An ambitious novel by one of America's foremost fiction writers, rediscovered and with an introduction by Michael Chabon.

A delightful literary rediscovery by the National Book Award-nominated Macdonald Harris, HERMA is the colorful, fanciful, and moving story of a willful young opera singer at the turn of the century. As a child in Southern California in the late 1900s, Herma exhibits an incredible talent for vocal mimicry. Her gift will eventually take her from the choir of her country church to the Paris Opera, thanks in no small part to the machinations of her daredevil agent, Fred Hite. It is an opulent rags-to-riches tale full of excitement, sexual intrigue, and decadence, and features cameos by Puccini and Proust, among others. Herma and Fred are glamorous and adventuresome guides to turn of the century San Francisco and Paris, but there's a secret at the heart of their intimate relationship. This twinned hero and heroine pair and the profound connection between them makes HERMA the most ambitious novel in the repertoire of one of America's greatest and most skilled writers.

A brilliant exposition of the transgender phenomenon By John Joss The late, great MacDonald Harris has tackled in this, his 'biggest' book, one of the great Jungian mysteries of the animus and anima, the longing for completion by men and women through meeting their soul mates, their 'other halves.' Herma is a budding opera singer, Fred Hite her agent. Integrate the two names and you discover the book's inner mystery: hermaphrodite. Herma is transformed into Fred (and back) in the Jungian mirror. Harris explores the worlds of opera (Herma's avocation) and flying (Fred's) at a level of insight and authenticity that is profoundly moving and instructive. The `two' yearn for each other, heartbreakingly, yet realize that they can never meet. Here we see an implicit examination of the modern transgender phenomenon, which the world in general is only slowly coming to understand and accept. Yet Harris' treatment of this difficult subject is so subtle and tender that no reader, of any age, could be offended.Harris' revelations of turn-of-the-20th-century Orange County, south of Los Angeles (the author's origins), start the book and introduce us to the young Herma and her idyllic life. We see her learning to sing, first in church, then in opera, brilliantly and with a gift for vocal mimicry. The introduction of some of opera's historical greats, such as Enrico Caruso, is executed with whimsical charm. Herma sails through all this with elegance and grace, and in the process ends up with a dessert named after her that she conceives: Fraise Herma (the metaphor for Peach Melba and Chicken Tetrazzini is no coincidence and Harris executes this conceit with great skill). In the process of describing 1906 San Francisco and Caruso's historically correct presence there, Harris captures the earthquake in terms rarely matched in fiction or reportage. Herma, rendered homeless by the quake, meets the wealthy and fastidious Mr. Ming and is nothing less than . . . enchanting--Mr. Ming proposes marriage but we know that it can never be. When, later in Paris, she meets and attracts Marcel Proust, we acquire insights into the French author's environment and lifestyle that will captivate the reader.Fred, on the other hand, is a rebellious young man not only with an eye for the ladies but with expensive and dangerous habits--financed by his `client's' artistic successes, for which he negotiates with élan. He wins an airplane race over San Francisco Bay that includes tragedy and ends ignominiously for him. But his flight training enables him later to fly in France--including circling the then new Eiffel Tower--and join the Lafayette Escadrille, the American combat squadron that flew in WWI and achieved a great reputation there. The denouement is tragic but powerful. This book is timeless in its appeal and Harris writes meticulously. (Note: I undertook the flying research for this book but except for this 'bias' it has my highest possible recommendation)October 2015: Fast forward to the current republication of this wonderful book by Overlook (New York) and Galileo (Cambridge, England) in exquisite form, with some of the minor linguistic inconsistencies of the original corrected (in France 'rue' and 'avenue' do not bear initial capitalization, for example, and French diacritical marks, especially accents, are an endless trap). Harris is re-vindicated as one of America's great writers and stylists, who researched meticulously and executed brilliantly, long before we had all our nifty on-line tools. Once again, highly recommended. The only discordant note is the self-referential and superficial 'new' introduction by Michael Chabon, a former student of MacDonald Harris at U.C. Irvine. It adds little to our true understanding of the great Harris and seems merely an opportunity for Chabon to tell us what a great writer he (Chabon) is.

