Architecture lovers and Francophiles, rejoice. French writer Joris-Karl Huysmans' novel set at the famed cathedral at Chartres contains such detailed descriptions of the site's layout and construction that early tourists sometimes used it as a guidebook. The book is the third in a series of works that follow the religious conversion and spiritual life of Durtal, the protagonist that Huysmans modeled on himself.

You will Adore This By propertius This novel and indeed this writer is thoroughly in the camp of those late Edwardian writers who had not been influenced by the arrival the modernists although he was admired by the likes of T S Eliot who would probably list him as a "moral writer."The story tells of the human machinations revolving around the choice of a new rector for a cherished seat, the societal forces concerning the of the Victorian era as it affects Anglicanism, social mores, generational conflicts, etc. You get the point, this is a novel that is painted with a broad brush and what I found so intriguing is that all the numerous characters are neither cliches nor shallow. Even the town and of course the Cathedral are woven into the woof and weft of the story in a, if not exactly subtle manner, then certainly in an effective way.Not a quick read but a delightful journey.

A Christmas Carol: With Original Illustrations (1843) (Illustrated), by Charles Dickens

Amazon.com Review In the history of English literature, Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol, which has been continuously in print since it was first published in the winter of 1843, stands out as the quintessential Christmas story. What makes this charming edition of Dickens's immortal tale so special is the collection of 80 vivid illustrations by Everett Shinn (1876-1953). Shinn, a well-known artist in his time, was a popular illustrator of newspapers and magazines whose work displayed a remarkable affinity for the stories of Charles Dickens, evoking the bustling street life of the mid-1800s. Printed on heavy, cream-colored paper stock, the edges of the pages have been left rough, simulating the way in which the story might have appeared in Dickens's own time. Though countless editions of this classic have been published over the years, this one stands out as particularly beautiful, nostalgic, and evocative of the spirit of Christmas.

From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. Dickens's classic holiday tale, like many cultural touchstones, often falls into the trap of perennial reinterpretation. First aired in 1990 but only now available on CD, NPR's presentation serves to place the familiar story back in its historical context. NPR News anchor Susan Stamberg's introduction, along with background information in the liner notes, offers valuable insights regarding both Dickens's gritty backdrop and his role in reviving Christmas traditions otherwise forgotten amid rapid urban industrialization. The script being performed is the same one Dickens used to use at readings. Comedy legend Winters, who serves as narrator while also performing all of the male roles, juggles his duties seamlessly and demonstrates remarkable dramatic range. His portrayal of Scrooge before the ghostly visitations evokes discernable pain and loss beyond the over-the-top antics of an ogre figure. Veteran actress Mimi Kennedy voices the female parts with gusto. With its quality production, attractive price and one-hour length, this release offers the perfect gift and establishes a festive new annual ritual for families to share. (Sept.) From School Library Journal Grade 4 Up-This recording of A Christmas Carol is a pleasant way to spend a few hours during the holiday season. Although abridged, it retains the spirit and language of Dickens' original manuscript. Anton Lesser gives a superb performance as the narrator and the voices of the characters, especially when portraying the Cratchit family, the Christmas Spirits and the London dialects. All characters are easily understood. Appropriate music begins and ends each cassette. This enjoyable retelling would be especially appropriate for family listening and a special treat for English literature classes.Pat Griffith, Schlow Library, State College, PA Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Possibly the best "Christmas Carol" ever By CC-in-VA Many versions of Dickens' classic "A Christmas Carol" are actually abridgements (done more or less smoothly) but this version is complete and unabridged. Even if you think you are familiar with the book you may find upon reading this one that you previously had read a shortened version! The completeness of this volume would be reason enough to add it to your library, but the quality of the pages, typeface, and above all the lovely illustrations scattered throughout further commend it. I have bought copies for all 3 of my grown children--because every family deserves to own a complete version of this classic story and this one is the best I have ever seen.

