Must religion and morals go together? Can one be taught without the other? It is a practical question for educationists, and France tried to answer it in the dreariest little cut and dry kind of catechism ever given to boys to make them long to be wicked. But apart from education, the question of the bedrock on which morals rest, the foundation on which a moral edifice can be built that will stand secure against the storms of life—that is a question of perennial interest, and it must be answered by each of us, if we would have a test of Right and Wrong, would know why Right is Right, why Wrong is Wrong.

The Basis of Morality, by Annie Besant

About the Author Annie Besant (1 October 1847 – 20 September 1933) was a prominent British socialist, theosophist, women's rights activist, writer and orator and supporter of Irish and Indian self-rule. At age 20 she married Frank Besant, but separated from him over religious differences. She then became a prominent speaker for the National Secular Society (NSS) and writer and a close friend of Charles Bradlaugh. In 1877 they were prosecuted for publishing a book by birth control campaigner Charles Knowlton. The scandal made them famous, and Bradlaugh was elected M.P. for Northampton in 1880.

11 of 13 people found the following review helpful. A quick sketch By Paul J. Leach Published in 1915 by Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar, Madras, India. This short book (about 22 pages) discusses five possible bases for morality: revelation, intuition, utility, evolution, and mysticism.Revelation is the word of God. It can't be the basis of morality because even if the revealed rules were appropriate at the time of their revelation, conditions always change, and they become invalid.(She notes that it should be an all-or-nothing proposition: once a body of writing is accepted as revelation, one can't pick and choose from among the rules of behavior it contains which should be obeyed. She observes that most religions do so anyway.)Intuition is the same as "conscience". It can't be the basis, since it varies in time and place, and many evils have been carried out in its name.Utility means "the greatest happiness for the greatest number". This seems good: it is less subjective than the previous two. One problem is that no one has worked out actual rules of behavior that will attain that goal. Another problem is that the most people are selfish individuals and aren't inspired by it to act morally. So it can't be the basis either.Evolution is the "unfolding and manifestation of life-energies". It (she says) is the correct basis for morality. It is not Darwinian evolution, bur she tries to appropriate its prestige in order to claim her basis for morality is just as much a natural law. The argument is too complicated to summarize here, but it proceeds from the vague definition above and is in my opinion not very compelling.Mysticism can't be a basis in the same way as any of the above, because it provides guidance only to the individual mystic.

Every book ( with the exception of the Gustark series) is so different from the others, but always an interesting read. What a fertile mind.I enjoyed this manly book of adventure, danger and emerging personalities. I won't spoil the tale by disclosing the plot, but be assured it is worth the read.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An Engaging Novel By Proteus An engaging novel carried forward largely by conversation. Peacock was very familiar with the Classics, and the chapters all have Greek or Latin epigraphs. The conversations are witty, but the characters and Peacock himself are a little too eager to show off their learning. Critics used to say that something "smelled of the lamp," meaning that it was learned in an ostentatious way and showed the effects of "burning the midnight oil"--another phrase you don't hear much any more. A good read for someone willing to use his or her mind and previous education.

5 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Avoid Dodo Press edition By nmoira I highly recommend the novel, but the Dodo Press edition doesn't even seem to have been proofread after scanning. There are numerous typos (including character names and symbols instead of letters), foot notes are not at the bottom of the page (you have to search through the body of the text to find them), and the Greek text is not included. Very disappointing.

Includes: 15 Colored Illustrations and Biography Anne of Green Gables is a 1908 novel by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery. Written for all ages, it has been considered a children's novel since the mid-twentieth century. It recounts the adventures of Anne Shirley, an 11-year-old orphan girl who is mistakenly sent to Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, a middle-aged brother and sister who had intended to adopt a boy to help them on their farm in Prince Edward Island. The novel recounts how Anne makes her way with the Cuthberts, in school, and within the town. Since publication, Anne of Green Gables has sold more than 50 million copies and has been translated into 20 languages.[4] Numerous sequels were written by Montgomery, and since her death, another sequel has been published, as well as an authorized prequel. The original book is taught to students around the world. It has been adapted as film, made-for-television movies, and animated and live-action television series. Anne Shirley was played by Megan Follows in the 1985 Canadian produced movie. Plays and musicals have also been created, with productions annually in Canada since 1964 of the first musical production, which has toured in Canada, the United States, Europe and Japan.

