Matthew Gregory Lewis, who professed to have translated this romance out of the German, very much, I believe, as Horace Walpole professed to have taken The Castle of Otranto from an old Italian manuscript, was born in 1775 of a wealthy family. His father had an estate in India and a post in a Government office. His mother was daughter to Sir Thomas Sewell, Master of the Rolls in the reign of George III. She was a young mother; her son Matthew was devoted to her from the first.

The hero is heroic and the villain duly wicked, the lady is fine and dainty and all the cast is thrown into a marvelous turmoil only to be confoundingly set to rights in the end. The more I read these old romance novels the more annoyed I am that I keep seeing horrid movies based on lousy books. Why not make a movie out of this little gem? Or the Monk? Are they not properly horrible and exciting?A joy to read, especially if you're of a more romantic sensibility.

Or maybe it was just written about someone with murder in his heart but with a mother who taught him better and he was determined not to do what his mother taught him. I probably just cannot understand why anyone would want to choose wrong over right and live with those consequences. I don't know how he chose because I could not finish the book.