Fascinating storyline, but lacking meaning By Geoff Crocker It took John Joss’s review for me to realise the obvious that Donald Heiney’s (pseudonym MacDonald Harris) lead bi-gender character ‘Herma – Fred Hite’ stands for hermaphrodite. Having belatedly realised this, I’m not convinced that Heiney achieves a useful portrayal or study of human gender, whether perceived as separate male and female individuals, or seen as integrated within each person. His story is interesting enough, fascinating even, with glimpses of early cultural developments in California fed from Europe, New York and Chicago, grim observations of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, detailed accounts of the skills and challenges of flying early aircraft, the world of opera and music, the beginnings of the first world war in Paris, etc. He includes profiles of leading social personalities in the arts world, specifically Enrico Caruso and Marcel Proust, but as in any historical novel, it’s impossible to tell where the boundary between fact and fiction lies in these characterisations, which makes them somewhat unsatisfactory.Heiney fails to couple his narrative with reflection on the issues of gender and sexuality which he so centrally describes. Perhaps he never intended this. But the way in which gender roles are socially determined, and the extent to which each of us has elements of both gender stereotypes in our personality, are compelling themes. The absence of such reflection leaves Heiney’s novel long without developing meaning, and therefore eventually becoming a little tedious.

Mr. Apuzzo's first chapter pulled me in right in, and I wanted to know about these characters and how their intertwined lives would work out. And the title intrigued me -- in the end would it turn out to be ironic? Mr. Apuzzo's authentic voice and well-rounded characters let me picture each scene and hear each person. I felt like I was there - I can still smell and taste the pizza! This book is well-written and was a pleasure to read.

An Engaging & Emotional Thrill Ride By Scott Schweitzer I began my journey with "True" while waiting for a plane in Las Vegas, and read it nonstop well into the early hours of the following morning on the far side of the continent, and on arriving home needed to curled up onto the couch until I'd finished. During those hours it made me laugh, cry, and touch several emotions I'd not experienced in years. This is by far one of the best books I've read in a very long time.

Excerpt from The Life of the Late John Elwes, Esquire: Member in Three Successive Parliaments for BerkshireMy long valued friend,The life, which follows this, has already met more than its due share of approbation. But the singularity of the character will alone make it matter of curiosity. In delivering down to others an account so extraordinary, I was anxious to inscribe it with a name that might well deserve remembrance. A name of more merit than yours, I do not know; and should I here err, I am indeed mistaken in my judgment, for we have known each other during the period of our lives. We were boys together at Eton; students together at Cambridge; and we travelled together through Scotland. The distance which now divides us, removes from me all imputation of flattery here: and the usual homage of India, will make you think what I am now saying of you, but very cool commendation.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Somewhat difficult to read because it is written in an old fashion literary style. But, a fascinating man. I chose the book because he was hailed to be the model for Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol. But he actually was worse. It was interesting to me that there were miserly characteristics he shared with relatives, which makes one wonder about inherited qualities versus environmental factors put upon him by his uncle.

By bernie Anticipation, anticipation (Anticipation Lyrics by Carly Simon)Long before I read the story I bought the movie "Empire of the Ants" (1977) starring Joan Collins. There I was just sitting there reading the "HG Wells Huge Collection" on my Kindle when what you think showed up? You guessed it "The Empire of the Ants." Well this is not quite the movie but it is HG Wells at his best.As with most of Wells's short stories, he put just enough information in there to get you to speculate and then it's over. Somehow, he makes each one of the short stories feel fresh and give you something different to make you speculate "What if?""When Captain Gerilleau received instructions to take his new gunboat, the_Benjamin Constant,_ to Badama on the Batemo arm of the Guaramademaand there assist the inhabitants against a plague of ants..." HG WellsIn this story, Wells speculates on what made man excel and become the dominant species on earth and could a similar evolution create a rival?"By 1920 they will be half-way down the Amazon. I fix 1950 or '60 at the latest for the discovery of Europe."

