Includes: 15 Colored Illustrations and Biography Emily Elizabeth Dickinson (December 10, 1830 – May 15, 1886) was an American poet. Dickinson was born in Amherst, Massachusetts. Although part of a prominent family with strong ties to its community, Dickinson lived much of her life highly introverted. After studying at the Amherst Academy for seven years in her youth, she briefly attended the Mount Holyoke Female Seminary before returning to her family's house in Amherst. Considered an eccentric by locals, she developed a noted penchant for white clothing and became known for her reluctance to greet guests or, later in life, to even leave her bedroom. Dickinson never married, and most friendships between her and others depended entirely upon correspondence. While Dickinson was a prolific private poet, fewer than a dozen of her nearly 1,800 poems were published during her lifetime. The work that was published during her lifetime was usually altered significantly by the publishers to fit the conventional poetic rules of the time. Dickinson's poems are unique for the era in which she wrote; they contain short lines, typically lack titles, and often use slant rhyme as well as unconventional capitalization and punctuation. Many of her poems deal with themes of death and immortality, two recurring topics in letters to her friends. Although Dickinson's acquaintances were most likely aware of her writing, it was not until after her death in 1886 — when Lavinia, Dickinson's younger sister, discovered her cache of poems — that the breadth of her work became apparent to the public. Her first collection of poetry was published in 1890 by personal acquaintances Thomas Wentworth Higginson and Mabel Loomis Todd, though both heavily edited the content. A complete, and mostly unaltered, collection of her poetry became available for the first time when scholar Thomas H. Johnson published The Poems of Emily Dickinson in 1955. Despite some unfavorable reception and skepticism over the late 19th and early 20th centuries regarding her literary prowess, Dickinson is now almost universally considered to be one of the most significant of all American poets

By A Customer If you want to read Emily Dickinson's poetry in their original form and you want to discover the incredible vitality of this poet's intellect, imagination, and artistic skill, don't buy this book. The poems in this collection are "improved" versions of the original poems which can be found in other available editions. Moreover, the selections include most of ED's least interesting work. When ED died two people selected some of her poems and prepared them for publication by adding punctuation, altering words, and even omitting words, lines, and whole stanzas so that the polite readers of her day would find ED's poems more palatable and less offensive.

63 of 66 people found the following review helpful. Finally! By A Customer Emily Dickinson finally has an edition of her poems that she fully deserves. As many readers know, many of her poems were left with variations in words and phrases. Sometimes, whole poems exist in completely different versions -- but the problem is that a "final" form for some poems is not as easy as it might seem since Dickinson herself left many variations on words and phrases without favouring a particular one! One could say that "final" versions for many of her poems simply do not exist. The Johnson edition (the old "definitive" edition) of the complete poems makes choices for the reader -- choices which, unfortunately, are not always the best. This new edition presents the poetry with all the variations intact, so that the reader could choose for him/herself a particular reading when Dickinson herself did not leave a final preference. This new edition is a *must* for anyone who loves Dickinson's poetry (such as myself) -- and it emphasizes just how rich and imaginative Dickinson's use of language really is. Dump your Johnson edition for recycling, folks. This is the definitive edition, worth every penny (and then some) of its rather high price.

44 of 45 people found the following review helpful. Emily Dickinson's Poetry is altered by the editor By Josh I am a big fan of Emily Dickinson, I love her poetry, but this edition is thoroughly rotten. It is not Emily Dickinson's poetry, but the edited version of her poetry, significantly changed by the same editor who rejected Dickinson's poems while she was alive. This edition is changed so much from the original poems that most of Dickinson's meaning is lost. If you want to read what Emily Dickinson really wrote, I reccomed the complete poetry of Emily Dickinson edited by Thomas H. Johnson, it is the complete and original poetry of Dickinson.

