Photography of felines for a fellow or femme to fathom By Eric Sedensky The author offered me a gratis copy of this book electronically because I had reviewed another pet photography book. I turn down about 95% of the books I am offered for free, mainly because so many are poorly written, but also because very few interest me. But, as a cat owner and a passionate student of photography, this book seemed to be in my wheelhouse, so I accepted the offer and read the book. Here is my honest review.I think the main thing I like about this book is that, even though it claims not to be about learning photography, it actually covers quite a bit about how to use a camera, depth of field, aperture, exposure, lenses to use, and the like. In particular, there are generous explanations of lighting techniques and strategies, as well as many sample photos of the author’s cats to demonstrate the techniques being taught and the ideas brought out in the book. Of course, there are also extensive pointers and examples for how to deal with felines as photography subjects, and the author’s two cats are very different, both in appearance and behavior. This allows the author to explore many different and diverse aspects of cat photography, making for an interesting and intelligent reading experience.I will say, however, that toward the end, when the author began to trot out some specific examples of photos he had taken and the special methodologies involved to keep his cats in the shot, my interest began to wane somewhat. To be honest, I just didn’t care what kind of shots the author was interested in. I would have preferred that those shots, instead of just providing some creative examples, had expounded further on some technical details. I would also have preferred to have had more examples of similar (if not the same) photos taken under different conditions, to maybe drive home the points and limit the amount of experimentation needed once the reading was complete. It seemed, too, that the quality of the book also waned at the end, as typos and misses increased. (The book, however, is at a very high level technically, and for the most part is well edited and error “minimized”.)The strength of this book is the illustrations, which are expertly drawn and very demonstrative of the techniques being explained. Together with the author’s own photographic proficiency, which is detailed very well in this book, it really makes some of the less obvious photographic techniques more approachable. In the end, no doubt, the reader should be able to take beautiful pictures of their cats, as the title of the book says. (Whether or not these will be of interest to anybody else is another matter.)Somebody who is a new cat owner or only just starting out in photography could do very well and save themselves a lot of time and effort by reading this book. Expert photographers could focus (sorry) on the bits dealing with cats, while cat lovers could use their darlings to fuel their interest in photography. That is to say, this book isn’t perfect, but is has a lot to offer cat lovers and photographers alike, which is why I rated it at four stars.

Willett I have three dogs, four cats and a digital SLR that I admit I don't use to it's fullest capability. This book not only demystifies a lot of camera and photography jargon, but it also offers some great pointers on how to deal with subjects who may be lounging in bright sun, hiding under a bed or otherwise completely disinterested in having their pictures taken — not the best circumstances for taking good photos.The book is well structured, and an easy read on my iPad's Kindle app, which is particularly important when reading How To books. The pictures and illustrations clearly help support the text. Chapters on composition, preparation, camera settings and lighting are accessible for a beginner. There are also sections on how to take great candids and portraits, and an appendix that features detailed but fully understandable explanations of many of the more technical camera, flash and photography concepts.I loved the money-saving gems in the book, like using a white kitchen garbage bag to create a homemade light diffuser. And it's obvious that the author knows and loves cats, offering tips about how to work with them, leveraging innate cat characteristics like their curiosity, and learning what works for a cat's individual personality. This comes through in the photos of the author's two cats — Archie and Lucy — featured throughout the book.Months after purchasing this book, I still refer to it — even before I reach for some of my more complex photography books. And it's not just because one of my cats is sleeping on them.

It is a very clearly detailed tutorial on how to get great results, and it works!The book is excellent just for the information on technique and equipment alone, and that is only one facet.Almost every page is chock-full of useful information.The illustrations and explanations are easy to understand.I am not a sophisticated photographer, so I learned a lot of technique that can translate to photographing any subject, not just cats. I learned more from this book than I did from my first photography class!The ideas on working with cats were very helpful.The information and examples on editing inspired me try some new things and I was more than pleased with the results.I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in photography, but especially to anyone interested in photographing their feline.
