Unlike many of its contemporaries there are not a lot of "archaic" comments or phrasings that keep constantly reminding you this was written over a hundred years ago. Rather, the author has a very dry and understated sense of humor that keeps popping out at the most opportune moments to liven the story up. The characters are well developed and very believable.Faithful readers will be happy to know there are no typos, misspellings, or blatant grammatical errors - a relief from some of the current un-edited stuff that surrounds us.I highly recommend this story and I will certainly seek out some of the author's other works.

Walker Blue Not a bad yarn, but not up the adventurous standard Stockton set in the prequel to this, "The Adventures of Captain Horn." Engaging and well written, just not a spellbinder. I would recommend it if you've read "Captain Horn," as several of the characters in that novel are continued in this one.