A Gentleman of Leisure, by P.G. Wodehouse

Review ''[Davidson's] light characterizations of the British male upper crust come off well . . . The story is hilarious.'' --AudioFile''The reader, Frederick Davidson, has a very interesting voice and uses it well to bring the various characters to life.'' --Library Journal

About the Author P.G. WODEHOUSE (1881-1975), an England-born journalist and novelist, lived in several different countries before settling in the United States after WWII. In a career spanning over sixty years, he wrote more than ninety books. During the 1920s, Wodehouse collaborated with Broadway legends like Cole Porter and George Gershwin on musicals, and in the 1930s, he expanded his repertoire by writing for motion pictures. He was honored with a knighthood in 1975.

From AudioFile Having joyfully awarded the coveted Earphones Award to two of Wodehouse's comedies (Jeeves Takes Charge and Heavy Weather), I must say that Davidson is not a masterful Wodehouse narrator like Edward Duke or Jeremy Sinden. Davidson has a urbane, British intonation, but his voice is just a shade too sardonic and bored to carry off Wodehouse. His light characterizations of the British male uppercrust come off well, but he's not successful with the women, who seem lifeless. However, the story is hilarious, and those who have not heard Wodehouse by the other narrators will enjoy it. D.W. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

11 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Early Wodehouse - Good but not great By Dave_42 "A Gentleman of Leisure" was first published under the title "The Intrusion of Jimmy" in the U.S. on May 11, 1910 by W. J. Watt and Co., and in the U.K. it was published under this title on November 15, 1910 by Alston Rivers, Ltd., which makes it one of Wodehouse's earlier works. The edition I am reviewoing is from The Collector's Wodehouse series being released by The Overlook Press (in the U.K. it is The Everyman's Wodehouse series from Everyman's Library). The series is very nicely produced, the bindings are excellent, and the paper quality is high. This particular story is about Jimmy Pitt, who makes a bet that "any man of ordinary intelligence could break into a house." There is some pre-history to the characters, which the reader is given in a hurry, and it feels a bit more forced than other Wodehouse books that I have read. I do not want to go into much detail about the plot because there are many twists and turns which are undoubtedly familiar to readers of Wodehouse. Still, there is something missing in the telling of this story. It lacks the easy flow that many of his later stories have. However, one can see the early elements of what would eventually make P. G. Wodehouse one of the great humorists of all time.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Overlooked Early Wodehouse Gem. By MRS P NICHOLSON Very interesting one this. While obviously not of the quality of his later work(i.e. from Leave It To Psmith onwards) this is a key early Wodehouse text. It almost reads like an early prototype for the aforementioned Psmith book, with it's country estate setting complete with valuable jewellery and potential thieves. Add in a very Threepwood-like peer with the backbone of a jellyfish having to contend with a formidable Uncle and Aunt and you have all the key ingredients for a classic Wodehouse. If you've read Leave It To Psmith then on no account miss this one, it's not the best of his early books(probably Pmith in the City) but it's the most prophetic.

9 of 11 people found the following review helpful. OK Comic Novel Foreshadows Better Stories By D. Frankham First published in 1910, this is one of Wodehouse's earliest adult novels, and it shows. Wodehouse's fine comic prose is very much in evidence and makes it readable enough; the trouble is the blandly flawless straight-arrow protagonist and the soppy generic romance plot. There are some more successful comical secondary characters, including a New York burglar (whose colourful New York criminal dialect begins to grate after a while), and a jelly-spined hard-up-for-cash English Lord tyrannised by his overbearing Uncle.Having read and loved some later Wodehouse, especially the Jeeves and Bertie stories, I soon found the more interesting elements of the book to be the foreshadowings of what was to come, viz:· Lord Dreever is rather like Bertie Wooster might be if he was dependent on Aunt Agatha;· Lord Dreever's unwanted betrothal would be relived by Bertie countless times;· Jimmy is mistaken for a professional thief;· and in the contrast between Jimmy's standard English and Spike's New York dialect lies the seeds of the juxtaposed Jeeves-speak and Bertie-speak that is one of the joys of those stories. In brief, this is chiefly for the Wodehouse fan interested in following the Master's development as a writer. Also published under the title 'The Intrusion of Jimmy'.