Schoonover I hope all readers take time to read A CHRISTMAS CAROL in the original language Dickens used in the 1840's. Dickens' language remains humorous, descriptive and insightful and not inaccessible to most modern readers especially with the use of a good glossary. This is a great read aloud for families at Christmas time and also a great introduction to Dickens and other Victorian writers. Don't settle for an abridged version. Read this masterpiece the way it was intended

Orley Farm, by Anthony Trollope

Review 'Brilliantly choreographed legal thriller'.- Craig Brown, The Mail on Sunday, 1.8.99

From the Back Cover With its concern for social issues and its extensive coverage of middle-class and landed life, Orley Farm is a novel that demands attention in the rich field of nineteenth-century fiction.

About the Author Anthony Trollope was a Victorian-era English author best known for his satirical novel The Way We Live Now, a criticism of the greed and immorality he witnessed living in London. Trollope was employed as a postal surveyor in Ireland when he began to take up writing as a serious pursuit, publishing four novels on Irish subjects during his years there. In 1851 Trollope was travelling the English countryside for work when was inspired with the plot for The Warden, the first of six novels in what would become his famous The Chronicles of Barsetshire series. Trollope eventually settled in London and over the next thirty years published a prodigious body of work, including Barsetshire novels such as Barchester Towers and Doctor Thorne, as well as numerous other novels and short stories. Trollope died in London 1882 at the age of 67.

50 of 50 people found the following review helpful. Trollope at his best! By Leonard L. Wilson Orley Farm is Trollope at his best (as good as the Barsetshire series), which means some of the best characterizations in the English language. Trollope's people are real; the beleaguered Lady Mason, charged with forging a will; the aged lover Sir Peregrine Orme; Madeleine Stavely, deeply but practically in love; the shallow, fickle Sophia Furnival and others are 3-dimensional figures that live and breathe. His satire of the so-called "justice" system is the best kind of satire: he just describes the court proceedings as they really are. The result is as up-to-date as today's newspaper. It is no wonder that Trollope's revival in popularity is continuing to grow.

20 of 20 people found the following review helpful. An elegant, subtle undermining of the legal system. By A Customer Orley Farm is Trollope at his most profound, and his most entertaining. It is difficult to ascertain what is best in this novel: the subtle, incisive examination of how legal systems cannot be impartial and, more fundamentally, how humankind looks after its own regardless of right and wrong; or the episodic journey with some of Trollope's most memorable (and always three dimensional) characters - the 'wrong' but completely empathic Lady Mason, the fiercely honourable Sir Peregrine Orme, the virile young Peregrine Orme and, most memorably, the gentle overwhelmed but staunchly loyal Mrs Orme - undergoing the pangs of Trollope's drama amidst ancient piles, undulating hedgerows and sequestered English fields.

24 of 25 people found the following review helpful. Deja Vu All Over Again By A Customer Orley is simply timeless. Just as in the Palliser series, the characters are the people all around you, in the office, in the news, and on the tube. Trollope's ability to understand the subtle differences that shape the mind of men and women is simply uncanny. If you are a truth seeker, this is a book for you. Anyone with exposure to a legal system with its basis in the English common law will understand the perceptive analysis it is subjected to in Orley Farm. The distinction between evil deeds and the often sympathetic humans that are their authors is one that modern American culture often forgets to make. Orley Farm is here to remind us. As a trusts and estates lawyer, I can not believe that I practiced for fifteen years before someone told me about this gem.

After her husband died, she resisted, over and over again, making contact with him because she believed that death was the end. After her first contact, she communicated with him for twenty years.A special edition (with dustcover) was published because history has shown that reading this book can end a person's grief at "losing" someone. Usually the book was received as a gift and this special edition of Mrs. Wright's lovely true story is meant to feel special in someone's hands. A paperback version (also Xlibris Publishing) is also available. If you know someone having a problem with the loss of a loved one, this book is the perfect gift.If you are afraid of dying, it is also the perfect gift for you to give to yourself.

