In Afghanistan, Mitch saved Sean's life, but lost his own. Back home and out of the Marines for good, Sean's haunted by nightmares and guilt. He's also haunted by Mitch, who is with him everywhere, talking to him, cursing, and criticizing, following his every move. In the run-down streets of his childhood, Sean takes a job moving second-hand furniture with other misfits. When a former schoolmate employs him to clear her late father's house at Cauldhill Farm, he begins to uncover uncomfortable truths. As Sean confronts the hostile spirits of his past he begins slowly to deal with them: his alcoholic mother, his absent father, his (almost) girlfriend Paula, his own fatal mistakes in Afghanistan... and of course, Mitch.

Review "A lovely book which deals with a challenging subject sympathetically ... buy it and enjoy." Army Rumour Service "It's a book with dark undercurrents, and storytelling that makes it fast and compelling." Annie Brown, Daily Record 'It's a beautiful, sad and urgent book about modern-day Britain, about what war does to people, about hope and hopelessness, about love and acceptance, and about learning to let go.' --Book Trust

This book is a powerful read.Sean, a veteran of the Afghan war, returns to his Scottish home, traumatized by what he experienced and lost. In the face of a world he now perceives to be tainted and warped, he struggles to bring forth the instinct for self preservation which would allow his healing to begin. We accompany him on this journey of alienation and on-again/off-again casual determination. He struggles daily with whether it is even worth it to hoist himself out of the painful murk in order to achieve what he believes can be, at most, a life that is tolerable. Slowly, ever so slowly, he creeps forward… Although this book is fiction, one has no doubt that the story has been repeatedly echoed in reality - name any war - any country. I can't help wondering whether the author also suffered from some sort of PTSD to so exquisitely be able to describe the day-to-day battle of trying to re-gain a somewhat balanced life perspective. This book is a rich read with a well-developed story. It not only ushers the reader through the twisted landscape of Sean's mind, but through a sliver of the beautiful Scottish countryside as well.

Following the main character's service as a marine, he struggles with with his return to society and finding reasons to live. The author has an excellent understanding of PTSD and the impact of war . Each supporting character is well drawn and establishes herself or himself in your mind. The story unfolds and invites the reader to become fully engaged in Sean's inner dialogue and the day to day challenges. There is a cinematic feel as the story unfolds the reader easily imagines the action. Of course her appreciation of Scotland's country side is wonderful.I am hoping there is a sequel!

The author is a friend, and I was terribly nervous that I would hear her voice the entire time while reading it. Instead, I heard the voice of Sean, the book's main character, and the distinct voices of all the other characters, woven together into a touching and colorful storyline portraying Sean's return from Afghanistan and his attempt to return to a "normal" life. While the story focuses on Sean's personal struggle with PTSD, that is only one aspect of the book, and of Sean. This book is also about family, love, recovery, and sense of self -- a fantastic debut novel.
