The Kellys and the O'Kellys, by Anthony Trollope

About the Author Anthony Trollope was a Victorian-era English author best known for his satirical novel The Way We Live Now, a criticism of the greed and immorality he witnessed living in London. Trollope was employed as a postal surveyor in Ireland when he began to take up writing as a serious pursuit, publishing four novels on Irish subjects during his years there. In 1851 Trollope was travelling the English countryside for work when was inspired with the plot for The Warden, the first of six novels in what would become his famous The Chronicles of Barsetshire series. Trollope eventually settled in London and over the next thirty years published a prodigious body of work, including Barsetshire novels such as Barchester Towers and Doctor Thorne, as well as numerous other novels and short stories. Trollope died in London 1882 at the age of 67.

It was his second book, and it shows that he knew how to write a social comedy from the beginning. The characters are beautifully drawn, and the dilemmas are, of course, utterly mundane and utterly dramatic. A piece of property goes to a plain but decent woman, which raises her value in the marriage market. Her brother resents her. Will he become violent, or is he just a hapless drunk? Another man, who has a large property, puts it in jeopardy by owning race horses--but his trainer is the wisest man he knows (which doesn't mean his horses always win). This is a jewel, written in Trollope's characteristic smooth but pointed style. No one in England was interested in the Irish when it came out (1848), and it sold about fifty copies. It has always been outshone by his later works. I believe he was thirty-two when he wrote it. But it is wise, entertaining and full of those sort of moral riddles we love Trollope for exploring.

By Russell Fanelli The Kelly's and the O'Kelly's is the 23rd novel by Anthony Trollope I have read. I had just finished the Macdermots of Ballycloran, his first novel, written in 1847 and decided that I would read his second novel, The Kelly's... written in 1848. Both stories are set in Ireland where Trollope worked as a young man for the English Post Office. What I think is most noteworthy about The Kelly's... is the villain, Barry Lynch. Of all the many novels of Trollope I have read, Barry is by far the most evil and despicable person he has created. From our very first introduction to Barry to the end of the novel, he is hated and despised by all who know him, and for good reason. He is a selfish, self-centered man who will lie, cheat, steal, and even do murder to get what he wants. No spoilers here - Trollope takes us aside early in his novel and describes Barry's character in some detail. We know what to expect and we are not disappointed. Just as the villain Uriah Heep in David Copperfield adds dramatic conflict to that wonderful novel by Charles Dickens, so does Barry Lynch energize the plot in The Kelly's and the O'Kelly's.As mentioned earlier, the novel is set in Ireland and Trollope provides much local color as he tells the story of Martin Kelly and the woman he wants to marry, Anty Lynch, Barry's sister, and then Fanny Wyndham and her fiancé Lord Ballindine, Frank O'Kelly. Barry Lynch does everything possible to prevent the marriage of his sister Anty to Martin Kelly and Lord Cashel, Fanny's uncle, tries his best to keep Fanny from marrying Frank O'Kelly. Barry and Lord Cashel want Anty and Fanny's money for themselves. The Kelly's and the O'Kelly's is typical of the many novels Trollope will write about love lost and won. What makes Trollope special and why I keep coming back for more is his ability to involve us in his story and make us care about his characters and what will happen to them. Trollope is a reader's best friend. He frequently takes us into his confidence and talks to us about his characters and their problems. He is a wise observer who is skilled in describing what he sees. As readers we enter the world he has created for us and experience the story as if we were there. To be able to lose ourselves for a time in a strange new world is certainly one of the joys of reading and few are able to make this possible better than the master, Anthony Trollope.