The Bridge that Failed By Anne Wingate [...]This is Kipling's long short story, beginning with a poem, showing how the gods of India destroy a bridge completed according to the best English bridge-building knowledge. It shows the builder of the bridge, his distress at the bridge's failure, and his surprise that he is still alive after the bridge is taken out by a flash flood.Kipling was like Mulder in X-Files: "I want to believe." But his early childhood was filled with Indian mythology, and when he was taken to England and brutally abandoned in the care of a sadistic woman, he learned Christianity as a religion of fear and pain. He saw his sister lose her mind as a result of her mediumistic activity, and he had dreams that convinced him of the reality of reincarnation. So what he wanted to believe was something that even he didn't know. It's probably safe to assume, however, that he didn't really believe that the collapse of the bridge was brought about by a conspiracy of several Indian gods and goddesses. But we don't know, and will never know, what he did believe.

Byers I recently purchased this book after seeing Chris Lubkemann demonstrate his rooster carving techniques on the FYI channel. With the help of this book and a little previous wood working experience, I was able to whittle three roosters and a hen from branches collected in my own yard. This book is a tidy, complete, well-illustrated user's guide to whittling twigs and branches. He provides clear step-by-step instructions, and openly shares his opinions and experiences with various types of wood, knives, finishes, etc. As with all really good reference works, I find myself going back and forth between whittling and re-reading the book. I learn something new with each closer look at these pages. Lubkemann's rocking chair philosophy explores what an average person can accomplish with a twenty-dollar pocket knife and a few branches that are absolutely free. I applaud not only his uncluttered approach to this noble craft, but his genuine desire to pass it along to anyone who is interested. An aside: this book is an excellent gift idea for anyone interested in folk art, woodcraft, or chickens.

If you love to whittle, this book is full of ideas to expand that love By Amazon Customer Folks, whittling ain't carving and this book should not be confused with that art form. Whittling is a way to keep your mind and hands busy without watching the [...] tube. The author does a good job of passing on his skills to other whittlers. Twig whittling is an inexpensive way of creating a little give-away art for the people you come into contact with during lifes journey. Materials cost little or nothing; what else could you ask? Very detailed instructions, illustrations are informative and authors advice is invaluable. If you enjoy giving your pocket knife a workout while spending quality time inside your own mind, this book is worth the price.

Although many might not recognize the name P.G. Wodehouse, they have inevitably come across his work. Wodehouse was a British humorist who wrote novels, short stories, journalism pieces, and other stuff, becoming extremely popular over a 70 year career. Today he is best known for the Jeeves and Blandings Castle novels and short stories, but he was also a playwright and lyricist who was part author and writer of 15 plays and 250 lyrics. Both the name "Jeeves" and the character of Jeeves have become a common part of the English lexicon, meaning a valet or chauffeur. It is even the inspiration behind the popular search engine Ask Jeeves.

Psmith in the City, by P.G. Wodehouse

Review "The very definition of British humor . . . and as Overlook continues its reissue of these absurd souffles, you can buy the work for yourself in suave hardcover volumes, the dust jackets as natty as the prose."

About the Author Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (P. G. Wodehouse) was an English humorist and writer best known for his Jeeves and Blandings Castle novels. Educated at boarding schools, Wodehouse turned to writing at a young age, demonstrating great skill at humorous sketches and musical lyrics. He continued to write part-time while pursuing, at the behest of his father, a career in banking, and successfully contributed numerous pieces to Punch, Vanity Fair, and The Daily Express, among other publications. In addition to his literary work, Wodehouse was incorporated into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in recognition of his collaboration with Cole Porter on Anything Goes, his lyrics to the song Bill from Show Boat, and his work on the musicals Rosalie and The Three Musketeers.

