An intimate narrative history of porcelain, structured around five journeys through landscapes where porcelain was dreamed about, fired, refined, collected, and coveted. Extraordinary new nonfiction, a gripping blend of history and memoir, by the author of the award-winning and best-selling international sensation,The Hare with the Amber Eyes.

In The White Road, best-selling author and artist Edmund de Waal gives us an intimate narrative history of his lifelong obsession with porcelain, or "white gold". A potter who has been working with porcelain for more than 40 years, de Waal describes how he set out on five journeys to places where porcelain was dreamed about, refined, collected and coveted - and that would help him understand the clay's mysterious allure. From his studio in London, he starts by travelling to three "white hills" - sites in China, Germany, and England that are key to porcelain's creation. But his search eventually takes him around the globe and reveals more than a history of cups and figurines; rather, he is forced to confront some of the darkest moments of 20th-century history.

Part memoir, part history, part detective story, The White Road chronicles a global obsession with alchemy, art, wealth, craft, and purity. In a sweeping yet intimate style that recalls The Hare with the Amber Eyes, de Waal gives us a singular understanding of "the spectrum of porcelain" and the mapping of desire.

The White Road: a more personal meditation from the author of "The Hare with Amber Eyes" By Merrily Baird How long did it take to be hooked on "The White Road: Journey Into an Obsession," a history of and meditation on the glories of porcelain? In my case, this occurred just a few pages into the prologue of Edmund de Waal's newest book. The opening paragraph is set in Jiangxi, China, where roughly a 1000 years ago porcelain was first developed. Like a great number of others in the book, this paragraph is rich with poetic images, words so pleasing that they invited underlining. Two pages later, the focus switched to de Waal's own work in porcelain, and here I discovered his talent for sensuous description, description that will undoubtedly please the world of ceramicists, whose chosen artistic form is a hands-on sensuous adventure indeed. At the heart of the book is a far-flung pilgrimage undertaken by de Waal as he and the history of porcelain move from its invention in China to its diffusion to Germany, France, and the British Isles. The author handles this material deftly, aided by the fascinating characters who several hundred years ago made it possible for porcelain production to take root in Europe. It is a somewhat more tedious aspect of the book that this core story is interrupted by less soaring language that recounts the routine challenges of de Waal's busy life .So what does this add up to? Perhaps a book that is best described as a personal journal wherein short entries alternate with the longer, abrupt changes in historical time and location occur, and the mundane mixes with the sublime. All told, "The White Road" reminds me of the Japanese literary tradition known as "zuihitsu," which Wikipedia aptly defines as "consisting of loosely connected personal essays and fragmentary ideas that typically respond to the author's surroundings."

I had read The Hare earlier in the year and when i saw this book i knew i had to read it. As a ceramicist and one who works in porcelain this was a perfect book for me. I enjoyed learning more about the history of this wonderful clay that i love and Edmund de Waal's very deep connection with it.

Chandler A luminous, pleasing, slightly obsessive book about the history of porcelain, de Waal's life as as a potter and his travels to China, Dresden, Devonshire, North Carolina and (disturbingly) Nazi Germany to explore and illuminate key moments in the history of porcelain. Since his teen age years de Waal has has been enchanted by its translucent whiteness, elegance and fragility. He has made thousands of elegant objects with it, Like his earller book The Hare with the Amber Eyes, The White Road straddles, transcends (or defies) genre boundaries. Highly recommended,