An entertaining Irish story By Meredith/Susan The Kellys and the O'Kellys, Trollope's second novel, is one of his most entertaining and humorous, just as his first, The Macdermots of Ballycloran, is possibly his bleakest and most tragic. Most of his later novels contain both light and dark, not necessarily in equal measures, but in some degree so as to balance and complement each other. There is darkness in this one as well, but we never feel there is danger that it will ultimately prevail. The plot here is a double one, with many similarities and some contrasts between the two parallel stories, set in the period just before the Great Famine. Two good-natured young Irish men of different stations in life, Protestant aristocrat Frank O'Kelly (Lord Ballindine) and middle-class Catholic farmer Martin Kelly, are landlord and tenant, distant cousins and friends, helping each other out in various ways. Both consider themselves happily engaged to young ladies who are conveniently heiresses, but both have problems insofar as arranging to get these ladies to the actual altar. Martin is cautious, responsible and ambitious, while Frank is easy-going, fond of his hounds and horses, and prone to overspending his income. The ladies involved, Anty and Fanny, have expressed their willingness to wed, but both have relatives with other fates in mind for them.Anty (Anastasia) has a brother who is furious with their deceased father for having left a will dividing his wealth between his two children, instead of making his son the sole heir as expected. Anty, the Catholic daughter of a long-dead Catholic mother, has led a sort of Cinderella existence, treated as a servant by her brutish father and selfish brother, both Protestants. When the brother hears that she is thinking of marrying, he is desperate to seize her share of the inheritance for himself; he plots to have her declared insane, and fantasizes about, then threatens murder. Fanny, on the other hand, is in no danger of being murdered, though her rich guardian would have few qualms about throwing her along with her substantial inheritance into the maelstrom of debt owed by his own son and heir; with that purpose in mind he seeks to separate her from her fiancé.The entire society of counties Mayo and Galway becomes involved in these dilemmas, on one side or another. There are lawyers, doctors, priests, parsons, horse trainers, fox hunters, and fools, every one offering his personal opinion and bit of advice, as well as mothers, sisters and housemaids eager to influence the course of events. Particularly vivid are the formidable innkeeper Mrs. Kelly, on the good side, and on the other side, Barry Lynch, Eton-educated son of a crooked land agent, possibly the most absolutely evil character Trollope ever created, with barely invisible horns and hooves to complement his red face and wild eyes. This story is so lively and dramatic that it positively cries out for attention from the BBC or some other worthy producer. Of all Trollope's novels this one has by far the most specific and pervading elements of local color. Trollope's English settings can have a somewhat generalized feel, idyllic countryside or cut-throat urban jungle. But here everything reflects his own involvement with and observation of particular places and people with whom he was in daily contact, as he traveled around Ireland trying to make mail delivery more efficient. The written conversation here is brilliant as always, but with the added delight of colorful and picturesque Irish expressions and speech patterns, reflecting the author's careful listening, never exaggerated or falling into parody or stereotype.Despite its status as a very early work, only the second of 47 novels, this is quintessential Trollope, featuring character types, situations, attitudes and moral dilemmas which will recur again and again in various relationships and configurations throughout his entire oeuvre. This novel would be a great place for a new Trollope reader to begin.

I was gifted a paperback copy and wow. The book was a lot heavier than I was expecting and the quality on the paper is great. The imagery that is in the book is a vision quest in its self. The textbook blew my mind and I am ecstatic to start doing the exercises in the book. My favorite part of the book is the format. It is one of the easiest to follow textbooks I have ever read. I liked how I could skim the pages and look at quotes, images or go to the exercises. I would buy this book in a heartbeat.

I attended a class Donna taught and really enjoyed connecting to the images via what I was draw. Then letting go and allowing the images to dictate the completed collage. It is a relaxing and creative process. Donna explores sever different ways to approach collage allowing the reader different perspectives so they can find the Quest that works best for them. A book you can explore over and over!

