James I have a deep interest in horse character types and was disappointed with this book. I followed the plan to type my horse, but there was no pattern to it. The five-element approach feels a bit hit-and-miss to me. Once a person begins to mix and match the five elements, there is too much variation to keep a straight and meaningful picture of what it all means in real life. The examples in the book are individual horses kept in very constrained environments with very specific jobs to perform. It has certainly helped me understand my horses on a different level. If you are not quite connecting with your horse I definitely recommend reading this book, it might give you a whole new perspective on your relationship with your horse.

Story delighted By Paul Haist A simple story carefully crafted with a plausible plot, strong characterization and a resolution that, despite its predictability, is deeply satisfying. The down east vernacular is charming. In the first few pages I thought, "Maybe this is too quaint for me." It wasn't at all so. The story delighted me.

This book is a powerful read.Sean, a veteran of the Afghan war, returns to his Scottish home, traumatized by what he experienced and lost. In the face of a world he now perceives to be tainted and warped, he struggles to bring forth the instinct for self preservation which would allow his healing to begin. We accompany him on this journey of alienation and on-again/off-again casual determination. He struggles daily with whether it is even worth it to hoist himself out of the painful murk in order to achieve what he believes can be, at most, a life that is tolerable. Slowly, ever so slowly, he creeps forward… Although this book is fiction, one has no doubt that the story has been repeatedly echoed in reality - name any war - any country. I can't help wondering whether the author also suffered from some sort of PTSD to so exquisitely be able to describe the day-to-day battle of trying to re-gain a somewhat balanced life perspective. This book is a rich read with a well-developed story. It not only ushers the reader through the twisted landscape of Sean's mind, but through a sliver of the beautiful Scottish countryside as well.

Following the main character's service as a marine, he struggles with with his return to society and finding reasons to live.The author has an excellent understanding of PTSD and the impact of war . Each supporting character is well drawn and establishes herself or himself in your mind. The story unfolds and invites the reader to become fully engaged in Sean's inner dialogue and the day to day challenges.There is a cinematic feel as the story unfolds the reader easily imagines the action. Of course her appreciation of Scotland's country side is wonderful.I am hoping there is a sequel!

The author is a friend, and I was terribly nervous that I would hear her voice the entire time while reading it. Instead, I heard the voice of Sean, the book's main character, and the distinct voices of all the other characters, woven together into a touching and colorful storyline portraying Sean's return from Afghanistan and his attempt to return to a "normal" life. While the story focuses on Sean's personal struggle with PTSD, that is only one aspect of the book, and of Sean. This book is also about family, love, recovery, and sense of self -- a fantastic debut novel.

I picked this as my first book to learn the actual story of William the Conqueror. The text is easy yet very informative. This is a good starter book before moving into a more detailed biography. Jacob Abbott gives a short intro into William's Viking ancestors who were the first Dukes of Normandy. Then we get a chapter on William's father, Duke Robert who named his illegitimate son heir. From their William had to overcome his mark of birth and assert himself as a worthy heir to Normandy. William was always proving himself as he grew into a great warrior and leader. He fights off would be relatives who seek to take his throne and even challenges the King of France. Mr. Abbott explains how he came to be named heir to the English throne by his cousin Edward, Saxon King of England. Then we have the build up and ultimate crossing of the English Channel and the battle of Hastings in 1066. Finally we move to the beginning of his reign of England and the "Normanization" of Britain begins. Ultimately his death is caused by his oldest son being in constant rebellion and William is wounded on campaign. Although his end was not glorious, his legacy lives on in Britain today. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn about William, Normandy and the Battle of Hastings.

Great Historical Read By Jeff Launiere William the Conqueror, King of England is my 25th Great Grandfather, which made me interested in the history of this man, and his influence over England. Reading this gave me insight into how he got his various monikers such as; William the Bastard, William the Conqueror, William the Great, and of course his reign as King of England. If I happened onto this book just for the history, rather than family ties, I would have enjoyed the good and bad of William the Conqueror and family.

I would have preferred if it had included more of the actual information about the landing, but the book was still an excellent read and enjoyable. I would recommend to those who pursue historical understanding of events.

Hussenet Zola in French (I have never read a translation so I cannot say) is a writer of incredible precision with unswerving artistic vision of what is both beautiful and fascinating in human affairs, this is a book about the very poor and about the slow fall into the complete abysmal incomprehensible demoralization, hopelessness and despair of alcoholism, a subject not popular with lesser writers who invariable elevate the mediocrity of their skills as writers and/or storytellers with reliably bourgeois and glamorous subjects. But this is the naked truth told with such force and skill as to drive what would otherwise be an unbearable descent into the very saddest and most ordinary in the human condition. Zola understood the cruelty of a society that hinges on a free market economy at the other end of an immense colonial empire that left for those at the very bottom the suicidal escape into substance abuse, something with which we are surrendered today and which has not really changed. Zola was after all a consummate journalist who understood the machination and intricacies of an international capital like Paris, this is the Paris that makes possible the beauty we see today, a singular story among millions of the people whose bones lay forgotten under the cobblestone of our great boulevards.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A world-class schemer dominates this 1920 mystery By Patto Linford Pratt is a suave and clever law clerk looking for a chance to better himself. Opportunity knocks when he gets possession of a rich man's will that would mean the ruin of the present heirs. His thoughts turn to blackmail, since he assumes the wrongful heirs would pay a high price to hang onto their wealth.Pratt's personal hero is the subtle, wily diplomat Talleyrand. Self-interest is Pratt's guiding principle. We watch him pondering, planning and scheming his way through one complication after another. I was a little uncomfortable at first at spending so much time inside Pratt's unpleasant head. But we sense from the start that Pratt will get his comeuppance (since this is a mystery, not a tragedy). Watching Pratt's gradual and complex downfall is fun.There's a love story that thrives in the midst of Pratt's machinations. There are suspicious deaths and disappearances to keep things lively. And there are plenty of interesting characters. The investigators include a nice mix of amateurs and professionals - a clever old lawyer, a detective, a private inquiry agent, and a young man in love.The Talleyrand Maxim was first published in 1920. I enjoyed this book, although it's not my favorite J. S. Fletcher mystery. But Fletcher can always be counted on to tell a gripping tale. His mysteries were so popular in his day that they were stocked in abundance in railway bookstalls. A Fletcher mystery was the ideal quick read then, and still is.

