There are all kinds of first things one can look back upon; I mean by that the first things of all. There is the little toddling journey across the floor, with father's arms stretched out to help one, and mother's smile to greet one when the adventurous journey is over. And there are other baby things, of course. Then there come the big things which one can never forget.

Wirts Heather was a young idealist, who wants to be an illustrator, She is soon forced into reality as she finds the businesses who employ illustrators will only consider males. To survive she takes a position with a divorced newspaper owner, as a live in nanny for his two children. Her maternal instincts soon tell her that the children are under strict parental control demanding behavior normally not learned until much older. The story line in many ways parallels "The Sound of Music" . Her employer has been devastated by his first wife's abandonment of him and the children, and is resolved never to fall in love again. He is engaged to a young socialite, it will be a match of convenience for both of them. Then as the newspaperman exposes corruption through an investigative reporter, his fiancee's father is implicated. Now things start to get real interesting!

A pleasure to read, lively- GREAT for teens/young adults too By Trancelucence NOTE: the other review here is for a different book, not this one!Read this to my mom who has some dementia. It's descriptive, dramatic, yet simple enough narratively to engage and maintain her interest. I love the turn of the century prose- colorful, lively, but not as cerebral or requiring the mental gymnastics of, say, Jane Austen or Elizabeth Gaskell (both of whom I love). Simple but dramatic- comprehensible action and motives, peppered with surprises. Good pace, it flows.***SPOILER ALERT*** A spoiled, headstrong (spirited!) young girl adores her father- but perhaps he's not what she imagines. She's simultaneously wrestling with values- what kind of person will she opt to be? She has NO desire to be like other young women. This would be a GREAT book for a tween or teen girl, but it's suitable for women of all ages. We were on tenderhooks throughout to see what happened. The best part is Heather's spirit. Recommended!