Anne Of Green Gables: Color Illustrated, Formatted for E-Readers (Unabridged Version), by Lucy Maud Montgomery

Amazon.com Review When Marilla Cuthbert's brother, Matthew, returns home to Green Gables with a chatty redheaded orphan girl, Marilla exclaims, "But we asked for a boy. We have no use for a girl." It's not long, though, before the Cuthberts can't imagine how they could ever do without young Anne of Green Gables--but not for the original reasons they sought an orphan. Somewhere between the time Anne "confesses" to losing Marilla's amethyst pin (which she never took) in hopes of being allowed to go to a picnic, and when Anne accidentally dyes her hated carrot-red hair green, Marilla says to Matthew, "One thing's for certain, no house that Anne's in will ever be dull." And no book that she's in will be, either. This adapted version of the classic, Anne of Green Gables, introduces younger readers to the irrepressible heroine of L.M. Montgomery's many stories. Adapter M.C. Helldorfer includes only a few of Anne's mirthful and poignant adventures, yet manages to capture the freshness of one of children's literature's spunkiest, most beloved characters. There's just enough to make beginning readers want more--luckily, there's a lot more in the originals! Illustrator Ellen Beier creates vibrant pictures to portray the beauty of the land around Green Gables and the spirited nature of Anne herself. (Ages 5 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

From School Library Journal Grade 5-7-With a full cast and some background music, this radio play version of Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic hits the high points of the original novel. It is quite abbreviated, so each episode in Anne's orphan-girl-made-good story is afforded just enough time to lay out the bones of the plot. However, Anne's spunky and endearing character shines through scene after scene, as does some of the nostalgic charm of Avonlea's Canadian setting and quaint old Green Gables. All the parts are read very well, with a touching intensity that makes up for some of the brevity of plot episodes. A narrator fills in quite smoothly between the scenes for each event. Two nice features for young listeners make this a useful introduction to audio fiction. There is a pleasant chime played at the end of each side, and at the beginning of each side a line or two from the preceding side is repeated, helping to move listeners smoothly through the break in the action. This entertaining version may help lead youngsters to the original novel. School and public libraries seeking to add abridged novels to their collections or to introduce or entice young readers to longer fiction will want to consider this version.Jane P. Fenn, Corning-Painted Post West High School, NYCopyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal This version of Mongomery's classic is illustrated with 14 beautiful color prints by artist Gabriella Dellosso. Though many cheaper editions are available, this is really quite nice for the price.Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

625 of 633 people found the following review helpful. Enduring, original, and always entertaining Anne Shirley! By wildroses The ANNE OF GREEN GABLES series is one of the most unforgettable, and one of the most enjoyable, series of all children's literature. This series chronicles the life and times of Anne Shirley.Anne Shirley is the plucky, imaginative, red-haired orphan. Her parents die when she is baby, and so she spends the first 11 years of her life going between homes and orphanages, with no one really wanting to keep or to love her. By a mistake, she is brought to Avonlea--instead of a boy--to be adopted by Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, a pair of farmers who never thought they would be raising a girl in their old age.You may want to skip this next part of my review, because I am going to sum up each book briefly. No plot spoilers will be revealed, but some of the contents will, and if you haven't read all the books, then maybe you don't want the content revealed ahead of time.ANNE OF GREEN GABLES covers a span of Anne's first 5 years in Avonlea. She will age from 11 to 16. Her immortal antics that have made this book so beloved include her rivalry with Gilbert Blythe, dyeing her hair, and falling off of Mrs. Barry's roof...ANNE OF AVONLEA spans two years. Anne is 18 at the novel's finish. She has become a teacher. Marilla adopts twins. Also, Anne has some more humorous and immortal moments.ANNE OF THE ISLAND spans 4 years--Anne college years at Redmond. She will be 22 at the end of the novel. Anne discovers the real meaning of romance and love and courtship in this novel.ANNE OF WINDY POPLARS also known as ANNE OF WINDY WILLOWS covers the 3 years of Anne's engagement to Gilbert. She is a Principle at Summerside High School where she has to deal with the Pringle clan, Katherine Brooke, and plenty of other interesting folks.ANNE'S HOUSE OF DREAMS covers the first two years of Anne's married life. She and Gilbert now live in Four Winds Point, 60 miles east of Avonlea. Gilbert is making a living as a doctor, and the Blythes have new and interesting neighbors. **My favorite book of the series.**Note: there is about a 6 year break between AHoD and AoI.ANNE OF INGLESIDE covers about 6 years. Anne and Gilbert have moved to Glen St. Mary, near Four Winds Point, and now have children. This novel covers the birth of Rilla to the 15th wedding anniversary of Anne and Gilbert. More about Anne's children's adventures than Anne herself.RAINBOW VALLEY takes place in 1 year. It is about Anne's children, and more specifically their neighbors, the Merediths--Faith, Una, Jerry, and Carl--and Mary Vance, but Anne does come in at important points within the novel. Faith is reminiscent in many ways of the young Anne.Note: there is about a 9 year break between RV and RoI.RILLA OF INGLESIDE is a heroine in her right. She ages from 15 to 19 during World War 1, the setting of this novel's time period. Anne is by now in her 50s and is a background character, but Rilla is a delightful and outgoing heroine with or without her mother. This series was meant to be loved and reread and reread. Read the books in chronological order, or read them out-of-order but you'll still find them as fresh and enjoyable and as humorous as the first time you read them.***Montgomery wrote some books about Anne's neighbors in Avonlea (CHRONICLES OF AVONLEA, FURTHER CHRONICLES OF AVONELEA) and in Glen St. Mary (THE ROAD TO YESTERDAY). And so if you enjoy the Anne books you might enjoy those books as well---although any Montgomery book is a reccommended read.***

