By Amazon Customer For me, I am not that much into fiction or short stories, yet this book I found was interesting and entertaining. The stories are quite short and end well. The story that I liked the best is called The Widower, loved the ending! If you like short stories and fiction, then you may consider this book as it does not take that long to read and it is entertaining I found.

A Finalist for the Man Asian Literary Prize, a moving and beautifully told story set in a the tumultuous days after the Partition of India and Pakistan, about a wrestling champion and a courtesan struggling to hold onto the world they knew amidst the eruptions of history. In a ruined city after the partition of India and the creation of Pakistan in 1947, Ustad Ramzi is still famed as a wrestler of unparalleled strength and technique. But now Ramzi’s power—if not his indomitable will—is on the wane, while his younger brother Tamami, unconcerned with traditions and hierarchy, hungers for immediate fame and glory at the risk of family honor. The courtesan Gohar Jan was once celebrated throughout the country for her beauty and the seductive power of her singing, her salon thronged by nobles, rich men, and infatuated admirers. But the aging Gohar Jan’s world is changing, too. Ustad Ramzi and Gohar Jan are both beloved paragons of a world that no longer exists, in a bewildering new reality indifferent to their art. Shortlisted for The Man Asian Literary Prize, acclaimed Pakistani author Musharraf Ali Farooqi’s novel is a bracing and elegant story of two extraordinary characters in the twilight of their lives who stand resolute as the society they've known crumbles around them. Between Clay and Dust is an arresting account of love, honor, betrayal, and the ways in which we wrestle with history.

Between Clay and Dust, by Musharraf Ali Farooqi

Review “Musharraf Ali Farooqi is the angel of history. The storm called progress is blowing him into the future. It is piling wreckage at his feet, but there is so much to be done between clay and dust: As this marvelous novel shows, language is to be practiced with the rigor of style; gesture supported by graciousness; ordinary life to be rescued by ritual; and nostalgia distilled into knowledge.”—Amitava Kumar, author of Lunch with a Bigot and A Matter of Rats“A crisp and elegiac novel….Farooqi’s atmospheric prose is spare and lucid.”—Publishers Weekly, Starred Review“The book works like an ache in the heart, evoking cultures and values that, while not necessarily perfect, represented something larger than the self; their replacements, by contrast, are small and mean…. The pages come alive with the grunts of the trainee pehelwans and capture the last echoes of Gohar Jan’s sitar. A story that purports to be about decay resounds with the stuff of life. This is a book to be savoured like a fine single malt.”—Forbes India“Set in a decaying inner city after the partition of India, Between Clay and Dust is an elegiac but unromanticised evocation of a dying culture. The tragedy of a champion wrestler, challenged by his younger brother and befriended by an ageing courtesan, has a mythic resonance, as the characters’ ethical codes collide with the values of a new world. Farooqi’s tale is more moving for the spareness and restraint with which it is told.”—2012 Man Asian Literary Prize finalist citation“Much of the action of Between Clay And Dust alternates between sporting arenas and women’s rooms, in spaces which we tend to think of as repositories of our memories, rather than our histories. Perhaps this accounts for the power of this small, spare book, a novel which fulfils the most novelistic of purposes—to refract history through the prism of memory, and to tell us its secrets and doubts. Farooqi traces the unravelling of their world with near-uncanny attentiveness…. Farooqi’s writing is too wise and too elegant to make this a romance instead of a tragedy. As in Syed’s poem, we are left with the notion that every history is underwritten by the minute, private failures of human beings.”—Wall Street Journal“A thoughtful and emotionally articulate story about people whose lives are changing beyond their control…. Farooqi’s treatment of all his characters is sensitive and subtle.”—International New York Times“Musharraf Ali Farooqi has written a wonderful, quiet novel about how traditions and lives can decline into unmeaning…. This is a quietly affecting book, with a profound understanding of tragedy: that what happens to us is as much a function of how we respond to events as the events themselves.”—The Sunday Guardian“Farooqi’s spare, tightly honed prose and the quiet unfurling of the plot resembles the seamless movements of a dance, in which sudden implosions of violence and unexpected denouements are reflected by a change in the dancer’s steps but are contained within the fluidity of the whole. This sense of physicality and grace is enhanced by a narrative where much is suggested through gesture and nuance. At the same time, Farooqi’s eye for detail vividly brings to life the two main protagonists and their respective establishments….Between Clay and Dust is a fine novel; it never loses tension nor wastes a word and, above all, it is replete with a spectacular imagery that recreates Ustad Ramzi and Gohar Jan’s dying world.”—Newsline Magazine“What’s remarkable about this novel navigating an older world encroached upon by a newer one, is that it doesn’t mourn the change as much as try to understand how to stay relevant and urge an awareness of our part in our personal tragedies and an acceptance of our fatal flaws. Between Clay and Dust glides on understated, soulful prose, an English that feels almost like Urdu in its sensibility, for it captures the cadence of a culture in decline in post-Partition India and Pakistan, specifically, the Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb of the Subcontinent: a shared, plural composite culture and the refinement of pleasure and the arts, of which courtesans and wrestlers are perhaps its most enduring, romantic and graceful ciphers. Farooqi’s restrained prose that creates a certain lushness and heightened mood, is surely drawn from the eclipsed traditions of the kotha and akhara that it distills so wonderfully and with such dignity.” —Asian Review of Books“As far as intimate epics – that beloved but apt oxymoron of reviewese – go, Between Clay and Dust is intimate enough to pass for a whisper in the middle of pillow talk between two lovers. And yet its richness in capturing a culture at the moment of expiry is the stuff of epics…. Timelessness, sorrow, and so much emotional delicacy.” —Quill and Quire, Starred Review

