In 1913 James Joyce sent the initial chapter of his novel, “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man” to the avant-garde American poet, Ezra Pound. Pound was so impressed by the writing that he urged Joyce to have the work serialized in the London literary magazine, “The Egotist”. Joyce’s initial idea was for a 63 chapter autobiographical novel, which he later abandoned for this more condensed version of five chapters. Dispensing with strict realism and making extensive use of free indirect speech, the novel explores the principal character’s rebellion against the Irish and Catholic conventions that were so much a part of his upbringing and that ultimately culminates in his exile from his mother country. “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man” has been named one the top 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century by the Modern Library, and along with “Ulysses” and “Dubliners”, established Joyce as one the leading voices in literary modernism.

Joyce's internal descriptions of the development of consciousness and of thought and language are a fascinating look into the human mind. He does this with an immediacy that is spellbinding at times, tedious at times, and perplexing at times. This difficult book is exciting to re-read after having been forced to read it in college.it is helpful to have the Sparks primer handy to help through the difficult spots, to guide and explain. Otherwise much of the incredible richness could be lost.

Joyce's language in this book is accessible and as many critics have said of his language, the most elegant and meaningful use of English, partly because of its Irish origin. Likewise, Stephen Daedelus as the hero is himself a classic of erudition and a suffering and painful life.This is entirely worth the effort of reading a difficult book.