1 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Something very wrong... By R. Martinez i was shocked and disturbed by this book-not because of any supernatural content, but because someone worked a major scam on this poor woman. She was apparently an intelligent person, a champion of women's rights, yet someone was able to manipulate her into doing unbelievable things. She was isolated from her friends, who had no idea what was going on, her social life and diet were dictated by her "new friends" -all in the name of her dead husband, whom they claimed to be in touch with, psychically. She was persuaded to buy an expensive piano she did not want, to take music lessons she had no interest in, to do hours of calisthenics in the nude, and to go without sleep. All this was kept secret even though she nearly died. Somehow they convinced her that her dead husband and his "associates" were overseeing all this for her own benefit. This went on for months or years. i want to know who these people were and how they got away with it! They must have got a lot of money out of her to put so much time and effort into their scam. i feel what she wrote was only part of the story, and i wish i knew the rest of it! If you read this book, i hope you will post your thoughts here.

Alice in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll

Amazon.com Review Source of legend and lyric, reference and conjecture, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is for most children pure pleasure in prose. While adults try to decipher Lewis Carroll's putative use of complex mathematical codes in the text, or debate his alleged use of opium, young readers simply dive with Alice through the rabbit hole, pursuing "The dream-child moving through a land / Of wonders wild and new." There they encounter the White Rabbit, the Queen of Hearts, the Mock Turtle, and the Mad Hatter, among a multitude of other characters--extinct, fantastical, and commonplace creatures. Alice journeys through this Wonderland, trying to fathom the meaning of her strange experiences. But they turn out to be "curiouser and curiouser," seemingly without moral or sense.

For more than 130 years, children have reveled in the delightfully non-moralistic, non-educational virtues of this classic. In fact, at every turn, Alice's new companions scoff at her traditional education. The Mock Turtle, for example, remarks that he took the "regular course" in school: Reeling, Writhing, and branches of Arithmetic-Ambition, Distraction, Uglification, and Derision. Carroll believed John Tenniel's illustrations were as important as his text. Naturally, Carroll's instincts were good; the masterful drawings are inextricably tied to the well-loved story. (All ages) --Emilie Coulter

From Publishers Weekly DeLoss McGraw's illustrations bring the magic of Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland to a younger audience, with abstract splashes of color that render the Caterpillar a bit less eerie and the Queen less terrifying than Sir John Tenniel's interpretation. One hallucinogenic image captures Alice awash in deep blue watercolor, her long legs rising in an ethereal haze as her head reaches the ceiling. A small green window and miniaturized chair accentuate her rapid growth.