Here multiple sleuths come together and unravel the snarls made by multiple villains. In the end, at least one villain gets off far too lightly, but overall satisfying.

By Noreen O'Connor This is one of Von Arnim's very best novels, full of surprising wit and sometimes caustic criticism of the lonely existence of an intelligent British woman in a turn-of-the-century aristocratic German household. In particular, the childbirth scenes are chilling, and reminiscent of Charlotte Perkins Gilman's The Yellow Wallpaper, though Von Arnim typically treats the topic with more humor. The ending is as brilliant as those of her contemporary Edith Wharton.

By Amazon customer The main character here, a young woman named Ingeborg, was the daughter of a strict and domineering father, a Bishop. She was raised to always follow the proper etiquette of Christian behavior and proper society. She did as she was told and never questioned or disobeyed her father. But sometimes she wanted to be free - at least for a short while - of her father's control and the confinement of her household. So, when it became necessary for her to travel to London for a week to have some dental work done, she was full of anticipation. And when she saw a poster in a shop window advertising a tour leaving for Lucerne for seven days, she impulsively joined it. It changed her life forever.At times, I found the writing here a bit repetitive - a bit drawn out. Halfway through, I almost put it down. But I read elsewhere that I must not miss the last part of the book. They were right. Make sure you finish this book. What begins as just another good book by Von Arnim becomes a brilliant book by it's ending. And do read the introduction (although I prefer to read it after I have read the book). You learn that much of this story mirrors the Author's own life. I couldn't get this story out of my head for days.

The Pastor's Wife By Cristina S Gheorghe Elizabeth von Arnim , known to readers for her Enchanted April which was turned into a delightful movie a few years ago, succeeds in writing a feminist take on a typical Jane Austen situation, dealing with the quintessential career of young women at the end of the 19th century: marriage. In this entertaining novel, the sheltered young daughter of an English country pastor is wooed with extreme speed by a decisive German pastor, gets married against her family's wishes and expectations ( and maybe even her own...), and shortly after her wedding meets a famous and self-centered artist who decides, again without consulting her, to make her his muse and lover. All the men portrayed in Arnim's novel with a subtle and witty brush are revealed to be monuments of selfishness; their lack of attention to their spouses, daughters or lovers reaches absurdity! The young woman's growth into a sharper awareness of her submissive position and her subsequent shaking free of the patriarchal shackles is followed by the readers with satisfaction and approval.This book is an extremely pleasant read.

Young Man Buys Newspaper and Grows Up By pippalou A good story about a wealthy young man who buys a newspaper just to make them stop printing things against his father (who is a quack doctor). The story centers around the struggles and difficult decisions the young man has to make as to whether to keep the paper going or let it die, and central to that is the fact that he eventually has to wake up to the fact that his father really is a quack. Good writing and good plot, although the book itself is a trifle long.

22 of 24 people found the following review helpful. Please note the title By J. Raimo As an earlier review failed to note, this is the translation of Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821-90). A noted Victorian literary figure, Burton produced a number of translations for middle eastern works with a very specific sense of them AS literature. This means a fine sense of freedom (i.e. the opposite of a 'literal' or scolarly tradition) among other things, as well as various hesitations in what could and could not be published at the time. At his best, Burton ignored these conventions rather shamelessly; this counts for a great deal of the fun in reading the book or any of his other works.Customers complaining about the quality of the translation, the "thrift edition" format favored by Dover Books - really a wonderful institution precisely for making such quality texts available at such low cost - or the lack of illustrations shouldn't blame research so much as simply read the title of the edition offered here. Readers (or perhaps 'customers' works better) seeking a nicer edition of the Burton text in particular should look towards The Kama Sutra of Vatsyayana (Modern Library Classics). Otherwise, there is the Illustrated Kama Sutra of the Burton text as well as scholarly, if still friendly editions like the Kamasutra (Oxford World's Classics). As an insightful customer noted in an earlier comment, the original text was not illustrated; the introduction to Oxford World Classic edition discusses this at length. But for $3.50, this makes for a wonderful starting point nevertheless.

We purchased the Kama Sutra and ever since the sex is better than ever, I have never helped her achieve climax so often. I definitely recommend it.

My boyfriend got mad that " his dog " was on the cover!He wants a bulldog real bad!. Anyway, I loved the recipes in this book. They are simple and healthy, with ingredients that I probably already have in the pantry most of the time. They also explain why the ingredients are good, and what ingredients to be careful of. These are Thanksgiving oriented recipes with a good variety of options. Honestly , I think people could eat these too... Maybe I won't mention where I got the recipes!I can't wait to see the Christmas edition.Doggy Verdict. " Mmmm Woof!" The little one approves too.

The recipes are health-oriented and varied, yet have many ingredients in common with each other, which makes shopping easier. The author's love and enthusiasm for dogs comes through every page.

I always have to stop the little kids from feeding the dog table scraps on the Holidays but this year the kids are going to get these treats to feed the dogs instead. Lets hope it works!