From the Back Cover

Ustad Ramzi was once the greatest wrestler in the land, famed for his strength and unmatched technique. Young apprentices flocked to his akhara to learn his craft, fans adored him, and rival wrestling clans feared his resolve that would never admit defeat. The courtesan Gohar Jan was just as renowned. Celebrated throughout the country for her beauty and the power of her singing, her kotha was thronged by nobles, rich men, and infatuated admirers.

Musharraf Ali Farooqi’s latest novel presents these extraordinary characters in the twilight of their lives. Their skills are no longer what they once were, new challengers to their eminence have risen, and the adoring crowds and followers are long gone. An immense catastrophe has laid waste to the country; its new inheritors have no time for the old ways. Stripped of their resources and their old powers, Ustad Ramzi and Gohar Jan must face their greatest challenge yet. Powerful and haunting, Between Clay and Dust is a triumph of storytelling and a poignant exploration of love, honour, redemption, and the strength that great souls find to go on when all is lost.

Available for the first time in Canada, Between Clay and Dust was a finalist for the Man Asian Literary Prize.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Of a Lost Time and Place By Vivek Tejuja What I love about reading is that you can always been taken by surprise. There is so much about the world that one is not aware of and reading varied genres ensures that probably one's mind and way of seeing things change. The ideas germinate themselves and sometimes you get to know of a history or an art that you never thought of casually."Between Clay and Dust" by Musharraf Ali Farooqi is one such book. I had received it earlier, however just got the time about a week ago to read and devour it. "Between Clay and Dust" is about the times gone by and arts that do not matter anymore. The story could be set in any time period. The author does not mention or give an indication of when the story begins and where is it set, which is what I liked a lot about the book. It is left to the reader to make sense of it.The two art forms that the book is centered on are wrestling (the traditional way of the akhara and of clan and honour) and the singing and dancing girls and the wonders of the kotha (nautch girls more like it). The two protagonists of the book are Ustad Ramzi, the renowned and non-disputable wrestling champion of all time, and Gohar Jan, the courtesan of her times. Both their cultures and so-called heritage are dying and they can do nothing about it. They however somehow uncannily find solace in each other, which is not of a sexual kind (since the Ustad is celibate) but something that is beyond - of the understanding of loss.On one hand we meet Tamami, Ustad Ramzi's younger brother who wants to be what Ustad is and tries very hard to gain his approval as a wrestler and somehow fails all the time. On the other, Farooqi takes us to the courtesan's way of life and the daily routine of the kotha. What I loved is the way this book is written. The language is simple and yet you can watch the book almost unraveling itself piece by piece in front of you.The emotions of the characters are beautifully expressed - from Ustad's anguish and yearning to hold on to what remains to Gohar Jan's submission to the closure of the kotha and Tamami's persistent ways (right or wrong) to seek his brother's approval, each of them are traversing in their own orbits - as lonely as the other. For me the book could have been set right after partition, either in Pakistan or India or maybe even in recent times. As I said earlier, that is but only left to speculation, which I love. The writing is fluid and got to me straight at the heart. Somehow the "beauty of resignation" was what came to mind as I read the book and maybe that is how I would like to describe the book."Between Clay and Dust" is a heartbreaking and marvelous book. Something to take you back in time and probably introspect a little of how things used to be and how they are.

