sidwell still loves Peak. Her own religious and moral views have broadend under their acquaintance to something approaching free thought. Sidwell has achieved a substantial intellectual independence from her family and background. Before Peak leaves, the door is left open that they will marry if Peak establishes himself.Peak is miserable and lonely but he receives a bequest from an intellectual woman, Marcella Moxey, who unreciprocatedly had long loved him. With his financial future secured, Peak writes Sidwell a love letter, the first time he has opened himself up, proposing marriage. After much anguish, Sidwell rejects Peak and terminates the relationship. For all her intellectual change, Sidwell finds she cannot leave her family and its estate. Rootless and alone, Peak sets out for travel on the continent where he apparently lives the short life of a rake, contacts a disease, and dies homeless and alone."Born in Exile" is a study of a modern type, an intelligent, rootless, and confusedly amoral individual, in the dress of late Victorianism. The novel explores the loss of traditional religious faith and the lack of any apparent standards to replace it. Gissing, himself a nonbeliever, did not see humanism, social activism, or other nostrums as providing an adequate substitute for religion. Hence his novels, particularly this one, have a pessimistic philosophical cast.The book is long, with extensive passages of wordy dialogue and of introspective commentary, both of which are typical to Gissing. Other than the masterful portrayal of Peak, and to some extent the characterization and growth of Sidwell Warricomb, none of the other of the many characters and scenes are well-developed. It takes perseverance to read this book. For interested readers, perseverance will be richly rewarded. Although never likely to become popular, "Born in Exile" is a troubling and deeply perceptive philosophical exploration of modernity. Unfortunately, this book appears out of print. It richly deserves a new edition. I read this book in a Harvester Press edition from the mid-1980s with an introduction by the Gissing scholar Gillian Tindall.Robin Friedman

This is an extremely entertaining and to some extent instructive book on house decoration. It is chiefly based on the experience of the author and is extremely personal, but for this reason none the less interesting. Miss De Wolfe tells of the houses she has decorated in New York, of her city homes in New York and of her summer home at Versailles. The chapters on "The Dressing Room," "The Bath," "The Bed Room, Sitting Room and Boudoir" give a glimpse of contemporary life which is as valuable and noteworthy, though perhaps unintentional, as the descriptions of appropriate furnishings. An agreeable contrast to these is the chapter on a "Small Apartment" in which Miss De Wolfe calls attention to the fact that "the 'Model Tenement' offers compact domestic machinery, cleanliness and sanitary comforts at a few dollars a week that are not to be had at any price in many of the fine old houses of Europe." There is a chapter on "Antique Furniture," another on the "Art of Treillage" and finally one given up to "Notes on Many Things." 56 of 58 people found the following review helpful. what a joy By Amazon Customer Elsie De Wolfe is acknowleged as the first woman to make a fortune as a decorator and can be called the first life style maven of the 20th century. Her opinions on home decor were eagerly seized upon by millions of aspirational women around the country. She wrote The House in Good Taste 90 years ago but it's just as fresh and suitable now as it was then.I can't bring myself to agree with her on patchwork quilts, lace curtains or rocking chairs but she's absolutely correct in her advice on wallpaper, paint and apartments. It's amazing how much this delightful and informative book still has to teach us.

Later my boyfriend gave me a copy (not knowing that I'd tried it before) so I had to slog through it. I am so very glad I did. Ms. DeWolfe has a unique style of writing that must be understood before you will truely enjoy the book. She has a wit and charm that is backed by such sincerity that few designers today could pull this level of writing off. The book will make you want to find more by or about this stylishly pragmatic decorator

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Brass Beds, Lace Curtains, Rocking Chairs be gone! By Sigrid Olsen This book was a surprise. Written in 1914 it seems current. I had delayed reading this classic, to my regret. De Wolfe's wonderful book is back with an updated introduction and several additions in the note section at the back that refer to today's decoration. It also includes the reasons behind her dislike of Eastlake furniture--which is just fabulous stuff, especially when re-upholstered in a updated print (the same goes for most Victorian furniture). I agree with her on her dislike of brass beds and lace curtains...but she also disliked rocking chairs...and for that, one must consider she never had a baby...First, a lot of what she said is relevant then, as it is today. There is a big difference though, and that is simply put, people do not have her kind of money...so in some ways her advice has a bit of Marie Antoinette feeling to it. That shouldn't surprise as she lived across the street from Versailles.Her writing is vibrant,and conveys the person behind the taste. She loved chinoiserie, fireplaces, leopard print, stripes, chintz and trellis. Would she fit into a Nate Berkus world...no...but decorating tastes move on and one can see a hint of Elsie here and there. Though I still prefer Sister Parish by far...Elsie is a close second.

