A Mixed Bag of Christmas Stories By Steve Campbell This book contains an interesting mixture of touching, quirky, and tongue-in-cheek Christmas stories. Among the touching ones are "They Saw a Great Light," "Daily Bread," "Stand and Wait," and "Love Is the Whole." "Christmas Waits in Boston" and "The Survivor's Story" fit under the category of quirky. If you like your Christmas stories to have a strange twist at the end, the latter one is especially for you. "The Two Princes" is a morality tale for children and a bit preachy for me. "The Story of Oello" is somewhat imperialistic and paternalistic. "Alice's Christmas Tree" is a somewhat charming tale of the reformation of some ruffians. "The Same Christmas in Old England and New" is a rambling, tongue-in-cheek comparison between the way the Puritans who landed at Plymouth Rock celebrated (or didn't) Christmas and the way the British and French royalty did at the same time. I found most of these stories worth reading, but you may be tempted to skip a few.

A Reminder of How the Celebration of Christmas Has Changed By Steve Chattin This is a charming collection of stories, mostly set in New England in the 1800's, that depict how Christmas was celebrated then...or not!Seems that Christmas was not always a tree with dozens, if not hundreds, of gifts spread around the tree. Consumerism not being then what it is today, the gift might simply be a letter from a long missing loved one, or simply the return through a blizzard of a husband who had left only hours ago on a mission of mercy. The relief of the anxiety of waiting for the person or merely news that the loved one had survived was often the best gift to be had. There are sleigh rides, carolling through the night and selfless giving to fill one with the warmth and joy of the season. Will this book set your hair on fire? No!Will this book make you wish for a simpler, more meaningful time? Oh, yes!
