Primetime: A Novel Primetime explores the idea of celebrity through the viewpoint of a grocery manager in a small Midwestern town. Sam explores the meaning of celebrity after he is the lone survivor of a rare drive by shooting in his hometown Waukaponeda. He describes employees, customers and conversations he has in order to finally come to an understand and an acceptance of what celebrity and fame means, at least in a small town. Interspersed are 7 pdf files of documents from his job. Primetime is the story of fame and celebrity not on a national worldwide scale but what its like in a small town and Sam trying to reconcile that being the lone survivor of a drive-by shooting, which gives him his own odd fame, coupled with his position at work, he struggles not only with survivors guilt but the “what now.” While inspired by true events and actual people, fame is still an incredibly curious thing. It means different things to different people in different places around the world. Fame is not the same in New York and Los Angeles as it is in Dowagiac, Michigan or South Bend, Indiana.

About the Author Working at a grocery store for over 12 years now, working every position there and becoming one of the managers of a corporate chain store, I have seen and heard it all in the retail/service world. I had to get those stories, thoughts, feelings, and ways to escape out of my head. I had to write not out of compulsion but out of a love of writing. I grew up in a small town in Southwestern Michigan (coincidentally a town that no one that visits knows how to pronounce correctly), originally attending school to become a music therapist but the tapping of the keyboard was more addicting and found myself attending Andrews University in Berrien Springs, MI. I play the drums, I love wearing ties, and I will eat all your Oreo's.

Or, like Brian Harrison brings out in his novel, 'Primetime' in quite different circumstances, you feel a bit like a celebrity~the choices here in American stores are overwhelming, help descends upon you in every department. ( I said yes once and got a cross country tour of the store~ who knew the tartar sauce would be in the frozen fish section instead of by the fresh fish?~ and a dramatic retelling by a cashier on break about how he went fishing once in Key West. Hello, Hemingway. Which brings me to praise how Harrison brings out the quirkiness of small town America, of every demographic, how they must all eventually go to the grocery store. We never think about the cashier, how they are on their feet for hours, what they think of us. Sam, in 'Primetime,' has witnessed and become a victim and only survivor of a crime, and Harrison beautifully brings out Sam's fear and loathing in the aftermath. Among his chapters are Scheduling, Preparation, Work Ethic, Kindergarten. Nightmare. You live with Sam, as he recounts that nightshift. He takes you behind those plastic, "flappy" doors as my kids would call them, and into Sam's life outside the store. You find your self laughing at times, hanging at others, but ultimately attached to Sam who struggles with a newfound identity. "These people do not live here," I tell my kids as I drag them to the store late at night for milk, but "he caught a swordfish!" I tell them as we scurry after the cashier for tartar sauce, a loose wheel twirling. There's always a loose wheel. 'Primetime" is big time meets small town~ a must read.

By Victoria G I bought this book in the beginning for the simple fact that Brian is from my town and I see him at least once a week in our grocery store, I wanted to show my support since he was a local. After I began reading this book I couldn't put it down!! It was awesome!! I was very impressed and to say the least surprised I had no idea how talented of a writer he is!! Can't wait for the next one :)