Excerpt from Life of a Woman Pioneer: As Illustrated in the Life of Elsie Strawn Armstrong, 1789-1871This little volume was inspired over sixty years ago, when, as a boy of from ten to fifteen years old I was very much impressed by the accounts my grandmother, Elsie Strawn Armstrong, recited to me from time to time of her early life in pioneer days of Pennsylvania, Ohio and Illinois. She called her stanzas poetry and I supposed they ranked well with those of Longfellow and Whittier. I was impressed too, with her ability to recall her lines verbatim if given a word or two to start off on any event of her life story.I also soon learned after she came to live at my father's home that if I wished to play on the grass I must find a place remote from the house, for if seen on the lawn in front of her window, there would be a tap, tap on the glass and I would have to go to her room and sew carpet rags or thread, what seemed to me, a hundred needles.My father instructed me that I must wait on her and run errands for her whenever needed and that seemed to me to be most of the time. Nevertheless I recognized that she was deserving of attention for she was nearly blind when she first came to live with us in 1861, so I served her as cheerfully as a boy of that age could be expected to do. I kept her wood-box filled with firewood, carried out the ashes and worst of all, I had to pull out her stumps of eye-lashes as often as they were long enough to be grasped by the tweezers.I do not recall whether it was her suggestion or my own, that some time, I should publish her rhymes so that her book might be sold in the shops as other books of poetry were. At any rate I carried that intention in mind several years. At last when a complete type-written copy of all her rhymes was prepared by one of my brothers, I thought I would now begin the long deferred task and prepare a copy for the printer, but I soon saw that to correct her English would destroy the rhythm and rhymes. Great little book By AMAZON FREAK Great little book, the overall concept strangely blew me away as I can't believe I have never thought of something so obvious. The recipes sound gorgeous, I have to admit I haven't tried them yet - but only because I have no Mason jars. So I am off to buy some! There are really only three things left to say. Buy this book, get some mason jars and start making.. Brilliant.

It is thrilling and suspenseful. Florence Alymer or Flo,the main character is a very dynamic. L.T. Meade should be greatly commended on this book. It is a great christian book that really envolves the reader. I read this book first and then "Priscilla's Promise" both are very interesting and entertaining. I really think if you are into anything envolving romance or victorian times you will thoroughly enjoy "The Time of Roses" or "Priscilla's Promise."

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A pleasant surprise By Dakota Rain I got this book at a antique store, an original copy for my grand daughter who liked the look of the cover. After purchased, it sat on a dresser mostly for decoration purposes. Over a year later I decided to read a few pages to see what writing was like in London, early nineteenth century. I was hooked immediately and it turned out to be a book I couldn't put down. I will now check out the other books by this author and the Victorian Bookshelf series as it opened up a new type of reading for me.

A build up of the secret but you actually figure it out pretty much halfway thru the book, maybe even before. How the main character fell back to the plagiarism of the person that tricked her before was so weak and dumb. The love between the two of them was also very weak.

Lady Chatterley's Lover is a novel by D. H. Lawrence, first published in 1928. The first edition was printed privately in Florence, Italy, with assistance from Pino Orioli; an unexpurgated edition could not be published openly in the United Kingdom until 1960. (A private edition was issued by Inky Stephensen's Mandrake Press in 1929.) The book soon became notorious for its story of the physical (and emotional) relationship between a working class man and an upper class woman, its explicit descriptions of sex, and its use of then-unprintable words. The story is said to have originated from events in Lawrence's own unhappy domestic life, and he took inspiration for the settings of the book from Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, where he grew up. According to some critics, the fling of Lady Ottoline Morrell with "Tiger", a young stonemason who came to carve plinths for her garden statues, also influenced the story. Lawrence at one time considered calling the novel Tenderness and made significant alterations to the text and story in the process of its composition. It has been published in three versions.