From School Library Journal Grade 4-8 Many fine artists have illustrated Alice in Wonderland , notably Arthur Rackham (Heinemann, 1907; o.p.), Ralph Steadman (Potter, 1973; o.p.), and Barry Moser (University of California Pr, 1982). Like the others, Browne utilizes Carroll's full text, including the ``Golden Afternoon'' poem and an author's note about the Hatter's Riddle. As a tribute to Tenniel's artistry, most of the best illustrators echo his unforgettable drawings. Although some of Browne's illustrations borrow Tenniel's composition, for example the frog doorman and the fish messenger, Browne's hyper-realistic style and quirky details make them his own. He ably avoids the Disneyesque trap that many full-color illustrators fall into. His Alice, more ordinary and child-like, meets all of the customary bizzare creatures, including Browne's signature gorilla. Readers will enjoy discovering the odd details that Browne includes, such as the fish mustache on the marble bust or the club-shaped beauty mark and the pig-earred hat on the Duchess. Reillustrating a classic like Alice in Wonderland is a challenge. Many have tried, but only a few can match Lewis Carroll's brilliance. Anthony Browne is one of them. Karen K. By Monika My first exposure to Lewis Carroll's classic children's story was through the 1951 Disney film adaptation "Alice in Wonderland," which I watched repeatedly as a child. The creative quality of the story never failed to fascinate me, and I kept going back despite my deep-rooted terror of the frightful Queen of Hearts, who always gave me nightmares! However, it was not until recently, as an adult, that I ever picked up the book/s upon which that film was based. In some ways I wish I had read it when I was younger, as the book certainly makes a great deal more sense than the movie does (as much sense as a story of this sort can, anyhow), but thankfully this book is unique in that it is just as enjoyable for adults as for children. The story is actually spread across two books, here contained in a single volume. "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" was first published in 1865 and relates the events that take place after young Alice falls asleep during her lessons and dreams of following a white rabbit down a rabbit hole. Alice encounters all manner of strange creatures in her dream, and finds herself in all sorts of curious predicaments where common sense fails and the nonsensical comes to be expected. There is no central, concrete storyline, but rather Alice moves rapidly from one bizarre situation to the next before waking once more and relating the whole adventure to her sister. The second of the two books, "Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There," appeared in 1871 and is very similar in nature to the first, though having a slightly different plot. Here Alice steps through an ordinary looking-glass one day, only to find herself in a world where, if you wish to get anywhere, you must walk in the opposite direction! Walking toward your desired destination only gets you further and further away. Also, interestingly, the land which Alice has entered is essentially a giant chessboard, and she must move through the different squares to reach the other side if she wishes to become a queen (which she does). The characters Carroll created in these two stories are some of the most strikingly unique and unforgettable in the world of literature. Alice herself, based largely on Alice Liddell, a real-life child of whom Carroll was very fond, is a wonderful heroine that you can't help admiring. Throughout all of her backwards and upside-down adventures, she remains ever sensible and analytical, always trying to reason her way out of the most unreasonable situations. Other characters a reader won't soon forget include the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, the Dormouse, the Cheshire Cat, Bill the Lizard, the Caterpillar, the Duchess and her peppery cook, the aforementioned Queen of Hearts, the Mock Turtle, the Gryphon, the Red and White Queens, the talking flowers, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, the Sheep, Humpty Dumpty, and the Red and White Knights. Carroll also created many fascinating new creatures in his stories, including bread-and-butterflies, rocking-horseflies, "slithy toves," "mome raths" and more. What I find most intriguing, as an adult reader of these books, is Carroll's brilliant use of wordplay and symbolism throughout the stories. Nearly everything has some sort of double meaning. There are hidden messags and subtle witticisms on every page. Carroll also includes several parodies of what were well-known songs and rhymes in England at the time. Young children will love the books for their fantastic qualities and imaginative inspiration, but most readers will not pick up on the many puns and jokes until they are a little older, so these stories really do have something to offer to anyone, no matter what age. I'd highly recommend the book to any reader - and be sure to get an edition that includes the original illustrations. This review refers to the 2004 Barnes & Noble Classics printing, with introduction and notes by Tan Lin.

Kauffmann There is one thing that all potential customers must keep in mind when buying any Alice book: Do not purchase one that does not include the illustrations of John Tenniel! This edition includes all of them and the quality of the reproductions on the pages are excellent. Tenniel's illustrations help add to the childish excitement of Carroll's stories and will be especially invaluable to teenagers and adults, having just by nature of growing up lost some of the imaginative innocence, that ability to stretch reality, that we all possessed as kids.Of course, the illustrations wouldn't mean jack if they didn't have a captivating story to work with. Carroll's amusing tale of nonsense is targeted as a kid's book, and that is always where many of our fondest memories of it will remain, but as a college student reading it I was amazed by its power to suspend reality and return me to a level of imagination that I had simply thought I lost somewhere along the way. The trip down the rabbit hole can be quite a different experience from a different point of view. This particular edition also includes a good introduction and very helpful explanatory notes organized chapter by chapter. The introduction and notes offer insights to Carroll's life and his relations with the real life Alice and her family that, from a student viewpoint, reveal an interesting and more personal side of the Alice tales.
