About the Author
Maceo Montoya is an assistant professor in the Department of Chicano Studies at the University of California, Davis, and an affiliated faculty member of Taller Arte del Nuevo Amenecer (TANA), a community-based art center in Woodland, California. He is also the author of The Scoundrel and the Optimist and The Deportation of Wopper Barraza: A Novel (UNM Press). His paintings, drawings, and prints have been widely exhibited and published.

A Powerful Read By Phillip Victor Montoya takes an unflinching look at the fine line between love and obsession, cowardice and valor, moral strength and moral weakness. These conflicts run parallel to the protagonist's ambivalence over his biracial identity and his efforts to resolve it. This in itself makes this nuanced story worth reading. However the story moves deeper into the largely biological realm of "fight/flight" as it impacts one's sense of purpose, mood, and emotional maturity. Unlike the Freudian castration anxiety which is ultimately based on guilt and identification with the aggressor, our protagonist's struggle to regain his lost "cajones" comes from a desire to conquer fear in its most primitive sense without appeasement or compromise. This is no easy task when facing one's fear means being true to a self that one has lost a sense of certainty of. Montoya has once again wrote a thoroughly original tale. A truly unique voice, he spares nothing in his willingness to face the truth head on.