In the great classical tradition there are the modern conniving of fake promoters and building code functionaries. And mercy and forgiveness in great guilt and grief. A great story.

  • Hard Times – For These Times (commonly known as Hard Times) is the tenth novel by Charles Dickens, first published in 1854. The book appraises English society and highlights the social and economic pressures of the times.Hard Times is unusual in several respects. It is by far the shortest of Dickens' novels, barely a quarter of the length of those written immediately before and after it. Also, unlike all but one of his other novels, Hard Times has neither a preface nor illustrations. Moreover, it is his only novel not to have scenes set in London. Instead the story is set in the fictitious Victorian industrial Coketown, a generic Northern English mill-town, in some ways similar to Manchester, though smaller. Coketown may be partially based on 19th-century Preston. One of Dickens's reasons for writing Hard Times was that sales of his weekly periodical, Household Words, were low, and it was hoped the novel's publication in instalments would boost circulation – as indeed proved to be the case. Since publication it has received a mixed response from critics. Critics such as F. R. Leavis, George Bernard Shaw, and Thomas Macaulay have mainly focused on Dickens's treatment of trade unions and his post–Industrial Revolution pessimism regarding the divide between capitalist mill owners and undervalued workers during the Victorian era.

From School Library Journal Grade 7-12-Dickens' satire on the Victorian family and the philosophies of a society which sought to turn men into machines. Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review David Timson reads Dickens's last complete novel with a sense of fun. As always, Dickens creates a fabulous array of characters: the nouveau riche Veneerings, the dwarf who makes doll clothes, the bizarre schoolmaster, and the abysmally poor who trawl the Thames for bodies or daily sift the dust and dirt of Victorian England for a skimpy living. Timson's dramatic talents add dimension to each personality-just the sort of acting that makes an audio experience so satisfying. Naxos has done a fine job of abridging the book (Timson also reads the unabridged version on 28 CDs). Not much is lost in terms of plot and characterization, and Dickens's great satiric and social themes come through clearly: the plight and misery of the poor and the greed and heartless stupidity of the rich. If the abridgment seems a bit disjointed, it simply follows the novel's narrative style. This is a wonderful listen for Dickens fans and novices alike. - Pulbisher's Weekly

Review "Graham Law's edition of Hard Times is the most useful edition for teaching Dickens that I have seen. Its text is authoritative, and the range of contextual documents included gives readers an opportunity to situate the work in the discussions of industrialization and labor as they took place in nineteenth-century England." (Barry V. Qualls )"This beautifully produced edition combines a freshly written, informative introduction with helpful and well-judged notes. Particularly welcome is the wealth of documentary material and examples carefully chosen from other contemporary fiction, enabling readers to place Hard Times within its full Victorian context. This is an excellent edition—clear, authoritative and stimulating." (Kate Flint )