“Relish the day. If you’re not in awe, you’re just not paying attention.” She hadn’t even been in the crowded pound a week, but she’d already developed a nickname, “Knucklehead.” As a puppy she destroyed property and precious clothes; as an adult she injured her owner, ruined romances… and changed the world-views of those around her. Have you ever watched an animal and wondered how it thinks, how it sees the world, how it views you? And have you ever wondered what wisdom you might learn if you could see things as that animal does? This unique book is many things: an amusing and moving memoir about a memorable dog, a poetic ode to a human-animal connection, and a serious philosophical, psychological, and spiritual inquiry into the lessons a man gleaned from the simple-minded brilliance of a teacher, a lover, a liver of life to the fullest… a Knucklehead. There has never before been a book like "The Teachings of Shirelle." Take a walk with this pooch, and you might never look at life, love, or yourself the same again.

The Teachings of Shirelle: Life Lessons from a Divine Knucklehead, by Douglas Green

Review "Douglas Green's book is a warm, engaging, deceptively simple tribute to the innate wisdom of his beloved dog. May we all learn from such loveable teachers." --Dennis Palumbo - screenwriter My Favorite Year, author of the Daniel Rinaldi mysteries, and licensed psychotherapistA beautiful, heartfelt, and entertaining book, that gives the reader a deep understanding of the profound relationship between the human psyche and the souls of other animals with whom we share this planet. --Linda Buzzell, co-editor Ecotherapy - Healing with Nature in Mind, author How to Make it in HollywoodWith humor and candor, Douglas Green delightfully explores the extraordinary relationship between a man and a goofy, irrepressible, and unexpected best friend. His keen observations of Shirelle s remarkable, high-energy life and the blessings of meeting up with this amazing creature make this account both inspiring and, at times, laugh out loud funny. --Jane Hammerslough, author Dematerializing: Taming the Power of Possessions, The Search for Vile Things, The Home Alone Survival Guide

About the Author Douglas Green is a psychotherapist, writer, professor, and director, living in Los Angeles. He created and runs AskShirelle.com, a website offering advice to kids, teens, parents, and adults, based on the teachings in this book.

It's such a touching and funny story of a man and the dog he rescued as a pup right before she was doomed to be put down. The story of their lives together is filled with fun, anger, love and many.. what the.. moments.Shirelle was so funny and sweet and crazy all in one. She learns like they all do how to do things the right way and how to do what she wants. She was a great companion in therapy just by knowing what each patient needed from her. She was another brilliant soul and did nothing but give undying love to her person just like all wonderful doggers do.This story is also sad, it just about killed me what she had to go through. It brought back sad, crying memories of what my own dog and son Dakota went through, but not as long and not as bad as Shirelle. Shirelle was a fighter until she couldn't fight any more.I love how the author wrote out the different things he learned through Shirelle, to use in the real world.God bless all of the wonderful dogs and any other animals in all of our lives that love us unconditionally. We are all given a privilege if we are allowed to love all of these wonderful animals.*I would like to thank NETGALLEY and SMITH PUBLICITY for giving me the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for my honest review.*MY FULL REVIEWS:[...][...]

Blotzer If you love dogs, this book will deliver a story that will have you shake your head in recognition, laugh at the relationship between the two, and cry as they go through their lows. Shirelle is a dog that has problems from the beginning. She is slated to be destroyed when the author finds her and from there begins a relationship that will impact not only Mr. Green's life, but also many others around him.I was blown away at how fun and wonderful this story was. Shirelle reminded me of a dog I once has so it was even more personal to me than I would have once thought. I cried and laughed at the stories and the lessons she taught him. I received the ebook first and then was blessed by the publisher with the physical copy. If you are incline to purchase this book, buy the physical copy. The colored photos inside will make the book come alive even more and really make you connect with the characters.Bring a tissue and wag a tail, this is a book that will definitely make you think.

By Ray Morton The stated purpose of this book is to impart the life lessons that the author Douglas Green learned from his beloved pet dog Shirelle. The book accomplishes this task wonderfully well -- the lessons this "divine knucklehead" of a dog imparts to Green and therefore to all of us are sometimes right on the nose, sometimes wonderfully sly and oblique, and always full of the joy and wonder of being alive, being present, and being pure. I loved the book for these lessons, but I also loved it because it is a wonderful love letter from one living being to another and in writing it the author reveals the depths of his love, warmth, and capacity for caring and engagement and transformation. I came away from this book learning as much from Doug as I did from Shirelle and that made me treasure this sweet, sometimes sad, always touching book even more.