A long time friend forced me against my will to read the first "Anne" book and my life has been so much more beautiful ever since. These books made me see the magical beauty in nature, bosom friends, family, imagination, and even crabby old ladies (this last has come in handy on many occasions). I now have made a point of buying the set for every girl I consider a friend. I am now 23, and when I have children of my own, girls or boys, I will read them "Anne" as soon as they can understand what I am saying. If you liked the "Anne" books I would also recommend books by Louisa May Alcott (Little Women)and Frances Hodgson Burnett (A Little Princess)

160 of 165 people found the following review helpful. True Classic - In TRUE Original Form By D. Spurlock This 100th Anniversary Edition is just what it purports to be: a republishing of the original work, with original cover art. What the displeased readers below don't seem to realize is that the typos and lack of proofreading are part of the TRUTH about how this book was originally treated/printed. It was neither respected nor expected to do well (although the publishers -- and the author -- were quickly proven to have underestimated the gem that is Anne). If you're looking for a modern treatment of this classic story, with every "t" crossed and "i" dotted, then this is not the edition for you.If you're interested in imagining Maud Montgomery's true feelings, as she read her first printed novel, both her thrill at its mere publication and her resigned displeasure at the typos and misspellings, then this edition offers you a glimpse at the real condition of Anne's first publication, 100 years ago.

The Young Pitcher, by Zane Grey

About the Author American author (Pearl Zane Grey) is best known as a pioneer of the Western literary genre, which idealized the Western frontier and the men and women who settled the region. Following in his father s footsteps, Grey studied dentistry while on a baseball scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania. Grey s athletic talent led to a short career in the American minor league before he established his dentistry practice. As an outlet to the tedium of dentistry, Grey turned to writing, and finally abandoned his dental practice to write full time. Over the course of his career Grey penned more than ninety books, including the best-selling Riders of the Purple Sage. Many of Grey s novels were adapted for film and television. He died in 1939.

The characters are warm and well-developed. The setting is nostalgic and timeless. Readers will puzzle over "Frosh on the fifth" and chuckle over the potato toss. The reader can feel the despair when Ken finds out what he has done to the Captain of the college baseball team, and feels his chances of making the varsity squad slip away in an instant. No one can keep from laughing out loud when the perfume is spread or the sweater put on. The combination of setting, characters and good old-fashoned baseball makes for very pleasant reading. Personally, I recommend this book be read every Spring in anticipation of the upcoming baseball season, such as I have done for the last twenty-three years. It is a wonderful way to get in the mood for great battles on the ball diamond, as well as recapture the joys of youth. Reading this book could become as much a pastime as baseball itself. Young adult readers will find this book interesting and fun. Parents will appreciate the role model of young Peg Ward, whose standards of conduct are the highest, even when faced with peer pressures, not unlike those of today.

Zane Grey has the feel for what it is really like to be a college baseball player, along with all of its struggles and victories. This is a great story with a great ending. You too will enjoy this story about Ken Ward and all of his fellow teammates. In the end, you will be thoroughy satisfied. Great book!

At the age of 5 or 6 or 7 it was the beginning to what would become a lifetime of walking around with a paperback in the back pocket of my jeans. I remember quite a bit of it vividly, even now, 40 years later, especially Ken Ward trying not to throw that final low inside pitch to the slugger on a 3 and 2 count. I have never re-read it, but it stays with me still.