I had read some of Dickens's melodramas like A Tale of Two Cities and Oliver Twist and enjoyed them, but everything I heard about Hard Times said this was nothing like those. This was supposedly just strictly social commentary. My interpretation of that: BORING.But then I read it.Hard Times isn't like Dickens's other novels, but I don't think that it has any less heart than those masterpieces. In fact, Dickens endured himself much further to me with this novel as he has his characters perform Thomas Carlyle's enduring philosophy. The novel follows the Gradgrind family who is raised adhering to FACTS and living in a society which worships the manufacturing machine. As the novel progresses, connections are made and broken, and the characters come to the realization that there is much more to reality than the material facts.Hard Times is told so compassionately. The reader cares for these people and their tragic lives. The story is also told with biting humor that still cuts at today's society (this novel feels really modern), and the underlying philosophy is one which is so needed in our post-modern world. I would certainly recommend this novel to fans of Dickens and to fans of the truly literary novel.

Blankenship Arguably, Dickens could be classified as the greatest of all English speaking novelists...of all times. There are very few writers that can offer his consistency, novel after novel, story after story. Yes, many have written works that perhaps equal any of his given works, but few if any have been able to turn out such a volume of pure quality. Very, very few authors have had such a large portion of their work pass the test of time. Dickens gains new readers year in and year out and there is a reason for this!Over the past 50 or so years I have heard this particular work referred to as "not Dickens' best," and "A minor work by Dickens," and other comments along those lines. I am really not in a position, nor do I have the ability to proclaim or rank this author's work one way or the other. Dickens for me is like any other author...I either like it or I do not like it; it either is a joy to read or it is not. Now I have read this short novel at least five times over the years and listen to several versions on CD and Tape. The best, minor Dickens' work, timeless classic, not pertinent in today's world, a mere political rant? Well I don't know. I do know that it is one of my favorites and do look forwarded to reading it again down the road. I am one of those horrid and probably misguided individuals who sort of make their own mind up about anything I read, and more or less ignore the pontifications of those that are suppose to know about such things. All that being said though, I cannot look you in the eye and state that I have ever read one story; one word by this author that I did not enjoy right down to the tip of my toes. He delights me.The setting of course is in Victorian England and the Industrial Revolution is in full tilt. Make no mistake; Dickens makes no pretenses of not being of the extreme left ilk...a good little Socialist through and through. This work, like many others make his feeling well known. Like much of his work, there is no in-between here. The characters portrayed here are either very, very evil or they are very, very good. The author handles social situations in much the same way he handles his characters in this work. All are exaggerated to a certain extent, all are black and white and there is little middle ground to be found. The Capitalists are truly pigs and the working classes, the proletariat, are all Saint like creatures. For what the author is attempting here, this is quite appropriate. Now let it be know right here that I have spent a lifetime trying my best of completely ignore the effete yammering from the left and the bellicose braying from the right in all matters. I am one of those creatures who simply do not care and more or less chose my own road. I read this story and others like it, for the sheer joy of soaking in the written words of a maters story teller. While the political and social message here is not lost on me, I simply choose to ignore it. That is just me though and it certainly makes me feel nothing less of those that take the political message and run with, or reject it... more power to them.As with all of his other work, Dickens has created some unforgettable, if exaggerated characters in this work; my favorite Gradgrind (who, I must admit, sort of reminding me of my own father), his children Tom and Louisa, the young girl Grangrind has taken to raise, Sissy Jupe and of course the completely obnoxious cad Bounderby. Even the location; the city of Coketown is more like a character than a place displaying many of the characteristics of a human, rather than that of a town or village. Dickens is able to describe these people and places in such a way that they become close friends...even the evil ones, soon after they are introduced....well, maybe not friends, but certainly people you know and will want to revisit from time to time at the very least. The term "hard times," while a good title for this work is a bit misleading in a way, as there is plenty of humor injected throughout the book. Seldom does a chapter pass that I find myself not chuckling over the bits of ironic humor and scathing satire the author inserts here and there. The opening tirade of Bounderby is an absolute hoot even to this day, as it certainly was at the time it was written. And the plot! While it is simple at first glance in this work, there is never-the -less many little side plots going constantly, with personalities created an thrown in here and there to add flavor and spice to the overall story. The author skillfully blends these side paths he takes us upon and before the end of the story, brings us back to the main road. I like this! In many ways simple; in many ways so complex. I suppose the reader will find what they want.As with all of Dickens' work, the reader must at all times keep in mind when, where and why it was written. Time and place are quite important in the understanding of this particular author and to not consider these things, much will be lost to the modern mind.Highly recommend this one and I hope it brings others the same reading joy it has brought to be over the years.Don BlankenshipThe Ozarks