He is of course British, and so I expected the story to be British...imagine my surprise to find that this first book of his I've read has as its title character an American! Imagine my further (and greater) surprise to find that I share a last name with that main character. Frankly those two things started the book off right for me.Sally Nicholas lives in Boston, lives in a boarding house, and has a pompous ass of a brother. She also has a boyfriend whom she plans to marry; he's an aspiring playwright. She comes into some money as part of an inheritance, and travels to Europe, where she meets a pair of cousins. One's the ne'er-do-well who gets fired from every job the family arranges for him; the other's a business tycoon who moves money around and disapproves of the black sheep type. She returns, and her brother's got a new career producing her boyfriend's play, now that the first producer's girlfriend has thrown a fit and quit because she feared her status as the star of the production might be impinged on.The whole thing proceeds from there. The story is full of twists and turns, events unexpected and mostly harmless, if annoying and amusing. The author has a way with characters, and the plot is vaguely reminiscent of Jane Austen, if more modern and less densely written. I really enjoyed this book, and I imagine I'll enjoy future things of Wodehouse's that I read.

14 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Emotional Rollercoaster... By Bubba_Holtzkopf Wodehouse has written a very interesting book with the Adventures of Sally. In this case, the interest is created by Sally herself, as her story unfolds, even though she is surrounded by most every mundane stock character available during that time period. Yet still, Sally shines as an entirely human beacon of life, light and hope, in a world that seems doomed to be run with comedic austerity. Quite a unique perspective. You can almost feel the Great Depression looming ominously beyond the horizon, as the Sally's tale begins with dreamy plans for financial gains and burdens of familial financial loss. Almost immediately, Sally is whisked away to a less widely known vacation spot in Roville, France, where she meets love interests Mr. Two and Mr. Three (already engaged to Mr. One). Sally's sparked interest in Mr. Two, lets call him Ginger, begins the basic premise for the plot. The rest of the book involves rejection from Mr. One in favor of Miss Two, and offering scorn to Mr. Three in reponse to his offers of love, predictably because he was immediately and always disliked. This is all sandwiched between the financial adventures of Sally's brother Fillmore as he competes for financial independance by taking up multiple ludicrous failing schemes. Now, while unpredictable, the plot offers little in intrigue directly itself, but it does offer us something that few plots do: a feeling of reality. The repeated financial failures of friends and family members do happen, and seeing it portrayed here does a lot for the emotional involvment in the story. A nagging depression is the offshoot of this approach; always knowing that things are not going well, cannot go well, and will not go well does that to you.During these traumatic events, we see Sally, as she is portrayed as a real flesh and blood human being. Still trapped in the mannerisms of the day, the etiquette that covers up much of her true feelings, but also alone and dismal. One scene stands out to me more than anything. Sally receiving that 'Dear Jane' letter from Mr. One, knowing what it must contain, sitting on the floor in the bathroom and burning it. But not just burning it, but throwing a lit match at it and letting it burn on top of it, and repeating that process until it was nothing more than a dirty spot on the floor. Very memorable. While the basic plot, as I've outlined it seems simple, it is actually more complicated. There are reasons why each of the three love interests are considered and of interest, at least for a short time, and this is an example of the plot's creativity. Also, spicing up the plot, is the basic itinerary, which includes London, NYC, Chicago, Detroit, and the already mentioned Roville, France and these diverse locations add much to the flavor. Combine that with including three main characters of British descent, and you have a recipe for intrigue.Other story elements of interest include thetrical productions, boxers, and dance instructors (think Tina Turners 'Private Dancer' and you get the picture better). These so fit the persona of urban America at the time, and if you like any of these bits of Americana, this book would be considered a must read. As with most of the "classics" there are bits of historical flavor which make them real gems.Overall, a very good book from a very good author who has a very unique style of writing you are sure to find refreshing.Recommended.

