Sweet Love is a collection of twelve short stories by award-winning author Alyce Miller, already a winner of the Ellen Gilchrist Prize for Excellence in Short Fiction, the Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction, the Mary McCarthy Prize for Short Fiction, the Lawrence Prize from the Michigan Quarterly Review, and the Kenyon Review Award for Literary Excellence in Fiction. This is a writer at the peak of her literary talent. The new collection, Sweet Love, is a ride in a car with wild young women free and loose for the first time, and not sure how to deal with that freedom as they confront their anxieties in facing the unfairness of life. It's a missing college girl, and the misplaced guilt of one of the last people on earth to see her alive, it is the weighty truth of the secret of flight, prison love, sex trafficking in Bangkok, adoption, too many things for comfort, but you simply can't stand to look away. Alyce Miller has the ability to take you by the hand and lead you like a voyeur to peek through life's windows and the cracks in its doors and she does it in a language that flows to carry the narrative like a fast-moving stream.

Review The "love" in these twelve stories is a lot of things but it is rarely "sweet". Again and again Miller's characters pick "the rottenest apple off the tree, worms and all" and are left to face the consequences. A luckless hitchhiker steps into a carload of teenage girls out for blood, a novelist stumbles into a cruel romance with a housewife who is a better writer than he is, a retired Navy officer is abandoned by his deceptively obedient Thai wife. The stories, set mostly in California and Bangkok, are intelligently imagined and compelling, and the characters, ranging from a murdered college girl, to an inmate in San Quentin, to a pious black churchwoman, are well-drawn and sadly believable as they settle for lives that at least duplicate "the gutteral hum of love." --Molly Giles, author of Iron Shoes, winner of the Flannery OConnor Award for Short Fiction. In SWEET LOVE, with rich prose, Alyce Miller employs her considerable skill as a wordsmith and a keen observer of human nature. She casts an unflinching gaze on the 21st century. International in scope, a literary page-turner, these stories - the characters, the images - will lodge in your imagination and take you for a life-altering ride. --Patricia Henley, author of Hummingbird House, finalist for the National Book AwardsIn SWEET LOVE we see a writer at the peak of her powers in her art. In this collection she takes you to places that are true, and real, and unsettling, and that you know in your heart are the nature of love for far too many of us. --Russell Scott, author of The Hard Times The "love" in these twelve stories is a lot of things but it is rarely "sweet." Writing breadth and excellence By Russell Scott Miller looks at love from the multifaceted and confusing perspective of an array of women just trying to find a way to love in the modern world. Her writing carries the gravitas of first hand experience. It isn't always pretty to look at, but it reflects the world today, without maudlin sentimentality. Worth reading, writing from a gifted storyteller.