The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., commonly referred to as The Sketch Book, is a collection of 34 essays and short stories written by American author Washington Irving. It was published serially throughout 1819 and 1820. The collection includes two of Irving's best-known stories, attributed to the fictional Dutch historian Diedrich Knickerbocker, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle". It also marks Irving's first use of the pseudonym "Geoffrey Crayon", which he would continue to employ throughout his literary career. The Sketch Book, along with James Fenimore Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales, was the first widely read work of American literature in Britain and Europe. It also helped advance the reputation of American writers with an international audience

By Monika I must admit I bought this book solely out of a desire to read "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," probably the work Irving is most well-known for today. Every year on Halloween, when I was growing up, a small group of friends and I would watch the old Disney cartoon version of the story while we sorted through our candy. More recently, I fell in love with the 1999 live action adaptation "Sleepy Hollow" starring Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci. I figured it was about time I read the original story to see how these two films stack up in comparison. The rest of the material in the book was of secondary interest to me in making my purchase, but having now read it I can say that, while it wasn't quite what I expected, it was well worthwhile. The title is both apt and misleading by turns: "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and other stories in the Sketch Book." The use of the term "other stories" led me to believe that it would be just that - a collection of short fiction stories. Not so. There are three pieces in the book which would fit this description - "Rip Van Winkle," "The Specter Bridegroom," and the aforementioned "Legend of Sleepy Hollow" - but the rest is a conglomeration of various other types of writing. The title "Sketch Book" is very appropriate. Irving has, in essence, provided us with a series of short, literary "sketches" on a variety of subjects and in a variety of styles. The topics vary, but they are also arranged in such a way that one usually flows smoothly into the next, lending a sense of continuity despite the variability of material covered.A large percentage of the book is devoted to the author's observations on life in England, himself, though an American, having spent 17 years there. Some are purely observational, and some have elements of fiction and imagination woven in, as is the case with "The Mutability of Literature," an interesting little piece in which Irving imagines a conversation between himself and an old book. Irving also occasionally ventures into the realm of satire. Other topics he explores include the differences between America and England, the role of women, English funeral traditions, Christmas, love, etc. He also did travel pieces, including the interesting "Stratford on Avon," which tells of his exploration of places connected with the life of William Shakespeare. Toward the end there are two pieces discussing the lot of Native Americans - not politically correct by today's standards, but offering an interesting insight on the mindsets of the time.I should probably take a little time to discuss "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" itself, since it was my primary motivation for purchasing the book and, I suspect, will be what draws most other modern readers to it as well. If you've only seen the 1999 movie version, do NOT expect anything remotely similar. The old Disney cartoon is much more accurate. It is actually a very short story - about 32 pages in length. Ichabod Crane is a schoolmaster (not an investigator as in the 1999 movie) in the town of Sleepy Hollow, and falls for the young and lovely Katrina Van Tassel. Katrina, however, is also being courted by a rival suitor, Brom Van Brunt. Following a town "quilting frolic" at which many tales of local superstition are told, including that of the Headless Horesman, Ichabod sets out into the night alone, is beset by a headless rider before he reaches is destination, and is never seen in Sleepy Hollow again. It is left up to the reader to determine what happens to him.The language of the book is antiquated, to be sure, having been composed in 1820, but it is not difficult to read. Irving's writing is very warm and inviting. He does tend to paint things rather romantically, and the England he shares with us is not the England of the Industrial Revolution during which the book was written, but this almost makes it more appealing as it opens up room for imagination. One must also remember that Irving wrote the pieces in "The Sketch Book" largely to combat his own depression, a condition he suffered from greatly, and he probably needed a cheerful outlet to distract him. We do, nevertheless, get a glimpse of his more melancholy thoughts in pieces like "The Widow and Her Son," "Rural Funerals," and "The Pride of the Village," all of which deal with death. The last chapter of the book, "L'Envoi," is a closing piece that was included at the end of the second volume of the London edition. It is an interesting collection of the author's thoughts on and explanations for his own work. He makes an interesting note on the ecclectic nature of the book: "His [the author's] work being miscellaneous, and written for different humors, it could not be expected that anyone would be pleased with the whole, but that if it should contain something to suit each reader, his end would be completely answered. Few guests sit down to a varied table with an equal appetite for every dish" (362). Also included is an Afterword by Perry Miller, which offers observations and insights on Irving's life and career.