While interned along with other British citizens in Germany during the Second World War, Wodehouse made a series of radio broadcasts for which he was accused of being a collaborator; and, although later cleared of the charges, he never returned to England. His work has influenced many other writers including Evelyn Waugh, Rudyard Kipling, J. K. Rowling, and John Le Carr?. P. G. Wodehouse died in 1975 at the age of 93.

From AudioFile Much of the humor of Wodehouse's novel depends on the incongruity of placing monocle and lavender glove-wearing Psmith in the mundane world of a bank. Though Davidson does a good job in creating a properly persnickety voice for Psmith, Davidson may retain too much of this same fussiness in the narration, which requires a straightforward rendering to preserve the contrast of Psmith out of his element. Otherwise, Davidson distinguishes the characters quite well, especially Bickersdyke, the all-business bank manager. (A trivia note for Wodehouse fans: though the later novel, LEAVE IT TO PSMITH, mentions that the "p" is silent, a glance at the text of this earlier book shows that Wodehouse seems to have initially had a different idea about the pronunciation: The protagonist and the narrator refer to him as "Psmith"; most other characters call him "Smith." Davidson's reading correctly follows the text to a "p.") G.H. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. A transition book By Paul Donovan "Psmith in the City" marks something of a transition piece for Wodehouse. Here, two of his principle "School" characters are taken away from the school environment and put into the real world. Psmith is elevated to the principle character quite clearly - a trend which continues in "Psmith, journalist", and of course is entirely dominant in the concluding "Leave it to Psmith", where Mike is relegated to the background. There is also an element of the autobiographical in this work, for Wodehouse spent his post school days in much the same position as Mike finds himself - working in a city job for which he had little aptitude and did not like. Dulwich College, Wodehouse's school, also makes a cameo appearance. The character of Psmith (based on a real person, unusually for Wodehouse) lends himself well to Wodehouse's skill at dialogue. Psmith's unique character traits are generally revealed in his conversation, and Wodehouse makes the most of this - certainly more than he was able to in the earlier school settings for Mike and Psmith. The dialogue does not, perhaps, soar to the heights it achieves in "Leave it to Psmith", but this is a distinctly earlier piece of writing. Indeed, the reader is occasionally brought up with a jolt to just how early in the twentieth century this is, with some of the settings and phrasings.Overall this is a very enjoyable book, and interesting because of the transition role it plays in shifting from the more serious "School" series to the more frivolous work for which Wodehouse is more remembered. The autobiographical aspect is also of interest, and though the historical reminders may shock a little, they are a reminder of how long Wodehouse was writing.

11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. An early gem from Wodehouse By Robert Kennedy This tale of Psmith and Mike's entry into the banking world is a wonderful send-up of corporate culture (and more), circa 1900. But many of the situations are just as relevant today, and anyone who's tried to navigate the waters of a new job should enjoy (and envy?) Psmith's exploits. There are many passages that are absolutely hysterical ("...Mr. Waller was a widower, and after five minutes' acquaintance with Edward [his son], Mike felt strongly that Mrs. Waller was the lucky one.") This book doesn't quite equal "Leave It To Psmith" in terms of plotting or consistent, side-splitting humor -- but it is a very enjoyable read nevertheless.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Funny, but somewhat lacking. By Dave_42 "Psmith in the City" was first published in the U.K. on September 23, 1910. This makes it one of the earlier works by Wodehouse. This particular printing is another from The Collector's Wodehouse series being released by The Overlook Press (in the U.K. it is The Everyman's Wodehouse series from Everyman's Library). These are very nicely produced books, although it isn't clear what criteria they are using to select the order in which his works will be published. For example, this is the second in the Psmith series, and the first has yet to be published. This particular story centers on Mike Jackson, a Cricket player who is looking forward to going on to the `Varsity at Cambridge. This dream is spoiled when his father loses most of the family's money (no mention of how). Instead Mike goes to work at a Bank where, by chance, Psmith, a friend from cricket, also happens to be starting work on the same day. The bank manager, Mr. John Bickersdyke, is their nemesis in the book. He just happened to ruin Mike's last cricket match by walking across the screen and distracting Mike. This caused him to fall short of his century and lose the match. The situation in this book is very contrived and forced. It is true that many of Wodehouse's situations are contrived, but for me this one seemed much more so. Perhaps it was because there really isn't a plot to this book. Instead there are some humorous situations and interesting characters, but there doesn't really seem to be a story until the final few chapters. There are some very funny parts of this book, but it was far from Wodehouse's best work.