Hardly a masterpiece, but brilliant at times By Peter Reeve "Hard Times" belongs to the second half of Dickens's writing career, in which his work becomes rather more somber and, by common critical assent, more mature and satisfying. Personally, I prefer his earlier work and his very first novel, "Pickwick Papers", is to my mind his greatest. Surprisingly, "Hard Times", despite its title and reputation, contains some brilliant flashes of Dickens humour, especially in the earlier part. The descriptions of Bounderby and Gradgrind, and the early dialogue with the circus folk, are genuinely hilarious. This is Dickens's shortest novel, about a third of the length of each of his previous four. Themes, subplots and characters are introduced without being fully explored. The author was perhaps feeling the constraints of writing in installments for a periodical, although he was well used to doing that. This relative brevity, together with the youth of some of the central characters, make this book a good introduction to Dickens for young readers. There are the large dollops of Victorian melodrama and the reliance on unlikely coincidences that mar much of Dickens's work. Also the usual tendency for characters to become caricatures and to have names that are a little too apt (a teacher called Mr. McChoakumchild?).The respected critic F.R. Leavis considered "Hard Times" to be Dickens's masterpiece and "only serious work of art". This seems to me wildly wrong, but such an extreme opinion may prompt you to read the book, just so that you can form your own opinion.I read it because I had just finished "The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair, which deals with the plight of Chicago factory workers, and I wanted to compare the two. Sinclair's book has greater immediacy. It takes you much closer to the suffering of the workers. In the Dickens novel, the mill workers and their plight are distanced; they are relegated to being the background to a family drama, which is what really interests the author. A third, and still greater work, that examines the same themes, is Zola's "Germinal". I recommend all three. Together, they give real insight into the social conditions that led to the proletarian political and revolutionary movements of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Nearly every piece of writing throughout the book is keyed to the piece of artwork it describes.

I was hoping for the translated notes from Leonardo as he wrote them, with occasional drawings. No drawings are included, although they are described verbally. The notes have been sorted into an order the compiler thought meaningful, but I'd have been happier to see the random thoughts closer to the order Leonardo jotted them down, since to me that would also have provided a glimpse into his thinking patterns. I guess they've been sorted numerous times in the past and perhaps the original order isn't available anymore. Having not read other compilations, I can't say this version is better or worse, but I found it unsatisfying. It seemed there were more footnotes and explanations within the text than actual notes from Leonardo. It was as though someone found an ancient religious text and instead of just presenting a translated version for personal interpretation, rearranged all the verses and then interjected explanatory notes between every phrase. Since the added notes in this work are in the same text type as Leonardo's words, it's almost impossible to read for his words alone. There is no Table of Contents and perhaps this is just not an ideal work for the eBook format. While obviously, a tremendous amount of work went into this compilation and there is certainly value to a DaVinci scholar, for someone who just wants to get a flavor of his thoughts and perspectives in his own words, I found it too difficult a read to be rewarding.