By Thomas Moody Not to be read quickly and to be savored like fine wine, Washington Irving's "The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon" is a matchless classic in American Literature. Written in 1820 and destined to become a true American literary pantheon (along with his preceeding work "Diedrich Knickerboker's History of New York), Irving introduces us to timeless observations and wit that ultimately become enduring discources defining early American Literature.Irving's mantra with this work is a set of observations, indeed "sketches" of his many travels and musings while roaming through England and his home in upstate New York along the Hudson River. The eternal figures of Rip Van Winkle and Ichabod Crane are evoked in this tome and set a literary standard that others aspire to, but one that Irving effortlessly achieves time and again. Not only does this volume frame these two classics, "The Sketch Book" also contains other literary giants such as "The Angler", "John Bull", "Philip of Pokanoket", "The Specter Bridegroom", "The Mutability of Literature" and "The Art of Bookmaking" wherein the essence of Irving's literary style is neatly conveyed in the following:"Being now in possesion of the secert, I sat down in a corner and watched the process of this book manufactory. I noticed one lean, bilious-looking wight, who sought none but the worst worm-eaten volumes, printed in black letter. He was evidentley constructing some work of profound erudition that would be purchased by every man who wished to be thought learned, placed upon a conspicuous shelf of his library, or laid upon his table, but never read. I observed him, now and then, draw a large fragment of biscuit out of his his pocket and gnaw; whether it was his dinner, or whether he was endeavoring to keep off that exhaustion of the stomach produced by much pondering over dry works, I leave to harder students than myself to determine."With a style that has emitted diverse emotions (Lord Byron "unashamedly wept" over the melancholy pieces "The Broken Heart", "The Widow and her Son" and "The Rural Funerals") and having enjoyed over a century and a half of eminent popularity, Washington Irving's "aim in life is to escape 'from the commonplace realities of the present' and to lose himself 'among the shadowy grandeurs of the past' ". Readers tuned in to this philosophy continue to enjoy Irving's literary prose (by buying and re-reading his works), and also, by buying and reading, secure his reputation as a master in American Literature. When one has digested "The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon" and "Diedrich Knickerboker's History of New York", one has embraced the essential works of Washington Irving and most would then assuredly join me in saying that he rates eminately in American Literary standing.

Irving's life was an enthralling tale of world travel, high society, and other, bookish diversions. He would have been, judging from the biography provided at the front of the edition I read, one of the most fascinating tale tellers of his day. That comes across in the Sketchbook; but we also get an idea of the wicked, roguish sense of humor, that impeccable feeling for satire that Irving could deploy even upon those people he loved most. The Sketchbook was written largely in England, at first as Irving was inheriting the family law business from his infirm brother. Rankling under the confines of business that can seem insufferable to the creative mind, Irving turned his full energy to writing. These sketches reflect a man passionate about many things, but who is always doctoring his reminiscences with timeless satire: Literature (The Art of Book Making and the Mutability of Literature, with, respectively, the writers of the new school being assaulted by the old favorites of western lit, and the talking book created in illustration of the fact of history's unkindness to many authors and receptivity to a few)is an abiding love to Irving, with every sketch preceded by a poem from antiquity to the works of Irving's coevals, and the stories themselves can make one believe Irving to have been downright pedantic. For what other reason would he break the flow of innumerable stories with lengthy and often only tangentially relevant allusions. Other stories, such as the delightful Christmas cycle and the numerous sketches with Shakespeare addenda, juxtapose Irving's love and ridicule of the English, especially the rural English, with their antediluvian customs (which Irving commends), and their increasing acquiescence to modern fashion (which he abhors). Ironically, the very people whom he often ridiculed as pretentious, bombastic, destructive, prejudiced, and insensitive, loved him, perhaps because, at the same time, he lauded them for their refinement and their characters so analagous to those of the American people, whom he proclaims a young people, while the British should be something like elder statesmen, big brothers if you will. The Sketchbook is delightful reading, if you can get past the author's bookishness and often archaic language.