Twenty-three Tales, by Leo Tolstoy

About the Author Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy, better known as Leo Tolstoy, is rightly regarded as one of the greatest writers in the history of literature and his masterpieces, 'War And Peace' and 'Anna Karenina', are considered by many to be two of the most important novels ever written. He was born in 1828 in Yasnaya, Polyana, in what was then the Russian Empire, into a noble family with old and established links to the highest echelons of the Russian aristocracy. His parents died while he was young leaving relatives to raise him and after a brief and disappointing time at University, where enrolled in 1844, he spent time gambling, and losing, in St. Petersburg and Moscow before joining the army in 1851. He began writing whilst in the army and upon leaving took it up as his occupation with his first books detailing his life story as well as another, 'Sevastopol Sketches', discussing his experiences in the Crimean War. By the time he had completed 'Sevastopol Sketches' he had returned from the first of two trips abroad which would change his outlook on life and consequentially his writing approach and the content of his work. A trip to Europe in 1861 and a meeting with Victor Hugo, who had just completed 'Les Miserables', which had a marked influence on 'War And Peace', would further push Tolstoy towards the mindset that would lead him to write his most famous works. On the same trip he also met Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, a French anarchist, with whom he discussed the importance of the need for education for all rungs of society. This revelation lead Tolstoy to open up 13 schools in Russia for the children of the working class, further highlighting his continuing separation from his noble roots. 'War And Peace', published in 1869, and 'Anna Karenina', published in 1878, were universally recognised as great works, but not long after the publication of the latter Tolstoy began to slip into an existentialist crisis. Although not suicidal in the literal sense of the term he did, however, decide that if he could find no reason or purpose for his existence he would rather die and so went about searching for a reason to live. He consulted his many friends in high places who espoused various intellectual theories but none of these sat well with him. Just as he was beginning to give up he had a dream that proved to be a moment of clarity and decided that God in a spiritual sense was the reason to keep on, though he was wary of the church and those that abused religion as a tool of oppression. He published 'A Confession' in 1882 which explained his crisis and his resolution and how it came about. Two subsequent novels, 'The Death of Ivan Ilyich' and 'What Then Must We Do?', further re-enforced his views in which he criticised the Russian Orthodox Church. The culmination of his 30 years of religious and philosophical thinking was 'The Kingdom Of God Is Within you' which was published in 1894. In the book he outlined the abuses of those in power in both the church and the government and this would eventually lead to his excommunication from the Russian Orthodox Church in 1901. Tolstoy's main point derived from Jesus' teachings to 'turn the other cheek' and Tolstoy believed that this was the key to Christ's message which can be found in the Gospels and the 'Sermon On The Mount' in particular. This theory of 'non-violence' that dominated the book would make a profound impact on Mahatma Gandhi who read it as a young man whilst living in South Africa. In 1908 Tolstoy wrote 'A Letter To A Hindu' in which he told the Indian people that only through non-violent reaction and love could they overcome their British colonial masters. The letter was published in an Indian paper and Gandhi not only read it but also wrote to Tolstoy to ask permission to translate it into his own native Gujarati. 'The Kingdom Of God Is Within You' and 'A Letter To A Hindu' solidified Gandhi's non-violent idea of rebellion which he implemented and which came to fruition in 1947 when British rule came to an end and India became independent. Gandhi and Tolstoy would continue their correspondence up until Tolstoy's death in 1910.