By Kiwi Amazon associates reviews of a book with different versions of the same book from different publishers. Unfortunately for us customers, Amazon is seeing a growing plague of new Print-On-Demand Publishers who are specialising in reprinting copyright-expired books. Such as "The Notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci." Some of these publishers produce quite good quality books, some do not.A classic example of the "not good quality" is the imprint of "The Notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci" published by General Books LLC.The version published by General Books LLC is scanned in using OCR technology (and using pretty poor quality OCR scanning equipment and software from the look of their books), is overall of very poor print quality, automated reproduction with no index, no illustrations and an excessive number of typos. Also, there's no illustrations (which are pretty fundamental to any book on or by Leonardo Da Vinci)To quote a few specifics from the publishers web site:"We created your book using OCR software that includes an automated spell check. Our OCR software is 99 percent accurate if the book is in good condition. However, with up to 3,500 characters per page, even one percent can be an annoying number of typos....After we re-typeset and designed your book, the page numbers change so the old index and table of contents no longer work. Therefore, we usually remove them. Since many of our books only sell a couple of copies, manually creating a new index and table of contents could add more than a hundred dollars to the cover price....Our OCR software can't distinguish between an illustration and a smudge or library stamp so it ignores everything except type. We would really like to manually scan and add the illustrations. But many of our books only sell a couple of copies....We created your book using a robot who turned and photographed each page. Our robot is 99 percent accurate. But sometimes two pages stick together. And sometimes a page may even be missing from our copy of the book. We would really like to manually scan each page and buy multiple copies of each original. But many of our books only sell a couple of copies....."General Books LLC are flooding Amazon with these low quality publications (450,000+ listed under General Books LLC) and, unfortunately, many of them have the reviews associated with the original or with better quality imprints associated with them. The product description is totally misleading for the buyer that's not aware of this publisher. IMHO this is unethical marketing.A general rule of thumb for these Print on Demand publishers is to take a look at the cover - if it's a good quality illustration that reflects the content, there's a table of contents, and when you do the Look Inside thing there's no disclaimer saying you're looking at another book, and they've used facsimile reproduction technology (rather than OCR), it's usually a pretty safe bet. Conversely, if any of these are missing, you're taking a chance on the quality. I've bought a few based on my selection criteria above and they've been ggod quality. General Books LLC however, is a publisher to steer clear of at all costs.

Leonardo's Masterworks By rareoopdvds This 2-Volume collection published by Dover wonderfully exhibits Leonardo's works with his sketches, designs and ideas. If you ever wondered what Leonardo thought, then these are the books to get. The book is set up with the text in two columns; the left in the original Italian, and the right side in the translated English. In those words are written of Leonardo's philisophical ideas, lives of where he lived and his surroundings, his theories on color, perspective, proportion, architecture, foliage, physiology and so many other things that the Great One was curious about. Througout the book and amidst the text are Leonardos sketches, thumbnail sketches, workings of famous pieces such as the Last Supper, some anatomical drawings - and in those pages you can see Leonardo's handwriting which he tended to write backwards. The value and reference is endless, especially for the artist. This edition is reprinted from the 1833 version originally entitled "Literary Works of Leonardo Da Vinci." This is a 2-volume set, which is sold seperately, but for the price, it is so worth the money. Highly reccomended!

HOAR FROST, by Eric E. Wallace

From the Inside Flap Sooner or later, doubt comes to each of us. Doubt can paralyze us--sometimes for keeps. Or doubt can make us stop and reflect. Eventually, it might even propel us in amazing new directions. If we're lucky.   The trail passed through a windbreak of shrubs and dead grasses, and Barr stopped, stamping his feet. Snow had blown into the branches, forming odd little clumps, shapes which looked to him like elephants, ice cream cones, a bearded Moses. One crisp, glittering limb reminded Barr of this morning's hoar frost, which he'd observed but knew he'd not fully appreciated. The remembered beauty of those ice crystals hit him now. He was struck by the intensity of the cold needed to form them. He shivered. The shiver turned into a tremble. When he closed his eyes, he saw a malicious frost growing inside his heart, limning blood red with icy white. Sharp pinnacles of isolation, shining splinters of separation, crystalline tendrils of doubt were forming frozen barriers, a chain mail of ice. Barr felt tears freezing on his cheeks. His throat, fiercely-dry, constricted. Conviction. Connectedness. Focus. He needed all of them. But they were sliding away from him, as a mountain climber, his ropes unravelling strand by strand, slides into a crevasse. And Barr felt his faith surely was sliding with them.    from "Hoar Frost", one of the seven absorbing stories in this new anthology