Hebrew literature contains some of the most profound and most influential productions of the human spirit. It constitutes a potent factor in modern civilization, and possesses merits which place it far above most other literatures of the world. The common salutation of the Hebrew is “Peace,” while that of the Greeks is “Grace,” and that of the Romans, “Safety.” The Greek sought after grace, or intellectual and bodily perfection, and the power of artistic accomplishment. The Roman's ideal was strength and security of life and property.

Inspired by Jane Austen's most beloved Pride and Prejudice characters. Discover the romance and comedy of Villa Fortuna where Little Italy collides with the country club set … at a hair salon. Dr. Elizabeth Fairchild lived an orderly and focused life in Los Angeles until … an unexpected death, a questionable inheritance, and an eighty-year-old Mafia vendetta required a trip home to New York City's Little Italy neighborhood in the Bronx. After thirteen years of running from her Italian-American upbringing, Elizabeth dreaded returning to the ethnic world of colorful hand gestures, passionate arguments, and living with her two stereotypical sisters in their rundown apartment above a bakery. Her plan: get in, take care of business, celebrate Christmas, and then escape as quickly as possible. However, returning to the Bronx assailed the senses like her mother's lasagna. She didn't count on Italian pastry, homemade wine, a beauty parlor, and the enticement of a dashing plastic surgeon known as Michelangelo. Will Elizabeth flee her childhood home where the foundation of faith and famiglia is so strong? Or will she stay and embrace all the traditions that once embarrassed her? Should she succumb or resist her elder sister's admonishment, “Your home is where your heart is, and we are your heart—marinara, cannolis, the church, and the family! The whole shebang!" Authors Note: Even more Austenesque than Denial of Conscience and Lucky 13, Villa Fortuna's original plotline has all the elements of a romantic comedy focusing on pride and prejudice. The character's names are changed and I have borrowed some of their characteristics, creating my own tale of hard-won, contemporary love.

Review Voted Favorite JAFF Modern for 2015 ~ Just Jane 1813 "As a proud Italian-American, I caught myself laughing out loud throughout this entire story! Cat Gardiner's execution of delivering to readers an Italian-American Christmas JAFF, with a twist of sexy on the side, is brilliant." ~ Just Jane 1813 5*"Romeo and Juliet meets Pride and Prejudice in this hilarious, sweet, and oh so sexy modern adaptation." ~ Margie Must Reads 5*"This book is Pride and Prejudice Italian style. The characters are exactly how I would imagine them if the families were Italian. The author's idea of using her heritage in this book made for a spectacular novel. ~ Half Agony, Half Hope"I am not entirely familiar with Italian culture, but this book made me see a glimpse of what makes it good and easy to relate to and love--close family ties, love of food and life, the colorful and vibrant language, and the positive outlook. Cat Gardiner's voice is so humorous and entertaining! Her characters are unforgettable, and she writes her setting in such a vivid image that it made me feel as if I was standing there, watching everything with my own eyes." ~ Of Pens and Pages 5*

Cat Gardiner always writes amazing stories, but I have to admit I almost didn't buy this one. When I read the sample I kept saying to myself 'too ethnic, too complicated' -- boy am I glad I didn't listen to myself, had faith in Cat drawing me in, and purchased and read......Oh. My. Gosh. Others reviewing the book have sysnopsized (is that a word?) the story much better than I ever could. In fact, I wrote a comment under Erika's review, because she seemed to have had pretty much the same experience as I did! Once I got passed the ethnicity (I am not Italian, but have a very close dear friend who is) and I got into the lingo, I was able to read full speed ahead. I think most of us that read CG's novels is addicted to her stories to the point of reading way passed bedtime! :-) I honestly don't think Cat can get them out fast enough to make us all happy! Back to VF.....the two things that made this story really a hoot were Nicki who, as Erika pointed out in her review (or was it one of the other reviewers? no matter....) made a distinct maturing thru the course of the book. I've never really liked Lydia as a character even though she's necessary for balance, but Nicki, after a few chapters, was a hoot! So was the next-to-last chapter. Again....O.M.G. I wasn't expecting that one! I didn't see that coming, but it was a great, amazing idea for a kicker! I also read a lot of JAFF (as my Kindles can attest to!) and there are many good books out there written by authors that tell some terrific stories, but this one may become one of my top favorites really quick -- I am going to start re-reading it tonight -- and to think I almost, just almost, didn't buy it! Cat.....you are my hero! : -) (On the cover, which ones are Elizabeth's legs? The middle? That would be my guess!)