Although it doesn't have the familiarity of a Jeeves-Wooster dynamic, this book hums with dramatic tension & comedy of the 1940s romantic comedy genre. A treasure, a gem - a must-have for any Wodehouse devotee.

  • The Hound of the Baskervilles is the third of the crime novels written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle featuring the detective Sherlock Holmes. Originally serialised in The Strand Magazine from August 1901 to April 1902, it is set largely on Dartmoor in Devon in England's West Country and tells the story of an attempted murder inspired by the legend of a fearsome, diabolical hound of supernatural origin. Sherlock Holmes and his companion Dr. Watson investigate the case. This was the first appearance of Holmes since his intended death in "The Final Problem", and the success of The Hound of the Baskervilles led to the character's eventual revival. In 2003, the book was listed as number 128 of 200 on the BBC's The Big Read poll of the UK's "best-loved novel." In 1999, it was listed as the top Holmes novel, with a perfect rating from Sherlockian scholars of 100.

The Hound of the Baskervilles: Golden Illustrated Classics (Comes with a Free Audiobook), by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Amazon.com Review We owe 1902's The Hound of the Baskervilles to Arthur Conan Doyle's good friend Fletcher "Bobbles" Robinson, who took him to visit some scary English moors and prehistoric ruins, and told him marvelous local legends about escaped prisoners and a 17th-century aristocrat who fell afoul of the family dog. Doyle transmogrified the legend: generations ago, a hound of hell tore out the throat of devilish Hugo Baskerville on the moonlit moor. Poor, accursed Baskerville Hall now has another mysterious death: that of Sir Charles Baskerville. Could the culprit somehow be mixed up with secretive servant Barrymore, history-obsessed Dr. Frankland, butterfly-chasing Stapleton, or Selden, the Notting Hill murderer at large? Someone's been signaling with candles from the mansion's windows. Nor can supernatural forces be ruled out. Can Dr. Watson--left alone by Sherlock Holmes to sleuth in fear for much of the novel--save the next Baskerville, Sir Henry, from the hound's fangs?

Many Holmes fans prefer Doyle's complete short stories, but their clockwork logic doesn't match the author's boast about this novel: it's "a real Creeper!" What distinguishes this particular Hound is its fulfillment of Doyle's great debt to Edgar Allan Poe--it's full of ancient woe, low moans, a Grimpen Mire that sucks ponies to Dostoyevskian deaths, and locals digging up Neolithic skulls without next-of-kins' consent. "The longer one stays here the more does the spirit of the moor sink into one's soul," Watson realizes. "Rank reeds and lush, slimy water-plants sent an odour of decay ... while a false step plunged us more than once thigh-deep into the dark, quivering mire, which shook for yards in soft undulations around our feet ... it was as if some malignant hand was tugging us down into those obscene depths." Read on--but, reader, watch your step! --Tim Appelo