Wallace, I eagerly anticipated his next creation. I was not disappointed. His new anthology is another winner. This book has fewer, and some much longer stories, allowing other elements of Wallace's talent to shine through. Each story has a succinct title that somehow manages to capture the soul of the story in one or very few words. The metaphoric counterpoints, one of his story-telling tools, are fascinating and serve well to bring every story into full brilliance and meaning for the reader. He begins with "Windfall" which metaphors the process of deep grief and pain with the chaos and nightmare of a tornado hit. What else could more aptly describe what it feels like to have the one you love most quite literally "ripped" out of your life? In his majestic poetic words and images, and yes, even with some of his ubiquitous humor thrown in, Wallace depicts the healing that is possible in such grievous circumstances."Floodgates" is equally powerful in the counterpoint it presents. This story portrays Wallace's complete mastery in writing exquisite short stories, every word filled with meaning. One of my favorites is "Where Morning Lies", the story of finding the true love at the heart of our lives. It moves at a slow place, tick-tocking along with the timepieces that the heroine meticulously repairs, giving the reader plenty of time to breathe in and appreciate the wonder of all that transpires. The beauties of nature are such an integral part of Wallace's creations. His vivid descriptions easily bring them forth in the reader's imagination. Nowhere is this more evident than in his longest story, "Shearwater Rising". It takes place in the Galapagos Islands where Darwin's evolutionary theory originated. The evolution of a marriage is the counterpoint as we find ourselves literally sauntering among some of the most amazing creatures in the world that we can almost see and feel beside us as we read.Give yourself a wonderful treat, and pick up a copy of "Hoar Frost". Light the fire, curl up on the couch wrapped in a warm blanket, and sip a cup of hot tea or cocoa, or your own favorite beverage, and slowly savor Wallace's scintillating stories. You won't be disappointed. And watch out for those blue-footed boobies at your feet!

They plumb the depths of human emotion, seething below the mundane surface of appearances. He weaves a tapestry of narrative from gossamer threads of psychology, morality, humanism and philosophy, all churning in the crucible of human suffering. These are truly marvels of storytelling.

Excerpt from Schopenhauer's System in Its Philosophical SignificanceThis book is substantially the outcome of the public lectures delivered by me in the Logic class-room of the University of Edinburgh, in the months of October and November, 1893, at the close of my tenure of the Shaw Fellowship.Following the precedent of previous holders of the Shaw Fellowship, Professor Sorley of Aberdeen and Professor Mackenzie of Cardiff, and also in accordance with the natural necessities of the evolution of the work in my own mind, I have departed altogether from the lecture form, and have presented my matter in the shape of several continuous philosophical essays. Some of these chapters may appear to be of undue length. As each, however, was intended to reflect to some extent the system of Schopenhauer as a whole, as well as to indicate his views upon the particular topic in question, it seemed undesirable to curtail too much. Taken together, they represent a series of attempts to suggest the significance of Schopenhauer's thought as an organic whole. The order of the series is partly natural and partly logical. As to the justification for the volume, I desire the title to be partly explanatory. I have not directly attempted to give an exposition, or even an exposition and criticism, of Schopenhauer's philosophy.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It's packing true and detailed information at the good price of 99 cents. But why isn't it great? Because even though it's good information, it often starts talking about something else for a while making the book long and more time consuming to read. So if I were you I would think about these things and wonder if you'de like the book or not. Happy Reading!