Now that we're used to reading about sex, and seeing it in the movies, it's apparent that the novel is memorable for better reasons: namely, that Lawrence was a masterful and lyrical writer, whose story takes us bodily into the world of its characters.

By Mary Whipple A book which has achieved more notoriety for its sex scenes (shocking in 1930, when the book was written) than for its character studies, Lady Chatterley's Lover focuses on the affair between Constance, the "sturdy" young wife of Clifford Chatterley, and the gamekeeper of the Chatterleys' estate in the remote midlands. Constance, who married Clifford a month before he left for World War I, has become his caretaker since his return from the war, paralyzed from the waist down and impotent. A writer who surrounds himself with intellectual friends, Clifford regards Connie as his hostess and caregiver and does not understand her abject yearning for some life of her own.The distance between Constance and Clifford increases when Mrs. Bolton, a widow from the village, becomes his devoted caretaker, and he becomes increasingly dependent upon her. In a remarkable scene, Clifford finally tells Connie that he'd like an heir, and he does not care whom she finds to be the father of "his" child. He believes, in fact, that he could treat her affair as if it were a trip to the dentist. Connie, yearning for an emotional closeness which she has never experienced before, soon becomes involved with Mellors, the estate's gamekeeper. Crude and anti-social, Mellors has an honesty and lack of pretension which Connie finds refreshing.Throughout the novel, Lawrence creates finely drawn characters whose interactions and gradual changes are explored microscopically. The growth of love between Connie and Mellors is complicated by the increasing self-centeredness of Clifford, whose outrage at rumors of their affair is motivated by Connie's choice of someone so far beneath her. To Clifford, the separation of the social classes is an integral and inevitable part of life. Devoted to achieving financial success even at the expense of his workers, the paralyzed Clifford is depicted as a symbol of unfeeling aristocracy and government. Mellors, by contrast, is vigorous and full of life, a strong man of character who obeys his instincts and stands up for what he believes.Dealing with themes of love, passion, respect, honor, and the need for understanding, Lady Chatterley's Lover is a complex, character-driven novel which, though dated, celebrates the driving passions which can make life worth living. The romantic scenes and language here are tame by modern standards, and the extreme behavior and willingness to flout convention by Connie and Mellors may be less realistic, psychologically, than what would make sense to a modern reader. Niles I did not read this book until ten years ago - age forty for those who count - and found it a brilliant work. It touched on every aspect of life in that era, using a difficult premise at the focus.One reviewer called it 'sexist.' In that era, women were kept removed from the world, so men were the ones who made the initial contacts with reality and their sexuality. If Lawrence had written about that society in any other way, he would have been inaccurate. Lawrence shows the social conflict with both subtlety and brutality. Yet, Mellor IS a lover. There are sexual descriptions which are explicit, but within the coccoon of emotional bondings.The way that Lawrence has essayed the class structure of England in that era is brave and accurate in all ways. He makes the posturing of the aristocracy both frivilous and full of assinine criteria at the same time he understands the willingness of those in power to offer their lives in the defense of the general welfare.Lawrence notes again with unpleasant accuracy the detriments of an unchecked Industrial Revolution on the social structure of the time. He has Constance both witness these effects and suffer the olfactory damage.This is a literary work which has an effect across the full spectrum of the possible. Finely drawn characters searching for a better way to survive their lives in a scenario that is rife with obstacles and unpleasantness. He has the touch of the finest artist working with the lightest gossamer and the blunt force of an ogre swinging a stone axe.This was published in an abridged version because it was felt that the societal message it conveyed should be allowed to transit the draconian (by the less filtered standards of today) censorship of the era which DID focus on the sexual descriptions but could NOT stop the voice of social criticism any more than the same group could stop Dickens a few decades earlier.