Take a look at REAL Christian Fiction By Dennis Muzza While thousands of books have been written to tell us what Christianity is all about, there are few works outside the parables in the Gospels themselves that actually show us what it really is all about. In this book you will find some stories that are short and simple, others longer and more complex in structure, but all of them with the signature of the literary giant who after receiving world recognition for his masterpieces "War and Peace" and "Anna Karenina" converted to Christianity and gave up the then popular idea of art for art's sake for one where art always serves a higher purpose. That is very clear in this volume, where the stories simple plot lines and explicitly stated "moral of the story" at the end of each one make few demands on the reader in regards to interpretation, but nonetheless leave one pondering on its meaning long after having finished it. At a time when the term "Christian Fiction" has sadly come to mean catastrophic, apocalyptic tales with Jesus a harsh, merciless judge who has little in common with the gentle Teacher in the gospels who talks to people in parables; preachers, priests, and other clergymen would do well to encourage people to read this book which drives home the meaning of timeless Christian truths (i.e. love of one's neighbor, self-sacrifice, redemption through suffering, the futility of man's efforts without God's grace, etc..) in a way few others have been able to do.

Terrific Tolstoy By Kathy Hasselbring The short stories that I have read by Mr.Tolstoy have been done so well that I feel like I am there in the story and come away with wanting to change my actions towards others for their benefit and leave myself out of the picture. This came through the Kindle edition, and the transmission is so quick I am surprised every time it happens. Again Amazon has done a great job for me in giving a good product in a short time.

He is a master of character, describing his people in brief but meaningful words. His plots are purposeful and crafted with great care. Thus, there is surprise but also inevitbility in the endings of his stories. He includes descriptions of the landscapes of Russia and its neighbors which evoke a strong sense of place. Yes, his stories are from another century, wthoout elephones, atomobiles and oher everday material things we use today. But they describe human nature so fully, its strenghts and weakensses, that one cnanot help but feel true empathy with these peasants and town merchants and religious folks and yearning wives who people his world. It is pleasure to read any of these stories and many reuiqre a seond reading, at least, t thoroughly mine the jewels within.

They offer escape from the stresses of the 21st Century, but are not some frothy neverland fantasy world. The social satire is still apt and the language is well-crafted, delighting me with humor and insight.

The could not alter the line spacing between paragraphs is far too wide making for an unpleasant reading experience. After reading Queen Lucia, I was looking forward to reading this but now will just delete it.

A man is imprisoned in an old air-raid shelter for seven years, seven months and seven days - why? This is the story of Jack “Jackie” who has been imprisoned in an old Anderson air-raid shelter. The novel begins with him in a mental hospital, and tells the story of why he was imprisoned and the effect of that imprisonment on him and all those connected to him. All the characters are in some ways touched by Jack and his experience. "This is very well written…[and] shows great talent and originality" – Susan Mears "Writing that is precise and eminently readable, the dialogue unaffected and plausible…there is much to admire" – Jonathan Butler

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Take a bite... By woodwytch I was fortunate enough to read this before its release, and am so pleased it has finally been published. This is a gripping psychological tale of a man who has been imprisoned for seven years. It starts off in a mental hospital where Jack is being treated, and gradually we discover aspects of his life, why he was imprisoned and by whom. It's a dark tale but there's a redemptive light that gradually begins to shine. The characters are complex and offer insight into both the novel's themes and Jack himself. Jack finds peace through literature - this is highlighted by pertinent quotes at each chapter heading. The experience of his captivity makes us review our own lives. I don't want to give too much away - but I did very much enjoy this thoughtful book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. some you will hate, some you will love By Marilou Hendrichs Very well written book. Read it in one go, although I had to stop every now and then to catch my breath as it is very intense. Characters really become alive: some you will hate, some you will love. The less you know about the contents the more gripping the story becomes. I only knew it was about the diary of a young man locked away in a mental institution, so the way the story evolved was a very big surprise. An absolute must for all lovers of psychological fiction, although I have the feeling that reality and fiction walk hand in hand in this novel, which makes this story even better.
