The Executioner’s Race... A female calligrapher in Ottoman Istanbul is condemned to death and imprisoned for turning holy prayers into faces and animals, for “reassembling the word of God.” Her only chance at life—a privilege rarely granted to a woman—is to win a race against a bostanci, one of the Sultan’s guards and executioners. Seven years later, in 1841, a man named Andersen travels to Istanbul and learns of the calligrapher Zeynep from a Turkish florist. Andersen, who is to become a great name in nineteenth century literature, sets out to tell the tale of the calligrapher and uncover the outcome of her story. What happened to Zeynep, and is the florist telling him everything he knows? The Executioner’s Race is a cleverly wrought and intriguing puzzle of a tale.

Mr. Bynom took me on a journey to 19th century Istanbul, where I -- like Hans Christian Andersen, who is a key character in the book book -- was an observer of a land of which I previously knew embarrassing little about. "The Executioner's Race" is the story of a female calligrapher who is sentenced to death for “reassembling the word of God."If you like stories that take you to new lands, and if you like tales that are revealed with lovely patience, you'll love Mr. Bynom's book. His descriptions are exquisite, bringing vivid images of tulips and temple interiors and Arabic script to life. I always love stories that teach me about work, and I enjoyed learning about gardening, the history of tulips in Turkey, and the painstaking craft of calligraphy, especially when that craft is imbued with "baraka", or spiritual force.Along the way, I learned that not all dervishes are whirling; some of them are more like roving therapists for the depressed and those who've lost their way. Bynom's dervishes, who come in green, blue, and so we are led to believe, red, are a generous lot, kind enough to spare the inside of a cannon to a weary traveler.Having just read the last page and closed the book, I'm just beginning to rehash and relish the details, and, as I should when at the mercy of a fine storyteller, trying to reconcile fact, fiction, and wonder.Buy the book.