47 of 49 people found the following review helpful. Sensuality, 1920s style By Cassie I was first introduced to D.H. Lawrence in a Brit Lit class when I was in college. We read SONS AND LOVERS, and I was totally blown away by Lawrence's verdant prose and by the novel's brutal, uncomfortable beauty. My professor mentioned LADY CHATTERLEY'S LOVER frequently while we were studying Lawrence, and since then I've wanted to read this later, more well-known, more controversial work. Finally, two years after that class, I got around to it.LADY CHATTERLEY'S LOVER tells the story of a young woman named Constance Reid, who marries Sir Clifford Chatterley when he's home on leave for a month from the battlefields of World War I. After a month of honeymooning, Clifford must return to the war; and sadly, when he returns six months later, he comes home "more or less in bits," paralyzed from the waist down. The newlyweds settle at Clifford's family home, Wragby, near the industrialized town of Tevershall.Although Clifford cannot please Constance sexually, he and his wife are intellectually connected; they make love with words, and at first this is enough for Constance. However, a brief affair with one of Clifford's colleagues makes Connie aware of her more carnal needs, of her desire for physical pleasure.Enter Oliver Mellors, the Chatterleys' groundskeeper who lives a life of solitude in a secluded wooded cabin. In Mellors, Connie is awakened to a higher consciousness, to the power of sexual pleasure and mutual satisfaction. Her relationship with Mellors helps her emerge from her cocoon of prudishness to become a highly sexualized being. The affair continues under Clifford's nose, and he is either too inattentive to notice or just pretends not to.As a baronet, Clifford is in a position of power, but he finds himself completely powerless. The mines of Tevershall, which he controls, are dying; and not only is his industry dead, so is his sexuality. He, and his business, are impotent. What makes him so interesting is the almost tender way in which Lawrence portrays him. The scene in which he tries desperately to force his wheelchair's dying motor to roll uphill while Connie and Mellors look on is particularly heartbreaking. Clifford is vain, and he has no use for sex or other things of a physical nature, but he also knows that the only way he can produce an heir is if Connie has sex with another man and allows Clifford to claim the child as his own. His lack of power, and his reaction to the knowledge of it, make him compelling.Unlike Clifford, Connie's other love interest, Oliver Mellors, is confident and unashamed and almost pagan in his celebration of physicality. He's a surprisingly endearing character, a common man with some very intelligent things to say, who isn't intimidated by class boundaries, who doesn't chastise himself for ravishing a married woman.Constance Chatterley is a woman awakening to her sexual self, and Lawrence chronicles her metamorphosis in explicit, sensitive detail. It's suprising how well Lawrence was able to write from a woman's perspective. However, Connie's perception of her ideal relationship near the end of the novel probably didn't quite ring true for many female readers of the time (at least, not that they would admit): "Complete intimacy! She supposed that meant revealing everything concerning yourself to the other person, and his revealing everything concerning himself. But that was a bore. All that weary self-consciousness between a man and a woman! a disease!" It's observations like this that made LADY CHATTERLEY'S LOVER so controversial.LADY CHATTERLEY'S LOVER has probably remained so popular for 80 years because of its sexual content, which was undoubtedly completely immoral for the time period in which is was written. But of course the content is not anything too shocking in today's world of pay-per-view pornography and busty women on the covers of erotic fiction sold in supermarkets everywhere. However, this book shouldn't be bunched into that category, by today's standards or any other age's; I would like to think LADY CHATTERLEY'S LOVER is still popular today because of Lawrence's incredibly brave writing.Lawrence expounds on many controversial ideas in this, his last major novel before his death in 1930. The novel is rife with criticism of post-WWI England and the failures of industrialization to support a growing economy. Lawrence believes sensuality should be the means of connecting with environment, not through the workings of iron and gritty coal. In LADY CHATTERLEY'S LOVER, industry is impotent; but men and women are sexually alive.My only issue with the novel is that some of the sex scenes are absolutely ridiculous, and read like Lawrence was writing them merely for the shock factor. His language is often unnecessarily crude, and the whole "John Thomas" and "Lady Jane" thing is just silly. However, this ridiculousness is balanced nicely with some beautiful, sensual descriptions: Connie's first orgasm, the use of twined flowers to symbolize purity in love, the beautiful language Mellors uses in his letter to Connie at the end of the novel: "I love the chastity now that it flows between us. It is like fresh water and rain...like a river of cool water in my soul."It's undeniable that Lawrence's prose is absolutely intoxicating and exciting, and he proves it again and again in the pages of this novel, written even as his life was ending. And that's what makes LADY CHATTERLEY'S LOVER memorable: not the sex, but the words used to describe the sex. LADY CHATTERLEY'S LOVER is an intimate look at love and sex, a novel whose popularity has remained for 80 years--and probably will remain far into the future, and rightfully so.