From School Library Journal Grade 9 Up-In what is arguably both the best Sherlock Holmes story in the canon and one of the classic all-time mystery novels, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle parlays his interest in the occult with keen scientific detection in a story that prominently showcases Dr. Watson. Upon hearing Dr. James Mortimer's saga of the haunted Baskerville family and the recent death of family head Sir Charles Baskerville, apparently from the hound of the legend, Holmes and Watson begin their investigation. When the estate's heir, Sir Henry Baskerville, arrives in London from Canada strange things immediately occur and Holmes dispatches Watson to accompany Sir Henry to Baskerville Hall. Situated in Dartmoor in Devonshire, the estate borders a tremendous moor that includes Grimpen Mire, the deadly quicksand-like bog, and provides the Gothic atmosphere that so beautifully saturates the storyAthe oppressive manor and nightly sounds of a wailing woman, Neolithic ruins and monoliths throughout the moor, a mysterious butler and his agitated wife, an escaped killer at-large on the moor, and the spectral and murderous hound. This expurgated version is wonderfully conceived and executed in every aspect, but particularly in the dexterous delivery of veteran British actor, Tony Britton. His diverse and distinctive portrayal of over a dozen characters is singularly commanding. This literary masterwork that has found its simpatico audio incarnation should be an obligatory purchase for all audio collections.Barry X. Miller, Austin Public Library, TX Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal Reader Freddie Jones gives a riveting performance of Conan Doyle's most spellbinding novel. The story of the "hound from Hell" has haunted the Baskervilles through many generations. Now, Sir Henry Baskerville has more than the legendary hound to take on as Seldon, the infamous Notting Hill murderer, has escaped from prison and is known to be lurking around the moor. What a time for Sherlock Holmes to be detained in London! Thus, Watson is left to take on the case. This mystery is much more than elementary, however. The abridgment captures the dark, brooding nature of Dartmoor and the Grimpen Mire, providing the perfect backdrop for the story. Recommended for most libraries.?Theresa Connors, Arkansas Tech Univ., RussellvilleCopyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Unacceptable copy as it is mising passages - as mentioned before - which creates the most confusion from the very start. Should be removed from the Amazon catalog as it is unbecoming of this vendor. Unfortunately, this free version lacks several sections vital to solving the mystery. I have only read a couple chapters and have already found that the legend of the Baskervilles, the account of the death of Sir Charles Baskerville and a letter to Sir Henry Baskerville are missing. These omissions render this version useless, and force me to delete it from my library.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. What a mysterious quagmire By Ksenia Anske What a mysterious quagmire, sinister and poetical at the same time. It's been years since I read a Sherlock Holmes book, and it was in Russian on top of it. Reading it in English again brought me back to the moor, to the fog, to the melancholy English countryside where a vicious criminal plotted a cold-blooded murder by means of evoking an old family legend and making it come to life. Arthur Conan Doyle unfolds it masterfully, without missing a single detail and dragging the reader deeper and deeper into a tangle of secrets, at the same time narrating in a relaxed conversational of a gentleman simply telling a story. And the story is worth telling.Famous detective Sherlock Holmes is presented with a curious incident of old Sir Charles Baskerville dying tragically and unexpectedly, with no obvious signs of struggle, presumably, of a heart attack, leaving behind a considerable estate. Was it an accident? How did he really die? What if the legend is true? What if the hellhound, that supposedly is the Baskervilles' family curse and cause of death of every Baskerville, exists? Dr. Mortimer, a family friend, relays this story to Holmes and Watson, concerned for the well being of Sir Henry Baskerville, a new heir who is about to arrive from Canada to inherit the estate. And here the wild ride begins. What starts out as a simple string of coincidences and seemingly trivial and unrelated facts quickly escalates into a chilling chase, first in London, then at Baskerville Hall, and then comes to a spectacular and horrific climax out on a desolate Devonshire moor, complete with hellish howls in the boggy mist, savage prison convicts, strange tightlipped butlers, beautiful secretive women, and a slew of logical puzzles that are so characteristic of Doyle's work. I might just start rereading all Sherlock Holmes books again, this one was so good.

The para-cord shown doesn't seem too large, however the para-cord I used makes items like bracelets way too thick. Even the guys I know think they are too large and cumbersome. Use a smaller cording. Just my opinion!

The Vicar of Bullhampton, by Anthony Trollope

About the Author Anthony Trollope was a Victorian-era English author best known for his satirical novel The Way We Live Now, a criticism of the greed and immorality he witnessed living in London. Trollope was employed as a postal surveyor in Ireland when he began to take up writing as a serious pursuit, publishing four novels on Irish subjects during his years there. In 1851 Trollope was travelling the English countryside for work when was inspired with the plot for The Warden, the first of six novels in what would become his famous The Chronicles of Barsetshire series. Trollope eventually settled in London and over the next thirty years published a prodigious body of work, including Barsetshire novels such as Barchester Towers and Doctor Thorne, as well as numerous other novels and short stories. Trollope died in London 1882 at the age of 67.