By Erika L Hoemke ~~~I received an ARC of Villa Fortuna from Cat Gardiner for an honest review!~~~Cat Gardiner is a master of modern day P&P!!! She is an excellent story teller who gives you enough detail to allow you to imagine what is happening as if you're right there in the story, but she doe not overload you with detail that is distracts you from the actual scene. The story was well written (even for an ARC) and flowing. It has great comedic timing and many times I found myself giggling at all the antics of the sisters.Villa Fortuna is a modernized P&P-esque story that initially I found it was a bit hard to get into because all the main characters from P&P had different names, except Elizabeth. Though as I continued to read, and descriptions of each character was uncovered, I was able to match the new names to the characters I love. I was also able to read more easily and really get into the story. This story starts out with Elizabeth coming “home” to Little Italy in the Bronx from where she resides in L.A. Because of her past relationships and experiences with men (especially American-Italian men) she has totally thrown over her American-Sicilian roots to make a new life for herself. She is a up-and-coming Podiatrist to the stars. She is home because her great-aunt (prozia) has died and the reading of her last will and testament states that she and her sisters (Regina and Nichole) have inherited Villa Fortuna. This property has been at the fore-front of a battle of ownership between two Italian mob families for 80 yrs. In the years that Elizabeth has been away and “running” from her roots, she has become a bit jaded and prejudiced to the point that she looks at everything with a critical eye when she is “home”.Dr Michael Garin is brilliant cosmetic surgeon, though has followed in the footsteps his father layed out and taken over the Manhattan Aesthetic Associates group that has prompted a “body fan club” for him on Facebook (some women are CRAZY!!). His grandmother Stella Russo De Luca (Lady Catherine incarnation) is leading the vendetta against the Clemente sisters to “regain” Villa Fortuna. She pushes Dr Garin hard to be a silent investor to purchase Villa Fortuna from the Clemente sisters. The Clemente sisters have several stipulations to complete in order to inherit Villa Fortuna: 1. No selling Villa Fortuna, 2. Go to confession and repent their sins, 3. Take occupancy after attending Holy Mass once a month for 3 consecutive months!!!! It is attending to #1 that Elizabeth and Dr Garin have a “Meet Cute,” though it is not until 3 months later when they actually meet each other. This sets off a whirlwind romance while she is again visiting her sisters for the holidays. Because Elizabeth still goes by her married name neither suspect who the other actually is. Oh boy, though when the truth, and some manipulated secrets, comes out so do the Italian claws!!!! I will not spoil the fun of what happens when the Italian claws come out!!!I adored the character growth that was demonstrated by several characters throughout the book. It was so refreshing to see how far they came over the course of the book. I loved the interaction between Elizabeth and Dr Garin, how nothing mattered except what they felt for each other, and how rapidly emotions can emerge when the relationship is not based fully on the physical. This story was amazing, very gripping once I was able to sort the who's who of characters out. I had several late sleepless nights because I couldn't put it down!!!! While talking to a reading group friend, we both agreed that the books only fault was that it was too short!!! We also agreed that “it needs a sequel to cover an engagement, moving in together, and the wedding!!! Oh and maybe first child!!!” Not to put any pressure on our dear Cat Gardiner!!!!I would highly recommend this to all JAFFers, though I would give it a mature rating only because of some of Nichole’s antics and because of all the innuendo!!!! Again Cat, I will automatically say that you have a fan in me for life!! Thank you for the stories that keep me distracted and sleepless!!!! I look forward to more from you in the future.

Sisters and Stereotypes By Meredith (Austenesque Reviews) TYPE OF AUSTENESQUE NOVEL: Pride and Prejudice-Inspired, Modern-day Adaptation, Mature Audiences OnlySETTING: Modern-day Belmont, Bronx, New YorkMAIN CHARACTERS:- Dr. Elizabeth Fairchild/Lizzy Clemente/Doc Hollywood: Middle sister, is off in LA working as a podiatrist to celebrity clientele. Has some hang-ups about her family and their Italian-American stereotypical behaviors.- Regina “Gina” Clemente: Oldest sister, works as a hairstylist, is very sweet, but don’t underestimate her, she has a sharp mind and can easily disarm the enemy.- Nichole “Nikki” Clemente: Youngest sister, has a mouth on her like you wouldn’t believe, and dresses like a streetwalker. Also works as a hairstylist and is fiercely loyal and protective of her loved ones.- Dr. Michael Garin/Michelangelo/Altar Boy: A cosmetic surgeon who currently runs his father’s practice, where he spends most of his days doing injections and body-sculpting surgeries for the affluent and elite. A very admired and sought after bachelor, may also be a bit of a germaphobe.SYNOPSIS: The Clemente sisters are brought together to inherit a desirable piece of property from their great-aunt. The Villa Fortuna building transforms Gina’s and Nikki’s lives by giving them a chance to open their own salon; it also brings Lizzy home for a long break where she makes some important discoveries about herself and meets an unbelievably amazing guy…WHAT I LOVED:- Utterly Charmed: The Clemente sisters have me completely and utterly charmed! Especially Gina and Nikki – they embrace their culture, have huge hearts, and display so many delightful personality quirks that one cannot help but love them! I loved seeing Lizzy’s generous act of charity to the homeless man and witnessing Nikki come to the rescue multiple times wielding her awesome weapon of choice!- Full of Heart: This story doesn’t have pride and prejudice as its main conflict. While there are misunderstandings and mistaken assumptions, the central themes are more about stereotypes and learning to accept who you are and where you came from. The lesson is an important one as many people can relate to the desire to leave home and feeling ashamed of one’s family and background.- The Community, The Family: The descriptions of Arthur Avenue, Messina Pastry Shop, and Palhairmo are colorful, vivid, and warm. The Clemente sisters are so lucky to be surrounded by such a loving and vibrant adopted family. Reading this book is like being invited to an Italian-American home, eating until all your buttons pop off, and feeling embraced with the fiercest love possible. I loved my visit to the Bronx and would gladly return, just for the food and characters alone!- Cat Gardiner Essentials: You may know from my previous reviews, that I adore all the little creative touches that Ms. Gardiner includes in the world of her novels (i.e. blog posts, spotify lists, etc.). I was so happy to see that continue in Villa Fortuna, with over half a dozen Italian recipes woven throughout the book and a very handy Italian glossary in the back (which I referred to often!) I love these clever little extras!WHAT I WASN’T TOO FOND OF:(Disclaimer: I was fond of everything, Cat Gardiner’s books are splendid!) But I will admit that about halfway through the book I found myself thinking the romance was too uncomplicated and lacking conflict. I’m not a fan of perfect, insta-love relationships, and Lizzy and Mike, while completely adorable, seemed to teetering closely towards perfection. I shouldn’t have doubted though, because Cat Gardiner definitely served a heaping amount of tension, heart-ache, and gripping uncertainty later on in the story! Well done!CONCLUSION:Villa Fortuna is an amazing heart-warming romance of about finding yourself, finding home, and finding happiness! Filled with nods to Pride and Prejudice, personality, and passion this is an all-consuming reading experience you should not miss, whether you are Italian-American or not! I highly recommend!NOTE: Due to suggestive language, adult situations, and some use of profanity, I’d recommend this for Mature Audiences only.Austenesque Reviews