40 of 41 people found the following review helpful. Excellent By mcerner The title of the book might lead you to refrain, since it implies that the story is about a country vicar. One wonders how exciting that might be? However, this book is probably one of Trollope's most suspenseful and well-rounded novels. You have a romance, an unrequited romance, and a young woman at the heart of it whose lack of fortune could lead her astray. Mary Lowther, visiting the vicar and her friend, his wife, receives a marriage proposal from Harry Gilmore, the local squire, who at the encouragement of the vicar, has fallen desperately in love with Mary. Mary has offered no encouragement, and despite the pressure of the vicar and his wife to accept the marriage offer, refuses. Once at home, she falls in love with a visiting relation, but because he is penniless, cannot marry him. Thus she is tossed about on the tides of marital opportunities, continually pressured by friends and family to turn to Harry Gilmore. This portion of the story is rather like a "one woman stands against the world" scene, and it is intriguing, frustrating, and ultimately inspiring as Mary finds her strength not just in love but in herself. If romance doesn't interest you, Trollope has thrown in a second storyline, one unusual in his books. A murder occurs, and the vicar sets about attempting to solve it because the suspect -- even he suspects him -- is a young man from his neighborhood who has been skirting the law and morality for some time. Add to that, we have the character of the beautiful Carry Brattle, seduced by a man outside of wedlock and then tossed out of her home by her insulted father, forced to turn to prostitution in order to eat and find shelter. Her trials and her reform, including her family's eventual forgiveness of her sins, is at once indicative of the harsh lives imposed upon women in Trollope's era and a hope for a future where women are not viewed as the property of men but as persons in their own right. Finally, the vicar does have his own story as he insults a nobleman in his parish and is thereby made an enemy, the nobleman going so far as to build a new church right up against the vicar's property as an insult to the vicar's faith and effectiveness as a man of religion. How this resolves itself is a lark! The story is exciting, and each storyline is so well intertwined that the switch from one to the other as the book progresses is smooth. Never a dull moment in this one, you'll find that from the first page, you cannot put the book down.

Insightful, realistic, a pleasure to read By Constant Weeder Other reviewers have discussed the plot and the characters of this wonderful mid-Victorian novel; I would rather speculate about what makes the author so much a favorite of mine. Trollope led a jumbling life, traveling constantly during his career as a postal inspector in Ireland, and throughout the world thereafter. He started life as a poor boy suffering hazing at a rich boy's school, was defeated later in a run for Parliament, and ended up a loud, red-faced, hale fellow at clubs. But something developed in his character that gave him remarkable insight into both the upper and lower class mental sets of the English mind of that period. The result is that he can marvelously reproduce both the speech and the thought patterns of his men and women characters as they wrestle with problems they encounter in everyday ethical situations, both ordinary and extraordinary. Thus, we are presented with the dilemmas of a puzzled betrothed young woman, a "fallen" woman, a youth suspected of murder, an old man torn by grief, a man in the throes of unrequited love, and a fight between a country parson and a lord. Everything is explained and I found myself murmuring, "Of course. They would think that, say that, do that." Unlike Dickens, he doesn't deal in grotesques. Unlike Thackeray, he doesn't mock his creations. The novel is therefore a perfect example of the Realist school of fiction writing as well as a fine read. It doesn't cut as deeply as "The Way We Live Now," which could be a treatise on the "greed is good" generations of our recent past, nor does it have the spellbinding comedy-tragedy of the Barsetshire series, nor the political intricacies of the Palliser Series of his novels, but Trollope doesn't disappoint the attentive reader who will suspend "presentism" type judgments about the role of women or the church in the 19th century or the fact that defendants in a criminal trial could not testify. That was then. He still speaks to us now, and speaks quite clearly.

Means As a professor of literature, and as a "common reader," I revere Tolstoy above all other novelists I have read, but I would place Trollope just below him, in company with Dickens, Balzac, Austen, and Lawrence. It did not surprize me much to learn, while reading a biography of Tolstoy, that he had a great admiration for Trollope's work. Both these men share, in my opinion, an almost Olympian view of the human beings they have created. I sometimes think these men are writers for grown-ups because they do not deal in villains. We see their characters, as they do, as from a great height, so that Trollope's Crosbie, or Tolstoy's Vronsky demand from us almost as much compassion as those whom they injure. I guess I could sum up why I respect Trollope so: he is the master of ordinary life, and --like Tolstoy--he makes it extraordinary. The clerical hero of "The Vicar of Bullhampton" is one of the extraordinary, ordinary men. You will remember him.
